LYFT, GM ROLL OUT CAR RENTAL PROGRAM TO ATTRACT MORE DRIVERS

1

Drivers for ride-hailing app Lyft will no longer face the imperative of owning a car under a rental program launched with General Motors. The initiative is the first to come out of a two-monthold partnership between the automotive giant and ride service upstart, and is Lyft’s latest move to get more drivers on its app as it continues to trail ride-hailing behemoth Uber. To kick off the program, GM will provide a fleet of 125 Chevrolet Equinox cars to drivers in Chicago by the end of the month, the companies said. “We have now made car ownership optional on both sides of the market,” said Lyft President and co-founder John Zimmer. Passengers don’t need to own a car if they use Lyft, he said, and now drivers do not need to own a car to work for it. REUTERS

FIGHTING SPREADS IN SOUTHEAST TURKEY AFTER ANKARA BOMB

2

Fighting between Turkish security forces and Kurdish militants spread, with tanks, helicopters and armored cars deployed after a suicide bombing that killed 37 people in the capital Ankara. The deadliest violence took place in Diyarbakir, the largest city in mainly Kurdish southeastern Turkey, where Kurdistan Workers Party fighters blocked roads and clashed with security forces overnight as a police helicopter flew overhead, witnesses said. One police officer and three militants were killed in Diyarbakir and a second police officer was killed in the town of Nusaybin, where the PKK launched an attack, security sources said. No one has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s car bomb that tore through a crowded transport hub in Ankara, but security officials have blamed two members of the outlawed separatist PKK. REUTERS

RESTAURANTS TO ALLOW CANINES AT OUTDOOR TABLES

3

New York City dogs will find it even easier to beg for scraps under new rules that allow them to sit with their owners at restaurants’ outdoor tables. The city’s health department on Tuesday released new regulations under a state law passed last year that permits municipalities to set their own rules for dogs in outdoor dining areas. Under the rules, dogs must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies, though restaurants will not be required to verify that dogs have the proper paperwork as an earlier draft had called for. Instead, participating restaurants must post signs to alert customers to the requirements. The regulations take effect in mid-April, just as the outdoor dining season begins in earnest. REUTERS

What’s a little mumps between roomies? While a handful of campuses have reported mumps infections, basic precautions and education about symptoms should keep students safe. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

A number of college campuses in the greater Boston area reported mumps infections on their campuses this year, including a handful of students at Harvard, Bentley, UMass Boston and a recent case discovered on the Tufts campus. Should students be alarmed? Not really. Though Boston received nine reports of the mumps so far this year, the disease is “no longer very common,” according to the Centers for Disease Control. That being said, the number of cases can vary widely each year, from a couple hundred to thousands — for example, in 2010, the United States

saw 2,612 cases, but only 229 in 2012. So, it’s not unusual to see a burst of infections from time to time, especially on college campuses, where students often live in cramped proximity to one another. According to The Boston Globe, mumps outbreaks were reported on campuses in the Bay State in 2006, 2008 and 2013. While the state has strict laws requiring students in college and K-12 receive multiple measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations before they attend school, the vaccine is effective only about 88 percent of the time in preventing an infection. “Nothing in medicine works 100 percent of the time, of course,” Dr. Ani-

Judge blocks Boston’s effort to shorten route The seal of Harvard Law School is seen on a map. GETTY IMAGES

Harvard to retire law school seal tied to slavery Harvard University will replace the official shield of its prestigious law school which features the family crest of an 18th century slave holder, after students objected to its racist associations, the school said on Monday. The Harvard Corporation, the Massachusetts university’s governing body, voted to approve a recommendation by a Harvard Law School committee to retire the shield. The decision comes as emblems linked to slavery on college and public properties have been the target of protests by students and others who see them as insensitive. Harvard President Drew Faust told Martha Minow, dean of the law school, on Monday that the university backed the recommendation. Designed in 1936, the shield displays three sheaves of wheat taken from the Royalls family coat of arms, with the university’s motto, “Veritas,” the Latin word for

truth, scrolled on three panels across the top. The emblem was modeled on the coat of arms of the family of Isaac Royall, who media reports said was the son of an Antiguan slaveholder and endower of the first law professorship at Harvard. A committee organized by the law school voted to recommend scraping it after criticism by a student group. Faust said she hoped the law school would introduce a new seal in time for the law school’s bicentennial in 2017. “While we accept the request to change the shield, we do so on the understanding that the school will actively explore other steps to recognize rather than to suppress the realities of its history, mindful of our shared obligation to honor the past not by seeking to erase it, but rather by bringing it to light and learning from it,” she wrote. Organizers had sued to keep a longer version of the St. Patrick’s Day parade route.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked an effort by the city of Boston to shorten this Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, saying that city officials would be violating parade organizers’ right to free assembly and expression. Mayor Martin Walsh early this month said the city would cut the 115-year-old parade’s permitted route through South Boston by half to 1.6 miles, a move that he said would dramatically cut the cost of policing the event, which

draws tens of thousands of sometimes rowdy revelers. It would have been the second year in a row the parade marched on a shortened route; Walsh last year requested the

cut as Boston struggled to clean up a record-setting 9 feet of snowfall. The parade organizers, the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, fought the effort to shorten this year’s

parade, suing the city in U.S. District Court in Boston and contending this year’s cuts violated organizers’ constitutionally protected rights to free assembly and expression. REUTERS

MBTA to release employee performance data The MBTA will release new data showing that employees’ overtime rates and absenteeism declined during the first two months of 2016, which led to 37 percent fewer dropped trips for weekday rail service. The MBTA’s new report, set to be presented during Wednesday’s Fiscal and Management

Control Board meeting, showed the benefits of a new leave and attendance policy that was instituted in January, according to an MBTA release from Chief Administrator Brian Shortsleeve. “This is a positive sign that the new leave policy is having an effect,” Shortsleeve was

quoted in the release. According to the report, overtime expenses were down 54 percent compared to the same period last year, and year-to-date overtime hours had decreased by 52 percent, the MTBA said. “We’re looking at overtime every day and every week,” Shortsleeve said in the release, which added that bus and train operator absenteeism was down 29 percent, translating to a 40 percent reduction in dropped bus

trips and 37 percent fewer dropped weekday rail trips. The new leave policy mandated that MBTA employees run their accrued paid leave and personal and vacation days concurrently with days under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the MBTA reported. “We want to do better, and we’re going to continue to cut it down,” Shortsleeve said, discussing the T’s overtime, absenteeism and dropped trip rate. Having loyal Tea Party supporters could also help him fend off moves to block his nomination at the Republican National Convention in July if he falls short of the threshold of 1,237 delegates that would guarantee him the party’s candidacy. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has effectively split the conservative Tea Party movement, as his fiery campaign draws in followers of the group who had been expected to line up behind Ted Cruz, a more consistent champion of small government. As the Republican race moves to the crucial battlegrounds of Ohio and Florida among three other states on Tuesday, Tea Party support promises to help Trump’s campaign offset its relative lack of

on-the-ground organization compared to Texas Senator Cruz, his closest rival nationally. A Reuters review of Trump’s list of 66 Ohio delegates -- who would represent him at the nominating convention if he wins the primary and provide crucial support in the event of a contested convention -- found that 28 are Tea Party leaders, members or are otherwise linked to the movement, including officials who have been featured speakers at Tea Party events. Using the same benchmark, 27 of Cruz’s delegates have links with the grassroots group, which sprang to national prominence in 2009 on anger over government bailouts, and demands for tax cuts and less “intrusive” government. Despite Trump’s mixed record as a conservative, the real estate mogul’s promises to shake up Washington, throw out illegal immigrants and tear up “unfair” trade deals have won over many influ-

House Speaker Ryan calls for less violence on campaign trail House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday condemned efforts to disrupt political rallies, but said all presidential candidates must bear responsibility to help curb violence at campaign events and create a less hostile atmosphere. “All candidates have an obligation to do what they can do ...provide an atmosphere of harmony, to reduce violence, to not incite violence,” Ryan told reporters, speaking after a string of chaotic events that have been most notable at campaign rallies for front-runner Donald Trump. BRIEF Liberal groups urge nonviolent movement to stop Trump U.S. liberal groups, divided in their support of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have urged a united, active opposition to Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner. In an open letter released on Tuesday, a group of liberal organizations called for a “non-violent movement” to thwart Trump’s candidacy for November’s general election, calling the New York billionaire a “hate-peddling bigot who openly incites violence.” “This is a five-alarm fire for our democracy,” said the letter, which was signed by the leaders of the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org, a supporter of Sanders, and the Service Employees International Union, a major labor union that is

backing Clinton. Representatives of 20 other groups signed the letter, which was published online as Americans in five states voted in the latest round of primary contests to pick party nominees for the Nov. 8 election. Trump has alarmed many in America, not just liberals, with his campaign rhetoric, from calling Mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers to his proposal to ban Muslims temporarily from entering the United States. Protests have become a recurring, noisy feature at Trump’s rallies and in recent days, tensions have risen sharply as a few of Trump’s mostly white supporters have punched or bloodied protesters, many of whom are black or Latino, in scuffles in or outside campaign venues. BRIEF Russian warplanes leave Syria, raising UN hopes for peace talks Russian warplanes flew home from Syria on Tuesday as Moscow started to withdraw forces that have tipped the war President Bashar al-Assad’s way, and the U.N. envoy said he hoped the move would help peace talks in Geneva. As the first aircraft touched down in Russia, U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura called President

Vladimir Putin’s move a “significant development” toward resolving a crisis which this week passes its fifth anniversary. While Assad’s opponents hope the announcement signals a shift in Russian support, its full significance has yet to become clear: Russia is keeping an air base and an undeclared number of forces in Syria. Russian jets were in action against Islamic State on Tuesday. Assad also still enjoys military

backing from Iran, which has sent forces to Syria along with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Putin’s surprise announcement has led to speculation that Moscow may want to press Assad toward showing more flexibility at the Geneva talks, where his government has ruled out discussion of the presidency or a negotiated transfer of power. Damascus has dismissed any talk of differences with its ally and says the move was

coordinated and the result of army gains on the ground. Russia, however, last month expressed frustration with Assad, saying he was out of step with its diplomacy. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, whose government supports the opposition, indicated the gaps in Western understanding of Putin, saying he had “no insight at all into Russia’s strategy” after a decision that came out of the blue. Brussels raid house of Paris suspects Streets around the house in a southern section of the city were sealed off by police, journalists at the scene said. Belgian police on Tuesday killed a gunman in a raid on a Brussels apartment linked to Islamist militants involved in November’s Paris attacks, and two others were on the run, state broadcaster RTBF reported. Belgium’s federal prosecutor said earlier one or more suspects had barricaded themselves into an apartment after police had come under heavy weapon fire through a door when carrying out the raid. Belgian media said four police officers were wounded. Belgian daily DH said one suspect was shot dead after being spotted from a police helicopter in a nearby garden. Phone calls made by Reuters seeking comment from police and prosecutors were not answered. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said French police took part in the raid in the Belgian capital. Streets around the house in a southern section of the

city were sealed off by police, Reuters journalists at the scene said. “This operation is connected to the Paris attacks,” a spokesman for Belgium’s federal prosecutor said. Reuters journalists heard gunshots as police commandos crowded into the street where the raid unfolded. Investigators believe much of the planning and preparation for the Nov. 13 bombing and shooting rampage in Paris that killed 130 people were carried out by young French and Belgian nationals, some of whom fought in Syria for Islamic State. The area around Tuesday’s raid, near a car factory and a major northsouth railway linking Paris and Amsterdam, was sealed off, and a police helicopter buzzed overhead. Police told residents to stay indoors and schools and kindergartens close to the scene of the shootings were in lockdown, residents said. Belgian security forces have been actively hunting suspects and associates of the militants involved in the attacks in Paris. Some of the attackers came from Brussels. REUTERS

Jaden Smith will wear a dress, OK? Second-generation Hollywood scion and Twitter capitalization abuser Jaden Smith wants to make one thing clear: He doesn’t care what you think about him wearing skirts and dresses, so stop trying to impose your outmoded ideas of fashion and gender norms on him. Sheesh. “I feel like people are kind of confused about gender norms. I feel like people don’t really get it,” he tells British GQ. “I’m not saying that I get it, I’m just saying that I’ve never seen any distinction. I don’t see man clothes and woman clothes, I just see scared people and comfortable people.” But, if you thought for a moment that maybe you and Smith the Younger were finally seeing eye to eye on something and maybe, just maybe, the musingprone teen was finally making sense, he’s got some world-healing

I really just want to create a utopia on this planet,” he says. “I really want to make it so that people don’t have to die to pay bills and just work to survive. So that they can work to actually live and do the things that they love to do.” Oh, is that all?

the word

Kerry Washington doesn’t know how she can make this any clearer: She doesn’t talk about her personal life. In interviews, on Twitter, wherever. And that means not addressing rumors that she and husband Nnamdi Asomugha are headed for a divorce. “I think — and this is something Reese Witherspoon has talked

about a lot — it’s a little different for me because I don’t talk about my personal life,” the “Scandal” star said during a SXSW panel. “Social media has actually been great for [other celebrities’] relationships with the weeklies or the gossip sites because people say things and they say, ‘That’s not true! Just so you know, that’s BS!’” While that’s tempting, that’s not Washington’s M.O., though. “If I don’t talk about my personal life, it means I don’t talk about my personal life,” she added. “That means not only did I not tell you when I was getting married, it also means if somebody has rumors about what’s going on in my marriage, I don’t refute them, because I don’t talk about my personal life.” So … no comment, then?

Ben Affleck is fine with Ricky Gervais joking about him The new “Batman v Superman” movie is nearly upon us, which means we’re about to see a noted uptick in Ben Affleck interviews. And while I’m not expecting him to be as forthcoming as soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Garner was in Vanity Fair, he’s going to have to say something. And look! He’s already started. The New York Times asked

Affleck about Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes joke made at his expense — “He’s also the only person who Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to: Please welcome Matt Damon” — and Affleck’s totally down. “It’s the way Ricky Gervais perceives me, I suppose,” Affleck says. “I’ve had jokes made at my expense before. It’s part of the deal.”

Why is Selena trying to blow up Kendall’s spot? To hear Selena Gomez tell it, Kendall Jenner is totes dating someone, along with the rest of her friends. “None of them are single, just so you know,” Gomez said in an interview this week with London’s Capital FM radio. “Taylor [Swift] is not single, Gigi [Hadid] is not single, neither is Kendall. I am the only single one.” Poor thing. But maybe she’s not so alone in her aloneness, as sources at E! News are quick to

correct her on Jenner’s relationship status: “Kendall is single,” the source says. “She is not dating Harry [Styles] anymore, but they are still friends and if they are in the same city they likely would [hang out]. Nobby speaks Sacha Baron Cohen talks to us in the guise of his “Brothers Grimsby” character.

Painful Varicose Veins & Swollen Legs?

LUBA EGOROVA @MetroBOS

Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic problem. They are associated with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), both of which claim up to 300,000 lives a year in the United States.

letters@metro.us

Sacha Baron Cohen, in atypical fashion, hasn’t been doing the press tours for his new film “The Brothers Grimsby” entirely in character. One reason: Unlike Ali G, Borat and Bruno, his newest character — Nobby, the Northern English hooligan and layabout at the helm of the action-comedy — is too new and not widely known. But he did some interviews in character — including this one. We spoke to Cohen-as-Nobby for the dirty, crazy, politically incorrect movie, which finds him reuniting with his long-lost brother (Mark Strong), who just happens to be a James Bond-ian superspy. Do you ever feel ashamed? Well, I’m hungover, I’m covered in vomit, my older son’s been arrested for burning down his school and my 9-year-old just got his probation officer pregnant. So today, no, I’m not ashamed, I’m proud. I’m also proud that, apart from me, four other cast members in this movie

are actually from Grimsby, which makes it the town’s biggest employer! I don’t believe in shame. I think life’s about balance — fun and responsibility. Yes, have a drink, yes, have a smoke, yes, have a little gamble, maybe even drugs … but then it’s homework and straight off to bed. I’m a tough dad, but you have to be. Russia’s been in the news a great deal of late. What do you know about that country? When I became a spy, I had to learn all sorts of amazing facts about Russia. For example, I’ve noticed from my research — Bond films and pornography — that Russian women are generally sexier than the girls where I’m from. When the Vikings arrived in England — raping and pillaging — and got to Grimsby, they said: “Do you know what? Let’s maybe just do some pillaging here.” In the film, you put some firecrackers up your behind, which actually didn’t look that funny … Well, it wasn’t funny for me either, especially when I realized it was in the wrong way and was supposed to be pointing out. Why on earth isn’t there a warning on the box? What is your favorite story from the set? Probably the funniest

thing I’ve seen in a long time was when Penelope Cruz, who’s in our movie, showed us her favorite party trick: playing the whole of “Hello” by Adele out of her bottom — note perfect. She didn’t even soil herself — though apparently that chord change in the second chorus can get a bit messy sometimes. Thank you for the laughs, Penelope. And thank you for leaving your trailer unlocked. If anybody wants to buy a Spanish version of “Mein Kampf” it’s on eBay. Do you think our planet is overpopulated? I was chatting about this exact thing last night with my girlfriend and 11 children. I reckon it’s probably because countries are shrinking. When will we achieve world peace? All I know is that if we just put our differences aside and love one another, nothing ever gets sorted out. No, I’m actually a peace-afist. I think we have to love one another, especially our children. My kids are the reason I get up in the afternoon. Do you think of yourself as scum? No. And even if I am, it’s scum who built the hospitals, the factories and the mansions for rich people to live in. It’s scum who keep the “Fast and Furious” franchise alive.

The spy snitch Holly Taylor of “The Americans” discusses her character’s Season Four dilemma. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Holly Taylor calls us after leaving Wayne Hills High School in New Jersey, where she’s balancing her senior year and starring in FX’s spy drama “The Americans.” The 18-yearold actress plays Paige Jennings, the up-until-lastseason unknowing teenage daughter of agents Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys). In a devastating moment of panic, Taylor’s character blows her parents’ cover to her confidante — Pastor Tim (Kelly AuCoin) — in the Season 3 finale after they reveal their plan to fold her into their Russian informant scheme. Taylor, on the other hand, is as cool as a cucumber, having mastered

maneuvering out of her crowded parking lot following the 2:16 p.m. final bell at school. She’s worked out a plan with her teachers that allows for her to keep up with her filming obligations. “It’s kind of disappointing because everyone has told me that senior year would be the easiest, but I might want to sue everyone who told me that because there’s so much going on ” she laughs. Her character picks up in Season Four — premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. — and will be faced with the unpleasant ramifications of her ratting out her parents. Taylor weighs in on Paige’s upcoming consequences. The scene at the end of Season 3, where Paige calls Pastor Tim, must have been so dramatic to film, because not only is it emotionally charged, it’s totally one-sided. What was that like for you? That was an exciting

scene to film, and I knew it would be challenging because when I have to be emotional and cry, I’ll usually react off of what other people are doing. But for that, it’s just me talking and we couldn’t hear Pastor Tim on the other end of the phone. Dan Sackheim directed that episode and he was really helpful and got me to that headspace. He made sure I had time to collect my thoughts in-between takes and it

Do you think Paige would be a good spy? She would make a good spy, but it might take some time for her to come around to the idea. There are a lot of parallels between the way her and Elizabeth [the mother] live their lives. We’ve seen [Paige] be really passionate with activism and the church, and Elizabeth has been the same way

J.B. SMOOVE

Was there any ad-libbing to that conversation? At one point, Paige specifically tells Pastor Tim, “They’re not Americans,” which is so funny given the name of the show. No, that was all very specific to the script. That’s her way of trying to break it down and understand it. [That phrase] was opposite of the show [title], but that’s the irony of the show. I think that’s

a big revelation that Paige is seeing now.

I saw you retweeting a fan comment that Paige is actually the only “good guy” of the show because she turns in Russian spies. What did you think about that concept? I thought that was so interesting because a lot of the times people bash Paige, like “How could she do that?” But when you remove yourself from the connection to Elizabeth and Philip, we realize we’re generally an American audience, who at that time were rooting for Americans. It’s hard to be on a show where you’re rooting for the other side, and it’s not until you remove yourself from it that you can gain perspective. A lot of the fans are so passionate, but in real life, that’s what we would have wanted. We would have wanted the spies to be turned in. I think that’s one of the real debates of the show. “The Americans” Season 4 premiere on FX Wednesday at 10 p.m.

“SCARFACE

Simon Pegg and Lake Bell make for a good, bickering rom-com team in last year’s “Man Up. SABAN FILMS

The romantic-comedy is dying, and perhaps only indies can save it. Like last year’s “Sleeping With Other People, this British number — in which Lake Bell and Simon Al Pacino has never been more unhinged than he was in 1983’s “Scarface. PROVIDED

Brian De Palma’s purple, bloody remake of Howard Hawks’ gangster great is now a stone-cold classic. But it’s easy to forget it wasn’t actually a bomb. It was a big hit — it was just hated and debated, riling many with its excesses: its gargantuan length, its fearless gore and Al Pacino’s ridiculously accented turn, chewing not just the scenery but maybe the whole universe. The

hip-hop community helped reclaim it, as did another group of fanboys: De Palma nerds. “Scarface joins the likes of “Phantom of the Paradise, “Blow Out and “Femme Fatale as De Palmas whose craft and eccentricity were bound to be appreciated eventually — though here you can also thank Oliver Stone, whose cussy script provided the foundation for three hours of thrilling set pieces.

Pegg go on an accidental date — both dismantles cliches and embraces them. It’s more of a rom-com than it sometimes lets on, but at least it’s a sharp and prickly one.

Five Cancer Screening Tips for Men

Christopher Lathan, MD, of the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Cancer affects thousands of men across the United States every year, with the most common diagnoses coming in the form of prostate, colon, testicular, lung, and skin cancer. Not all cancers can be detected early on, but for some forms of the disease, the spread of cancer can be prevented through screenings. Here are five things you need to know about men’s health screenings:

1. Prostate Cancer One in every six men is affected by prostate cancer, which most often affects men over age 50. In addition, age, family history, diet and lifestyle, and race can all affect your risk and influence how often and at what age you should be screened. The most common screening is for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which measures the blood level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland. Screening recommendations: s Age 18-40: Usually not required. s Age 40-49: Discuss your risk level with your physician. Screening is recommended if you are considered high risk. s Age 50+: Discuss screening with your physician.

2. Colorectal Cancer While anyone can develop colorectal cancer, most cases are found in people age 50 and older, and everyone over 50-years old should be screened. Colorectal cancer screening for people under the age of 50 depends on the presence of other risk factors including adenomas (polyps), diet, family history, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and a prior diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Screening tests can include flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, double-contrast barium enema, and CT colonography. Screening recommendations: s Ages 18-39: Screening is usually not necessary unless you have IBD, a concerning history of cancers in your family, or hereditary syndromes such as Lynch syndrome or FAP. s !GES Review your risks annually with your physician. You may need to begin screening if you are at increased risk. s !GES Everyone should be screened.

3. Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer may be the most common form of cancer for men ages 15-40, but fortunately it is also one of the most curable forms of cancer. Men should be encouraged to examine their testicles once a month and report any change in the way the testicle feels (increased size, lump in testicle, hard area) to their doctor right away. It is also important to speak with a doctor if you notice a dull ache in the lower stomach or groin, back pain, or pain/ discomfort in the testicle itself. Screening for testicular cancer is easy and painless and can be done through a testicular exam, ultrasound, or blood test.

4. Lung Cancer Although anyone can develop lung cancer, 80 percent of all lung cancers are caused by smoking and quitting smoking will lower your risk for lung cancer. There is currently no standard screening for lung cancer. If you have a family history of the disease or are experiencing symptoms such as trouble breathing, chest discomfort, or blood in sputum, discuss testing options with your doctor. Other risk factors include previous diagnosis of lung cancer, exposure to asbestos, previous radiation to the chest for

treating other cancer, prolonged exposure to high levels of radon, and chronic high-level exposure to second-hand smoke. Some tests, such as a chest CT scan, can help your physician get a better view of what is going on.

5. Skin Cancer Skin cancer is a rapidly growing disease that affects one in five Americans. The best way to prevent skin cancer is to use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, wear hats and eye protection, and avoid excessive exposure to the sun. To screen for skin cancer, anyone over 18 should complete a monthly self-exam to look for any new moles or changes to existing moles or birthmarks and have a physician evaluate them during your annual exam. Regular dermatologist appointments are important, particularly if you have a large number of moles, atypical moles or a family history of melanoma. Experts recommend using the “ABCDE rule” to help determine when a physician should see a mole or skin change. For more information on cancer screenings visit www.dana-farber.org. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is world renowned for its leadership in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research. Designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), it is one of the largest recipients among independent hospitals of NCI and National Institutes of Health grant funding. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time.

This year’s Boston Flower & Garden Show’s Nurtured by Nature theme hopes to serve as the antidote to our harsh winters. With landscape gardens, floral arrangements and numerous hands-on activities, the show offers plant lovers throughout New England a taste of spring. “The theme was suggested by last year’s difficult winter, when it felt like nature was kind of our enemy,” show director Carolyn Weston says. “We just wanted to remind people that while gardening takes

some effort, it has many, many rewards.” The event returns to the Seaport World Trade Center and will feature demos and workshops like the The Growing & Harvesting of Tea and Urban Beekeeping. Many of the activities cater to urban gardening in an effort to help Bostonians stay in touch with nature. Plus, most of the plants featured at the show are from the New England area, so any plants guests take home shouldn’t have trouble growing in Boston’s climate. “There’s no space too small to build a garden, whether it’s in a milk crate or a container on your windowsill or a window box. There’s plenty of ways to incorporate gardening, plants, flowers and even edibles into an urban

space,” Weston says. Those who prefer not to get their hands dirty can view the exhibitions and entries to the show’s various competitions, or check out information on how to grow their own Instagramready peonies (Passion for Peonies) or create a Pinterest-worthy hen house (Backyard Chicken Coop). There will also be about 200 vendors selling plants, seeds, plantrelated art and more. Kids can enjoy the Little Sprouts Children’s Center, where planting activities, story hour, face painting and paper flower making will be offered. The Boston Flower & Garden Show will run March 16-20 at the Seaport World Trade Center. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, $10 for children ages 6-17 and free for children under 6. Tickets after 5 p.m. are $15.
