SNOWDEN TO TAKE NORWAY TO COURT TO SECURE FREE PASSAGE

1

Edward Snowden will take the Norwegian state to court in a bid to secure free passage there, a Norwegian law firm representing the former U.S. spy contractor said. Snowden has been invited to Norway to receive a freedom of speech award from the local branch of writers’ group PEN International, but is worried that he would be handed over to the United States, his lawyers said. “The purpose is to get legally established that Norway has no right to extradite Snowden to the U.S.,” the law firm, Schjoedt, said in a statement. “U.S. authorities have already asked that Snowden will be extradited to the U.S. if he was to arrive in Norway,” Hallvard Helle, the lawyer representing Snowden, told Reuters. CHICAGO MAYOR, POLICE CHIEF TO ADOPT SOME TASK FORCE REFORMS

2

The mayor of Chicago and the city’s police chief said nearly a third of the recommendations outlined by a panel last week will be implemented immediately to reform a police force under fire for racial bias and the use of excessive force. The reforms are focused on restoring accountability in the department, rebuilding public trust and increasing transparency, according to a statement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office. “As a city, we cannot rest until we fully address the systemic issues facing the Chicago Police Department,” Emanuel said in the statement. “The police department will implement these reforms immediately while we continue to work together to find additional ways to restore the fabric of trust in communities across Chicago.” The reforms that will be implemented immediately include a better approach for holding officers accountable for wrongdoing, improving programs to help officers understand cultural differences. Singer Prince found dead at Minnesota home For more Prince stories, see pg. 16-17

Authorities were investigating a death at the home of the legendary singer on Thursday.

The legendary singer known to the world as Prince has died. He was 57. Prince Rogers Nelson — who rose to international fame for his innovative and influential music that combined jazz, funk and disco — was found inside his Minnesota estate. The Carver County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identity of the person as Prince in a tweet and said they would be investigating the circumstancesof his death. Authorities said they found the 57-year-old unconscious and unresponsive in an elevator. First responders reportedly tried to provide CPR “but were unable to revive the victim.” He was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said in a statement. It was not immediately clear what caused Prince’s death, however, the singer had been battling the flu and was hospitalized last week after his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois. The sheriff’s office said it was investigating the circumstances. The local medical examiner declined to comment on the cause of death. Prince first rose to fame in the late 1970s, and then over the next

three decades became known to be one of the most inventive and original forces in American pop music. Throughout his career, the singer won seven Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Some of his hit songs included “Little Red Corvette,” “Purple Rain” and “Raspberry Beret.” He had been on tour across the nation last week. Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger hailed his fellow singer and musician as “revolutionary” and one of the most unique and exciting art-

and fans. In New York City, the iconic Apollo Theatre changed its marquee to read “In honor of the beautiful one, ”NBC4 New York reported. Under the singer’s name the message continued “nothing compares 2 U.” Minnesota’s public radio station, The Current, will be playing nine hours straight of uninterrupted music by Prince. Distraught devotees gathered outside the Paisley Park compound in mourning. “His music made the hair on your arms stand up,” said one, Kristina Dudziak, 44. “It felt like he was making love to his guitar. … It’s a sad

ists of the last 30 years. “His talent was limitless,” Jagger wrote on Twitter. President Barack Obama called Prince “one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time,” and said few had influenced “the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly.” Fans gathered outside the gates of the singer’s estate on Thursday to mourn and show their admiration for the musician. MTV said it would be changing its logo to purple for the day in honor of Prince and Twitter continued to flood with reactions from friends

day,” she added, starting to sob. Sheila E., a singer and percussionist who worked closely with Prince in the 1980s, wrote on Twitter: “My heart is broken. There are no words. I love you!” Prince was briefly hospitalized last Friday with the flu after his plane made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois, celebrity news website TMZ said. A representative said Prince had performed in Atlanta despite not feeling well and felt worse after boarding the plane back to Minnesota, the website reported. But over the weekend,

the musician hosted a party at Paisley Park. One attendee, 26-year-old Jamie Reimann, said Prince appeared after midnight Saturday and played two tunes on a piano in what would turn out to be his final performance. “It was just five or six minutes. He introduced his doctor ... and asked fans to give him a round of applause and said the doctor was helping him feel better,” Reimann said. “He [Prince] looked fine, but his voice sounded like he might have had a cold or something. He didn’t look sickly.” Often making a statement with bold fashion choices, the diminutive, 5-feet-2 star sometimes appeared on stage sporting ruffled shirts and tight pants or elaborate costumes, including chain mail covering his face, a shimmery orange tunic with a cane, or bikini briefs. “He was a legend,” said another fan, Karen Menardy, 45, weeping outside New York City’s storied Apollo Theater, where some passersby danced in the street as Prince songs played on a portable speaker. In a 1998 interview Prince said he ignored the critics and had no expectations for his thencurrent album. He said expectations take away from the quest for great music. “I don’t expect anything,” Prince said. “I just do what I feel I’m supposed to do.” ANGY ALTAMIRANO AND REUTERS

“He was the only person I knew who had a purple house.” That was one of the

reflections on famed musical artist Prince from musician and producer Kenny Gamble, who paid tribute to the legendary star as news of his death circulated on Thursday. Prince, whose full

name was Prince Rogers Nelson, died Thursday morning at his home in Minnesota. Gamble said he thought news of Prince’s passing was a hoax at first, until he got a call from a friend telling

him it was real. “He was one of those great talents that only come along now and then, once in a generation,” said Gamble, one half of the famed Gamble and Huff duo with former partner Leon Huff, from his offices at Universal Charter Schools. “Prince was a musician first. Michael Jackson was a singer and a dancer. But when you saw Prince, he had that guitar. He danced like James Brown with that guitar.” Gamble said his favorite Prince song was “Purple Rain” and credited Prince, who hails from the Minnesota area, with creating “the Minneapolis Sound” along with artists like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Morris Day — just as Gamble and Huff earned a place in musi-

cal history for creating the famed “Philadelphia Sound.” “He was very flamboyant — a little bit of James Brown, Little Richard, and a whole lot of B.B. King, Muddy Waters,” Gamble said. “It was almost visual music — like ‘Little Red Corvette.’” Gamble said that the greatest thing about Prince was his “social consciousness” — pointing out that Prince went to Baltimore during recent protests over the death of Freddie Gray, and recorded a song about the incident. “He was a deep thinker,” Gamble said, noting Prince’s period being identified by a symbol, or as “the artist formerly known as Prince.” “The greatest thing about him was that he was socially conscious.”

PHILADELPHIA

Philly prisoners get their hands dirty for Earth Day Few idle hands could be found Thursday at the prison on State Road, as inmates there were composting in preparation for Earth Day. But they weren’t just making a day of it. For months now, inmates within the Philadelphia Prison System have been fertilizing and composting over a ton of food that would have otherwise gone wasted inside their walls. On Thursday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the city for the innovative food recovery project. “The inmates are doing all of this work. There’s a sense of pride and learning skills that will be transferable into a green market or skill sets that will help them

Acting Prison Commissioner Michael Resnick holds an award from the EPA. PROVIDED

be competitive in doing other things,â€? said Shawn Garvin, the EPA’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator. Garvin said each inmate participating in the on-site orchard program is trained in horticulture and urban gardening. The program has thus far saved the city $31,000 by composting 1.35 tons

of wasted food each day instead of paying landfill fees, according to Garvin. The effort diverts food waste from entering landfills or incinerators, he said. The compost is then put into the prison grounds and made into vegetable gardens and a fruit orchard. “One gentleman actually made all the signs that are at each end of the orchard, [describing] this row is pears, this row is apples... It’s tremendous work they’re doing,â€? said Garvin. On Thursday, Acting Prison Commissioner Michael Resnick accepted an award on behalf of the prison system from the EPA’s National Food Recovery Program Challenge. The program incentivizes organizations to improve their sustain-

able food management practices and report their results to the EPA. This includes how materials are extracted, manufactured, distributed, used, reused, recycled and disposed. Philly won second place in the category of innovation. “The PPS is very proud of the work that has been done in the effort of making our campus and our world cleaner by way of our composting project, orchard project and the green jobs training component, where inmates are building important skills in the emerging field of green jobs provided by Temple University,â€? said Resnick. “We would like to thank everyone involved in the program, including the officers assigned, the inmates workers and our partners from Temple University.â€? PHILADELPHIA

YES, BLACK LIVES MATTER, NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT IT I’m black and I definitely believe that systemic racial injustice has embarrassed the progress America has made elsewhere. Mass incarceration, reported cases of police brutality and economic/social inequality for black Americans should be spoken about loudly and in public. But there is a difference between protesting and insulting. It is one thing to inform versus simply speaking out the side of your neck. The Black Lives Matter Movement in Philadelphia (BLM), once known for their ability to address serious social justice issues in the city, are no longer strategic, intelligent or mature in their methods of raising consciousness. In the past, I have defended many of their protests. I backed them when they spoke out at this year’s Mummers Parade when some of the tropes’ blackface performers offended members of the community. Last year’s #SayHerName rally outside of City Hall was a brilliant way of challenging sexism within the movement while calling for justice for slain black educator Sandra Bland. But this week, on the one-year anniversary of the death of 25-year-old

THE ERNEST OPINION

ERNEST OWENS @MrErnestOwens

Freddie Gray, who died from sustained injuries while in police custody, Philly’s BLM has taken a disappointing turn. “Don’t vote for Hillary, she’s killing black people,â€? they chanted during a Center City demonstration down Market Street on Tuesday. Some of the members held signs that had the words “KKKillary Clintonâ€? while also having images of black lives who have died under police custody. This mixed association of talking about Freddie Gray and Clinton didn’t make any sense to me. For someone who wanted to mourn the death of another unfortunate lost life, blanket statements that interjected current presidential nominees was a complete distraction. Such a tone-deaf approach carried out at a Hillary Clinton rally in Philadelphia on Wednesday. I was sitting on the stage as I saw a handful of them attempt to disrupt the rally with placards that said, “You’re Not Welcome Hereâ€? and “Stop

Killing Black People.â€? Arguably, this is in reference to the 1994 Crime Bill that several justice scholars are now holding responsible for offsetting current mass incarceration trends in America. While first lady, Clinton lobbied for the bill her husband would sign into law. But retroactively lobbying a troublesome bill as the first lady and being called a mass murderer for doing so isn’t a fair assertion.  Philadelphia magazine reported that the protesters told a black security guard, “Old master got you out here?â€? as they were being taken out. This level of disrespect continued after the event as one of my black colleagues who also attended was taunted with other insensitive remarks about their blackness and political support of Hillary. The protesters called Clinton a â€œslave masterâ€? and black supporters, who were visibly disgusted, â€œhouse slaves.â€? I’ve had just about enough with seeing black activists from this movement taint social justice and history with divisive politics. Philly’s BLM has now turned off potential black supporters with a new agenda and tactics that make the group look more like a hashtag and less a stable coalition.

The case raised the debate over whether technology companies’ encryption technologies protect privacy or endanger the public by blocking law enforcement access to information. FBI Director James Comey said Thursday the agency paid more to get into the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters than he will make in the remaining seven years and four months he has in his job. According to figures from the FBI and the federal Office of Management and Budget,

Comey’s annual salary as of January 2015 was $183,300. Without a raise or bonus, Comey will make $1.34 million over the remainder of his job. That suggests the FBI paid the largest publicized amount for a hacking technique. The most previously paid was $1 million by U.S. information security company Zerodium to break into phones. Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in London, Comey was asked by a moderator how much the FBI paid for the software that eventually cracked the iPhone. â€œA lot. More than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four

months, for sure,â€? Comey said. “But it was, in my view, worth it.â€? The Justice Department said in March it had unlocked the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone with the help of an unidentified third party and dropped its case against Apple Inc., ending a high-stakes legal clash but leaving the broader fight over encryption unresolved. Comey said the FBI will be able to use software used on the San Bernardino phone on other 5C iPhones running iOS 9 software. The FBI gained access to the iPhone used by Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, on Dec. 2. REUTERS

Judge: Ashley Madison plaintiffs cannot sue anonymously over hack Plaintiffs leading a lawsuit against online dating website Ashley Madison over a security breach that exposed the personal data of customers must publicly identify themselves to proceed with the case, a U.S. judge has ruled. Forty-two plaintiffs, seeking to represent users of the website who had their information compromised, had proceeded anonymously against Ashley Madison’s Toronto-based parent company Avid Life Media, the ruling released on April 6 showed. The plaintiffs are suing Ashley Madison, a website that facilitates extramarital affairs, for failing to adequately secure their information, marketing a “Full Delete Removal service that did not work, and using fake female

accounts to lure male customers, according to the ruling. Their action comes after hackers who claimed to be unhappy with Avid Life’s business practices publicly released Ashley Madison customer data last August. Reuters has not independently verified the authenticity of the data, emails or documents. Judge John A. Ross, of a district court in Missouri, wrote in his ruling that being publicly named as an Ashley Madison user

amounts to more than common embarrassment, but noted the 42 plaintiffs have special roles in the case that require identification. The plaintiffs are “class representativesâ€? and may need to testify or offer evidence, unlike “class members,â€? those in the lawsuit who do not need participate as actively, Ross wrote. He ruled that the plaintiffs must either identify themselves or proceed as class members, who can remain anonymous. The “classâ€? for the collective lawsuit has not yet been certified, the ruling noted. There are at least 10 plaintiffs who are publicly named. Avid Media did not immediately respond to a request for comment. REUTERS

Trevor Noah takes over Philly Trevor Noah will be doing stand-up at SugarHouse Casino April 23 at 9 p.m.

The “Daily Show” star brings his act to SugarHouse Casino this Sunday. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

By the time summer ends, Philadelphia should be pretty sick of Trevor Noah. First there’s his stand-up comic gig at SugarHouse Casino on Sunday, April 23. Then,

the South African comedian — who took over as host of “The Daily Show” from late-night darling Jon Stewart in 2015 — will camp out at University City’s Annenberg Center in July for Comedy Central’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention. We caught up with the 32-year-old during his lunch break in New York City to talk about his flawless Ben Carson impression as well as his response to “Daily Show”

fans who miss Jon Stewart.

You started your career in stand-up in South Africa. What’s the main difference between doing stand-up there versus here? There are more similarities than differences when it comes to standup between the two. The biggest difference, though, is that because comedy is fresh and

THE FUN STARTS HERE new in South Africa, the audience is a lot harder to offend. Have you done standup in South Africa since you’ve moved to the States? Yes, I still do comedy all over the world. Whenever we’re off for a week, I try to travel. You began your career in radio and acting gigs. How did you evolve into comedy? I think I’ve always been a comedian. I just didn’t know then that stand-up would eventually be my home. Every other job that I had in the entertainment business helped me express being funny, but each in a different way.

knd

You started at “The Daily Show” as an occasional contributor in 2014. Was

there any indication that you were being groomed for anything other than what you were doing? Not at all. I just loved telling jokes about the world around us and I loved working with Jon. Everything else was a surprise. You made “The Daily Show” your own from the start of your tenure. How do you think its going? Well, it’s a very hard and long process and I’m still working on it every day that I’m there. But, from the get-go, I knew that replacing Jon Stewart would be impossible. That’s why I don’t ever try to do that. Instead, I just try to improve being me. Was there ever any pressure to hang onto the old way things were done on the show? There’s always resistance to change, no matter what you’re changing. I just have to believe that I have something new to offer and so I must focus on that.

You do a hell of a sleepy Ben Carson impersonation. How much do you miss him as a presidential candidate? Ben Carson will always be in my heart or on my brain. What do you say to people who miss Jon Stewart? I tell them that I totally understand because I miss him, too. And that just because you like me doesn’t mean you have to stop liking Jon. You can like burgers and pizza at the same time. Knowing that you write much of what “The Daily Show” is on a nightly basis, how and what do you save for stand-up? Luckily, there’s a ton of weird things or topics that never make it into the television broadcast. Stand-up is the perfect format for those pieces, so I’m good. Is there one motto that you try to live your life by? Imagine that you won the lottery — what would you do differently in your

The power of Prince We’ve lost a legend. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

The entertainment world mourns a great loss as Prince was announced dead in Minnesota at 57 on Thursday. The icon of icons is attributed with an endless string of hits (“When Doves Cry,” “Purple Rain, “Let’s Go Crazy”) as well as creating hits for others (writing “Manic Monday,” and “Nothing Compares to U,” lending his slicks to “Like a Prayer”). And you’ll be hard-pressed to find an artist (music, fashion, film or otherwise) who doesn’t shortlist the Purple One as one of their biggest influences. Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1958, put his midwestern city on the music map, following a 1980 performance on “Ameri-

can Bandstand.” When host Dick Clark was shocked by the then-19year-old’s unique chops, he huffed, “This is not the kind of music that

comes from Minneapolis, Minnesota.” But it was. Prince’s synth-heavy blend of electro-pop, new wave, funk and rock known as

the “Minnesota Sound” — influenced countless others such as Mark Ronson, Janet Jackson and Bruno Mars. As a fashion icon, a feminist and a filmmaker, it’s impossible to capture what made Prince so uniquely, importantly and unapologetically Prince. But perhaps the best way to sum up Prince is as the all-knowing cultivator of all that is cool. In fact, he said it best himself. “Cool means being able to hang with yourself. All you have to ask yourself is, ‘Is there anybody I’m afraid of ? Is there anybody who if I walked into a room and saw, I’d get nervous?’ If not, then you’re cool.” We are all a little less cool without him. RIP Prince. We paid tribute to the Purple One by compiling five of his most epic live performances at Metro.us.

18 WKND After six seasons on “Game of Thrones,” Liam Cunningham has mastered the art of vagueness. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Game of no spoilers

At a recent “Game of Thrones” event in New York City, actor Liam Cunningham is rolling a cigarette — while doing an interview. He’s sitting in a director’s chair opposite a journalist, who is dutifully asking him all the questions that fans of the fantasy show want the answers to. What will his character, Ser Davos, do now that his king and friend Stannis Baratheon is dead? Is Jon Snow alive? Will the red priestess Melisandre use magic to bring him back? Cunningham, 54, deflects with a combination of six seasons’ training in politely vague answers and Liam Cunningham Irish charm. GETTY IMAGES

does. It does not give you a get-out-of-jail-free card to be morally ambiguous when dealing with people’s lives. And we reflect that in the show, and that’s one of the things I find incredibly interesting.

“Game of Thrones” returns Sunday night at 9 p.m. on HBO. HELEN SLOAN, HBO

The interviewer is almost not disappointed that all he’s basically divulged is that Ser Davos is “despondent” over the loss of his king, who had turned him from a smuggler into a knight. As for

what’s to come, that’ll have to wait until this Sunday, when the show returns at 9 p.m. on HBO. We asked him a few questions anyway. In a show full of immoral characters, how do you feel about playing one of the few good ones? It’s incredibly important from a storytelling point of view. As you say, you have these morally ambiguous characters — I don’t think you can mess with them too much,

otherwise the whole thing becomes anarchic. And I think it’s incredibly important that you have a couple of good people — there’s a few of us there, Jon Snow is one even though he had to do a couple of beheadings and stuff. You’ve also got John Bradley with Samwell Tarly, he’s a good guy. We’re interspersed, but we have to give some sort of moral backbone. People want somebody to do the right thing. It is interesting that it’s

the soldiers who tend to be the ones who tread a righteous path, not the characters with the luxury of having their own morals. It’s not the soldiers, it’s the thinkers. In a sense, “Game of Thrones” is an examination of power and the corruption of power and legacy and family and paranoia. And those things are a cancer — they can turn good men bad. Political expediency does not give one an excuse to be bad, although some politicians seem to think it

This is the first season that the show’s plot has passed the books. Do the cast speculate among yourselves about what’s going to happen? Yeah, we do it all the time, the gossiping is fantastic! We get little tidbits, people give us little things, but sometimes they throw in a McGuffin, a little red herring and kinda go, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, he’s gonna die this year” and they’re coming back. And it’s all BS — the two guys, [showrunners] David [Benioff ] and Dan [Weiss] do terrible things to the actors just to watch the speculation, watch the ripples flow through the cast. It’s funny, it’s really funny. But we play the game. Since it’s obviously pretty pointless to ask you to say what does happen, one fun question: Ser Davos is known as the Onion Knight — do you yourself like onions? I love onions. If I was ever trapped on a desert island, a couple of eggs, probably a few tomatoes, and you’ve gotta have an onion. There’s very little worth eating that doesn’t contain onions.

Is Boxed Water really better?

Boxed Water’s cartons are 100 percent recyclable.

We take a look at the box vs. bottle debate. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

emily.laurence@metro.us

Go to a music festival or Fashion Week event, and chances are you’ll see Boxed Water right next to the green juices and coconut chips. But is it just a marketing gimmick or is it a genius environmental solution to plastic bottle waste?

Pros When we met with Boxed Water Chief Operating Officer David Lee, he stressed the brand’s environmental commitment. “The entire carton is recyclable, and 76 percent of the box is made of paper from well-managed

forests, he tells us. Lee says recycling paper creates less of a carbon footprint: Recycling plastic takes three times more carbon dioxide than paper. And, unlike paper, plastic and glass never fully decompose. The company is also strategic about shipping: Shipping the cartons flat to the plants to be filled means fewer trips. One pallet can hold about 35,000 empty cartons. And instead of just one filling plant (with the water), there are two, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast, to cut down on transportation distances between the distributors and consumers.

Still, we can’t overlook that most people don’t

Earth Day action This Earth Day, Boxed Water is putting its Instagram readiness to good use. Every time someone posts a photo of the product on social media with the hashtag #Retree, Boxed Water will plant two trees as part of a partnership with the National Forest Foundation and 1% for the Planet. Their goal is to plant one million trees by the year 2020. “It’s about giving back to the two things behind our product, paper and water, Lee tells us.

recycle. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, only 34 percent of Americans do. That said, paper is recycled slightly more than other materials: 27 percent of recycled material is paper, 13 percent is plastic and 5 percent is glass. Also, drinking water out of a paper carton still does not beat a reusable water bottle when it comes to being environmentally forward.

Why it’s time to start paying attention to Philadelphia Union The Union are off to one of the best starts in MLS. JEFF MCMENAMIN @Jeff_McMenamin sports@metro.us

As the hype reached its peak in the past few weeks following the amazing playoff run by the Flyers and the hot start to the season from the Phillies pitching staff, it was easy for the Union to be the odd man out in the Philadelphia sports landscape. Now that the Flyers trail their series 3-1 and the Phillies pitching staff has gone cold, it’s time for all eyes to start focusing on Chester and Talen Energy Stadium, where the Union have had one of the

hottest starts of the MLS season through the first six matches. The Union (3-3-0) sit in second place in the Eastern Conference in the young season, on the backs of one of their strongest defensive units in club history. Goalie Andre Blake currently ranks sixth in the MLS in save percentage (78.1) and as a unit the team has allowed just seven goals, tied for third in the East. Blake has started in all six matches for the Union, registering 32 saves on 25 shots. He’s already totaled the same amount of starts he had all of last season, while guiding the Union to one more win and with a better goals against average (1.17). “Andre [Blake’s] been excellent,â€? manager Jim

Curtin said. “In every game he’s had a special save. He’s done that in our wins and in our losses to keep us in games. It gives our center backs confidence and it gives our team confidence that we can be aggressive as a team and Andre will be there to make the save he’s supposed to make as well as the special ones that keep you in a game.â€? Up next for the Union are New York City FC (12-3) led by potent goal scorer and international legend, David Villa. Villa ranks ninth in the MLS in scoring with four goals on the season. The Union are hoping they can limit Villa’s impact on the match by sticking rookie Joshua Yaro on him for the majority of the match. In the Union’s 2-1 loss

The Union’s next home match, this Saturday at 4 p.m., will be nationally broadcast on ABC. GETTY IMAGES

to the Seattle Sounders (2-3-1) on Saturday, Yaro had the tough assignment of sticking national star Clint Dempsey and held him to no goals on just three shots. Curtin talked about the second overall pick’s potential matchup this weekend. â€œ[It’s] no easy task,â€? Curtin said about Villa.

“Villa does a good job whether he’s the high guy as the No. 9 as a target or whether he plays out wide and he comes in at your blind spot on the shoulder. He’s as clever a goal scorer as there’s been in our game and lives kind of on the edge. As a team, NYCFC has played poorly of late

1Wbg

which could work in the Union’s favor. They haven’t won a match since their first game of the season and are coming off of a 3-2 loss to the bottom-dwelling Columbus Crew (1-3-2). The Union return to Chester for Saturday’s match. The match will air at 4 p.m. on ABC.Â

Flyers looking to cultivate yet another Capitals playoff collapse How do you overcome a 3-1 deficit? Wayne Simmonds says to take it shift by shift. “Make everything in small increments,” the Flyers winger told the media Thursday. “We got to go out there and we got to work harder than them the next shift, then go shift to shift to shift. Then when that period’s over it’s kind of like you’re starting the new game with the new period. Obviously we can’t look big picture. We got to look small picture and that’s the way that we’re going to climb back into this.” Flyers fans no doubt see it differently. They see some light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, it’s a monumental sports feat that has been completed just a handful of times. But the Capitals have shown they are beatable. The Flyers have won four games in a row twice this season and Washington has been known to

crumble in the postseason. Anything could happen, right? “I think we get a little confidence knowing that we can beat them and knowing that we can play as a team,” Giroux, who had an assist in Wednesday’s 2-1 Game 4 win, said. “We know we’re in a tough spot right now and we need to keep playing the way we

did last game. It’s good to know we can be successful playing the way we want to play.” Game 5 starts at 7 p.m. Friday night in Washington and there will certainly be some urgency on the part of the Caps to wrap things up before a possible Sunday Game 6 back in Philly. In eight of the last nine seasons the Capitals

finished first (six times) or second in their division. In each and every one of those postseasons, the Caps lost in either the first or second round. Can the Capitals keep it together and win one more game? “This isn’t a group that wants to stop any time soon,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said, “so right now you’re on a one-day basis: win and continue to move on. It’s probably a good scenario for us. I think we’ve been very good at short-term goals.” Like the endearing fans, Hakstol too is thinking maybe, just maybe they can strike fear into the Caps and force yet another playoff collapse. “I would imagine if we can push and bring this series back to a Game 6, maybe they may start feeling a little bit,” he said. “But I wouldn’t imagine that’s something that’s going through their minds right now.” EVAN MACY
