FBI SAYS UNLOCKING METHOD WON’T WORK ON NEWER IPHONES

1

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s secret method for unlocking the iPhone 5c used by one of the San Bernardino shooters will not work on newer models, FBI Director James Comey said. “We have a tool that works on a narrow slice of phones,” Comey said at a conference on encryption and surveillance at Kenyon University in Ohio. Apple’s shares were down 1.3 percent at midday. Comey added that the technique would not work on the iPhone 5s and the later models iPhone 6 and 6s. The iPhone 5c model was introduced in 2013 and has since been discontinued by Apple. REUTERS

US SENATORS VOTE TO BOLSTER TRAVEL SECURITY IN FAA BILL

2

The Senate voted to bolster travel security in the wake of the Brussels attacks with measures that include doubling the number of transportation security teams with bomb-sniffing dogs at domestic airports and other transit hubs. Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to add security measures to a separate bill that calls for renewing the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration through September 2017. The FAA bill is expected to come up for a final vote later this month. After Republicans and Democrats reached a deal on security measures earlier in the day, lawmakers voted to raise the number of Visible Intermodal Prevention Response, or VIPER, teams within the Transportation Security Administration from 31 to 60. CHARLIE SHEEN UNDER INVESTIGATION BY LAPD ‘THREAT’ DETECTIVES

3

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s “threat management” squad have opened a criminal investigation of actor Charlie Sheen, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. Police disclosed little else about the investigation, which the LAPD spokesman, officer Mike Lopez, said began with a complaint lodged against the actor on March 31. Lopez declined to provide any information about the nature of the alleged victim or threat, but said investigators had obtained a search warrant in the case, and that as of Wednesday afternoon had yet to contact Sheen. Unconfirmed reports from media outlets, including Variety and RadarOnline.com, referred to an audio tape they said was at the center of the investigation. A lawyer for Sheen could not immediately be reached for comment. REUTERS

Callegari, the app and a company moving truck PROVIDED

Is moving a misery? There’s an app for that Users can choose when and where they need to move their entire apartment or just select items, while also tracking movers via their smartphones. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

With National Moving Month just around the corner, the thought of moving may be less nightmarish for New Yorkers thanks to an app that aims to inject fun into the once-laborious task. Zootly is intended to give users control of when and where they want help moving, with the assistance of certified and licensed movers. And you don’t have to be moving your entire apartment: Users can schedule help to move only select items. “We wanted to create a new name for a new way you do an old task,” said Rudy Callegari, Zootly co-founder and president. “As we’re looking at changing a task that most people thought was very laborious and not fun, we want to put

a little fun into that.” According to data from the American Moving & Storage Association, 11.7 percent, or 35.9 million, of Americans move each year. Of those, 83.8 percent move within the same state, while 13.2 percent move to a different state. The idea for Zootly came to Callegari when he had to move a couch but couldn’t find a trusted and reliable moving service. He felt technology at the time had not touched the moving industry, and saw an opportunity to solve the problem. Through Zootly, residents and businesses can schedule a move — either same day or in advance — by selecting a time that works best for them. Users must give at least a three hours’ notice before the pickup. “With Zootly, it’s on your schedule,” Callegari said. “It puts the control in your hands.” Once the move is scheduled, users select the type of move — for example a studio, oneto three-bedroom or a custom order — and get a cost estimate. Then when all items are picked up, users can track the movers in real time from their smart-

phones. “You know where the truck is, you know where your belongings are,” he said. “It makes it very simple and very transparent.” Along with helping people move to a different home, or move a large couch to a new location, Zootly also offers shipping for businesses, such as caterers, that do not have their own trucks or delivery crews. “When they need it, they pay for it,” he said. “We’ve taken the burden away from them on things that don’t reflect their core business.” Since launching, Zootly has hooked up with

about 49 moving partners. The company also makes sure to handle the hassle of insurance and other paperwork that comes with making a move. “People are loving it because they are looking at us as a place that has done the heavy lifting for them,” Callegari said. Zootly provides service to anyone within a 100-mile radius of Manhattan via the mobile or desktop app, but it plans to expand across the country and into Canada. Callegari added that the company thrives on feedback. Hearing from customers is crucial to ensuring the experience of moving is made easier, and making improvements when they are needed. “What I couldn’t do for myself I am working very hard to make it easier for others,” he said. “We’ve made moving a little bit more fun.”

NYPD PROBE High-ranking NYPD officers transferred as FBI continues corruption probe Four officers have been transferred, and two of those placed on modified duty, as the FBI investigates suspected corruption within the NYPD. Police Commissioner William Bratton said in statement that, after a meeting with the FBI’s Assistant Director Diego Rodriguez, the department has transferred and modified Deputy Chief Michael Harrington and Deputy Inspector James Grant. The decision came as a result of an ongoing joint investigation between the NYPD, FBI and Department of Justice. Deputy Chief David Colon and Deputy Chief Eric Rodriguez were also transferred as a result of the investigation, according to the statement from Bratton’s office. “This is not a particularly good day for the department,” Bratton said at a press conference, according to the New York Post, which also quoted an NYPD source as saying, “I’m disappointed.

It’s a distraction and it takes away from all the good work that we’ve done.” Grant allegedly accepted diamonds and cash from Jeremy Reichberg, a businessman involved in a federal probe into whether NYPD officers took gifts in exchange for favors, the Post added. That probe has also uncovered allegations that police department officials received Super Bowl tickets and vacations, Newsday reported in a related article. Bratton’s statement indicated that potential violations being investigated include infractions against NYPD policies, New York City conflict-of-interest rules and federal criminal laws. Murder charges for teen in beating death Ta’jae Warner, 17, died as a result of the injuries she sustained from a brutal beating in Coney Island. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Authorities have charged a Brownsville teen with attempted murder in connection to the brutal beating of a Coney Island teen last week. Sabrina Agard-Forde, 18, was arrested for her role in the assault on 17-year-old Ta’jae Warner, according to police — and although she was initially charged with felony and misdemeanor assault, charges were increased to attempted murder and assault.

Ta’jae Warner FACEBOOK

On April 1 at about 11:20 p.m. police found Warner unconscious and unresponsive lying on the street with bruising

on her face, authorities said. A preliminary investigation shows that the 17-year-old had allegedly been struck on the face by Agard-Forde causing her to hit her head on the pavement and lose consciousness. Warner was taken to NYU Hospital where, on April 3, she died, according to police. According to the New York Daily News, Warner had been heading to the store with her 11-year-old brother when a group of four attackers — two boys and two girls — began to bother the young boy. Warner then defended her younger brother and the group then made a comment before assaulting her. Warner was declared brain dead at the hospital as a result of injuries sustained that night and

her family decided to remove her from life support. The family has started a GoFundMe campaign in order to fund the teen’s funeral, medical expenses and to help family members attend funeral services. As of Thursday morning, the campaign garnered over $5,000. The three other suspects involved in the incident are still being sought. According to PIX11 New York, during a gathering at a makeshift memorial at the young girl’s apartment building, her father, Arthur Warner, called on the other suspects to give themselves up. “The one that [the police] do have in custody will sing,” he reportedly said. “She’s going to sing her tune.”

New York City sued by students, parents over school violence Nearly a dozen students and their parents have filed a class-action lawsuit against New York City claiming public schools are so dangerous that it has deprived them of their constitutional right to an education. The federal complaint, filed in Brooklyn on Wednesday against the U.S. Department of Education, asserted that the “staggering” level of violence in city schools disproportionately affected minority students. “The violence knows few boundaries, except that, on average, white and Asian students encounter far fewer incidents of school violence than black and Hispanic students,” the lawsuit

said. It also claimed that younger students, disabled students and gay, lesbian and transgender students are targeted more frequently for abuse. The children who are plaintiffs in the case suffered bullying or attacks by other students and

in some cases by their teachers, the lawsuit said. The parents and their children, who were not identified by name, accused the education department of failing to enforce regulations aimed at addressing violence between students or between teachers and students. Students who report such incidents often experience retaliation from their schools, the lawsuit said. In a statement, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he shared the concerns of all students and parents about safety in New York City schools but maintained that conditions have improved in recent years. “I was a public school parent as recently as

last June, and we never want to see a weapon in schools. I view each incidents as obviously troubling. However, when we look at the facts, school safety is doing a very good job continuing a trend that started in the last administration and continues.”

Major crime in schools is down more than 14 percent in 2016, and other crimes have been reduced by nearly 7 percent, he said. The lawsuit seeks to mandate new anti-bullying and anti-violence regulations and to force the education depart-

ment to enforce policies already on the books. A spokesman for the city’s law department said it was reviewing the complaint. The plaintiffs also include Families for Excellent Schools, a procharter school organization. REUTERS

Clinton struggles with MetroCard Clinton reportedly needed to swipe her MetroCard a whopping five times at the 161st Street station near Yankee Stadium. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Politicians — they’re just like us! Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton proved that sentiment Thursday morning when she struggled to successfully swipe a New York City MetroCard at a subway turnstile. Clinton needed to swipe her MetroCard a whopping five times at the 161st Street station near Yankee Stadium before making it into the subway system, New York

Magazine reported. Afterwards, Clinton reportedly caught an uptown 4 train and rode it two stops to 170th street. The incident, which was caught by the media, as well as Clinton’s subway journey, set Twitter ablaze. “Oddest moment of my day: Hillary Clinton urging me to move into the subway car to let more people on,” @danmericaCNN tweeted. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined Clinton Thursday morning, when she reportedly told the media that she’s “so proud to have represented this state.” “New York values, the people of New York, there is no place like it in the world, and I’m going to take those experiences, take those values to the White House,“ she said.

Suspect in Queens, Brooklyn robbery spree sought by cops Authorities are searching for a man they say is responsible for a string of robberies across New York City. Police believe that August Watkins, 30, has committed 16 robberies in Queens and Brooklyn, primarily targeting businesses such as minimarts, fast food eateries, gas stations and drug stores, among others. The first in the series of robberies occurred around 6:40 a.m. on March 26, at the N & K Smart Mart at 79-23 Northern Blvd. and was followed by a pattern of daily robberies, sometimes several per day, in which the suspect allegedly hit small businesses in Queens and Brooklyn,

police reported. In all, the alleged robber has stolen more than $13,000 and $91 worth of cigarettes, according to CBS2. The most recent crime was on Tuesday, April 5, in Sunnyside, Queens, when the suspect robbed a Subway restaurant at 43-19 Queens Blvd., police stated. In each robbery, the suspect simulates a firearm before taking cash from the register, according to police, who added that there have been no reported injuries in the crime spree. SLASHING Police: Man slashed in head, ear while sitting inside parked Lexus in the Bronx The NYPD is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man they say is wanted for allegedly slashing a victim on Wednesday afternoon as he was sitting inside his car in the Bronx. On April 6 at about 4:43 p.m. the suspect — described as a Hispanic man — approached the 28-year-old victim as he was seated inside a 1999 Lexus parked in front of 1975 Lafontaine Ave., according to police. The suspect then slashed the victim in the head and ear and ran away from the scene, cops said. The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital to be treated for the injuries. Teen girl stabs boy on Brooklyn C train The NYPD has released photos of a subway rider who they said stabbed a young boy on a Brooklyn train on Wednesday night after the two got into a verbal dispute. On April 6 at about 6 p.m. the 13-year-old victim was onboard a Manhattan-bound C train approaching the Ralph Avenue station when he got into a verbal argument with the suspect, according to police. As the doors of the train car opened at the Brooklyn station, the suspect — described to be between 14 and 16 years old — took out a knife from her bag and stabbed the young boy once in his abdomen, cops said. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and took the victim to a local hospital. He was listed in stable condition. QUEENS Man, 45, killed in Astoria hit-and-run A Wednesday night hit-and-run in Queens has left one victim dead and authorities investigating surveillance footage for a vehicle that fled the scene. The victim, a 45-year-old man, was struck around 11 p.m. near the corner of 21st Street and 30th Road in Astoria, the New York Daily News reported. A red Toyota that sped away is believed to be the car that hit him. Authorities found the man in the road with severe injuries and he later died at Elmhurst Hospital. “Sometimes cars come flying down here,” resident Pat Quigley was quoted in the CBS2 report. “People have been trying to get a traffic light over here.” Pieces from a car and a shoe were found close to the scene of the crash, according to the Daily News, which added that investigators were still looking for surveillance footage of the incident. “There’s a Boys and Girls Club [on the corner] and kids run onto the street and get hit,” Quigley was quoted by the Daily News. “I remember a kid getting hit here, like, 10 years ago.” There is no crosswalk where the hit-and-run took place. BRIEF Bill Clinton confronts protesters who say his crime reforms hurt blacks Former President Bill Clinton faced down protesters angry at the impact his crime reforms of 20 years ago have had on black Americans and defended the record of Hillary Clinton, his wife, who is relying on the support of black voters in her quest for the presidency. The former president spent more than 10 minutes confront-

ing the protesters at a campaign rally in Philadelphia for his wife on Thursday over criticisms that a 1994 crime bill he approved while president led to a surge in the imprisonment of black people. The Democratic race for the Nov. 8 election has become increasingly heated as Hillary Clinton, stung by a string of losses in state contests, has traded barbs with her rival for the party’s nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders,

over who is better prepared for the White House. In Philadelphia, several protesters heckled the former president mid-speech and held up signs, including one that read “Clinton Crime Bill Destroyed Our Communities.” Video footage of Hillary Clinton defending the reforms in 1994 has been widely circulated during the campaign by activists in the Black Lives Matter protest movement. In the footage she

calls young people in gangs “super-predators” who need to “be brought to heel.” Hillary Clinton, 68, who also has faced protesters upset by her remarks, in February said she regretted her language. Bill Clinton, 69, who was president from 1993-2001, on Thursday defended her 1994 remarks, which protesters say were racially insensitive, and suggested the protesters’ anger was misplaced. REUTERS

US military christens new self-piloting ship

The “Sea Hunter” DEFENSE ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY (DARPA)

The U.S. military Thursday christened an experimental self-piloting ship designed to hunt for enemy submarines, a major advance in robotic warfare at the core of America’s strategy to counter Chinese and Russian naval investments. The 132-foot-long unarmed prototype, dubbed Sea Hunter, is the naval equivalent of Google’s self-driving car, designed to cruise on the ocean’s surface for two or three months at a time — without a crew or anyone controlling it remotely. That kind of endurance and autonomy could make it a highly efficient submarine stalker at a fraction of the cost of the Navy’s manned vessels. “This is an inflection point,” Deputy U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Work said in an interview, adding he hoped such ships might find a place in the western Pacific in as few as five years. “This is the first time we’ve ever had a totally robotic, transoceanic-capable ship.” For Pentagon planners such as Work, the Sea Hunter fits into a strategy to incorporate unmanned drones — with increasing autonomy — into the conventional military in the air, on land and at sea. It also comes as China’s naval investments, including in its expanding submarine fleet, stoke concern in Washington about the vulnerability of the aircraft carrier battle groups and submarines

that remain critical to America’s military superiority in the western Pacific. “We’re not working on anti-submarine [technology] just because we think it’s cool. We’re working on it because we’re deeply concerned about the advancements that China and Russia are making in this space,” said author Peter Singer, an expert on robotic warfare at the New America Foundation think tank. Work said he hoped the ship, once it is proven safe, could head to the U.S. Navy’s Japan-based 7th Fleet to continue testing. His goal is to have ships like the Sea Hunter operating on a range of missions, possibly even including counter-mine warfare operations. “I would like to see unmanned flotillas operating in the western Pacific and the Persian Gulf within five years,” he said. “I would like to see unmanned flotillas operating in the western Pacific and the Persian Gulf within five years,” he said, comparing the prototype ship to early drone aircraft. The ship’s projected $20 million price tag and its $15,000 to $20,000 daily operating cost make it relatively inexpensive for the U.S. military. “You now have an asset at a fraction of the cost of a manned platform,” said Rear Admiral Robert Girrier, the Navy’s director of unmanned warfare systems. US orders Amtrak to conduct safety review after accident A Georgia-bound Amtrak train struck a backhoe on the tracks, killing the backhoe operator and another Amtrak construction worker on foot and sending 35 people to hospital. The U.S. Federal Railroad Administration on Thursday ordered Amtrak to conduct a safety review after Sunday’s passenger train accident near Philadelphia that killed two people. and injured 43. The railroad administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. In the meantime, the administration directed Amtrak to conduct a “safety stand down” for track maintenance workers, which it described as a comprehensive review of all safety rules with employees. Amtrak said it was

working with the safety board to identify the cause of the accident and vowed to make changes if needed. “Amtrak has strict protocols that crews must follow when tracks are taken out of service for maintenance or when work is being performed along the right-of-way,” spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said in a statement. RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE

Sanders and Clinton trade barbs over who’s qualified to be president Bernie Sanders doubled down on Thursday on his assertion that his rival for the Democratic Party’s nomination, Hillary Clinton, is unqualified to be president as the two campaigns became testy two weeks before New York’s election contest. Clinton, stung by a string of losses, this week sharply questioned Sanders’ credentials and ability to carry out a campaign pledge to break up the big banks. Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, told reporters in Philadelphia that Clinton had come after him in a “really uncalled-for way” and again questioned the Democratic frontrunner’s own fitness for the Oval Office. “Are you qualified to be president of the United States when you’re raising millions of dollars from Wall

seem like furious family members at a hill wedding gone wrong. They are united only by their opposition to all things Republican, and that may not be enough. The feud is bitter, bruising and it won’t easily end. And what about the GOP? Members of their old guard are gulping heart medicine like M&M’s as Donald Trump rumbles through their garden party — turning over the tables at their primaries, throwing chairs into the pool and making the Blue Hairs faint dead away. The alternative, Ted Cruz, is like the neighbor they hate but have to call because the police haven’t shown up yet.

VOTING WITH A VENGEANCE Here’s what we learned from the Wisconsin primary: Cheesehead hats are still funny. Packers fans don’t just go along to get along, and we are trudging deeply into the wasteland of the Plurality President — a place where the hopes of voters go to die while the major political parties cheer. What do I mean? There is growing evidence that whoever takes the White House in November will face a country so divided, that he or she will know the vast majority of voters really wanted someone else. The victor will have the most votes, true, but only because mathematically someone has to. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton’s supporters have grown positively venomous toward Bernie Sanders’ camp and vice versa. Early on, both teams talked about pulling together after the primary, but now they

Each camp among these front-runners, profoundly dislikes and distrusts all the others. (John Kasich? Yeah, he’s just hanging around hoping somehow they’ll all go away and leave him in charge.) So pick your poison. Put Clinton, Trump, Sanders or Cruz into the Oval Office and you have given the job to someone only a quarter of the country actively supports — and three-quarters potentially consider illegitimate. And what do you think any of them can get done in an environment like that? This is the choice the two parties have given us, despite all that frothy talk about wanting an end to partisanship, and to usher in a new age of cooperation in D.C. Things can change and we don’t know who will win in November, but I think we already know who has lost.

Binge-watching with Kristen Bell

GETTY IMAGES

THE FUN STARTS HERE The co-star of “The Boss” is glad she hasn’t had any terrible employers. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

In “The Boss,” Kristen Bell is the straight woman to Melissa McCarthy’s outlandish and ridiculous business titan, playing her long-suffering assistant who has to take her in after she falls on hard times. And given that the film has an R rating, being that straight woman means weathering a lot of rather risque commentary from her boss. But the forever “Veronica Mars” star, 35, believes there are worse ways to make a living.

Both you and Melissa have these reputations as being two of the nicest people in Hollywood. She did not disappoint. My husband [Dax Shepard] worked with her and Ben 15 or 20 years ago in the Groundlings, and they’ve have known each other since they were babies. I’ve always secretly been very jealous that he knew Melissa and Ben [Falcone, McCarthy’s husband and “The Boss” director]. Do you have anything like that Groundlings clique from early on yourself? Well, I went to musical theater school. I went to New York University, so the kids that I was in college with, we were just musical theater

Doing a movie about work, you get a lot of questions about past jobs, terrible bosses. Were any of your retail jobs particularly worse than the others? Not really. I only had two retail jobs, and I was one of those really lucky people that started working professionally at a really young age. I left college after twoand-a-half years because I booked a Broadway show, so I was very lucky not to have to deal with bad bosses. Not that there aren’t bad bosses in creative jobs, but I just haven’t experienced any of them.

early on that this was going to be rated R, based on the language. How much freedom does that give you on set? It’s brilliant when you have an R movie because you don’t have to selfedit. To me, whether it’s “Frozen” or “The Boss,” the joke is the same. Your instinct to make the joke is the same, but there’s always a qualifying [thought] of “What will it be rated? How can I express it?” And it is quite freeing to know that there are no holds barred. It wasn’t within my character to swear a lot or to get quite as raunchy, but it is nice that the people around me were able to, because it made it a lot funnier.

Clearly it was decided

are noted bingewatchers. What are you currently bingeing? Currently “Mr. Robot.” We really liked the pilot, and the show does not disappoint. For me, there’s a “Veronica Mars”-esque quality about it. Maybe it’s the underdog,

maybe it’s the fighting for justice. It’s a bizarre show, but I’m really enjoying it. We also just started watching “Getting On,” which I’m loving. It’s pretty special. Are there any hard-and-fast rules for spousal bingewatching? TV binge-watching has to happen together if you’re in any sort of couple. Like, I have not seen the new season “House of Cards” yet. Dax watched it without me, which almost broke apart our marriage.

The opposites of ‘Outlander’ Tobias Menzies on the new season and playing two totally different roles. ALLYSON FLORIDIA @allysonfloridia

allyson.floridia@metro.us

Season two of the Starz romance-driven period drama “Outlander” premieres April 9 at 9 p.m. The series, (loosely-ish) based on The New York Times’ best-selling novels by Diana Gabaldon, follows Claire Randall Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) as she travels through time from 1946 to 1743. She leaves behind husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), but ends up falling in love with Scottish soldier James Fraser (Sam Heughan). Meanwhile, they also have to dodge Frank’s ancestor, Jack Randall (also played by Menzies), the villainous English knight who ends up capturing and horrifically torturing Jamie in the season’s final episodes. The 42-year-old English actor — also known for his roles on “Game of Thrones” and “Rome” — speaks with us about playing two vastly different characters and what’s in store for the season. What’s been your ap-

proach to playing such opposite characters who also happen to be distantly related? Are they similar at all despite having different approaches to life? Jack is brutally sadistic, while Frank remains so loyal and dedicated to Claire. They’re both quite different psychologies. [I’ve] explored the distinctions between them, but found moments where we’ve seen Jack in Frank and vice versa. There’s a lot of complexity and shading. In the broadest terms, they’re from different time periods. One is a modern man and the other is a pre-modern man. They’ve both gone through wars. Jack is the product of the Jacobite war and Frank World War II, [though] they’ve arguably come to different conclusions. In some ways, Jack abandons a sort of moral code and chooses to express his less rational and less civilized appetites and Frank, despite having similar traumatic experiences, doesn’t choose that route. You could argue that he has a remarkable woman in Claire and that’s why he’s different. Jack and Jamie’s interactions are volatile from the very beginning. He is drawn to Jamie

because maybe Jamie is everything that Jack has lost. Jaime has a profound honor to him, a moral compass that is apparently unshakable. That is very enticing and intriguing to Jack. But that interest is with desire to hurt and dismantle him. What have the fan responses been like to Jack — especially after that scene? I hope they enjoy the expression of human polarity in the piece. All dramas need that breadth of expression. Jack — though sometimes very violent and destructive and hard to watch — he’s an antidote to overly sunny, romantic aspects. Nobody wants to see a show where there’s wall-to-wall people having fun. We watch drama to see jeopardy and see situations we hope not to experience in our own lives. To that end, I think Jack is a very important ingredient to the show. Any new faces we should be watching out for in season two? There’s a great new cast. Andrew Gower is playing Prince Charlie. There’s a lot to enjoy going into the French court, which is the start of the second season. There’s a different feel, fresh blood.

LIFE: Some disassembly required.

Steven Souza could easily blast 20 homers and swipe 20 bases this season. GETTY IMAGES

With the news that A.J. Pollock will miss most of the 2016 season with an elbow fracture, many fantasy owners have been dealt the first significant blow to their roster. Here are four replacement options who are owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Steven Souza

Participation involves: • Receiving 4 doses of the investigational antibody • Up to 60 months of participation

Compensation is provided.

To learn more, contact our recruitment specialist at 1-800-RUCARES or RUCARES@Rockefeller.edu

(48 percent owned) Souza is a fairly substantial liability in batting average — he hit only .225 a season ago thanks to a gargantuan whiff rate. However, he is also likely the only player available on the wire in your league who is a good bet to hit 20 homers and steal 20 bases. If you play in a league that uses on-base percentage instead of batting average, Souza is a much more valuable asset.

Marcell Ozuna (41 percent) Ozuna was a popular sleeper in

drafts last season after totaling 23 homers and 85 RBIs in 2014. Unfortunately for those who targeted him, Ozuna stumbled out of the gate and earned a demotion to the minors, ultimately resulting in a lost season. He hit much better in the second half, however, and the Marlins resisted the urge to sell low on him this winter. Now he appears to be Don Mattingly’s choice to hit second in the order.

Domingo Santana (39 percent) Santana’s Major League career didn’t get off to the most auspicious start. In a blink-and-youmissed-it cup of coffee in 2014, he struck out in 14 of 18 trips to the plate. Last season, though, he managed eight homers and four steals in only 160 at-bats. The bulk of that production came after he was traded from Houston to Milwaukee as part of the package for Carlos Gomez. Santana not only has a clear path to playing time with the non-contending

Brewers, he’s currently got a grip of the leadoff spot. If he can stick there all season, 30 homers isn’t a crazy thought, along with plenty of runs and double-digit stolen bases.

Socrates Brito (9 percent) We conclude with the man who will replace Pollock himself in the Arizona outfield. Brito had already been drawing some attention in deep and NL-only leagues before the injury; he averaged 10 homers and 30 steals in the minors the past two seasons. Of course, that was at High-A and Double-A, but Brito has the tools to succeed at the big-league level. With Pollock out for potentially all of 2016, Brito will be given the opportunity to run with the center field job. He hit second in the lineup on Tuesday, ahead of Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta. If he can hit well enough to stick there, runs should come in bunches.
