US CRUISE SHIP PULLS INTO HAVANA ON HISTORIC CUBA VOYAGE

1

The first U.S. cruise ship to arrive in Cuba in decades received a warm welcome on Monday from Havana residents who gathered at the wharf in the colonial old city as hundreds of Americans waved from the decks of the ship. It was another first for the two countries since U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced a historic rapprochement in 2014, and comes weeks after Obama’s visit to the Caribbean island. Carnival Corp’s Adonia, a small ship with a capacity of 700 passengers, slipped through the channel into Havana Bay in the morning under picture-perfect skies, then docked at the colonial old town. A Cuban law prohibiting nationals from entering the country by sea had almost delayed the cruise but was lifted by local authorities just over a week ago. REUTERS

FBI THWARTS POSSIBLE ATTACK ON JEWISH TARGET

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a man in South Florida for planning an attack against the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement on Monday. A law enforcement source said the man was arrested as part of a sting operation in which federal agents operate undercover. The U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of Florida said a man was taken into custody on Friday in a “national security-related arrest,” but there is no current threat to public safety. CONSERVATIVES IN CONGRESS URGE SHUTDOWN OF IRS

3

It’s a U.S. taxpayer’s dream: make the Internal Revenue Service go away, and the largest conservative group in Congress is endorsing just that. The Republican Study Committee, which counts over two-thirds of House of Representatives Republicans as its members, called recently for “the complete elimination of the IRS.” The committee’s support for this idea, once confined to the fringes of conservative ideology, suggests it is more widely accepted on Capitol Hill than ever. But many in Washington, including some Republicans, have trouble taking it seriously. Calls to abolish the IRS have not been well thought through, Republican Representative Charles Boustany said in an interview.

Firefighters had not determined by late Monday the cause of a fire that destroyed a historic Flatiron cathedral on Sunday evening. The fire on West 25th Street at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sava began just before 7 p.m. on Sunday, NY1 reported. Firefighters needed about three hours to bring the blaze under control. According to published reports, a building caretaker was treated for smoke inhalation, and four firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

“This is a huge loss for the community.” Johnson

“This is a huge loss for the community,” City Council Member Corey Johnson told CBS2. “In addition to being a place of worship, this historic building was a New York City landmark, treasured by the people.” Questions as to the identities and conditions of those injured, what started the blaze and what would become of the historic building went unanswered Monday night. On Monday morning, authorities were still dousing flames left from the large Sunday fire, which occurred after more than 700 churchgoers had celebrated Orthodox Easter Mass earlier in the day, NBC4 stated. Constructed in the 1850s, the cathedral became a historic landmark in 1968, according to NY1. Jason Nuckolls contributed to this report.

Startup app aims to bring new era to STD testing, prevention Mately will allow users to privately share their results via the service or dating apps. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

One New York Citybased startup is hoping that its new service will not only take away the inconvenience and discomfort that comes with being tested for STDs or HIV, but also help reduce the transmission of disease in the long run. Mately aims to offer individuals a new method to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases right in the comfort of their homes and as often as they believe is necessary. The service will also give users the ability to privately share results electronically with potential romantic partners either through Mately or via dating apps.

campaign to get the word out on helping “take STD testing out of the Stone Age,” the company has featured what it calls edgy takes on the issue, including several featuring gay men discussing their tests and another using “Sesame Street” characters Bert and Ernie, whose close friendship led to claims they were a couple.

STD testing, we are just scratching the surface,” said Dr. Jake Deutsch, owner of Cure Urgent Care NYC. Deutsch added that something like Mately allows services to reach individuals who usually will opt out of heading to their doctor to get tested and will open the door for early detection of any disease. And along with offering people a quick and easy way to be tested, Mately will also give users any additional support they need if tests come up positive for either HIV or another STD. “We want to make it easier for people to get tested but if we can see a change in disease then I really think that the value is really much greater,” Deutsch said. “It will change the standard that people interact and hopefully, and ultimately most important, it will help reduce disease.”

are 20 million new sexually transmitted infections in the United States each year. And even with a number that high, a large group of individuals do not see their doctors, often due to either the stigma of being tested for sexually transmitted diseases or simply because they do not have the time. “We see thousands of people a year that get

How it works Users create an account on the Mately website to become members and then upload three photos of themselves to their profile. As part of this process, users select how frequently they want to receive test kits and, along with HIV testing — which is required for members — if they want additional STD testing for diseases such as syphilis or gonorrhea. To complete the joining process, users then head to a participating pharmacy to have their identity verified and to provide a DNA sample through a swab of saliva to confirm that your sample is your own. Once the users receive a kit — either via mail or at the pharmacy — they complete a dried blood spot collection and a urine sample.

It can’t protect you from STDs if you don’t use it. GETTY IMAGES

The kit is then mailed back to Mately and will be tested via a lab for undetectable and recently-contracted HIV infection, in addition to any optional add-ons. Results are then sent electronically to users via the Mately app.

Convenience For Brandon Greenberg, CEO and founder of Mately, the mission behind the service is to make testing easier for users while also encouraging individuals to get tested on a regular basis. He added that the conversation of providing a more convenient

way for individuals to get tested has been happening but there have been no businesses or products to respond to the need. “It’s just an obvious idea that should have been done a while ago,” Greenberg said. Along with giving people the convenience of being tested as often as they want, Mately also allows users to receive their results online through which they can then share with others privately via dating apps. Mately will also partner with dating sites to provide Mately members with badges so others can know

that they are part of the service and can open a dialogue without the discomfort. “I don’t think people should have to go through interrogation to build chemistry with someone,” Greenberg said.

Crowdfunding Currently, Mately has started an Indiegogo campaign to get a feel of how people are reacting to the service and to allow individuals to register in advance. Even if the $500,000 goal is not raised, the plan is to still get Mately fully running by the start of 2017.

Uber drivers in New York form labor association An Uber car GETTY IMAGES

New York Uber drivers are finding strength in numbers. The drivers have formed an association to help them deal with the ride-sharing service. Labor leaders said on Sunday that more than 1,000 Uber drivers joined the group, CBS New York reported. The move came days after the company agreed to a $100 million settlement with drivers in two other states, Reuters reported. The drivers reportedly signed membership cards with the association, known as the Amalgamated Local of Livery Employees in Solidarity, or Alles, the association said in a statement. The recent settlement with Uber drivers in Cali-

“Uber financiers are forcing drivers to work long hours without any benefits or labor law protections.” Association statement

fornia and Massachusetts over expense claims also allowed them to form associations that can bring grievances to the attention of management. The step follows a recent decision by the National

Labor Relations Board that blocked the formation of a traditional union for Uber drivers. Alles said it would work to protect members against car companies, insurance firms and others,

while urging New York City and state to tighten regulations on Uber and its ride-sharing competitors. “Since Uber management controls the fares charged for the service, drivers want and need security and protection,” the association said in a statement. “Uber financiers are forcing drivers to work long hours without any benefits or labor law protections.” Drivers are struggling

to make car payments, maintain their vehicles and still have enough money left over to support their families, said Kevin Lynch, co-chair of the association. “It shows that people are really hurting,” he said. A representative of Uber Technologies Inc., based in San Francisco, was not immediately available for comment. Uber, along with Lyft and other competitors, enable passengers to ask for rides with a smartphone app that sends the request to drivers who use their own cars. Many of the drivers are part-timers. The business model has come under sharp criticism from established taxi companies and many cities and states because the drivers are unlicensed and the fares are untaxed. A class-action suit by Uber drivers in California and Massachusetts claimed Uber drivers were employees and thus entitled to reimbursement of expenses. The company

Student dead after NJ frat house shooting A male student was fatally shot early Monday morning at a fraternity house near the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey, authorities said. Joseph Micalizzi, 23, of Freehold, New Jersey was shot at the Tau Kappa

Epsilon fraternity house shortly after 3 a.m. and confirmed dead at University Hospital in Newark two hours later, prosecutors said. Officers from the Essex County Homicide/ Major Crimes Task Force and the Newark Police Department are investi-

gating the case. “At this time, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified,” said Carolyn Murray, the acting Essex County prosecutor, in a statement. Authorities declined comment on a possible motive but local media

said the shooting occurred during a robbery. The university said in a statement that Micalizzi was a resident at the fraternity house. “This is a tragic time for Joe’s family, friends and the entire NJIT campus and we extend our thoughts and prayers

to all affected,” said NJIT President Jeff Bloom. NJIT said there no imminent threat to the campus and is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information. A representative for the fraternity did not immediately respond to a request for comment. REUTERS

insists drivers are independent contractors. The April 21 settlement, which still must be approved by a San Francisco federal judge, provides for a $100 million payout to drivers in those two states on the basis of how many miles each has driven for Uber. As a part of the settlement, the company can still treat drivers as contractors, but it agreed to allow them to form drivers associations. The case against Uber had been closely watched in Silicon Valley, as other companies in the ondemand tech economy share Uber’s reliance on independent contractors. The class action had been scheduled for a trial in San Francisco federal court in June. Nothing in the settlement prevents a court, or U.S. labor authorities, from deeming Uber drivers employees, an attorney for the drivers said in a statement. Reuters contributed to this report

The victim Micalizzi was a junior mechanical engineering student at NJIT, according to the school’s website. He made the dean’s list last year and was in his second year at NJIT after transferring from Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey, Bloom said.

NY businesses to cut trash by half The effort is part of the mayor’s goal to vastly reduce what is sent to landfills. More than 30 New York City businesses, including Whole Foods Market, Walt Disney Co.’s ABC and Anheuser-Busch, have

agreed to cut the trash they send to landfills in half by June, the mayor’s office said Monday. The “Zero Waste Challenge” is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ambitious goal to reduce the city’s waste output 90 percent by 2030 through increased recycling, reduced packaging and composting. In

2015, the city’s sanitation department collected 3.2 million tons of waste.

“We’re doing what we can to make recycling and composting as accessible as possible to New Yorkers, but everyone will need to do their part to make a more sustainable New York City a reality,” de Blasio said in a statement. “These businesses are leading the way.” New York, with more

than 8 million residents, is the largest city in the Western Hemisphere to adopt such a far-reaching plan. Participants in the challenge, which began in February, have already slashed 60 percent of their waste, on average, using strategies such as stocking coffee mugs

rather than paper cups and switching to digital storage from filing cabinets, de Blasio said. Nearly 13,000 tons of trash have been diverted from landfills so far. The challenge also requires businesses that regularly have leftover edible food to donate it to collection organizations. REUTERS

Man sought for masturbating on F train: NYPD Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man they say masturbated in front of a woman while on a Queens train over the weekend. On April 30, between 10:30 p.m. and 11:09 p.m., a man sat across from the 26-year-old victim while onboard a southbound F train at the Northern Boulevard subway station, according to authorities. The suspect — described as a Hispanic man in his 50s — then masturbated while he stared at the woman, cops said. Investigators released photographs of the man in hopes of identifying him.

Police described the man as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 180 to 200 pounds and last seen wearing a black jacket, green and black plaid shirt, and light-colored pants. He was also carrying a beige messenger bag. Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. ANGY ALTAMIRANO

Met Gala 2016 red carpet arrivals On Monday, the glitterati came out in futuristic-inspired haute couture for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute gala. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology,” meaning, unlike last year, are selfies going to be allowed at this highbrow affair? The exclusive — and very private party — which raises money for the Costume Institute, kicks off its big exhibit for the year. This year’s show explores the contrast between haute couture and machine-made garments and showcases the perfect blend between fashion and technology. What did this mean for the glamorous guests? The FBI has launched its third search of the Manchester, Connecticut, home of convicted criminal Robert “Bobby the Cook” Gentile, who has been linked to an investigation into a 1990 Boston art theft. On March 18, 1990, two thieves disguised as Boston police officers robbed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of 13 works of art, according to the Hartford Courant, which stated that the stolen art was valued at about $500 million. On Monday around noon, FBI agents began searching the home of Robert Gentile, whose involvement has been suspected in the 26-yearold art heist though he was never charged in connection to it, the Boston Globe reported. Gentile is currently serving a sentence for illegal gun

possession and selling prescription drugs. “If they didn’t find [the paintings] in the first two searches, how could they find them this time?” Gentile’s attorney A. Ryan McGuigan was quoted by the Globe, commenting

on this search being the FBI’s third of the property in pursuit of the paintings. Officials have put a tent in front of Gentile’s Frances Drive house, and area police have blocked off the street, the Courant added. FBI agents brought heavy equipment in three trucks to help conduct the search. McGuigan said that his client was adamant that he had no role in the robbery or knowledge of the paintings, according to the Globe.

Solar-powered plane departs California on round-the-world flight The Californiato-Arizona flight marks the 10th leg of the journey. A solar-powered airplane midway through an attempt to circle the globe departed northern California on Monday on the next leg of its history-making journey, a relatively short 16-hour flight to Arizona, the project team said. The spindly, singleseat experimental aircraft dubbed Solar Impulse 2 took off just after 5 a.m. local time from San Francisco on a flight that will take the plane over the Mojave Desert before its planned arrival in Phoenix shortly before 9:30 p.m. Occupying the plane’s tiny cockpit for

Monday’s trip was Swiss aviator Andre Borschberg, a co-founder of the project. He and fellow pilot Bertrand Piccard, also of Switzerland, are seeking to achieve the first round-the-world solar-powered flight, taking turns at the controls for each leg of the voyage. Borschberg was the pilot for the Japan-to-Hawaii trip over the Pacific last July, during which he remained airborne for nearly 118 hours, or five days and five nights. That flight shattered the 76-hour world duration record for a nonstop, solo flight set in 2006 by the late American adventurer Steve Fossett in his Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer. It also set new duration and distance records

for solar-powered flight. But the feat dealt a setback to the Solar Impulse team. The plane sustained severe battery damage on the flight from Japan, requiring repairs and testing that kept the aircraft grounded in Hawaii for nine months. Piccard completed the trans-Pacific crossing last month, reaching San Francisco after a flight of nearly three days, more than three times longer than the 18 hours it took Amelia Earhart to fly solo from Hawaii to California in the 1930s. The biggest difference is that the Solar Impulse flies without a drop of fuel. The four engines of the propellerdriven aircraft are powered solely by energy

clock on extreme longdistance flights. The Swiss team hopes eventually to complete its circumnavigation in Abu Dhabi, where their journey began in March 2015 as part of campaign to bolster support

for clean energy technologies. In a precursor to their globe-circling quest, the two men completed a multi-flight crossing of the United States by solar power in 2013. REUTERS

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE

Clinton courts Appalachian voters in early nod to Trump election showdown Dem front-runner met union leaders and some of 600 workers laid off last year when AK Steel Holding Corp. announced it would idle a furnace in eastern Kentucky. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton talked to steel workers in Appalachia about their economic struggles on Monday, as she tried to win over bluecollar voters in a part of the country where support for Republican Donald Trump is strong.

Clinton said job losses in manufacturing and the coal industry in the area had been a heavy blow. “Talk about a ripple effect. It’s just devastating communities,” Clinton told workers around a ta-

ble at an Italian restaurant in the town of Ashland. She said she would look into whether assistance could be extended to Kentucky as it was to workers after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New

York and Washington. “It makes sense to try to do it in a more targeted way in situations like this,” she said. Clinton has pledged more than $30 billion to help regions that depend on coal, but her promise was overshadowed when she said in March that the country would “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” While the Republican presidential candidates focus on Tuesday’s primary in Indiana, Clinton launched a trip to Appalachia this week that will include events in Ohio and West Virginia. Trump’s evangelical support put to test Donald Trump’s success in the race for the White House may well depend on the support of Republican evangelicals suspicious of the front-runner’s more liberal side as he discloses his social views. Trump has had some success with evangelicals in states such as South Carolina. But there are signs of slippage on the eve of Tuesday’s nominating contest in Indiana, a conservative Midwestern state that has voted Republican in nine of the past 10 presidential elections. Trump, 69, has taken stances on Planned Parenthood family clinics and gay and transgender rights that raise

Christian conservative concerns, including in such states as Indiana where they make up a high proportion of voters. An NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist opinion poll shows Trump with a wide lead in Indiana, 49 percent, to 34 percent for his nearest rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and 13 percent for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Most previous Indiana opinion polls showed a tighter race with Trump leading Cruz by only a few points. A Trump win in the state could be crucial to his chances of securing the nomination but may also offer a gauge of whether he can rally evangelicals. REUTERS

So about all that Jon Snow speculation Remember when everyone was freaking out about the fate of Jon Snow on “Game of Thrones” and there were all those reports about Kit Harington keeping the same hairstyle and showing up on set, but then Harington and the show’s producers kept insisting that no, the character is really dead? And then remember this week when they brought him back to life? Oh sorry, spoiler warning. Here’s the thing: Harington is really, really sorry about lying to all of us. “I’d like to say sorry for lying to everyone,” he tells Entertainment Weekly. “I’m glad that people were upset that he died. I think my biggest fear was that people were not going to care, or it was just going to be, ‘Fine, Jon Snow’s dead,’ but it seemed like people did have a — similar to the

Jeremy Irons explains how everything is bad The Oscar-winner talks “The Man Who Knew Infinity and gets grim about the world’s future. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Jeremy Irons has two films arriving in the States around the same time. New to theaters is the biopic “The Man Who Knew Infinity, about the inexplicably obscure Indian mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan (played by Dev Patel). Mid-May brings “HighRise, based on J.G. Ballard’s classic novel. The first is

Jeremy Irons plays G.H. Hardy, a mathematician at Cambridge who helped spread the word about Srinivasan Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a prodigy plucked from poverty in India, in the biopic “The Man Who Knew InďŹ nity.â€? IFC FILMS

about prejudice; the other is about societal collapse. Irons loves talking about both. In “Infinityâ€? the Oscarwinner plays a math legend who’s one of the only people not prejudiced against Ramanujan, whose findings contributed mightily to science. â€œThere are people who are instinctively fright-

GETTY IMAGES

ened of people who are different from them. That comes out of prejudice — and, I think, from insecurity and fear, Irons tells us in his soothing yet coarse English timbre. “The great thing about being an actor is I’m so used to being inside other people. I hope I’m not prejudiced. I mean, I get cross with some people for their narrow-mindedness or their lack of care or their apathy. But that has nothing to do with their race, religion or color. “Infinity’s real-life story is set over a century ago, but it has obvious resonance with today, when the political the-

ater has been reactivating deep-seated prejudices, both here and in Irons’ homeland. Part of the reason, he thinks, is the failure of our leaders. “All over the world people are losing faith in their politicians, Irons surmises. “They’re running our countries on purely economic rather than idealistic terms. I think that’s a mistake. Politicians should have the strength to say, ‘What kind of country, what kind of world do we want? Let’s make our economy create that for us, rather than just following the dollar or the pound.’

Irons rattles off a laundry list of societal ills that aren’t being addressed. He floats the idea, being considered in Finland, of paying everyone a wage whether they’re employed or not. He predicts another economic collapse, bigger than the one in 2008 because we still have unregulated markets. He also challenges the notion — ingrained in the West since after World War II — that buying things makes us happy. It’s here that what started as a conversation about “Infinityâ€? and bigotry turns into a discussion more in line with

“High-Rise,â€? in which Ballard created a dirty, violent, darkly hilarious allegory about an apartment building whose inhabitants turn to tribalism, feral instincts and violence. “You have a huge underclass in Europe and America who have nothing to lose. And that’s when revolutions start. We can’t allow that to happen,â€? Irons says. “That’s why when Trump stands up and starts spouting what I call ‘barroom politics,’ they’re very attractive. The man on the street says, ‘Yeah, let’s make America great again!’ What the f— does that mean?â€? Irons points out that’s happening in England as well. They have their Bernie Sanders: Jeremy Corbyn, who, he says, “really believes in his ideology but is, sadly, maybe not a political animal in quite the way that makes a leader.â€? And they have Nigel Farage, an “idiot,â€? Irons says, “who is a bit like Trump, who spouts off in fairly unthoughtout ways about things that are wrong — which is easy to do if you’re not in the driving seat and you have to get it right.â€? As such, some in England find Farage very attractive. But there’s one big difference between America and England. Irons adds, wryly: “The English have a nose for charlatans.â€?

Treat Williams doesn’t want to get political The actor helped ex-politician Robert Mrazek refine his first film, “The Congressman. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

It’s not uncommon to take a politician to task, but Treat Williams has been frank with one of them about the art of screenwriting. When Robert Mrazek, former member of the House of Representatives for Rhode Island, approached the acclaimed actor about starring in a film he’d written called “The Congressman,â€? Williams didn’t mince words. “It looked like what it was: A very good story written by a guy who had not written much dialogue,â€? Williams tells us. He liked Mrazek’s story, in which a pol named Charlie Winship, currently drowning in scandals, finds rejuvenation when he treks out to a remote part of the country. But it needed a good punch-up. â€œI told him exactly where things were too drawn-out, too preachy. You can’t teach people about politics in a movie. You have to make it character-driven,â€? he recalls. “And everything I said he agreed with. He was very

The end product, being released in a few dozen theaters across the nation before a VOD release later on, is very character-driven and deceptively light. It gets in a few political digs, including a subplot in which Charlie becomes a viral pariah after he refuses to stand for or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. “What’s important to me is it’s a comedy. It’s not a political drama. I don’t think anybody needs a political drama. We have it 24-7 on TV,â€? Williams says. “This is the most bizarre political period in American politics.â€? Mrazek co-directed “The Congressmanâ€? with Jared Martin, both of them first-timers. Williams, by contrast, has worked with scores of great directors: Sidney Lumet (“Prince of the Cityâ€?), Milos Forman (“Hairâ€?), Sergio Leone (“Once Upon a Time in Americaâ€?) and Steven Spielberg (“1941â€?). He wound up helping Mrazek out a bit on the front, too. â€œI’ve worked with some really awful directors. But I’d rather work with an inexperienced director whose heart is in the right place than a

terrible director who’s a narcissist, he says. Williams talks memories of when he first made the transition from stage to screen. One of his first big roles was in Forman’s “Hair from 1979, a take on the previous decade’s hit show. “We weren’t very good film actors. We didn’t understand film, he recalls. “He would do take after take, and he wore us down till we stopped trying to act and started behaving.

His early days Williams says it took him about 10 years to ďŹ nd the right way to approach directors when he disagreed with how they wanted him to perform. “When a director is adamant that I do something a certain way that I don’t like, I’ll say, ‘I’ll do it that way. I’ll give it to you 100 percent. But let me have a take where I do it my way. I think in the editing room you’re going to like what I do better, because you don’t know this guy as well as I do. I’ve got him mapped out,’â€? Williams explains. “Nine times out of 10 they use the take I said would be better. They may want more and bigger, then they go, ‘Oh, I’m so glad Treat gave me a more muted version.’â€?

Bringing up Babymetal The Japanese metal band chats Kobametal, the fox god and selfie goals. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

In a manner similar to DC Comics creation of the Justice League or Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Japanese producer Kobametal — a Tokyobased, hard rock Simon Cowell, if you will — formed Babymetal in 2010 with three young “idol music female musicians set to play the parts of sugar-coated heroines who would mashup flashy J-pop and crunchy heavy metal. Since that time, rather than use their real names or ever speak out of character, Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) sing in sweet, playful tones, but hammer and pummel their riff-heavy melodies for a scorching sound that is uniquely theirs and theirs alone on two cute, cutting albums: their eponymous 2014 debut and their newly released “Metal Resistance. Note: The band only

speaks Japanese and Babymetal’s Su-metal answered these questions via email through a translator. What were you listening to as young metal heads before joining the band? We didn’t know anything about metal. We thought it was scary music. The first time we listened to metal we were like “What in the world is this?â€? We learned the greatness of metal when we started as Babymetal. What drives your speciďŹ c brand of heavy metal? Under the guise of “metal resistance,â€? we aim to create a new genre called babymetal and become one-of-a-kind — an only one existence. How surprised were you when members of Metallica, Bring Me the Horizon and Slayer stated that they were big fans of your group?

The Future of Foot Surgery has arrived at Downtown Podiatry Services

Yuimetal, from left, Su-metal and Moametal of Babymetal ash the fox god hand sign. GETTY IMAGES

We were glad. It builds up our confidence to just be ourselves. Kobametal claims to be inspired by the mysterious deity called the “fox god. Who is this god to you and how would you describe your collaboration? We have never met the fox god in person so we hope to see him someday. The fox god always prophesies things that defy our imagination so there may be surprising collaborations in the future. Most metal music has the reputation of menace behind it; evil. How does that jive with the role model aspect of

idol music? How do you make that connection a positive one? Babymetal has the originality of making a mixture of intense metal sound and cute, cool dance. We are aiming to do what the other existing metal bands can’t do. I read that your producer Kobametal has stated that babymetal music can unite the world. Was that a big part of making the new album? During our world tour in 2015, there were moments that we became together with the audience by singing in Japanese and dancing. “The One is a song that includes that passion the

most. We want to cross borders and overcome language barriers and become one, together with Babymetal’s music. Do you feel as if you have been accepted by American audiences? How does that dier, so far, from your Japanese audiences who go crazy for the three of you? The American audience has always, without fail, shown us very real emotions. At festivals, there are people who just see how we perform at first, but as the show goes on they show us their fox signs and I think most of the audience gets loud when we perform our danceable songs. The

American audience sings along [with] Su-metal’s melody more than the Japanese audience. Who have you most wanted to take selfies with during your travels? We haven’t been able to take a photo with Iron Maiden, so we hope we could someday. Thinking of your future, do you hope to be singing metal music as you get older? We want to establish our genre called babymetal, so until we accomplish that goal we’ll press forward through uncharted roads, but only the fox god knows!

20 THINGS TO DO

Do Derby Day right Horse racing’s most exciting two minutes is also a great reason for fancy hats and day-drinking. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Unless you own a racehorse, Saturday’s Kentucky Derby will be as much about giant hats and mint juleps as ponies. There’s a whole day of bourbon-and-champagne fun leading up to those two minutes of racing, and we rounded up some of the best things to do before the main event at 6:34 p.m.

The Brooklyn Derby What started in 2003 with

three roommates having a good time in their apartment has grown into a 500-guest affair. This year’s Brooklyn Derby is going down at Greenwood Park (555 Seventh Ave., South Slope), where they’re turning the beer garden into a bourbon garden with yard games like bocce, a hat-making station and “areas that can only be defined once mint juleps are in our system. Get in on the all-inclusive party ($75) from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. with Maker’s Mark juleps, wine and beer, Southern snacks and live bluegrass and big band music.

Don’t have a race-day-worthy hat? Make one at the Brooklyn Derby.

St.) is pulling double duty for the derby and as a celebration of its fourth anniversary. The fun goes from 3 p.m.-9 p.m. with f-r-e-e Maker’s Mark juleps, bubbly, food and prizes for best race attire. Reserve your spot on Eventbrite.

Named for two thoroughbreds who ran the derby at the turn of the last century, the East Village’s Saxon + Parole (316 Bowery) is sure to do Derby Day right. From 3 p.m.-7 p.m., the terrace and bar will be transformed (that’s your cue to transform your look for the day, too) with a bluegrass band to set the tone; light bites like oysters, seafood towers and Kentucky-inspired dishes; and a julep mixing station, as well as opt for beer, wine and bubbly. beginning at noon and going all the way until 10 p.m., with food (fried chicken, shrimp salad, burgers, etc.) and drink packages from $19.98. Wear your best boating attire (there’s a nauticalthemed hat contest) and enjoy the waterfront views while playing giant beer pong, horseshoes and cornhole.

Brother Jimmy’s Live Saturday wraps Schweid & Sons’ NYC Burger Week with a food derby at Brother Jimmy’s Live, the recently revamped restaurant-music venue in Union Square (116 E. 16th St.). Beginning at 5 p.m., vote with your mouth among four burgers vying to get on the menu: Blue Grass (bleu cheese, bourbon onion jam), BLfgT (bacon, lettuce, fried green tomato), BJ’s BBQ (cheddar, chipotle barbecue sauce, fried onions) and the Hot Brown (open-faced burger with pimento cheese). Try them all for $40 — with a paired craft beer or Woodford Reserve cocktail.

21 Club

TY Bar

The jockeys are back flanking the entrance of 21 Club (21 W. 52nd St.) in time for Derby Day. Arrive at 3:30 p.m. for a Southern-style party, so don’t hold back on the hats and seersucker. The $65 ticket includes two drinks and bar bites like cornmeal-fried oysters, mini hot browns and bourbon-glazed ham on a biscuit. Prizes go to those who pick the winner, while best dressed get dinner for two. Call 212582-7200 for reservations.

Watch the race on one of the city’s biggest screens (a 12-by-12-footer) at TY Bar inside the Four Seasons. From 4-8 p.m., official race bourbon, Woodford Reserve cocktails are the order of the day, like the Ginger Peach Julep (ginger puree, mint, peach liqueur) and Sweet Bourbon Punch (tea, orange juice, limeade, bourbon). Dress your best — Woodford reps will be giving out prizes, with a special category just for the most creative hat.

The Bell House

Eleven Madison Park

The race will be screened in two rooms at The Bell House (149 7th St., Brooklyn). The 142nd Kentucky Derby Party begins at 2 p.m. with a set from Hungry Marching Band spanning every musical genre that uses brass instruments, and food specials like chocolate julep pie and burgoo stew, the ultimate Southern kitchen sink dish. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

The only crowd as ritzy as Churchill Downs gathers at Eleven Madison Park. Alas, tickets ($265) are sold out, so sign up for 2017 at Makeitnicenyc.com. Here’s what you’re missing: raw bar, juleps, cigars, champagne (with sabering demo), live music and EMP’s fried chicken from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Proceeds go to an equestrian therapy charity that works with veterans.

•1/4 teaspoon ground cumin Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spay a 12-cup muffin pan with nonstick spray. 2. Bring a skillet sprayed with nonstick spray to medium-high heat. Cook, stir, and crumble until turkey is fully cooked, onion has been softened and lightly browned, and corn has thawed

and slightly blackened; about 4 minutes. 3. In a large bowl, whisk egg whites with Greek yogurt until mostly smooth. Add cheese, beans, cilantro, chili powder, cumin, turkey mixture, and remaining 1/8 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Stir to mix. 4. Evenly distribute mixture among the cups of the muffin pan. (Cups will be full.) 5. Bake until firm and cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical

treatment that must be given by a trained health care professional. Most Insurance Plans Cover These Treatments: Most Union Plans 1199 GHI Work Comp Aetna, Cigna United Health Care (in or out of network) Empire Plan Empire BC BS Medicare AARP United Health Care Oxford ... and others

And the great news is: There is a free report and information kit available that tells you everything you need to know about this treatment. It also tells you all about cutting-edge medical clinics right here in New York City that are offering this cutting-edge treatment with tremendous success. To get your information kit or to schedule a No-Obligation Risk Free Shoulder Screening simply call 800-627-PAIN (7246). DOWNTOWN NYC MEDICAL 65 BROADWAY, NYC Med. Director: Gazelle Craig, D.O

We’re told it’s important to be flexible as early as elementary school. Remember the sit-and-reach part of the Presidential Fitness Test? As adults, yoga is touted as the thing to do. But what if cardio is more your thing? Or what if you generally live a healthful lifestyle already? What good will stretching for you? Dr. Jake Mayes, owner of 100% Chiropractic, fills us in.

It keeps your spine strong Mayes says a strong spine is essential to overall health. “Your body has innately put a giant bony structure around the most important thing in your body,” he says. Plus, when someone has minimal flexibility, it causes the muscles in the upper back, neck, lower back and abdomen to weaken

— basically everything along the spine. Simply put: Flexibility keeps your spine and the muscles that surround it strong.

Counteracts sitting all day Mayes says sitting at a desk all day causes repetitive muscle patterns in your neck and midback. “The patterns can lead to neck and shoulder pain,” he says. “The muscles weaken and then it can hurt to sit up straight.” Bad posture can become your body’s default because it’s so used to it, but flexibility prevents that.

It makes you a better athlete Many athletes who focus solely on cardio neglect improving their flexibility. But Mayes says a weak spine can

cause a lot of issues. “If there’s a problem with your spine, it will move down to your pelvis, knees and ankles,” he says. “It will get locked in so you have tight muscles and then you aren’t moving correctly. This leads to knee and hip pain.”

It prevents dementia Believe it or not, there’s a link between developing dementia and keeping that spine strong. “Alzheimer’s and dementia are linked to a lack of cerebral spinal fluid flow, which is a lack of motion in the spine,” Mayes says. “You still have to keep your brain strong by reading and doing crosswords, but if you look at healthy individuals who ward off Alzheimer’s and dementia, they are very active people.” And that includes flexibility.

Moves for improving your flexibility As a chiropractor, Dr. Mayes recommends making an appointment so you can get your spine checked out. Since everyone is different, the home stretches someone is “prescribed” differ from person to person. But in general, some good stretches to do every morning and night are: Simple toe touch There’s no getting out of this

one. Touch your toes, one leg at a time. Hold for five seconds, letting the tension build and then release the tension for five seconds. Repeat five times per leg. Cross-body stretch Start on your hands and knees. Lift your left arm to the sky and slide it all the way through the space between your right

arm and right leg. Hold for a few breaths, feeling the stretch in your shoulders and upper back. Repeat on the other side. Side stretch With your feet together, stretch your right hand overhead. Inhale and exhale deeply. Repeat with the left side.

The Islanders stumbled in Game 2 but will look to get a leg up on the Lightning tonight in Game 3. GETTY IMAGES

Islanders must turn up the pressure in Brooklyn tonight vs. Tampa Bay Game 3 of the semifinal series is tonight at Barclays Center. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

The Atlantic Division finals has become a race to three. And Jack Capuano believes in order for the New York Islanders to advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since the epochal spring of 1993, his charges have to get in front

of Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop. Essentially, get in front to stay in front to potentially finish in front. “I don’t think we got in front of him enough,” Capuano told reporters following the Islanders’ 4-1 loss to the reigning,

defending, undisputed Eastern Conference champions in Game 2 at Amalie Arena. The series is tied 1-1 with Game 3 set for Tuesday (7 p.m., NBCSN) at Barclays Center. “We started the game with power play after power play,” Capuano added. “They did a great job pressuring us all over the ice [and] kind of killed any surge of momentum that we had. As the game went on we started to do the right things, but at the end of the day, for me, he’s a great goaltender and I don’t think we went to the paint as often as we could to take away his eyes.” And with a few words, the task Capuano has laid out in front of his team is clear as the best-ofseven series shifts to the Borough of Kings: create traffic. Through the first two games, the Islanders have been outshot (67-42) and out-attempted (124-83) by the Lightning. The Islanders won Game 1 despite being outshot, 36-22, and out-attempted, 65-44, due in part to a two point performance from franchise cornerstone John Tavares and two goals, 2:29 apart, off the stick of Shane

“I think we’d like to capitalize on the power plays. They’re coming hard and we have to execute better.” Islanders captain John Tavares

Prince at the end of the first period. In Game 2, the Lightning outshot the Islanders, 31-20, and had a 59-39 advantage in shot attempts. Key to the Lightning’s offensive attack was Jon Cooper’s decision to reunite The Triplets line of Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov. The trio finished with two goals on seven shots and 16 shot attempts. “They’re a quick team,” Capuano said of the Lightning. “They [had] some chances. Our goalie made some saves early but they found [a way to] squeak one in there that gave them some momentum, and they shut the

door in the third. They did a good job. They had a lot of zone time.” Another aspect of the game in which the Islanders lamented missed opportunities was the power play. The Islanders finished Game 2 1-for-5 on the man advantage with Nikolay Kulemin’s redirection of Thomas Hickey’s point shot accounting for their only goal. For the series, the Islanders are 2-for-9 on the power play. By comparison, the Lightning are 1-for-7. “We had a tremendous second half of the first period,” Tavares said. “Too bad the period ended. We had them hemmed in their zone. I think we’d like to capitalize on the power plays. They’re coming hard and we have to execute better. Once you’re able to move the puck and escape some of the pressure, get some pucks to the net.” The Islanders called up Christopher Gibson, Scott Mayfield, Bracken Kearns, Marc-Andre Cliche, Michael Dal Colle and Justin Florek from AHL Bridgeport on Sunday. It is likely that all will serve as black aces.

The Mets are one of the hottest teams in the game as they have won eight of 10 and now only trail the Nats by a game and a half in the NL East. Neil Walker continues his hot start with nine homers.

It was only a matter of time before the Tigers got things going as they have now won five straight to get within striking distance of Chicago. Jordan Zimmermann has a remarkable 0.55 ERA.

Oakland is just 1.5 games out in the AL West after a tough start. Rich Hill has been one of the biggest surprises in the game as he’s among the league leaders in strikeouts.

Nationals (17-7)

Pirates (15-10)

Mariners (13-11)

Yankees (8-15)

Washington has won three games in a row and continues to be led by Bryce Harper and his nine home runs and 24 RBIs — both in the top five in the NL. Also, Daniel Murphy is hitting .365, which is third in the NL.

Pittsburgh is another team on fire as it has won eight of its last 10 to only trail the Cubs by three games in the division. Their run differential isn’t great (plus-18), so there are areas they need to tighten up.

Seattle has won seven of 10 games to now be right behind Texas at the top of the AL West. Robinson Cano has been one of the best hitters in the game with eight home runs and 24 RBIs to lead the American League.

It’s been one of the worst starts in years for the Yankees as they were swept over the weekend by the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Their biggest issue remains their struggles at the plate.
