US NAVY OFFICER CHARGED WITH SPYING

1

A U.S. Navy officer with access to sensitive U.S. intelligence faces espionage charges over accusations he passed state secrets, possibly to China and Taiwan, a U.S. official told Reuters. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the suspect as Lieutenant Commander Edward Lin, who was born in Taiwan and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen, according a Navy profile article written about him in 2008. A redacted Navy charge sheet said the suspect was assigned to the headquarters for the Navy’s Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, which oversees intelligence collection activities. The charge sheet redacted out the name of the suspect and the Navy declined to provide details on his identity. REUTERS

THREE MEN BLOW THEMSELVES UP NEAR POLICE STATION IN RUSSIA

Three men blew themselves up outside a rural police station in southern Russia on Monday after trying to gain entry to the building as part of an unsuccessful attack, Russian investigators said in a statement. The attack took place in Novoselitskoe, a village in Russia’s Stavropol region close to the volatile North Caucasus area, where Islamist militants intent on carving out a breakaway caliphate have targeted policemen in a series of car bombings and shootings. “As a result of the blasts the police station and some cars nearby suffered some damage,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement. “No local people or police were hurt.” REUTERS

ZIKA IMPACT ‘SCARIER THAN WE THOUGHT’: US HEALTH OFFICIALS

The spread and impact of the Zika virus is wider than initially anticipated and the first vaccine candidate for the virus should be available in September, U.S. health officials said on Monday. Dr. Anne Schuchat, a deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters the type of mosquito in which the virus is carried is present in more U.S. states than initially thought. She said what authorities are learning about the virus is “scarier than we thought.” Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at a White House briefing the first Zika vaccine candidate should be available in September. Opening Day troubles on MBTA’s Green Line The news of travel troubles followed “massive outages” in Newton. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

Just hours before Monday’s Opening Day first pitch for the Red Sox, the MBTA was having troubles with the Green Line. Buses were replacing service between Riverside and Reservoir stations in both directions following a power issue reported at Riverside station just after noon. The T tweeted at 12:25 p.m. that there were

“minor delays due to an Eversource power issue,” referring to the utility company. A 1:19 p.m. update from the agency’s official account detailed the bus service between the two stations, which accounts for a total of eight stations along the D Line’s western end. The news followed “massive outages” in Newton, according to that city’s Patch website, which reported more than 7,000 customers were without power Monday afternoon — a fifth of residents served by Eversource. That number by 1:20 p.m. had dropped to 3,800, according to a tweet

Students were evacuated and authorities were investigating after at least 10 Massachusetts schools received bomb threats on Monday morning. Massachusetts State Police, local police and bomb teams were investigating a series of threatening calls, some

of which were robocalls, received by schools in the state, WCVB reported. Officials confirmed that bomb threats were received in Ayer, Billerica, Brighton, Brookline, Charlestown, Hopkinton, Hudson, Leominster, Marlborough, Medway, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Boston Catholic High School and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, WCVB added. “Communities are following the established protocols that we have been training on across the state to assess each threat and the appropriate local response,” a

statement from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was quoted by WHDH. “The MSP Bomb Squad is responding to certain communities where appropriate.” Charlestown and Brighton high schools were put into safe mode while police investigated, meaning students were not allowed to move around the building, according to WHDH. Officials in Marlborough said the high school was evacuated as a precaution, WCVB added, also stating that Somerville City Hall received a similar phone threat.

Scenes from Opening Day at Fenway Even though it wasn’t a “W,” it was a good day to be a Sox fan in Boston on Monday. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

The Sox didn’t come away with a win at Monday’s Opening Day matchup with Baltimore, but it was still a good day to be a fan. Yawkey Way was again flooded with red, Fenway Franks were slathered with mustard and thousands agreed to pay a small fortune for a glass of beer. And Keytar Bear was there decked out in hometeam colors to set the mood. In the end, the Red Sox lost, 9-7. A bummer, for sure, but spring has sprung — and there are plenty more innings at Fenway where those first nine came from.

Two Trump kids won’t be voting for Dad in NY primary Presidential candidate Donald Trump says two of his children feel guilty about missing a voterregistration deadline, meaning they will not be able to vote for him next week in New York’s Republican primary. Eric Trump, 32, and Ivanka Trump, 34, the GOP front-runner’s second and third children, have campaigned extensively with their father, but both missed the deadline for registering as Republicans to vote in the New York primary April 19. In a telephone interview with “Fox & Friends,” Trump joked that he would have to find some way to punish Eric and Ivanka for their mistake. “No more allowance!” the New York billionaire said with a laugh. For already-registered voters, any request to switch party affiliation must have been made by early October. The

deadline for new voter registrations was March 25. “They were unaware of the rules,” Trump said Monday on Fox News. “They feel very, very guilty. “But it’s fine. I mean, I understand that.” Records from the New York State Board of Elections show both Eric and Ivanka are registered voters who are “not enrolled in a party,” ABC News reported. Like their father, they have made political contributions to both Demo-

The registration status of his other voting-age child, Tiffany, was not immediately known. Trump’s comments Monday brought swift rebukes on Twitter from critics who said the Trump children’s lapse bolsters doubts about whether Trump is a true Republican. Trump previously supported abortion rights and has donated to Democrats, including his now-rival Hillary Clinton. “I for one am shocked as the whole family really seem like lifelong conservatives,” user Awen Lake (@AwenLake) posted on Twitter, adding the hashtag #reallydemocrat. “This is so funny. Kylie Jenner swears she doesn’t overshare

Kim and Kanye’s ski trip was a bust Maybe traveling with almost all of your in-laws isn’t the best way to get away, because Kim Kardashian and Kanye West apparently did not have that great of a time on their recent vacation to Vail, Colorado, with Kris Jenner and the rest of the clan — minus the newly engaged Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna, of course. “I didn’t see them to be affectionate at all,” a source tells Radar Online of Kimye. “Not a lot of talking.” Well, actually, West was apparently having a great time and doing plenty of talking — just to strangers, not his family. “Kanye was very kind to friends and [paparazzi],” the source adds, explain-

Dating Justin Bieber got too real for Hailey Baldwin First of all, Hailey Baldwin wants everyone to know that she’s totally single and not dating Justin Bieber, though they remain close friends. Also, as she tells Marie Claire, when faced with the prospect of being the Biebs’ new lady love back around the start of the year, she totally backed out because that struggle was just too real. “I don’t

want attention out of dating somebody. Texts started coming through, crazy phone calls,” she recounts. “It’s hard to date somebody in this industry. You have to have really thick skin and be very strong. You have to focus on the person and nothing else.” Or, apparently, you don’t.

The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” junior varsity captain tells AdWeek that her fans on social media don’t get to see everything. “I only post on Instagram or Snapchat what I want people to see, you know? But there’s a whole other side to me that people don’t know,” she says. “There’s a really big part of my life that I don’t share online, and I feel like

people think that just because I have a reality TV show and I’m on Snapchat for probably 10 minutes altogether throughout the day, that they know my life.” And you know what, guys? Being a professional brand is hard work. “I feel like people want to see me have a cool hair color and dress a certain way and have pretty makeup and heels. If they were to see me in public, they would expect me to look like that,” she opines. “It’s also exhausting for everyday life.”

‘Idol’ runner-up La’Porsha Renae is not waving the pride flag La’Porsha Renae just lost “American Idol,” but that’s not why she’s in the news. While speaking to reporters after last week’s finale, Renae was asked about her native Mississippi’s new anti-LGBT law. The good news is she doesn’t agree with it — but it’s not quite the inclusive sentiment that activists are working toward.

“This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone stated before. They’re people with feelings,” she explained. “Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect.”

Meet the chill animal trainer behind the Big Apple Circus Jenny Vidbel fed the world’s largest rodent rainbow sherbet to get him to perform. She’s got this. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Jenny Vidbel has been living the circus life her entire life. “I’m a third-generation animal trainer,â€? she tell us. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do since I was 4 years old.â€? Her grandparents created the family tradition, having met at Ringling Brothers before creating their own Vidbel’s Old Tyme Circus, with Jenny’s family in tow. “My grandparents taught me that animals are our family and they’re to be treated with love and respect and that they come first,â€? she says. Today, Vidbel is a performer and animal trainer with the Big Apple Circus, which is parked at City Hall Plaza for its 35th season through May 8. She brings her animalloving philosophy to Boston, where she presents her well-trained fleet of horses and dogs as part of the 1920s transportationthemed show. For this particular show, the circus takes place in the middle of the city at City Hall Plaza. Where do the animals stay at night? How do they not freak out?Â

We have a portable stable set up in City Hall Plaza, and my trailer is right next to the tent so I can hear them at night and always make sure they’re OK. City life is what we do, and we learn to tune things out — and so do the horses. They’re calm and relaxed as long we keep hay in front of them. They’re so used to traveling and being around commotion. Do all the animals wind up doubling as pets for the performers on the road?

When we’re traveling, the entire circus gives them priority. Everyone knows their names and comes for visits and brings apples and carrots. It’s a nice family feeling and during

the off-time, I bring my animals to New York for some pasture time. What’s the work-versusplay ratio for the animals?

We work in total four or five months out of the year and the rest is off for the animals. I have a lot of animals and I alternate to make sure everyone gets a nice vacation. Next season will be different animals, and the others can be at home, taking this year off, so they hang in the pasture and get fat. Where’s the pasture, and who is overseeing it?

The farm is upstate New York, and it’s cold in the winter but it’s beautiful place to live. I have two people at home that stay on my farm and manage it. What would you like people who are skeptical of the treatment of animals in the circus industry to know?

They need to treat it on an individual basis. I can’t speak for the entire industry because there are bad people in this business like every business, but it’s frustrating to me that people would look at me and think I’m doing the same thing. It’s heartbreaking because these

animals are my life. I go to bed thinking about them and wake up thinking about them. I spend my life making sure they comfortable and happy. I can understand people’s concerns because there are some not-so-nice things out there, but there are too many of us in the industry that would do anything for our animals and we get upset with the handful of others who aren’t so nice. What’s the been the weirdest animal you’ve had to train?

A capybara, which is like the world’s largest rodent. He was a cool dude, but also a challenge because his personality was very dry. He was going to do whatever he wanted to do whenever he wanted to do it. We discovered he loved sherbet and I decided that we should make it look like he was singing so we filled a microphone with rainbow sherbet. He didn’t like raspberry, it had to be rainbow. That’s been my mantra for all the animals in the circus — we just find what they like to do and what they want to do and work with it. It’s pretty easy and shows in the ring that they’re happy.

Breaking it down, without breaking up The Joy Formidable’s Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan talks about the band’s time off. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

Don’t call The Joy Formidable’s third album, “Hitch,” a breakup record. True, the album, which dropped at the end of March, is the Welsh rock trio’s first since singer and guitarist Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan split up with co-founding bassist Rhydian Dafydd. But, says Bryan, things were all good by the time they began recording in their native North Wales last year. “It’s been a while now since Rhyd and I split up. That all happened during the tour for the last re-

cord in 2014,” Bryan says. “It was hard for a while during the tour, but we worked through it. This is not a breakup album. We definitely didn’t want to make one of those.” Indeed, there’s not a teary ballad in sight and the trio, which includes drummer Matthew James Thomas, sounds fiery and feisty. As they say, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger, but there was a dark period, which affected more than Bryan

and Dafydd. “We were together for seven years, so there was all the initial pain. We did our grieving during the last tour. But Matt was affected too — he felt like a part of his family had broken up. He went through it as much as us, in a way. He didn’t know whether it was going to

be antagonistic, or what the fallout would be.” Thankfully, there was none. Besides, the business wrangling going on behind the scenes as the band’s infrastructure — record label and management — fell apart, galvanized the three. The band recognized they needed space and

creating “Hitch.” “There’s an element of lost love to the record and it chronicles change, but it also includes exciting elements of change. But the record is also us celebrating the fact that we kept on keeping on. It’s celebrating still being a group: It celebrates tenacity and true friendship.”

Regional report If you’re already reaching for the tissues, know that you’re far from alone: Thanks to a mild winter and a powerful El Niño, experts warn that mold and pollen are getting an early, enthusiastic start this year. On the bright side, it could be worse. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, these are the top five most uncomfortable places to live with allergies this spring:

wellbeing

1. Jackson, Mississippi 2. Memphis, Tennessee 3. Syracuse, New York 4. Louisville, Kentucky 5. McAllen, Texas Chiggy & N’s allergen-blocking sunglasses ($30 per pair) are available in three colors at Chiggyandn.com.

Stop allergies from messing with your kid New protective shades block allergens — and look cool doing it. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Looking good As parents know, simply providing a useful product isn’t enough — if that were the case, kids would wear hats before heading out into the snow, and retainers wouldn’t get “lost” so often. Fortunately, Chiggy & N sunglasses are as stylish as they are effective. “That was all Deepika,” admits Manish. “She kept saying, ‘If they don’t look fun, no matter what we say, kids won’t wear them.’”

When you have kids with allergies, spring isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s more like itchy eyes and canceled play dates followed by frustrating visits to the doctor. “When we took our kids out in the spring, their eyes would get really red and itchy, and swell up. It felt like each weekend was spent sitting in the doctors of-

fice,” says Manish Chadha, whose twin boys suffer from allergies, one severely. “Then last year, in Central Park, I was like, ‘This is ridiculous— we shouldn’t have even brought them out.’” This spring, however, the twins are looking forward to enjoying the season more comfortably and just as actively. Along with their allergist, Chadha and his wife, Deepika, created Chiggy & N, a line of sunglasses specially designed to block eye allergens such as pollen, dust and sand for kids ages 4 to 10. Featuring allaround protective shields, the adjustable glasses also

offer UV sun protection and are crafted from superdurable, playgroundfriendly plastic. Effective at blocking up to 98 percent of particles, the glasses have allowed the Chadhas to significantly reduce allergy meds and days stuck indoors. “It seemed simple,” says Chadha of taking matters into their own hands. “We have all of these medications to treat allergies — why don’t we have any way to prevent the allergens from getting in?” Editor’s note: Manish Chadha is related to Metro National Features Editor Tina Chadha.

Red Sox stars come up short David Price, Craig Kimbrel and David Ortiz couldn’t come through at Fenway Park on Monday. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Red Sox were led by their superstar players in their official season opener last week in Cleveland as David Price, Craig Kimbrel and David Ortiz came up huge. The contrast in the Sox’ Fenway Park opener on Monday was striking. Price gave up five earned runs in five innings of work, Kimbrel gave up a three-run ninth inning bomb and Ortiz hit into a double-play in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox fell, 9-7, to Baltimore (6-0). Kimbrel’s gaffe was the most costly as Orioles slugger Chris Davis

mashed a ball to straightaway center and snapped a 6-6 tie. Price’s issues began in the third inning as Davis drove in a pair of runs on a single and Mark Trumbo belted a

three-run homer to rightcenter. Price threw 103 pitches total, striking out eight, walking two and allowing five hits. A classic Red Sox comeback seemed like

it was in the cards in the ninth as Mookie Betts had a solo homer and Ortiz came to the plate with Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts aboard. But Ortiz’s grounder

up the middle couldn’t quite make it into the outfield grass, halting the storybook thoughts in Ortiz’s final Opening Day as a Red Sox player at Fenway.

)NJURED

Ortiz did collect a pair of hits on the afternoon, including an RBI. The Red Sox are now 3-3 on the season, looking up at the undefeated Orioles in the AL East standings. The Sox will get another crack at blemishing Baltimore’s perfect mark Tuesday night (7, NESN) when they send Clay Buchholz (0-0, 11.25 ERA) to the mound. Buchholz was roughed up in his first outing of 2016, giving up five earned runs on six hits on 94 pitches to the Indians on April 6. Righty Mike Wright is slated to get the start on the mound for the O’s. Wright has not yet pitched this season. The 26-year-old hurler was 3-5 last year with a 6.04 ERA. The Red Sox close out their three-game set with the Orioles on Wednesday night before hosting Toronto this weekend and Tampa Bay next week.
