PARIS ATTACKS SUSPECT ABDESLAM EXTRADITED TO FRANCE

1

Salah Abdeslam, believed to be the sole survivor among a group of Islamist militants who killed 130 people in Paris in November, was extradited to France from Belgium on Wednesday. Abdeslam, 26, was Europe’s most wanted fugitive until his capture in Brussels on March 18 after a four-month manhunt. He was taken by helicopter to Paris under armed guard and then driven to the capital’s main law courts. French Justice Minister Jean-Jacques Urvoas said Abdeslam would be held in a high-security prison in the Paris region. His capture in March came four days before separate suicide bomb attacks by Islamist militants at Brussels international airport and on a metro train that killed 32 people. REUTERS

THREE DEAD, ONE WOUNDED IN MISSISSIPPI SHOOTINGS

Three people were killed and one critically wounded in shootings early Wednesday in north-central Mississippi, a Mississippi Bureau of Investigation official said. Multiple crime scenes are involved in the shootings in Montgomery County, about 100 miles north of Jackson, according to Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain. A person of interest was being interviewed and the Montgomery County sheriff is investigating, Strain said. No motive has yet been given for the shootings and authorities did not provide any information on the victims. The person who survived the shooting was airlifted to a hospital, Strain said. WCBI-TV, a CBS affiliate in northern Mississippi, reported that the incident happened at about 2 a.m., citing the county coroner. REUTERS

REAL ESTATE HEIR DURST GETS SEVEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR GUN CRIME

A New Orleans judge Wednesday sentenced real estate scion Robert Durst to seven years in prison for a federal gun crime and agreed to recommend that he serve his time in California, where he faces a murder charge in a friend’s 2000 death. The 73-year-old, who entered and left the courtroom in a wheelchair, had pleaded guilty to the gun charge in February. Speaking in a weak voice, he asked U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to speed his transfer to California, so he can defend himself in the death of writer Susan Berman. REUTERS

Boston cops rolling out body cameras amid blurry policy picture Lots of unknowns as city prepares for a pilot program. SPENCER BUELL @MetroSpencer

spencer.buell@metro.us

This much we know: For the first time, this year Boston police officers will begin wearing body cameras — equipment attached to a cop’s uniform that can be flipped on and off. The city plans to equip 100 officers — about one in 20 officers — with the cameras for six months beginning in May or June as part of a pilot program. Police departments around the country have begun testing and using body cameras as a way to record what happens during an arrest or traffic stop. Calls for more widespread use of body cameras intensified after police-involved shootings in Baltimore, New York and other cities. But even as Bostonians got the chance to weigh in at a series of informal public meetings this week, exactly how those cameras will be used is still unclear. “We’re asking all these questions about the pilot and people don’t have answers,” said Segun Idowu, co-organizer of the Boston Police Camera Action Team, which has been advocating for the cameras since 2014. “And we’re a month away.” Among them: Will police will be allowed to film inside people’s homes? Will footage of situations involving domestic abuse, children or the mentally ill be taken? where, how and for how long, will all the police-camera data will be stored? But the chief concern from BPCAT and others is that results of the pilot may be tainted. That’s because right now the only officers who will wear the

cameras are those who volunteer to do so. The “data will be skewed,” Idowu said, because “only the officers who are doing really, really great work” will sign up for the pilot, Idowu said. “And not the officers that we’re trying to hold accountable.” But there’s nothing policymakers or police leadership can do about that, said City Councilor Andrea Campbell,

her will without negotiating that policy into the police union contract. The city has set aside $500,000 for the pilot. Campbell estimated this week that it would actually cost less than $200,000 to implement. In the future, Campbell said she hopes the city will adopt a permanent body-camera program and that participation in the future will not be voluntary. In the meantime, she said she’s learned a lot from community meetings and has taken “pages and pages of notes” on residents’ concerns and ideas. She’ll take those suggestions to her fellow councilors at a formal hearing next week.

“The two words I heard were ‘sham’ and ‘charade’ from folks,” he said, adding, “My thing is, how can residents give feedback on a policy they haven’t been introduced to?” Another concern as the pilot start date nears, said Idowu, is Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, who is working with a social-justice task force to run the pilot. Evans has said he does not believe his officers need the cameras. “I know the momentum is for everyone having them, although I don’t really think we need them,” Evans said in a recent interview with Boston Herald Radio. “I think we’ve shown what kind of a class-act department we are, but we are going to give them a try and see if the results are positive.” Those comments made Idowu “nervous,” he said, that the pilot won’t get a fair shot. But overall, he said, he’s optimistic. “At the end of the day, I believe the cameras are coming no matter what,” he said.

Idowu said he was happy with the community involvement leading up to the pilot but had strong words for this week’s meetings, which he criticized because there isn’t a draft policy to debate.

Man arrested in hit-and-run, assault that left two injured Buildings in what may soon be known as the “Latin Quarter” DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

Council OKs ‘Latin Quarter’ title for Jamaica Plain neighborhood Boston took one step closer to dubbing a corner of Jamaica Plain the city’s “Latin Quarter.” The City Council voted in favor of the designation on Wednesday for the Hyde-Jackson Square area. In addition to recognizing the neighborhood’s cultural flair and ties to Latin America, the move would let the area organize to apply for certain grants and, advocates hope, could

make it a draw for tourism dollars. “It’s recognizing and allowing for a designation of, really, a celebration” of the Latin community in Boston, said Councilor Matt O’Malley, the lead sponsor of the change, citing the area’s many small businesses that have been family owned for generations. Long a destination for new arrivals to the city, thousands of migrants from Central America,

South America and the Caribbean began arriving at the stretch of JP in the mid-1900s, according to the resolution O’Malley presented Wednesday, and the community has continued to grow over the last 20 years. Youth with the Hyde Square Task Force have been advocating for the designation. The proposal now needs Mayor Marty Walsh’s signature. SPENCER BUELL

A suspect was in custody after two people were injured in Cambridge in a Wednesday morning hitand-run and pistol-whipping, police said. Authorities initially responded to a Pearl Street hit-and-run around 8:12 a.m., Cambridge police stated. A victim had been dragged by a Dodge Charger following an altercation with the driver in Central Square.

Police said that a second person, found with the dragging victim, had been pistol-whipped. Authorities recovered a firearm that witnesses said was discarded from the suspect’s vehicle. The two victims, both with nonlife-threatening injuries, were taken to an area hospital, CBS Boston added. Part of Pearl Street was also taped off.

Authorities determined that the driver and the hit-and-run victim knew each other, Cambridge police stated. Police identified the suspect taken into custody as Joekeem Nelson, 20, from Cambridge. He now faces multiple charges including armed assault with intent to murder, firearm possession, and assault and battery.

A Plymouth man has died after authorities said he suffered two heroin overdoses in less than 12 hours. The victim, 43, was found by his mother during an overdose around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at his apartment, the Boston Herald reported. After authorities arrived and administered Narcan to combat the overdose, he was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.

He checked himself out of the hospital Friday morning and was found again by his mother having an overdose around 8:30 a.m., the Herald reported. He was again taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. At the time of his second overdose, police were headed to his home as part of a program in which authorities check on patients within a day

of an overdose, WCVB stated, but they arrived too late. “We’ve had some people get Narcanned two or three times in a couple of days. But I can’t think of one where we had them overdose, he was Narcanned, left the hospital and overdosed that quickly. That seems to be unprecedented,” Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri told the Herald.

BRIEF Man found dead at Apple headquarters in California An Apple Inc. employee has been found dead in a conference room at the company’s headquarters in Northern California, police said Wednesday, calling it an “isolated incident” that did not involve any other victims or suspects. Sgt. Andrea Urena of the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office told reporters at a press conference that deputies were

called to Apple’s main offices in the Silicon Valley community of Cupertino at 8:35 a.m. PDT. “When deputies responded to the campus they found one individual male down and determined he was deceased,” Urena said. “Further investigation determined that no other individuals were involved. We believe this to be an isolated incident and that nobody else on campus or in the public is at

risk,” she said. Urena said Santa Clara County Coroner investigators would conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. She said authorities were not searching for any suspects. The San Jose Mercury News, citing emergency dispatch calls, reported initial calls to police reported a man with a head wound. The paper and other local

media said according to the dispatch audio the unidentified victim was found in a conference room with a gun. Urena declined to comment on those reports at the press conference. Apple, which Tuesday reported its first decline in iPhone sales and its first revenue drop in 13 years, did not immediately respond to requests by Reuters for comment. REUTERS

Ex-House Speaker Hastert admits sex abuse, gets 15 months in prison Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, once one of the country’s most powerful politicians, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in federal prison for a financial crime related to sexual abuse of high school wrestlers he coached decades ago. U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Durkin called Hastert a serial sex abuser in handing down the sentence, which was longer than the zero to six months recommended by federal prosecutors. Durkin said the sentence would have been even longer if it weren’t for Hastert’s age, 74, and poor health. Frail and clinging to a walker, Hastert apologized for sexually abusing boys when he was a teacher and coach in his hometown of Yorkville. “I’m sorry to those I hurt and misled. I wanted to apologize for the boys I mistreated,” Hastert told Durkin at the two-hour sentencing hearing in federal court in Chicago. The judge asked him if he acknowledged sexual abuse of his victims and Hastert said he did. Hastert, the longestserving Republican

House speaker in history and a successful international lobbyist who was earning $75,000 a month, pleaded guilty last October to the crime of structuring, which involves withdrawing a large sum of money in small increments to avoid detection. He needed the cash after he reached a secret agreement with one of his five sexual abuse victims to pay him $3.5 million in compensation for pain and suffering. The judge said even though Hastert could not be charged with sex abuse because the statute of limitations had run out, he could take the conduct into consideration at sentencing. “Some conduct is unforgivable no matter how old it is. The abuse was 40 years ago but the damage lasts today,” Durkin said. Hastert’s defense had asked for a probation-only sentence, arguing that his shame and humiliation were punishment enough. His portrait has been removed from the Capitol and his alma mater, Wheaton College in Illinois, stripped his name from a public policy center. REUTERS

Half of Americans think nominating process is ‘rigged’: poll The results echo complaints from Donald Trump that system is stacked against him in favor of candidates with close ties to their parties. More than half of American voters believe the system political parties use to pick their candidates for the White House is “rigged,” and more than two-thirds want to see the process changed, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The United States is one of just a handful of countries that gives regular voters any say in who should make it onto the presidential ballot. But the state-by-state system of primaries, caucuses and

conventions is complex. The contests historically were always party events, and while the popular vote has grown in influence since the mid-20th century, the parties still have considerable sway. One quirk of the U.S. system — and the area in which parties get to their muscle — is the use of delegates, party members who are assigned to sup-

port contenders at their respective conventions, usually based on voting results. The parties decide how delegates are awarded in each state. Republicans and Democrats have different rules. The delegates’ personal opinions can come into play at the party conventions if the race is too close to call — an issue that has become a lightning rod in the this political season. Another complication is that state governments have different rules about whether voters must be registered as party members to participate. In some states, parties further restrict delegate selection to small committees of party elites, as the Republican Party in Colorado did this year. REUTERS

Republican front-runner Donald Trump vowed on Wednesday to seek better relations with Russia and China if elected president in November and said he would make U.S. allies bear more of the financial burden for their defense. In a major speech, Trump delivered a withering critique of Barack Obama’s foreign policy, saying the Democratic president has let China take advantage of the United States and has failed to defeat Islamic State militants. He pledged to “shake the rust off America’s foreign policy.” The New York billionaire spoke the day after victories in five Northeastern states that moved him closer to capturing the Republican Party presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election. With U.S.-Russian relations strained over numerous issues including Mos-

cow’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Trump said “an easing of tensions with Russia from a position of strength” is possible. “China respects strength and by letting them take advantage of us economically we have lost all their respect,” he said. Trump said he would call separate summits of NATO and Asian allies to discuss a “rebalancing” of the U.S. financial commitment to their defense. He was stern in charging that American allies have benefited from a U.S. defense umbrella but have not paid their fair share. “The countries we defend must pay for the cost

of this defense. If not, the U.S. must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves. We have no choice,” Trump said. Trump, a reality TV star, has never held elected office and has built support with a no-nonsense style and populist pledges to “make America great again.” He set aside his rancorous campaign rhetoric for his address on foreign policy, delivered at a downtown Washington hotel. Trump usually speaks in an off-the-cuff manner, but he delivered Wednesday’s speech with the aid of a teleprompter as he sought to make himself appealing to more Republican voters. REUTERS

BRIEF Report: Cruz to name Fiorina as his running mate U.S. Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Wednesday was expected to announce that former business executive Carly Fiorina will be his vice presidential running mate if he wins his party’s nomination, ABC affiliate WMUR reported, citing unnamed sources. The report by WMUR, an ABC station in Manchester, New Hampshire, followed a statement from Cruz that he would make a major announcement at a 4 p.m. EDT rally. He gave no further details. Fiorina, 61, endorsed Cruz, a 45-year-old senator from Texas, for the nomination in March, one month after dropping out of the Republican race herself. The announcement of a running mate at this point in the campaign would be unusually early. Traditionally, the winners of the Republican and Democratic nominating contests announce their running mates for November’s general election at their parties’ summer national conventions. Picking a running mate could be seen as part of a bid by Cruz to recover from Tuesday’s crushing loss to Trump, who swept party nominating contests in five Northeastern states. REUTERS

BRIEF High warranty costs reect Tesla’s struggle with quality Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has told investors his electric car company will stop burning cash and turn a proďŹ t this year, and corralling costs associated with quality problems will be critical to making good on that pledge. While Tesla has trimmed its average warranty repair cost per premium electric vehicle since 2014, it still spends more than twice as much as General Motors

and Ford Motor Co., according to analysis of company data. Tesla’s warranty costs are also higher than those of Germany’s Daimler AG, maker of MercedesBenz luxury cars. Tesla and other automakers don’t reveal speciďŹ c ďŹ gures for warranty costs per vehicle, but they do disclose vehicle deliveries, and total spending for warranty repairs and accruals, representing money set aside for future warranty repair work.Â

Last year, according to a Reuters analysis of data provided in the company’s annual report, Tesla spent $1,043 per vehicle on actual repairs and set aside $2,036 in warranty accruals to cover future repairs on the vehicles it sold in 2015. It trimmed warranty expenses by 17 percent from 2014 and cut warranty accruals by 34 percent. Meanwhile, GM spent just $400 last year for every vehicle it sold on warranty repairs and set

aside $332 for future work. Ford spent $429 per vehicle and set aside $308. Daimler spent $970 per vehicle and set aside $1,294. While Tesla builds only two models and last year sold just 50,000 vehicles, GM, Ford and Daimler all have widely disparate product lines and sell millions of vehicles a year. And where Tesla’s 2015 revenue was just over $4 billion, the three larger automakers reported revenues of $150 billion and more. REUTERS

Apple stocks slump, but some analysts still say “buy. GETTY IMAGES

Amid talk of ‘peak iPhone,’ Apple’s prospects hinge on next model Ask Siri if iPhone 7 will be the answer to Apple Inc.’s problems, and you’re told that a visit to Apple’s website should answer that question “and more. If only it was that easy. Apple’s shares were down 7.7 percent at $96.30 in early trading and were set for their biggest one-day fall in more than two years, a day after the company reported its first-ever fall in smartphone sales, arousing talk of “peak iPhone. For many analysts, the company’s immediate future rests with iPhone 7, which Apple is expected to launch in September. “If iPhone 7 doesn’t surprise with meaningful new useful features, we worry that consumers won’t upgrade, Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter wrote in a note to clients. “And unfortunately, nothing that we’ve seen about iPhone 7 thus far strikes us as particularly innovative, said Schachter, who cut his price target to $112 from $117 while maintaining his “outperform rating on the stock. The iPhone 7 is expected to sport a new

look with features such as waterproofing, wireless headphones and force touch as the home button. But many wonder if that will be enough to entice users to dump their existing iPhones or switch from the Android-based phones that have come to dominate the smartphone market. Goldman Sachs removed Apple from its conviction list after Apple’s results and said it expected the company’s shares to remain weak until the market gets more comfortable with the prospects for iPhone 7. Goldman was among at least 16 brokerages that cut price outlooks on Apple’s stock, cutting its target to $136 from $155 while retaining a “buy rating. Of the 46 analysts covering the stock, 37 rate it “buy or the equivalent. The median price target is $122, according to Reuters data. Apple usually launches new iPhones in September and sells the most devices in the December quarter. Unit sales typically drop over the next few quarters, picking up after the next iPhone launch. Peace in our time: It could really be a possibility, if this recent brunch meeting between Kim Kardashian and brother Rob Kardashian and his fiancee, Blac Chyna, is anything to go by. The trio hit up comfort-food emporium Nate & Al’s for some carbs and happy talking, according to E! News, and to hear a source on the scene tell it, everything was just oh-so-very-nice. “Kim and them were just sitting at a booth and they looked like they were having a good time,” the source says. “They were talking directly to each other, not looking away or anything, so they were engaged in a conversation, all of them. Everyone seemed happy and they were really nice.” So there’s that.

eight years was spotted in Miami Tuesday, puffing on a cigar on a private patio. So how did he look? Scared? Chastened? Like he was avoiding any and all girls named Becky? It’s actually hard to tell, given his famously inscrutable face. But still, smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em.

most-nominated woman in Grammys history, and she’s already been nominated for an Emmy twice, but the news this week that HBO has submitted “Lemonade” for Emmy consideration pretty much means she’s going to win one, right? That’s like “Hamilton” getting a nomination for any award, period. Even though “Lemonade” was only available on HBO and its on-demand services for 27 hours, it’s still apparently Emmyseligible, which is great. She’s got one Oscar nomination under her belt, but nothing on the Tonys front — yet. Anybody else thinking a live “Lemonade” stage show on Broadway is in order?

Supermodels: They’re just like us! Gisele Bundchen’s history of rejection should make you feel better about yourself, right? Well, it probably doesn’t, what with her still being Gisele Bundchen and all, but still, dig this: The supermodel tells People that early in her career, it was a real struggle, OK? She was rejected an eerily specific 42 times before landing a Vogue cover in 1999. “I remember some people telling me my nose was too big or my eyes were too small, that I could never be on a magazine cover,” she says. “It wasn’t easy to be 14 and hear that kind of criticism. It made me feel insecure.” What she doesn’t realize is that normal 14-year-olds are perfectly capable of feeling insecure all by themselves without someone saying they’re not quite beautiful enough for the cover. But thanks for trying to be relatable!

Perhaps ‘Game of Thrones’ is back on track Can “Game of Thronesâ€? recapture its former glory? The ďŹ rst episode of Season 6 seems to tell us it can. My history with the show actually started with the books, which I started reading when they ďŹ rst came out on the recommendation of a friend. He told me that I’d “throw the book across the room once I ďŹ nished it.â€? Fans know that a certain character who seemed to be the hero was killed at the end of book one. There is still a dent in my wall, though I can’t do that now that I read on a Kindle. When the show premiered, I was thrilled that it didn't temper the brutality of the books. Nothing was sugar-coated, and the women were as savage as the men. Despite suering oppression in their society, they were as strong, if not stronger, than the men. Flawed and well-drawn,

they weren’t paragons of virtue. The show showed us that as well. Then the last two seasons happened, notably with the rapes that were not in the books. There was Cersei being abused by Jamie, and Sansa getting the same treatment from her husband, Ramsay Bolton. Please note that the latter storyline made sense, but the ďŹ lming of the horror it caused Theon — but not Sansa — was so misguided that I was barely able to ďŹ nish the ďŹ fth season. I’m not alone in that. Frankly, outside of that, the rest of the episodes were pretty freaking boring — unforgivable for a TV series. It does, however, appear that the women reign this season. The scene where Brienne swears loyalty to Sansa brought me to tears. If this is truly the end of the long lead-up to Sansa gaining power, I may be able to hold

It finally happened: The cold lifted and the sun warmed brittle Bostonian bods, and chairs and tables sprouted mushroomlike on bar, cafe and restaurant patios around town. More places will join the al fresco season fun, including these new patios debuting this season. In the heart of the South End, Banyan Bar + Refuge took over the Hamersley’s Bistro spot and inherited its amazing patio overlooking Tremont Street. Plans are to open up the outdoor space for the season on May 1 for both dinner and a recently added weekend brunch. (553 Tremont St., Boston. 617-556-4211. www. banyanboston.com). For an urban experience, Coppersmith in South Boston is housed in a former a copper foundry, the Dahlquist Manufacturing Co., and marks its first spring and summer with extensive outdoor space. In addition to a street-level patio, there’s a rooftop deck with a vintage airstream trailer converted into a bar. The so-called AirDeck has a special bar

Beer me: Jack’s Abby House Lager Sports fandom can make otherwise reasonable adults do silly things, like develop a chaste but abiding concern for the condition of a stranger’s groin, or spend $9.75 on a waxed-paper cup of Bud Light. I try not to complain about ballpark beer prices, but this is shaping up to be a long, dispiriting year at Fenway Park for Red Sox fans; it’s fair to ask just how “optional beer is for anyone sitting through four hours of another 12-9 loss. The Sox made three major acquisitions, two on the mound and one in the concession stands: Neither starting pitcher David Price nor closer Craig Kimbrell have lived up to the hype so far, so thank goodness for Jack’s Abby House Lager, the beer that just may save the

season. Fenway has long been a beer desert, but things have been looking up. The introduction of this 5.2 percent alcoholby-volume German-style lager from Framingham is the strongest sign yet that management feels our pain. House Lager recently replaced the beloved Jabby Brau in Jack’s Abby’s year-round lineup, and I must admit that House is one of the smoothest, cleanest, easiestdrinking beers around. It’s bready and floral and balanced ever so slightly to the sweet side, with gently spicy note on the drier than expected finish. Jack’s Abby House Lager; $9.99 per six-pack of 16 ounce cans; $9.75 per can at Fenway. PROVIDED

TRAVEL

Taking the scenic route Don’t miss these picture-perfect New England towns on your summer road trip.

As summer approaches, sleepy towns across New England are beginning to wake up from hibernation. With flowers in bloom and leafy trees covering the mountains, summer is without doubt the best season to visit New England — and the only time to enjoy its pristine beaches. The region has plenty to offer outside of major cities like Boston and Providence, especially on the coast, where locals flock to relax on the beach, go biking and sailing, and enjoy the delicious seafood New England is known for. Starting in Connecticut and heading north to Maine, here are some of the most scenic destinations for summer fun, food, history and culture. LAURA ITZKOWITZ

Mystic, Connecticut Halfway between New York City and Boston,

Mystic has plenty of coastal attractions. The historic town is home to Mystic Seaport, the world’s largest maritime museum with more than 500 vessels, including a whaling ship. At the Mystic Aquarium, see New England’s only beluga whales — plus penguins, sea lions and plenty of other aquatic animals. Embrace the kitschy side of town at the Olde Mistick Village. Insider tip: Check out the spots featured in the 1988 movie “Mystic Pizza” that made Julia Roberts famous.

Lenox, Massachusetts Home to the Tanglewood Music Festival, Lenox exudes mountain charm unique to the Berkshires. Winding roads twist and turn, enveloped by verdant canopies that open onto spectacular views of the rolling valleys dotted with farmhouses. The main attraction is The Mount, Edith Wharton’s country estate. Built in 1902, Wharton designed it herself, emphasizing simplicity and harmony. Three acres of formal gardens complement the home, providing a beauti-

Newport, Rhode Island Gilded Age tycoons flocked to the charming seaside city of Newport to build their summer “cottages” at the turn of the century. With the arrival of the Vanderbilts came opulent mansions modeled on European palaces. The Breakers, designed by Richard Morris Hunt in the Italian Renaissance style, is the grandest, though Marble House, modeled on Le Petit Trianon at Versailles, set the tone for the rest. Though the mansions are Newport’s claim to fame, there’s plenty to do in this historic city. Insider tip: Every July, the Newport Music Festival puts on performances by world-class musicians at the mansions.

ful backdrop for a stroll. Insider Tip: A visit to MASS MoCA — the contemporary art museum in a complex of 19th-century factory buildings — is a must.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire This coastal city was originally settled in 1623 as Strawbery Banke, and its colonial legacy lives on at the Strawbery Banke Museum. This 10-acre living history museum proudly displays houses, gardens, shops and taverns from the 1600s and 1700s. In fact, the whole town is full of Colonial, Federal, Georgian and Victorian house museums. There are plenty of modern-day amusements too, from laid-back pubs serving local craft beer to a lively local music scene. Insider tip: For live music and theater, check out The Press Room, which hosts concerts most nights of the week, and The Music Hall, a Victorian-era venue.

Burlington, Vermont Compared to the state capital Montpelier, Burlington is a bustling metropolis, with a population of over 42,000 and a lively downtown area.

Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island

Here, in the city on Lake Champlain, you’ll find lots of artsy shops and galleries, craft vendors, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and bars. It’s also home to the Magic Hat brewery, which offers tours and tastings, as well as Lake Champlain Chocolates. Insider tip: For an excellent meal, go to Hen of the Wood, one of Vermont’s best restaurants.

ISTOCK

Bar Harbor, Maine The cultural and culinary hub of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is beloved for its rugged, natural beauty. Waves crash against the granite cliffs, mountains rise above the sea and lighthouses guide ships to safety. It was the summer destination of choice for Brooke Astor

and generations of Rockefellers, and the main streets are full of quaint clapboard shops selling local arts and crafts. Don’t miss the lobster; Abel’s Lobster Pound is a local favorite. Insider tip: If you’re heading to Acadia National Park, start at the Park Loop Road and wander off the beaten path for hiking, cycling and kayaking.

Things Celtics must do to force a Game 7

The Celtics will do their best Thursday night with injury woes aplenty. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

The Celtics — or what’s left of them, anyway — return to the TD Garden Thursday with their playoff lives on the line. After five games against the Atlanta Hawks, it’s been the home team’s series. Boston needs that to continue, or they’ll be making offseason plans sooner than they’d hoped. The good news? The Celtics look like a com-

pletely different team at home than they do in Atlanta. Last weekend, the C’s took both games in Boston against the Hawks thanks to Isaiah Thomas in one game, and a complete team effort in the second game (with Marcus Smart leading the way). So how do the Celtics avoid elimination and force a Game 7 back in (gulp) Atlanta? Here are three main factors.

1

Tape everything up and hope for the best Unfortunately for the Celtics, their biggest issue is one they really can’t control at this point: health. Avery

The bruised and battered Boston Celtics have their backs to the wall, and must win two straight to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Bradley has missed all but the series opener, and if you’re holding out

hope he’ll play in Game 6 or a possible Game 7, give it up. Jae Crowder and Kelly Olynyk haven’t been the same since suffering injuries in the regular season, either. But the most concerning injury now has to be that of Isaiah Thomas, who suffered a “mild” sprained left ankle in Game 5, the second time he’s tweaked it in as many games. On top of that, his foot is messed up. The Celtics go as Thomas goes, and while he’ll certainly play, it remains to be seen how effective he’ll be.

2

Who’s going to bail out Thomas?

It was obvious what the Hawks did to stymie the Celtics offense in Game 5: They took Thomas out of the game by swarming him every time he touched the ball. That partially explains his season-low seven points. Thomas was quick to point out after the game that when that happens, his teammates have to make the Hawks pay. If two or three Hawks are on Thomas, there are open Celtics players. Evan Turner, Crowder, Smart, and Jonas Jerebko all have to do their parts on offense in order for this thing to work. Don’t expect another 40-plus scoring game from Thomas.

The Celtics can’t seem to hit shots in Atlanta. Through three games, they’re shooting an abysmal 23.9 percent from the field in the first quarter. Those kinds of starts equal losses. In Boston, that number jumps to 46.7-percent. It’s not rocket science, folks. If the C’s can get off to a good start and keep the fans engaged, they can put that fear back into Atlanta that we’ve seen in this series. But if they instead allow Paul Millsap or Kyle Korver to get hot early, it’ll be another first-round exit.

Red Sox can’t panic, must be patient with Kimbrel A slow start for Boston’s new closer is nothing new. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

It hasn’t been the greatest start of the year — and to a career — in Boston for closer Craig Kimbrel. He allowed a home run in the ninth inning in the home opener against the Orioles. He struggled in the eighth inning in the Patriots’ Day loss to the Blue Jays and most recently, he allowed a two-run homer in the ninth inning to tie the game Sunday against the Astros. The Red Sox gave up a large package for the All-Star closer this offseason in the trade with the Padres as they traded outfielder Manuel Margot, infielders Javier Guerra and Carlos Asuaje, as well as left-hander Logan Allen. A lot was expected of Kimbrel going into the year, and this was not the type of start anyone was looking for, but looking at his career splits, this shouldn’t have been a surprise. Kimbrel is a historically slow starter and the right-hander gets significantly better as each year goes on. For his career, he has an ERA of 2.88 in the month of April, the highest of any month during the season. It goes down to 2.76 in May, 1.29 in June, 0.84 in July, 0.76 in

August before going up to 1.55 in September and October. Bottom line is, the poor start from Kimbrel is not a surprise going off his past. As hard-throwing as he is, the right-hander may need some time to get into a rhythm to be able to repeat his delivery to get the best results. Also, with how reliant he is on his fastball, he may not like pitching in the cold weather. Kimbrel has at least 39 saves in five straight seasons, so he knows what it takes to be successful. His ERA has also been below 2.00 in three of his last four seasons. “In this game, there’s going to be times where you fail,” Kimbrel said to reporters earlier this week in Atlanta. “You have to understand that. Obviously, you want to think about why you failed, but going out the next day, you don’t want that to weigh on you or to put extra pressure on yourself to do better. You’ve just got to go out there and do what you can do.” The Red Sox will be getting set-up man Carson Smith back in the next week or so, which will get the bullpen back to full strength and the Red Sox can only hope his return also boosts Kimbrel’s performance because the team desperately needs him pitching well. Otherwise, the team could be in for another long summer.
