PAYPAL PULLS NC PLAN AFTER TRANSGENDER BATHROOM LAW
1
PayPal Holdings Inc. on Tuesday canceled plans to open a global operations center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and invest $3.6 million in the area after the state passed a controversial law targeting LGBT citizens. The digital payment company’s protest is the first by a major business after North Carolina became the first state last month to enact a measure requiring people to use bathrooms or locker rooms in schools and other public facilities that match the gender on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity. REBELS SHOOT DOWN SECOND SYRIAN JET IN A MONTH
2
Rebels shot down a second Syrian warplane in less than a month on Tuesday and reportedly captured its pilot in an area near Aleppo where heavy fighting has erupted in recent days despite a cessation of hostilities agreement. The Syrian army said the jet was shot down with an anti-aircraft missile — the same type of weapon it says was used to shoot down a warplane in western Syria in March — but rebels accused Damascus of fabricating the claim, saying the plane was downed with anti-aircraft guns. Foreign-backed rebels have long demanded anti-aircraft weapons to fight against devastating aerial raids by Syrian and, since September, Russian forces. But their backers, which include Western and Sunni Muslim regional states, are wary of delivering weapons that could fall into the hands of hardline groups. REUTERS
UNITED FLIGHT ATTENDANT LEAVES PACKED PLANE ON SLIDE
3
A United Airlines flight attendant deployed an emergency evacuation slide on an airplane after it arrived in Houston and used it to exit a plane packed with passengers, an airline official said on Tuesday. “It is our understanding that she deployed it intentionally,” said United Airlines spokesman Charlie Hobart, adding airline officials have been speaking with the flight attendant to see why she deployed the slide in the incident that took place on Monday. In a video shown on Houston TV station KPRC, the flight attendant tosses her bag out of a door behind the cockpit and slides down the slide. She grabs the bag and walks away from the plane, which was at full stop. REUTERS

Patriots fans sue NFL over draft picks lost in ‘Deflategate’ case The suit alleges the league has violated the RICO Act. Seven New England Patriots fans sued the National Football League on Tuesday, asking a judge to reverse a decision by the league to strip the team of a first-round pick in this month’s draft over allegations of underinflated footballs. In a lawsuit filed in Boston federal court, the fans contend that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acted unlawfully when he took away two draft picks as punishment for the “Deflategate” scandal, in which the team was accused of manipulating balls to better meet star quarterback Tom Brady’s tastes in a Jan. 18, 2015 playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Patriots won that game, setting them on the path to Brady’s fourth Super Bowl championship. The draft is a key moment in the NFL’s year, when teams get a shot to pick up college players to strengthen their rosters. The most prized athletes are typically picked in the first rounds of selection. The fans that brought the lawsuit — which alleges the league violated the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, the sort of charge typically levied against mob bosses — are residents of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Florida. Lead plaintiff and Patriots season ticket holder Todd Orsatti, of Bristol, Connecticut,
‘Deflategate’ allegations A 243-page, $2.5 million report on the allegations commissioned by the NFL found that it was “more probable than not” that Brady, now 38, had been “generally aware” that two low-level Patriots employees had conspired to take pressure out of footballs, which can make them easier to grip. Brady and the team have repeatedly denied wrongdoing, contending that staff had not been instructed to inflate balls to less than the standard 12.5 pounds per square inch of pressure mandated by NFL rules.
said in the filing that his 7-year-old daughter was so distraught by the
league’s Deflategate decision that she will no longer come to games with him. Patriots owner Robert Kraft reluctantly accepted the lost draft picks, the second set for the fourth round of the 2017 draft, as well as a $1 million fine. The team successfully challenged the NFL’s effort to suspend Brady from playing in the first four games of the 2015 season. A New York federal court judge blocked that suspension days before the season’s start; the league has since appealed that decision contending that Goodell acted within his rights as league commissioner. An NFL spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. REUTERS

Cosby allowed to delay evidence in Mass. case Comedian Bill Cosby has won the right to delay providing evidence in a lawsuit in Massachusetts, in which he is accused of defaming women with public assertions that they fabricated sexual misconduct allegations against him. In his ruling, the federal judge hearing the case cited a risk Cosby might be forced to
disclose facts prosecutors would use in a separate criminal case against him in Pennsylvania. Cosby, who personified the model American family man in his longrunning hit television series “The Cosby Show, was charged last year in Pennsylvania with sexually assaulting former basketball coach Andrea Constand in 2004.
He also has been sued in civil courts by at least nine women, including seven in the case in Massachusetts. In that civil case, U.S. District Judge Mark Mastroianni concluded in a 13-page ruling that Cosby has a right to delay providing evidence to avoid “incriminating himself in the criminal case by disclosing anything
that may “support a conviction. The decision follows a similar order last week by a California state judge who delayed Cosby’s scheduled deposition and other evidence in a civil lawsuit accusing Cosby of sexually abusing a woman in 1974 when she was 15 years old. In that ruling, which was seen as a prec-
edent in other civil cases against Cosby, the judge also put on hold discovery for the plaintiff, Judy Huth. But the ruling on Monday from Mastroianni took a slightly different approach. The judge, citing the need to move the case forward, required the plaintiffs and third parties to provide evidence when asked by attorneys for Cosby. REUTERS

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE
Trump would try to squeeze Mexico into funding border wall Donald Trump proposed Tuesday forcing Mexico to pay for his planned border wall by threatening to block remittances from illegal immigrants, which he said amounts to “welfare” for poor families in Mexico that their government does not provide. The Republican presidential candidate’s campaign said in a memo that if elected in November, Trump would use a U.S. antiterrorism law to cut off such money transfers unless Mexico made a one-time payment of $5 billion to $10 billion for the wall. Trump’s pledge to build the wall has been a much-touted highlight

of a platform targeting illegal immigration in the United States that has helped make him the front-runner to be the Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 election. It is unclear how much a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile U.S.Mexico border would cost, and Mexico has been adamant it would not pay.
Painful Varicose Veins & Swollen Legs? Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic problem. They are associated with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), both of which claim up to 300,000 lives a year in the United States.
The memo elaborated on an idea Trump floated in August, when he suggested seizing all remittances tied to “illegal wages.” It said that upon taking office a Trump administration would propose a rule mandating companies such as Western Union Co. to require customers to prove they were legally in the United States. If Mexico agreed to fund the wall, Trump would drop the proposed rule, it said. “It’s an easy decision for Mexico,” his campaign said, adding the country receives about $24 billion a year in remittances from Mexicans in the United States. Something happy came out of ‘Game of Thrones’
Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna take it fast Ah, young love. Rob Kardashian popped the question to girlfriend Blac Chyna on Monday night, giving her a massive ring and locking that down after two months of dating, according to TMZ. The bride-to-be’s mom was apparently in town for the event, and all three went out to celebrate — at Ace of Diamonds strip club. Glad they’re keeping things traditional. If you’re wondering how the rest of the family feels about the sudden move, apparently the whole gang — Kris Jenner, along with Rob’s sisters, half-sisters and brothers-in-law — all fled Los Angeles earlier Monday for a “family vacation.” Wait, did he actually wait until there was no one to stop him before asking her to marry him? And, more importantly, why didn’t he get to go on the family vacation? Is Rob the Kevin McAllister of the Kardashian clan? Because I can totally see Kim hitting him with a snide, “You’re what the French call ‘les incompetents.’” Anyway, congrats to the happy couple!
At least one “Game of Thrones” mystery has been solved: Former co-stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie are officially a couple. The pair — who tussled onscreen and shared a steamy night in a cave a couple seasons ago before Leslie’s character took an arrow to the heart — made it official on the red carpet for the Olivier Awards in London, holding hands and laughing and kissing and generally being adorable. Rumors of their hooking up started back in 2012 and have come and gone ever since, but at least there’s some certainty in our “Thrones”-related lives for once. Speaking of which, does this mean Leslie knows whether Jon Snow is really dead or not? Spill it, sister.

It’s turning out to be a great week for “Game of Thrones”-related dating news. This time though, it’s all retrospective, as the Mother of Dragons actress Emilia Clarke finally opens up about dating Seth MacFarlane — a relationship that ended three years ago. Better late than never, right? Clarke tells Glamour magazine that dating in the public eye has its downsides. Who knew? “Well, a con is you have strangers giv-
ing you love-life advice, like, ‘I’m a big fan of the show, and I’m not sure what you’re doing with that guy,’ which I didn’t react well to,” she says. “That happened in New York when Seth and I were together. This guy started to give me advice: ‘Can I get a
selfie? And by the way…’ Unh-unh, bro.” Can’t imagine why not.

Are you one of the overzealous “Breaking Bad” fans who snuck into Aaron Paul’s wedding? Because he’d like a word
with you. “We had these three people crash our wedding,” a bewildered Paul tells James Corden. “We didn’t even know it had happened until we started looking through photos of our wedding and we saw these three strangers.” The interlopers stuck out because they
weren’t dressed for the event’s 1920s Parisian carnival theme. Amateurs. I mean, that’s Wedding Crashers 101. Another sign that the trio might not be the most advanced at this sort of thing? One of them actually tried to grab the bouquet, according to Paul. Who does that? Just score one of the rock candy blue meth centerpieces and be on your way. Sheesh.

“OUT 1”
Once upon a time the, thought of watching a 13-hour French film would have seemed, to the casual filmgoer, a no-go. Now that binge-watching is a thing, not so much. But the late Jacques Rivette’s 1971 epic — trailing a couple dozen characters as they interweave throughout Paris — isn’t the kind of monster you conquer semicasually. It demands full attention and total commitment, even if it is conveniently divided into eight episodes. We do recommend bingeing it, though in two,

Do the kids these days — that is, actual kids — know about “E.T.”? At one point the highest-grossing movie ever, topping even “Star Wars,” Steven Spielberg’s heartbreaker has miraculously never been sequelized, remade or rebooted. Hopefully that doesn’t mean its legacy won’t
live on with generations, especially ones used to CGI, who might not take kindly to the sight of an elaborate puppet lumbering about, sometimes in drag. If you’re a parent, do right by your kid(s). Even if you’re just an adult revisiting it, watching it at home means no one has to see you bawl your eyes out.
No one has ever “sold out” like Spike Lee. The director/ firebrand proved he could play nice with this crackerjack thriller, which finds Denzel Washington’s dashing, whitesuited detective attempting to thwart a bank heist. But it’s still exceedingly, wonderfully Spike. Rather than throw everything at the screen and wildly mixing tones, he organically, even subversively, weaves cutting social commentary into a popcorn movie, all without killing the pace. By now, it’s no secret that “The Real Housewives of New York City is synonymous with drama. The beloved Bravo series returns for Season 8 tonight at 9 p.m. — and you won’t want to miss a minute. Leading up to the premiere, Sonja Morgan and Ramona Singer hosted a party at Beautique. Of course, Singer’s brand of Pinot Grigio was served. “Beautique is my home away from home, Morgan says. The two stars dish on what fans can expect from the latest “RHONY installment.
Pushing buttons After so many seasons, the ladies know how to up the ante. Morgan says, “We all know each other’s buttons to push and we’re out of control with that. But the bonds are strengthened, because we get through it. Singer echoes this idea. “We all are calling everyone out on their bullshit, she says. “I use

What’s changed? “I’ve changed tremendously, Singer says. “One
thing that hasn’t changed is my zest for life. ‌ I think I’m a happier, lighter, warmer person with a lot more patience.â€? This patience enhanced her relationships, particularly with castmate Bethenny Frankel. “Bethenny and I actually have a really great relationship. It’s really evolved,â€? Singer says. “It’s so much different than it was even a couple seasons ago.â€? Still, when asked if she could take back any “RHONYâ€? scene, it’d be their argument from the Season 3 episode “The Ambush.â€? “Bethenny and I are walking across the bridge in Brooklyn and she’s telling me things. “Talking sex When asked what fans can look forward to, Morgan’s response isn’t necessarily what you’d expect. “I want them to see me when I’m with my friends in a loving environment, she says. “Having dinner, talking sex, talking about gas and poop and stuff like that. The fun times, not the fights. But then again, she doesn’t mind some emotion. “And maybe some of those tearful moments where you’ve bonded, like everyone else does in real life.

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE
How to keep your houseplant alive It’s easier than you think. ALLYSON FLORIDIA @allysonfloridia
allyson.floridia@metro.us
All too often, houseplants look great just long enough to make one solid appearance on Instagram. Then they suddenly begin to droop and no matter what you do, you can’t bring them back to life. But fret not — Taylor Johnston, horticulturist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and founder of Gamine Workwear, shares her best tips for keeping your plants happy and thriving.
1
Pick plants based on availability of light
Johnston says different types of plants need different amounts of light. So one way to go about picking a houseplant is to look at how much sun your home gets. She gives cacti as high light options, philodendron as medium light, and Boston fern and Norfolk pine as ones that prefer low light.
2
Changes are gradual
Sometimes it’s hard to tell when you’re plant is growing, which leaves you wondering if your plant is growing at all.
Johnston adds, “Plants move very slowly, so you really have to train your eye and be comfortable not knowing the answer.
3
There’s no checklist of rules
You can go to the Internet, gardeners, family and friends, and everyone’s going to tell you something different about how to take care of your plants. Johnston stresses that “everyone’s environment is different and what works for me and what works for you probably are going to be two different things. That goes for how many days a week we water, how often we’re turning our plants to make sure they’re getting even exposure to light.
4
Withhold water
The one thing everyone knows to do is water your plant. Most people don’t realize overwatering might actually be the problem. So no matter the situation, whether you get little gnats flying out or you see leaves drooping, Johnston advises withholding water and using a sticky trap for the gnats. “A lot of times, a plant displaying symptoms of too much water will look like a plant that has not enough, she adds.
5
Feed your plant
gives a little bit of food every time you water.
Fertilizing is an often forgotten, but important, task. Your plants need food in addition to sunlight and water. Johnston shares that she doesn’t use liquid feed, but if she does, she dilutes it. “No matter what the packaging says, ignore it, cut it in half, Johnston advises. As an alternative, she uses Osmocote, which is a slow-release fertilizer that
6
Play your plant music
Johnston is a firm believer that plants respond to extrasensory things, that they somehow have “ears and playing music benefits their spirits. If you’re looking for some music ideas, she suggests “MoTown, jazz, things that are universally loved by people as some op-
tions. “I think a quick search on Spotify will lead to a couple playlists.
7
Know that you’re going to kill a lot of plants
It’s common to attempt to care for a plant, kill it and give up for fear of killing any more. But raising plants, “is something that re-

In February, the sale of single-family detached homes improved for the ninth consecutive month, increasing 10.3 percent on the February 2015 total of 535 homes sold up to 590 sold. This is the highest total of closed home sales in Greater Boston since the 665 homes sold in 2007, according to data released by the Greater Boston Association of Realtors (GBAR). “The combination of low mortgage rates, rising home values and lack of snow this winter have led to above normal demand over the first few months of the year, says GBAR President Andrew Sarno, broker associate with RE/MAX Andrew Realty Services in Medford. “As busy as we’ve been so far this year, sales could have been even stronger had there been a larger inventory of homes to sell. In the 64 communities surrounding Boston that GBAR analyzed,

single family median sale prices rose from $470,000 in 2015 to $520,000 last month, which is a 10.6 percent increase. But it’s important to note that the rest of the state hasn’t had the same luck as the communities within the GBAR jurisdiction. The median price of closed home sales throughout the entire state for the month of February was $309,000, a 4 percent decrease from this time last year when the median was $316,000, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors. 2015’s housing market in Greater Boston was significantly affected by the constant
onslaught of snow. But with 2016’s mild winter temps, realtors are expecting the spring and early summer sales market to move at rapid speed. New listings already skyrocketed last month, with 1,129 new listings of single-family homes within GBAR’s jurisdiction, a 75.3 percent increase from the 644 homes listed at that time in February 2015. “Those looking to sell their homes should take advantage of this opportunity as we approach the spring and early summer market when activity is at its peak and buyers are likely to have more options, Sarno adds.

Sox stars shine in Opening Day win The Red Sox looked mighty strong in their 2016 season debut. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Red Sox have caught a ton of flak in recent years for obtaining bigname players who don’t live up to the hype, and their contract. But on Opening Day of the 2016 season at least, the Sox were led by their superstars. The star system paid off in the form of Tuesday’s 6-2 victory over the Indians in Cleveland. Starting pitcher David Price turned in an electric debut for the Sox, striking out 10 while showing the type of energized velocity that hasn’t been seen out of a Boston pitcher since Pedro Martinez. Price worked six innings, threw 103 pitches and allowed just five hits and two earned runs. He walked just two. While Price looked like a Cy Young contender, Mookie Betts gave some legitimacy to his MVP buzz. Betts delivered the first runs of the
Red Sox’s season, bashing a home run to left center off of Cleveland starter Corey Kluber (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER). The Red Sox’s oldest star also came through on Day 1 of 162, as David Ortiz smashed a two-run home run to right in the top of the ninth to cement the Boston win. Betts, Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez, Travis Shaw and Brock Holt all had a pair of hits on the afternoon. In addition to the strong offensive display and the promising outing by Price, the Red Sox’ bullpen lived up to its spring training billing as well. Junichi Tazawa worked a perfect seventh, Koji Uehara worked a perfect eighth and new closer Craig Kimbrel struck out two in the ninth — walking one but not allowing a hit or a run — in a clean Sox win. The Sox and Indians will get right back to it today (6 p.m., NESN) in Cleveland as Clay Buchholz (7-7, 3.26 ERA in 2015) will take the ball for the Sox and Carlos Carrasco (14-12, 3.63 ERA in 2015) will get the start for Terry Francona’s group.
