ISIS BOMBS KILL 80 IN DEADLIEST BAGHDAD ATTACKS THIS YEAR

1

Three suicide bombings claimed by Islamic State across Baghdad killed at least 80 people, Iraqi police and hospital sources said, in the deadliest attacks in the Iraqi capital this year. Security has gradually improved in Baghdad, which was the target of daily bombings a decade ago, but violence against security forces and Shi’ite Muslim civilians is still frequent. Large blasts sometimes set off reprisal attacks against the minority Sunni community. The fight against Islamic State, which seized about a third of Iraq’s territory in 2014, has exacerbated a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq mostly between Sunnis and the Shi’ite majority that came to power after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. GEORGIA BEGINS US-LED MILITARY EXERCISE, ANGERING RUSSIA

2

The Georgian army began two weeks of military exercises with the United States and Britain on Wednesday, drawing an angry response from former Soviet master Russia which called the war games “a provocative step”. About 650 soldiers from the United States, 150 from Britain and 500 from Georgia were taking part in the maneuvers, with Washington dispatching an entire mechanized company including eight Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and, for the first time, eight M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks. Georgia’s Defence Minister Tina Khidasheli said the drills were an important event for the South Caucasus republic. “This is one of the biggest exercises that our country has ever hosted, this is the biggest number of troops on the ground, and the largest concentration of military equipment,” Khidasheli told Reuters. PLANNED PARENTHOOD SUES OHIO OVER PLAN TO RESTRICT FUNDS

Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit against Ohio officials on Wednesday over a plan by the state to restrict the U.S. health care agency’s access to state and federal funds, saying the action is unconstitutional, court filings showed. The lawsuit, filed in federal court on behalf of Planned Parenthood branches of greater Ohio and of the southwest region, says attempts to defund the health care agency and several affiliated programs are an “extreme punishment” exacted solely because it offers abortion services as part of its range of care, the document shows. Queens mom outraged after autistic son allowed to wander away from broken bus Nicolas Gomez found safe within minutes, but parents want answers from bus company. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Luciana Gomez started the week with news no parent ever wants to hear: Her 4-year-old autistic son had wandered off on his own after being left unattended on a school bus. Although he was recovered safely minutes later, she is outraged that it happened. The mother of two said her husband received the call on Monday afternoon from the principal at Positive Beginnings, her son’s school in Middle Village, Queens. The call was to let them know that minutes after their son got on the school bus to be driven home around 1 p.m., the bus had broken down just feet away from the school on Metropolitan Avenue. While transferring the children from one bus to another, Gomez’s son Nicolas, who is high functioning but unable to converse with people, walked away on his own. According to Gomez, what infuriated her and her husband was that not only was her son able to wander off alone — but no one seemed to notice or do anything about it. “We went crazy,” Gomez said. Nicolas was found by a school aide walking behind a couple and their children. She apparently asked the man and woman if they knew Nicolas and when they said no, she took him back to the school. At the school, the principal, Mindi Messinger, said she was horrified when she found out what

Nicolas Gomez, 4 PROVIDED

happened with Nicolas and also with the fact that the school was not notified that the bus — which was carrying all children with special needs — had broken down. “It’s a principal’s worst nightmare to think any of the children are in danger,” Messinger said. On Tuesday, Gomez and her husband went to see Messinger and watched footage of the incident. According to Gomez, in the video you can see the new bus arrive and the driver of the brokendown bus makes his way onto the new one. Then the matron on the bus, who is there to help out with the children, is shown handing over two to three children at a time. She then returns to the bus, where Nicolas had remained, and retrieves the backpacks of the students. During this time, you

see Nicolas walk off the bus, wander away and approach two little children who were walking with their parents. Nicolas continues to walk down Metropolitan Avenue, a heavily traveled thoroughfare before going out of the camera’s view. About 90 seconds later, according to Messinger, you see the 4-year-old coming back with the school aide. After being notified, Messinger said she walked with Nicolas toward the bus — which appeared to be getting ready to drive away — and she asked the driver if he was missing someone. The principal said the driver replied, “We were wondering where Nicolas went.” The young boy was then driven home and the parents were never told until Messinger made the call to notify them.

“It’s disgusting because why do we have to wait for another child to go missing?” said Gomez. “Haven’t we learned as a society and a community the importance of safety?” According to Gomez, they have opened an investigation with the city’s Department of Education and also attempted to contact the local police precinct and a lawyer. However, the NYPD and lawyer have told them that because Nicolas was found safe, nothing else can be done. Gomez said that she refuses to put her son back on the bus and does not trust the bus company anymore. She said that now her family has had to readjust their schedules to make sure someone is always with Nicolas, taking him home and picking him up. Gomez added that they do not care about any monetary compensation but instead want there to be some sort of punishment because she believes it shouldn’t take a tragedy — like that of Avonte Oquendo, a 14-year-old with autism, whose body was found in the East River months after running away from his school in Long Island City — for there to be change. A spokesman for Alina Services Corp. — the bus company involved in the incident — was unavailable for comment despite several attempts by Metro to reach him. Messinger said that the company is very concerned. Toya Holness, spokeswoman for the DOE, also confirmed that the agency is looking into the case and investigating all the events that led to Nicolas being left unattended. “We are investigating a bus incident that took place in front of a school in Queens. We take this allegation very seriously and will ensure that it is addressed appropriately.”

NYC teens set to travel to Flint, Mich., to deliver cases of water The group is made of YMCA members from across the city and will begin their drive to Flint on Thursday. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Even with hundreds of miles separating them, teens from across New York City are showing families affected by the Flint Michigan, water crisis that distance means nothing in extending a helping hand. A group of six teens — from Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island — are set to hit the road on Thursday to travel to Flint, where they will deliver cases of water to the Downtown YMCA. Bottled water has been made available to close to 2,000 families at the Flint YMCA after the city dealt with contaminated drinking water. In 2014, the city switched its water source from Detroit’s municipal system to the Flint River to save money. The water from the river turned out to be more corrosive and caused lead to get into the water supply from aging pipes — contaminating people’s drinking water. After discussing the issue with participants and leaders, 12 YMCA branches across New York City decided to hold water drives over the last month. The program includes close to 400 participants, between the ages of 11 and 19 years old, from across the city and helps them get involved in issues that affect them and their communities. “They are using their skills of empathy and critical thinking to analyze a situation that is very removed from them,” said Yoko Liriano, citywide

Bronx, Harlem gang sweeps net nearly 30 arrests Two Wednesday morning gang takedowns, executed almost simultaneously, have led to the arrests of individuals in the Bronx and East Harlem accused of drug trafficking and violence. As part of a federal investigation, police arrested between 25 and 30 people, Pix11 reported,

adding that the arrests come exactly two weeks after a coordinated takedown that was called the largest gang bust in New York history. Approximately 16 alleged gang members accused of “trafficking in drugs and violence” were arrested at the Diego Beekman

Houses in Port Morris in the Bronx, according to the New York Daily News. Other individuals in East Harlem, alleged members of another gang, were arrested at nearly the same time. In the Bronx, Wednesday’s sweep took place in an area claimed by The Cypress Boys, but

authorities have not confirmed if they were targeted in the arrests, the Daily News added. Two weeks ago, authorities arrested more than 100 individuals suspected of involvement in the Big Money Bosses and 2Fly street gangs, according to Pix11. JASON NUCKOLLS

Inside Look: High living with High Line views Luxury buildings have popped up along the elevated park, creating a voyeurism-like atmosphere. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

In Manhattan, the term “park view” is synonymous with Central Park. Though it’s still highly coveted for its scenery and adjacent addresses, it’s not the only park in the borough that can increase real estate values. Proximity to Riverside Park on the Upper West Side, and access to the private Gramercy Park to those who live around it are also desired by renters

and buyers. Since it opened in June 2009 — later expanding from Gansevoort Street to West 30th and around Hudson Yards — the High Line has been an attraction to both visitors and West Chelsea real estate investors. Luxury buildings have popped up along the elevated park, creating a voyeurism-like atmosphere, with big windows looking onto the typically crowded greenway. High Line-adjacent apartments also feature unique views of a space that blends out-of-use railroad trestle with a landscape of bushes, shrubs, trees and flowers. Here are five properties with High Line views, some close enough to wave to park-goers.

Soori High Line, 522 West 29th Street

Soori High Line, 522 West 29th Street

The Soori High Line, which opened for sales in summer 2014, is located just steps from the park. StreetEasy currently lists four active sales in the building, ranging from $3,500,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bath, and $15,100,000 for a three-bedroom, three-anda-half bath. That apartment, a

SIRAS ORIEL DEVELOPMENT

duplex penthouse, features a private heated rooftop pool and approximately 1,036-squarefoot terrace. Sixteen of Soori High Line’s residences have “private heated 20- to 25-foot ionized salt water swimming pools tastefully integrated into the living space,” according to StreetEasy.

100 Eleventh Avenue Located just an avenue away from the High Line entrance, it’s impossible not to notice the outside of this building — made of 1,700 different panels of stainless steel and etched glass. Currently for sale for $6,275,000, potential buyers can combine units 7C and 7D to create a 2,650-square-foot, four-bedroom and three-anda-half bath. The home features 10-foot-tall continuous floor-toceiling glass, and two terraces with views of the High Line and Hudson River.

515 West 23rd Street HALSTEAD

515 West 23rd Street The High Line is right outside the window of this luxury condominium, currently listed

for $3,850,000. Described in its listing as “one of the greenest condos in Chelsea,” the unit also features a glass facade “made out of some of the largest single-pane

windows ever used in residential construction.” There is also a keyed elevator that opens up onto the full floor, two-bedroom, two-bath home.

TOWN RESIDENTIAL

VESTA 24, 231 Tenth Avenue This penthouse features a master suite overlooking the High Line, complete with floorto-ceiling windows. There is also a balcony facing the High Line’s lawn, but despite the

closeness to the often crowded park - the unit promises privacy with its two elevators. This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, listed for $6,595,000, also boasts views of the Hudson River, Empire State Building, World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty.

450 West 17th Street CORE

450 West 17th Street This three-bedroom, two-anda-half-bath apartment features a larger outdoor space — 1,700 square feet compared to

1,637-square-foot — than the inside. According to its listing, the terrace “was transformed into a private, lush and exquisite garden that resembles the informal and natural beauty of the plantings on the nearby High Line.” It is also

organized into an outdoor living room, dining room, lounge area and recreation space. For the colder months, future residents can enjoy the $6,295,000 home and its views through the 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows.

New York City police on Wednesday renewed their call for help in the search for a Queens woman who vanished from her neighborhood last year. Maria Brabazon, 55, was last seen Sept. 5, 2015, and her family is still wondering what happened to her. They have hired a private investigator. According to Mark Pucci, chief investigator at Beau Dietl & Associates, Brabazon was last caught on a neighbor’s surveillance video walking away from her 14th Avenue home with what appeared to be a canvas bag on her shoulder. Prior to that, the Whitestone resident was seen in other surveillance video going about her day, which started when she received a summons on her minivan about 8:30 a.m., Pucci said. About an hour later she went to a nearby gas station to fix her expired

inspection. On video, Brabazon appears to be acting normally and in good spirits and was speaking with customers and staff at the gas station, according to Pucci. After an hour she left and was later seen at around 11:25 at a register at BJ’s Wholesale in Whitestone. Afterward, she contacted family members around 2:30 p.m. and last spoke to a close friend around 2:45 p.m., Pucci said.

Minutes later Brabazon was captured by her neighbor’s surveillance camera near 14th Avenue and 152nd Street. In the video, she is seen crossing the street and making a turn toward the Whitestone Shopping Center. That was the last time anyone saw her. “She almost appears to vanish into thin air,” Pucci said. In the past few months, private investigators have used cadaver dog teams to search wooded areas, underneath the Throgs Neck Bridge and along the coastline. Police describe Brabazon as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 125 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde hair. She was last seen wearing black leggings and a white shirt. Brabazon’s family is offering a $10,000 reward for information. ANGY ALTAMIRANO

US Senate backs Arlington burial honor for female WWII pilots The Senate voted late on Tuesday to allow women pilots from World War II to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, the vast military cemetery just outside Washington, D.C. The unanimous voice vote moved the legislation a step closer to becoming law. It would allow the cremated remains of about 1,000 women who served as Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, in the 1940s to be buried there. The women performed training and transport missions in the United States during the conflict so male pilots could be sent overseas. Unlike male veterans, however, they cannot be interred at Arlington, the best-known but very

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE

Trump, Clinton in dead heat, campaign heats up After weeks of trailing Clinton in head-to-head polls, Trump’s numbers jumped after he effectively won the Republican nomination last week.

Republican Donald Trump pulled even with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a Reuters/ Ipsos opinion poll released on Wednesday, in a dramatic early sign that the Nov. 8 presidential election might be more hotly contested than first thought.

The national poll found 41 percent of likely voters supporting Clinton and 40 percent backing Trump, with 19 percent undecided. The survey of 1,289 people was conducted over five days and has a credibility interval of 3 percentage points.

The narrowing poll numbers are the result of both a gain by Trump and a drop by Clinton as she tries to overcome Democratic rival U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. While the general election campaign has hardly begun, the poll does mark a shift toward

Trump. A similar Reuters /Ipsos survey conducted in the five days to May 4 showed the former secretary of state at 48 percent and the New York magnate at 35 percent. With the party’s primary seasons winding down, the two likely nominees have turned their attention to the Nov. 8 election and begun to test drive attacks — both on policy and personality — that will dominate the election for the coming months. Clinton and Trump both poll well with voters of their respective parties, but independent voters continue to express uncertainty about

who they will support, with 38 percent saying they are unsure or would vote for someone else. But polls aside, one of the biggest factors in the race will be the changing demographics of the country as more minorities register to vote. Increased registration by Hispanics, who are likely to vote for Clinton, could play a roll in tipping the election her direction. REUTERS

BRIEFS FBI’s Comey expects more litigation over access to electronic devices FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday there will be more U.S. government litigation over accessing electronic devices and that encryption is the “tradecraft” of all terrorist groups, not just Islamic State. Comey told reporters the number of Americans trying to join Islamic State has dropped to one per month since August but the FBI has more than 1,000 investigations open into people who are in danger of being radicalized. REUTERS ATF: Texas fertilizer plant fire, explosion was criminal act A fire which triggered an explosion at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas, that killed 15 people three years ago was a criminal act, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators said on Wednesday. ATF Special Agent in Charge Rob Elder said a reward of up to $50,000 was being offered for the person or persons responsible for starting the blaze at the West Fertilizer Co. No arrests have been made yet, Elder said, adding that investigators had eliminated accidental and natural causes for

the incident. More than 400 interviews have been conducted and more than $2 million was spent on the probe, which is still active and ongoing, Elder said. Of the 15 who died in the April 17, 2013, fire and explosion, a dozen were first responders, Elder said. Many other people were injured and more than 500 homes destroyed. REUTERS Students sue US over stance on bathroom access A group of North Carolina public school students and their parents is asking a U.S. court to block two federal agencies from withholding education funding in a dispute over a state law mandating bathroom access according to birth sex. The conservative Alliance Defending Freedom filed the complaint on Tuesday on behalf of a group called “North Carolinians for Privacy.” It is the fifth lawsuit to seek judicial input on the law enacted in March. The group said the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education had improperly held that provisions of federal law banning discrimination in education settings on the basis of sex apply to gender identity. Ben Affleck wants to get back with Jennifer Garner Does it seem weird to you that it’s been almost a year since Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their separation, and yet there still haven’t been any further efforts toward formally filing for divorce? Seems suspicious. Or maybe not, because — as one source tells People — Affleck totally wants to get back together. “Ben wants Jen back,” the rather straight and to-the-point source says, while a second, equally Hemingway-esque source adds, “Ben wants to get back together. He wants her back.” They’ve been hopping around Paris this week with the kids while he’s on a break from filming “Justice League,” and if you believe the Daily Mail’s sources, they’ve even been spotted locking lips

at the hotel. Maybe separation makes the heart grow fonder? Or maybe that’s just the effect Paris has on people. Le sigh…

Maybe Amy Schumer started a trend. Now Justin Bieber is taking a stand against having to pose for photos with fans, the poor guy. Bieber took to Instagram to post a snapshot of a typed-out note explaining his new policy. “If you happen to see me out somewhere know that I’m not gonna take a picture I’m done taking pictures. It has gotten to the point that people won’t even say hi to me or recognize me as a human, I feel like a zoo animal, and I wanna be able to keep my sanity,” he wrote. “I realize people will be disappointed but I don’t owe anybody a picture. and people who say ‘but I bought ur album’ know that you got my album and you got what you paid for AN ALBUM! It doesn’t say in the fine print whenever you see me you also get a photo.” His announcement was met with more than a little blowback from some fans, arguing that it’s all just part of the job for a pop star. But Bieber wasn’t done, posting a rebuttal. “Years ago it was impossible to even take a picture at anytime not everyone was accessible to a camera now everyone has a camera phone and Now it’s just a different thing,” he wrote in a follow-up Instagram post. “If you think setting boundaries is being a douche I’m the biggest douche around but I think it’s smart and will be the only way I last. I wanna enjoy life and not be a slave to the world and their demands of what they think I need to do.” I’ll overlook the “slave” reference for now, but only because he called himself a douche, which just warms my heart.

Ronan Farrow keeps the Woody Allen conversation going Hey, did you forget those allegations that Woody Allen sexually abused daughter Dylan Farrow? Well, her younger brother Ronan Farrow would rather you not. He’s even drafted an editorial for the Hollywood Reporter timed to the Cannes premiere of Allen’s film, “Café Society,” to remind everyone. “I believe my sister,” he writes, saying he doesn’t blame mom Mia Farrow for not pursuing charges.

No more selfies with Bieber

“My mother still feels it was the only choice she could make to protect her daughter.” Ronan chides the entertainment industry for giving Allen a pass despite the allegations. “It sends a message to victims that it’s not worth the anguish of coming forward,” he writes. “It sends a message about who we are as a society, what we’ll overlook, who we’ll ignore, who matters and who doesn’t.”

Jenny Slate nabs herself an Avenger This latest bit of celebrity dating news kind of feels like someone at a tabloid was just throwing random celebrities’ names at a wall and seeing which ones ended up next to each other. But whatever, they’re both cool people, so: “Obvious Child” star Jenny Slate is reportedly dating “Captain America: Civil War” star Chris Evans because sure, why not? They recently shot a film together, “Gifted,” and apparently re-

ally, really hit it off, according to Us Weekly. The news comes a week after word got out that Slate and her husband of three years, Dean Fleischer-Camp, have called it quits in a most amicable breakup.

FILM

The model-turnedactress prefers her movies wild, like her new film, “High-Rise.”

Sienna Miller would rather be bold

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Sienna Miller can’t believe “High-Rise” exists either. Based on J.G. Ballard’s dystopian 1975 novel, the film — about a trickedout apartment complex that falls into disrepair — is as mad and decadent as the source. With its all-star cast engaging in wild parties and orgies and warfare and the occasional dog-eating, it seems beamed from another, less blockbuster-besotted era. “I really didn’t think anyone made films like this a n y m o r e ,” say the English actress. As it happens, this is exactly the type of movie Miller wants to

make. Not that she’s against the superhero films that clog multiplexes. “They’re fun and they’re entertaining, some of them. But the art is gradually being filtered out. That’s why TV is becoming more artistic,”

she says. Doing films like this is all according to plan. A few years ago, Miller, now 34, decided to actively pursue movies for key directors. It’s worked: In addition to supporting roles in “Foxcatcher” and “Mississippi Grind” — with James Gray’s “The Lost City of Z” and Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” en route — she scored the colead in Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” the highest-grossing release of 2014. “High-Rise” comes

from Ben Wheatley, known for the pitch black comedy-romance “Sightseers.” It also has an esteemed source, one that depicts societal collapse in a way that, even 40 years later, speaks about the now. Go online and you can see people behaving much like the people here. “The effect [social media is] having on our species is far more sinister than we’re allowing. The feeling of being validated by ‘likes’ and having followers — the whole thing

is really scary. You get narcissism, self-obsession, self-promotion — these very base, animalistic aspects that can lead to eating a dog,” she says, jokingly referring to an increasingly common pastime in “High-Rise.” Miller doesn’t take part in that section of modern living. “I like the idea of seeing what all my friends are up to,” she explains. “But I just don’t want to engage with that many people. I don’t have that desire to feel slightly exposed in a way

17

that doesn’t make me feel good. At the same time that’s probably completely stupid in terms of my ability to have market value. My agent, I’m sure, thinks it would be useful. But it’s just not for me.” Watching the movie, with its darkly funny and often harrowing barrage of excesses, it’s impossible to imagine filming it. But Wheatley knew what he was doing. “It was controlled chaos. What was exciting for me was there were no boundaries in terms of what you could do,” Miller recalls. “There were moments that were really complicated and hard,” she says, referring to one scene where her character — the more detached and vulnerable Charlotte — is violated by a documentary filmmaker played by Luke Evans. And yet it was all worth it for a film that felt artistically freeing. “It felt like old school filmmaking: ‘Let’s be a group, let’s be a troupe. Let’s get together and be artists,’” she says. “It’s not like, ‘Let’s make money.’ It’s like, ‘Who gives a s— what the film makes?’”

‘The Ride’ along Rock legend Stephen Stills sings the blues with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

To hear it from the horse’s mouth, Stephen Stills — the legendary Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer known for his time with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and his longtime solo career — has forever been blue. “I started off singing the blues. I’ve always been a blues singer,” says Stills, who kicked off his career with the folk-bluesy Au Go-Go Singers after leaving Dallas for New York City. Now, more than 50 years later, Stills has returned to the hard blues fold with The Rides, his new-ish band with blues guitar hotshot Kenny

Wayne Shepherd and rock-blues warhorse organist and composer Barry Goldberg. Following 2013’s successful “Can’t Get Enough,” the trio has reunited for a record, “Pierced Arrow,” and a tour. “We’re bound to our schedules when we’re all off at the same time,” says Shepherd of finding time between solo careers to make another Rides album. “We’d have to write over the course of a year rather than one shot because one of us would go off and do solo shows. We’re committed to this band, but there are always moving parts.” On stage since age 13, with eight raw and rusted solo albums under his belt, the now-37-year-old Shepherd met Stills at a most unlikely place: the Super Bowl. “Stephen and I were mutual friends with the owners of the Indianapolis Colts and both got invited to their box the

year that the Colts beat the Chicago Bears,” he says. “Not only was it the first time that we met, it was the first time that we played together. There wound up being this jam with me, Stephen, John Mellencamp and Mike Mills from R.E.M.” Several Colts games later, Stills decided that he wanted to put a blues band together with

Goldberg, whom he had worked with on the classic Mike Bloomfield 1968 “Super Session” album. Stills says “purity” best describes Goldberg’s performance as part of the Rides, while Shepherd is labeled as “fresh.” Shepherd explains: “[The sessions were] originally just going to be an experimental blues jam — somebody

‘Game of Thrones’ may be finally getting somewhere Last weekend, SNL did a skit about the revival of Jon Snow on “Game of Thrones.” The big joke was exactly how slow everything was going. I have to say, this season wasn’t the right time for it, despite the fact that it was funny. Three episodes in and Season 6 is surging forward at a galloping pace. It’s hard to keep up! In a good way, of course. This is the one show I don’t mind having Wikipedia open for, so bring it on. Even better is the fact that, even as a book reader, I have no idea what’s going to happen. OK, maybe I have an idea about the Tower of Joy, but that’s pretty much it. There is something to be said for having things actually move. There are only 10 episodes per season, and last time we hung out with our Westeros buddies nothing of consequence happened outside of constant brutality to women. Season 5 was teeth-grindingly slow, and a lot of fans said they were done. (To be fair, fans say

Spoilers here, so consider yourself warned: Arya’s got her sight back after a fighting montage. Daenerys arrived in the Dothraki capital, and it’s likely her

dragons are heading that way. Jon Snow is leaving the Wall. The Wall, guys! Things are actually happening at the Wall. There was even a joke about slowness and boredom with Tyrion trying to play drinking games to pass the time. (I’ve done that with the show. Have you?) It’s thrilling to get so close to the end of a series (though it’s been renewed for another season) and have it actually get better. It’s like, without the shackles of George R.R. Martin’s rather plodding plot in the final books and his snail-like pace in writing the next ones, the producers have let loose. It’s about time! I can’t wait to see where this is going, guys. And it’s getting there quickly.

Pizza New York-style pizza is a matter of hometown pride, of course, but that hasn’t stopped some newcomers from showing us that maybe, just maybe, some other cities know what they’re doing, too. Take the luscious St. Louis-style pies at Speedy Romeo (63 Clinton St.), which just expanded to the Lower East Side, or the Detroitstyle rectangular pizzas where the sauce goes on top of the cheese at Emily’s Williamsburg outpost Emmy Squared (364 Grand St., Brooklyn). Then there’s the deepdish pride of Chicago coming to Urbanspace Garment District (Broadway, 40th-41st sts.) when the market opens May 16.

Slices are $8; a whole cake is $37.

Raclette When a restaurant is named for a cheese, would you go for anything else? Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip

joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. Club Med Sandpiper Port St. Lucie, Florida

A half hour north of West Palm Beach, set on the St. Lucie River in Florida’s Treasure Coast, Club Med Sandpiper offers a premium family retreat with an all-inclusive rate that takes the guesswork out of budgeting for meals and activities. Toprated children’s programs occupy kids for the day

with activities like flying trapeze lessons, sailing, hikes and picnics, with nighttime activities that include beachfront movies and parties.

Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Graced with the country charm and hospitality of living legend Dolly Parton, Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort offers easy access to one of the country’s best theme parks, Dollywood. However, the 307-room resort stands on its own as a family destination, featuring an excellent pool complex adorned with waterfalls, the daily Camp DW for ages 4 to 10 with naturefocused programming, and nightly storytelling.

stay at the iconic Hotel Hershey. In a town dedicated to the founding father of chocolate kisses, Milton Hershey, the hotel opened in 1933. There’s great value in the hotel’s exclusive access to Hersheypark an hour before the gates open. The resort’s Cocoa Clubhouse offers an immersive day of summer fun for kids 5 and up, with activities that include visits to the property’s butterfly house, swimming and ice cream making.

Vista Verde Ranch Clark, Colorado

An all-inclusive luxury ranch in the depths of northern Colorado’s Routt National Forest, Vista Verde is a family favorite for its unfettered access to nature. Nightly capacity limited to 48 guests, so overcrowding is never an issue at the daily

activities, which range from fly fishing to whitewater rafting. The daily kids’ program includes horseback riding lessons, ropes-course challenges, scavenger hunts, a visit to the resort’s foals and even the occasional trip on an antique fire truck for ice cream.

Wequassett Resort & Golf Club Harwich, Massachusetts

A Cape Cod mainstay off Pleasant Bay, portions of the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club date back to 1907. Spanning 27 acres, the resort has spared no expense in outfitting its grounds for the most active families, with two pools, a waterfront with boats and water sports, two beaches, four Har-Tru tennis courts and a golf course. Daily programs for kids ages 2 to 12 include sailing lessons, swimming

lessons and dive-in movies. Be on the lookout for the resort’s old-fashioned ice cream truck serving Good Humor treats.

Winnetu Oceanside Resort Edgartown, Massachusetts

Among one of the largest properties on Martha’s Vineyard, Winnetu Oceanside Resort offers a premium family experience and unparalleled ocean views. Understated cottage-style accommodations range from one- to four-bedroom hotel suites to three- to five-bedroom private homes, all with amenities for cooking and dining in — a major plus for families. Along with the resort’s complimentary day programs for kids and teens, the resort thrills with its antique fire truck rides, lawn games, face painting and nightly s’mores bonfire.

THE PHENOMENON OF THE ‘FAT-LETE’ SID ROSENBERG OPINION Sid Rosenberg co-hosts ‘The Bernie and Sid Show’ on WABC in New York. You can reach him on Twitter @SidRosenberg

Bartolo Colon set the baseball world on ďŹ re this past weekend when he hit his ďŹ rst career home run at the ripe age of 42. Colon soaked up the moment by trotting down to ďŹ rst base with his bat in his hand and asking for

directions on where to go after rounding ďŹ rst base. Known to Mets fans as “Big Sexy,â€? Bartolo Colon stands just under 6 feet, weighs a whopping 285 pounds and is closer in resemblance to a sumo wrestler than a major league baseball player. But somehow, every ďŹ ve days for the past 19 seasons Colon has waddled his way out to the

mound and has baed major league hitters with his pitching prowess. Colon has gotten fatter and fatter over his career yet he has still been able to maintain his wizardry on the mound and lets his stats prove that he can still get the job done. In an age where baseball players are working hard to keep their bodies in tip-top shape, there are a handful of players that seem to have no interest in sculpting their bodies to that of Michelangelo’s David. Prince Fielder, Pablo Sandoval and Miguel Cabrera, for example, all weigh in at over 250 pounds and

visibly look to be struggling to control their weight. Fascinatingly enough, day in and day out, these “fat-letesâ€? continue to produce on the baseball diamond. Fielder, Sandoval and Cabrera have all been named to an All-Star team at least once in their careers and all have been in the conversation for their respective league’s MVP award. Many may think that you will only ďŹ nd fat-letes in baseball because of the slow pace of the game but they are wrong. Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame oensive lineman Larry Allen stood 6-foot-3, weighed 325 pounds and ran like a raging

hippopotamus in the open ďŹ eld. An example in basketball is Shaquille O’Neal, who struggled to maintain his weight throughout his career and yet some consider him the greatest center to ever step foot on the hardwood. Golfer John Daly topped out at 280 pounds and has been a PGA Tour card holder for 29 years. In the case of Colon, putting on weight seems to have allowed him to maintain enough velocity to keep hitters on their toes while honing his control and hitting his spots to get guys out. You see this happen with a lot of pitchers as they age and

start to put on weight. Livan Hernandez weighed 250 pounds when he retired after 16 seasons in the majors. Pedro Martinez weighed 150 pounds as a rookie and by the end of his career was closing in on 200 pounds. All three used their weight to their advantage by letting gravity take them toward the plate and they focused more on the location of their pitches rather than on the velocity. Gaining weight to extend your professional baseball career on the surface sounds idiotic, but there may be a method to this madness.Â
