HARRIET TUBMAN TO BE FEATURED ON U.S. $20 BILL: POLITICO

1

The U.S. Treasury has decided to replace former President Andrew Jackson with anti-slavery crusader Harriet Tubman on the U.S. $20 bill, and will put leaders of the women’s suffrage movement on the back of $10 bill, Politico reported on Wednesday. The longawaited decision keeps Alexander Hamilton, one of the U.S. founding fathers, on the front of the $10 bill, Politico said, citing unnamed sources. It said there would also be changes to the $5 bill to depict civil rights era leaders. REUTERS

MICHIGAN OFFICIALS CHARGED IN FLINT WATER CRISIS

2

Three Michigan state and local officials were criminally charged in connection with the state attorney general’s investigation into dangerous lead levels in Flint’s drinking water, a crisis that has fueled widespread public outrage. Genesee District Judge Tracy Collier-Nix authorized charges against Flint employee Michael Glasgow and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality employees Stephen Busch and Michael Prysby. Glasgow, 40, was charged with tampering with evidence and willful neglect of duty, according to court documents. The first charge is related to when he allegedly changed testing results to show there was less lead in city water than there actually was. REUTERS

EU HITS GOOGLE WITH SECOND ANTITRUST CHARGE

3

The European Union charged Google on Wednesday with using its dominant Android mobile operating system to squeeze out rivals, opening a second front against the U.S. technology giant that could result in large fines. EU antitrust regulators said that by requiring mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and the Google Chrome browser to get access to other Google apps, the U.S. company was harming consumers by stifling competition. The European Commission said such practices, which started in 2011 when the company became dominant in mobile operating systems and app stores, showed Google was seeking to shield its search engine, the world’s most popular, from competition. Berkshires grandfather finishes month-long canoe trip to Boston The environmentalist called for clean water protections in the state and also criticized GE. SPENCER BUELL @MetroSpencer

spencer.buell@metro.us

A Berkshires grandfather paddled ashore at the bank of the Charles River Wednesday, the last stop on his 250-mile journey by canoe to advocate for clean water in Massachusetts. “Heal the Housatonic!” 69-year-old Denny Alsop of Stockbridge shouted as he drifted toward the city’s riverbank, a month after starting out in Sheffield. This was Alsop’s second time boating the state’s rivers to make a statement about waterways. His last cross-state trip was in 1988. This time, he said, it was outrage about General Electric that convinced him he needed to re-create the journey. The company plans to move its headquarters to Boston and is in the midst of a battle with regulators over the cleanup of toxins from a GE factory in the

Housatonic River. “I didn’t plan this,” he said. “The canoe was in my father’s barn with droppings from the barn swallows and I went over there and pulled it out and I looked at it. There was a hole in it, which I had to patch. It was a last-minute thing. Also my body was not in great shape. But it’s pretty good now.” Alsop floated through chilly conditions and navigated terrain that was sometimes calm and sometimes trapped him for hours in tangles of branches and other obstacles, he said. He slept near the water in a tent.

GE has fought back against the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest demands in the cleanup of pollution in the Housatonic River, which came from a now-inactive GE plant in Pittsfield. Among other objections, the company has said it does not think it should have to pay to truck toxic sediment dredged from the river out of state, and insists it should be allowed to dump that waste in a facility close to the cleanup area. Neighbors have opposed storing the toxic material locally. GE has undertaken a

way to conduct the massive project. “We have just completed a huge dredging project on the Hudson River. We’ve spent a half a billion dollars on the first project on the Housatonic. It’s our intention to work well with the governor and with the EPA and do another successful project on the Housatonic,” Immelt said at a news conference on relocating to Boston. “We’ve done more dredging than any other company on Earth I’d have to say.” Tim Gray, executive director of the Housatonic River Initiative, fired back at that statement. “That’s probably true because they polluted more river in the world to dredge, so they got themselves into this,” he said, adding that the EPA forced them to pay for the project. Joining Alsop at the Esplanade Wednesday were children from a Berkshires elementary school, which is located near a site where GE seeks to store toxic material from the river. Families living near the river have been following Alsop’s journey over the past month.

“The water looks better. But it’s still poison.” Alsop

The highlight, he said, was meeting kind strangers along the way. A lot has changed in the nearly 30 years since he last made the trip, he said. “The water looks better,” he said. “But it’s still poison.” He also said he’d haul his canoe through Boston streets to the Fort Point neighborhood, where GE plans to build its new headquarters, then read an open letter to the company’s executives.

cleanup of a 2-mile stretch of the river near the old facility, and is in negotiations with the EPA about cleaning up further along. The toxins that have environmentalists concerned are polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, chemicals the EPA banned in 1979 and which have been linked to cancer and other ailments. GE CEO Jeff Immelt defended his company earlier this month, and said executives should be able to weigh in on the best

Margaret McCusker, Greig’s twin, said in a letter to the court that Greig has “not a violent bone in her bodyâ€? and was already serving an “unprecedentedâ€? sentence, The Associated Press reported. â€œShe has been a good citizen her whole life,â€? McCusker’s letter to U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV was quoted by the Boston Globe. “She was the only

Greig has been serving an eight-year sentence for assisting Bulger as he avoided capture during 16 years on the run, the AP article stated, adding that she pleaded guilty to a contempt charge for refusing to testify about whether others also helped him. She has yet to be sentenced on that charge. â€œIn my opinion, Cathy has been targeted as the person who has ‘not cooperated’ and has been unfairly punished as a result,â€? McCusker’s letter was quoted by the Globe. “In contrast, in New York, mafia [sic] wives have their own TV reality shows.â€? Greig is set to be sentenced on the contempt charge on April 28, according to the AP.

In Boston,” tweeted the artist behind it, who goes by the name JR. It had an extended run up on the Boston landmark’s west-facing side. The property owner had planned to take it down after six weeks, but kept it up for seven months “ due to positive feedback from the general public,” according to a statement from Boston Properties executive vice president Bryan Koop to The Boston Globe. The building, which is now called 200 Clarendon, last fall made the installation of the mural a piece of performance art itself. It didn’t announce

that crews would be setting up the unusual artwork — which the Globe reported was made of perforated vinyl — before it happened, and for a day kept the identity of the artist behind it a secret. Ever since the big reveal, it’s been hovering over half the city and greeting commuters on the Massachusetts Turnpike. “We are thrilled to have had JR temporarily use the building as a canvas for his thoughtful piece and thrilled to be engaging Bostonians in a conversation about public art,’’ Koop said in his statement.

Accused Lowell pimp held on $100K bail A Lowell, Massachusetts man with a lengthy criminal record pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he exploited homeless drug addicts in a sex trafficking operation. Harold Jack Lucas, 61, faced several charges, including three counts of trafficking in persons for sexual servitude, two counts of deriving support from prostitution and possession with intent to distribute the opioid Fentanyl, The Boston Herald reported. The State Attorney’s office said their investigation revealed that Lucas supplied women with those drugs — described as 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin — in exchange for engaging

in sex work. He also demanded the women meet a certain quota and surrender their earnings to him, investigators said. Assistant Attorney General Gina Kwon said witnesses told police that Lucas took women to Atlantic City — controlling how much they ate, where they worked and when they left the streets in the morning, according to the Herald report. “Lucas would ply them with drugs whenever they needed it — not necessarily in exchange for their work — all their money would go to Mr. Lucas,” Kwon said, according to The Lowell Sun. Lucas was held on $100,000 bail. CHRIS CAESAR

US students given SATs that were online before exam The SAT is used by thousands of U.S. colleges to help select applicants. At least five times in the past three years, U.S. high school students were administered SAT tests that included questions and answers widely available online more than a year before they took the exam, a Reuters analysis shows. Reuters reported last month that the College Board, the nonprofit that owns the college entrance exam, had often reused SATs overseas after first giving the test in America and even after some test questions began to circulate online. The news agency also reported that the organization had sometimes recycled exams in the United States, including last January. That was during a regular Saturday exam sitting, the day most Americans take the SAT. But the College Board has recycled SATs more frequently than the occasional Saturday. Reuters found that tests were also reused in the United States during special midweek sittings, on Sundays and during makeup exams, even though some questions and answers from those tests had been discussed online. A test given on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, for

example, previously had been administered in June 2013, Reuters determined. A copy of that test booklet was available in advance on a website called CrackSAT.net. It’s unclear how many students took the exam during the five sittings Reuters identified. The College Board has said that it’s unable to assess how many test-takers may have seen recycled exam material online before taking the test. Reusing test items is common in the standardized test industry. It helps ensure that scores on different versions of an exam are comparable. It also reduces costs. But if some test-takers see the exam beforehand, they may gain an unfair advantage and a better chance to secure coveted spots at top universities. That leaves college admissions officers concerned

about the validity of scores. “What I am hearing is there is a growing and vocal voice that is urging the College Board not to recycle tests,” said Anne Richardson, who chairs the international advisory committee of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). “I think that is becoming the number one issue in terms of test security.” NACAC, a group that includes university admissions officers and high school counselors, has more than 15,000 members. The NACAC committee brought up the reuse of SATs during a conference call today with the College Board. “They listened, we listened,” said Richardson, who is director of college counseling at Kents Hill School in Maine. “We are confident that, together, positive steps are being taken.” The College Board has reused SAT test material overseas even after being warned that the material had leaked, Reuters reported last month. In some cases, the College Board acknowledged that it also used test materials that it considered to have been compromised. The breakdowns in test security — particularly in Asia — were more pervasive that the College Board has disclosed publicly. REUTERS

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton began setting their sights on November’s general election on Wednesday, with a new poll showing Clinton would handily win such a matchup. Trump’s crushing defeat of Ted Cruz in Tuesday’s party nominating contests in New York tilted the energy in the Republican race back to the frontrunner. Clinton’s win over Bernie Sanders, while narrower, broke a string of victories by the democratic socialist and gave her a

much-needed lift. Trump’s win marked a rebound from his Wisconsin defeat two weeks ago and set him up for another big night on April 26, when Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware and Maryland will hold primaries. “Ted Cruz is mathematically out of winning the race,” Trump said Wednesday on Twitter. “Now all he can do is be a spoiler, never a nice thing to do. I

will beat Hillary!” Trump, 69, predicted some “amazing weeks” ahead for his campaign. Cruz, a senator from Texas, dismissed his rival’s victory in New York as a predictable win. “Upon winning his home state, Donald, with a characteristic display of humility, declared this race is over,” he said during a Pennsylvania campaign stop. Cruz, who has argued

that Trump would lose the election for Republicans, added with scathing irony: “Manhattan has spoken, and if the rest of the voters would quietly go home now and allow him to give the general election to Hillary, all would be better.” Trump, a former reality TV star, has adapted a more measured tone in recent days and appears to be trying to heal wounds inflicted by a campaign that has alarmed many in the Republican establishment. He sent campaign advisers to a Republican National Committee meeting in Hollywood, Florida, starting on Wednesday. Trump’s haul of most of New York’s 95 delegates moved him closer to the 1,237 needed to win the nomination outright. REUTERS

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would be inclined to replace Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen if he wins the White House despite supporting the U.S. central bank’s efforts to keep interest rates low, he told Fortune magazine. “I think she’s done a serviceable job,” Trump said in an interview published late on Tuesday, as the billionaire real estate mogul moved a step closer to becoming his party’s nominee with a resounding win in the New York state nominating contest. “I don’t want to comment on reappointment, but I would be more inclined to put other people in.” Yellen was nominated for the top Fed job by Democratic President Barack Obama and began

her four-year term in February 2014. In his interview, Trump said he “absolutely” backed efforts to diminish the Fed’s power and allow Congress to audit it, and backed away from his pledge to erase the more than $19 trillion in U.S. debt in eight years. Representatives for the Fed declined to comment on the report. Trump said he favored the low interest rate environment and that raising rates would be a blow to the U.S. economy. Trump had accused the Fed in November of keeping rates low to help Obama, an assertion the White House rejected. “The best thing we have going for us is that interest rates are so low,” Trump told Fortune. “If rates are 3 percent or 4 percent or whatever, you start adding that kind

of number to an already reasonably crippled economy in terms of what we produce, that number is a very scary number,” he added. The Fed cut its key overnight lending rate to near zero in late 2008 and kept it there for the next seven years to help the economy recover from the financial crisis. It raised rates by a quarter of a percentage point last December, its first hike in nearly a decade. REUTERS

At least eight dead in Houstonarea floods; more rain forecast At least eight people have died and some 1,150 homes have been damaged in flooding triggered by torrential downpours in the Houston area this week, officials said on Wednesday, as forecasts called for more rain. Seven of those killed were found in vehicles that had been in flooded areas, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and a local sheriff said, adding that

medical examiners were working to confirm the causes of death. The National Weather Service said more rain is on tap for the city, the country’s fourth largest, after a record-setting drenching that dumped as much as 18 inches on some parts of the Houston area on Monday. The weather service has issued a flood watch from central Texas through Houston and into large parts of

BRIEFS Five more with bacterial infection have died in Illinois The Illinois Department of Public Health said that five more people had died after being infected with Elizabethkingia, a disease linked to the deaths of 15 people in neighboring Wisconsin. The cause of death was not identified as Elizabethkingia because many of those people had underlying health conditions, the department said. Ten Illinois residents have been diagnosed with Elizabethkingia, and six have died. Symptoms of Elizabethkingia can include fever, shortness of breath and chills or cellulitis, but officials have said that the bacteria are rarely reported to cause illness in humans. Officials said the Illinois strain of Elizabethkingia differed from the Wisconsin one. The department has asked hospitals to report all cases of Elizabethkingia and save any specimens for possible laboratory testing. The patients who died in Wisconsin had serious underlying conditions, health officials have said, and it remains unclear whether the bacteria caused all the fatalities. Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois investigators are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine the source of the bacteria. REUTERS

GM cites progress in ignitionswitch case settlement talks A lawyer for General Motors said the company has made “significant progress” toward resolving lawsuits involving injuries and deaths allegedly linked to a faulty ignition switch that prompted the recall of 2.6 million vehicles. The automaker has paid about $2 billion in penalties and settlements since the 2014 recalls over the switch, which can slip out of place, causing engine stalls and cutting power to steering, air bag and brake systems. GM has admitted that some of its employees knew about the switch problems years before a recall was ordered. “We’ve made significant progress in terms of discussions and potential resolutions,” Richard Godfrey, a lawyer for GM, told U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman during a hearing in Manhattan federal court where federal litigation over the switch has been consolidated. Robert Hilliard, a lawyer representing injury and death plaintiffs, also told Furman that GM is “actively and successfully settling cases” over the switch. More than 200 injury and death cases involving the switch are pending in Manhattan, while other cases have been filed in state courts across the U.S. REUTERS

There have been more than 1,200 water rescues during the recent flooding, with emergency crews shuttling people by boat to dry ground and picking up motorists whose cars were caught in rushing waters. The Houston Independent School District, the country’s seventhlargest school district, said it would reopen on Wednesday after the

flooding caused hundreds of schools to close earlier this week. Heavy storms can overwhelm the drainage channels that move water from Houston back to the Gulf of Mexico, particularly if the ground is already saturated. The city faced similar widespread flooding during a storm last May and Tropical Storm Allison’s torrent in 2001.

Kelly Ripa not taking Michael Strahan’s news very well

Is Liam Hemsworth lying about wedding plans? Last week Liam Hemsworth flat out denied all those rumors that he and reunited girlfriend Miley Cyrus’ wedding plans are back on, telling an Australian magazine that he is definitely not engaged. And you’d think that he of all people would know. But an anonymous source in cahoots with Radar Online would beg to differ. “They are fully underway planning their upcoming wedding,” the source breathlessly reports. Oh, and there are apparently details, so dig these: “Miley and Liam want to have a summer wedding and they plan to hold the celebration close to their homes in Malibu,”

I’m from Tennessee. Elvis was obviously Elvis, but in Tennessee he was even bigger, if that’s possible. My sisters were 8 and 10 years old, and they were huge Elvis fans. I just grew up that way. Playing one of his posse is close enough to playing Elvis, I’d guess.

I’m almost sleeping with him. I’ve almost slept with him by doing this. I like that Michael Shannon’s not doing the usual Elvis impersonation.

It’s an Elvis

no one’s ever seen before. Michael Shannon is one of if not the best actor of his generation. When he and Kevin Spacey would go at it, it was like watching Ali and Frazier, if Ali and Frazier were helping each other instead of hitting each other. It was tough to stay in character because I was so excited by what they were dong. Making a film about this story is great, too, because Elvis seems so removed from the rest of the species that you can’t tell how sincere he is about asking Nixon to become a federal agent.

He sincerely wanted a federal badge. [Laughs] It didn’t give him the power he wanted, but most of his objectives were achieved. So is he

Celebrities aren’t quite as out there as Elvis was then. They might be a little more grounded because there’s more connectivity with fans through the Internet.

People are freaking out about the fact that “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars a woman. Well, not just because it stars a woman. It’s because “The Force Awakens did as well. Now, last time I checked there were more than a few men among the “Force Awakens main cast: Finn, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, General Hux, Han Solo and Chewbacca. Meanwhile, besides Rey there were only General Leia Organa, Captain Phasma and Maz Kanata for the female cast. That’s more men than women. Which is not, by the way, a complaint — merely a fact. Also, let’s just mention that the lead in “Rogue One may be a woman, but there are a ton of male characters as well. In fact, Felicity Jones is really the only featured woman in the trailer other than a brief glimpse of Mon Mothma. So why is everyone freaking out?

Excellent question. No one freaked out when the star of the prequels, all three of them, was a man after the lead in the ďŹ rst trilogy was also a man. Yet all I got online was grumbling about how there are too many ladies and how we’re all being too PC and will Han Solo’s ďŹ lm star a woman as well? Of course, some of these guys are just jerks. Others really seem to be upset. We’re still not used to seeing female leads that often, despite the “Hunger Gamesâ€? movies and “Mad Max: Fury Road.â€? This is why we talk about representation. One guy on Twitter told me he couldn’t relate to the new ďŹ lm because the lead was

leads as well as male leads. We’re 51 percent of the population. Did you know that? I have to ask because you didn’t seem to know that before. Thank you, Disney, for keeping Kathleen Kennedy’s promise. Thank you for getting the world used to this. Thank you for another female lead.

Adam Ray was ‘kinda diabolical’ as a 10-year-old He’ll admit it. ALLYSON FLORIDIA @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

You may recognize him as that bad guy in “The Heat,” but Adam Ray has been a popular comedian way before making it to the big screen. Ray co-hosts the “About Last Night” podcast and has guest starred on “WORKAHOLICS” and “Arrested Development,” among others. Following the success of “The Heat”, Ray went on to snag a role in “Spy” and is co-hosting a new TBS game show called, “Separation Anxiety.” Ray chats with us before his Boston show. Who were your biggest comedy influences growing up? Robin Williams, Chris Farley, Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey, “In Living Color” all had a really big impact on me. I really loved the characters. That’s a big part of what got me into comedy: impression — impersonating friends and teachers. You know, I was a real big, chubby kid. The first real laughs I remember were [when] there was a new girl in school in fourth grade and every-

body had a big crush on her, including me. And she didn’t like me. She had a big crush on my buddy who was skinny and athletic and popular, but I found out I could impersonate her voice, like to a T. So myself and a couple buddies would call him after school and pretend to be her and talk to him and tell him to go sit next to her at lunch the next day and rub her back and stuff. Kinda diabolical, when you think about it, for a ten-year-old. You’ve worked on a number of projects with Melissa McCarthy including “The Heat,” “Spy” and the upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot. What it’s like working with her? For how famous and just a powerhouse comedically she is, she could not be the most normal, down to earth. Within an hour of shooting with her and hanging out with her, I felt like I’d known her for 20 years. She would banter with me the way I would with some of my best friends from home. “The Heat” was my first movie and it was actually great that all of my scenes were with [Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy] because I spent all my time with them.

If you go April 28 to 30 Laugh Boston 425 Summer St. $24.00 - $34.00, laughboston.com

There’s a lot of downtime in movies [where you sit around] and I had to feel it out. Like “Uh, will these guys want to keep to themselves and do their own thing or can I talk to them and get to know them?” It was the latter. They were just so chill and they looked at me like I was on their level. They were like, “Yeah, you’re in this movie too. We want you to be at your best. The more comfortable you are, the funnier you’re going to be.” What can you tell us about the new “Ghostbusters” movie? I wish I could tell you one thing, but they’re probably going to announce it on “Conan” in a few weeks. There are a lot of really great cameos, which people should be pumped up about. Um, the effects are going to be insane. And honestly, the script is just really good.

Road trip! Getting ready for the classic American getaway.

Autotrader editors offer some of their top travel tips:

Prepare your vehicle STATEPOINT

letters@metro.us

Hitting the road with the family? Experts say there’s no reason to view the journey itself as a prevacation chore. “Travel doesn’t just have to be about getting to where you’re going,” says Tara Trompeter, managing editor at Autotrader. “Family time in the car can be a great opportunity for making memories and a little bit of planning before you get on the road will go a long way toward filling the experience with more fun and laughter for everyone involved.” To keep road warriors comfortable and content on their drives,

Do a quick check on the essentials before you head out. Check the wear and pressure on your tires, and be sure your fluids (oil, coolant and wiper fluid) are topped off.

Make it an adventure Just because you have an ultimate destination doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fun stuff on the way. Check your route for family-friendly stops along the way, such as a zoo, park or even toy store to give kids something to look forward to and to break up the trip into manageable pieces.

Keep little ones engaged

Technology features like built-in screens and DVD players can be saviors on the road. If your car doesn’t come equipped with these, consider bringing along a handheld device on which little ones can play games or watch videos. And if technology isn’t your thing, remember that magnetized board games and word games can work just as well.

Bring snacks Greasy food isn’t the best for staying alert — or feeling good — while road tripping. Instead of relying on fast food, bring along lots of small, healthful snacks to keep kids (and adults) content. Great options include fruits and vegetables that are easy to eat and fuss-free, like carrot sticks, bananas and apples.

STATEPOINT

Have patience! Between road congestion, frequent stops and bad weather, travel time can take longer than anticipated. Allow and plan for extra travel time, and you’ll have a better chance of arriving safely and stress-free.

Consider an upgrade Before setting off, con-

sider upgrading your old gas-guzzler to a vehicle that’s energy-efficient and comfortable enough to make the long journey with the family in tow. To help, Autotrader rounded up a list of 10 fuel-efficient family cars that boast affordability, roomy interiors and a fuel efficient 30 miles per gallon on the high-

way: the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Optima, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Outback and the Toyota Camry. To learn more, visit autotrader.com. With the right strategies for happy travels, you can begin your vacation the second you hit the road.

Gas is cheap – so where should we go? Road trips from Boston for when you just want to get away. According to AAA, Americans paid the cheapest quarterly gasoline prices in 12 years during the first three months of 2016. And while it’s expected that gas prices will creep up during the summer months, the cost of filling your tank still will likely be lower than last year. “The average price in Massachusetts for regular, unleaded fuel, as of this week’s survey, is $2.08 — and even though pump prices are on the rise, that $2.08 average is still 38 cents less than at this time last year,” says Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Northeast. “The bottom line is, it’s a great time to take a road trip.” So fill up at your favorite pump — “I also

advise road trippers and travelers to fill their tanks before they travel at the lowest price, as gas prices are often higher on or near major highways and at popular tourist destinations,” says Maguire — clear any winter gear that can slow you down out of the trunk and check out some ideas from AAA on where to go this spring and summer:

Acadia National Park, Maine 280 miles one way, 560 miles round trip. Estimated gas cost: $60.84 one-way, and $121.68 round-trip.

Acadia is stunningly scenic, great for hiking and cycling, with a series of carriage paths that are the legacy of John D. Rockefeller Jr. It’s a great time to visit, as Acadia is New England’s only national park, and it’s celebrating its centennial—the U.S. National

Washington, D.C. 453 miles one way, 906 round trip. Estimated gas cost: $60.84 one-way, and $121.68 round trip.

An incredibly historyrich and educational getaway for families. A huge plus is that the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo are both fascinating and free.

Newport, Rhode Island 72.5 miles one way via Route 24 South, and 145 miles round trip. Estimated gas cost: $7.29 one-way and $14.58 round trip.

Some bizarre new Swedish research is investigating whether cats from different parts of the country have varying regional accents (read: meows). From recordings, scientists at Lund University are comparing the sounds of cats from Stockholm — in central Sweden — and Lund, which is 300 miles south of the capital. “I share my home with five cats with whom I communicate using both visual and vocal signals, and I found a variation in their vocalizations, especially in the melody of the meows,â€? said project leader Susanne SchĂśtz. The experts believe that the investigation into feline “dialectsâ€? is important to gain a better understanding of the relationship between humans and cats, particularly in terms of

HULL

the vocal signals used to communicate. “They seemed to use different melodies in different situations. We want to discover whether their meows relate to emotion or attitude. Or do felines use different patterns to send messages like: ‘I’m somewhat hungry,’ ‘I’m very hungry,’ ‘I’m unhappy,’ ‘I am content,’ ‘Could I please have your attention?’ — and ‘I need your attention now!’?  Or perhaps they simply imitate our intonation to improve the communication. Scientists will first investigate cats’ melodies to see if they can be related to certain situations, specific emotions and/or if they vary it consciously to convey certain messages. They

Meow! RACHEL RACZKA

will record the meows of 30-50 felines in different situations: during feeding time, when they access places behind closed doors, etc. — and use phonetic methods to analyze the melody. Early tests have already shown that cats, which were recorded in their home kitchen during feeding time, often had melodies with a tonal rise at the end. Felines who had been recorded in the waiting room of a vet clinic had meows with a rising-falling melody (with a fall toward the end of the sound). “It seems that cats and their human companions together develop some kind of unique ‘pidgin language,’ and it is not impossible that some of the accent or dialect features of the human speech is included in the vocal signals of the cat as well.â€? SchĂśtz explained. “I have been approached by a number of people who say their cats do not sound like others. It could be because they speak Japanese or a different dialect with them ‌â€? In a separate study, investigators want to find out whether cats respond differently when humans talk to them in baby talk compared to a normal adult voice.

Universal Studios Hollywood Universal City, California Main Attraction: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter opened this month at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Boy wonder Harry Potter has triumphantly arrived in California this month by way of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a massive expansion of Universal Studios Hollywood that re-creates many of the elements of the original park in Orlando that opened in 2010. Anticipation is running

high for the California outpost that transports guests to Hogsmeade Village, the iconic Hogwarts castle and The Three Broomsticks for a pint of Butterbeer. As for the attractions, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a favorite in Orlando, receives some fine enhancements in its new

iteration, including 3-D video projections.

ready for a banner summer with its new triple launch Phobia Phear Coaster. The first of its kind in the Northeast, the hybrid coaster takes on a pretzel-like formation, rocketing riders in a pendulum at speeds that reach 65 mph before leveling out at 150 feet for a cobra roll inversion and intense vertical twist dive. It’s an exciting year for the park, as it adds its second banner coaster, after Boulder Dash initially put the park on the map. The speedy coaster features an extended out-and-back track and is the first to be built into the side of a mountain, surprising riders with unexpected fast drops and turns through the forest terrain.

Six Flags Great Adventure Jackson, New Jersey Main Attraction: The Joker

The tristate area’s calling card for top thrills, Six Flags Great Adventure expands its impressive lineup of coasters this summer with a new 4-D Free Spin coaster, The Joker. Featuring high-tech magnetic engineering, the coaster’s five vehicles allow riders the stomachchurning sensation of weightlessness as free-fly flips make every ride on the coaster unique. No stranger to intense Gforces, the park is home to the Kingda Ka, the world’s tallest and second-fastest roller coaster, and El Toro, a wooden coaster featuring one of the steepest wooden drops in the world.

Cedar Point

Sandusky, Ohio Main Attraction: Valravn

Safeguarding its title as the roller coaster capital of the world, Cedar Point welcomes its 17th, Valravn, this summer. Unique in design and in layout, Valravn features an ultrawide train with eight seats across three rows. With a terrifying 90-degree, 214-foot drop, the coaster is the world’s tallest and fastest of its kind, reaching speeds up to 75 mph as it clips through three inversions. No visit to Cedar Point is complete without testing your mettle on Millennium Force, the park’s signature giga coaster. The coaster extends 310 feet into the clouds before a drop that accelerates up to an insane 93 mph.

Dollywood Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Main Attraction: Lightning Rod

Breaking barriers and world records, Dollywood continues to innovate with Lightning Rod, the world’s first wooden launch coaster, which will also clock in as the world’s fastest wooden coaster. Reaching new thresholds as limits are tested at 73 mph, the hot rod-themed coaster will feature a 73-degree, 200-foot drop, and 12 airtime hills. With Southern charm to spare, the Dolly Partoncentric park excels with its live entertainment, deep-fried delicacies and a wide array of family attractions.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM FOR THE C’S The Celtics are admitting to their mistakes and are saying all the right things down 0-2 in their first round series with Atlanta. They need to “make shots” and it’s painfully obvious that they need to get out to a better start in Game 3 on Friday (8 p.m., CSNNE, ESPN2) if they’re entertaining any ideas of actually winning this series. Here’s some constructive criticism for this entire team, as we grade them for the first two games and look at what they can do better in Game 3.

MATT BURKE OPINION Matt Burke is the National Sports Editor and a columnist at Metro US. Follow him on Twitter @burke_metro

Amir Johnson: B– Johnson was clearly a bright spot for the Celtics in Game 2, pumping in 14 points and grabbing eight boards. But if you’re a plus/minus guy, know that Johnson registered a minus-9 Tuesday night. Oh, and he only scored four points as a starter in Game 1.

Jae Crowder: C– Crowder was so bad in Game 2 (2 points on 1-of-9 shooting in 35 minutes) that there were more than a few injury conspiracy theories floated by writers and

fans during the game on Twitter. It’s clear by now though that Brad Stevens would trot him out there even if he were on his death bed, or worse, if he had Tuukka Rask-like tummy issues.

Jared Sullinger: D+ Did Sullinger play Tuesday

Isaiah Thomas and the Celtics hope things will go better for them at the Garden on Friday night. GETTY IMAGES

night? Seriously, those were the most forgettable 14 minutes of basketball in league history. He allegedly scored four points and had four rebounds in Game 2.

Isaiah Thomas: C

Jonas Jerebko: B+

Terry Rozier: B

Bless his heart. He keeps trying. He doesn’t quit. But those nifty strolls to the lane get congested in a hurry against the Hawks. Atlanta’s game plan in Game 2 seemed centered on the defense collapsing whenever Thomas made a move toward the paint. Smart. If he can’t get to the rim, he at least needs to start making 3s. He’s 5-of-16 from beyond the deep stripe so far in the series.

He won’t lose you a game, but he certainly won’t win it for you either. He had a plus-5 plus/minus in Game 1 and a plus-8 in Game 2. By his teammates’ standards, he’s doing quite well.

The Hawks looked confused when Rozier initially stepped on the floor in Game 2. I wouldn’t even call it a spark, but Rozier game the Celtics something. Grading on a curve here.

Marcus Smart: C–

As good as he was in Game 1, he did commit a dumb intentional foul on Kent Bazemore with 36 seconds left that burned the Celtics. Then in Game 2 he, like a lot of Celtics’ players, completely disappeared. He got the start and scored just three points in 30 minutes. He had a minus-20 for the game.

Evan Turner: C+ Turner logged 34 minutes in Game 1 and 33 minutes in Game 2. He scored 10 points in the first game and 12 in the second. The Celtics need him to get toward that 20-point plateau in this series, though. For the record, he scored 21 points in the win over the Warriors in the regular season.

Tyler Zeller: C The Celtics planted the seeds for one legit run in Game 2. Then Zeller tried a hook shot that had zero chance, killing whatever momentum Boston had gained.

R.J. Hunter: D+ Eighteen minutes played so far in this series — which is a telltale of where the Celtics find themselves in this series. In those 18 minutes, Hunter has produced a goose egg in the points department.

Kelly Olynyk: COlynyk missed Game 2 due to a shoulder injury after playing 12 minutes and scoring two points in Game 1. The C’s desperately need his floor-stretching ability to create some room in the paint for their slashers.

DIG INTO THE NUMBERS EARLY

The opening weeks of the fantasy baseball season can be treacherous to navigate. On one hand, you don’t want to act rashly when dealing with such small samples. On the other, sitting on your hands might mean missing out on some of this season’s breakout performers. It’s a tricky balance to strike. Here are a few tips to help you do just that.

Consider the source When contemplating a new addition to your roster, it’s important to learn as much as you can about the player. Do they have a firm grip on a starting job? Where do they hit in their team’s lineup? Is there an established track record, even just in the minors? There’s a significant difference between a young guy with pedigree getting off to a hot start and a career minor leaguer doing the same. There are no guarantees, of course, but generally the former is a better bet to continue succeeding long-term.

Dig into the numbers As sabermetrics (or advanced stats, or whatever term you prefer) have become more widely known and accepted in the sport, the amount of data available has exploded. It can be daunting

KYLE BISHOP OPINION Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller. com. His articles and Fantasy Baseball Rankings are your secret weapon for winning fantasy leagues.

Process matters almost as much as results

Obviously, results are what we’re after. It’s easy to get discouraged with a player, even an established one, when they’re regularly going hitless or giving up runs in bunches. But being able to differentiate between a run of bad luck and legitimate flaws in approach is perhaps the most important skill one can develop as a fantasy owner. If a player isn’t producing but is showing improved plate discipline or making higherquality contact than in previous seasons, there’s a good chance the results will come soon enough.

Keep your emotions in check to sift through it all. You don’t need to be able to calculate the formulas to use the information effectively, though — you just need to be able to put the numbers in context. Some metrics, like strikeout and walk rates, stabilize quickly. Others may take most of the season to become reliable indicators. There are lots of resources that put all of this into plain English and can help you broaden your understanding of how and when to use the numbers without requiring an advanced degree in statistics.

Nobody likes losing or being wrong, but it’s inevitable that you will suffer both fates. At the end of the day, we’re all just guessing, no matter how educated those guesses might be. What’s important is how you react to adversity. Always approach managing your roster with an objective and critical eye — just don’t turn that critical eye on yourself when things don’t go according to plan. More often than not, frustration simply leads to hasty decisions that compound the error.
