THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

FRANCE URGES TOUGHER PILOT CHECKS AFTER GERMANWINGS CRASH French investigators have recommended tougher medical checks for pilots after uncovering fresh evidence of unreported concerns over the mental state of a German pilot who crashed his jet into the Alps last year, killing all 150 people on board. France’s BEA air accident investigation agency said a doctor consulted by Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz had recommended two weeks before the disaster that he should be treated in a psychiatric hospital. The unidentified private physician was one of a number of doctors seen by the 27-year-old as he wrestled with symptoms of a “psychotic depressive episode” that started in December 2014 and may have lasted until the day of the crash, it said. At least 16 people including four Europeans were killed on Sunday when gunmen opened fire on beachgoers at a resort town in Ivory Coast, a officer from the national police said. “For the moment, we have a total of 12 dead, including four Europeans. ... We don’t know yet if there are others. We are doing clean-up operations right now,” the officer told security forces during a briefing attended by a Reuters reporter. REUTERS

SLED DOG KILLED IN SNOWMOBILE ‘ATTACKS’ AT ALASKA’S IDITAROD

3

Alaska State Troopers on Saturday arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with attacks on two musher teams taking part in the Iditarod dog sled race that killed at least one dog and injured three others. Two veteran mushers in Alaska’s Iditarod told race officials on Saturday that a person driving a snowmobile tried to drive the machine into their sled teams in apparent attacks. Alaska State Troopers said they arrested Arnold Demoski in connection with the incidents, which occurred about 12 miles from the Nulato checkpoint, about 582 miles into this year’s 975-mile course. A dog belonging to four-time champion Jeff King was killed when his team was hit from behind by a snowmobile, and two of his other dogs were injured, the Iditarod Trail Committee said in a statement on its website. BOLARIS’ WEATHER WATCH: NORTHEAST CAN EXPECT RAIN, WIND EARLY WEEK Wow, that was quite the summer tease by Mother Nature last week as temperatures passed spring levels and jumped right into summertime readings. Quite a few places hit 80 degrees in the MidAtlantic and right here in the Northeast, with the exception of all coastal sections as the big, bad chilly Atlantic kept the thermometer 20 to 25 degrees cooler there. Well, it’s Monday and it’s back to reality as chilly rains will continue to spread up and through the Northeast as readings remain mainly in the chilly 40s. A stiff easterly wind will turn umbrellas inside out and minor coastal flooding will take place from the Jersey shore to the Capes of New England. Things will turn around in a big way by Wednesday with a return to sunshine along with much milder temperatures. Spring arrives at 12:30 a.m. on March 20.

Bolaris’ Weather Watch

JOHN BOLARIS @weathersavior

Ah, not so fast. As you look at your phone and check your weather for the next 10 days you will see there is no mention of snow, and it could turn out to be correct, but it could also turn out to be in error. Most computerized digital weather data that is generated on your electronic device is just a pure regurgitation of exactly what the computer models are spewing out, but without any human interpretation. Now I do pride myself on long-range trends, and if you read my column last week, I expressed some concern starting around March 22, and that still holds true, but I’m moving up the date to March 20-21, just as spring arrives. Tendencies exist for

This week at a glance Cold rain arrives today. There could be a few ice pellets mixed in this morning, chilly 42 degrees. Tonight: Rain and fog. The low will be 38 degrees. Tuesday: You’ll still need the umbrella, as it’ll be damp and chilly 45 degrees.

a significant to major coastal storm to take shape somewhere along the Mid-Atlantic coast with the funneling of cold air aloft, that could get pulled down creating an environment cold enough for heavy, wet snow for parts of the Northeast. Odds would favor a cold rain for Philly, NYC and Boston, but it’s not out of the question for some mixing of snow or a changeover to snow along the I95 corridor.

Wednesday: Mr. Sunshine returns as temps hit 59 degrees. Thursday, St. Patrick’s Day: Most of the day should be dry, with the chance of a shower or two doing the Irish jig and a high of 56 degrees. Friday: A chance of showers with a high of 48 degrees.

Now with all this being said, it’s far from a certainty as “the possible event” is still about a week away. Looking at the major atmospheric signals that help in forecasting East Coast storms (arctic oscillation and North Atlantic oscillation) are hugely split, meaning a low confidence forecast at this time. However, it still needs to be watched, and whether this turns out to be fact or fiction, only time will tell.

South End fire kills a mother, injures two others The fire reportedly broke out early Saturday morning in a five-story apartment building on East Canton Street. MATT LEE @MetroBOS

matthew.lee@metro.us

A fire that tore through a South End apartment on Saturday killed a mother and injured her child and another victim. The fire broke out early Saturday morning in a five-story apartment building on East Canton Street, WHDH reported. The mother, identified by the Boston Herald as Veronica Boyd, was pronounced dead at the scene after a man and Boyd’s 6-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life threatening. Angelisa Andredes,

one of the residents of the building who escaped with her twin daughters told the Herald the unidentified man, who WHDH reported was Boyd’s husband, “was pacing back and forth, screaming, ‘My wife, my wife, my wife.’” “When he got the news, he told his daughter, ‘Mom’s not coming home,’ and they both cried,” said Andredes. Investigators estimated the blaze, the third fatal fire the city has seen this year, caused $100,000 worth of damage.

Boston’s metal fans of color unite in a new club Metalheads outnumbered by white peers seek strength in numbers. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

A new community for metalheads of color is sprouting in Boston. “No more being the odd one out or getting funny looks when you go to shows,â€? the Boston Heavy Metal POC group’s about page on Meetup. com reads. “We’ll all be in this together.â€? A metal fan for most of her adult life, 33-year-old Ebi Poweigha founded the club earlier this month. As of this writing, it has a dozen members. Her inspiration, she said, is that for too long nonwhite fans of the music genre — the base of supporters for which is overwhelmingly white and typically male — has been less welcoming for listeners who don’t quite fit the mold. For nearly two decades, Poweigha said, many in the metal community she loves have not known what to do with her, a black woman, at concerts. She’s often the only person of color in a packed venue, she said. “I still go to shows by myself and get stupid questions: ‘Are you sure you

want to be here? Do you know who’s playing?’â€? she recalled. “Sometimes people give you funny looks or shove you or stand too close to you because they don’t want you there. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s happened often enough where it doesn’t feel good.â€? Sensing she wasn’t alone, Poweigha launched the city’s first club for metal fans of color on March 1. Watertown’s Candice Crawford-Zakian, 38, was among those who signed up right away. Crawford-Zakian is a transplant from Washington, D.C., where she used to be frontwoman of a band called Red Pill Down. She recently joined Bos-

“I’ve been a fan of rock and metal for many years. I sang in bands for years. I’m usually the only black person, if not, one of a very few. Sometimes I’ve gotten looks like I don’t belong, which is frustrating. It’s music. It’s universal. Watertown’s Candice Crawford-Zakian

ton-based outfit Omnia. Metal, she said, can feel like a club. Long a refuge for people who can already feel like outcasts and devotees of a niche, aggressive sound, some in the metal scene make a habit out of deciding what’s authentically metal and what isn’t. That’s meant she’s been written off as an artist more times than she prob-

ably deserves, she said. “It’s one thing when a guy screams in a rock song, but it’s just weird when a woman screams. ‘What is she so angry about?’ There are all kinds of assumptions. Mix that with a scene where shows are often rough, full of people shoving, swinging limbs and jumping on top of one an-

other — in fact, that’s part of its allure — and a person who feels unwanted has lots of reasons to keep their guard up. “It can get a little hairy,â€? she said. “I would like to go with people and have strength and numbers.â€? Not everyone signed up for the same reasons. Manaj Srivastava, 31, who moved to Massachusetts from India in 2010, said he joined up just because he loves the music and wanted to meet likeminded friends. But several of the club’s earliest members told Metro they immediately understood the Meetup’s mission and saw

the need for it. It’s not a specifically Boston phenomenon, feeling left out of the subculture that orbits around metal music, said Canadian Brooklynite Laina Dawes. She literally wrote the book on the subject in 2013. She called it â€œWhat Are You Doing here?: A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal.â€? The book and her media appearances that followed it haven’t had as big an impact as she might have hoped, she said. There was the predictable pushback. “You get a demographic of metal fans who say, ‘If you don’t like it, leave,’â€? she said. “’If you don’t like this particular music scene, you people should be listening to hiphop. Go over there.’â€? Told about the new Boston meet-up and the early support it’s gotten, she cheered the idea, saying she’d never come across a group with a similar mission. “It should happen more often,â€? she said. Poweigha isn’t angry about how the scene has received her throughout her 15 years of fandom, isn’t trying to make a big statement and doesn’t want to spread a negative message about heavy metal, she said. But she started the group because she worried people of color don’t go to metal shows because they don’t realize how many people like them are out there. “Then hopefully it will get other metal fans to see that it’s not a strange thing,â€? she said. “We’re not anomalies.â€?

Guys, should we be worried about Kris Jenner? Singer-songwriter Pete Yorn is back with his sixth studio album.

But Pete Yorn can still get inside your head. CHRIS CAESAR @ChrisCaesar

letters@metro.us

It’s been six years since Pete Yorn released a solo record, and 10 years since the multi-instrumentalist decided to forgo a studio band and handle the heavy-lifting himself. While Yorn’s tackled other projects in between, he tells us he felt called back to explore the methods that informed his earlier albums. His sixth full-length album, “Arranging Time,” comes out March 11 from Capitol. Yorn, who kicks off the U.S. leg of his tour in New York on March 15, chats with us about his new album, looking backward and staying present. What inspired you to hop back into the recording studio? I just had some music in me that needed to get out, you know? At the end of the day, that’s what I do. I was involved in music during that period, like with my other band, The Olms, and I was definitely exploring stuff, but at some point I just felt like I wanted to make a solo record and play mostly by myself. It’s just a natural cycle that kind of comes around. I hadn’t done it in a few records and it just felt like, yeah, I kinda want to do this again. You released the first album’s first single “Summer Was a Day” back in November, and on Facebook you wrote that working with [producer] R. Walt Vincent again was like “creating fresh new material that felt like a furthering of a conversation we had started back in 2001.” I know a lot of your music deals with personal growth and change; this album

JIM WRIGHT

in particular is about time changing quickly. What kind of conversation were you having when you made your first record, and how is that conversation different 15 years later? I was like 25 when I made the first record, and I had my experiences up to that point as a person. I haven’t changed so much what I think I am writing about, I think tons of people write about love, loss, regret, anxiety, guilt, desire, and all that s—t goes into my songs. And I’m always kind of examining that as a human being: examining it in myself, people around me, popular culture, movies anything I see. Now I’m able to approach songwriting and that process with new eyes. I do want to be clear: going back to work with Walt Vincent and all that — I know a lot of my fans know him from “Musicforthemorningafter” — but I wasn’t trying to make a record like that. Really, the reason is that I wanted to play with myself, bouncing around in the studio, and Walt is a great partner for that. There are other producers on the record as well, but I just kind of picked fun partners I worked with before who would be fun to do that style of recording with. It’s about the approach, not the sound. How much spontaneity is involved in the studio when you’re recording like this? That’s what it’s all about. Every song is different, but typically I’ll only have about 80 percent of the song written [when I record], because I know there will be some weird stuff that happens in the studio you can’t account for and that will take you somewhere you didn’t even expect — I would hate to close myself off to the magic that hap-

If you go March 20 at 7 p.m. Royale 279 Tremont St. 617-338-7699 Royaleboston.com

pens. So yeah, we set up a situation in all of these studios: there’s a guitar station, there’s a keyboard station, there’s drum station and a drum machine station. And I just go around and can follow along where the song takes me. You’ve said that the title of the album is “a reminder to be present” and that the album itself is a contemplation on the past and “how much of it is a blur.” What made you want to explore those themes in this album? It’s where I approach every day from. I’m approaching my life that way, my interactions with people that way, and therefore, when I go in the studio I need to approach it that way as well. For me, when I think about the characters in each song, some are dealing with feelings of longing for the past, there are some who are focused on the future and others sitting Zenlike in the middle, taking it all in. I think I always try to think about all those perspectives when I write. It’s just kind of what I’m into, I guess. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be something like a psychologist. Why is that? I’m into the mind, and perceptions, and the ways people perceive each other and perceive moments, and how people arrange their time — how much of their day is just spent trying to get into the next moment?

Is your workplace gender biased? Do unconscious preferences sway employers more than we think? A new book suggests the answer is yes. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa

alizah.salario@metro.us

From the rĂŠsumĂŠs that get noticed to the way workplaces are designed, gender bias plays out in far more subtle — and unconscious — ways than we might think, argues Harvard University behavioral economist Iris Bohnet in her book, “What Works: Gender Equality by Design.â€? We spoke with Bohnet about why we’re all prone to bias, and how companies can level the field. This is 2016. Many companies have long used diversity training to help achieve equality, so why are our workplaces still so biased? A very important insight is that we, or our minds, tend to put people into categories. That’s just how our minds work. When we see a male kindergarten teacher, for example, or a female engineer, we don’t naturally associate those jobs with men or women. How does unconscious bias aect who gets hired? RĂŠsumĂŠs are fraught with bias because they trigger some things we might not be aware of. Sadly enough, research can

show that depending on whether the name is male or female, and what racial background the name signals, the likelihood that the person gets a call is significantly affected. In a name, there’s very often a lot of stereotyping going on, and it’s often unconscious. What other ways do we see bias play out before a person even gets the job? Interviews are actually the place we’re most concerned about because employers tend to think they have good intuition, but that’s where bias kicks in. Even when you ask interviewers what they look for, the answers that they give are actually quite scary. Like, “I just learned that he likes the same football team as I do, he must be a great production editor. Clearly, things that have nothing to do

with each other. How can companies use design features to eliminate bias? In the ’70s, major orchestras in the U.S. introduced curtains and had their musicians audition behind a screen. The likelihood that women would make the next rounds increased by 50 percentage points. The curtains played a very important role in introducing female musicians in to orchestras. This is a design intervention. How can organizations de-bias the workplace? There’s a lot of research suggesting that role models still matter. Our organizations really have to think about what they have on the walls, and whether it’s representative of our employees, or our future employees.

NCAA bracket breakdown: Parity makes field wide open Here’s a quick, first look at the four regions of this year’s NCAA Tournament field.

The No. 1’s Here is a look at the teams deemed as the top in all of college basketball as the tournament begins:

EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

The time has come to pick your losers, watch a bevy of improbable upsets and lose interest in the second weekend after your bracket falls apart. The 2016 bracket is treacherous and filled with land mines, with parity across the map meaning that almost anything can happen. Are the No. 1’s the favorites, or will a mid-seed catch fire and make an incredible run at a title? Here is a brief, firstglace breakdown of this year’s four regions:

South Region The South is headlined by No. 1 overall seed Kansas, which faces Austin Peay. But an intriguing matchup will be the No. 8-9 match between Colorado and UConn. These teams have the firepower to pull an upset over the

Jayhawks. Some other talented clubs with Final 4 talent are in the South, with Maryland slated to face South Dakota state as a five-seed and Cal, a fourseed facing Hawaii. Villanova is the No. 2 seed on the south, a surprising move that will force the Wildcats to chase their postseason hopes away from Philadelphia. Temple, which survived the bubble, has a

tough 10-7 battle against Iowa in the South too. Also keep an eye out for a great play-in match up between Vanderbilt and Wichita State.

Duke Blue Devils earned a No. 4 seed and will face another North Carolina team in No. 13-ranked UNC Wilmington and could be bounced by Baylor in Round 2. A bit further down the bracket Oklahoma, a squad that had a legitimate chance at a 1-seed will play in Oklahoma city against Cal St. Bakersfield. The last team in the top four is Texas A&M. On upset alert is

West Region The Oregon Ducks will have a few challenges in their bracket as well, first and foremost the Baylor Bears (who face Yale) in an intriguing 5-vs-12 matchup. Grayson Allen and the

• East Region — North Carolina The 28-6 Tar Heels were dominant down the stretch, winning their rubber match against Duke and triumphing as both the ACC regular season champs and in the conference tournament. • South Region — Kansas The Jayhawks, at 30-4, were the best team in one of the best conferences in the country in the Big 12. • Midwest Region — Virginia A second No. 1 seed from the ACC, the Cavaliers finished the year at 26-7 and will boast the top billing for the first time in decades. • West Region — Oregon: The first ever No. 1 seed for Oregon, they won the Pac-12 and went 28-6. Texas, which faces always tournament-tough Iowa State.

East Region All eyes will be on UNC in the East regional, but tough No. 4 and No. 5 seeds will be eyeing the Tar Heels, winners of the ACC regular season and tournament, as the region marches toward Philadelphia.

No. 5 Indiana, if they thwart Chattanooga, will face Kentucky, the No. 4 seed (if they take care of Stony Brook). Both of these powerhouses could create very interesting matchups against North Carolina. On the bottom of the Eastern bracket is Xavier, the region’s No. 2 and No. 3 West Virginia, both looking to be snipers against the highly-touted Heels. Michigan and Tulsa will play in a playin fight for No. 11.

Midwest Region Virginia is the top dog in the final region and will have to watch out for Purdue, the No. 5 seed (which faces Little Rock), and No. 4 Iowa State (facing Iona). Michigan State learned it’s fate late in Sunday’s selection show, and will star as the No. 2 seed (and will face Middle Tennessee). If they advance, they’ll put their Big 10 title to the test against the winner of the 10-7 match between Dayton and Syracuse. Rounding out the bracket are No. 3 seed Utah (facing Fresno State) and No. 6 Seton Hall (facing No. 11 Gonzaga).
