CBS NEWSMAN MORLEY SAFER DEAD AT AGE 84; RETIRED DAYS AGO
1
Television journalist Morley Safer, who made his reputation as a Vietnam War correspondent for CBS and then became a mainstay on the network’s “60 Minutes” show for 46 years, died at age 84 on Thursday, a few days after his retirement, the network announced. Safer, whom CBS said was in “declining health,” died at his home in Manhattan. The long-running news show had paid tribute to his work Sunday. In a final posting on Twitter on Sunday Safer wrote, “It’s been a wonderful run, and I want to thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our @60Minutes broadcast. Thank you!” REUTERS
SENATORS INTRODUCE BILL TO BLOCK EXPANSION OF FBI HACKING
2
A small group of bipartisan senators introduced a bill Thursday that would block a pending judicial rule change allowing U.S. judges to issue search warrants for remote access to computers in any jurisdiction, even overseas, arguing the change would expand the FBI’s hacking authority. The one-page legislation from Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden and Kentucky Republican Rand Paul would undo the change to procedural rules governing the court system adopted by the Supreme Court in a private vote last month, without congressional involvement. Montana Republican Steve Daines and Democrats Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Jon Tester of Montana are co-sponsoring the Stopping Mass Hacking bill. Magistrate judges can order searches only within their courts’ jurisdiction, typically limited to a few counties. REUTERS
MOTORISTS ON MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY TO HIT NEAR-RECORD NUMBERS
3
The number of Americans traveling by car for the Memorial Day holiday will hit an 11-year high this year, fueled by a growing economy and low gasoline prices, the nation’s largest motorists’ advocacy group said Thursday. AAA projected 33.9 million people will hit the road and drive 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday period, the most since 37.3 million in 2005. The expectation for strong driving numbers is welcome news for U.S. refiners, who are banking on the summer driving season to resurrect profits that plummeted during the recent fall and winter seasons.

City joins forces with Marvel to prepare kids for villainous weather Comic book featuring Ready Girl and The Avengers teaches youngsters what to do in emergencies like a devastating hurricane. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Who you gonna call when the next hurricane or superstorm hits? For children in New York City, the answer is Ready Girl and Marvel superheroes The Avengers. Together with Marvel Custom Solutions, NYC Emergency Management introduced Thursday a new custom comic book aimed at teaching kids about knowing what to do when severe weather hits their communities — especially with hurricane season creeping up next month. The comic — called “Against The Wind” — features Ready Girl, an emergency-preparedness superhero introduced last October by NYC Emergency Management, working together with Marvel’s The Avengers to take on an incoming tropical storm that could bring hurricane force winds and heavy rain. According to the city, Ready Girl realized she had superpowers for emergencies during Superstorm Sandy — which

devastated large parts of the city — when she saved her family from heavy winds and rising water. “The Avengers were formed when a group of Marvel’s heroes came together to combat a threat too dire for any one of them to handle alone,” said Mark Basso, editor of the custom Avengers comic featuring Ready Girl. “In that same spirit, we’re proud to team up with NYC Emergency Management to help communicate this important message to kids by entertaining them with an action-packed adventure story while passing along these crucial lessons.” After getting wind of the incoming storm in the comic, Ready Girl reaches out to kids hanging out in a nearby playground and warns them of the danger. She then advises the children to get ready, get set and get ready to go.
A super message As part of her message, Ready Girl tells children how important it is to make a plan that involves having at least two phone numbers — a local and out-of-state one — that they can call in case of an emergency. Children are urged to practice the plan
And although the heroes defeat Whirlwind — a villain who represents the incoming “force of nature” — the comic ends with a question if there is more for the heroes to battle. To launch the comic book, Ready Girl — along with Iron Man — visited P.S. 39 in Brooklyn where she showed third-graders what they should know about the city’s six evacuation zones. year, the emergency superhero has been visiting dozens of schools, community centers and organizations across the five boroughs. “This project is a creative way to get kids excited about preparedness,” said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “If we can engage them from an early age, the hope is that they can use this information throughout their lives.”

Thousands of religious services will focus on mental health this weekend City officials have created a tool kit to help clergy members reach out to their communities on the issue and break down stigmas. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Religious leaders across the city will dedicate this weekend’s services to ending the stigma of mental illness. Starting on Friday, New York City will host the first-ever Weekend of Faith for Mental Health, where 1,000 houses of worship will speak to their congregations about mental health. According to the city, one out of five New Yorkers deal with a mental health challenge every year. Depression is the most common issue, with over half a million adult New Yorkers estimated to be diagnosed with it. Even with the large number, less than 40 percent have reported to receive any care for it. First lady Chirlane McCray, along with other

people really trust them for advice, they trust them to give good information and they’re exactly the kind of people we need to raise awareness,” McCray said. In order to provide support for the congregations participating over the weekend, the city has created a tool kit for clergy members that offers key talking points, myths and facts about mental health, suggested uses of the tool kit

NYPD officers disciplined in ongoing corruption probe A high-ranking New York City police commander became the latest officer to face discipline as a result of a wide-ranging federal corruption probe that stretches from the police department to City Hall, officials said on Wednesday. Inspector Peter DeBlasio was transferred from his post in Brooklyn to desk duty “in connection with the ongoing joint investigation by the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” the department said in a statement.
In addition, Michael Milici, a detective who was previously reassigned, has been fired, the department said. Nearly a dozen officers, many of them senior commanders, have been disciplined in connection with the probe, which is examining whether police officers accepted gifts and trips from businessmen in exchange for official actions. Several federal and state agencies are pursuing overlapping investigations that have extended to Mayor Bill
de Blasio’s fundraising activities. Mayor de Blasio, who is no relation to Inspector DeBlasio, has said he and his administration did not commit any wrongdoing and are cooperating with authorities. Stuart Slotnick, a lawyer for Peter DeBlasio, said the officer had voluntarily answered questions from federal investigators but chose not to testify before a grand jury. “The NYPD’s action in modifying his duty assignment is unfortunate in light of the
absence of mental illness but also includes emotional, psychological and social well-being. Clergy are also advised to let people know that mental health issues are treatable and there is help out there. “ThriveNYC awareness weekend makes us stop whispering about mental illness and speak openly on helping those who need our strength and support,” said Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis. Through ThriveNYC, clergy are also providing opportunities to take part in programs such as a virtual learning center featuring educational videos, tip sheets and links to resources. The city is also working with the houses of worship to host mental health first aid training, so people can be trained at sites they feel comfortable with. “Though people often worry about their physical health, they tend to often not pay attention to their mental health,” said Rev. T.K. Nakagaki, Buddhist Council of New York. “We all need to have a wholesome and healthy mind, as well as body.”

Rikers officers, employees, inmates indicted in smuggling scheme The Bronx District Attorney’s office announced that 17 people, including two correctional officers, were indicted on charges related to the alleged smuggling of contraband into Rikers Island on Thursday. The accused face 84 counts of various charges, including bribery, bribe receiving, promoting prison contraband, attempted possession and attempted sale of controlled substances and conspiracy. The two correctional officers and a cook at the facility are also charged with official misconduct. The arrests were conducted over the span of six months and encompass three alleged schemes. One indictment charges that correctional officer Kevin McKoy, 31, allegedly earned about $10,000 smuggling in scalpels wrapped in duct tape, suboxone strips and synthetic marijuana to inmates. Prosecutors said

inmates would call family members or friends and ask them to give contraband and cash to McKoy, who would then contact them to arrange for the pickup of the items. Prosecutors said McKoy was arrested with seven scalpels tucked into the legs of his long underwear; nine others were discovered in his apartment. McKoy allegedly admitted to investigators that those scalpels were intended to be smuggled into the prison, and that he had been providing inmates with contraband for about a year. In a separate indictment, correctional officer
Mohammed Sufian, 25, is accused of smuggling tobacco into the facility for $1,000. He was arrested in February. Darnell Wilson, 27, was a cook at the prison who was arrested at the front gate of the facility with synthetic marijuana and tobacco inside his shoes, according to prosecutors. He allegedly told investigators he was receiving $200 a week since the summer of 2015 for bringing in the contraband. “These alleged schemes fed the climate of danger and fear that makes Rikers Island notorious for brutality, and they reveal the true scope of corruption that goes far beyond its shoreline,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark wrote in a statement. “But these cases also show our determination to work with DOI to prosecute any and all perpetrators of crime inside Rikers Island.” CHRIS CAESAR

Egyptian aviation minister said a terrorist attack was more likely than a technical failure. An EgyptAir jet carrying 66 passengers and crew from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean on Thursday in what Egypt said could have been a terrorist attack. The Egyptian civil aviation ministry initially said Greek authorities had found “floating material” and life jackets likely to be from the plane, an Airbus A320. Greek defense sources told Reuters the material was discovered in the sea 230 miles south of the island of Crete. However, late on Thursday EgyptAir Vice President Ahmed Adel told CNN that the wreckage had not been found. “We stand corrected on finding the wreckage because what we identified is not a part of our plane. So the search and rescue is still going on,” Adel said. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered the civil aviation ministry, the army’s search and rescue center, the navy, and the air force to take all necessary measures to locate debris from the aircraft. In a statement issued by his office, Sisi also ordered an investigative committee formed by the civil aviation ministry to immediately start investigating the causes of the plane’s disappearance. Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said it was too early to rule out any explanation for the crash, including an attack like the one blamed for bringing down a Rus-
sian airliner over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last year. The country’s aviation minister said a terrorist attack was more likely than a technical failure. Officials from multiple U.S. agencies told Reuters that a U.S. review of satellite imagery so far had not produced any signs of an explosion aboard the EgyptAir flight. The U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the conclusion was the result of a preliminary examination of imagery and cautioned against media reports suggesting the United States believed a bomb was responsible for the crash. They said the United States has not ruled out any possible causes for the crash, including mechanical failure, terrorism or a deliberate act by the pilot or crew. Greece had deployed aircraft and a frigate to search for the missing plane. Egypt said it would lead the investigation and France would participate. Paris said three investigators would arrive in Egypt on Thursday evening. In Washington, President Barack Obama received a briefing on the disappearance from his adviser for homeland security and counter-terrorism, the White House said. A White House spokesman said it was too early to know the cause of the crash and offered condolences. Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said the Airbus swerved 90 degrees to the left, spun through 360 degrees to the right and plunged from 37,000 feet to 15,000 before vanishing from Greek radar screens. WHAT TRUMP’S OPPONENTS DON’T GET If you listen to the most ardent critics of Donald Trump, they describe him like a raging monster from an old Japanese movie: rising to pulverize the political establishment, eviscerate the electoral process and decimate the institutions of power — all while mainstream politicos run screaming through the streets. And if you listen to his fans, um, you’ll hear the same thing. I believe this is why the efforts to stop Trump’s march on the White House have so far proven impotent. His foes have not yet realized that the way they are attacking is making him stronger, not weaker. Just like one of those movie menaces, he is absorbing every missile aimed at him and turning it into energy for his rampaging campaign. How is he pulling this off ? How has a new poll

So whenever he is disparaged as someone who doesn’t understand how government works, his fans effectively shout back “But government does not work, that’s why we want Trump!” Put even more simply: When protesters shout that his speeches should not be heard, when pundits paint him as a buffoon, when tweeters chortle about his hair and newspapers scream he must be stopped — it all reinforces the idea that Trump threatens the existence of all the political elites, power brokers and insiders. And yeah, that does not hurt him. Indeed, his fans — like Godzilla wading into Tokyo — are eating it up.

THE FUN STARTS HERE
Ryan Gosling finally gets to be funny A serious actor goes goofball as a bumbling private investigator in “The Nice Guys.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
“Just take a nap through the interview if you want. I won’t judge you,” Ryan Gosling deadpans. It’s 8:30 on a Friday night after a long week when the actor calls from Los Angeles. We’re supposed to talk about “The Nice Guys,” a comedic thriller by Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”). It’s a chance for Gosling, a serious actor with a strange sense of humor, to cut loose, even do
slapstick. Quickly, his goofy side is activated. “Just turn on your recorder and I’ll do a version of ‘End of the Road’ by Boyz II Men, all four parts at the same time.” And so we begin. You get to do a lot of physical comedy here. Most of your back catalog is serious dramas. I dabbled in it in kids’ television. I did a show called “Breaker High” where they could have cared less what we did. So we tried to squeeze in a lot of physical comedy. I grew up on that stuff. Slapstick and broad comedies have always been some of my favorite films. But it just didn’t seem like [comedies] were
in the cards for me. When this came up, I read it as a huge opportunity for physical comedy.
Immediately we started having the most serious conversation about the dumbest thing ever.
One scene has you repeatedly kicking a bathroom door while you’re on the can and fumbling with a gun and a lit cigarette. I didn’t know how Russell [Crowe] was going to react to it. As far as I knew he thought this was a relatively straight noir with some funny twists and turns. I was working on the stall gag and I thought I was alone. Then I smelled smoke, and I saw Russell was watching me. It was terrifying, but then he said, “If you kick with the other foot it will bounce back further.”
Was the part where you do your best Lou Costello gasp after seeing a dead body something you came up with? That was more, “It’s 4 in the morning and it’s 10 below zero and you’re trying to figure out how to handle seeing a dead body for the first time.” I grew up on Abbott and Costello, and it’s rare to get an opportunity to nod to that. That, and I was just really trying to keep myself awake.

You can be funny in some of your dramas. Even in dramas I always
try and sneak in jokes. Most people don’t want to allow chances for humor. But it’s not realistic for things to always be completely serious. Sometimes humor can make things more impactful in a dramatic way. How long did it take for you to ditch your facial hair here? I kept trying to shave it but it kept growing back. Facial hair, it just won’t relent. Being a man is the worst. Hashtag.

••••• “Neighbors 2” has at least two good reasons to exist. For one, it allows Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron to, well, do another “Neighbors.” Each was peak-self in the first, and they’re talented enough to find new spins on their dumb characters, especially in a scene where they each take turns struggling epically to spell the word “sorority.” Speaking of which, that’s the second, more noble reason “Neighbors 2” isn’t a no-brainer sequel. This go, the nemeses are house of girls led by Chloe Grace Moretz’s Shelby. They don’t want to just make some noise; they want to escape four years of frat parties stocked with guys who wear shirts that read “No Means Yes.” They don’t want to be kicked out, but
if they stay they may ruin their next-door neighbors’ lives. It’s a catch-22, with both sides alternately sympathetic and juvenile. It’s also progressive — ostentatiously progressive. But if all “Neighbors 2” was well-meaning it might have eventually proven tiresome. But it knows to be hilarious while being angry. Think piece-y points come in the form of gut-busting satirical jabs. There are lots and lots of dildo jokes, one of them deployed by Kelsey Grammer. Actually, “Neighbors 2” has a third raison d’etre: It’s a healthy reminder that Efron is a national treasure … in these two “Neighbors” films. Gone is the smirking confidence his exfratboy rocked through most of the first; he spends the majority of “2” crestfallen, whimpering about his friends’ successes and his obsolescence. It’s hard not to feel bad for Efron, an actor of limited powers — just as it’s hard not to find his sorrow a source of perfectly timed and delivered hilarity. Make a third one just for him. MATT PRIGGE
Director: Shane Black Stars: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling Rating: R
••••• The mystery yarn in “The Nice Guys” may be only worth halffollowing, as they so often are in detective fiction. But every second demands your attention. It’s a brightly colored confection crammed with goodies. Watching it, you can picture its makers — director Shane Black and his co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi — agonizing over the script’s every inch: making sure each quip was jot-down-able, each plot turn surprising, each plant given a showstopping payoff. In an era of sloppy blockbusters that settle for stuff and clang, it’s a meticulous entertainment with a serious case of OCD. Russell Crowe is all low growls and doughy shambling about as Jackson Healy, an “enforcer” who winds up mired in a convoluted missing person
case involving politicians, snappily-dressed hitmen and the then-thriving Detroit auto industry. So does doofus P.I. Holland March (Ryan Gosling), whose meet-cute with Jackson involves him barging into his swank rental home and calmly, efficiently breaking his arm. “The Nice Guys” isn’t about much at all beyond how clever Black — the architect of the buddy action comedy, with his script for “Lethal Weapon” — is as a writer. At least he lives up to the hype, delivering a profane masterpiece jam-packed with sour one-liners (“Marriage is when you buy a house for someone you hate,” grouches Jackson) and tight, playful construction. Even when the script is simply trying to get to the next narrative sign post, it does so creatively, even loopily. And the sacred text is jazzily interpreted by his two leads, particularly Gosling, finally fully activating his full-on goofy side, complete with regular girl shrieks. Like “Mad Max: Fury Road,” it’s an old pro showing the newbies how it’s done. MP
Director: Josh Kriegman, Elyse Steinberg Genre: Documentary Rating: R
••••• Like a super-sized episode of “Veep” but real and just as funny, “Weiner” beholds the apocalypse that was Anthony Weiner’s mayoral bid to rule New York City — the one undone by the “Carlos Danger” business and its attendant peen pics. It’s been three years since his epic flame-out, but instead of clarity we see only chaos. If anything the world seemed to have more of an idea of who Weiner was then than now: that he was a perv, reduced to a punchline so juicy even Wolf Blitzer got in a good joke. “Weiner” isn’t so quick to judge. By turns a comedy of humiliation, a political satire and a Bergmanesque marital drama, it’s not an apologia so much as a clarification — proof that he’s a deeply, profoundly

complicated figure. Weiner allowed the filmmakers to film him two years after his first downfall in 2011. The dust had settled, he assumed, and cameras were there to prove how wrong he was. Where the media coverage quickly zeroed in on his horndog-ness and nothing but, “Weiner” reminds us what a passionate, noble pol he could be — sometimes. It never lets him off the hook, even as it depicts something far more disturbing than a guy with control issues. It shows how tech and a decaying media have turned everyone into short-sighted fools totally fine with destroying a man who could have destroyed himself anyway. And it has an equally fascinating figure in Huma Abedin, Weiner’s alternately shell-shocked and sharp-witted wife. Her heated stares with her husband are something else, but even they can’t touch upsetting scenes where journos and even a porn star think nothing of humiliating her for clickbait or a joke. MP

Kristen Schaal on the 100th episode of ‘Bob’s Burgers’ on the show? Yes! We record together in a room in L.A. and the cast members in New York get together and call in. They want us to play with each other and improvise off one another just to push jokes further and find moments you wouldn’t figure out in your head when writing it.
The actress dishes on Louise as an adult and how people don’t go out for beers in L.A. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue
jennifer.logue@metro.us
When asked what “the burger of the day should be,” Kristen Schaal responds with a giggle: “I didn’t get my puns ready for this interview! Maybe a ‘bottom-out burger?’” It’s close to lunchtime, so the actress, who voices Louise on “Bob’s Burgers” —which celebrates its 100th episode Sunday — is hungry and plans to grab a falafel sandwich (what would Bob say!) after this interview. Before she chows down, we chatted with Schaal about where she finds inspiration for Louise, the show’s continued success and what’s next. This all must be so surreal. Are you a big fan of “Bob’s Burgers” yourself? I am so proud of it. I have three shows saved up on my DVR. I feel like it’s one of those shows where people say, “Oh, I love ‘Bob’s Burgers’” and I say, “Me too!” I’m incredibly proud. It sets a marker of what a show should be. Where do you find inspiration for Louise? Louise has developed as a piece of my personal-

ity. It’s fun to not have a filter and say whatever comes into your head. My childhood self comes out a little and I put a hipness on top of that. She’s definitely a version of me. Anything you can relate to with her? She’s definitely braver than I was. I was always afraid of authority, unlike Louise. But I also looked up to my older brother, which Louise does with her older brother and sister. When you’re a kid, you just go with whatever impulse you have. You can’t mask it. Like she can’t help but slap Boo Boo. (Laughs) What has been the most epic moment for
PROVIDED
Louise so far? When Logan took her hat. That was a very big episode for her. We’ve never seen Louise without her hat. We got to see how serious she is about wearing that hat everyday. Where do you see her 10 years from now? In 10 years, she’ll be 19, so I guess she’ll be in college. Whatever she does, it will be a job where she can manipulate people or things. (Laughs) Do you get a lot of creative freedom
What’s it like recording lines in a group as opposed to solo? It’s fun. It takes a little bit longer than if we were recording solo. And when I don’t see [the other cast members], I miss them. It’s nice. Do you guys hang out after work? We do! In New York we used to always get beers after, but in L.A. things are different. Nobody gets beers here. (Laughs) I think people just go back to work. It doesn’t feel like a job to me, either. People will ask, “Are you working this week?” And I’m like, “No.” But then they’re like, “But don’t you have a table read for ‘Bob’?” The 100th episode of “Bob’s Burgers” airs May 22 at 9:30 p.m. on Fox.

Mets, Yanks tackle sub-.500 clubs This weekend the Mets play host to the Milwaukee Brewers while the Yankees continue their west coast road trip in Oakland against the Athletics. Steven Matz (5-1, 2.86 ERA) gets the ball for the Mets on Friday night after missing his last start for precautionary elbow examinations. Matz has never faced the Brewers but his stellar 4.38 K/ BB ratio should aid him against the team with the third-most strikeouts in baseball this season. Countering for the Brewers is Wily Peralta (2-4, 7.30 ERA). The Mets had their way with Peralta when he was a member of the Braves last season; in one start (5.0 IP), the Mets tallied five runs on nine hits while inducing three walks. Curtis Granderson has been particularly successful against Peralta in the past (five hits in eight ABs including two HRs). Jacob DeGrom (3-1, 2.50 ERA) will make his first start at home this
month when he takes the mound on Saturday. In two starts at Citi Field this season he’s 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA. Ryan Braun, the Brewers’ most dangerous hitter, is 0-for-10 against DeGrom in his career.  Meanwhile, CC Sabathia is slated to return for the Yankees on Friday night. Things were going well for Sabathia before he hit the DL with a strained groin (2-2, 3.81 ERA, including seven innings of shutout baseball against the Orioles on May 4). The Yankees will be matched up against Sonny Gray, who has gotten off to a poor start in 2016 (3-4, 5.84 ERA). Yankee hitters have generally struggled against Gray, but Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius have had their fair share of success against the Nashville native (6-for-15, two BBs combined). Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 3.51 ERA) will get the ball for the Bombers in Saturday’s mid-afternoon tilt. When New York City FC hosts the rival New York Red Bulls Saturday (3 p.m., FOX) at Yankee Stadium there will be much more at stake than places in the standings. NYCFC is running neck-and-neck with the Montreal Impact for first place, while the Red Bulls are in eighth place of the 10-team Eastern Conference. The host team would like nothing else than to keep its crossriver rivals near the basement, while continuing its march up the ladder.  Coming off an exhilarating 2-1 win in Portland last Sunday at a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC on Wednesday, NYCFC will be looking to avenge losses last season to the Red Bulls. The teams met three times in 2015 — NYCFC’s inaugural campaign — with the Red Bulls winning all three. The more established Red Bulls haven’t lived up to expectations so far this season, however, making Saturday’s tilt all the more important.  Â
NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders will be the key. The veteran is a former MLS champion and coming off recent strong performances filled with highlight-reel saves. His experience in big matches will serve the team well.  Saunders won’t be the only star to take the pitch. NYCFC’s roster seems to be loaded this year, with the likes of David Villa, Mix Diskerud, Tommy McNamara, and Andrea Pirlo leading the way. The Red Bulls will counter with striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, who hopes to reclaim his dominance over the squad. A former English Premier League footballer, Wright-Phillips made his claim as the best player in the rivalry last season when he dominated play. He scored in each of the three matches and four times overall. He netted both goals in the maiden match between the teams, last year on May 10 — a 2-1 Red Bulls victory — and then tallied one more apiece in the remaining two games. The two clubs have only battled once at Yankee Stadium, which means this Saturday’s game will undoubtedly be led by a raucous crowd, itching to gain some revenge.   NYCFC is averaging over 29,000 fans per home

They hope to channel that energy into the hometown players. Rising star forward Kwadwo Poku noted that playing in front of the Yankee Stadium crowd and in front of such a starved fanbase ignites the team to heights not even the most ardent Blue fan can realize. “Every time I see them up there cheering for us, I feel like I can give them everything I have to make them happy, Poku said. “I don’t know how to thank them for supporting us. any time he enters the match, isn’t the only player who thinks playing in front of the home crowd will give NYCFC a decided advantage. Forward Patrick Mullins said the support always feels surreal.   “It’s special,â€? he noted. “The fans really show up, participate and cheer. The atmosphere feels right ‌ like there’s somebody behind us on the pitch pushing us forward.â€?   Forward is the plan for NYCFC as it tries to break the tie atop the standings and pull away from the Impact. The Red Bulls, meanwhile, just hope they can use this tilt as more than just bragging rights in the Metropolitan area, and actually get back into the Eastern Conference race. Â

Hornacek hiring shows that Phil may be willing to adjust his strategies Phil Jackson surprised many by hiring a coach will little “triangle history. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Knicks finished their disappointing campaign with questions abound, but none more than who would lead the team on the sidelines. The situation seems to have been rectified as multiple reports state that Jeff Hornacek will be the next head coach. Hornacek will replace interim head coach Kurt Rambis.  A former Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach, Rambis took the Knicks reigns last season following the firing of Derek Fisher. He amassed a 9-19 mark in New York, making his career coaching record a disastrous 65164. It was thought that Rambis would receive serious consideration for removing the interim tag, as team president Phil
Jackson publicly stated he wanted the next coach to be “comfortable running his beloved triangle offense. But with the hiring of Hornacek, who prefers an up-tempo philosophy, could mean that Jackson will actually relent a bit on his triangular wishes.  Besides, there would’ve also likely been a media, player, fan and owner mutiny if Jackson had actually selected Rambis over a list of candidates that also included David Blatt and Frank Vogel.    Hornacek, 53, may not be as accomplished as Blatt, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals last season, or Vogel, who owned a .580 winning percentage during his six seasons in Indiana, but he’s been lauded for his efforts in Phoenix. The Suns finished with 23 wins last season — 14 of which came with Hornacek, who was fired after just 49 games. He compiled a 101-112 record as the lead man in the desert, and in the unruly Western Conference, that’s considered an achievement.     Despite all of that, pun-

with management gutting the roster over the last couple years and leaving the cupboard dry. Guys like Goran Dragic, who thrived in Miami, and Isaiah Thomas, who became an All-Star in Boston, were swept from the franchise, leaving Hornacek with average talent and malcontents.  Hornacek’s handling of a bad situation may
have been what ultimately attracted Jackson to him. And with a Knicks roster similar in dysfunction and ill-fits, perhaps Jackson figured this was the best fit of the lot.    The most promising sign through all of this is that Jackson actually seems like he’s finally thinking outside of his three-cornered box.
