ISRAELI FIRM HELPING FBI TO OPEN ENCRYPTED IPHONE: REPORT
1
Israel’s Cellebrite, a provider of mobile forensic software, is helping the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation’s attempt to unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino, California shooters, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Wednesday. If Cellebrite succeeds, then the FBI will no longer need the help of Apple Inc, the Israeli daily said, citing unnamed industry sources. Cellebrite officials declined to comment on the matter. Apple is engaged in a legal battle with the U.S. Justice Department over a judge’s order that it write new software to disable passcode protection on the iPhone used by the shooter. REUTERS
UNITED STATES TO PRESS RUSSIA ON SYRIA’S ASSAD
2
Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to press Russian President Vladimir Putin on how Russia sees a future political transition in Syria and the fate of President Bashar al-Assad. With a fragile truce in place in Syria and warring sides attending peace talks in Geneva, Kerry wants to “get down to brass tacks” on the question of Assad’s future, a State Department official said. While the United States want Assad to step aside, Russia says only the Syrian people can decide his fate at the ballot box and has bristled at any talk of regime change. Kerry is holding talks with Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday, in a meeting arranged after the Russian leader’s surprise announcement on March 14 that he was partially withdrawing his forces from Syria. “The Secretary would like to now really hear where President Putin is in his thinking ... on a political transition” in Syria, the official said as Kerry arrived in Moscow. SUPREME COURT FACES 4-4 SPLIT IN OBAMACARE CONTRACEPTION CASE
3
The Supreme Court on Wednesday headed toward a possible 4-4 split over a legal challenge by Christian nonprofit employers who object to providing workers insurance covering birth control as required by President Barack Obama’s healthcare law. An evenly split ruling, with the court’s four liberals siding with the Obama administration against the four conservative justices, would leave in place lower-court rulings rejecting challenges brought by the Christian organizations that opposed providing contraception coverage for religious reasons. ‘They’re making it too dramatic’: Philly commuters chime in Hours after deadly terror attack in Brussels on Tuesday, SEPTA police urged riders, “if you see something, say something.” JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Metro spoke to commuters Wednesday in the wake of deadly terror attack in the Belgian capital, and Philadelphians we interviewed said they won’t let the bombings deter them from their everyday obligations. “I still take the subway. People should live their lives as normal,” said Angelina Matos, a mother of three from 3rd and Porter streets in South Philly, who was pushing a stroller at Broad Street and Snyder Avenue Wednesday morning. “They’re making it too dramatic,” she said of news reports that broke Tuesday of heightened security around town. “I don’t think the police in Philadelphia are good, but the bombing in Brussels, that don’t bother me,” she said. On Tuesday, hours after ISIS claimed responsibility for the deadliest assault on the European heartland since the attacks on Paris four months ago, local transit police took
quick action in upping their security forces. SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel said Philadelphians can expect to see police more visible around town and urged people — “if you see something, say something.” Bus, subway and train riders seemed to be of normal volume during rush hours Wednesday. Yvonne Yarborough, an unemployed, elderly woman who lives on Snyder Avenue, was boarding the bus when she said she appreciated the measures both SEPTA and the transit police were taking. “I’m afraid for my grandchildren, too,” she said. “I think the police are doing the right thing. They can do a lot better, but for now, they’re taking a big step — a big, major step.” With the Democratic National Convention
coming in July, law enforcement authorities are more sensitive to targets in Philadelphia. Questions remain if the city’s hosting the convention puts it at any greater risk for an attack than it would be otherwise. Dan Trotter, a resident of 15th Street near Jackson Street in South Philly, said he rode the subway Wednesday and the day before, like he does everyday. “The world is scary everyday, but we have to keep our heads up and try to move on,” he said. “I think that’s what the terrorists want — is for us to be afraid. They strike randomly. It makes us afraid of public places — the places we lead our lives.” Butch Ludwig, a bartender at a downtown restaurant who commutes from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, said, “They’ll up security for two weeks,
and after that, they’ll just let it go again. That’s it. That’s the bottom line. It’s all smoke and mirrors. They’ll forget about it until the next incident.” Karl Schappell, of 19th and Ritner streets in South Philly, lived in London when the Irish Republican Army bombed the city in the 1990s. He said one IRA attack actually blew out the back window of his house in London one time. “But I’ll always use the subway,” he said. “First of all, you can’t be afraid. You can’t live your life in fear. My ex was from Belfast, who grew up during The Troubles. I was there when the Omagh bombing happened in Belfast, so I’m really hyperaware of terrorism and the fact that you just can’t change your life. You can’t. If you allow fear to go into everything you do, you’re not living your life.”

‘My instincts said to run’: Nurse on alleged assault by SEPTA cop A former SEPTA cop on trial for assaulting a nurse inside Suburban Station heard his alleged victim describe the assault in court. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
For several hours on Wednesday afternoon, a Philadelphia jury listened to a nurse testify about allegedly being attacked and handcuffed by a SEPTA cop on Christmas Day 2013 who wanted to stop her from filing a complaint against him. “I don’t trust the police. I trusted police before,” testified Muibat Williamson, 54, a Nigerian immigrant who has worked as
a nurse for 19 years. Former SEPTA police officer Douglas Ioven, 44, is currently on trial charged with assault, false imprisonment, and recklessly endangering another person. Williamson described during her testimony how, after wrapping up at 12-hour overnight shift as a neurology nurse at Albert Einstein Medical Center, she was at Suburban Station to catch an 8:30 a.m. train home to Wilmington when she stopped into Dunkin’ Donuts. Surveillance video shown in court shows Ioven, on-duty and in uniform, standing to the side of the Dunkin’ Donuts cash register, then stepping in front of Williamson to order. “I said, ‘Excuse me, are you in line?’ He didn’t answer. Then I went to order and he cut in front of
me. Because he’s a policeman, I respect the police, I backed up,” she testified. Williamson claimed Ioven stepped on her foot as he left. When she asked him to apologize, he refused, she said. They began to argue, but another woman interceded, saying, “Today is Christmas, let us have a nice day,” Williamson testified. After Ioven left, that same woman urged her to file a report, so she walked over to A SEPTA police office — but again encountered Ioven, who spotted her knocking on the door. “He said ‘If you don’t get the f--- out of that place, I’m gonna put handcuffs on you. I’m not playing around,” she testified. “My instincts said to run. I started running.” Williamson testified that as she fled, Ioven “grabbed the back of my
Ioven PPD
head and smashed it into the MAC [ATM] machine.” Other SEPTA officers quickly arrived and cuffed Williamson. “In that moment, I just want to get out,” she testified. “I said, ‘What did I do wrong that I have to be treated like this?’” Williamson said she was let go with a citation. She filed a complaint with SEPTA police, then went home to her family. “I have two kids I had
to spend Christmas with, but I couldn’t — because I had a headache, I’m tired, I’m crying. I couldn’t sleep because of my headache,” she testified. She went back to work at 7 p.m. that night, where her coworkers noticed the swelling on her head and made her go to the emergency room. Williamson said she experienced headaches for another two weeks after the incident. But Ioven’s lawyer, Joseph Silvestro Jr., argued that Williamson was exaggerating the incident, that Ioven never stepped on her foot, and that Williamson might just want to get money “Do you agree that if you didn’t do anything wrong, you don’t need to apologize?” Silvestro asked on cross-examination, adding that his client “does not feel then or now
that he stepped on your toe.” “Even an accident, you still have to apologize,” Williamson retorted. “What I expect police to be, it’s not like that. I was disappointed.” Silvestro described Williamson’s encounter with his client in the Dunkin’ Donuts line as “was about as minor of an incident as you can have. … It was a one-second touch.” Silvestro also asked Williamson if her objective is to get money from a civil lawsuit she filed against SEPTA, which is currently pending. “My objective is to let him know what he did is wrong,” she replied. Ioven, who was booted from SEPTA police a few months after the incident, declined to comment on the case. Testimony is scheduled to continue on Thursday.
Catholic women seeking right to priesthood to hold annual witness
The protesters SAM NEWHOUSE
On Holy Thursday, a group of women who have been lobbying for the right of their gender to be ordained as Catholic priests will hold a witness outside the Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter and Paul. “Our church now suffers a poverty of spirit brought about by the exclusion of women from full participation in the church,” the Southeastern
Pennsylvania Women’s Ordination Conference (SEPA-WOC) said in a statement announcing the Witness for Women’s Equality in Ministry. “Women are ready, willing and called to offer their gifts and service in an inclusive ministry in a renewed church.” The women will hold their witness across the street from the cathedral at 10:45 a.m. on Holy
Thursday — when all priests in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will accept the oils used in the Holy Week services and throughout the year. Maureen Tate, a member of SEPA-WOC, said the event is scheduled to make themselves visible to the priests. The group, which also believes clergy should have the right to marry, says that women in the
clergy could benefit the church. “Throughout time and the history of our church, women have been the loving face of God to the afflicted,” SEPA-WOC said. The Archdiocese said half of diocesan administrative and professional positions are held by women, and women occupy about 80 percent of lay parish ministers’ roles. SAM NEWHOUSE

BRIEF Pennsylvania budget impasse ends after nine months After a nine-month impasse, Gov. Tom Wolf has relented and said he will not veto a Republican spending package, allowing it to lapse into law on Sunday. Speaking at a news conference Wednesday, Gov. Wolf said that he will not sign the $6.6 billion no-new-taxes package crafted by Republicans, but he also will not veto it, 6ABC reported. That would allow the
package to complete the state’s $30 billion budget. “To allow us to move on from the problems that have plagued 2015-16, I am going to allow this bill to become law,” Wolf was quoted by 6ABC. Facing pressure from Democrats concerned over the possibility of school closures if the state remained without a completed budget, Wolf accepted only half of the boost to public school aid that he was
seeking, an Associated Press article reported by CBS3 stated. “This budget doesn’t work. The math doesn’t work, and that’s a real problem. But we need to keep our commonwealth working,” Wolf was quoted by 6ABC. Lawmakers will now have to come together to negotiate an election-year budget that should take effect by July 1, the AP report at CBS3 added. JASON NUCKOLLS

Third teen arrested in Archbishop Ryan HS shooting All three teen suspects are being charged as adults. MATT LEE @OFF_YELLOW
matthew.lee@metro.us
Police said Wednesday they had arrested a third teen in connection to a nonfatal shooting of another teenager near Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia, 6ABC Philadelphia reported. The teen was identified as Charlie Rolon, 18, of Philadelphia. He faces several charges including criminal conspiracy and aggravated assault. Joshua Sanchez, 19, of Gloucester, New Jersey, and Jonathan Rojas, 16, of Camden, New Jersey, were arrested over the weekend. All three are suspects in the shooting of a 17-yearold Saturday evening behind the high school after a fight broke out, CBS3 Philadelphia reported Sanchez and Rojas
Charlie Rolon PPD
were arrested shortly after the fight on the 3800 block of Elmore Place after patrolling police determined that they matched the description of the suspects. According to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, no Archbishop Ryan students were involved in the events surrounding the shooting, and the school is cooperating with the police investigation. All three suspects, including the 16-year-old Rojas, are being charged as adults.
Toddler swallows crack at day care A toddler was under medical supervision Wednesday after ingesting an unknown amount of crack cocaine at a West Philly day care, Philly. com reported. According to police, the 3-year-old was playing outside at the Works of Learning Early Daycare on Haverford Avenue near 52nd Street Tuesday morning when a supervisor noticed the girl was chewing what turned out to be a bag of crack
cocaine. “The girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she remained Wednesday morning. Authorities said tests showed that the girl did ingest crack cocaine, so medical staff were closely monitoring her,” NBC10 reported. Cops are investigating where the crack cocaine may have come from, and child welfare services are reportedly involved in the matter. MATTHEW LEE

Turkey says Brussels attacker deported in 2015, Belgium ignored warning The attacks in Brussels came just days after a suspected Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up in Istanbul’s most popular shopping district. One of the attackers in the Brussels suicide bombings was deported last year from Turkey, and Belgium subsequently ignored a warning that the man was a militant, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday. Erdogan’s office identified the man as Ibrahim El Bakraoui, one of the two brothers named by Belgium as responsible for the attacks that killed

at least 31 people in Brussels on Tuesday and were claimed by the Islamic State group. In previous cases, officials have said that without evidence of crime, such as having fought in Syria, they cannot jail people deported from Turkey. Among such cases was Brahim Abdeslam, one of the suicide bombers in Paris in November, who
was also sent back to Belgium from Turkey early last year. Erdogan told a news conference that Bakraoui was detained in the southern Turkish province of Gaziantep near the Syrian border and was later deported to the Netherlands. Turkey also notified Dutch authorities, Erdogan said. A Dutch government official said Erdogan’s
comments were “being carefully looked into, but that they could not yet say if El Bakraoui had been in the Netherlands. “One of the attackers in Brussels is an individual we detained in Gaziantep in June 2015 and deported. We reported the deportation to the Belgian Embassy in Ankara on July 14, 2015, but he was later set free, Erdogan said. “Belgium ignored our warning that this person is a foreign fighter. Erdogan’s office confirmed that Bakraoui was deported to the Netherlands. It said he was later released by Belgian authorities as “no links with terrorism were found. It was not clear when Bakraoui was handed over to Belgian authorities.
BRIEF NYC Mayor de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bratton spar with Ted Cruz over call to monitor Muslims Mayor de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bratton were engaged in a war of words with Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz after the candidate called for heavier police monitoring in Muslim communities. In the wake of the Brussels bombings, Sen. Cruz said law enforcement needed more empowerment to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized, and he criticized Mayor de Blasio for ending a controversial program called the Demographics Unit that allegedly increased surveillance of Muslim-Americans, CBS2 reported. Describing his idea for monitoring of Muslims, Cruz was quoted by CBS2 saying that “you would reinstate the program that Mayor de Blasio canceled
because political correctness was more important to him than protecting our safety.â€? Both de Blasio and Bratton rebutted the senator’s criticism, with Commissioner Bratton saying that Cruz’s comments showed why he would never win the presidential election, the New York Daily News reported. “We don’t need a president that doesn’t respect the values that form the foundation of this country,â€? Bratton was quoted in a related Politico article. “I just have to say it’s reprehensible. His comments are not about safety and security. It’s demagoguery,â€? de Blasio was quoted by CBS2. In New York, Cruz has promised to ďŹ ght Donald Trump to win the Republican primary in his rival’s home state, according to CBS, which added that Trump has said that he supported Cruz’s strategy for monitoring Muslims. Atlanta’s airport was briefly evacuated Wednesday over a suspicious package while U.S. law enforcement agencies and travelers were on edge a day after deadly suicide bombings by Islamist militants rocked Brussels. Passengers were ordered out of public areas of the domestic terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the United States’ busiest by passenger volume, but the site was quickly cleared and operations resumed, airport officials said. Parts of Denver airport were also evacuated on Tuesday, hours after at least 31 people were killed and 260 wounded in attacks on Brussels airport and a rush-hour metro train, as airports across the United States tightened security. U.S. officials were trying to find Americans missing after the attacks,

which the officials said injured about a dozen U.S. citizens including three Mormon missionaries, a U.S. Air Force airman and four members of his family. “We are still assessing the impact, U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement. He could not confirm whether any Americans were killed. “We must emphasize that a number of U.S. citizens remain unaccounted for, Toner said. REUTERS
BRIEF US House bill targets care of babies born dependent on opioids A bill that aims to protect babies born to mothers who used heroin or other opioids during pregnancy was introduced on Wednesday in the House as part of the government’s response to a Reuters investigation. The bipartisan measure would require federal and state governments to do a better job of monitoring the health and safety of babies born drugdependent. Last week — and also in response to the Reuters investigation — a similar bill moved to the Senate oor and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department pledged reforms. “We must do everything we can to safeguard the most vulnerable among us,â€? Rep. Lou Barletta, a Pennsylvania Republican, said in a statement on Wednesday. Barletta is the bill’s prime sponsor. Reuters found that 110 U.S. children who were exposed to opioids while in the womb later died preventable deaths at home — and that thousands more each year do not receive social supports required by a 2003 law. The news agency also
“This legislation puts families at the center of care and ensures that babies and mothers affected by substance use disorders get the help they need.â€? Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, the lead Democratic sponsor found that no more than nine states comply with this law, which calls on hospitals to alert social workers whenever a baby is born dependent on drugs. The House bill would require states to report each year the number of infants identiďŹ ed as born drug-dependent, and the number for whom plans of safe care are developed. The bill also calls for the distribution of “best practicesâ€? to social workers developing plans of safe care for the newborns and their caretakers. REUTERS

US to charge Iranians in dam cyberattacks The charges, related to unlawful access to computers and other alleged crimes, were expected to be announced publicly by U.S. officials as soon as this morning, a sources said. The Obama administration is expected to blame Iranian hackers as soon as Thursday for a coordinated campaign of cyberattacks in 2012 and 2013 on a suburban New York City dam and several other targets, sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters. In one of the largest foreign cyberattack cases since 2014 when the United States charged five Chinese military hackers, the U.S. Justice Department has prepared an in-
previously known, as the indictment will show, the sources said. In the intrusion of the dam computers, the hackers did not gain operational control of the floodgates, and investigators believe they were attempting to test their capabilities. The dam breach coincided roughly with attacks on U.S. financial institutions. Cybersecurity experts have said these, too, were perpetrated by Iranian hackers against Capital One, PNC Financial Services and SunTrust Bank. Prosecutors were considering including those breaches in the indictment, sources said. The Justice Department declined to comment. The indictment would be the Obama administration’s latest step to confront foreign cyberattacks on the United States. REUTERS

dictment against about a half-dozen Iranians, said four sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. The indictment was expected to directly link the hacking campaign to the Iranian government, one source said. Though the breach of back-office computer systems at the Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye Brook, New York has been reported, it was only part of a hacking campaign that was broader than

Amazon says its female workers paid same as men Amazon.com Inc., under pressure from an activist shareholder to disclose its policies on gender pay equality, said on Wednesday its female employees earned as much as their male counterparts, according to a survey it recently conducted. The disclosure came as U.S. companies face criticism on the issue of pay equality, especially in the male-dominated technology sector. The Seattle-based online retailer disclosed the results of its study after pressure from Arjuna Capital, the activist arm of investment firm Baldwin Brothers Inc, which has been pushing it to prepare a report on gender pay equity. Arjuna withdrew its original proposal after Amazon announced the results of its gender pay study on Wednesday. “We are pleased

Amazon is stepping up in response to investor concerns about gender pay equity, said Natasha Lamb, director of shareholder engagement at Arjuna, calling on Amazon to further report on its policies and goals to close the gender pay gap. Amazon, which estimates that women made up 39 percent of its global workforce and 24 percent of managers as of July, said a review of compensation including both base pay and stock compensation found that women earned 99.9 cents for every dollar that men earned in the same jobs. Trump, Clinton win big in Ariz., but Cruz, Sanders show fight The win furthered Trump’s argument that he will eventually win the Republican presidential nomination and that the party should rally around him. He won all of Arizona’s 58 delegates. Republican front-runner Donald Trump swept to victory in Arizona on Tuesday but rival Ted Cruz showed some fight with a win in Utah that gave

hope to establishment Republicans who fear Trump would lead the party to ruin in the presidential election. On the Democratic side, favorite Hillary Clinton routed challenger Bernie Sanders in Arizona to stretch her advantage in the race for her party’s presidential nomination. Sanders, however, won contests in Utah and Idaho to bolster his case that he still has a chance despite Clinton’s big lead. The nominating battles in Arizona and Utah, plus the Democratic contest in
Idaho, were overshadowed by attacks in Brussels in which at least 30 people were killed and raised security concerns among U.S. voters. Trump helped himself in Arizona with a hardline anti-immigration message and tough talk on Islamic militants to easily defeat Cruz, a senator from Texas, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Trump had the backing in Arizona of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, one of the most prominent supporters of a crackdown on illegal immigrants.
“Much bigger win than anticipated in Arizona. Thank you, I will never forget! Trump said on Twitter. “Hopefully the Republican Party can come together and have a big WIN in November, paving the way for many great Supreme Court Justices! Cruz, though, won big in Utah’s caucuses, giving hope to those Republicans who fear Trump’s proposal to deport 11 million illegal immigrants and build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico would guarantee a Democratic victory in the Nov. 8 election.

Cruz appeared to be on track to win all of Utah’s 40 Republican delegates. Since the state’s 40 delegates are awarded proportionate to the popular vote, he needed to win at least 50 percent of the vote to take all the delegates. He appeared to benefit from Mormons who dominate the Republican vote in Utah. They did not take kindly to a Trump attack on Church of Latter Day Saints member Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee who has led the anti-Trump opposition. Trump had questioned
whether Romney, an elder in the Mormon church, was really a Mormon. “Trump’s poor showing in Utah is a reminder that while many love his glib comments, those remarks can also have a downside. Questioning Mitt Romney’s faith is something that was sure to backfire in Utah, said David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. Clinton seized on the Brussels attacks to argue that neither Trump nor Cruz can be trusted to lead
the fight against Islamic State militants. Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. and Cruz said he would send police patrols into Muslim neighborhoods. Sanders said his Utah and Idaho victories were powered by young people and working-class Americans who support his “political revolution. “These decisive victories in Idaho and Utah give me confidence that we will continue to win major victories in the coming contests, he said. Amy Adams is in no rush to get her Oscar
wknd
In “Batman v Superman,” Amy Adams once again plays ace reporter and Clark Kent’s crush, Lois Lane. WARNER BROS. PICTURES
THE FUN STARTS HERE The actress tells us about reprising Lois Lane for “Batman v Superman” and not caring about awards. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick
ned.ehrbar@metro.us
With “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” Amy Adams gets her second crack at playing comic book icon Lois Lane, who she first played in 2013’s “Man of Steel.” Apart from getting to see Ben Affleck’s incarnation of the Caped Crusader, the five-time Oscar-nominated actress, 41, learned a few new things — like the fact
that Superman’s stomping grounds of Metropolis and Batman’s Gotham are actually quite close to each other, geographically speaking. I didn’t realize Gotham and Metropolis were so close. Yeah, I didn’t either. I remember [director] Zack [Snyder] trying to explain to me when we were shooting certain scenes, and I’m like, “Where is this?” And he’s like, “It’s here.” So it’s across the parking lot in my world, but on a green screen. Have you gotten used to that yet as an actor — the amount of green screen? I feel like I’ve done a lot
of green screen now. I just did a film called “Story of Your Life” [the forthcoming film from fashion designer-turneddirector Tom Ford] and I was literally just talking to a green screen for a lot of the movie. I feel like as an actor it’s my job to create a world that doesn’t exist, except in the world that we’re living in and creating. So it’s just another element that you add to it. It just seems like a skill they didn’t emphasize as much 10 years ago. No, I don’t really think they teach acting to a tennis ball in colleges or universities. They probably should add that to the acting program.
I don’t know if you heard, but a recent poll decided that now that Leonardo DiCaprio has an Oscar, you’re the next on the list for people to feel it’s due. Really? Oh gosh. I have a list. I can think of some people [more deserving]. Annette Bening, Glenn Close … but that’s nice, that’s very nice. We could get a campaign started for you. I don’t think about it. I sort of conceded a long time ago that it probably wouldn’t happen, just given the odds. That hasn’t been part of my motivation. I wouldn’t give it back if they gave me one, but I don’t poopoo the whole idea of it.
It’s just if I spent time thinking about it, that seems like something petty to feel sorry for myself about. How great would it be if they announced a winner at the Oscars and the person was like, “No, I’m good”? “Uh, yeah, no. That wasn’t really my best work.” Can you imagine? “I think someone else did better work, I think we all know who that person is, I’d like to give it to them.” I don’t think that that’s happened. You could be the first. No, I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t tackle someone to get to the stage, but I’m not gonna … no.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceâ€? Director: Zack Snyder Stars: Ben Aeck, Henry Cavill Rating: PG-13
••••• It was a good idea, anyway: For awhile “Batman v Supermanâ€? seems to be about the ethics of superheroes. Before Ben Aeck’s Bruce Wayne dons a doughy suit and battles Henry Cavill’s aggro Kryptonian, we’re treated to
a continuation of “Man of Steelâ€? that asks whether unregulated vigilantes are bad for society, even when they’re ostensibly on the side of good. In other words, it tries to be like the Christopher Nolan Batman ďŹ lms: weirdly thoughtful and philosophically ambitious for a blockbuster about guys in Spandex. A dour, funereal aair, this isn’t, alas, a serious one. After all, it doesn’t have time. It has too many iconic characters, from Bat and Supe to Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor (so hammy he
resembles a demented kids’ show host) to Lois Lane to the Daily Planet to — what the hell? — Wonder Woman, too. Thought peters out, replaced by pummelling action scenes. This is a deeply frustrating movie, where great promise curdles into badly motivated characters scampering about amidst chaotic destruction and endless smack-a-thons with some slimy colossus. But wait, there’s more. “Batman v Supermanâ€? isn’t only tasked with juggling too many characters across two dierent cities; it’s also forced
to tease future episodes and spin-os. Superhero movies are now like websites with too many pop-up ads, clogging the running time with teases for future ďŹ lms that won’t be fun either. It’s DC Comics trying to get in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe action. But the Marvels, whatever their many faults, tend to spice up the tone, whereas the DCs are one-note dirges that collapse the second you put more than one hero in the same space. This one is so heavy the ground falls through almost from the start. MATT PRIGGE

In 2002 critics and cultural commentators suddenly had to conjure up a reason why a rando indie was making Mel Gibson movie money. (Again, this was 2002.) The ninth highest grossing ďŹ lm of the year, “My Big Fat
Greek Weddingâ€? was a movie about a wallower that was a bit of a wallower itself — a barely-there comedy fueled on star-screenwriter Nia Vardalos falling down and too many gags about Windex. And yet the mega-belated sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2â€? is aable enough to make detractors mistrust their memory of the ďŹ rst. Or maybe we’re softening with age, the way some people in their 30s start to like Phil Collins. Or perhaps it is really an improvement, being a rare
comedy that doesn’t hold back from exploring the disappointments of middle age and even the love lives of gross old people who get stuck in bathtubs. That’s to say, it has actual reasons to exist. Then again, another reason may be that Vardalos’ frumpyturned-fabulous Toula is no longer the center of attention. Once again the screenwriter, she turns the movie over to her motley crew of family freaks, who dominate packed group frames like Felliniesque grotesques, babbling and
declaiming, being aggravating and aable in equal measure. The wedding this time is more comical: Turns out Toula’s parents (Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan) were never legally married, meaning there’s more time for them, not attractive 30-somethings and their relatively wan problems. What follows is pleasant. Really any movie with this much screen time for “SCTVâ€? legend Andrea Martin, reprising her role as the fam’s can-do monster, deserves to make all the money. MP

Allison Williams knows you don’t like Marnie unlikable, but she’s also the character that most actively tries to be better. Of course wanting to improve herself is an admirable human quality and there’s a drive to find the truth about yourself and find the best version of yourself. I think she’s really admirable. She has an edge to her and a little bit of a bite that I don’t think is intentional. She comes off harshly sometimes and isn’t cautious or artful when she needs to be the most, which I think rubs people the run way. But she’s pretty serious about feeling love for someone who is also serious, even when there are more fun options to have.
But she hopes she can change your mind. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
The characters on HBO’s “Girls” have always been polarizing, but tightly wound, type A Marnie Michaels might be the easiest target. And Allison Williams knows this. “Marnie always tries to be better and do better, but never wants to get caught being the problem,” says Williams from the Alabama set of her upcoming film “Get Out.” ”I think at her core she is a perfectionist, but she’s far, far less than perfect. Season 5 opened with Marnie’s wedding to Desi, following a tumultuous — though

ironically harmonious in a musical sense — courtship. Marnie fulfilled the bridezilla cliche we knew she would, while a panicked Desi is talked down from bailing by her unrequited paramour, Ray. The relationship unfolds to be as challenging as anyone might expect it to be, but Marnie soldiers on, determined to
make it work. This weekend’s episode “The Panic in Central Park” is a special capsule centered on Williams’ character — the details are scarce, but the 27-year-old actress, insightful and charismatic and un-Marnie-like in every way, fills us in on what to expect. We spoke to Alex Karpovsky [who plays Ray] a few weeks ago, and he says that like his character, Marnie is also a true romantic. What do you think? First of all — how great is Alex? And I think he’s probably right. She has, in many ways, the highest standards and hopes
for what love could be. She’s gone back and forth between believing she deserves it or not. It’s so different from the marriage her parents have and the things she’s seen, but she still feels like great love is possible and she follows her instincts in that direction often. A lot of the decisions she makes are governed by that sense of romance. I think Ray is probably up there somewhere with the rest of them, too. We don’t know much about your capsule episode, so is there anything you can tell us? We get to spend a chunk
of time with Marnie and see the result of a fight she gets into with Desi. Richard Shepard directed masterfully, and I was so excited when I found out Lena [Dunham] was thinking about [a Marnie] capsule episode. I tried not to get my hopes up because scripts and plans change, but then the script came and there it was. It’s such a privilege and it shows so much trust from [Lena]. Just to shoot it was formative and I hope people enjoy watching it, even if Marnie drives them nuts. That’s the sad thing about Marnie — she almost seems purposely
Eh, I like Marnie. People are starting to come around to her. She’s just trying to do her best at all times, and meet herself and understand herself. When she errs, it’s usually with the truth of intentions, and misbehaves occasionally, which is human. There’s growing sympathy for her and this season will deepen that. Hopefully people getting to spend a whole episode with her will [help them] understand her better. It won’t make her instantly better to everyone but hopefully will create some empathy for her. Marnie’s “Girls” capsule episode “Panic in Central Park” airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on HBO.

Rose Rollins says ‘The Catch’ has ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ vibes Shondaland welcomes its latest addition this week as “The Catchâ€? snags the Thursday 10 p.m. slot on ABC. The Shonda Rhimesproduced series centers on Alice (Mireille Enos), a private investigator who finds herself the victim of a life-shattering con orchestrated by her fiancĂŠ, Benjamin (Peter Krause). Along with her team, including her co-partner and friend, Valerie Anderson, played by Rose Rollins, the plot takes a twist as a vindictive Alice entertains a game of cat-and-mouse with her ex-fiancĂŠ and his dubious associates. Rollins discusses her character’s friendship with Alice, the series’ pilot overhaul and the unpredictable season ahead of her. The original pilot of “The Catchâ€? — by former co-showrunner Jennifer Schuur — came out last spring, but the show has taken on a dierent vibe with Allan Heinberg now. It’s almost sleeker, and the stakes feel higher. It’s been such a long time coming since the original pilot and we’re just really excited. The overhaul of the show has been a great thing. There’s a total different energy and it’s more indicative of “Ocean’s Eleven.â€? Right. I was thinking this was almost like a reverse

heist story line. Yeah, while the original was more of a noir. When we meet Valerie in the pilot, she’s in the process of helping to plan Alice’s wedding. They’re such good friends, but also business partners. So that friendship immediately gets tested when things go wrong and their clients are jeopardized by Alice’s situation. I think [Valerie] is such a strong woman, and she’s so good at what she does, and so is Alice. We’re such good partners that I think you can’t underestimate either of us. I think we’ll be fine. Even though we’re in the world of con artists, it’s the one we work in. The show plays on some of the deepest fears of single people, particularly women, who can ďŹ nd themselves in such a vulnerable situation
with the person they love. How did you wrap your head around the story line? I immediately related it to something similar that had happened to me in my life. Allan [Heinberg] and I talked about it briefly and it’s a very personal subject. It hit close to home, and I think it’s a subject a lot of people can relate to. It reminds us to be careful of who we let into our lives and who we trust. There’s deďŹ nitely some tension between Benjamin and Alice, even after they both mess up each other’s lives. Is this still a love story at heart? It’s a full-blown love story, and that’s the best part about this. You root for the good guy, then you root for the bad guy as well. “The Catchâ€? premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC.

hits such as “Baby’s Got Sauce” and “Cold Beverage.” With their two newest albums and, now, a 2016 tour, “It’s like we were never apart, though, you know,” says Dutton of his trio’s nasty blue hiphop and its deeply worn grooves. “Everything just fell into line and continues to do so; a full realization of the new sound we came up,” he says, point-ing out “Love Savess the Day’s” mix off Cypress Hill backbeats and Elmore James guitar licks. “We found the roots of what we always wanted to do on ‘Sugar’ and just kept pushing that blueprint on ‘Love Saves the Day.’ You push long
WKND enough and you’re going to come up with good old fashioned rock ’n’ roll.” Having guest stars on the new album such as Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, Lucinda Williams, DJ Logic and Citizen Cope helped the rock roll louder and harder. Still, it all comes down to the threesome that started the Sauce. Dutton talks about how the writing process amongst the trio’s membership is better than ever, a feel that’s “natural, organic and easy to hear when the cream rises to the top. We’ve got a built-in critique, where Jim and I write and Jeff is the voice of reason.” The egos and jealousies of being a young band on
the road has dissipated, now that G. Love — still boyishly handsome — is 43 years old.”We’re over each other,” he says with a laugh “You mellow with age, and do this only because you want, because it’s fun. When it’s not fun, we break the bottle and go home.” Home is an interesting point, though. There’s the fact that Dutton — born and raised in Philadelphia — moved to Boston in 1992, only to move back to Philly to get discovered 12 months later. “I sent in our demo and very quickly got a call from somebody at Studio 4 and Ruffhouse Records,” says Dutton, recalling the nowdefunct label, home to the Fugees and Lauryn Hill. g “In 1993, that was like winning the lik lottery. Which I lo did.” did Dutton loves the town he was born and raised in, bor but as of 2015, has returned to living retu in B Boston with his son Aiden, a drummer who occasionally joins his pop and the Sauce crew tour. “Remember, on to

Best Bets for Easter Brunch
Options to make the whole crew happy. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
You could prepare a nice home-cooked Easter brunch. Or you could let the experts handle the omelets as you order another round of holiday mimosas. Here’s where we’re making reservations for the whole family this Sunday.
Cantina Feliz 424 S. Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington, Cantinafeliz.com
With all due respect to the Easter basket, we may have found a worthy rival: Cantina Feliz’s “Brunch Guacamole” line-up. Boasting everything from traditional to bacon-and-egg guac, it’s the only way to start a meal that could, if you play your cards right, include brisket enchiladas. Not only does the
Fort Washington mainstay serve a kid-friendly “Little Amigos” menu — mac-and-cheese tacos anyone? — but they also offer familystyle menus and large-group seating.
La Peg 140 N. Columbus Blvd., Lapegbrasserie.com
La Peg, the FringeArts venue’s gorgeous brasserie hidden at the foot of Old City, is celebrating brunch’s High Holy Day with a $25 prixfixe menu. Highlights include roasted leg of lamb and blueberry muffin beignets, while eggs Benedict and cream chipped beef should satisfy traditionalists.

things to do The Blue Duck is open this Sunday. From their signature duck Benedict with cherry sriracha hollandaise to the Fruity Pebbles French toast, the Easter Bunny himself couldn’t have put together a better brunch spread. Remember to BYO champagne and be sure to make reservations — the secret’s out about this Northeast gem’s duck fat fries smothered in smoked Gouda cheese sauce.

200 South St., Bridgetfoys.com
The Holy Grail of brunch buffets in Philadelphia, XIX has more than earned its reputation as an Easter destination. The Bellevue’s 19th-floor restaurant offers some of the best views of the city, as well as a separate buffet for little ones in that “I only eat beige foods” stage. Enjoy that mimosa, mama — someone else is taking care of the chicken fingers today.
Bridget Foy’s doesn’t just offer front-row seats to the Headhouse Easter Parade — they’re cooking up a pretty impressive brunch, too. Go traditional with glazed spiral ham and scalloped potatoes, or expand your frittata horizons with a lobster-stuffed version dolloped with saffron crème fraiche. Did we mention red velvet donuts? Because there are totally red velvet donuts.
Big fun for little ones: Linvilla Orchards 598 Linvill Road, Media, Linvilla.com Open through Saturday, Linvilla Orchards’ Bunnyland features a hayride to the Easter Bunny’s house, as well as an opportunity to meet the farm’s baby chicks and ducklings. Whiskey lovers unite
The Delaware Valley Fields Foundation makes its debut with the first American Whiskey Convention. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
If you go Delaware Valley Fields Foundation’s American Whiskey Convention Friday, 5:30 p.m. (VIP), 6:30 p.m. (GA) Citizen Bank Park Hall of Fame Club One Citizens Bank Way $50-$150, Americanwhiskeyconvention.com ISTOCK
When the Delaware Valley Fields Foundation (DVFF) hosts its first American Whiskey Convention, this Friday, the recently-formed, nonprofit organization, dedicated to encouraging grain production and farming in the area has a mission beyond just planting seeds and boozing it up. They’re here to teach you about Pennsylvania’s role in U.S. whiskey production. “Nonprofits tend to preach to the choir,” says Laura Fields, Event Organizer for the DVFF. “The wonderful thing about this gathering is that it allows for real outreach and instructional information while doing something fun. I mean, who doesn’t want to talk about and drink whiskey?” Fields calls Pennsyl-
vania the birthplace of American whiskey and reminds the curious that this state was renowned for its rye production. “Whiskey began its rise in America in Pennsylvania in the 17th and 18th Century,” she says. “When the Scots, Irish and Germans settled here, they found that the grain they had intended to grow — barley — didn’t work as our soil was rocky. Rye, however, grew like crazy.” An estimated 700 distilleries and distributors existed in Pennsylvania before Prohibition wiped out whiskey production. “The growing of rye nearly ceased,” says Fields, “and bulk whiskey production shut down here.” When Prohibition ended, states controlled how whiskey was produced and liquor was sold with Pennsylvania being amongst the strictest. The first thing that turned up grain production in Pennsylvania was, in Field’s opinion, the craft beer boom of the ’90s. “People who were making beer found you could translate that knowledge to whiskey distilling,” she says. “It’s
a different art, but a lot of old beer guys are new distillers. You do know that whiskey is what beer wants to be when it grows up.” Beer dudes, that’s got to hurt. With a 2011 state statute allowing distilleries to sell their goods directly to the consumer, Pennsylvania’s whiskey biz was back in the game. While other convention highlights include interactive (meaning, drinking) lectures with Dave Pickerell (the Johnny Appleseed of nu-whiskey) and master distiller Herman Mihalich, as well as displays of manly whiskey accoutrements (handmade shoes, Ashton cigars, bespoke suits, motorcycles), the American Whiskey Convention is about one thing: the magic of good booze. “Whiskey is a beautiful combo of art and science, all come by naturally — just water, grain, yeast and wood,” Fields says. “The same four grains can be manipulated to make thousands of styles of whiskey, just like a musician bends his instrument to make it sing differently with each note.”

The three most popular pieces here are, of course, the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory. Beyond these must-sees, your best bet is to focus on whatever interests you the most — and don’t despair about getting lost, as you’re bound to stumble onto something equally memorable.
drale de Notre-Dame is the symbolic heart of Paris and, for many, of France itself. Napoleon was crowned here, and kings and queens exchanged marriage vows before is altar. There are a few things worth seeing inside the Gothic cathedral, but the real highlights are the exterior details and the unforgettable view of Paris, framed by
stone gargoyles, from the top of the south tower. Begun in 1163, completed in 1345, badly damaged during the Revolution and restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, Notre-Dame may not be France’s oldest or largest cathedral, but in beauty and architectural harmony it has few peers.

Villanova walk-ons have special role Kevin Rafferty, Pat Farrell and Henry Lowe are an integral part to the Wildcats’ success. JON MARKS @MetroPhilly
sports@metro.us
Zero-to-52. That’s Villanova’s motto this season. Everyone on the team — including the three senior walk-ons, Kevin Rafferty, Pat Farrell and Henry Lowe — has a role in their success. “I’m 52. Henry’s zero,” said Rafferty, who spends game day leading the cheers until those moments the game’s secure and the three of them get to finish things off. “We feel part of the team just like everyone else. Everyone’s role is different. Pat, Henry and I have different roles, but we take great pride in doing best we can. “We’re constantly encouraging the younger guys and reminding our
older guys we all hold each other accountable,” added Lowe, who hasn’t scored a single point this season. Rafferty has four. “Playing for one another is a secret for our success.” Their teammates and coach certainly appreciate it. “They help us a lot,” said fellow senior Daniel Ochefu. “They stay on the younger guys and do an amazing job getting us ready for situations like this. The message is the same, but it means more hearing Pat, Henry and Kevin tell us we’ve got to defend and rebound and play harder because they’re watching the game. They’ve seen us do it. “It’s great to have those three voices on the bench.” According to Jay Wright — who’s lauded his senior class, which has recorded a school best 113-27 record, the walk-ons value truly can’t be measured.
Contributions from Wildcats’ players are just as important on the practice court as in a game sometimes, a fact the walk-on seniors know and embrace. GETTY IMAGES
“They were the original bench mob guys,” said Wright, following Sunday’s 87-68 blowout of Iowa that advanced them to tomorrow’s Sweet 16 matchup vs Miami. “They

did that before anybody did it their freshman year, when we stunk. I told them, we need that because we need some fun around here. We need some positivity.

“Then after their freshman year, I said, ‘Guys, we need you to grow up now, and we need you to have an impact on these younger guys,’ and they really did.”
As a result, seniors Ryan Arcidiacono, Ochefu, Rafferty, Farrell and Lowe are two steps away from the Final Four. And no less deserving than all the rest.

The monkey is finally off their backs and the elephant has left the room So now what does Villanova, coming off its best half of NCAA Tournament basketball since their unforgettable 1985 National Championship win vs. Georgetown, do for an encore? Following their 87-68 thrashing of an Iowa team that at one point had been ranked No. 3 in the country Sunday in Brooklyn, the Wildcats took it all in stride. While everyone around them shuddered at the thought they’d come up short and fail to get to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year as a high seed, they simply

time lead against Iowa. “If we defend like we did in the first half and stay solid like that, our offense will eventually come. “Once we set the tone on the defensive end in rebounding, we can go as far as that takes us. It’s been a formula that’s worked all season — even getting the Wildcats’ to the No. 1 spot in the rankings for three weeks. Watch Villanova defend and see how often the opposition has to go deep into the shot clock, frequently having to force poor percentage shots simply to avoid a violation. But against Jim Larranaga’s Hurricanes they know they’ll be facing an experienced, battle-tested team which has endured the rigors of an ACC schedule. “When you get to the Sweet 16 you’re not getting any easy ones, said coach Jay Wright, whose club lost to Larranaga’s George Mason team in

went about their business and dispatched the Hawkeyes as disdainfully as if it Iowa were some pre-season opponent. While players like seniors Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu and high-scoring juniors Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins admitted to a certain sense of relief about finally getting out of the first weekend, they made it a point to say they respect all teams but fear none. They also see no reason why this can’t keep going when they square off Thursday in Louisville against 27-7 Miami, a veteran team built much in their own image. The winner meets the Kansas vs. Maryland winner Saturday with a trip to the Final Four in Houston on the line. “We definitely can go all the way as long as we stick to what we do, said Arcidiacono, after Villanova shot a blistering 61 percent while surging to a commanding 54-29 half-

not satisfied with Sweet 16 South region reset Here’s a quick look at the slate for Thursday in Louisville, where Villanova looks to prevail and advance to the Elite Eight.
• No. 2 Villanova vs. No. 3 Miami, 7:10 p.m., CBS (The Wildcats are 4.5-point favorites) • No. 1. Kansas vs. No. 4 Maryland, approximately 9:40 p.m. om CBS (The Jayhawks are 6.5-point favorites) the opening round of the 2011 Tournament. “They have a lot of redshirt seniors that are tough and smart. They are an intelligent and connected defensive team. Usually, when you play teams that have young guys they can be a little disconnected defensively. They have so many veterans that defensively they’re amazing.” Which should make this a fascinating matchup, as the 31-5 Wildcats take on a Miami team
that blew a 27-6 cushion over Wichita State in its second-round matchup — but lived to tell about it. “They have great experience and length,” said Arcidiacono, who knows each game from now on could be his last. “Angel Rodriguez is a stellar point guard out there. Then they have Sheldon McClellan and Davon Reed on the wings plus their big guys down low. They are well-coached, play defense real well, and can score the ball offensively. “It’s going to be a tough one for us, but we’re looking forward to it.” Yet even having stuffed the monkey in the closet and silenced the doubters, they’ll approach this one the same as the previous 36. “Our thing is we’re not gonna change anything,” said Hart, the Wildcats leading scorer for the season, averaging 15.4 points, who led the way with 19 against Iowa. “Same philosophy. mentals. Before we came out Sunday there was no big speech. No change in game plan. Just focus on what we do.” “It’s something that we have worked on all year,” said Ochefu, who
pronounced his tender ankle — which clearly hampered him during the Big East Tournament — a non-issue. “ Next day, next game. “The most important game is the game against
Miami. “We’re maintaining our business approach.” Will it be business as usual and a Villanova win Thursday and then, just maybe another one Saturday? One thing’s for sure.
So far, no team left in the tournament has looked as impressive as the Wildcats. Like that elephant which has left the room, they want to make this a season to never forget.
