INSPECTOR GENERAL: HILLARY CLINTON VIOLATED EMAIL POLICY
1
Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while U.S. secretary of state broke government rules and was not approved by State Department security officials, according to an internal government watchdog’s report released on Wednesday. Clinton’s use of the private email server in her home in Chappaqua, New York, for government purposes has prompted several investigations, including an ongoing probe by the FBI. The report by the department’s inspector general cited “longstanding, systemic weaknesses” with State Department records that predated Clinton’s tenure, and found problems with the email record-keeping of some of her predecessors. TSA HEAD: US AIRPORTS STILL UNDERSTAFFED FOR PEAK TRAVEL
2
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is taking several steps to shorten airport lines including moving officers to different posts, but still lacks the staffing to handle peak travel times, Administrator Peter Neffenger said in a Congressional hearing Wednesday. According to Neffenger, TSA is seeing how it can re-deploy officers who are trained to detect irregular passenger behavior to posts where they check traveler documents, thereby freeing up others to staff the physical screening machines. “There are efficiencies we can gain in the way we deploy our people,” Neffenger said. A shortage of staff and a surge in air travelers has created a nightmare scenario for the U.S. agency, with airport wait times in places like Chicago having stretched beyond two hours. REUTERS
TORNADOS, STORMS HIT US GREAT PLAINS
3
Two people were critically injured and buildings were damaged in southwest Kansas as several tornados and storms hit the U.S. Great Plains, a local official and a meteorologist said on Wednesday. The two injured people in Ford County, Kansas were brought to a local hospital for treatment and had been released, according to J.D. Gilbert, interim county administrator and spokesman for the county. As many as six unconfirmed tornados hit an area west of Dodge City, Gilbert said, destroying some homes and a county building with offices and landfill equipment. Farms and ranches were also damaged, he said. A tornado was also reported in Oklahoma, just west of Tulsa, along with severe storms in the area on Tuesday evening, said Ariel Cohen, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. In the case of the mystery man who wandered into Government Center station in March and then posted pictures from his escapades online, police are willing to look the other way. The MBTA Transit Police have posted video of the break-in — the man pretty much sauntered right through the automatic sliding doors at 3:30 a.m. — and on Wednesday declared they wouldn’t press charges. This after T spokesman Joe Pesaturo told Boston Magazine in March that police will be “reaching out to this individual to learn more about his/her visit,” and that “there is no reason anyone should be entering the enclosed area which is circled by a se-

From the police Here’s the full update from TPD about the late-night escapade: In the early morning hours of March 9, 2016 a construction crew was inside the MBTA’s Government Center station working toward the completion of the station’s renovations. As the video depicts, the interior of the station was lighted, at approximately 3:30

moving equipment in and out of the building, Pesaturo told Metro on Wednesday, adding that he would not describe the incident as a lapse in
security. Officials did not say whether they were able to get in touch with the anonymous photographer. Metro reached out to the Reddit account from which the photos were posted, but has not heard back. In an interview, Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said authorities have determined the breach was a harmless, isolated incident. “He didn’t have any malicious intent, I believe, and I don’t believe at any point anyone was in danger,” Sullivan said. He also said he didn’t believe anyone else managed to sneak inside the station while work was underway. It opened to the public March 21, and entrances are locked at night when trains are out of service. What would Sullivan’s message be for anyone else who might want to get a sneak peek at a T stop before it opens? “We advise against it,” Sullivan said.

MSPCA goat meet-and-greet planned after ‘overwhelming’ adoption interest Organization received more than 200 inquiries for 46 farm animals in its care SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
Who knew how much love there was for goats around here? The response the MSPCA has gotten from its call-out to help 46 goats released into its
care has been “overwhelming,” said spokesman Rob Halpin. More than 200 emails and phone calls have come in inquiring about the farm animals, which are in the care of the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen. So the farm is inviting those interested in adopting all those goats to a “meet and greet” this Saturday, likely 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., although the timing is subject to change.
“The team is asking for patience as they work through all of calls and emails, and will be responding to everyone who has reached out.” Halpin
Those who stop by can apply to take some goats back to the homestead (you should be willing to take two or more, and you should probably have experience working with livestock, the MSPCA has said). “This will be a prescreening event,” Halpin said. “Nevins Farm will accept applications, secure adopter references and review home-environment scenarios to ensure they are safe and comfortable for goats.” None of the goats have found new homes, Halpin said. Would-be owners still need to be vetted. Those interested can contact the organization at barnstaff@mspca.org. “The team is asking for patience as they work through all of calls and emails, and will be

responding to everyone who has reached out,” he said. Nevins Farm is at 400 Broadway in Methuen and is less than an hour’s drive outside of Boston.
Halpin said the farm has already spent $3,000 to care for such a huge pack of goats, and could use a bit of help. Donations are taxdeductable.

Roxbury woman pleads not guilty in beating death of her 3-year-old stepson Investigators claim that Maria Buie was alone with the child after other people had last seen him uninjured. Kenai Whyte HANDOUT
JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
The Roxbury woman accused of beating 3-year-old Kenai Whyte to death earlier this year pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder at her arraignment Wednesday. Maria Buie, 23, who was already held on charges of assault and battery, pleaded not guilty to the April charges of second-degree murder in connection to Kenai’s death Feb. 2, WCVB reported. Kenai was found unresponsive in his home on Alpine Street on the night of Jan. 31 and died from his injuries two days later, according to Suffolk District Attorney Jake Wark. Authorities determined that blunt force trauma led to Kenai’s death, which was ruled a homicide, WCVB added.
Investigators claimed Buie was alone with the child after others had last seen him uninjured. “She has helped raise him since he was a baby,” Buie’s lawyer, Sam Zaganjori, told the Boston Globe. “She has never hurt him and did not commit the acts of which she is accused. She is not guilty and is prepared to fight the charges against her.” The initial charges of assault and battery against Buie will be dropped because she was indicted for murder, the Globe added in a separate article. The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families had an open case regarding Kenai’s family when he died, Boston.com stated, adding that the district attorney’s office and Gov. Charlie Baker have called for an investigation into how the department handled the case.
Candy factory penalized $46K after worker loses finger An accident at a Cambridge candy factory that severed a temporary worker’s finger might have been prevented if the facility had met federal safety and health standards, Occupational Health and Safety Administration investigators said Wednesday. The incident, which happened at Cambridge Brands on Jan. 6, prompted an investigation into the company’s production practices as well as MJR Management, which runs Snelling Staffing Services and arranged for the temporary worker’s employment at the factory. Cambridge Brands is a unit of Chicago-based Toostie Roll Industries. According to the Boston Globe, the factory produces mostly Charleston
Chew and Junior Mints candies. On Feb. 2, OSHA said its inspection revealed that Cambridge “failed to guard moving parts of the candy-wrapping machine against unintended contact, exposing workers to possible broken bones, soft-tissue damage and amputation.” Neither the staffing agency nor the factory “adequately” trained the worker “about mechanical and noise hazards and safeguards.” Cambridge Brands now faces $46,000 in proposed penalties, while Snelling Staffing Services and its owner, MJR Management, face $9,000 in penalties. Both companies have 15 business days to comply with or contest the findings. CHRIS CAESA

Religious leaders arrested in protest of controversial natural gas pipeline Police arrest the protesters. ALEXIS SACHDEV
Boston-area clergy demonstrate against West Roxbury Lateral construction. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Sixteen interfaith clergy members were arrested Wednesday morning in West Roxbury during a protest of the West Roxbury Lateral Pipeline. The religious leaders, who gathered to pray in front of a gate to the metering and regulating station at 10 Grove St., marched to the pipeline site and stopped construction. The group, which grew to nearly 100 participants, prayed and sang, and sat on the edge of the pit where the pipeline is being laid until police arrested them for trespassing. The Rev. Anne Bancroft, a member of Resist the Pipeline and minister of Theodore Parker Church, was among those arrested. Bancroft said she has been protesting the WRLP for more than a year. Acknowledging the danger of protesting at an active construction site, Bancroft said she felt the group’s actions were necessary. “Many of us wish there was a different way to stop this situation, the minister said. “To a large extent [this protest] is an action of last recourse, that when we feel voiceless or unheard, the only option available is to try to stop construction. “I think of this struggle as a very spiritual struggle, Bancroft continued.
“We’re making choices about our relationship with each other and how the Earth sustains us. Those are fundamentally spiritual questions. The controversial pipeline, a project of Spectra Energy, will connect to National Grid’s pre-existing pipeline network to satisfy surging demand for natural gas. A National Grid spokesman told the Boston Globe that 98 percent of West Roxbury residents have natural gas. But protestors, including those from Resist the Pipeline, blast Spectra for local and environmental concerns. The high-pressure pipeline puts nearby schools and residential areas, as well as an active quarry, at risk from an explosion, according to Resist the Pipeline. The group denies National Grid’s perceived energy crisis in Massachusetts and opposes further development of fossil fuel resources and infrastructure. Bancroft said that this protest, and others she’s participated in, were not against construction workers or police officers, but the fracking and natural gas industries, and Spectra. “Our feeling is that the company that stands to profit hugely from this is Spectra, she said. “I don’t know how many of its people would choose to live in this community with a pipeline. “It’s no small surprise that the route that’s been chosen [for the pipeline] does not affect the more affluent neighborhoods, but that’s not a good reason to put people at risk.

House Speaker Ryan says he hasn’t decided on Trump The 46-year-old speaker is the only member of the Republican congressional leadership who has not formally embraced the presumptive GOP nominee. Ryan is expected to chair the party’s nominating convention. Paul Ryan, the top U.S. elected Republican, on Wednesday continued to withhold his support from Donald Trump for the party’s presidential nomination, saying he is not ready to endorse the real estate billionaire, a political neophyte. Ryan, the speaker of the House of Representatives, brushed aside reports that he was ready to endorse Trump during a meeting with reporters in the Capitol. “I haven’t made a decision, he said, adding that he had no timetable for doing so. cerns among some Republicans over whether they can unify behind him, given his harsh rhetoric and shifting policy positions in a brutal primary fight that once had 17 candidates. Ryan was asked Wednesday about Trump’s comment this week that New Mexico Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, who had declined to attend a Trump rally, was not doing her job. Ryan said Martinez was a “great governor and “a friend of mine, and said he would leave it at that. Ryan said his staff and Trump’s were in contact virtually daily. “I want this to be a sincere, deliberative process, Ryan said. He dismissed suggestions that the Trump campaign was try-
ing to pressure him, saying, “I don’t worry about that stuff. The speaker faces pressure from inside his party to smooth things over and form a united front against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in November. Ryan’s statement earlier this month that he was not ready to support Trump was unusual and seen as an effort to keep some distance from Trump and protect Ryan’s own presidential prospects for 2020. Ryan said his staff and the Trump campaign have been discussing a wideranging policy agenda for the campaign, covering issues from health care to taxes and national security. REUTERS

Senators urge House to move on the aviation-security bill The top members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee have urged their counterparts in the House of Representatives to move forward on Senate legislation to boost aviation security and authorize the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration. In a May 24 letter released Wednesday, the senate panel’s Republican chairman, John Thune of
South Dakota, and its top Democrat, Bill Nelson of Florida, cautioned House lawmakers that Congress has only six weeks left to approve legislation before an FAA funding patch expires in mid-July. The letter, addressed to House Transportation Chairman Bill Schuster of Pennsylvania and that panel’s top Democrat, Peter DeFazio of Oregon, urged movement on a
Senate bill that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support last month. “We believe that this legislation represents a model for House action, which is essential to avoiding another round of funding extensions that will be disruptive to the aviation industry and only delay much-needed reforms,” Thune and Nelson said. Eleven states sue US government over transgender bathroom policy Eleven U.S. states sued the Obama administration Wednesday, seeking to overturn a directive from the federal government this month that public schools should allow transgender students to use the bathroom matching their gender identity. Ramping up the culture wars in America, the states, led by Texas, accused the federal government of rewriting laws by “administrative fiat.” “Defendants have conspired to turn workplace and educational settings across the country into laboratories for a massive social experiment,

flouting the democratic process and running roughshod over commonsense policies protecting children and basic privacy rights,” the lawsuit stated. Nine of the 11 states are led by Republican governors.
Amid a national debate over transgender rights, the Obama administration May 13 told U.S. public schools transgender students must be allowed to use the bathroom of their choice, upsetting Republicans and raising the likelihood of fights over federal funding and legal authority. The state of Texas is the lead plaintiff and was joined by Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia, plus the Arizona Department of Education and the governor of Maine. Italian navy says migrant boat flipped off the coast of Libya; five dead Photographs show the blue fishing boat rocking violently before capsizing, sending migrants tumbling into the sea. Some climbed onto the hull of the overturned vessel, while others swam for life boats or toward the navy ship.
A large wooden fishing boat overcrowded with migrants capsized off the coast of Libya, the Italian navy said Wednesday, with some 562 people rescued and five found dead. Navy swimmers are also shown pulling migrants in lifebelts toward safety, according to the navy pictures. Women and children were among those rescued, but no details of the migrants’ nationalities have been given. The Italian navy patrol boat Bettica saw the ves-
sel was in difficulty and approached it to hand out life jackets, but before it could begin a rescue the boat flipped over due to the sudden movement of the passengers, a statement said. Navy frigate Bergamini deployed a helicopter, and several rubber motor boats were used in the rescue operations, which have now concluded. The Bettica has already responded to another call for help and is in the process of rescuing 108 migrants from a large rubber
boat, the navy said. Boat arrivals rose sharply this week amid warm weather and calm seas. Italy’s coast guard said 5,600 migrants were rescued Monday and Tuesday, and officials fear numbers will increase as conditions continue to improve. In the past two years, more than 320,000 boat migrants have arrived on Italian shores, and an estimated have 7,000 died in the Mediterranean as they sought to reach Europe. REUTERS

Already we’ve gotten pitches for Tom Hiddleston, Damien Lewis and Jamie Bell — or this wretched world could be unfairly gifted with (almost) everyone’s favorite choice: Idris Elba. But Gillian Anderson has an idea: What about her? Over Twitter the “X-Files” alum teased a poster of her looking badass, accompanied by the words “It’s Bond.
Jane Bond.” It’s not clear how serious she is, but still, can the Internet even handle this? When even the guy who writes the Bond novels freaked out at the idea of a black Bond, won’t the idea of making him a her cause old guard bros to implode a la Yaphet Kotto at the end of “Live and Let Die”? Or maybe we shouldn’t be worried about those guys.

14 FILM The actor gets deep with his new, crazy dark comedy (of sorts) “The Lobster.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Colin Farrell didn’t think “The Lobster” was weird. Sure, it concerns an alternate world in which single people are given 45 days to find a partner, and if they fail they’re turned into an animal. But the actor had seen “Dogtooth.” That film, “Lobster” director Yorgos Lanthimos’ breakthrough, concerned three young adults raised on an isolated estate to believe elaborate and ridiculous lies about the outside world. Farrell and his fellow well-known actors (Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, et al.) knew what they were getting into. “You don’t come across writing that’s that specific, that imbued with whatever meaning you wish to interpret,” Farrell says of the film not being afraid to be difficult and strange and noncommercial. “I felt like it was us gladly stepping into his
Colin Farrell wants you to think In “The Lobster,” in theaters Friday, Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz play two singles living in a world that punishes people not in relationships. A24
world rather than him extending himself into a world that promised international spoils.” “The Lobster” may seem to be a bromide against how we’re conditioned to pair off. But it’s more about forcing us to question notions like our willingness to surrender freedoms and the dark side of communities. “I know as a dad, you want your child to feel special — but not so special that they’re not part of a group. You don’t want your child to be alone,”
Farrell says. “You want them to find a collective of people they can belong to. But to what expense to the individual does belonging to a group compromise a person’s own truths? There’s a lot of stuff in the script and in the film about the choices we will subjugate in the name of staving off our own loneliness. “The system we live within and the rule of law we will completely become complicit [in] can lead to our downfall — just for fear of rocking
the boat, for fear of being outside the ‘human experience,’” he adds. Asking these questions — rather than offering easy, soothing answers — was all part of Lanthimos’ plan. Farrell likes that it doesn’t say one thing. “If there is such a thing as a piece of art being complete, once it’s presented to the outside world, it ceases to belong to the artist anymore. It belongs to the people,” Farrell says. The actor thinks Lanthimos’ films are even more open than that.
“In his films nothing is presented as good or bad or better or worse,” Farrell says. “He seems to have created a cinema that lacks any sense of moralism. Which I love. It asks the audience to find their own very unique perspective. “After shooting it I thought, of all the films I’ve done this is the one I’d love a bunch of film students to watch, and I’d sit on the side and listen to them,” Farrell adds. “I don’t think there’s any one message.”

Daphne Guinness: A rock star for real Am I right in saying that you’re classically trained? Did that inuence your approach to music at all? I’m trying to relearn theory. I suffer from perfect pitch and music theory makes a lot of sense to me; it’s like math and physics. I can get the key immediately by hearing it, but writing [a song] down — other people are faster at that than me. Being classically trained isn’t great for rock ’n’ roll — you can hit the notes, but if you don’t understand the groove or have the beats, gr it’s like you’re not feeling it the song. th Yo were able to work You with producer Tony Visconw ti who is best known for working with David Bowie w for decades. What has that fo been b e like for you?
BO ST O
Daphne Guinness already looks like a rock star. The 48-year-old longtime philanthropist, muse and arts visionary is breaking new ground with her first full-length album, titled “Optimist in Black.â€? The 14-track album was produced by Tony Visconti, David Bowie’s longtime producer, and early releases — including the steampunk ballad “Marionettesâ€? and the addictive “The Long Nowâ€? — provide a taste of what’s to come. The full-length album documents the tragedy, beauty and, of course, great art, from a period of Guinness’ very public life, as written by her own pen.Â
That was a very, very dark period of my life. It was trying to make sense out of poetry and not do what my friends did. I had so many people die on me — it’s too much. And writing about that period of time was helpful?
Guinness’ debut drops May 27. GETTY IMAGES
Tony is Buddha. He’s so amazing. I can’t believe I get to walk into his studio and play what I had. He’s the most musical person on Earth, and a proper artist. He’s not someone who suffers fools, and if you’re not doing [a project] right, he’ll tell you. That speaks volumes. The album is called “Optimist in Black. Are you the “optimist?
Of course, and my writing process is lyrics. Getting it down to 14 songs was really something. I understand the lyrics have to make something so it’s not just a pointless exercise. “Optimist was the material of my depression. If I had gone much deeper then I probably wouldn’t be here.

Absolutely, but I see with my fashion friends, they’re under contract to produce and do collection after another collection. If someone was telling me to [write songs], I would probably get writer’s block. RACHEL RACZKA

How one Crete native landed a dream role with Cirque du Soleil’s “Kurios.” MEGAN JOHNSON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
When Eirini Tornesaki was accepted into Berklee School of Music at age 17, she knew making her way from her native Crete to the acclaimed college in Boston would be a struggle. “Since I was 14, it was my dream to attend,” says Tornesaki, now 24. “I got a $20,000 scholarship, but my parents couldn’t afford it still — even to just fly me there.” Tornesaki had to postpone her dream, but the gifted vocalist has still found her way to the Bay State: She hits Boston as part of Cirque du Soleil’s “Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities,” running under the Big Top at Suffolk Downs through July 10. And Tornesaki’s stunning vocals are just one component of the show, a fusion of music, acrobatic, and comedy set amidst a steampunk Industrial Revolution. Audience members step inside the cabinet of a mad scientist working to invent new
ways to travel to a parallel universe. Everyone from the band members and contortionists to the acrobats and yo-yo masters play a role in the scientist’s journey, which celebrates the greatest inventions of the 19th century, simultaneously spun into a web of “Mad Max”esque chaos. “It’s really celebrating the era of all the great inventions,” says Tornesaki, who performs throughout the show with one of those inventions, a gramophone, propped on her head. “It’s when music became something you could hear in your living room.” A cast of 116 people

from 22 different countries currently tours the U.S. with “Kurios,” and that doesn’t count the various children and spouses who join in. Some 65 trucks transport almost 2,000 tons of equipment from city to city for the show, including three 50-foot trucks just for the artistic department to transport over a hundred intricately made costumes, each spritzed with vodka to maintain their crisp freshness. But not everyone who follows Cirque across the country is a paid member of the cast and crew; some Cirque du Soleil fans are so dedicated, they follow the tour around the coun-
try like fans of the Grateful Dead. Some of them hope to find jobs amongst the crew, in roles ranging from costume maintenance to kitchen service. “We have one girl whose sole job is to prep the mustaches in the show,” says one member of the costume department. And as for Tornesaki, finding her way into Berklee has finally come to fruition. She is studying songwriting through the college’s online program as she tours with Cirque, and managed to stop by the school this week to share her story of life on the road with her fellow students.

20 BOSTON CAR GUIDE
New sports cars that will get your hearts racing Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren and a whole host of others just debuted their latest models. JAVIERA LASTRA AMAYA, MWN
Audi TT RS 2017 A longtime favorite, it’s no great shock the new TT RS 2107 has been one of the most-anticipated premieres of the season. Its five-cylinder 2.5-liter engine comes with 400 horsepower paired to a dual clutch seven-speed transmission that delivers 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds.
Ferrari GTC 4 Lusso Ferrari’s GTC4 Lusso was something of a surprise, with it being what you might describe as the manufacturer’s most comfortable and — yes — family-oriented sports car. However, the Italian stallion hasn’t lost its thrill factor. The equipment under its hood houses a 6,262 cc V12 engine with an impressive 5,750 rpm. Plus, the motor has a top speed of more than 200 miles an hour, as well as being capable of reaching speeds of 60 miles in 3.4 seconds. Thus, the new member of the Ferrari family offers users a daring car but, thanks to its new double-cabin architecture, it has elegance, too.

Porsche 718 Boxster Cayman It’s the second model in Porsche’s rebranded 718 line, joining the 718 Boxster. Its powerful 2.0-liter engine is capable of notching up 300 horsepower, meaning drivers can hit more than 60 miles in 4.7 seconds. The German sports car’s chassis update offers a more agile and dynamic ride, reaching a maximum speed of 170 miles an hour.
Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2
McLaren 570 GT The British firm won over all the attendees of the 2016 Beijing Auto Show with the debut of this impressive sports car. It was claimed that this would be the finest and most luxurious model made by the brand. Indeed, the McLaren 570 GT is built on the idea of delivering ease of use and everyday comfort. To achieve long-distance comfort, the makers have created a new suspension system that has reduced stiffness, while its V8 twin-turbo 3.8-liter engine with 570 horsepower, manages to reach 60 miles in 3.4 seconds.
The Italian brand introduced three new models to the Huracan family, but the highlight was this: the introduction of rear-wheel drive to the LP 580-2, making for a more rebellious ride. Teamed with a V10 5.2-liter engine sending 580 horsepower to the real axle, it’s inarguably an exciting experience. Because of its weight distribution of 40 percent at the front and 60 percent at the rear, power management in this model fuses man and machine as one.

Distracted while driving? Blame your family. Survey shows loved ones a leading cause of people taking eyes off the road. In an age of constant communication and connectivity, it can be difficult to take a break. But drive time is when your phone should take a backseat to safety, say experts. You don’t need to be texting to be distracted by your phone, says Kelly Nantel, vice president of communications and advocacy at the National Safety Council. Even hands-free talking is a major distraction. Research indicates drivers using hand-held and hands-free phones only see about 50 percent of all the information in their driving environment. This phenomenon is known as inattention blindness and is similar to tunnel vision. While multitasking is valued in today’s culture, researchers find that the human brain

If you really care, don’t call to say I love you — instead encourage your family to set everything else aside, disconnect and focus only on the road. To prioritize safety and reduce your risk of being involved in a crash, turn your commute into me time, and your car into a safe sanctuary. The National Safety Council offers some tips to take back your drive. SERGEY PETERMAN - FOTOLIA.COM
doesn’t actually perform two tasks at the same time but rather switches attention between tasks. At your desk, this can be an effective and efficient way to work, but behind the wheel, multitasking can be deadly. From checking GPS, to firing up a drive time
playlist, there are countless smartphone-related reasons why people take their mind off the road. And newer in-vehicle systems allow drivers to call, text, email, update social media and browse the Internet despite research showing these systems cause distraction that can
linger after the driver finishes the task. One of the major reasons drivers are so distracted is one of the most surprising — pressure from your family. Indeed, 82 percent of Americans feel their family pressures them the most — above friends or employ-
•Turn off your phone when you get in the car. •Tell your family (and anyone else expecting to hear from you) that you will be driving and will call or text them when you are parked at your destination. •Send emails and texts before you start driving.
•Return the favor. When friends, family or colleagues are driving, refrain from placing distracting calls or sending texts. Driver distractions have joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and seriousinjury crashes. In recent years, thousands of people have died in crashes when drivers used cellphones. The issue has started capturing the attention of political leaders nationwide and some are taking action to improve laws that promote safe driving, though no law goes far enough, say safety experts, because no law prohibits hands-free use. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving and efforts to end this public health crisis, visit distracteddriving.nsc.org. Driving contains enough risk, so put the phone away and encourage those you love to do the same. STATEPOINT

Boston Cannons in good shape with summer on the horizon Boston’s pro lax team looks like an MLL playoff contender for sure. RICH SLATE @RichSlate
sports@metro.us
With eight games left in the Major League Lacrosse regular season for the Boston Cannons (3-2), there is still plenty of action remaining in what has so far been a highly entertaining campaign. In the five games they have already played, the Cannons have proved that they can compete with just about anyone. They are in fifth-place in the nineteam league, with the top four clubs advancing to the playoffs in August. Boston had won three straight games before falling 14-7 to MLL-leading Ohio (4-1) last Saturday at home. Attackman Will Manny leads MLL in points (15 goals, including two 2-pointers and 11 assists) and goaltender Tyler Fiorito has made the most saves (70) in the league. Faceoff specialist Joe Nardella also has the second-best faceoff percentage in MLL (49/77). With first-year head coach Sean Quirk getting comfortable in his new role, Cannons GM Kevin Barney has been happy with the progress that he’s seen so far

from his team. “We’ve had some good games and then some games where we’ve struggled in dif-
ferent facets,” he noted. “Will [an all-star last season] has taken his game to another level and he continues to get better.
He’s been the leader for us, both on and off of the field.” Midfielder Kevin Buchanan returns to the team after competing for the New England Black Wolves (National Lacrosse League) — a professional indoor team — while rookie defenseman Brandon Mullins will soon report to the Cannons, after

Syracuse’s loss in the NCAA Tournament last weekend. Finally, Tufts attackman and another Boston draft pick John Uppgren’s spectacular collegiate career comes to a close Sunday as the Jumbos bid for their third straight Division 3 title vs. Salisbury. The Cannons hit the road over the next few weekends with games at
Denver (1-3) this Saturday night (8:30, Lax Sports Network) and then at Atlanta (2-2) on Saturday, June 4, before returning to Harvard Stadium to take on Charlotte (31) on Saturday, June 11. With the team starting to see opponents for the second time this season, things like tiebreakers (goal-differential) start to come into play. “It’s a big stretch for us coming up, we’re trying to put five teams behind us,” Barney said. “Home-field in the playoffs doesn’t exist (since it is held at a neutral site) so it essentially doesn’t matter where we finish (1-4). How can we separate from the bottom teams?” Boston is dealing with some nagging ankle injuries to Nardella and star midfielder Max Seibald (five goals, one 2-pointer, two assists) so if they miss another game, expect midfielders like Craig Bunker (26/47 on faceoffs), Justin Turri (six goals, one 2-pointer, two assists) and Brent Adams (five goals, three assists) to step up into bigger roles. “We just want to avoid losing streaks, make sure we’re healthy and playing well over the last four games [heading into the postseason],” explained Barney. “The league has been very competitive this season; nobody is a walkover, by any means.”
