CUBA ROLLS OUT RED CARPET FOR HISTORIC OBAMA VISIT

1

President Barack Obama embarked Sunday on a historic trip to Cuba where a Communist government that vilified the United States for decades prepared a red-carpet welcome. Lifting off from Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, D.C., Obama headed for Havana where the sight of Air Force One, America’s iconic presidential jet, touching down on Cuban soil would have been unimaginable not long ago. The three-day trip, the first by a U.S. president in 88 years, is the culmination of a diplomatic opening announced by Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro in December 2014, ending a Cold War-era estrangement that began when the Cuban revolution ousted a pro-American government in 1959. SNOWSTORM FORCES BOSTON SCHOOLS TO CLOSE TODAY

2

As a storm blew toward Boston, officials announced Sunday night that schools would be closed in the city on Monday. “An important factor in this decision is the timing of the snowstorm, with several inches of snow expected to fall during the morning commute,” read a statement released by Mayor Marty Walsh and Superintendent Tommy Chang just after 6 p.m. “Safety is the top priority of Boston Public Schools,” according to the statement. RUSSIA MOURNS PLANE CRASH VICTIMS AS INVESTIGATION BEGINS

3

Relatives gathered to mourn the 62 victims of a passenger jet crash in southern Russia on Sunday and officials warned an investigation could take weeks to determine the cause of the downing. At Rostov-on-Don airport about 400 people paid their respects to the 55 passengers and seven crew who died when the Boeing 737-800, operated by Dubai-based budget carrier Flydubai, crashed in the early hours of Saturday. Bereaved relatives laid red and white carnations on a growing pile of flowers, candles and children’s toys, framed by photos of the dead. “We mourn,” read an inscription listing the victims’ names. “What happened cannot be expressed with any words. I can’t comprehend how the relatives of the victims will go on living,” Rostov resident Marina Bondar told Reuters. REUTERS

Waking up this morning, some of you will be shoveling a heavy wet snow while others will be skipping along to work with no snow.

Boston Morning rush: Heavy wet snow. Sun returns this afternoon. Windy and cold with a high of 39. Tuesday: Sunshine and chilly. High of 44. Wednesday: Sun, then clouds mixing in. Milder, high of 56. Thursday: Few showers, windy,

cloudy, high of 50. Friday: Shower threat, milder with a high of 57. Saturday: Mostly sunny. High of 55. Sunday: Potential heavy rain to move in, late in the day. Highs in the 50s.

The coastal snowstorm is now off the Southern New England coast and pounding a good chunk of New England with heavy wet snow as late season skiers rejoice. In the storms wake, a blustery first Monday of spring will have us reaching for the winter coats this morning. We really can’t complain too much this winter season, despite the January blizzard much of this winter has been snow-free and it will go down as one of our milder winters; thank you El Niño. By Wednesday the thermometer will

begin to surge as the 60s become common once again, except along the coastal locations, as the chilly Atlantic will put a lid on the temperature rise. Your second half of the week should be on the milder side of the ledger as well with readings still in the 60s. Expect a cool front to start pushing through on Friday with the chance of a few showers. Watching the potential for a frog choker (that just means heavy rains, personally, I love frogs), arrival time for one looks like the second half of this upcoming weekend.

After route-shortening push, Southie paradewatchers hold grudge Neighborhood locals say they aren’t getting over mayorsupported effort anytime soon. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

The wounds were fresh and deep for Old Southie’s representatives on the sidewalk Sunday as the first bagpipes and drums bleated and clacked their way down Broadway. It was frustrating when the city’s mayor and police commissioner teamed up to call for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration route cleaved in half, said those who’ve grown up wearing green and watching the parade march by. Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner

William Evans this year called for a shortened path for marchers and floats, arguing it would be easier to watch over parade-watchers in a more confined area. The Allied War Veterans Council, organizers of the event, challenged the change in court on First Amendment grounds and won. So the parade followed its time-honored path. It was welcome news for Southie traditionalists.

But neighbors, clad in Celtics jerseys and green fleece, said they won’t forget the disruption that almost was. “A lot of people are pretty upset with the mayor,” said Laura Purcelo, a 41-year-old Southie lifer who just moved to Dorchester. “A lot of people are saying, ‘He’s from Dorchester — why not shorten their parade? Why South Boston?’” She was referring to the

“I totally like the full route,” Gardner said. “I’d rather not have them shorten it down. They’ve been going so long with it the way it is, I don’t think it should change.” Parade-goer Wayne Gardner, 30

summertime Dorchester Day Parade — which, spanning more than 3 miles, is roughly as long as the South Boston celebration. “It’s Southie who’s always the ones getting picked on and shorted,” said Cheryl Allen, 56. She was standing one street over from her lifetime home on Athens Street. “We’re given the raw hand all the time. It’s just

time to stop.” “I don’t know what it is with Mayor Walsh — being a Dorchester guy, if he’s got a problem with Southie,” said a scally capwearing Mike Lee, 46, joined by 7-year-old Jordyn. “You’ve got to go with tradition. St. Paddy’s breakfast brings political yuks Jokes on Donald Trump, dry cleaning and the Walsh/ Baker “bromance” abound. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

Gov. Charlie Baker’s approval rating is in the 80s. The city has courted a mega-corporation’s head honcho to the Hub. The mayor and the governor get along. So the jokes went down easy like a cold pitcher of mid-morning beer Sunday morning at the latest St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Cracks about the “bromance” between Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh abounded. In one video clip, tribute to the duo’s efforts to bring GE to the city, Walsh played the role of Adele in a moody blackand-white music video for “Hello.” Donning a fur coat and sunglasses, Walsh — as Adele — works to get Baker on the phone and kindle their relationship. At the video’s end, the pair snapped a selfie.

WE’VE RECOVERED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR OUR CLIENTS

Gov. Charlie Baker held up a laundry basket as a prop to skewer the controversy over Sen. Brian Joyce’s relationship with a Randolph dry cleaner. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

“Ever noticed how small Mayor Walsh’s hands are?” Congressman Stephen Lynch

Also in abundance were digs at the Republican presidential front-runner, with jokes about small hands and border walls recalling Donald Trump. “People here have been drinking since the crack of dawn, and yet you’re still more coherent than Donald Trump,” quipped Sen.

Elizabeth Warren. On the possibility of Republican Scott Brown joining Trump’s ticket, Warren said it would be the “perfect reality show matchup: ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ meets ‘The Biggest Loser.’” “Ever noticed how small Mayor Walsh’s hands are?” asked Congressman Stephen

Lynch, waving around giant rubber hands from the podium. The recent controversy over Walsh’s bid to shorten the route of the St. Patrick’s Day parade was also palpable in the room. Lynch joked that a bitter Southie planned to build a wall around the neighborhood — and make Walsh pay for it. When Walsh himself gave a speech, he said he’d only been given two minutes to talk, but reclaimed a five-minute slot by injunction. He joked about rumors of his aspirations beyond Boston. Repeating again and again that he didn’t have plans for higher office, a slideshow on projector screens showed him visiting the White House and the Vatican, posing with Bill Clinton and U2. Another target: Sen. Brian Joyce, the Democrat facing scrutiny for his dealings with a Randolph dry cleaner. Baker, reaching the podium, lifted a basket full of clothes into the air. “I’m sorry I’m late, I’ve been waiting for Sen. Joyce. I had some laundry that needed done,” Baker said. “Boy. I hear he gets a really good deal.”

McConnell rules out action this year on high court Republican U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Sunday ruled out Senate confirmation of Democratic President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee this year, even if after the November election it appears the next president may pick a liberal who Republicans would like even less. In television interviews, McConnell said Republican senators had no intention of confirming Democrat Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, even if Democrats win the White House in November, putting them in the position to nominate someone more liberal than Garland when the new president takes office in January.

“The principle is the same, whether it’s before the election or after the election. The principle is the American people are choosing their next president and their next president should pick this Supreme Court nominee.” Nominees to the lifetime Supreme Court post require Senate confirmation. But McConnell says the Republican-run Senate will not hold a hearing or a vote on Garland. Republicans have said they want the next president to make the selection, hoping their party wins November’s election. “I can’t imagine that a Republican-majority Congress, in a lame-duck session, after the American people have spoken (in the election), would want to confirm [Garland],” McConnell told CNN. “That’s not going to happen,” McConnell told Fox News on Sunday.

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE Trump refuses to condemn ‘UNITE violence at his election rallies Scenes of mayhem have become increasingly common at Trump’s rallies, which have been frequently interrupted by protesters, many of them Democrats, who say his controversial remarks on immigrants and Muslims are dangerous. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that “professional agitators” bore much of the blame for violence at his rallies as video showed a protester being beaten and another apparently being grabbed by Trump’s

campaign manager. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, Trump defended campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and declined to condemn supporters who have attacked protesters at his increasingly chaotic rallies. Nor did he back down from his warning that there would be riots in the streets if the Republican Party denied him the nomination for the November election, despite his being the most popular candidate among Republican voters. Senior figures in the party are openly plotting to prevent Trump from becoming the nominee because they view him as insufficiently conservative, and Trump was due

Most of the time D.C. is full of intrigue, vicious backbiting and petty disagreements, but there are the bad days, too. Right now both parties are dealing with nasty family feuds. to privately meet with some party leaders in Washington on Monday, the Washington Post reported. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I will say this, you’re going to have a lot of unhappy people,” he said on “This Week,” predicting anger at the party’s national convention in July should someone else end up the nominee. “I don’t want to see riots, I don’t want to see problems. But you’re talking about millions of people.” The 69-year-old candidate has sometimes encouraged his supporters

using violence on protesters, and on at least one occasion said that he would like to punch a protester himself. Television footage from an Arizona rally on Saturday showed a man punching and kicking a protester as he was led out of the event. Another video appeared to show Lewandowski grabbing a protester by the back of his shirt. Trump declined to condemn the violence and said it was often provoked by protesters, who briefly blocked a highway leading to an Arizona rally on Saturday. REUTERS

1. TRUMP STUMPERS Twice now the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, has thrown himself across the tracks to derail the Donald Trump train. So far, nada. The mainstreamers are getting ever more panicked over the idea Trump could be their nominee. So you’ll hear even more talk this week about a “unity ticket.” The idea is to unite all the Repubs who are against Trump behind a single challenger and force a contested convention. But either Kasich or Cruz has to abandon the race to make it work, and neither seems inclined to do so. Stay tuned … and uh, stay off the tracks. 2. CLINTONIAN CAUTION The rift between Dems does not seem nearly as deep, but it is worrisome anyway. Hillary Clinton’s camp is virtually certain they have the nomination wrapped up, but they’d like a strong showing in the western state primaries on Tuesday to seal the deal. After all, the sooner she can officially send Bernie Sanders home, the sooner she can start making nice with his followers. And she’ll need them this November, especially if the GOP hits her as

hard as expected. 3. MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE WHITE HOUSE President Obama and his surrogates will continue pressing the case for a Senate hearing on his Supreme Court nominee, and they’ll keep accusing the Republicans of playing politics. But the Dems are playing politics too. They already knew the GOPers were not going to give the nominee a nod, so they are milking it for all the headlines they can get. This is all about each side trying to make the other look unreasonable, but I think this week cooler heads will prevail and a deal is likely … nah, just kidding. Nobody will budge.

No, not Kim Kardashian, silly. I’m talking about West himself. Nobody loves Kanye like Kanye loves Kanye, which just so happens to be a concept that Australian artist Scott Marsh took and ran with, adorn-

The image is based on a make-out photo of West and Kardashian from the 2015 Grammys red carpet, so the shorter West in this scenario has a rather impressive rump — something I don’t think either Kanye would complain about in this scenario.Â

10 FILM “GROUNDHOG DAY”

New on Netflix MATT PRIGGE

@mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

“THE FORBIDDEN ROOM”

Bill Murray killing himself with a toaster is one of the comedic high points of 1993’s “Groundhog Day.” PROVIDED

It’s not clear how long Bill Murray’s cantankerous weatherman spends living the same day. It could be a few months. Or, as director Harold Ramis suggested, it could be thousands of years. A smooth blend of the crowd-pleasing and the unimaginably dark, it’s a nice movie about a jerk being de-jerked. But its structure is also based on Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ model of the five stages of death. It’s the kind of demon mainstream hit in which the stretch where our hero repeatedly kills himself is arguably the comedic high point. Keep your eyes peeled for the young Michael Shannon, as an excitable newlywed and WWF fanatic.

Guy Maddin’s “The Forbidden Room” was carefully made to look like it’s an oldie. KINO LORBER

Unfailingly goofy Canadian retro-auteur Guy Maddin (“My Winnipeg”) hasn’t made a feature-length film in ages,

which may explain why “The Forbidden Room” simply overflows with goodies. Indeed, this gonzo shape-shifter — which, as per usual with Maddin, looks like it’s been forgotten for decades — contains at least a few dozen stories and about 10,000 jokes. By turns a submarine movie, a spelunking movie, a volcano movie and a lumberjack movie, it may drive you wonderfully crazy if you watch it in a single sit.

“UNFORGIVEN”

Clint Eastwood tends to be seen as a reactionary brute, delivering magnum force with a big gun. But look closely and he’s more evolved, always questioning his yen for violence and his status as a badass icon. To make it loud and clear that he wasn’t a CroMagnon, he made this 1992 Best Picture winner, playing a grizzled ex-outlaw who has to reactivate his dark side for a greater good.

Clint Eastwood showed the dark side of his dark side in 1992’s Best Picture winner “Unforgiven.” WARNER BROS.

If you’re getting excited about dusting off those spring clothes, then Rachel Roy’s “Design Your Life: Creating Success Through Personal Style will speak to you. Roy — whose feminine dresses have appeared on the likes of Michelle Obama and Kim Kardashian — is more concerned with following her style intuition than the latest trends. She gave us four tips for dressing up for

what you are trying to call into your life, says Roy. “There doesn’t have to be any rhyme or reason [to the board]; you don’t have to be a creative person, per se. You just pull out what you’re drawn to.

Find your own trends Instead of hunting down the latest fads, seek out your personal “musthaves — the wardrobe pieces that make you feel confident and most like yourself. For Roy, who

counts Cary Grant among her style icons, it’s all about trench dresses and blazers.

Invest in your frame Growing up, Roy owned one pair of knockoff tennis shoes at a time. The day she bought her first pair of Manolo Blahniks (on sale) was epic, and it taught her to invest in wardrobe stables. “After shoes, for me it would be a handbag or a watch. So again, [wardrobe staples] refers to how are you framing yourself, she says. “They last, and you can have fun with everything else.

B’s with big week ahead after getting roughed up out West The road-tough B’s weren’t themselves during their Western swing. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

Well, the good news for the Bruins (39-26-8) is that they won’t see another California team again this season — unless it is in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final and it’s likely that they would not complain much about that admittedly unexpected development. Boston went 0-for-3

Winding down The Bruins have just nine games remaining in the regular season — with the playoffs starting on April 15.

• The B’s have a pair of tough games this week as they’ll play at the Rangers on Wednesday before returning home to face the Panthers on Thursday night. The Rangers trail only the Capitals in the Metro Division and Florida leads the Atlantic Division.

on its just-completed road trip to the Golden State, ending with a 2-1 loss against the Kings (44-22-5) on Saturday night at Staples Center. The B’s lost, 3-2, against the Sharks (40-25-6) last Tuesday and got blanked by the Ducks (39-22-9), 4-0, on Friday. A pair of one-goal losses versus two of the better teams in the West shows that they made progress, but all told, Boston went 0-6 against the three California clubs after they had all won at TD Garden earlier this season. “You can like your team’s performance in the second and third [period], but at the end of the day, we’re going home empty-handed and that’s not what we came for,” admitted Bruins head coach Claude Julien. “So maybe it was good that we were able to show that we’re capable of playing with these guys if we set our minds to it.” Though they didn’t gain any points in California, the B’s didn’t exactly melt as Zdeno Chara got into a rare

fight (vs. Clayton Stoner) against the Ducks and fellow defensemen Adam McQuaid dropped the gloves with LA’s Dwight King. Boston is now off until Wednesday (8 p.m., NBCSN) when it visits the New York Rangers (40-24-8). Of their nine remaining contests, four are at home (starting with Thursday’s key meeting with the Florida Panthers) and five

are on the road. More importantly for the B’s, seven of the nine tilts are against Eastern Conference foes. After starting their last road trip on top in the Atlantic Division, the Bruins have dropped to third-place behind the Panthers (40-23-9) and Tampa Bay Lightning (41-26-5). Florida is three points ahead of Boston and Tampa Bay is two points ahead of them,

this past week didn’t really show it, the B’s are still one of the best road teams (23-10-3) in the league. The B’s are .500 at home (16-16-5) and their goal-differential is plus19. The Bruins are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games so it is critical that they can get over this winless trip to California quickly in order to reach their bigger goals (playoff spot, home ice, etc.) in 2015-16.

plus each Sunshine State squad has played one fewer game than the Black and Gold. The Bruins-Rangers games are always very competitive and the importance of the BruinsPanthers tilt is obvious. But Boston does get a break this coming Saturday (7, NESN) as it visits Toronto (25-35-11) — the worst team in the NHL. Keep in mind that while
