FRANCE URGES TOUGHER PILOT CHECKS AFTER GERMANWINGS CRASH French investigators have recommended tougher medical checks for pilots after uncovering fresh evidence of unreported concerns over the mental state of a German pilot who crashed his jet into the Alps last year, killing all 150 people on board. France’s BEA air accident investigation agency said a doctor consulted by Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz had recommended two weeks before the disaster that he should be treated in a psychiatric hospital. The unidentified private physician was one of a number of doctors seen by the 27-year-old as he wrestled with symptoms of a “psychotic depressive episode” that started in December 2014 and may have lasted until the day of the crash, it said. At least 16 people including four Europeans were killed on Sunday when gunmen opened fire on beachgoers at a resort town in Ivory Coast, a officer from the national police said. “For the moment, we have a total of 12 dead, including four Europeans. ... We don’t know yet if there are others. We are doing clean-up operations right now,” the officer told security forces during a briefing attended by a Reuters reporter. REUTERS
SLED DOG KILLED IN SNOWMOBILE ‘ATTACKS’ AT ALASKA’S IDITAROD

Alaska State Troopers on Saturday arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with attacks on two musher teams taking part in the Iditarod dog sled race that killed at least one dog and injured three others. Two veteran mushers in Alaska’s Iditarod told race officials on Saturday that a person driving a snowmobile tried to drive the machine into their sled teams in apparent attacks. Alaska State Troopers said they arrested Arnold Demoski in connection with the incidents, which occurred about 12 miles from the Nulato checkpoint, about 582 miles into this year’s 975-mile course. A dog belonging to four-time champion Jeff King was killed when his team was hit from behind by a snowmobile, and two of his other dogs were injured, the Iditarod Trail Committee said in a statement on its website. BOLARIS’ WEATHER WATCH: NORTHEAST CAN EXPECT RAIN, WIND EARLY WEEK Wow, that was quite the summer tease by Mother Nature last week as temperatures passed spring levels and jumped right into summertime readings. Quite a few places hit 80 degrees in the MidAtlantic and right here in the Northeast, with the exception of all coastal sections as the big, bad chilly Atlantic kept the thermometer 20 to 25 degrees cooler there. Well, it’s Monday and it’s back to reality as chilly rains will continue to spread up and through the Northeast as readings remain mainly in the chilly 40s. A stiff easterly wind will turn umbrellas inside out and minor coastal flooding will take place from the Jersey shore to the Capes of New England. Things will turn around in a big way by Wednesday with a return to sunshine along with much milder temperatures. Spring arrives at 12:30 a.m. on March 20. Ah, not so fast. As you look at your phone and

check your weather for the next 10 days you will see there is no mention of snow, and it could turn out to be correct, but it could also turn out to be in error. Most computerized digital weather data that is generated on your electronic device is just a pure regurgitation of exactly what the computer models are spewing out, but without any human interpretation. Now I do pride myself on long-range trends, and if you read my column last week, I expressed some concern starting around March 22, and that still holds true, but I’m moving up the date to March 20-21, just as spring arrives. Tendencies exist for a significant to major coastal storm to take shape somewhere along the Mid-Atlantic coast
This week at a glance If you’re reading this in transit, hopefully you already grabbed your umbrella, as a cold rain is moving in and will be with us right through tonight. Temperatures will actually drop back into the upper 30s, and the wind will turn your umbrella inside out. Good luck grabbing a cab. with the funneling of cold air aloft, that could get pulled down creating an environment cold enough for heavy, wet snow for parts of the Northeast. Odds would favor a cold rain for Philly, NYC and Boston, but it’s not out of the question for some mixing of snow or a changeover to snow along the I95 corridor. Now with all this being said, it’s far from a

certainty as “the possible event” is still about a week away. Looking at the major atmospheric signals that help in forecasting East Coast storms (arctic oscillation and North Atlantic oscillation) are hugely split, meaning a low confidence forecast at this time. However, it still needs to be watched, and whether this turns out to be fact or fiction, only time will tell.

NYC art students reconstruct faces using skulls from real cold cases First-year student Allison Hill-Edgar recreated the face of a member of the first AfricanAmerican Civil War regiment. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
A group of New York City students have used the power of art to help finally give a face to some unknown homicide victims — and opened the door to one day finding out their stories. Starting this month, the New York Academy of Art, located at 111 Franklin St., is hosting an exhibition of clay models, in which students from the school’s Forensic Sculpture Workshop recreated the faces of victims from real cold cases who have gone unidentified. Through the workshop — which is a partnership between the graduate school and the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner — 15 students were each given a replica of a skull of an unknown individual and asked to recreate the face of the victim. This is the second year the graduate school has partnered with the medical examiner. Students first reconstructed faces in January 2015 for 11 victims — of which one case has actually had a positive identification and another is currently in the process of being identified. “This is very exciting because it is very fun to do for the students, but you recognize that you are doing a service for someone and there is the possibility that you can help someone,” said John Volk, director of the school’s Continuing Studies Program. Through the direction of Joe Mullins — who teaches the workshop — the students were asked to select a skull and were then given details on each victim. Some of the details in-

“When you walk in and you’ve come from 15 people to now there is 30 people in the room at the same time it’s a very strange and eerie kind of feeling. And now [the skulls] are no longer an abstract idea, this is somebody.” John Volk, New York Academy of Art
cluded age range, where the body was found, anything that was left with the body, a guess on gender and more. Then through five days in mid January, the students began to form the faces; using the knowledge they already gained through classes at the school such as anatomical drawing and écorché — where students sculpt a body from bone to muscles. “When you walk in and you’ve come from 15 people to now there is 30 people in the room at the same time, it’s a very strange and eerie kind of feeling,” Volk said. “And now [the skulls] are no longer an abstract idea, this is somebody.”
This year, the replica of the skulls — which were created through a 3-D printer — came from cold cases all over the country from Delaware to California, including six cases from the New York Metro area. For first-year student Allison Hill-Edgar, the idea of building faces out of just a skull seemed impossible. However as each day went by, the impossible slowly transformed into an amazing possibility. “When we got to the end of the class and everyone had these vastly different people staring back at them, I was completely amazed. I was blown away,” Hill-Edgar said. The painting major,
who never dabbled in sculpting before, added that she waited until the rest of her classmates selected a skull and took the last one on the table. To her surprise, the skull she picked came with a unique history. The skull belonged to a member of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the first all-African-American Civil War regiment. And although she said she initially wanted to recreate the face of a cold case victim, she was always fascinated about the story of the regiment and this felt like helping form a part of history. “To be able to put a face for someone that was unidentified, that was so cool,” she said.
Hill-Edgar, who used to be a doctor, said she utilized her medical background in understanding the anatomy behind the reconstruction and said she helped her classmates when questions came up. She added that during the last day, many of the students took the time to make sure details seemed correct to the information they were given, because unlike other art projects — where they are given the freedom to express themselves creatively — this assignment had more meaning to each piece. “Each day there was a step that we added, so it was wild to watch them come alive,” HillEdgar said. “Doing it
right was very important. I think we all felt a certain amount of responsibility.” The face models will be on view in the windows of the school facing Franklin Street until March 23. Once the exhibition is over, the models will be photographed and uploaded to Name Us, a website which is maintained by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Through here, hopes are that someone will recognize a face and possibly give an identity to a victim. “It was just really rewarding to be a part of the art world being able to help people,” Volk said. “It’s like instant gratification.”

NYC to study effects of outdoor lighting on crime reduction The results of the study will be used to determine future investments in permanent lighting. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
A new study is looking to see how much a little light can keep a neighborhood secure — and help residents feel safer. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday the launch of a new study that will be the first in the country to thoroughly examine the effects different lighting installation strategies have on reducing crime. Through the study, the city will partner with residents from 40 public housing developments over the next six months and provide 400 units of additional temporary lighting. After the analysis is complete, the results will be used to determine future investments in permanent lighting throughout New York City. “We need to use every tool at our disposal to ensure that every New Yorker is safe,” de Blasio said. “By partnering with residents from these 40 developments on this rigorously evaluated study, the city will be able to understand

precisely how different lighting strategies can reduce crime and create safer public spaces.” City officials worked with residents to identify certain locations within their developments they felt were in the most need of lighting at night. The study will determine the effects of lighting on outdoor criminal activity, and evaluate the impact of different amounts of additional lighting. Residents will also be surveyed to see how lighting changes fears of crime or victim-

ization, and how it affects neighborhood unity among residents. “When we think about deterring crime, we need to pursue a broad range of strategies beyond traditional law enforcement,” said
Elizabeth Glazer, director of the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. “A welllit street deters crime better than a dark alley, just as opportunities for work and play promote safety better than disadvantage and disconnection.”
The study and temporary lighting towers — which are funded with $5.56 million in city asset forfeiture money — is part of the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP). Through MAP, city
officials and police have been working with residents from 15 highcrime public housing developments since July 2014 to address certain conditions that encourage crime. Since fiscal years 2014 and 2015, violent crime in the 15 developments have gone down 11.2 percent, according to the mayor’s office. As part of MAP, NYCHA is installing new and improved permanent lighting, as well as CCTV cameras and layered-access controls, at all the 15 developments. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. The temporary lighting that will be provided by the study announced on Friday will go beyond the 15 developments and will allow the city to understand how to “best scale up lighting projects,” officials said. “Addressing crime in public housing requires a multitiered approach,” said Shola Olatoye, NYCHA chair and CEO. “As NYCHA moves to increase security cameras, install layered-access doors and permanent light towers, and reimagine our resident security procedures, we must also examine how such measures influence the communal perception of safety.”
Two Brooklyn men arrested in $10M illegal marijuana operation One large drug bust led authorities to an even bigger one earlier this week in connection to an illegal marijuana operation in Brooklyn that was netting $10 million per year. On Wednesday, investigators saw two men picking up a container from ABF Freight, located at 414 Maspeth Avenue, according to authorities. The duo then
loaded the container into a truck and drove it to 234 Java Street. Upon further investigation, police found that the vehicle contained about 300 pounds of marijuana, cops said. A search warrant was obtained for 234 Java Street on Thursday, where police found about 100 pounds of marijuana, 1,100 packed
containers of retail-ready marijuana, mushrooms, liquid THC, liquid PCP and liquid HGH — all totaling a street value of about $2.5 million, according to police. Authorities said they also found about $100,000 in cash and a .22-caliber North American Arms revolver. Members of the NYPD’s Criminal Enterprise Investiga-
tions Unit and Homeland Security arrested 36-year-old Philip Feng and 35-year-old Victor Bae and charged each of them with criminal sale of marijuana, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia. Second body pulled from Hudson River after deadly tugboat crash The Coast Guard suspended the active search after 12 hours. FLICKR, DOUG KERR, CREATIVE COMMONS
The Coast Guard on Saturday night said that after 12 hours of looking, they had suspended the active search for the two missing crew members. A second body was pulled from the Hudson River this morning after a deadly tugboat crash on Saturday, according to ABC 7 News. A tugboat crew member died and two were missing on Saturday after the vessel collided with a barge and sank in the Hudson River under the Tappan Zee Bridge north of New York City, authorities said. Paul Amon, 62, of Bayville, New Jersey, was one of the people killed in the accident. The pre-dawn accident involved a 90-foot tug with three people on board that struck a construction barge moored under the bridge, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. He said one crew member died in the incident. The Coast Guard on Saturday night said that after 12 hours of looking, they had suspended the active search for the two missing crew members. Cuomo said the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation
and a private contractor would work to contain as much as 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaking from the sunken tug. The fuel leak created a slick some 300 feet wide and 5 miles long, he said. Barges are moored near the bridge as part of the construction of a new span connecting New York’s Rockland and Westchester counties. Cuomo said there were 21 workers on the construction barge at the time of the collision, but none were injured. The tugboat, named Specialist, was one in a party of three tugs transporting a barge with construction equipment down the Hudson River when it veered from the designated channel and crashed into the stationed construction barge. The other two boats were not involved in the crash. It was not the first fatal accident since the massive bridge project began. In July 2013, a speedboat carrying six members of a wedding party smashed into a barge anchored below the span, a major transportation link in the city’s northern suburbs. Two people were killed, including the brideto-be and the best man. REUTERS
BRIEFS NJ Transit, unions reach tentative deal to avert strike A coalition of rail unions reached a contract deal with NJ Transit on Friday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said, averting a possible strike that would have created a travel nightmare for tens of thousands of commuters into New York City. Christie declined to reveal the total cost or specific terms of the tentative agreement, which averted what would have been the first strike at the New Jersey rail system since 1983. “I never felt we were in danger of a strike or a lockout,” Christie told a news conference. “Neither side was spoiling for a fight.” He said the proposed contract would require no immediate fare hike for the 100,000 commuters who use the system daily, and no service
cuts were envisioned. REUTERS Dead newborn found on Staten Island, mother arrested A woman has been arrested after the body of a newborn was found in a garbage bag on Staten Island, New York 1 reported. NYPD officers made the grisly discovery Saturday morning around 11:30 a.m. on Richmond Hill Road in the New Springville neighborhood of the borough. Multiple news outlets, including NBC, reported that officers found the baby “unconscious” and that the cause of death is undetermined. The mother, identified as Nausheen Rahman, 28, was arrested at Staten Island University Hospital North and charged with concealment of a corpse. MATT LEE

Obama tells Cuban dissidents he will discuss rights with Castro President Barack Obama promised one of Cuba’s most prominent dissident groups he would raise the issues of freedom of speech and assembly with Cuban President Raul Castro during his March 20-22 visit to the Caribbean island. In a letter dated March 10, Obama praised the work of the Ladies in White, which marches weekly to protest Cuba’s Communist government, and defended his policy of seeking to normalize relations with Cuba as good for its people. U.S. support for the dissidents is a source of tension ahead of Obama’s visit, the first by a U.S. president since Fidel Castro’s rebels overthrew a pro-American government in 1959. After more than half a century of Cold Warinspired animosity, the two sides promised 15 months ago to normalize relations. The Ladies in White criticized Obama’s policy change, saying the Cuban government continues to suppress dissent by breaking up anti-government demonstrations while maintaining a monopoly on the media. They say Cuba has cracked down more ferociously since rapprochement. “We take seriously
the concerns you have raised,” said Obama’s letter, which group leader Berta Soler read to about two dozen Ladies in White and other supporters gathered in a Havana park. “I will raise these issues directly with President Castro,” said Obama, who called the Ladies “an inspiration to human rights movements around the world.” A senior U.S. official in Washington confirmed that an Obama aide delivered the letter to the Ladies in White in Miami. As in marches for the most of the last year, a demonstration on Sunday ended with police detaining the protesters after they were met by a larger group of pro-government counterdemonstrators. Police detained about two dozen people, at which point the streets filled with conga dancers and drummers who led hundreds of government supporters in their own rally. The weekly demonstrations and detentions are normal, but the conga line was an additional flourish a week before Obama’s visit. Soler welcomed Obama’s letter but still disagreed with him for enacting unilateral changes without any reciprocal moves by Cuba. REUTERS

Trump digs in after weekend violence Trump used a round of television appearances to beat back furious criticism that he was encouraging discord with divisive language disparaging Muslims and immigrants.
Donald Trump GETTY IMAGES
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump refused to take responsibility on Sunday for clashes that have erupted at his campaign events, saying he was not inciting violence but giving voice to the anger of his supporters. “I don’t accept responsibility. I do not condone violence in any shape, Trump said on NBC’s
“Meet the Press. The tension at his rallies, Trump said, came from people being “sick and tired of American leadership that has cost them jobs through international trade deals, failed to defeat Islamic State terrorism and treats military veterans poorly. “The people are angry at that — they’re not angry about something I’m
saying. I’m just the messenger, Trump said. Trump, front-runner for the Republican nomination, appeared unchastened after simmering tensions between his supporters and protesters angry over his positions on immigration and Muslims erupted Friday night, forcing him to cancel a Chicago rally and casting a shadow over his campaign appearances on Saturday. The scenes in Chicago followed several weeks of violence at Trump rallies, in which protesters and journalists have been punched, tackled and hustled out of venues, raising concerns about security heading into the Nov. 8 presidential election to replace Democratic President Barack Obama. BEAR WARNING! You know those movies where the frightened campers realize far too late they must work together to escape the grizzly? Yea, that’s pretty much the Republicans right now, and this week the biggest bruin, Donald Trump, could eectively polish o the last of them — which leads my three things to watch in politics. 1. LAIR OF THE SWAMP BEAR: Tuesday is last-stand time for Marco Rubio in Florida — heck, maybe for the Republican Party as we know it. Just a few months ago, Rubio thought his home state primary might clinch the nomination for him. Instead he is desperately trying to avoid a mauling by Trump on his own patio. At stake: 99 winnertake-all delegates. If Rubio snags them, he’ll still be in a distant third place, but at least he’d have done his part to repel Trump’s charge. On the other hand, if Rubio loses on his own turf, the screams for him to drop out will be enough to make a politico’s blood run cold. 2. BUCKEYE BEAR: If Florida can’t
TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the new book “My Year of Running Dangerously.
do the job, maybe Ohio can. Gov. John Kasich represents the second hope on Tuesday for the Republican establishment to stop Trump. Kasich is far down in the delegate count, but if he can collect Ohio’s 66 winner-take-all delegates, that too
could slow Trump’s rush to secure the nomination. Ted Cruz, by the way, already burned his powder in his home state of Texas. He may be able to rack up more delegates, but if Trump takes a big enough bite on Tuesday, the math says the man from New York may be unstoppable. 3. BEARING UP: And what about the Democrats? Like one of those apocryphal stories Scout masters tell Webelos, Hillary Clinton has taken a pickaxe handle to Bernie Sanders over and over and he just keeps coming. Sanders’ Michigan surprise left Camp Clinton reeling, and all that talk of inevitability is gone — especially if you look at just the pledged delegates. It doesn’t help that she is still wrestling with email issues, and the Dem base is jittery about her strength. She will keep trying to turn the attention toward her potential Republican opponent this week, but Sanders is showing sharper claws every day and she dare not turn her back on him, or he may shred her tent and make o with her cooler.

SXSW apologizes after Muslim Olympian told to remove hijab

Uterine fibroids (Myoma or Leiomyoma) are very common and treatable. 1 in 5 women experience fibroids during their child bearing years, and about 80% will have fibroids before the age of 50.
Do you have any of these symptoms? Bleeding between periods Heavy bleeding during periods Abnormally long periods Frequent urination
Pelvic pain and pressure Pressure in your lower abdomen Pain during intercourse
Organizers of the South by Southwest (SXSW) arts festival said on Sunday they apologized to U.S. Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad after a volunteer said she must remove her Muslim head covering to receive credentials to the event in Austin, Texas. The Olympic fencer was picking up an identification badge at the interactive, film and music event on Saturday when a volunteer told her she must take off her hijab before her photograph could be taken. “Even after I explained it was for religious reasons, he insisted I had to remove
my hijab,” she said on Twitter. SXSW organizers said on Sunday in an email to Reuters that they have since removed the volunteer for the duration of the event. “We are embarrassed by this and have apologized to Ibtihaj in person, and sincerely regret this incident,” SXSW said in the statement. Muhammad, 30, will make history in Rio de Janeiro as the first Olympian to represent the United States wearing a hijab. Muhammad has become an outspoken critic of presidential candidate Donald Trump, who called for
a ban on Muslims from entering the United States. “I feel like I owe it to people who look like me to speak out,” Muhammad told reporters on Wednesday. “When I hear someone say something like, ‘We’re going to send Muslims back to their countries,’ I say, ‘Well, I’m American. Where am I going to go?” After the incident was resolved at the event, Muhammad said that she was issued the wrong identification. “I was given the wrong ID! From now on my name is Tamir & I work for Time Warner Inc” she tweeted. REUTERS

Car bomb in Turkish capital Ankara, 32 killed, 75 injured A car bomb killed 27 people in the heart of the Turkish capital Ankara on Sunday and wounded 75 more, the governor’s office said, less than a month after a similar attack killed 32 people just blocks away. Video footage showed burning debris showering down on what appeared to be the entrance to an underpass. The blast could be heard 1.5 miles away and a large cloud of smoke could be seen rising over the city centre, a Reuters witness said. A senior security official told Reuters that the blast appeared to have been caused by a suicide car bomb. A second security official said gunfire was heard after the blast. Initial findings suggest the attack was carried out by Kurdish militant PKK or affiliated group, accord-

a bus carrying some 20 people near the central Guven Park and Kizilay Square. The government has said the previous car bombing in Ankara on Feb. 17 was carried out by Kurdish militants. That attack struck near Turkey’s military headquarters, parliament
and other key government institutions. Islamic State militants have meanwhile carried out at least four bomb attacks on Turkey since June 2015. Local jihadist groups and leftist radicals have also staged attacks in the NATO member country in the past. REUTERS

US police escape federal charges in 96 percent of rights cases: newspaper Federal prosecutors declined to bring charges against law enforcement officers in the United States facing allegations of civil rights violations in 96 percent of such cases between 1995 and 2015, according to an investigation by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The newspaper examined nearly 3 million Justice Department records related to how the department’s 94 U.S. attorney’s offices across the country, and in U.S. territories including Puerto Rico, handled civil rights cases against officers. The data included cases referred to the Justice Department by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies, as well as investigations that prosecutors opened on their own.
A demonstrator GETTY IMAGES
Overall, prosecutors turned down 12,703 potential civil rights violations out of 13,233 total complaints. By contrast, prosecutors rejected only about 23 percent of referrals in all other types of criminal cases, the newspaper said. The report comes just days after the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Preet Bharara, announced he would not press charges against a white officer who killed an unarmed black teenager inside his own apartment in 2012. The most common reasons that prosecutors cited for declining to
bring civil rights cases against officers were weak or insufficient evidence, lack of criminal intent and orders from the Justice Department, according to the Tribune-Review. The standard for bringing a federal civil rights case is much more stringent than that of a typical police misconduct case brought at the state level. Federal prosecutors must prove that an officer acted “willfully” in depriving someone of his or her rights, rather than simply negligently or recklessly. A Justice Department spokeswoman, Dena Iverson, told the TribuneReview that the agency takes “any allegation of law enforcement misconduct seriously and will review those allegations when they are brought to our attention.” REUTERS

By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment of cancer,” noted the clinic director at the OsteoRelief Institute in New York City. “The same holds true for treating knee arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at OsteoRelief Institute because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis - the better the results. The key to avoiding knee replacement surgery is doing the correct treatments as soon as possible.” What is the “correct treatment?” “That depends,” said the director. “There is no one answer when it comes to medical conditions and knee arthritis is no different. That’s why, if you have knee pain, you should have it evaluated by a doctor who deals with and treats knee pain every day,” added the director. For many knee arthritis pain sufferers the right treatments is viscosupplementation. In this treatment, a preparation of Hyaluronic acid (such as Hyalgan) is injected directly into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a natural lubricant and shock absorber of your joints and is found to be decreased in arthritis sufferers. This is similar to running your car low or without oil. Obviously, the sooner you put oil back in the car - the less damage will be done. That’s why some doctors feel early viscosupplementation gets the best results and is so important for avoiding surgery.
the artist simulated drawings above, picture #1 is a normal, pain-free knee. There is no arthritis and the knee can move and bend freely without pain.
Everyone Wants Proof: In
Successful Treatment - Hyalgan (blue) being precisely injected directly into the knee joint using laser guided hologic imaging. Advanced imaging allows treatments to be as precise as possible. Hyalgan can lubricate the joint and decrease pain.
(and Hyalgan) misses the joint space. Research shows this occurs up to 30% of the time without the use of laser guided hologic imaging to guide the injection. This is why Hyalgan may not have worked for you.
Failed Treatment - the injection
requiring months of rehabilitation. Some doctors think modern treatments done early enough can keep baby boomers from going under the knife.
Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery
Pain - the red is a knee joint with painful osteo-arthritis. Arthritis causes the joint space to decrease, grinding, stiffness, decreased motion, bone spurs, swelling and a lot of pain.
The director, believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space. That’s why the doctors at OsteoRelief Institute use advanced imaging technology called a “C-Arm.” A C-Arm allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the injection go where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing injections without digital imaging can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. If you had viscosupplementation treatments without advanced imagining and did not get good results - this may be why. “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The keys are to not wait, get a good evaluation from an expert and make sure advanced digital imaging (C-Arm) is used to make sure you have the best chance for success.”
Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery
Can Baby Boomers Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments?
Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other injections like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. We use special and very advanced advanced low dose video flouroscopy imaging called “Hologic Digital Imaging” so we can see right into the joint. This allows us to put the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without flouroscopy miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” said the director of Arthritis Treatment at Osteorelief Institute. OsteoRelief Institute is a state of the art medical facility offering only the best technology. “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. I can’t tell you how many patients have cancelled their total knee replacement surgeries.” added the director.
can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.
If you answered yes to any of these questions give OsteoRelief Institute a call and schedule your no obligation knee pain screening 800-227-KNEE (5633).
Do you have pain and osteoarthritis (arthritis) of the knee? Have you tried other treatments such as NSAIDS and other anti-inflamatory medications without success? Have you already tried viscosupplementation (HyaIgan, Suparz, Synvisc) without satisfactory results?

C-arm allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so treatments are precise and the Hyalgan actually goes where it is supposed to. Studies show that injections done without digital imaging can miss the joint up to 30% of the time. This is one reason Hyalgan or other Viscosupplementation may not have worked for you. OsteoRelief Institute uses this C-arm for every Hyalgan treatment.

And here’s something really important How To Get I - Viscosupplementation treatments are covered If you have knee pain, the director would Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? like to invite you for a no obligation screening by most insurance and medicare. To schedule No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and to see if you are a candidate for Hyalgan your no obligation screening or if you have any questions call 800-227-KNEE (5633). other supplements are much different. You treatments.
Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. When it is injected directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.
If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds of knee pain sufferers have flocked to OsteoRelief Institute New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - even-though it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story. Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricating fluid (synovial fluid) in your knee joint dries up. This means instead of gliding smoothly your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.
Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them

So how are Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux adjusting to married life a year in? Not so well, if In Touch is to be believed. Apparently the pair are “living separate lives” and have put their adoption plans on hold. “Justin’s apathetic when it comes to marriage,” a

Jen’s starting to realize that, too.” According to the source, Aniston and Theroux “remain at complete odds over everything, from how much time they spend together to where they should live. She loves L.A., he’ll take Manhattan.” And that’s not all: “She and Justin were halfway through the process of adopting twins — a boy and a girl — and were hoping to bring the kids home in the next couple of months, but their plans came to a halt when they started

Guys, should we be worried about Kris Jenner? Because apparently she’s not feeling too great about life and stuff, and it’s because nobody likes her no matter how much money she spends trying to make people like her. Or at least that’s the spin I’m getting on it from Radar Online. “She’s been a train wreck waiting to happen for months, pushing herself to the limit while overindulging on her vices the whole time,” a source warns. “Kris is her own worst enemy, she’s constantly on this
quest to push herself to the next level and make more money while controlling everyone around her. Plus, it burns her so badly that she can’t buy popularity, however hard she tries.” The last straw? Apparently she got booed off the stage at a concert — which can’t be good for anyone’s ego — an incident that has Jenner “now constantly crying that ‘everybody hates me,’” the source says. “Everyone fears it will prove the catalyst for a full-blown meltdown.” Should be good for ratings, though, right?
Ben Affleck’s mom not feeling Jennifer Garner’s interview Jennifer Garner got herself on the cover of Vanity Fair, opening up about her split from Ben Affleck, how she’s coping and what she thinks of his tacky back tattoo. And Affleck’s mom, Christine Anne Boldt, isn’t happy about what her exdaughter-in-law has been saying. “Chrissie’s really devastated by this and worries that Jen’s getting caught up in the fame game again and going for headlines by throwing Ben under the bus,” a source says, according to Star magazine. Boldt is apparently peeved because the interview comes on
the heels of “Jen making a promise to both of them that she’d protect Ben’s image no matter what,” the source adds. “Yet here she is talking about the nanny affair and how she tried to make it work.”

Meet Dan Trachtenberg of ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ A young filmmaker suddenly wound up helming one of the year’s biggest (but smallest) films. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Dan Trachtenberg owes “Whiplash” a big thanks. He got the gig directing “10 Cloverfield Lane” — the semi-sequel to 2008’s J.J. Abrams-produced alien invasion romp “Cloverfield” — only after Damien Chazelle, one of the writers, decided to make the jazz drummer drama instead. And so the hotly-anticipated thriller became the 34-year-old Philadelphia native’s feature debut. Trachtenberg, a Temple University alum, first caught Hollywood’s
attention with “Portal: No Escape,” a 2011 short that became a viral sensation. “10 Cloverfield Lane” allows him to start small: It’s set almost entirely in an underground bunker with only three main characters, trying to stay alive during a massive attack — although they might not be safe down there, either. How nervous were you on your first big movie? The first shot we did on was the shot of [Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character] waking up. It starts as a closeup on her face and wraps
around her. We had moving walls, so the shot was this crazy choreographed dance, where the camera wrapped around her and the grips had to fly the walls away then bring them back in. We did so many takes. I felt like the audience watching the movie; I was on the edge of my seat, saying, “Please happen, please happen, I’m an idiot for starting out this way.” I worried it would set the tone for the whole shoot — “Who’s this guy who can’t even get a shot done?” We GETTY finally did get IMAGES it, and that was

incredibly rewarding. This is also your first time directing name actors. On top of that they have a lot of dialogue. Your work up to this point hasn’t involved either. How did you handle that? Mary’s role is largely nonverbal. She’s constantly reacting to things, but always finding a way to be pro-active. I felt excited to tell that very visual story with her. You’re always aware what she’s thinking. You feel like you’re in her shoes. But those scenes with so much dialogue were very new to me. I was intimidated by them, but also excited to execute them. So much of prepping for a movie is logistical and mechanical. It turns out all your favorite conversations happen with actors, because they’re all about story and character. That’s the stuff

you’re most concerned with. We all had really high bulls— meters. I really don’t like less performy acting. I like grounded performances. And they all felt the same way. You were also working with J.J. Abrams. How hands-on was he as a producer? How did he help you out? He was all things. He was shooting “Star Wars” when we were shooting, so he could never be on set. But he was watching all of our dailies and he was sending these awesome emails that were
so encouraging. He was constantly involved in the development of the script. He was really influential in terms of the sound of the movie, and for editorial stuff, like keeping up the pace. Pace is so important to him. We were editing at the same time and did reshoots in the same building. It felt like summer camp, but instead of making elbow macaroni and swimming we were making movies together. He likes a homegrown feel, to make it feel like we’re all in the backyard together, making movies.

20 MUSIC
Not quite a psychologist Singer-songwriter Pete Yorn is back with his sixth studio album.
JIM WRIGHT
But Pete Yorn can still get inside your head. CHRIS CAESAR @ChrisCaesar
letters@metro.us
It’s been six years since Pete Yorn released a solo record, and 10 years since the multi-instrumentalist decided to forgo a studio band and handle the heavy-lifting himself. While Yorn’s tackled other projects in between, he tells us he felt called back to explore the methods that informed his earlier albums. His sixth full-length album, “Arranging Time,”came out last week from Capitol, and Yorn, who kicks off the U.S. leg of his tour in New York on March 15, chats with us about looking backward while staying present. What inspired you to hop back into the studio? I just had some music in me that needed to get out, you know? At the end of the day, that’s what I do. I was involved in music during that period, like with my other band, The Olms, and I was definitely exploring stuff, but at some point I just felt like I wanted to make a solo record and play mostly by myself. It’s just a natural cycle that kind of comes around. I hadn’t done it in a few records and it just felt like, yeah, I kinda want to do this again. You released “Summer Was a Day” back in November, and on Facebook you wrote that working with [producer] R. Walt Vincent again was like “creating fresh new material that felt like a furthering of a conversation we had started back in 2001.” A lot of your music deals
with personal growth and change; this album in particular is about time changing quickly. What kind of conversation were you having when you made your first record? I was like 25 when I made the first record, and I had my experiences up to that point as a person. I haven’t changed so much what I think I am writing about, I think tons of people write about love, loss, regret, anxiety, guilt, desire, and all that s—t goes into my songs. And I’m always kind of examining that as a human being: examining it in myself, people around me, popular culture, movies anything I see. Now I’m able to approach songwriting and that process with new eyes. I do want to be clear: going back to work with Walt Vincent and all that — I know a lot of my fans know him from “Musicforthemorningafter” — but I wasn’t trying to make a record like that. Really, the reason is that I wanted to play with myself, bouncing around in the studio, and Walt is a great partner for that. How much spontaneity is involved in the studio when you’re recording like this? That’s what it’s all about. Every song is different, but typically I’ll only have about 80 percent of the song written [when I record], because I know there will be some weird stuff that happens in the studio you can’t account for and that will take you somewhere you didn’t even expect — I would hate to close myself off to the magic that happens. So yeah, we set up a situation in all of these studios: there’s a guitar station, there’s a
If you go March 15 at 7 p.m. Irving Plaza 17 Irving Pl. 212-777-6800 www.irvingplaza.com
keyboard station, there’s drum station and a drum machine station. And I just go around and can follow along where the song takes me. You’ve said that the title of the album is “a reminder to be present” and that the album itself is a contemplation on the past and “how much of it is a blur.” What made you want to explore those themes in this album? It’s where I approach every day from. I’m approaching my life that way, my interactions with people that way, and therefore, when I go in the studio I need to approach it that way as well. For me, when I think about the characters in each song, some are dealing with feelings of longing for the past, there are some who are focused on the future and others sitting Zen-like in the middle, taking it all in. I think I always try to think about all those perspectives when I write. It’s just kind of what I’m into, I guess. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be something like a psychologist. Why is that? I’m into the mind, and perceptions, and the ways people perceive each other and perceive moments, and how people arrange their time — how much of their day is just spent trying to get into the next moment?

Securing employment is one of the most stressful parts of graduating from college — but it doesn’t have to be. The National Center for Education Statistics puts the employment rate for young graduates at 69 percent. These tips can help recent grads put their degree to work. Ask questions during interviews: Expressing enthusiasm during a job interview shows employers that you’re interested in more than just the position. It shows you’re also interested in the company as a whole, and where you fit in it. Questions impress a potential employer, and they help you. An interview is as

HOW TO GET AHEAD much a chance for you to interview them, and find out if the company is a place you can see yourself building a long-term career. Automotive entrepreneur Dave Cantin’s advice to grads? “Be curious” and “ask as many questions as you can.” Seize every opportunity: In the words of the Rolling Stones, you can’t always get what you want. Only 51 percent of graduates said their job was related to their college major, according to a 2014 Careerbuilder survey. The reality is, every opportunity won’t be your No. 1 choice, but every opportunity is a learning experience. Can’t get a job right away? “Join professional organizations,” suggests Helene Cruz, director of career counseling at Pace University.

jobs education
Don’t let lack of experience stop you: Sometimes, a thin resume may stop recent grads from even applying to jobs of interest, but it shouldn’t, says Cantin. “Just because someone interned in that position doesn’t mean they’re better or have better qualities in that position over somebody that hasn’t done it yet. It just means that somebody has more experience.” Show employers that you have the skills and the personality to work efficiently in the workplace.
Turn that internship into full-time work: Universities are constantly stressing the importance of interning throughout your academic career. Not only does an internship under your belt make you a competitive job candidate, it could also open
up doors for you within the company, Cantin says: “The best advice I could give to somebody while they’re interning is to stress your ability so that your manager knows that you are interested in a full-time position.” Even if you don’t get a job, stay in touch with your bosses. Says Cruz, “LinkedIn is a great tool. Every now and then drop somebody a line.” Take advantage of alumni career services: Career services can be a huge help for recent graduates looking for employment. Career counselors have the resources to tap into alumni networks, and they receive job offers daily for students and alumni. “Our advice: Start early,” Cruz says.

Is your workplace gender biased? Do unconscious preferences sway employers more than we think? A new book suggests the answer is yes. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa
alizah.salario@metro.us
From the résumés that get noticed to the way workplaces are designed, gender bias plays out in far more subtle — and unconscious — ways than we might think, argues Harvard University behavioral economist Iris Bohnet in her book, “What Works: Gender Equality by Design.” We spoke with Bohnet about how companies can level the field. Many companies us diversity training to achieve equality, so why are our workplaces still biased? A very important insight
PROVIDED
You might not be as progressive and unbiased as you think you are. ISTOCK
is that we, or our minds, tend to put people into categories. That’s just how our minds work. When we see a male kindergarten teacher, for example, or a female engineer, we don’t naturally associate those jobs with men or women. How does unconscious bias affect hiring? Résumés are fraught with bias because they trigger some things we might not be aware of. Sadly enough, research can show that depending on whether the name is male or female, and what racial background the name signals, the likelihood that the person gets a call is significantly affected. What other ways do we see bias play out before a person even gets the job?
Notice of FY 2016 Annual Public Meetings The Board of Directors of the New York City Health + Hospitals invite you to attend its Fiscal Year 2016 Annual Public Meetings in accordance with §7384(10) of the HHC Enabling Act. Following a report on the activities of the health system, the public is invited to make oral and/or written presentations. Allotted speaking time is FIVE (5) minutes. Speakers are asked to register in advance by writing or calling: Ms. Patricia Lockhart, Secretary to the Corporation, New York City Health + Hospitals, 125 Worth Street, Room 519, New York, New York 10013 - Telephone: 212-788-3360 Interpreter and American Sign Language services are available upon request in advance of registration deadline dates only. On-site registration will be available at each location on the day of the meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m. Speakers who register in advance will be given priority on the speaking schedule. These Events are Wheelchair Accessible
Interviews are actually the place we’re most concerned about because employers tend to think they have good intuition, but that’s where bias kicks in. Like, “I just learned that he likes the same football team as I do, he must be a great production editor.” Clearly, things that have nothing to do with each other. How can companies use design to eliminate bias? In the ’70s, major orchestras in the U.S. introduced curtains and had their musicians audition behind a screen. The likelihood that women would make the next rounds increased by 50 percentage points. The curtains played a very important role in introducing female musicians in to orchestras. This is a design intervention.

The time has come to pick your losers, watch a bevy of improbable upsets and lose interest in the second weekend after your bracket falls apart. The South is headlined by No. 1 overall seed Kansas, which faces Austin Peay. But an intriguing matchup will be the No. 8-9 match between Colorado and UConn. These teams have the firepower to pull an upset over the Jayhawks. Some other talented clubs with Final 4 talent are in the South, with Maryland slated to face South Dakota state as a five-seed and Cal, a four-seed facing Hawaii. Villanova is the No. 2 seed on the south, a surprising move that will force the Wildcats to chase their postseason hopes away from Philadelphia. Temple, which survived the bubble, has a tough 10-7 battle against Iowa in the South too. Also keep an eye out for a great play-in match up between Vanderbilt and Wichita State.
West Region The Oregon Ducks will have a few challenges
• East Region — North Carolina The 28-6 Tar Heels were dominant down the stretch, winning their rubber match against Duke and triumphing as both the ACC regular season champs and in the conference tournament. • South Region — Kansas The Jayhawks, at 30-4, were the best team in one of the best conferences in the country in the Big 12. • Midwest Region — Virginia A second No. 1 seed from the ACC, the Cavaliers finished the year at 26-7 and will boast the top billing for the first time in decades. • West Region — Oregon: The first-ever No. 1 seed for Oregon, they won the Pac-12 and went 28-6.
in their bracket as well, first and foremost the Baylor Bears (who face Yale) in an intriguing 5-vs-12 matchup. Grayson Allen and the Duke Blue Devils earned a No. 4 seed and will face another North Carolina team in No. 13-ranked UNC Wilmington and could
be bounced by Baylor in Round 2. A bit further down the bracket, Oklahoma, a squad that had a legitimate chance at a 1-seed, will play in Oklahoma city against Cal State-Bakersfield. The last team in the top four is Texas A&M. On upset alert is Texas, which faces always tournament-tough Iowa State.
East Region All eyes will be on UNC in the East regional, but tough No. 4 and No. 5 seeds will be eyeing the Tar Heels, winners of the ACC regular season and tournament, as the region marches toward Philadelphia. No. 5 Indiana, if they thwart Chattanooga will face Kentucky, the No. 4 seed (if they take care of Stony Brook). Both of these powerhouses could create very interesting matchups against North Carolina. On the bottom of the Eastern bracket is Xavier, the region’s No. 2, and No. 3 West Virginia, both looking to be snipers against the highly-touted Heels. Michigan and Tulsa will play in a play-in fight for No. 11.
Midwest Region Virginia is the top dog in the final region and will have to watch out for Purdue, the No. 5 seed (which faces Little Rock), and No. 4 Iowa State (facing Iona). Michigan State learned its fate late in Sunday’s selection show, and will star as the No. 2 seed (and will face Middle Tennessee). If they advance, they’ll put their Big 10 title to the test against the winner of the 10-7 match between Dayton and Syracuse. Rounding out the bracket are No. 3 seed Utah (facing Fresno State) and No. 6 Seton Hall (facing No. 11 Gonzaga).
