ISRAELI FIRM HELPING FBI TO OPEN ENCRYPTED IPHONE: REPORT

1

Israel’s Cellebrite, a provider of mobile forensic software, is helping the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation’s attempt to unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino, California shooters, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Wednesday. If Cellebrite succeeds, then the FBI will no longer need the help of Apple Inc, the Israeli daily said, citing unnamed industry sources. Cellebrite officials declined to comment on the matter. Apple is engaged in a legal battle with the U.S. Justice Department over a judge’s order that it write new software to disable passcode protection on the iPhone used by the shooter. REUTERS

UNITED STATES TO PRESS RUSSIA ON SYRIA’S ASSAD

2

Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to press Russian President Vladimir Putin on how Russia sees a future political transition in Syria and the fate of President Bashar al-Assad. With a fragile truce in place in Syria and warring sides attending peace talks in Geneva, Kerry wants to “get down to brass tacks” on the question of Assad’s future, a State Department official said. While the United States want Assad to step aside, Russia says only the Syrian people can decide his fate at the ballot box and has bristled at any talk of regime change. Kerry is holding talks with Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday, in a meeting arranged after the Russian leader’s surprise announcement on March 14 that he was partially withdrawing his forces from Syria. “The Secretary would like to now really hear where President Putin is in his thinking ... on a political transition” in Syria, the official said as Kerry arrived in Moscow. SUPREME COURT FACES 4-4 SPLIT IN OBAMACARE CONTRACEPTION CASE

The Supreme Court on Wednesday headed toward a possible 4-4 split over a legal challenge by Christian nonprofit employers who object to providing workers insurance covering birth control as required by President Barack Obama’s healthcare law. An evenly split ruling, with the court’s four liberals siding with the Obama administration against the four conservative justices, would leave in place lower-court rulings rejecting challenges brought by the Christian organizations that opposed providing contraception coverage for religious reasons. New Yorkers share mixed feelings after Brussels bombings Some say they are “desensitized” to such events. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

For some New Yorkers, the recent bombings in Brussels have added an extra reason to keep an eye out when commuting to and from home, but for some, the attacks just seem like a part of everyday life. A day after the deadly bombings that claimed the lives of over 30 innocent people in Belgium, Metro spoke to commuters on how they feel in the wake of the attacks. Anne Wu said that she hadn’t thought about the attacks since Tuesday but that alone makes her worried that the violence has become such a norm that she has become desensitized to it all. “Honestly I haven’t even though about it since yesterday when it happened, which in itself is kind of scary,” Wu said. “Like, just moving on since this seems to keep happening.”

She added that she doesn’t really know enough of what the city is doing in terms of keeping resident safe, which could mean everything being done is actually making a difference. “Maybe that means it’s working, since it’s not on my mind. That, or I’m now desensitized to all of this, which is so much worse,” Wu said. Nesha S. from Brooklyn, who goes to school in Manhattan, also feels like New Yorkers are used to always feeling like they have to keep an extra eye out on things surrounding them, especially after the Sept. 11 attacks. “I guess because we’re New Yorkers we tend to keep an eye out. We’re not going to let something happen,” she said. “We’re experienced with it.” She added that she does feel safe when commuting because she no-

tices there is a lot of police presence and sites with a lot of people — like the Fulton Center or World Trade Center — are always being watched to prevent anything from happening. “I do feel secure, there’s always a lot of protection,” she said. However, for Angela Morales, who has been living in New York for 16 years and lived only blocks away from the Twin Towers during the Sept. 11 attacks, the recent bombings have made her terrified. “I feel so scared about ISIS,” Morales said. “I want to be home all the time. I feel nervous on the trains.” She said that she is now making sure to avoid largely populated areas such as Times Square or Union Square out of fear that something might happen. Although she

said she sees a lot of police presence, she feels like more can be done because things still seem vulnerable. Morales suggests places have explosive detectors and also dogs that could sniff out any danger that a regular person would not notice. Commuter Paul Alarcon from Brooklyn also agreed that Tuesday’s bombings in Brussels have left people feeling nervous about what could happen next, especially for a city as big as New York. He added that he thanks the NYPD for doing everything they are doing and hopes that it is enough to prevent anything from happening. “With these people you never know,” Alarcon said. “You don’t know if the guy next to you is a friend or someone who wants to hurt you.” On Tuesday, the NYPD said additional counterterrorism resources have been deployed across the city and teams have been deployed to crowded areas and transit sites to “provide police presence and public reassurance as they closely follow the situation overseas.”

Calls for funding to be restored for summer programs for thousands A recent report showed that a majority of the cuts this year will be made in neighborhoods with child poverty rates exceeding the citywide average. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

The possibility of losing summer programming in neighborhoods across the city has New Yorkers raising their voices to see a change — before it is too late. Elected officials joined parents and children on Wednesday afternoon on the steps of City Hall to call on the city to restore funding to summer programs this year. According to officials, the city plans to cut programming this summer for close to 31,000 middle schools students — with a large amount of the cuts being made in communities with the greatest needs. Not only is the programming essential for students’ academic and life achievements, advocates said, it also helps

parents have a place they know their children will be safe while they have to work. “We know how dangerous are our streets, if [the children] don’t have the opportunity to go to the summer program, where are they going to go? In the streets,” said Councilman Mathieu Eugene, chair of the Committee on Youth Services. “For them to become the leaders of tomorrow we have to provide them with the resources and opportunities that they need, like summer programs.” According to a report released by the Citizens Committee for Children and Campaign for Children, the neighborhoods that will most heavily be impacted with the cuts — like Brownsville which faces up to 1,577 cuts —

prevents summer learning loss and also keeps children safe while parents are working to provide for their families. “We’re talking about families that are already vulnerable from the beginning. We know that summer programs for our young people are an opportunity at success, not an opportunity to be a statistic,” said Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson, whose district is seeing a total of 1,246 cuts this summer. “When you invest in children, you invest in our future, you invest in our families and you invest in the fabric of this great city.” The report, called “Cuts to Summer Programs Hit NYC’s Poorest Communities the Hardest,” also mentions a survey conducted of 2,500 parents last year that found 20 percent of the parents would quite their jobs if they lose access to a summer program. A total of 12 percent of the parents would leave the child home alone. Mericia Thomas Reid — a mother of a seventh grader who has been going to the PAL Beacon Community Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn, for two years — said that the programming has given her daughter an oppor-

also have child poverty rates exceeding the citywide average of 29.6 percent. The areas also see some of the lowest academic achievement rates in the city. Summer programs, the report said, are essential especially in these communities because it

tunity to be exposed to things that she might not have been able to provide for her, such as field trips. She added that her daughter absolutely loves the program and asked the mayor to reconsider refunding the program because it is essential to parents, the children and the community as a whole. “It would be a big disadvantage if we lose the summer program because [it] gives the children something to look forward to, somewhere to go every day and it’s safe,” Reid said. “It fills that gap between June and September and the community would be devastated if we lose it.” For 13-year-old Kayla

Charles, who has been part of the University Settlement Beacon in the Lower East side for five years, the possibility of losing the summer programming is devastating. According to Charles, the program has allowed not only herself but other children as well to stay clear from violence and also be provided a more positive road in life. She added that the program gives students a place to go where they know someone will always be there for them. “If I didn’t have beacon I might have been in jail right now, I might have been on the streets,” Charles said after mentioning many of her family members are currently

incarcerated. “I’m going to fight for these kids so they don’t have to go through the things the rest of my family had to go through. They deserve better. It’s not something that we want, it’s something that we need.” For the parents, students and elected officials, this is the second year in a row having to fight for the refunding of the summer programing. Last year, after rallying for the cuts not to be made a total of 34,000 were funded by the city. The mayor’s office said the city funded the 34,000 seats so families and providers were not left hanging after an administrative error resulted in accidental notifications.

NY siblings missing following Brussels attacks

Alexander and Sascha Pinczowski PROVIDED

A brother and sister were on a phone at the Brussels airport talking to their family in New York when the line went dead after an explosion, and they have not been heard from again. Siblings Sascha and Alexander Pinczowski have not communicated with their family since Tuesday’s bombing at the Brussels airport, the New York Post reported, adding that friends and family have now taken to social media to help

find the pair, who were at the airport for their return trip to New York. Karen Van Suijdam, a friend of the Pinczowskis, posted on Facebook about the missing duo, the Daily Mail stated in a related report. “We are still looking for Alexander Pinczowski and his sister Sascha,” Van Suijdam was quoted by the Daily Mail. “‘They are missing in the Brussels airport attack since this

morning. Please contact if you have seen them or know about their whereabouts. Please share!!!” Nine other Americans have reportedly been injured in the Brussels bombings, sources told the Post, including an Air Force lieutenant colonel and his family and three Mormon missionaries, one of whom had been present at the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Inside Look: Award-winning Tudor The Forest Hills Gardens house is part of the first planned garden community in the nation. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

The words Tudor and New York City are not often paired together — but that style home does exist within its limits in a place called Forest Hills Gardens. The Queens enclave was founded in 1909 as the first planned garden community in the United States, according to Forest Hills Gardens Corp., which manages the community’s maintenance and upkeep. As a 2010 New York Times profile of the neighborhood put it: “The sloping, curving streets of the Gardens, an area about 14 blocks long and

8 wide at its widest point, offer a notable contrast to the often confusing avenue-street-and-road grid of Queens. Nor do the differences end there: The neighborhood shuns the borough’s numbered street system as well, preferring pastoral names like Beechknoll Road and Wendover Road, and it has its own road signs, painted a color called Harwichport blue.” This quaint feel, along with the typical Tudor architecture make for some of the most expensive real estate in the borough. The Tudor at 70 Greenway South, currently on the market for $4,250,000, was awarded first prize for excellence in design and civic value in 1929. Described as “architecturally distinctive,” in its listing by Halstead Property, the home has three floors and a basement, with six bedrooms and five bathrooms.

The Tudor style house is a gem hidden in Queen’s Forest Hills Gardens. PROVIDED

BRIEF Mayor de Blasio, Commissioner Bratton spar with Ted Cruz over call to monitor Muslims Mayor de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bratton were engaged in a war of words with Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz after the candidate called for heavier police monitoring in Muslim communities. In the wake of the Brussels bombings, Sen. Cruz said law enforcement needed more em-

powerment to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized,” and he criticized Mayor de Blasio for ending a controversial program called the Demographics Unit that allegedly increased surveillance of Muslim Americans, CBS2 reported. Describing his idea for monitoring of Muslims, Cruz was quoted by CBS2 saying that “you would reinstate the program that Mayor de Blasio cancelled

because political correctness was more important to him than protecting our safety.” Both de Blasio and Bratton rebutted the senator’s criticism, with Commissioner Bratton saying that Cruz’s comments showed why he would never win the presidential election, the New York Daily News reported. “We don’t need a president that doesn’t respect the values that form the foundation of this country,” Bratton was quoted in a

related Politico article. “I just have to say it’s reprehensible. His comments are not about safety and security. It’s demagoguery,” de Blasio was quoted by CBS2. In New York, Cruz has promised to fight Donald Trump to win the Republican primary in his rival’s home state, according to CBS, which added that Trump has said that he supported Cruz’s strategy for monitoring Muslims. Police are seeking four individuals possibly connected to the September shooting death of Cuomo aide Carey Gabay. Around 3:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, Carey Gabay, 43, was struck in the head after multiple shots were fired in front of 1680 Bedford Ave. between Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street in Brooklyn, the NYPD reported. Gabay died from his injuries more than a week later at Kings County Hospital.

Now police have released photos of four individuals possibly involved in the shooting: three black men described as 25 to 30 years old and a black woman believed to be aged 18 to 20. The shooting that killed Gabay took place hours before the West Indian Day Parade, NBC4 New York reported, adding that police believed Gabay was an unintended victim. More than 24 rounds were fired by as many as three guns in the incident. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). BRIEF Nine guards on trial for beating of Rikers inmate Nine correction officers went on trial Wednesday for the brutal beating of an inmate and a subsequent coverup at New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex. Prosecutors in the Bronx have accused 10 guards in the assault of Jahmal Lightfoot on July 11, 2012, who was left with two fractured eye sockets and a broken nose. The former assistant chief for security, Eliseo Perez, and a captain, Gerald Vaughn, ordered five other officers to carry out the attack after Lightfoot stared at Perez dur-

ing a screening for weapons, according to prosecutors. Three other guards helped conceal the crime by filing inaccurate reports stating that Lightfoot attacked first, authorities said. One of the officers claimed he was slashed, and another officer later produced what he falsely claimed was the weapon Lightfoot used, according to prosecutors. The 30-year-old Lightfoot, who is expected to testify at trial, was released from prison in 2014 after serving a sentence for robbery. He has also filed a civil lawsuit against the city and the officers. REUTERS

BRIEF DA: Bronx man who served 20 years for murder to go free A Bronx man who was convicted of murder and spent 20 years in prison will now have his sentence vacated after the district attorney said he did not receive a fair trial. District Attorney Darcel D. Clark on Wednesday planned to vacate Richard Rosario’s conviction for the 1996 murder of Bronx teenager Jorge L. Collazo, II, the DA’s office reported.

“Imprisoned for half his life, Mr. Rosario was convicted at a trial where he had ineffective counsel, and several alibi witnesses were never interviewed by his attorney,” DA Clark said in a statement. “The charges against Mr. Rosario will remain open while we complete the alibi witnesses interviews and reinvestigate the case in order to decide whether to retry Mr. Rosario.” Rosario, convicted in 1998,

has long claimed that he was in Deltona, Florida, at the time of the killing and that he could provide nine witnesses who saw him there, but they were never interviewed, the district attorney stated. “It really is a case study in a wrongful conviction,” Rosario lawyer Glenn Garber of the Exoneration Initiative said to CBS2. “But he hung in there … and finally he’s getting some level of justice.”

Rosario, originally sentenced to 25 years to life, lost a 2004 challenge to his conviction at the state level and has also seen various federal courts uphold the conviction, according to the DA’s statement. “We will continue to investigate the murder of George Collazo, who was 17 years old when he was shot and killed, so that his family might have closure,” District Attorney Clark said. WCBS-TV NEW YORK “AMERICAN HEALTH FRONT” TO FEATURE JULIUS SHULMAN, MD & DALIA S. NAGEL, MD SUNDAY, MARCH 27th, 2016 @ 5:30pm-6:00pm on WCBS-TV. (New York, NY) Dr. Julius Shulman and Dr. Dalia S. Nagel of Eastside Eye Associates (eastsideeyes.com) to appear on the New York/New Jersey edition to discuss recent breakthrough technologies and advancements in cataract diagnosis and cataract surgery. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract (a clouding of the lens in the eye that causes a loss of vision) or will soon need cataract surgery, joining the ranks of the three million Americans who have cataract surgery annually. Almost 800,000 cataract operations will be performed in people under age 65, a testament to our increasingly active lifestyle. Modern cataract surgery, pioneered by Dr. Shulman and Dr. Nagel, now takes on average 20 minutes or less, with the patient often resuming normal activity within hours. Cataract surgery, accompanied by insertion of a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL), is statistically the most successful operation performed on the human body. AMERICAN HEALTH FRONT will take you inside the offices of Drs. Shulman and Nagel’s Eastside Eye Associates where they have examined over 20,000 cataract patients. The program will feature candid interviews with the doctors, and a rare glimpse into the most current instrumentation and successful methods of treating cataract patients. The doctors will show why in most patients, cataract removal will not only give an astounding improvement in vision, but also a chance to be spectacle-free, perhaps for the first time in years. They will guide viewers through the questions they must ask and the choices they must make to have a successful and happy outcome. Most importantly, the doctors will show viewers just how much they will benefit from this incredible procedure.

About the Doctors Julius Shulman, M.D Julius Shulman, M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital. RACE FOR THE Trump, Clinton win big in Ariz., but Cruz, Sanders show fight The win furthered Trump’s argument that he will eventually win the Republican presidential nomination and that the party should rally around him. He won all of Arizona’s 58 delegates. Republican front-runner Donald Trump swept to victory in Arizona on Tuesday but rival Ted Cruz showed some fight with a win in Utah that gave hope to establishment Republicans who fear Trump would lead the party to ruin in the presidential election.

On the Democratic side, favorite Hillary Clinton routed challenger Bernie Sanders in Arizona to stretch her advantage in the race for her party’s presidential nomination. Sanders, however, won contests in Utah and Idaho to bolster his case that he still has a chance despite Clinton’s big lead. The nominating battles in Arizona and Utah, plus the Democratic contest in Idaho, were overshadowed by attacks in Brussels in which at least 30 people were killed and raised security concerns among U.S. voters. Trump helped himself in Arizona with a hardline anti-immigration message and tough talk on Islamic

militants to easily defeat Cruz, a senator from Texas, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Trump had the backing in Arizona of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, one of the most prominent supporters of a crackdown on illegal immigrants. “Much bigger win than anticipated in Arizona. Thank you, I will never forget!” Trump said on Twitter. “Hopefully the Republican Party can come together and have a big WIN in November, paving the way for many great Supreme Court Justices!” Cruz, though, won big in Utah’s caucuses, giving hope to those Republicans who fear Trump’s propos-

Cruz appeared to be on track to win all of Utah’s 40 Republican delegates. Since the state’s 40 delegates are awarded proportionate to the popular vote, he needed to win at least 50 percent of the vote to take all the delegates.

He appeared to benefit from Mormons who dominate the Republican vote in Utah. They did not take kindly to a Trump attack on Church of Latter Day Saints member Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee who has led the anti-Trump opposition. Trump had questioned whether Romney, an elder in the Mormon church, was really a Mormon. “Trump’s poor show-

ing in Utah is a reminder that while many love his glib comments, those remarks can also have a downside. Questioning Mitt Romney’s faith is something that was sure to backfire in Utah,” said David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. Clinton seized on the Brussels attacks to argue that neither Trump nor Cruz can be trusted to lead the fight against Islamic State militants. Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. and Cruz said he would send police patrols into Muslim neighborhoods. Sanders said his Utah and Idaho victories were powered by young people and working-class Americans who support his “political revolution.” “These decisive victories in Idaho and Utah give me confidence that we will continue to win major victories in the coming contests,” he said. The attacks in Brussels came just days after a suspected Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up in Istanbul’s most popular shopping district. One of the attackers in the Brussels suicide bombings was deported last year from Turkey, and Belgium subsequently ignored a warning that the man was a militant, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday. Erdogan’s office identified the man as Ibrahim El Bakraoui, one of the two brothers named by Belgium as responsible for the attacks that killed at least 31 people

in Brussels on Tuesday and were claimed by the Islamic State group. In previous cases, officials have said that without evidence of crime, such as having fought in Syria, they cannot jail people deported from Turkey. Among such cases was Brahim Abdeslam, one of the suicide bombers in Paris in November, who was also sent back to Belgium from Turkey early last year. Erdogan told a news conference that Bakraoui was detained in the southern Turkish province of Gaziantep near the Syrian border and was later deported to the Netherlands. Turkey also notified Dutch authorities, Erdogan said. A Dutch government official said Erdogan’s

comments were “being carefully looked into,” but that they could not yet say if El Bakraoui had been in the Netherlands. “One of the attackers in Brussels is an individual we detained in Gaziantep in June 2015 and deported. We reported the deportation to the Belgian Embassy in Ankara on July 14, 2015, but he was later set free,” Erdogan said. “Belgium ignored our warning that this person is a foreign fighter.” Erdogan’s office confirmed that Bakraoui was deported to the Netherlands. It said he was later released by Belgian authorities as “no links with terrorism” were found. It was not clear when Bakraoui was handed over to Belgian authorities. REUTERS

US to charge Iranians in dam cyberattacks The charges, related to unlawful access to computers and other alleged crimes, were expected to be announced publicly by U.S. officials as soon as this morning, a sources said. The Obama administration is expected to blame Iranian hackers as soon as Thursday for a coordinated campaign of cyberattacks in 2012 and 2013 on a suburban New York City dam and several other targets, sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters. In one of the largest foreign cyberattack cases since 2014 when the United States charged five Chinese military hackers, the U.S. Justice Department has prepared an in-

dictment against about a half-dozen Iranians, said four sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. The indictment was expected to directly link the hacking campaign to the Iranian government, one source said. Though the breach of back-office computer systems at the Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye Brook, New York has been reported, it was only part of a hacking campaign that was broader than

previously known, as the indictment will show, the sources said. In the intrusion of the dam computers, the hackers did not gain operational control of the floodgates, and investigators believe they were attempting to test their capabilities. The dam breach coincided roughly with attacks on U.S. financial institutions. Cybersecurity experts have said these, too, were perpetrated by Iranian hackers against Capital One, PNC Financial Services and SunTrust Bank. Prosecutors were considering including those breaches in the indictment, sources said. The Justice Department declined to comment. The indictment would be the Obama administration’s latest step to confront foreign cyberattacks on the United States. REUTERS

Atlanta’s airport was briefly evacuated Wednesday over a suspicious package while U.S. law enforcement agencies and travelers were on edge a day after deadly suicide bombings by Islamist militants rocked Brussels. Passengers were ordered out of public areas of the domestic terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the United States’ busiest by passenger volume, but the site was quickly cleared and operations resumed, airport officials said. Parts of Denver airport were also evacuated on Tuesday, hours after at least 31 people were killed and 260 wounded in attacks on Brussels airport and a rush-hour metro train, as airports across the United States tightened security. U.S. officials were trying to find Americans missing after the attacks,

BRIEF US House bill targets care of babies born dependent on opioids A bill that aims to protect babies born to mothers who used heroin or other opioids during pregnancy was introduced on Wednesday in the House as part of the government’s response to a Reuters investigation. The bipartisan measure would require federal and state governments to do a better job of monitoring the health and safety of babies born drugdependent. Last week — and also in response to the Reuters investigation — a similar bill moved to the Senate oor and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department pledged reforms. Reuters found that 110 U.S. children who were exposed to opioids while in the womb later died preventable deaths at home — and that thousands more each year do not receive social supports required by a 2003 law. The news agency also found that no more than nine states comply with this law, which calls on hospitals to alert social workers whenever a baby is born dependent on drugs. REUTERS

Amazon says its female workers paid same as men Amazon.com Inc., under pressure from an activist shareholder to disclose its policies on gender pay equality, said on Wednesday its female employees earned as much as their male counterparts, according to a survey it recently conducted. The disclosure came as U.S. companies face criticism on the issue of pay equality, especially in the male-dominated technology sector. The Seattle-based online retailer disclosed the results of its study after pressure from Arjuna Capital, the activist arm of investment firm Baldwin Brothers Inc, which has been pushing it to prepare a report on gender pay equity.

Arjuna withdrew its original proposal after Amazon announced the results of its gender pay study on Wednesday. “We are pleased Amazon is stepping up in response to investor concerns about gender pay equity,” said Natasha Lamb, director of shareholder engagement at Arjuna, calling on Amazon to further report on its policies and goals to close the gender pay gap. Amazon, which estimates that women made up 39 percent of its global workforce and 24 percent of managers as of July, said a review of compensation including both base pay and stock compensation found that women earned 99.9 cents for every dollar that men earned in the same jobs. The survey, which was conducted by an external

labor economist, covered Amazon workers at various levels of the company’s organization in the United States. “There will naturally be slight fluctuations from year to year, but at Amazon we are committed to keeping compensation fair and equitable,” the company said in a statement. The study, which was recently completed, also found that minorities earned 100.1 cents for every dollar that white employees earn in the same jobs. The U.S. securities regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission, said last week that Amazon should allow shareholders to vote on a proposal on gender pay equality put forward by Arjuna, after the company had sought permission to omit the proposal from its proxy statement. Amy Adams is in no rush to get her Oscar The actress tells us about reprising Lois Lane for “Batman v Superman” and not caring about awards. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

With “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” Amy Adams gets her second crack at playing comic book icon Lois Lane, who she first played in 2013’s “Man of Steel.” Apart from getting to see Ben Affleck’s incarnation of the Caped Crusader, the fivetime Oscar-nominated actress, 41, learned a few new things — like the fact that Superman’s stomping grounds of Metropolis and Batman’s Gotham are actually quite close to each other, geographically speaking. I didn’t realize Gotham and Metropolis were so close. Yeah, I didn’t either. I remember [director] Zack [Snyder] trying to explain to me when we were shooting certain scenes, and I’m like, “Where is this?” And he’s like, “It’s here.” So it’s across the parking lot in my world, but on a green screen.

GETTY IMAGES

Have you gotten used to that yet as an

In “Batman v Superman,” Amy Adams once again plays ace reporter and Clark Kent’s crush, Lois Lane. WARNER BROS. PICTURES

wknd THE FUN STARTS HERE actor — the amount of green screen? I feel like I’ve done a lot of green screen now. I just did a film called “Story of Your Life” [the forthcoming film from fashion designer-turneddirector Tom Ford] and I was literally just talking to a green screen for a lot of the movie. I feel like as an actor it’s my job to create a world that doesn’t exist, except in the world that we’re living in and creating. So it’s just another element that you add to it.

It just seems like a skill they didn’t emphasize as much 10 years ago. No, I don’t really think they teach acting to a tennis ball in colleges or universities. They probably should add that to the acting program. I don’t know if you heard, but a recent poll decided that now that Leonardo DiCaprio has an Oscar, you’re the next on the list of actors that people feel are due. Really? Oh gosh. I have a list. I can think of some people [more deserving].

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” Director: Kirk Jones Stars: Nia Vardalos, Michael Constantine Rating: PG-13

•••••

Thank god “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” features even more Andrea Martin (with Nia Vardalos). UNIVERSAL

In 2002 critics and cultural commentators suddenly had to conjure up a reason why a rando indie was making Mel Gibson movie money. (Again, this was 2002.) The ninth-highest-grossing film of the year, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was a movie about a wallflower that was a bit of a wallflower itself — a barely-there comedy fueled by on star-screenwriter

Annette Bening, Glenn Close … but that’s nice, that’s very nice. We could get a campaign started for you. I don’t think about it. I sort of conceded a long time ago that it probably wouldn’t happen, just given the odds. That hasn’t been part of my motivation. I wouldn’t give it back if they gave me one, but I don’t poo-poo the whole idea of it. It’s just if I spent time thinking about it, that seems like something petty to feel sorry for myself about.

Nia Vardalos falling down and too many gags about Windex. And yet the mega-belated sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” is affable enough to make detractors mistrust their memory of the first. Or maybe we’re softening with age, the way some people in their 30s start to like Phil Collins. Or perhaps it is really an improvement, being a rare comedy that doesn’t hold back from exploring the disappointments of middle age and even the love lives of gross old people who get stuck in bathtubs. That’s to say, it has actual reasons to exist. Then again, another reason may be that Vardalos’ frumpyturned-fabulous Toula is no longer the center of attention.

How great would it be if they announced a winner at the Oscars and the person was like, “No, I’m good”? “Uh, yeah, no. That wasn’t really my best work.” Can you imagine? “I think someone else did better work, I think we all know who that person is, I’d like to give it to them.” I don’t think that that’s happened. You could be the first. No, I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t tackle someone to get to the stage, but I’m not gonna … no.

Once again the screenwriter, she turns the movie over to her motley crew of family freaks, who dominate packed group frames like Fellini-esque grotesques, babbling and declaiming, being aggravating and affable in equal measure. The wedding this time is more comical: Turns out Toula’s parents (Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan) were never legally married, meaning there’s more time for them, not attractive 30-somethings and their relatively wan problems. What follows is pleasant. Really any movie with this much screen time for “SCTV” legend Andrea Martin, reprising her role as the fam’s can-do monster, deserves to make all the money. MATT PRIGGE

Allison Williams knows you don’t like Marnie But she hopes she can change your mind. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

The characters on HBO’s “Girls” have always been polarizing, but tightly wound, type A Marnie Michaels might be the easiest target. And Allison Williams knows this. “Marnie always tries to be better and do better, but never wants to get caught being the problem,” says Williams from the Alabama set of her upcoming film “Get Out.” ”I think at her core she is a perfectionist, but she’s far, far less than perfect. Season 5 opened with Marnie fulfilling the bridezilla cliche we knew she would, while a panicked Desi was talked down from bailing by Ray. The relationship unfolds to be as challenging as anyone might expect it to be, but Marnie soldiers on, determined to make it work. This weekend’s episode “The Panic in Central Park” is a special capsule centered on Williams’ character — the details are scarce, but the 27-year-old actress, insightful and charismatic and un-Marnie-like in every way, fills us in on what to expect. We spoke to Alex Karpovsky [Ray] a few weeks ago, and he says that like his character, Marnie is also a true romantic. What do you think? I think he’s probably

right. She has, in many ways, the highest standards and hopes for what love could be. She’s gone back and forth between believing she deserves it or not. It’s so different from the marriage her parents had, but she still feels like great love is possible and she follows her instincts in that direction often. A lot of the decisions she makes are governed by that sense of romance. I think Ray is probably up there somewhere with the rest of them, too. We don’t know much about your capsule episode, so is there anything you can tell us? We get to spend a chunk of time with Marnie and see the result of a fight she gets into with Desi. Richard Shepard directed masterfully, and I was so excited when I found out Lena [Dunham] was thinking about

[a Marnie] capsule episode. It’s such a privilege and it shows so much trust from [Lena]. Just to shoot it was formative and I hope people enjoy watching it, even if Marnie drives them nuts. That’s the sad thing about Marnie — she almost seems purposely unlikable, but she’s also the character that most actively tries to be better. She has an edge to her and a little bit of a bite that I don’t think is intentional. She comes off harshly sometimes and isn’t cautious or artful when she needs to be the most, which I think rubs people the run way. But she’s pretty serious about feeling love for someone who is also serious, even when there are more fun options to have.

Shondaland welcomes its latest addition this week as “The Catch” snags the Thursday 10 p.m. slot on ABC. Along with her team, including her partner and friend, Valerie Anderson, played by Rose Rollins, the plot takes a twist as a vindictive Alice entertains a game of cat-and-mouse with her ex-fiancé and his dubious associates. Rollins discusses her character’s friendship with Alice, the series’ pilot overhaul and the unpredictable season ahead of her. The original pilot of “The Catch” came out last spring, but the show has taken on a different vibe with Allan Heinberg now. It’s almost sleeker, and the stakes feel higher. It’s been such a long time coming since the original pilot and we’re just really excited. The overhaul of the show has been a great thing. There’s a

total different energy and it’s more indicative of “Ocean’s Eleven.” The show plays on some of the deepest fears of single people, who can find themselves in such a vulnerable situation with the person they love. How did you wrap your head around the story line? I immediately related it to something similar that had happened to me in my life. Allan [Heinberg] and I talked about it briefly and it’s a very personal subject. It hit close to home, and I think it’s a subject a lot of people can relate to. It reminds us to be careful of who we let into our lives and who we trust. There’s definitely some tension between Benjamin and Alice, even after they both mess up each other’s lives. Is this still a love story at heart? It’s a full-blown love story, and that’s the best part about this. You root for the good guy, then you root for the bad guy as well. “The Catch” premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC. RACHEL RACZKA

Solitary man no more Argentinean-Swedish singer-songwriter JosĂŠ GonzĂĄlez cheers up

If you go

A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly

Jose Gonzalez with yMusic March 24 at 8 p.m. 2124 Broadway beacontheatre.com

letters@metro.us

As a moody Argentinean kid born in Sweden and raised on records by Joy Division, Nick Drake and Elliot Smith, JosĂŠ GonzĂĄlez didn’t have much chance but to be a quietly insular and quivering singer-songwriter of melancholy words and music. Even when he turned his attention to rock as a teen, it was sad in nature. Intimate, skeletal albums such as 2005’s “Veneerâ€? and 2007’s fleshed-out “In Our Nature,â€? found GonzĂĄlez inward looking, forlorn and angrily navel-gazing. But after spending time in bands like Junip and GĂśteborg String Theory, GonzĂĄlez became more outward looking in his lyrics — cheerier even — for 2015’s “Vestiges & Claws,â€? and presumably, his current tour.

from working as Junip. I went old school. I actually felt more comfortable when I had a song that sounded too simple, even empty. I could truly produce something from that start point — what instruments to add, what additional structure I could give it. Mixing, too. So, yes I felt comfortable with all the production tricks I learned from those situations but still chose still to keep “Vestiges & Claws sketchy and simple — raw, even.

You had a seven-year gap between solo albums that ended with “Vestiges & Claws. What did you learn from being in bands that you brought back to your personal work? When I started working on the new album, I found myself returning often to its demos, even though I had learned a lot

The new album’s vibe is so dierent from what we’re used to lyrically from you, which is usually something more insular. The new album is more outward. It’s definitely a conscious effort to open up. Since my first album, I have been struggling with the monotony of my guitar playing and the emotions

What cheered you up? I am just more comfortable. There are subjects to sing about other than myself and my relationships. I have been trying to do protest and political songs. I like how Rodriguez talks about the working classes or how John Lennon imagines one world. I think about those ideas a lot now, so that comes out.

of my lyrics, often sad and melancholy. Those are first-person narratives. Even when my music was soft, there was aggression and frustration. I have been trying to move from that, so not to be a whining singing-songwriter. I was always looking for more things to sing about — society, humanity. This time those topics with lots of metaphors came out, another sort of narrative. This is, for me, one step further.

Island in the sun Coney Island opens for the season this weekend — here’s what’s new. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

So much for the first day of spring. Last weekend’s random snow flurries canceled Coney Island’s planned opening ceremonies, but they’re making another go of it this Saturday. Among the festivities will be the annual Blessing of the Rides at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, with free spins for the first 96 people (for the 96th anniversary of the wheel) and Luna Park’s traditional egg cream christening at 11:30 a.m. with free rides on the Cyclone for the first 100 attendees. Later this summer, Nathan’s Famous will celebrate 100 years since it began as a humble hot dog stand. Check out what’s new on the seaside.

The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk Who knows with the weather in this city anymore, so an indoor

concert venue is just the ticket for summer fun. The magnificent but decaying Childs Restaurant building is undergoing a massive renovation into a 5,000-seat entertainment venue scheduled to open in July, with acts like Matisyahu and 311 already lined up. Expect free shows as well, and a 40,000-square-foot landscaped open space in case you don’t want to spread out your picnic on the sand.

‘Killing Republicans’ Lower your hackles, this is not some kind of political sideshow with Donald Trump’s head on a dartboard. Coney Island’s unofficial mayor — and Yale School of Drama graduate — Dick Zigun has written a rock opera that muses on why people for centuries have been compelled to shoot at Republican politicians. It’s a thinking man’s satire, as Zigun describes it, but expect punk rock, heavy metal and some real talk, all in the style of The Funhouse Philosophers. The show opens at the Shooting Gallery Arts Annex (1214 Surf Ave.) April 15; tickets are $15.

Luna Park will debut a new ride this summer.

Luna Park Thrillseekers, this is your year. The still-got-it Cyclone is back to dropping and rocking rollercoaster fanatics after a recently completed refurbishment, but there’s an even more intense ride waiting for those who dare. The brand new Endeavour takes a

swing carousel and adds a whole lot of technology — each rider is in his own pod facing the open sky to create the feeling that you’re flying as high as three stories above the ground at 25 miles per hour. The park is weekends-only until Memorial Day, when it opens every day for the summer.

Coney Island Brewing Company The Boardwalk got a brewery back in September, and since then Coney Island Brewing has been turning out the only pilsner worth drinking outside Eastern Europe in addition to helping kick off the hard root beer craze.

For its first summer, it’s putting a “Coney Island twist” on a traditional kolsch with pureed strawberries and its own cotton candy flavoring. Cotton Candy Kolsch will be available starting mid-April and will get an official welcome party at a sweet celebration with Williams Candy on May 28.

If you can’t be at your grandmother’s table, this cozy Italian spot is the next best thing. The four-course menu ($70) ticks all the Easter classics, including spring pea puree-stuffed ravioli, lamb chops with fava beans, and Italy’s own version of tres leches cake: Easter bread soaked in three milks, vanilla mascarpone and strawberries.

This daytime pub crawl is the only egg hunt open to the over-12 set, which is fine by us. On Saturday from 2-5 p.m., meet at 4th Down Bar in Williamsburg, where The Great Egg Hunt gathers before setting off down Grand Street. Keep enough wits about you to find hidden eggs along the way, containing prizes like spa services, movie tickets and distillery tours inside. It’s free with RSVP through the Happy Hour Monster app or $5 at the start of the crawl.

If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

Nothing says Paris like the Luxembourg Gardens. Bordered by Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter, the Jardins du Luxembourg are beloved by Parisians longing to bask on a lawn chair in the sunshine or enjoy an impromptu picnic. Children of all ages race their sailboats in the basin behind the Sénat, romp in the enclosed playground, take in a puppet show and ride the city’s oldest merry-

go-round. A favorite circuit for joggers and amblers, the many paths are also perfect for an afternoon stroll past espaliered orchards and the old apiary, where beekeeping is taught and the honey is sold in the fall. Don’t miss the excellent exhibits at the renowned Musée de Luxembourg.

Bateau Mouche There’s nothing quite like seeing Paris from a boat on the Seine, and there’s no lack of vessels to choose from. See Paris’ graceful bridges up close along with the city’s most famous landmarks on a relaxing twoto four-hour boat ride. The bateaux mouches offer everything from a gourmet meal, a flute of Champagne or just sightseeing with commentary. Another option: The Bateau Bus operates continuously from 10 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. every 20 minutes from eight stops around Paris. For about $17 you can hop on or off all day long, with stops at many of the biggest attractions.

Musée Picasso

This immensely popular museum rose phoenixlike in late 2014, when it finally reopened after an ambitious (and often controversial) five-year makeover that cost an estimated $58 million. Home to the world’s largest public collection of Picasso’s work, it now covers almost 54,000 square feet in two buildings: the regal 17thcentury Hôtel Salé and a sprawling new structure in the back garden that’s dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

The Louvre The most recognized symbol of Paris is the Tour Eiffel, but the ultimate traveler’s prize is the Louvre. This is the world’s greatest art museum — and the largest, with 675,000 square feet of works from almost every civilization on Earth. The three most popular pieces here are, of course, the “Mona Lisa,” the “Venus de Milo” and “Winged Victory.” Beyond these must-sees, your best bet is to focus on whatever

31

interests you the most — and don’t despair about getting lost, as you’re bound to stumble onto something equally memorable.

Notre-Dame Looming above Place du Parvis on the Ile de la Cité, the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame is the symbolic heart of Paris and, for many, of France itself. Napoleon was crowned here, and kings and queens exchanged marriage vows before is altar. There are a few things worth seeing inside the Gothic cathedral, but the real highlights are the exterior details and the unforgettable view of Paris, framed by stone gargoyles, from the top of the south tower. Begun in 1163, completed in 1345, badly damaged during the Revolution and restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, Notre-Dame may not be France’s oldest or largest cathedral, but in beauty and architectural harmony it has few peers.

Giants, Jets still with major needs Both New York football teams still need help in key areas. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

The Giants and Jets have taken different roads this offseason in rebuilding their respective rosters, mainly due to an abundance of salary cap space for one (Big Blue), and a lack of funds and defections for the other (Gang Green). Both franchises will look different when the 2016 season kicks off, with the Giants’ facelift considerably different – especially on the defensive side of the ball. While Giants general manager Jerry Reese cannonballed his way into the free agency pool during the opening week, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan made subtle ripples in replenishing his running back stable by adding Matt Forte and Khiry Robinson to the mix — while also resigning valued dual-threat running back Bilal Powell. Those moves definitely offset the loss of Chris Ivory, who took more money to join the Jacksonville Jaguars. Reese, though, has been able to make bigger splashes because he entered the free agent frenzy with over $56 million to reconstruct his roster —

Andre Johnson is still out there and could be brought in on the cheap. GETTY IMAGES

which allowed him to dole out over $200 million in total salaries on his defense alone. The Giants likely overpaid for a few of those needs, but it was a necessary evil to splurge on a defensive end who’s never made a Pro Bowl (Olivier Vernon), a nose tackle who basically plays two downs (Damon Harrison), and a cornerback who admitted that his effort wasn’t always there during his tenure in St. Louis (Janoris Jenkins). That’s three of the topseven offseason signees

The Future of Foot Surgery has arrived at Downtown Podiatry Services

in regards to guaranteed money, as Vernon will receive $52.5 million guaranteed, Harrison will net $24 million, and Jenkins $28.8 million. And as absurd as those numbers are, the Giants aren’t done spending. Reese is still armed with over $24 million in cap space, and with the blessing of his boss, team owner John Mara, Reese has been encouraged to spend whatever is necessary to get the Giants back in playoff contention. Look for the Giants to still address safety help

opposite Landon Collins, as the remaining bodies only include Craig Dahl, Nat Berhe, Mykkele Thompson, and Cooper Taylor. Linebacker and wide receiver depth will also be addressed — especially the wideouts, with the thought being Rueben Randle has likely played his final game in a Giants uniform and Victor Cruz’s health is the great unknown.

What’s left? The best available names at safety include Dashon

Goldson, William Moore, Reggie Nelson, and Louis Delmas. All could be brought aboard at a reasonable price, and all have good pedigree to help the younger safeties on the roster. Curtis Lofton, Chad Greenway, DeMeco Ryans, and Karlos Dansby all are available veteran help at linebacker, while the unsigned wideouts include Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, Anquan Boldin, Roddy White and Dwayne Bowe. The linebacking unit could use more flexibility, as all the above can

play multiple positions. As for the available wideouts, all are past their primes, but are cost-effective help. Percy Harvin is also a free agent, but Mara has already said he wants “clean players added, meaning no one with major injury histories, as the Giants have been snakebitten in that department. The Jets, though, don’t have the luxury of splurging, even for older talent. Aside from adding the perennial Pro Bowler Forte, Maccagnan’s moves were more understated, and it’ll have to remain that way, as they have roughly $3 million remaining in cap space. But that doesn’t mean the second-year general manage can’t be creative and sign bargainbasement help. Gang Green still needs to figure out what to do with unsigned signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is coming off a career year and seeking franchisequarterback level money. Maccagnan has already acknowledged the two sides are at a stalemate, which means someone is going to have to blink first, or the Jets will have to move on and entrust the quarterbacking role to either Geno Smith or the untested Bryce Petty. Jets fans surely would rather have Fitzpatrick back in that slot, but Maccagnan could definitely find cheap help to bolster the position’s depth.

Alex Rodriguez told ESPN on Wednesday that he will retire from baseball after the 2017 season. The controversial Yankees slugger has 687 career home runs, which currently has him in fourth place all-time behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). To overtake Bonds, A-Rod would have to average 37.5 homers over the next two seasons. He hit 33 homers last season. GETTY IMAGES
