HARRIET TUBMAN TO BE FEATURED ON U.S. $20 BILL: POLITICO
1
The U.S. Treasury has decided to replace former President Andrew Jackson with anti-slavery crusader Harriet Tubman on the U.S. $20 bill, and will put leaders of the women’s suffrage movement on the back of $10 bill, Politico reported on Wednesday. The longawaited decision keeps Alexander Hamilton, one of the U.S. founding fathers, on the front of the $10 bill, Politico said, citing unnamed sources. It said there would also be changes to the $5 bill to depict civil rights era leaders. REUTERS
MICHIGAN OFFICIALS CHARGED IN FLINT WATER CRISIS
2
Three Michigan state and local officials were criminally charged in connection with the state attorney general’s investigation into dangerous lead levels in Flint’s drinking water, a crisis that has fueled widespread public outrage. Genesee District Judge Tracy Collier-Nix authorized charges against Flint employee Michael Glasgow and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality employees Stephen Busch and Michael Prysby. Glasgow, 40, was charged with tampering with evidence and willful neglect of duty, according to court documents. The first charge is related to when he allegedly changed testing results to show there was less lead in city water than there actually was. REUTERS
EU HITS GOOGLE WITH SECOND ANTITRUST CHARGE
3
The European Union charged Google on Wednesday with using its dominant Android mobile operating system to squeeze out rivals, opening a second front against the U.S. technology giant that could result in large fines. EU antitrust regulators said that by requiring mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and the Google Chrome browser to get access to other Google apps, the U.S. company was harming consumers by stifling competition. The European Commission said such practices, which started in 2011 when the company became dominant in mobile operating systems and app stores, showed Google was seeking to shield its search engine, the world’s most popular, from competition. State’s GOP delegates could be kingmakers Pennsylvania’s “unbound” Republican delegates are under increased scrutiny as rumors circulate that the party may have a “brokered” convention in Cleveland this July. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
“I have two guiding principles: last man standing and electability.” That’s how Calvin Tucker, a Philadelphia candidate for Republican delegate, will weigh the Republican presidential candidates when he goes to cast a ballot at this summer’s convention. For months Republicans have debated whether Donald Trump, despite crushing GOP competitors in caucuses and primaries so far, can win in a general election. Meanwhile, Trump has criticized the delegate process as unfair while rumors swirl that delegates and the “GOP establishment” might try to block Trump from getting the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination. So Pennsylvania’s 54 unbound dele-
gates could play a crucial role. “The very nature of uncommitted and unbound gives you some room to have discussion,” Tucker said. “Once you’ve bound yourself, then that’s your candidate. So if that candidate fails to get the required majority vote, 1,237 on the first ballot, then you have to make a decision. Do I stay with that person on the second ballot?” The real question may be, “Who is making the kingmakers?” Individual delegates, who are considered federal candidates, are not required to register or report the funds they raise for personal delegate activity, according to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Delegates can’t receive donations from corporations, labor organizations, foreign nationals or federal government contractors. If they had a political action committee, they could raise unlimited funds, but would need to file FEC reports if they received more than $1,000. “The campaigns have been reaching out,” Tucker acknowledged. “The Donald Trump campaign has been very ag-

gressive in their reaching out and having a discussion with me, and I told them exactly what I told you.” But that doesn’t mean campaigns have been giving delegates bags of cash. “I haven’t been aware of any monetary stuff going on,” said Aldridk Gessa-Lang, a Philly Republican delegate who said she plans to vote for Ted Cruz at the convention regardless of how the district votes. “I don’t know what everybody else is doing. I don’t know if anyone is getting offered trips to Vegas or private jets, but it’s not me.” Lauren Casper, a delegate candidate from the 13th District, said she hasn’t received any donations or gifts from the campaigns either. Casper said she personally supports Trump, but will vote for the candidate her district votes for — and questioned the honesty of any delegate who doesn’t share their political preferences. “It’s really dishonest for my opponents to say
that they’re representing the 13th Congressional District, but not say who they’re personally supporting,” she said. “A lot of people are coming out and saying they’ll represent their district only on the first ballot. It’s imperative to ask people, what happens after the first ballot? And what happens after the second ballot?” All Pennsylvania delegates were unbound in previous elections, but the party changed its rules last September. With Trump’s rise creating what some have described as a fullfledged insurrection with the GOP, delegates have never before been so scrutinized. “I’ve been involved now in five conventions. This year is the first time I’ve fielded any questions about our delegates,” said Philly GOP executive director Joe DeFelice. “This is uncharted territory for all of us. I think that’s why voters need to read up on who their delegate candidates are.”

Veterans get noble treatment at YOUR LEGS ARE MADE FOR JOGGING fifth annual vet’s resource fair
Varicose Veins Are More Than a Cosmetic Problem
They may lead to complications such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), both of which claim up to 300,000 lives a year in the United States.

Philadelphia’s veterans, both the homeless and fully employed, were front and center for the fifth annual City Council Veterans Resource Fair on the Thomas Paine Plaza outside the Municipal Services Building. The sun was shining bright as City Council members and more than 60 veterans groups, health care, continuing education, career and other service providers dedicated to assisting veterans joined together to offer services and support. Roughly 200 vets showed up, many donning their old or current service uniforms and waving American flags. “I remember, at one point in time, pretty much all the city did was make sure that people got flags for Memorial Day and Veterans Day, remember that? That was ridiculous! said City Council President Darrell Clarke. “I want to say that while those days are particularly important to all the many veterans and all the people of this country, it’s more important to make sure that our wonderful veterans have opportunity, service and people making sure that their lives are respected based on what they have done for their country every day of the week. George Ginder, who lives in Philly’s Fairmount section and fought in Vietnam, said this year’s vet’s fair was bigger and better than years past. He served in the military from 1967 to 1993. “I thought it was a

great day for veterans, he said. “Everybody comes together with their resources to make everything available for the veterans. It’s like one-stop shopping. Ginder said, this year, there were more people attending and more exhibitors. “Naturally, then, it puts the veterans in good spirits. The entertainment was great, too. Live music was provided by Jerry Blavat aka “the Geator with the Heater, the Mummers Woodland String Band, Frankie Darcell from WDAS-FM radio and others. Major General Walter T. Lord, a military executive and member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board within the Office of the Secretary of Defense, served as the day’s keynote speaker.
“Events like this one are tremendously important elements of who we are as a nation,â€? he said. “Warriors join our armed forces for a wide variety of reasons, but the support we receive from our fellow citizens surely makes that duty much easier. ‌ The theme of ‘always remember’ is today’s because this city has always remembered her veterans, her sons and daughters who have gone off to serve our country. We in uniform have learned — and we’ve learned as a nation — the profound impact our citizens make in supporting her warriors and veterans. It’s gratifying to know that the city of Philadelphia continues to recognize those sacrifices and I’m both honored and proud to thank you on their behalf for that recognition.â€? JENNY DEHUFF

The founder of one of Philly’s hippest businesses is going public with his decision to use a controversial cannabis oil treatment for his young son’s cancer. Brian Dwyer, the founder of Fishtown’s Pizza Brain, went public on April 20 — the marijuana enthusiast’s holiday —
with the fact that for the last year he has been helping his 2-year-old son Waldo fight a rare form of eye cancer with cannabis oil. “Over the past two years, my journey has taken me all over the world of cannabis,â€? Dwyer said. “Weed is not just something that people smoke to watch Netflix, eat Cheetos and pull their shades down. ‌ It’s sacred medicine. That’s what it is. And I see it now.â€? Dwyer went public with the cannabis oil treatment for his son Waldo on his Facebook page and also announced that he is creating a documentary about his son’s journey. He has created a Go-
fundme campaign to cover production costs for the film — which as of Wednesday afternoon had surpassed its goal of $3,000 in less than 12 hours. Waldo Dwyer, who just turned 2, was diagnosed at 6 months with bilateral retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. Medical professionals prescribed chemotherapy and a variety of prescription drugs that made the baby sicker, then prescribed more drugs to combat their side effects, according to Dwyer. After treating his son with cannabis oil, Waldo began breastfeeding, crawling, pooping and

“Weed is not just something that people smoke to watch Netflix. ‌ It’s sacred medicine. That’s what it is. And I see it now.â€? Brian and Waldo Dwyer PROVIDED
laughing again, according to Dwyer. They continued chemotherapy, but eventually stopped using traditional pharmaceuticals entirely. At this point, Waldo is tumor-free, although not technically fully cancer-free yet. “[Modern medicine] is concerned with ‌ making you better,â€? he said, “but the road to getting better is full of just the worst stuff. They were trying to give my kid morphine.â€? But there’s no scientific research supporting Dwyer’s experience with cannabis oil, said Dr. Michael Dellavecchia, president of the Philadelphia
Dwyer
County Medical Society. “As a physician, as a citizen, I wish something that easy worked. I wish holy water worked, Dellavecchia said. “A 1-yearold baby can’t tell you how he feels. This kid could have just been high as a kite and oblivious to what his symptoms are. Dellavecchia cautioned that stories like Dwyer’s might make other cancer patients consider unproven courses of treatment. “Going with an unproven treatment with an undocumented substance where you can’t guarantee purity, dosage, quantity, versus an approved,
tried-and-true treatment that has been monitored and assessed by the scientific community, I definitely would go with the latter, he said. Dwyer, who quit Pizza brain last year, is planning to soon move to Oregon so he can have guaranteed access to more oil for Waldo. Dwyer, who previously hadn’t shared the treatment method with Waldo’s doctors, said he is unsure of the consequences of going public. “I think this story is helping people, he said, “and I want to help people if I can do that.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton began setting their sights on November’s general election on Wednesday, with a new poll showing Clinton would handily win such a matchup. Trump’s crushing defeat of Ted Cruz in Tuesday’s party nominating contests in New York tilted the energy in the Republican race back to the frontrunner. Clinton’s win over Bernie Sanders, while narrower, broke a string of victories by the democratic socialist and gave her a

much-needed lift. Trump’s win marked a rebound from his Wisconsin defeat two weeks ago and set him up for another big night on April 26, when Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware and Maryland will hold primaries. “Ted Cruz is mathematically out of winning the race,” Trump said Wednesday on Twitter. “Now all he can do is be a spoiler, never a nice thing to do. I
will beat Hillary!” Trump, 69, predicted some “amazing weeks” ahead for his campaign. Cruz, a senator from Texas, dismissed his rival’s victory in New York as a predictable win. “Upon winning his home state, Donald, with a characteristic display of humility, declared this race is over,” he said during a Pennsylvania campaign stop. Cruz, who has argued
that Trump would lose the election for Republicans, added with scathing irony: “Manhattan has spoken, and if the rest of the voters would quietly go home now and allow him to give the general election to Hillary, all would be better.” Trump, a former reality TV star, has adapted a more measured tone in recent days and appears to be trying to heal wounds inflicted by a campaign that has alarmed many in the Republican establishment. He sent campaign advisers to a Republican National Committee meeting in Hollywood, Florida, starting on Wednesday. Trump’s haul of most of New York’s 95 delegates moved him closer to the 1,237 needed to win the nomination outright. REUTERS
Trump leans toward replacing Fed chief if he wins White House Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would be inclined to replace Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen if he wins the White House despite supporting the U.S. central bank’s efforts
to keep interest rates low, he told Fortune magazine. “I think she’s done a serviceable job,” Trump said in an interview published late on Tuesday, as the billionaire real estate mogul moved a
step closer to becoming his party’s nominee with a resounding win in the New York state nominating contest. “I don’t want to comment on reappointment, but I would be more
inclined to put other people in.” Yellen was nominated for the top Fed job by Democratic President Barack Obama and began her four-year term in February 2014.REUTERS

At least eight dead in Houston-area floods; more rain forecast At least eight people have died and some 1,150 homes have been damaged in flooding triggered by torrential downpours in the Houston area this week, officials said on Wednesday, as forecasts called for more rain. Seven of those killed were found in vehicles that had been in flooded areas, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and a local sheriff said, adding that medical examiners were working to confirm the causes of death. The National Weather Service said more rain is on tap for
the city, the country’s fourth largest, after a record-setting drenching that dumped as much as 18 inches on some parts of the Houston area on Monday. The weather service has issued a flood watch from central Texas through Houston and into large parts of Louisiana. There have been more than 1,200 water rescues during the recent flooding, with emergency crews shuttling people by boat to dry ground and picking up motorists whose cars were caught in rushing waters.
The Houston Independent School District, the country’s seventhlargest school district, said it would reopen on Wednesday after the flooding caused hundreds of schools to close earlier this week. Heavy storms can overwhelm the drainage channels that move water from Houston back to the Gulf of Mexico, particularly if the ground is already saturated. The city faced similar widespread flooding during a storm last May and Tropical Storm Allison’s torrent in 2001. REUTERS

12 CAMP GUIDE
Beat the sleepaway camp blues
A kid’s first chance to have adventures away from Mom and Dad is exciting — until homesickness sets in. GINA TOMAINE @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Campfire songs, faded friendship bracelets and swimming in the lake — summer camp memories are the stuff of legends. It’s no surprise little ones are anxiously awaiting their first time away from home. Despite their excitement, that initial separation from Mom and Dad can be tough on both parents and kids. Local overnight camp experts gave us their best tips for coping with sleepaway camp blues:
Plan practice time away from home
Overnight camp may require your child to leave her comfort zone. ISTOCK

camp than their kids. – Tracy Power, director of Appel Farm Arts Camp
Do your homework together Research the camp, communicate with camp staff and ask questions and involve the child in the decisionmaking and preparation process. By getting everyone on board, campers and camp parents should feel confident and happy about their choice. – Justin Lavner, Director of Lavner Camps
Live by your calendar Make a calendar and mark the days you’ll be at camp. Once kids see that camp won’t last forever, it will be easy to make the most of their time there, and it gives anxious parents a countdown to look forward to. – Tracy Power
Be positive (even if you’re nervous): If a parent says in front of their child, “I’m not sure they can be away
CAMP GUIDE from home that long,” or “Don’t worry, if you are homesick I will come get you,” then the child starts believing camp will be too hard for them. It is vital that parents talk positively about camp with their children, helping them to be excited rather than scared. – Tracy Power
Stick it out Ninety-five percent of children report feeling homesick at camp. It’s normal. There is nothing quite like the feeling of overcoming something you did not think you were capable of, and overcoming homesickness at camp does this for children. It builds confidence, coping skills and independence. – Tracy Power
Be flexible We have had very homesick kids go home for a night and come back the next morning. One extreme case saw a child turn into a day camper. They did everything but sleep at

camp. They came back the following year and were just fine. They just needed time. – Claudia Carlson, director of Young People’s Theatre Workshop
Plan activities for you as a parent Plan to be busy the first night of camp. Go on a date, have dinner with friends, do something to keep your mind active, not driving yourself crazy with worry. – Travis Simmons, Executive Director of Camp Dark Waters
Ban separation guilt Camp will not always be smooth sailing. There will be times when your child is challenged, or gets their feelings hurt, but as researcher and writer Brene Brown says, “What makes children happy doesn’t always prepare them to be courageous, engaged adults.” Sending your child to camp is showing them love by allowing them the chance to dare greatly on their own. – Tracy Power

Sophisticated summer camps for city kids
Because canoes aren’t for everyone.
MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
For some kids, spending a week hiking, canoeing and camping in the great outdoors is the definition of summer fun. But for those who have no interest in tents or bugs or bugs in tents? Here are five Philly camps they won’t forget.
For the aspiring musician: Girls Rock Philly If there were a badge for “Camp We Most Wish Existed When We Were Kids, Girls Rock Philly would earn it every year. Open to all girls ages 9 through 18, this weeklong program features workshops on everything from songwriting to spinning to stage presence. The session concludes with a concert show-
casing original work, which students will also have the opportunity to record. As for tuition, a generous sliding scale includes full scholarships, so if you have a little cash or time to spare, consider donating or volunteering. July 11-17 and July 18-24, girlsrockphilly.org
For the budding actor: Arden Theatre Summer Camp With year-round kidfriendly programming, the Arden is dedicated to making the stage accessible for theatergoers of all ages. Taught by local theater professionals, the summer camps for students in grades 1 through 12 offer courses in acting, music, storytelling, improv, dance and design. Weeklong sessions offered June 27-Sept. 2, $290-$400, ardendramaschool.com
For the daredevil: The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts
Can’t keep them from climbing up the walls during summer break? Let the talented faculty at the School of Circus Arts show your little Spider-Man or Wonder Woman how to take flight safely. Classes in trapeze, acrobatics, tight wire, juggling, plate spinning and more are offered by the day or by the week for kids ages 8 and up. Classes offered June 20-Sept. 2, prices vary, phillycircus.com
For the messy maker: The Clay Studio’s Clay Camp Old City gallery and workspace the Clay Studio offers an impressive roster of half-day and full-day classes for campers ages 6 and up. Sessions in everything from wheel throwing to Claymation to sculpture are complemented by visits to nearby galleries and historic sites, making for an educational, inspirational summer.
Bonus points: Your kids get to make a mess — we’re talking a huge, muddy, one-for-the-ages mess — and you don’t have to clean it up. June 27-Aug. 25, prices vary, theclaystudio.org

Kelly Ripa not taking Michael Strahan’s news very well
Is Liam Hemsworth lying about wedding plans? Last week Liam Hemsworth flat out denied all those rumors that he and reunited girlfriend Miley Cyrus’ wedding plans are back on, telling an Australian magazine that he is definitely not engaged. And you’d think that he of all people would know. But an anonymous source in cahoots with Radar Online would beg to differ. “They are fully underway planning their upcoming wedding,” the source breathlessly reports. Oh, and there are apparently details, so dig
these: “Miley and Liam want to have a summer wedding and they plan to hold the celebration close to their homes in Malibu,” the source says. “Miley’s parents have already offered to pay for the nuptials.” Well, that’s awfully nice of them, hypothetically. “[Miley’s mom] Tish really wants the two of them to get married so that they can start making grandkids for her.” Oh. Oh, I see. You know, I’m starting to get an idea of who exactly this anonymous source might be.
Earlier this week, Michael Strahan announced he’s leaving “Live with Kelly and Michael” in September to become a co-anchor at “Good Morning

Mariah Carey and the very specific costume party Oh, Mariah Carey. Don’t ever change. The eccentric diva threw an “intimate” party at her rented villa in Italy recently at which attendees were expected to abide by a very, very strict dress code: dress up as Mariah Carey. Both male and female attendees, even. Yup, Carey insisted on a whole room full of tributes to her various looks, and if anyone
can pull off such a demand, it’s Mariah. But Carey herself, never one to risk coming in second in a costume contest — even if she is, in fact, the real article — did not go as herself. Instead, she reintroduced her black-clad, stilettoheeled alter ego, Bianca. Because of course she did. Again, ma’am, please, don’t ever change.
America,” and if that news caught you off-guard, imagine how Kelly Ripa feels. I mean, you’ll have to imagine, since she flat-out didn’t show up to work Wednesday, one day after the news broke. Sources tell TMZ Ripa is livid over not having any advance word about the move, and
she spent Wednesday at home fuming and feeling humiliated. And really, can you blame her? She’s the co-host whose been there longer — and whose name comes first in the title — so you couldn’t give her at least a little advance notice before the press release comes out? That’s cold, Strahan. That’s cold.
Tina Fey tried to get an “Into the Woods” audition Stars, they’re just like us — aware of how desperate they look, but often too late. Tina Fey humbly admits that when she was between making “30 Rock” and “the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and had some time on her hands, she tried stretching herself a bit — namely by trying to get an audition for “Into the Woods” by hounding director Rob
Marshall. “I tried to talk my way into that movie,” she revealed during

Local musician appears on The Food Network Many in Philadelphia know Mariano Mattei as a musician, producer and co-owner of Philly Sound Studios. What they may not know is that Mariano is also a talented chef. That all changed last week, when the South Philly native appeared on the Food Network’s “Cooks vs. Cons. There he competed alongside other amateur chefs as well as professionals, winning over audiences and judges alike with his homemade pasta skills. We got the chance to chat with Mattei about his life in music and food, as well as his plans to open up a pizzeria in Point Pleasant.
“Doesn’t your brother cook? So I filled out the online application and they called me within the hour.  The next day they set up a Skype interview followed by photo and video submissions.  Next thing you know I’m invited to cook for the producers and be filmed.  After that I got the on the show!
So how did you end up on “Cooks vs. Cons?
You seem to thrive under pressure with all that you do. Locally you’re wellknown as a music guy.
A friend of my sister posted on her wall asking,
Very cool. Were you surprised by the ďŹ nal round? I know I was.
I think the best dish won! Everything on that show is a surprise because you simply never know. When that clock is ticking, the pressure is on!

I actually learned to cook very young from my Nonno and Nonna.  Every Sunday was a feast with the entire family and they used to let me help out.  I loved cooking from day one. On “Cooks vs. Cons, you talk a lot about your grandmother. What’s the greatest lesson she’s ever taught you?
“Chi va piano, va lontano!  It’s a catch phrase of hers that means “he
who goes slow, goes far. You mentioned opening a pizzeria. Tell us about it!
So my father and I have a place at Point Breeze and Wharton.  We’re looking to open a pizzeria there with an acoustic venue on the second floor.  It’s in the works. For all the latest on Mariano visit Mariano mattei.com. Be sure to tune into the Food Network tonight for the finale of “Cooks vs. Cons at 9 p.m. JENNIFER LOGUE

Johnny Knoxville’s gotta love The King In “Elvis & Nixon, Johnny Knoxville doesn’t play The King but he gets close enough: The “Jackass alum plays Sonny West, part of the “Memphis Mafia, as he joins Michael Shannon’s Elvis on one of the odder stories of his career: the time he went to the White House for a meeting with Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey). Even Knoxville can’t believe it’s real. I don’t want to just assume you're a massive Elvis fan, since you probably are.
I’m from Tennessee. Elvis was obviously Elvis, but in Tennessee he was even bigger, if that’s possible. My sisters were 8 and 10 years old, and they were huge Elvis fans. I just grew up that way. Playing one of his posse is close enough to playing Elvis, I’d guess.
I’m almost sleeping with him. I’ve almost slept with him by doing this.
In “Elvis & Nixon,â€? Johnny Knoxville does more than don bushy hair as Sonny West, member of Elvis Presley’s (Michael Shannon) “Memphis MaďŹ a.â€? BROAD GREEN
I like that Michael Shannon’s not doing the usual Elvis impersonation.
It’s an Elvis no one’s ever seen before. Michael Shannon is one of if not the best actor of his generation. When he and Kevin Spacey would go at it, it was like watching Ali and Frazier, if Ali and Frazier were helping each other instead of hitting each other. It was tough to stay in character because I was so excited by what they were dong.

Making a ďŹ lm about this story is great, too, because Elvis seems so removed from the rest of the species that you can’t tell how sincere he is about asking Nixon to become a federal agent.
He sincerely wanted a federal badge. [Laughs] It didn’t give him the power he wanted, but most of his objectives were achieved. So is he crazy for thinking he could show up at the White House and get a meeting with the president? I don’t know. He did it! His reality was so different from ours. Celebrities aren’t quite as out there as Elvis was then. They might

Well, I don’t know. Some are pretty bananas. [Laughs] There’s some f—ing nut jobs out there. It’s different now. You can’t walk into the president’s office with a gift that’s a gun anymore. Those days are behind us. It must be fun to get to dress up in period garb.
Oh my god, I love that side of it. My house, I have a whole closet of the costumes we had from “Jackassâ€? or whatever. I just keep them. I have the big chops [from “Elvis & Nixonâ€?]. And I had pubes that grew past my belly button. I wasn’t expecting to talk about pubes ďŹ rst thing in the morning.
I went deep into character. I had a shag carpet of hair from my belly button down to under below and thigh-tothigh.

Spring is all around the Philly food scene From Morimoto to Brigantessa to Palladino’s, chefs are celebrating the changing seasons. CAROLINE RUSSOCK @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
While we might have to wait another few weeks for the city’s farmers markets to start popping up around town, the city’s chefs have already gotten their hands on hauls of fresh spring produce. Working with a new set of ingredients after a long
winter is the kind of thing that gets chefs excited, especially after a dragging winter season. Here’s a look at a trio of spring menus that take full advantage of the flavors of the season. With fish flown in from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market and not exactly native ingredients like wasabi, sushi isn’t the first cuisine that comes to mind when thinking about eating seasonally. Over at Morimoto, head chef Benjamin Dayag is embracing the concept of seasonality with a new tasting menu. The eight-course omak-

ase embraces springtime, a season where even the fish are a little fattier (and tastier), and in-season produce with dishes like Wagyu beef with maitakes and veal jus. Brigantessa chef Julia Robinson has chosen the changing seasons as the ideal time to overhaul the menu at this Passyunk Avenue wood-fired fare specialist. Two new additions are the unofficial surf and turf of spring: lobster crudo with fennel, basil and salmon roe and a Wagyu ribeye that’s seared on a lava rock and served alongside charred
spring onions and long hot peppers. The menu at Palladino’s on Passyunk reads like a farmers market shopping list with a grilled spring salad of favas and fava leaves, pea shoots, zucchini, fennel and little gem lettuces tossed in a lemon and mint vinaigrette but the real showstopper of the spring dishes is a sharable bistecca alla fiorentina i.e., a monster T-bone served over a bed of ciambotta napoletana, a melange of slowbraised vegetables kicked up with capers and basil.

It’s an exciting year for the park, as it adds its second banner coaster, after Boulder Dash initially put the park on the map. Eagles will take quarterback at No. 2 The Eagles sent a ransom to the Browns on Wednesday, but they think they have their man. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

Howie Roseman is swinging for the fences, looking for the next franchise quarterback at No. 2. GETTY IMAGES
Time for Eagles fans to party like it’s 1999. That’s the last time Philly had a top 2 pick in the NFL draft, and after making a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, they are now slated to pick second overall in next week’s draft and take their next Donovan McNabb. Who will they choose? Howie Roseman narrowed it down to two names. Carson Wentz or Jared Goff. Both quarterbacks. He wouldn’t confirm which they wanted more, saying the Birds were comfortable with both candidates. “It’s like vanilla or chocolate,” Roseman told the media Wednesday. “It’s like pepperoni pizza or sausage. What do you like better? They are not the same guy. They are unique in so many ways and both have some really great traits.” There had been speculation about the trade for several days from several reliable sources, and when the dust settled it appeared quite a haul had been sent to Cleveland.
Graham breaks down Eagles 2016 schedule When the NFL releases its schedule for the year, it’s not just fans who are giddy. The players are too. And pass-rusher Brandon Graham has looked long and hard at the Eagles 2016 slate of games. “I took a hard look at it and I know what we got,” Graham said in the Eagles’ locker room Tuesday afternoon. “I am happy to play the Lions again, we get to go do something there.” The former Michigan Wolverine is always enthused to be in his hometown, especially after their 2015 Thanksgiving embarrassment there last sea-

Their first (No. 8 overall) in 2016 One of their thirds (No. 77 overall) in 2016 Their fourth (No. 100 overall) in 2016 Their first in 2017 Their second in 2018
Philly receives the following: • •

“It’s a tough pill to swallow, we understand,” Roseman said of the steep price. “It’s a good job by the Browns. Congratulations to them.” It seems peculiar, due to all the money they have committed — and guaranteed — to Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel short term that Philly wants to add a quarterback. But the team is looking long-term and thinks this is the year to make a move. “These are young guys, and the National Football League is a big jump from any level,” Roseman said of the two players, almost locks to go 1 and 2 overall. “That’s one of the things we looked at, neither guy has to come in and play this year or even next year.” Both Wentz, from North Dakota State and Goff, from Cal, have impressed all offseason
son. They face Detroit in Week 5 (Oct. 9) in a 1 p.m. matchup. His analysis continued: “We play Dallas the first division game, big game at their house. I am excited about that too.” He is also excited about their season opener, against a Browns team likely to be a cupcake in the opener on Sept. 11 at the Linc. But what Graham is most looking forward to is the team’s final four weeks. For the first time in ages, the Eagles will close the regular season with three of their last four games at home against division rivals. They’ll face the Redskins on Dec 11, (before traveling down 95 to Baltimore a week later) the Giants on a Thursday night game on Dec 22 and then the Cowboys on New Year’s Day, all at home.
long and climbed up mock drafts. Roseman claims that he and Jeffrey Lurie discussed the trade and their draft intent with Bradford and that the Eagles presumptive starter “took it like a pro.” Their ability to take Wentz (who appears to be a slight favorite) will depend on what the Rams do — a team that also paid a high price to move to No. 1 (from Tennessee). Assumptions are that they will take Goff first. “We are going to invest in quarterbacks,” Roseman said in a press conference Wednesday. “When you go back and you study — we had time to do that — we asked what are the keys to winning and being championship caliber over a long time? And it’s quarterbacks. For us, we have a unique situation where we have a head coach, our offensive coordinator and our quarterbacks coach who are very comfortable with quarterbacks. “When we went and researched what the QB classes will look like going forward, its a daunting proposition.” It certainly appears that Roseman has a plan. The Eagles started the offseason with No. 13, but were able to swap selections with Miami when they traded Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell down south. “Sometimes you have to put your money where your mouth is,” Roseman said.
“That’s lovely because it hypes everything up,” Graham said. “From that point it’s all about who has the best record, but in the end it’s the division stuff. We really gotta beat people toward the end. It’s good for us.” It is very likely that if the Birds can stay afloat for the first 13 weeks of the season, they’ll be able to determine their own fate at home against each division foe in Weeks 14, 16 and 17. There is one drawback to the Eagles’ 2016 slate though -— their too-early Week 4 bye. “I usually like it in the middle,” Graham said, “but it is what it is. Everybody goes through it and I think with us we will adjust and Coach will take care of it because he understands.”
