UBER SAYS IT GAVE U.S. AGENCIES DATA ON MORE THAN 12M USERS
1
Uber on Tuesday released its first ever transparency report detailing the information requested by not only U.S. law enforcement agencies, but also by regulators. The ride-sharing company said that between July and December 2015, it had provided information on more than 12 million riders and drivers to various U.S. regulators and on 469 users to state and federal law agencies. The privately held company, valued at more than $60 billion, said the agencies requested information on trips, trip requests, pickup and dropoff areas, fares, vehicles and drivers. Uber said it got 415 requests from law enforcement agencies, a majority of which came from state governments. REUTERS
DECLASSIFIED: SECRETIVE NORTH KOREA LIFTS VEIL ON ARMS PROGRAM
2
Ahead of a rare ruling party Congress next month, secretive North Korea is revealing details of its weapons development program for the first time, showcasing its push to develop long-range nuclear missiles despite sanctions. Until recently, information on the North’s weapons program was hard to come by, with foreign governments and experts relying on satellite imagery, tiny samples of atomic particles collected after nuclear tests and mangled parts and materials recovered from long-range rocket launches. No longer. In just over a month, the North has published articles with technicolor photographic detail on a range of tests and other activities that point to fast-paced efforts to build a nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile. FORD PLANS TO MOVE MICHIGAN OFFICES INTO TWO NEW FACILITIES
3
Ford Motor Co. said on Tuesday it will modernize and consolidate its sprawling Dearborn, Michigan, engineering and headquarters facilities over the next decade into two Silicon Valley-style locations. The auto company plans to move about 30,000 employees now housed in 70 buildings, some of which were built in the 1950s. The company will rebuild or upgrade 7.5 million square feet of office space in the transition. One location will be focused on engineering, research, technology and vehicle development and the other centered around its headquarters building in Dearborn. The company declined to say how much it plans to invest in the makeover. Ford released artists’ renderings of proposed workspaces with plants, contemporary furniture, open office designs and bright lighting. REUTERS

MIT student compiles data on her peers’ choices of underwear MIT wears pink undies on Wednesdays, and other revelations. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
An MIT student has compiled a trove of data on her peers – the kind of info one might otherwise get only with a pair of Xray glasses. In a Monday night post on the MIT Admissions blog, 24-year-old computer science and molecular biology student Lydia Krasilnikova released the findings of her research into what Massachusetts Institute of Technology pupils are hiding under their pants. Her “MIT Underwear Exposé” is an in-depth look at hundreds of students’ underwear choices by color and pattern: dorm-by-dorm, major-bymajor, gender compared to gender, the young and green students and the seasoned older ones. All that irresistible data is compiled into dozens of colorful charts and graphs, which she drew by hand. “I think the pictures in the pie charts kind of provide a sort of visualization
of dorm culture in a different perspective than you usually get,” Krasilnikova said in an interview. “A dorm’s culture is really hard to put your finger on, so it’s fun to see a sort of different kind of picture. I like the colors.” The experiment offers a window into a quirky subculture on a campus that has more than its share of quirks and subcultures. For starters, the info comes not from some kind of campus-wide survey, but from analyzing the 5GB worth of old emails stored in her inbox, she said. It’s apparently a decadeold tradition at MIT for students who send messages in certain student-run email lists — to do things like promote an on-campus event or report a lost iPhone — to tack a note at the bottom about the color underwear they’re wearing at the time. Krasilnikova hasn’t spent all of her time at MIT fixated on undergarments: she’s currently working on her graduate thesis, for which she is analyzing data tied to the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. But once she learned about the email list culture flourishing behind
“I get tons of emails every day with underwear colors at the end. It’s a lot of fun.” Krasilnikova
the scenes at MIT, and the many mentions of unmentionables, she thought of a statistical analysis “immediately,” she said. There were lots of revelations in her research, which she admitted is not exactly scientific, given that she’s taking her peers at their word. Men in the study wore just as many colors in their underwear as women do. The silliest undie choices — wacky patterns and cartoon character prints — came on Sundays. Almost all the entries for animal prints came from biology students. “Wednesday was the day when pink peaks as an underwear color,” she said. “You might recognize that from ‘Mean Girls.’” And as MIT students age, she said, underwear choices become less, well, exciting. “It’s kind of sad, actually. The kind of boring, grown-up colors go up and fun kind of dies,” she said. She also built a “sorting hat” tool modeled af-
ter the enchanted talking cap in the “Harry Potter” series that decides which of the four houses characters at the magic school Hogwarts will join. In her version, students can plug in the color underwear they have on. Her program then uses something called Bayes’ theorem to determine the likelihood that they’ll end up in one particular dorm or another one. “I hope that no one actually uses this to make a decision about where they’re going to live,” she said. Since Monday, her experiment has rocketed to the top of the MIT subreddit and the front page of a worldwide Reddit page for data geeks, and by early Tuesday afternoon had been viewed more than 13,000 times, according to Google Analytics. Among readers and promoters of her research? MIT faculty and departments, she said. “Which is kind of hilarious and incredible and amazing,” she said. “My mind is blown.”

Two women accuse BU professor of sexual harassment

INTERNET SPEED Verizon to spend over $300 million to bring ďŹ ber optics to Boston Telecommunications giant Verizon announced Tuesday that it would ďŹ nally bring its high-speed ďŹ ber-optic network to Boston, in a move that could greatly increase speeds for consumers and bring new competition to the local cable market. Verizon told reporters at a
press conference that its FiOS Internet service’s premium package delivers download speeds up to 500 megabits per second — allowing users to download a TV show in about four seconds, or an entire movie in about 12, according to company estimates. Right now, Verizon can only oer about 7.5 megabits per second, according to The Boston Globe.
Mayor Marty Walsh also spoke to reporters, acknowledging that Boston was lagging in high-speed Internet access but that it’s been a priority in his administration. “We forged strong partnerships with Verizon and crafted a plan that’s fair and practical, yet bold and ambitious, the mayor said, according to the Boston Business Journal.
Work on the project, estimated to cost more than $300 million over six years, will also include eorts to include mobile service in the city. Construction will begin in Dorchester, West Roxbury and Dudley Park later this summer. The next phase will reportedly include Hyde Park, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain and other parts of Roxbury. A recently filed lawsuit claims the music professor sexually harassed the women through texts, emails, and in person. MATT LEE @OFF_YELLOW
matthew.lee@metro.us
A former and current student at Boston University have filed a lawsuit alleging a professor sexually harassed them and that the school did not act on their complaints, reports said. Boston University student Erin Shyr, 21, and New England Conservatory student Maria Currie, 22, filed the suit claiming music professor Eric Ruske sexually harassed the women through texts, emails and in person, Boston .com reported. Ruske, an award-winning French horn player, has taught at the university since 1990 and was 50 years old when he instructed the students, the Boston Globe reported. According to WCVB, the women’s suit cites
numerous instances of harassment by Ruske. During one particular incident with one of the plaintiffs,  “[Ruske] allegedly used ‘vulgar and obscene’ language during the meeting, then compared her performance to sex where ‘though very beautiful, [she] was only lying there and not doing anything.’ The students reported Ruske’s behavior to the administration, which allegedly did not act on the complaints, according to Boston.com. Citing the lawsuit, The Boston Globe reported that school officials told the women that Ruske’s “vibrant and effusive personality may have hindered his ability to understand his actions were in violation of the school’s policies. “It was really angering, honestly, to learn that I had reached out to them multiple times and that what I didn’t want to have happen — that Ruske harass someone else — it literally happened again, the exact same thing, Currie told the Boston Globe. Both the university and Ruske have not commented on the suit, according to the Globe.

Will Sylvester watches a lot of videos of people telling stories from the heart. But as he sat, late into the night, watching a reel of footage collected Monday from the inflatable “Truth Booth” near Fenway Park, only one of them made him cry. “That happens very rarely,” said Sylvester, who is among the creators of the booth, a traveling art experiment that lets passersby enter in privacy, look at the camera and respond to the prompt “The truth is …” any way they want, in two minutes or less. The story came from an unidentified woman (all the videos are anonymous) who said Opening Day was her first time seeing the Red Sox since her fiancé died of a stroke last year, and shared how happy the experience made her feel.
According to Sylvester, a New Yorker who is in Boston for the week, the woman also took the time to encourage others to visit the doctor and get regular check-ups. “I guess I call myself — not a tough guy, well, maybe — but I definitely was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. I am tearing up right now. This is really intense. It’s great. It’s powerful and strong,’” he said. On Monday about 70 people, most of them Sox fans on their way out of the historic stadium, dropped by “The Truth Booth,” which is shaped like a giant white thought bubble, Sylvester said. It was the first of a two-day run at The Verb Hotel on Boylston Street. From Wednesday through Friday the inflatable booth will be at a

Two charged, three detained over Brussels, Paris attacks Investigations into the attacks unveiled significant overlap between the groups that orchestrated them. Belgium has charged two more men with terrorist offences linked to last month’s bombings in Brussels and also searched a house related to the attacks in Paris, detaining three people, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday. A judge charged the two men, identified as Smail F., born in 1984, and Ibrahim F., born in 1988, over alleged links to the rental of a property that investigators believe was

used as a “safe house” before the March 22 suicide bombings in Brussels. Prosecutors said in a statement that they had searched a house in the southern Brussels district of Uccle, taking into custody three people for questioning over the Nov. 13 shooting and bombing rampage in Paris. Prosecutors did not comment on what was
found in the house search but said the three people detained would appear before a judge on Wednesday to decide whether they would be charged. Belgian prosecutors said they had reason to believe that those behind the Brussels attacks, which killed 32 people, had initially planned to strike again in France. Including Smail F., and Ibrahim F., six suspects have been arrested and charged since last week as a result of investigations into the Brussels attacks. “They are charged with participation in the activities of a terrorist group, terrorist murders and attempts to commit terrorist murders, as a perpe-
trator, co-perpetrator or accomplice,” prosecutors said in their statement. Police raided the suspected safe house in the central Brussels district of Etterbeek on Saturday, but found no weapons or explosives. The Belgian newspaper DH said the two men had been seen on security camera footage entering the house the day after the attacks and carrying out several bags. Four other suspects were arrested on Friday, including Mohamed Abrini, who investigators say has confessed to depositing a bomb at Brussels airport, and Osama Krayem, suspected of buying bags used by the bombers. Gwyneth Paltrow fears the world she’s created
Megan Fox is pregnant... again Let’s go ahead and take this baby bump Megan Fox is sporting as a clear sign of a reconciliation with husband Brian Austin Green. The last we heard from them — in August — Fox had filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences. But since then they’ve been seen spending plenty of quality time together and with their two young sons. And now it looks like they’re going to have another kid to add to the mix, as Fox stepped

Gwyneth Paltrow is starting to see the negative effects of the Aspiration Living Industrial Complex are having on modern life, and she’s not exactly thrilled about it. The concern, it’s real. “I have yet to meet someone who isn’t burdened with hyperresponsibil-
ity,â€? Paltrow tells Self magazine. “Everyone is suffering from this sense of ‘I have to do it all and I have to do it perfectly.’ It’s all my friends, all my colleagues: We try to do everything to such a high standard. And I’m like, ‘Where did we get this from? Because I’m f—ing exhausted!’â€? Where did we get it, Gwyneth? Well, a certain website that starts with the letter G and rhymes with “poopâ€? certainly isn’t helping things. But go ahead, feign ignorance.Â
Twitter fact-checks Kylie Jenner Kylie Jenner has said some pretty ridiculous things in interviews lately, but the more hairraising boast of all may just be that she “started wigs, as she told Marie Claire. “I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim [Kardashian] just used my wig guy last night, she said. “I just do what I want to do, and people will follow. OK, Jenner.
Take a knee. Because the Internet has a history lesson for you. Turns out people have been wearing fake hairpieces for fashion reasons for quite some time — centuries, even. And if you want to keep it relegated to current trends, I know some Real Housewives who would like to have a word with you. Kids these days. No perspective.
LEAD PAINT WARNING! Think the LEAD Water Crisis in Flint Michigan is Bad?
The spat continues between Ice Cube and Gene Simmons In case you haven’t heard, old man Gene Simmons of Kiss doesn’t like the idea of rappers being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame, and the recent addition of N.W.A. has only stoked that dislike. And see, Ice Cube tried to be nice about it, he really did, telling the New York Times, “I respect Gene Simmons, but I think he’s wrong on this, because rock and roll is not an instrument and it’s not singing. Rock and roll is a spirit. N.W.A is probably more rock and roll than a lot of the people that he thinks belong there over hip-hop. We had the same spirit as punk rock, the same as the blues.â€? But then Simmons took to Twitter to respond, “Respectfully, let me know when Jimi Hendrix gets into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. Then you’ll have a point.â€? Which ‌ he will? I mean, that thing hasn’t even been built yet. Neither one is letting it go, though, as Cube responded, “Who stole the soul? Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Chubby Checker help invent rock and roll. We invent it. Y’all reprint it.â€? Come on, guys. Can’t we all just agree that successful, influential artists of all stripes are welcome to pretend they’d ever visit Cleveland on a regular basis?

Augusten Burroughs, author of the intensely popular memoir “Running with Scissors,” is back with his signature mix of humor and solemnity in “Lust & Wonder.” His newest memoir is about how his various relationships with people changed after he got sober. Burroughs has already written several memoirs about his difficult childhood and adulthood fails, so when he originally set out to write “Lust & Wonder,” he wanted it to be a novel. But he kept hitting a dead end. Ultimately he let inspiration take over and the book as it exists today was born.
Figuring out what works Just as he had to get out of his own way for his newest book to flow naturally, “Lust & Wonder” chronicles his attempts and failures to force relationships that weren’t quite right. The book documents the start of his sobriety, tracing two unsuccessful relationships in addition to the relationship with his literary agent and now-husband, Christopher Schelling. “I’d love it if the book got people

on love and sobriety what he maintains are his honest and fair representations of real life. In “Running With Scissors” he chronicles his negative experience living with his parents’ psychiatrist’s family, which he gives a fictional name, as an adolescent. The family sued Burroughs over their portrayal, and ultimately the suit was settled out of court. “I try to write things as fairly and honestly as I can, but I’ve got to be truthful, and the truth isn’t always flattering and it’s not always pretty,” Burroughs says. It was while living with the psychiatrist’s family that Burroughs believes he developed his “childlike optimism,” which he hopes readers of “Lust & Wonder” will notice he still has, even at 50 years old. The book just came out last month, but Burroughs is already at work on his next books. He is writing three: two novels and a memoir.

(and, ahem, pipes) on their four incredibly popular shows for HGTV: “Property Brothers, “Property Brothers at Home, “Buying & Selling and “Brother vs. Brother. Perhaps surprisingly, the Scotts found time to write a book. Hitting shelves next week, “Dream Home: The Property Brothers’ Ultimate
HOME Guide to Finding & Fixing Your Perfect House serves as a companion of sorts to their shows. “We can only take so many clients on the show, but we have all of this information that we’ve been accumulating and really want to share, says Drew. “The book is the second-best thing to having us do the work for you. Here, they y share SB PUBLICATIONS
LLC
their top tips for buying — or not buying — a fixer-upper of your own.
Be realistic about what you can fix Even if you’re a savvy real estate agent with a contractor twin brother, not every house is dream-home material. “Make sure to look at the things you can’t change first, says Drew. “We’ve been renovating houses since the late ’90s — any house can be made to look beautiful, but that doesn’t mean you should. If the location isn’t ideal, if there’s a freeway right behind it, you might not be getting the value that you think. Even if the ZIP code is perfect, the structure has to be workable. “Make sure you find a house where the outer footprint is what you need, says Jonathan. “As soon as you start doing additions, you need approval from the city and the neighbors.
Inspection, inspection, inspection Inspections are
FEATURED LISTINGS 12 Glenwood Avenue - Newton.

important for any home, but especially for fixer-uppers. Make sure you hire a nitpicky inspector, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. “The most protection you have is before you buy the house, says Jonathan. “You want to make sure that your inspection is thorough. Any red flags, you want to look into them — and if there are multiple red flags, you want to reconsider.
Budget in the real world By now, it shouldn’t come as a shock that reality TV isn’t quite real. Those pictureperfect houses you see the Scotts turn out on HGTV? You’ll be paying more. “Don’t say to your contractor, ‘Well, Jonathan renovated the entire house for $40,000’—they hate that! says Jonathan with a laugh. “What you don’t see on ‘Property Brothers’ is that we’re only doing three or four rooms for those prices, and we’re not charging some fees.
Consider a designer If you want an Instagramworthy kitchen, don’t leave that up to a contractor. “You probably have
11
to work with a designer if you want something as beautiful as what you seen on TV, says Drew. “First look for a designer, and then ask what contractor they suggest.

SLATE ON SOCCER: MESSI VS. RONALDO AND THE USWNT VS. USMNT PAY BATTLE OPINION
RICH SLATE @Richslate
Much like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning — two of the all-time greats in the NFL — for as long as Lionel Messi (22 goals, 10 assists) and Cristiano Ronaldo (30 goals, 11 assists) are both alive, they will always be compared and contrasted online, in living rooms, workplaces and bars around the world. After Barcelona’s surprising 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad on Saturday, Messi has now gone four matches without a goal (his longest stretch since May 2011) while Ronaldo scored a goal in Real Madrid’s 4-0 win over SD Eibar. The Portuguese star became the first player ever to score 30-plus goals in six straight La Liga seasons which is a pretty remarkable feat.
USWNT takes a stand The U.S. women’s national team
is making plenty of news both on and off the field these days as five of their players recently filed a wage-discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission late last month. The disparity in pay between the U.S. men’s and women’s team (which is much more successful) is striking in 2016 when you could easily argue (with plenty of numbers to back it up) that the women’s team is both more popular and profitable than their male counterparts. Co-captain and defender Becky Sauerbrunn even suggested on Monday that her team could boycott the upcoming Rio Olympics this summer if their salary demands aren’t met by then.
vs. Japan in Colorado — should provide much more of a test for the best women’s team in the world.
Checking in with some talented American players in Europe
The beat goes on for the UConn women’s basketball of soccer
The USWNT is threatening to boycott the 2016 Rio Olympics. GETTY IMAGES
While it hasn’t quite reached the absurd level of the Huskies’ dominance in college basketball, the U.S. women have
re-emerged as a superpower in world soccer with few peers that can come close to their
peak level. They beat Colombia 7-0 last Wednesday in Hartford and 3-0 on Sunday in Philly. In
2016, Jill Ellis’ club is 11-0-0 and they’ve outscored opponents 42-1. Their next match — June 2
If you are a fan of the U.S. men’s team, two names that you should know are defender Matt Miazga (Chelsea) and midfielder Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund). You read that correctly, two young Americans are currently playing for two of the top clubs in Europe and really challenging themselves to get better (what a concept!) instead of choosing to dominate inferior players in MLS. The 20-yearold Miazga started for Chelsea in their 1-0 loss to Swansea City on Saturday while 17-year-old Pulisic started up front in Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with Schalke on Sunday. Keep it up, guys. Celtics vs. Heat may be playoff preview The C’s host Miami tonight in their regular-season finale. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Celtics have shown the ability to win on the road and then some in 2015-16. They went 2021 away from TD Garden this season and did what no team was able to do in more than a calendar year by beating the Warriors in Oakland. But as impressive as that one night was against the league’s best, the Celtics’ most impressive feat this season might have been that sustained success they enjoyed during their 14-game winning streak at TD Garden. From midJanuary to mid-March, the Celtics had basically turned the Garden into Oracle East. The Celtics will likely
be starting the 2015-16 NBA Playoffs on the road, unless they get some help and beat the Heat in their regular season finale Wednesday at the Garden (8 p.m., CSNNE). “Somebody just put on my desk all the [playoff] scenarios and I said, ‘Would you mind throwing that away?’ Celtics head coach Brad Stevens told ESPN. “Like it’s a headache to even try to figure it out. We’ll see how we play [against Miami]. The odds are that the Celtics will meet Miami in the first round of the playoffs, so it’ll be interesting to see how Stevens and Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra play things Wednesday night. Don’t expect too many state secrets with the playoffs just 72 hours away.
Lovable losers Another game that
Celtics fans should have their eye on Wednesday is the Raptors vs. Nets in Brooklyn. The Nets have entirely mailed it in as they’ve lost nine games in a row. That’s music to the ears of the Celtics, who own the Nets’ firstround pick this summer. Brooklyn is now 21-60 on the season, which gives it the third-worst mark in the league this season. Phoenix, who currently has the fourthworst record with 22 wins, plays the Clippers on Wednesday night. For months it looked like the C’s were resigned to the fourth best lottery odds, but the Nets’ pathetic play has given Boston fans plenty to cheer about. If the Nets still have the third-worst record at the season’s conclusion the Celtics will have a 15.6 percent chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick and a 46.9 percent chance of a top three pick.Â
Jared Sullinger and the Celtics are 2-0 against the Heat so far this season. GETTY IMAGES
