OBAMA TO VISIT HIROSHIMA LATER THIS MONTH
1
Barack Obama later this month will become the first U.S. president to visit Hiroshima in Japan, but he will not apologize for the United States’ dropping of an atomic bomb on the city at the end of World War II, the White House said. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize early in his presidency in 2009 in part for his commitment to nuclear nonproliferation, Obama on May 27 will tour the site of the world’s first nuclear bombing with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. With the end of his last term in office approaching, Obama will “highlight his continued commitment to pursuing the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons,” the White House said. 4 PEOPLE STABBED IN TAUNTON MALL, SUSPECT SHOT

Several people were stabbed at a shopping mall outside Boston on Tuesday evening, authorities said, in what police described as an “active scene.” The Taunton Police Department said on Twitter it was investigating “multiple stabbings” at the Silver City Galleria mall and on a nearby street. Police said the suspect crashed a car into the store before stabbing two people inside. Witnesses told 7News Boston that they saw people running out of the mall and heard gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing police officers with guns drawn and that the mall had been evacuated. Police said some injuries might be lifethreatening. The Massachusetts State Police said preliminary indications suggest an off-duty police officer shot the man in the mall. A dispatcher with the Taunton police said the situation was ongoing, but contained. He declined to provide further information at press time. REUTERS

A Baltimore police officer will be tried by a judge instead of a jury on charges stemming from the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died in police custody, a Maryland judge ruled Tuesday. Edward Nero, 30, is the second officer to face trial in Baltimore City Circuit Court over Gray’s death from a neck injury suffered in a police transport van. The incident sparked rioting and protests across the city of 620,000 and is one of those highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement. Nero is charged with seconddegree assault, two counts of misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. All are misdemeanors. REUTERS
The ‘punk ballerina’ brings ‘Bitches Brew’ to Boston Ballet Choreographer Karole Armitage adds her touch to “Mirrors.” REENA KARASIN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Karole Armitage, known as the “punk ballerina” for her signature style that pushes the bounds of classical ballet, is introducing gunmetal lycra costumes and rock ’n’ roll influences to Boston Ballet this month with the world premiere of “Bitches Brew.” The piece is one of several works in “Mirrors,” the assemblage of contemporary works that will finish Boston Ballet’s 2015-2016 season. Armitage combines her classical ballet training with contemporary influences to create a genre that she terms “hard rock ballet.” Her repertoire of choreography ranges from the Broadway musical “Hair” to music videos for Michael Jackson and Madonna to work for her own company, Armitage Gone! Dance. “It’s got the raw, visceral drive of rock ’n’ roll,

the eroticism of rock ’n’ roll, the intensity of rock ’n’ roll, but the poetry and virtuosity and refinement of traditional classical dance,” she says of her style. “Bitches Brew,” set to the classic Miles Davis album of the same name, focuses on the tension between form and formlessness that Armitage has grappled with in developing her own style. It features 15 dancers en pointe, eight of whom are soloists or, as Armitage calls them, “spices” that help make up a “rich stew.” One of the prominent roles in “Bitches Brew” is the seeker, who is trying to understand and navigate the world around her. “The music is both in-
credibly refined and delicate and volcanic and ferocious — real swings and contradictions throughout,” she says. “I wanted to make a piece that feels as spontaneous as improvisation since of course jazz is to a great extent improvised, and yet also have really great form.” Armitage compares adapting to her style to learning to speak a new language. Boston Ballet dancers are learning to move in entirely different ways for her choreography — one pair of dancers intertwine via the ballerina’s hair, rather than her hand. “This is funky and democratic — this is the modern world,” says Armitage. “I tried to make movement that has a different geometry. It’s got more curves, it’s got more levels. Things are happening simultaneously, everyone’s as important as everyone else on stage.” Armitage’s many and high-profile projects throughout her career have all contributed to her goal of discovering her own unique style. She says that working with Michael Jackson, in particular, was “a hoot,”

as when he didn’t get to choose his dance partner he retaliated by not showing up for a performance for the higher-ups at Sony until 4 a.m. Armitage incorporates many of her own life experiences into her choreography, but also finds inspiration in theories about time and space such as quantum mechanics. She studies physics in her spare time and channels these scientific ideas into her dancing. She hopes that audiences will be struck by the beauty of life after seeing “Bitches Brew” and appreciate its intricacy. “Consciousness is a complicated mixture of observing and emotions and analysis and blank spots — I [hope they will] embrace the complexity of life,” she says.

MIT student sexually assaults sleeping BU student: Cops Samson Donick, 20, an MIT basketball player, was arrested and charged with sex crimes after police examined a surveillance video in the building. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
An MIT basketball player who allegedly sexually assaulted a Boston University student in her campus dorm was arrested on related charges this week. Samson Donick, 20, of Tiburon, California, and formerly of Boston, allegedly sexually assaulted the 20-year-old victim as she slept last October. The student confronted him and screamed, prompting her assailant to flee the scene, the Suffolk District Attorney’s office said. Donick was reportedly an MIT student at the time of the assault, according to multiple media reports. A player’s bio matching Donick’s name and hometown lists him as a basketball player at the school from 2014-2015, though his picture is no longer on the site. An earlier version can be found on Google Cache. Investigators said Donick and three other men, all of whom didn’t attend the school, were signed into the dorm by two female students at about 2 a.m. and entered their suite. About 30 minutes later Donick and one of the men went looking for a woman who lived in the dorm that the man knew. Police believe the pair entered at least 10 dorm
rooms looking for the woman. During the search, they came across the victim — who did not know Donick or the second male — and Donick allegedly assaulted her. Campus police were later able to retrieve surveillance footage of the two men in a building stairwell and picking up their identification at the front desk where they had been signed in. They were both identified by police, with one man giving “a statement indicating that he and Donick had entered several suites and bedrooms during the time in question, including one bedroom in which Donick had stayed for a short time, prosecutors said. The victim’s description of her assailant was also consistent with Donick and the clothing he was wearing in the surveillance camera footage. Donick faces charges of aggravated rape, breaking and entering at night with the intent to commit a felony, burglary and indecent assault and battery. He’s expected to be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday. The man who stated he was with Donick when he entered the suites that night will not be facing charges, a spokesperson for the district attorney said.

Bieber barefoot in Boston Pop star Justin Bieber has arrived in Boston before two upcoming concerts, but he has already been seen walking through the city — without shoes or socks. Photos and videos posted on social media showed the famous singer around town on Monday evening, walking barefoot through crosswalks, at the Boston Public Garden and at his hotel, the Boston Globe reported. The singer spent time on his barefoot
walk feeding a squirrel in the Common, WHDH reported in a related article. A man could be seen in some of the social media posts walking behind Bieber, appearing to hold the singer’s shoes, the Globe added. Bieber himself took to Instagram to show some of his impressions of the mild temperatures in Boston. Bieber will be appearing at TD Garden for concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, WHDH stated.  JASON NUCKOLLS

Competency hearing to resume for accused Colorado clinic gunman Among those killed were two people who happened to be in the clinic’s waiting area — a U.S. Army veteran and a mother of two — as well as a police officer. The man who proclaimed himself a “warrior for the babies” after a fatal shooting spree at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado last year was due back in court on Tuesday for the continuation of a hearing on his mental state. During a daylong hearing last month, two state psychologists testified that their evaluation
of Robert Lewis Dear, 58, found him delusional and unfit to stand trial for the Colorado Springs rampage that left three dead and nine wounded. El Paso County judge Gilbert Martinez ordered the mental evaluation of Dear in December after the South Carolina native insisted on firing his attorney and representing himself in a case stemming from the first fatal attack on a U.S. abortion provider since 2009. Dear, who has insisted he is competent, declared himself guilty and a “warrior for the babies” in previous courtroom outbursts. If Martinez rules Dear unfit — meaning he is incapable of understand-
ing the proceedings and assisting in his own defense — the case will be suspended and he will be sent back to a state hospital where doctors will seek to restore him to competency. The first of two psychologists to testify on April 28, Jackie Grimmett, said Dear appeared to be suffering from a delusional disorder, possessing a factual but not rational understanding of the criminal proceedings. Her colleague, B. Thomas Gray, concurred that Dear was delusional, saying the defendant “intends to plead guilty unless God tells him differently.” A police detective

who took the stand recounted Dear telling police after his arrest that he believed he was being followed by 10 federal agents the day of the shooting. REUTERS

Dating site matches Americans fleeing Trump with Canadians A dating website is pledging to match Americans who can’t live with a Donald Trump presidency with Canadians looking for love, facilitating the pledge often made by U.S. voters to move to Canada if the real estate billionaire is elected. “Maple Match makes it easy for Americans to find the ideal Canadian partner to save them from the unfathomable horror of a Trump presidency,” the Maple Match website reads, before offering a waiting list for interested singles. Trump’s bombastic campaign to lead the Republican Party to the November presidential election has alarmed some Americans, both liberals and those in his own party, and the pledge by some to move to Canada if he is elected has gathered steam.
The dating site was also active on Twitter, suggesting its matchmaking service would help Americans avoid the difficulties of gaining Canadian citizenship. MAPLE MATCH
In February, the island of Cape Breton off Canada’s Atlantic coast marketed itself as a tranquil refuge for Americans seeking to escape should Trump capture the White House. The Maple Match website allows users to add
their name to a waitlist matching dismayed U.S. voters with interested single Canadians, adding “We’ll let you know the next steps soon!” Officials with Maple Match did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Chief
Executive Joe Goldman told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that more than 10,000 singles and about 2,500 Canadians had signed up for the website’s waiting list as of Tuesday morning. “Oh yes. Maple Match. Make dating great again,” Twitter user @RebekahSage said, playing on Trump’s campaign pledge to “Make America great again.” “To heck w @Tinder, @ MapleMatch offers to not leave you thinking ‘what did we just do?’ in 2016,” Twitter user @KeldaPharris tweeted on Tuesday. “I can’t wait to meet my Canadian buddy! Thanks @MapleMatch,” user @mollye_malone said on Twitter. While the pledge to “move to Canada” has been made in elections past, it rarely plays out in reality.

Climbers near Everest summit for first time in three years Climbers on Mount Everest are on the brink of the first attempts in three years to make the final ascent to the world’s tallest peak, after fatal avalanches cut short the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. Teams at forward camps are looking for a weather “window” to open in the next few days, clearing the way to the 29,035 foot summit along the Southeast Ridge first climbed by New Zealand’s Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. The southern route, on the Nepali side of the mountain, has suffered tragedy over the past two years, with 16 sherpa guides killed by an avalanche in the treacherous Khumbu Icefall in 2014. Last year, an earth-

quake that killed 9,000 people across Nepal sent a massive snowslide crashing into Base Camp, killing at least 18 climbers and guides and putting an end to that year’s campaign. At least 289 climbers and their guides are in different high camps waiting for a weather window and jostling to become the first to scale
the peak. Nearly 700 people summitted in 2013. Tourism Department official Gyanendra Shrestha said climbers had fixed ropes up to the South Col, the final camp, at about 26,246 feet, and were stocking it with supplies. “Climbers have begun to move from the base camp to higher camps for the summit,” Shrestha told Reuters from Base Camp. Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, who is in touch with climbers at Base Camp, said in Kathmandu that, weather permitting, the route from the South Col to the summit would be fixed on Wednesday. China scrambles fighters as US sails warship near Chinese-claimed reef Guided missile destroyer the USS William P. Lawrence traveled within 12 nautical miles of Chineseoccupied Fiery Cross Reef, U.S. Defense Department spokesman Bill Urban said. China scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday as a U.S. navy ship sailed close to a disputed reef in the South China Sea, a patrol China denounced as an illegal threat to peace which only went to show its defense installations in the area were necessary. The so-called freedom of navigation operation was undertaken to “challenge excessive maritime claims” by China, Taiwan and Vietnam which were seeking to restrict navigation rights in the South China Sea, Urban said. “These excessive maritime claims are inconsistent with international law as reflected in the Law of the Sea Convention in that they purport to restrict the navigation rights
Chinese dredging vessels are purportedly seen in the waters around Fiery Cross Reef in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea in this still image from video taken by a P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft. U.S. NAVY HANDOUT
“This is not a pointed strategy calculated to do anything except keep a regular process of freedom of navigation operations underway.” Kerry that the United States and all states are entitled to exercise,” Urban said in an emailed statement. China and the United States have traded accusations of militarizing the South China Sea as China undertakes large-scale land reclamation and construction on disputed features while the United States has increased its patrols and exercises. Facilities on Fiery Cross Reef include a 10,000-foot
runway which the United States worries China will use to press its extensive territorial claims at the expense of weaker rivals. China’s Defence Ministry said two fighter jets were scrambled and three warships shadowed the U.S. ship, telling it to leave. The U.S. patrol “again proves that China’s construction of defensive facilities on the relevant reefs in the Nansha Islands is completely rea-

sonable and totally necessary,” it said, using China’s name for the Spratly Islands where much of its reclamation work is taking place. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the U.S. ship illegally entered Chinese waters. “This action by the U.S. side threatened China’s sovereignty and security interests, endangered the staff and facilities on the reef, and damaged regional peace and stability,” he told a daily news briefing. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry waved aside a question as to whether the U.S. aim was to send a message ahead of a visit to Asia by President Barack Obama this month. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims. The Pentagon last month called on China to reaffirm it has no plans to deploy military aircraft in the Spratly Islands after China used a military plane to evacuate sick workers from Fiery Cross. Google, Oracle compete for innovation label in Android retrial Oracle Corp. and Google faced off on Tuesday in a $9 billion intellectual property retrial, with Oracle accusing Google of stealing programming to become the world’s leading smartphone player and Google saying it acted legally as a true innovator. Oracle claims Google’s Android smartphone operating system violated its copyright on parts of the Java programming language, while Alphabet Inc.’s Google says it should be able to use Java without paying a fee under the fair-use provision of copyright law. The dispute previously went to trial in 2012, but a jury deadlocked. If the new jury in San Francisco federal court rules against Google on fair use, then it
will consider Oracle’s $9 billion damages request. The case has been closely watched by software developers who fear an Oracle victory could spur more software copyright lawsuits. However, investors see little risk for Google in part because the possibility of an injunction is remote. In court on Tuesday, Oracle attorney Peter Bicks said about 100,000 Android smartphones will have been activated by the time he finished his hour-long opening statement, and 3 billion phones had been activated since the lawsuit began. That translated into $42 billion in revenue, he said, and all those phones contained Oracle’s valuable property. REUTERS

Ryan Gosling is a dad once more Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have welcomed their second child, according to some shady detective work by TMZ. The birth certificate lists the new baby as a girl named Amada Lee Gosling, born April 29 at 8:03 a.m. in Santa Monica, California. And no, they didn’t misspell “Amanda.” Amada — also the middle name of the couple’s first daughter, who is 20 months old — is the name of Mendes’ late grandmother. And also her character in the 2007 police drama “We Own the Night,” but that seems like a less-sentimental reference. If this all seems kind of sudden, it’s because word hadn’t even gotten out that the notoriously press-shy couple was expecting again until last month. And now the baby is

In “A Bigger Splash, Tilda Swinton almost doesn’t speak at all. That might be a good hook for a movie, but it’s downright cruel for those who like hearing the Oscar-winner blabber. In real life she’s a talker, quick to launch into epic, eloquent monologues. But this new film — her third feature with Italian director Luca Guadagnino, including “I Am Love — robs her character of speech, the result of an operation she got thanks to her being a stadium-packing rock star. Swinton’s Marianne Lane isn’t completely mum. When she speaks, which she does as infrequently as she can, it’s in a husk. Even that can be hard on the vocal chords. Not that
Swinton was ever worried. “I’m so not a professional. I’m sure a professional would know how to do it without damaging their voice. But I didn’t think of it, Swinton says. “I haven’t damaged my voice. So my rock career is safe. Rock stardom is something Tilda knows at least something about, having worked with David Bowie. “Funnily enough, we didn’t think of Bowie, Swinton explains. “But the truth is anybody who puts on a sequin jumpsuit for the rest of time is going to be reminiscent of Bowie. Instead she thought of Chrissie Hynde, Patti Smith, Joan Jett, PJ Harvey. “She’s like all sorts of people I am lucky enough to know, with that much drama in their life. “A Bigger Splash isn’t about her rocking out, though. It follows Marianne on an extended vacation on the arid but gorgeous Mediterranean island of Pantelleria, doing little but lounging about

with her photographer boyfriend (Matthias Schoenaerts). Their peaceful idyll is upset by the arrival of Henry (Ralph Fiennes), a music producer and close friend (and, for her, a former lover) who, unlike them, is still perpetually very much on. “He’s trying to keep it going, keep the party going. And she wants to go home and be peaceful and get some rest, says Swinton. “Being a rock star brings with it a particular need for retreat.
Speaking about not speaking Marianne wasn’t always going to be a rocker. In the original script she was an actress, and she had a normal amount of dialogue. At ďŹ rst Swinton wasn’t keen on taking on that baggage. “I was going to not make a ďŹ lm that particular year. My mother had just died, and I didn’t want to do anything. I certainly didn’t want to play

Lukas Graham’s introspective “7 Yearsâ€? is as tear-jerking as it is catchy, making it the perfect pre-summer track for the graduating generation. The four-piece Danish band, whose lead singer is incidentally named Lukas Graham, released their self-titled global debut (this one distinctively blue, a la Weezer) stateside in April on Warner Bros. following their U.S. breakthrough “7 Years.â€? The band is now nearing the end of their American tour, and Graham catches up with us from middle of nowhere Oklahoma, which he’d describes as “very flat,â€? but lovely. Who would you say some of your biggest musical inuences have been?
In the middle of “7 Years, there’s a moment where you hear an announcer saying “Lukas Graham and a crowd screaming. What is that from? It’s the first festival show we did in Denmark, the first time we played for 5,000 people inside a tent. There was this energy. [The crowd’s reaction] was like 115 decibels and our sound guys said we were allowed to play at 103 decibels. It was a crazy experience.
Lukas Graham take over the charts with “7 Years. CHAPMAN BAEHLER
That would be my father — he had a massive record and CD collection and introduced me to new bands. The standard saying is that after [age] 27, you don’t pick up new bands, so my dad would find new bluegrass bands or drum and bass bands, like Prodigy, and have me
listen to them. And you’ve said in the past that hip-hop also plays a big role. I don’t have a favorite genre, but rap music in general, story-driven stuff, has been a huge influence. I really liked Dr. Dre because he never
shied away from anything lyrical. “2001 is one of the most groundbreaking albums in pop music. You wouldn’t have Drake or Eminem or 50 Cent or the Game as they are today. You’d probably have them, but they would sound different.
Was that a pinnacle moment for you as a band? Yeah, but for me, my favorite sound is not when they are yelling, but when they sing back. It gets me every time. It’s so
weird, but I get emotionally involved because I get to do this for living. I have friends in prison for murder and drugs and explosives, but I get to do this. [Our band] is so lucky, we’re the boys who got themselves together and did something instead of wasting our high school years behind bars. Mentions of your parents appear a lot on the album, not only in “7 Years but in “Funeral and “You’re Not There. What about them inspired you? They were exceptionally good parents. There was food on our table, we had beds, we weren’t beaten, we had clothes on our backs. I remember hanging out with other people’s families and you realize how dysfunctional they can be for no other reason other than that their parents are ... d—s. The freedom that my parents offered us made me and my younger and older sisters conscious, giving, caring human beings.

At some point, most of us will develop a cataract. They re simply part of our body s normal aging process and can be successfully removed when they interfere with our normal daily routine. Unfortunately, cataracts continue to be one of the leading causes of blindness in the U.S. That is why New England Eye Center is proud to join the American Academy of Ophthalmology in celebrating National Cataract Awareness Month. Through early diagnosis and treatment, blindness from cataracts can be prevented.

Go local

The best place to find great original art? Right under your nose. Not only is buying local good for your wallet, it’s good for your community. “Be a part of your local art history,” says David Parker, a contemporary and modern art advisor to collectors worldwide. “Look at any museum anywhere and you’ll see that it exists because someone cared about art enough to look after it, and that shaped an entire space. If you can spend $300 a year buying work from an artist you love, after 20 years, you might be their biggest supporter.” Pro tip: For great deals on work from up-and-comers, hit up student shows.
LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE Buy prints wisely
Trust your gut
If you can’t afford an original piece, prints are a solid alternative — if you do your research, that is. “Go to a reputable source and make sure it is authentic,” says Rebecca O’Leary, a consultant to both private and corporate collectors. “There are a lot of pseudo art dealers who will sell you a framed digital copy and call it an ‘original print from a secondary source’ for a high price. It can be like buying a used car — be sure you know who you are buying from.”
Once you get yourself out to a gallery and interacting with art, buying a piece is actually quite simple. “It’s about looking and feeling: What is your response to what you’re looking at? Are you feeling it? If not, move on,” says Parker. “The word that I always come back to is ‘resonance.’ Does the work resonate with you on some level? If so, it’s the right work. Don’t let someone tell you that one silkscreen is better than another.”

Revolution can’t buy a win New England finds itself in last place of the MLS’ Eastern Conference.
at home and winless on the road (0-3-3), therefore these next three games — which are all at Gillette — will be critical if they want to make this season interesting. The Revolution have only scored 13 goals this season, which is middle of the pack. but their 20 goals allowed is the worst out of all 20 teams. Moreover, their average of 0.91 points earned per game is second worst in MLS, ahead of only Houston (2-5-2), the last-place team in the Western Conference. Luck when it comes to health hasn’t really been on their side either as forward Charlie Davies (groin), midfielder Chris Tierney (hamstring) and defender Jose Goncalves (rib) are all currently banged up. Tierney appears on schedule to return this weekend against the Fire, which will certainly help, while Davies could miss another game or two and Goncalves’ status is a bit of a mystery after he left late in the game against Los Angeles. After cheaping out on star midfielder Jermaine Jones and trading him to Colorado (6-2-2, 1st place in the West) before the 2016 season had even started, this was expected to be somewhat of a rebuilding year for the Revolution. So far, calling it a “rebuild” would be kind. The team has been absolutely dreadful. The Revs have already played 11 matches and have only won a single game (1-0 on April 1 vs. Red Bulls). If you are an eternal optimist, you’d say that their absurd seven draws show that they aren’t that far off from winning, but after Sunday’s depressing 4-2 loss in Carson, California, to the Galaxy (5-1-3) — you have to wonder if they are a lost cause. day’s pivotal meeting (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) with Chicago (1-2-4) at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution are in eighth place in the East while the Fire are in last (10th). The Revs didn’t give themselves a chance against Los Angeles, which still happens to
be one of the top teams in Major League Soccer. New England spotted their hosts an insurmountable 3-0 halftime lead and though they cut it to 3-2 in the second half (with Juan Agudelo’s possible tying goal hitting the crossbar in the 83rd min-

ute), it would have been highway robbery if they walked away with any points on that day. “It just wasn’t good enough in the first half,” admitted Revolution forward Kelyn Rowe. “We dug ourselves into a hole but we did start to
dig ourselves out of it. I thought we came out in the second half and played very well.” New England is tied for the most games played in the league, so it predictably owns the worst goal-differential in MLS. The Revs are 1-0-4
