SURVIVORS TO ATTEND HIROSHIMA EVENT

At least three atomic bomb survivors will attend an event in Hiroshima on Friday when President Barack Obama becomes the first incumbent U.S. leader to visit the site of the world’s first atomic bombing, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. Obama has said he will not apologize or address the debate on whether the Aug. 6, 1945, dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and on Nagasaki three days later was justified, but will honor all those who lost their lives in World War II. He will be accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the visit. REUTERS
MIGRANT BOAT CAPSIZED, SECOND IN TWO DAYS
2
A migrant boat capsized in the Mediterranean on Thursday and while about 100 passengers were rescued, an unknown number are feared dead, officials said. All told, the Italian coast guard said it had helped save 4,000 migrants today, in 22 operations. That brings the total number Italy has helped rescue since Monday to more than 10,000 — a sign that Europe’s immigration crisis is far from over. Separately, Libya’s coast guard said it had stopped six boats carrying more than 750 migrants off the country’s western coast, and had recovered four bodies. Thursday’s shipwreck was the second in two days as sea crossings accelerate amid good weather. Five people were confirmed to have died when a large fishing boat flipped over in the sea on Wednesday. Europe’s worst immigration crisis since World War II has led to more than 8,000 deaths in 2½ years, the International Organization for Migration estimates. REUTERS
FIRST BACTERIA RESISTANT TO ALL ANTIBIOTICS
3
U.S. health officials on Thursday reported the first case in the country of a patient with an infection resistant to all known antibiotics, and expressed grave concern that the superbug could pose serious danger for routine infections if it spreads. “We risk being in a post-antibiotic world,” said Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, referring to the urinary tract infection of a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman who had not traveled within the prior five months. Frieden, speaking at a National Press Club luncheon in Washington, D.C., said the infection was not controlled even by colistin, an antibiotic that is reserved for use against “nightmare bacteria.” REUTERS
Low-income workers, such as those who work in the fast-food and retail industries, often have a hard time paying rent in New York City. GETTY IMAGES
Min. wage to live in NYC tops $30 an hour Report: Fastfood employees would have to work 119 hours a week to afford the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
No one needs to tell New Yorkers how expensive it is to live in their city. But a report released this week made it clear just how inhospitable it can be for minimumwage workers at the bottom of the economic ladder. According to an analysis by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a “fair market rent” for a two-bedroom apartment in New York state is $1,388. To afford that, household income would need to be $55,508 annually. That breaks down to an hourly income of $26.29 for a 40-hour work week.
New York state is fourth on the list of most expensive states, with Hawaii grabbing the No. 1 spot. However, for New York City, the numbers go up, with residents having to make an hourly wage of at least $30 — across the five boroughs — in order to afford a two-bedroom home. Bronx, Kings and New York are three of the most expensive counties in the state, with residents having to make at least $30.21 to afford monthly housing costs of about $1,571 across each borough. They are only beat by Nassau and Suffolk counties, where residents must make $30.92 an hour. Queens and Staten Island also require $30.21 hourly to afford a two-bedroom apartment. For workers making the state minimum wage of $9 per hour, the report found that they must work 119 hours per week to be able to afford a two-bedroom home. Each household would
Raising wages Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a $15 minimum wage plan into law that phases in pay increases over several years. For workers in the city that are employed by large businesses — with at least 11 employees — the minimum wage would go up to $11 by the end of this year and then would rise another $2 each year after that. Workers in the rest of the state would see minimum wage go up to $9.70 by the end of the year and another 70 cents each year after until reaching $12.50 by 2020.
need to have individuals holding three full-time jobs at minimum wage to afford such a home. Even when it comes to a studio apartment across the five boroughs, individuals must make 24.87 per hour — compared to $20.91 statewide — to afford the home. Maria V. a Manhattan
McDonald’s employee, who asked that her last name not be used, said the findings of the report only prove the struggle minimum-wage workers face on a daily basis. She added that although she gets a little over the minimum, it still is not enough to support her family. “It’s just crazy. Imagine, there are weeks where I almost don’t see my children,” she said. “ I work so they can at least have a home, but $10 doesn’t work. Possibly for one person but not a family.” One Manhattan Wendy’s employee, who asked not to be named, said that he wasn’t surprised by the report’s findings as he fights to attend school and pay for rent — of a room. “I don’t think you need that [report] to know that living here is crazy,” he said. “ I make $10, go to school and have to pay rent for a room that I only fit in — $900 for a room. Can you believe that? But I guess that what it costs to say I live here. “

City opens support center for lawyers in immigrant cases Services provided at the Padilla Support Center include training and technical assistance, and a hotline connecting attorneys with immigration legal experts. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
New York City is taking steps to ensure that all residents are given a fair day in court, despite their immigration status. Mayor Bill de Blasio is set to announce on Friday the opening of the Padilla Support Center, which will provide services for criminal trial-level, appellate, and family court lawyers representing immigrant clients. Through the center — which is located at 40 West 39th Street — attorneys will receive expert advice on how to help defendants facing a criminal charge or who are hit with minor, nonviolent offenses. According to the city,
Defense attorneys sit for training conducted by Padilla Support Center. IMMIGRANT DEFENSE PROJECT
1.5M IMMIGRANTS WHO AREN’T CITIZENS
700K THOSE IN NYC ELIGIBLE TO BE CITIZENS
there are currently about 1.5 million immigrants across the five boroughs who are not American citizens. Out of this number, a total of 700,000 are eligible to apply for citizenship — however entering a guilty plea or being convicted of a crime can impact that process. “Equipping lawyers to provide immigrants with the best possible criminal defense is an important piece of ensuring
that our criminal justice system is fair and immigrants continue to feel welcome in New York City,” said de Blasio. Under the Supreme Court decision Padilla v. Kentucky, defense attorneys are required to inform their clients of the potential immigration consequences of a particular criminal case. Through partnering with the nonprofit Immigrant Defense Proj-
ect (IDP), the city will provide legal resources, training and technical assistance to help raise awareness of the consequences immigrants face when it comes to criminal and family court cases. “As the Supreme Court recognized in the Padilla decision, everyone has the right to an effective criminal defense regardless of immigration status,” said Alisa Wellek, IDP executive director. “For immi-
grants, that means having a lawyer who can advise them on the immigration consequences of a given plea, and help them avoid those consequences when possible.” The new center will also operate a hotline for criminal defense attorneys and offer a connection to immigration lawyers — funded by the city — who handle non-criminal legal needs such as residency applications or deportation proceedings. The Padilla Support Center is part of a network across the state of regional immigration assistance centers announced last year by the State Office of Indigent Legal Services to deliver effective representation that is in constitutional agreement. “Ensuring that immigrants have access to justice is a key priority for ensuring inclusion and equity for all,” said Kavita Pawria-Sanchez, assistant commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. “This initiative will directly contribute to the stability of immigrant families and communities.”
MTA to offer additional beach service using trains, buses starting Memorial Day weekend To better accommodate riders headed to area beaches on weekends this summer, the MTA will be offering additional service on several subway and bus lines as the city’s coastal recreation areas open for the season. Starting this Saturday, Bx12 bus service in the Bronx will be extended to Orchard Beach between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., with additional buses running on weekends during the summer, the MTA reported. From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day,
the city’s beaches will be open and have lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the NYC Parks and Recreation Department. Swimming will be prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty. To handle travelers heading to and from Rockaway Beach, the MTA has announced that service on the Rockaway Park S train will be extended from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends from Broad Channel to the Rockaway Boulevard A train station starting on Sunday, June 12. Starting on Sunday,
July 3, service will be increased on the Q35 bus route, which operates between Brooklyn College and Rockaway Park, with more than 35 additional trips on weekends. In 2015, New York City’s beaches were open on weekends in September after Labor Day, and this has been proposed for 2016 as well, the MTA stated. If that is the case at the end of the summer season this year, extended MTA service will also operate on those weekends. JASON NUCKOLLS

MTA opens passage connecting Fulton Center to WTC PATH station The new 350-footlong tunnel allows commuters to walk underneath Dey Street between Broadway and Church Street. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Just in time for Thursday’s rush hour commute, the MTA opened yet another portion of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub Oculus that will connect thousands of people to more options for getting around. At 5 p.m. Thursday, the transit agency announced that commuters will be able to connect from Fulton Center to the PATH World Trade Center station through a brand-new pedestrian tunnel. The passageway, called the Dey Street Concourse, is a 350-footlong, 27-foot-wide tunnel that will allow people to walk underneath Dey Street between Broadway and Church Street. According to the MTA, the tunnel — located at the bottom level of Fulton Center — will link an estimated 300,00 daily subway riders who

use the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, Z and R lines to the PATH rail system. The Dey Street Concourse will also feature multimedia displays on the walls displaying advertisements, while also offering travel information including weather and the time. The tunnel will also host rotating new media artwork commissioned by the MTA Arts & Design. By 2018, the passage will also connect to the Cortlandt Street station
following a reconstruction of the station. The passageway will also allow commuters to connect to Battery Park City and World Trade Center Towers 1 and 4 while keeping them away from heavily trafficked streets and any construction surrounding the World Trade Center. The Oculus opened its doors in March giving commuters access to the hub’s main section and connection to the PATH.

Rapper Troy Ave arrested in deadly T.I. concert shooting Brooklyn-based rapper Troy Ave was arrested in connection with the shootings that took place during an T.I. concert at Irving Plaza concert hall Wednesday night, Police Commissioner William Bratton told NY1. The department released a video capturing a few moments of the shooting, but told the station that the man seen firing the gun on video was the hip-hop artist. According to the New York Daily News, Ave will face charges of reckless endangerment and illegal weapons possession, and — pending the results of a ballistics test — might face a murder charge. Police said the shooting began when an argument broke out between rival groups associated with rappers Maino and Troy Ave.
Police released video of the shooting in the hopes of identifying any suspects, witnesses or additional victims. View it on Metro.us. PROVIDED
Maino and another rapper, Uncle Murda, were performing before an audience of about 1,000 when gunfire erupted at about 10:15 p.m.
Ave reportedly accidentally shot himself in the leg, while 33-year-old Ronald McPhatter was fatally wounded. Two other people were struck by bullets in the melee and were taken to Bellevue Hospital. T.I. posted a condolence message on his Twitter account Thursday night. The police are still asking anyone who can identify “any suspects, witnesses or additional victims depicted in the attached video in regards to this incident” to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders on Thursday explored staging an unconventional presidential debate in California that would sideline Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. The two men — a billionaire and a democratic socialist — expressed interest in a televised encounter between them even though Republican and Democratic presidential candidates traditionally do not debate each other until the parties have selected their nominees. “I’d love to debate Bernie," Trump told reporters in North Dakota, after he secured enough delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination. “I think it would get very high ratings. It would be in a big arena.” Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in an email that there were no formal plans yet for such an event. But Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver told CNN that there had been “a few discussions” between the campaigns about the details. “We hope that he will not chicken out,” Weaver said. “We hope Donald Trump has the courage to get on stage now that he said he would.” Sanders, a senator from Vermont, is running far behind Clinton in the race for the Democratic nomination for the Nov. 8 presidential election. But a nationally televised debate with the presumptive Republican nominee would be a big boost to his chances in the California primary
on June 7, when Clinton is likely to win the nomination. Trump said a debate with Sanders could raise up to $15 million for charity. “I’d love to debate Bernie, but they’ll have to pay a lot of money for it,” he said.
Late-night TV The idea was hatched during an appearance by Trump on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” late on Wednesday. Kimmel said he asked Trump about the debate at the suggestion of Sanders, who is scheduled to appear on the show Thursday night. “Game on,” Sanders tweeted. “I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7 primary.” The Clinton campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a possible Trump-Sanders debate. “Smart and bold move by Sanders,” Democratic strategist Brad Bannon said. “Sanders will also have a chance mano a mano with Trump to prove that he would be a better candidate against Trump in November. The Clinton people are furious but Bernie wins points for being so aggressive.” Sanders has said he will do everything he can to ensure that Trump does not win the White House. Clinton has tried to woo Sanders supporters as she turns her attention to the November election. But some worry that Sanders’ supporters — who are largely young, workingclass and disillusioned with the Democratic Party establishment — will turn instead to political neophyte Trump, who has championed a populist agenda. G7 decides to send strong message on S. China Sea China says don’t “hype.” Group of Seven (G7) leaders agreed Thursday on the need to send a strong message on maritime claims in the western Pacific, where an increasingly assertive China is locked in territorial disputes with Japan and several Southeast Asian nations. The agreement prompted a sharp rejoinder from China, which is not in the G7 but whose rise as a power has put it at the heart of some discussions at the advanced nations’ summit in IseShima, central Japan. “Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe led discussion on the current situation in the South China Sea and East China Sea. Other G7 leaders said it is necessary for G7 to issue a clear signal,” Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshige Seko told reporters after a session on foreign-policy affairs. At a news conference late Wednesday, Abe said Japan welcomed China’s peaceful rise, while repeating Tokyo’s opposition to acts that try to change the status quo by force. He also urged respect for the rule of law. Both principles are expected to be mentioned in a statement after the summit. The United States is also increasingly concerned about China’s action in the region. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying retorted in Beijing that the South China Sea issue had “nothing to do” with the G7 or any of its members. “China is resolutely opposed to individual countries hyping up the South China Sea for personal gain,” she said. U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday called for China to resolve maritime disputes peacefully, and he
reiterated that the United States was simply concerned about freedom of navigation and overflight in the region. Obama on Thursday pointed to the risks from North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, saying the isolated state was “hellbent” on getting atomic weapons. But he said there had been improved responses from countries in the region like China that could reduce the risk of North Korea selling weapons or nuclear material. Seko, speaking the first of two days of the summit in central Japan, said Abe told G7 counterparts that Pyongyang’s development of nuclear technology and ballistic missiles poses a threat to international peace, including in Europe. “It is necessary to make North Korea realize that it would not be able have a bright future unless such issues as abduction, nuclear and missile development are resolved,” Abe told the group, according to Seko. The G7 groups Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
Global health check The global economy topped the agenda earlier in the day, when G7 leaders voiced concern about emerging economies and Abe made a pointed comparison to the 2008 global financial crisis. Not all his G7 partners appeared to agree. The G7 leaders did agree on the need for flexible spending to spur world growth but the timing and amount depended on each country, Seko told reporters, adding that some countries saw no need for such spending. Britain and Germany have been resisting calls for fiscal stimulus. REUTERS

BRIEFS Tiany’s “old-world luxuryâ€? fails to charm millennials For Alan Feid, a 28-year-old looking to buy an engagement ring for his ďŹ ancĂŠe, the rings he found in the diamond district in Manhattan were just as good as the ones he saw at Tiany & Co.’s agship store on Fifth Avenue. And they were less than half the price. “At the end of the day, I don’t think there’s much of a dierence when it comes to the style or the

Tiany’s jewelry, long considered a status symbol, has been patronized by Hollywood A-listers and the political elite, and coveted by well-to-do baby boomers who made the brand synonymous with weddings and anniversaries. People wait in security lines in the United terminal at JFK Airport.
For an agency largely in charge of the safety of the flying public, the Transportation Security Administration looks like a train wreck these days. Investigations have revealed TSA officers at airports aren’t particularly good at detecting threats, and their bosses have been accused of punishing whistleblowers who point out such problems. We’ve seen seemingly endless lines at checkpoints, hundreds of travelers missing their planes and huge piles of delayed baggage. So with summer travel looming, the head of Homeland Security and his TSA leader stood shoulder to shoulder to unveil a fancy 10-point plan to improve things. It includes, by the way, more restrictions on the size and number of carryons. Yeah, that’ll make it better. But asked if travelers would still see three-hour
lines, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson could muster only a tepid “Well, I’m hoping they don’t have to. Then on NPR he said, “We’re advising the public to get to the airport with plenty of time. Hmm. What’s plenty? Two hours? Five? Should I go now for a flight in June? True, the TSA’s head of security was pushed aside this week in what was euphemistically called a “management change, but only after reports that the guy had pocketed some $90,000 in bonuses. In other words, he was doing such a bang-up job they had to reward him before they dumped him. Johnson points to funding shortfalls and unexpected travel trends to argue TSA needs more staff. But in the same breath he defends TSA officers, folks who could be helping you get safely to your plane on time, instead working security details at presidential campaign events. No kidding. Then, in a masterpiece of hollow empathy, he says, “I can understand passenger frustration. My encounters with TSA officers are usually OK. But the chaos of plastic bins, folding tables, shoeless passengers and Disney-like lines has always looked like an accident waiting to happen. The TSA insists it won’t compromise safety. But here’s something to consider when you’re sweating out the clock in a security line: Incompetence has an odd way of thwarting even the best intentions.

There’s an impossible buzz around Courtney Barnett. First things first: She doesn’t sound like anyone else in mainstream music right now. The Melbourne, Australia, native makes addictively boisterous, rambling rock with storytelling skills that teeter on the nonsensical and the way-too-real. Secondly, the accolades aren’t bad: Barnett’s 2015 debut studio album, “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit,” earned her a Best New Artist nomination at this year’s Grammy Awards, as well as eight nominations including Album of the Year from her native Australia’s
ARIA Music Awards. Barnett was invited to “Saturday Night Live” last weekend to perform for the Season 41 finale hosted by fellow rocker Fred Armisen just before a gig at Alabama’s increasingly popular, beachfront Hangout Music Festival. Fresh off Coachella, she calls during a rare moment of downtime between a gig in Philly, a Saturday spot at Boston Calling and June’s Governors Ball. 18 WKND ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ Director: James Bobin Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp Rating: PG
“Alice Through the Looking Glassâ€? has a tragic conceptual aw, on top of being a sequel to one of the worst movies ever made: It asks you to care if our hero (Mia Wasikowska) can save a character who’s profoundly, spirit-crushingly, hands-stabbingly annoying. The story ďŹ nds that Johnny Depp’s hepped-up nuisance of a Mad Hatter has become sad. That’s the plot. He’s so sad, his makeup, which looks like a rainbow farted on his head, has turned ashen, as though his body was a mood ring. He might be dying, but is death such a bad thing? For us it would mean less of Depp gesticulating and mugging and scraping the bottom of his weirdness

barrel. For Depp it would mean not having to return to one of the ugliest realms ever committed to screen. Tim Burton’s Disney-driven abomination from 2010 offered a dim and dank hellscape of hideously malformed creatures, where charm and whimsy and even Carroll’s peerless wordplay go to die. The company has been doing ďŹ ne work with recent remakes of their animated back catalog (“Cinderella,â€? “The Jungle

Bookâ€?). But with “Alice,â€? they’re stuck with a miserable eyesore that desecrates great lit —and great lit you’d ordinarily only screw up because you meant to. Burton skipped this round, handing the reins to James Bobin, who made the two sprightly new Muppets movies. He’s a mere bumbling traďŹƒc cop here, ďŹ ring o a clatter of should-be miracles: a time ocean, a moving chess set, a pack of minion-y droids that can Voltron into a bigger robot. It’s a riot of corporate-approved movie magic, though it seems no single conjurer is at the wheels. Late in, Alice and Sacha Baron Cohen’s lordly Time — who sounds like Werner Herzog and is dressed like a Eurovision contestant — have a heady discussion about whether time is a thief or if we should be grateful of our brief existence and cherish it while we’re here. The only sane response to this query is to anguish that you’re spending some of your allotted existence watching “Alice Through the Looking Glass.â€? MATT PRIGGE
Michael Fassbender’s Magneto is still peeved in “X-Men: Apocalypse. ALAN MARKFIELD
‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Director: Bryan Singer Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender Rating: PG-13
The “X-Menâ€? movies are old-school. That’s not just because the franchise is 16 years old. It’s because despite the time-hopping and constant recasting it still plays the same as it ever did: breezy, fun, competent. “Competentâ€? may not set the heart autter, but them’s the breaks. The current superhero movie trend, upheld by Marvel and DC, is to crank up the ambition — Social importance! Deep philosophy! The most comic book gods crammed into a single blockbuster ever! — and just about
tumble o the screen from all the weight. Whatever. The “X-Menâ€? ďŹ lms were jamming too many superheroes into superhero movies three whole Spider-Men ago. They know how it’s done. “Apocalypse,â€? their sixth group outing (not counting the two “Wolverineâ€? spinos), tells a story so basic it almost feels revolutionary. There’s a bad guy — the eponymous blue meanie, played by the usually charismatic Oscar Isaac, trapped in makeup and a suit that make him look and act like a block of painted granite — and everyone must team up to stop him. Apocalypse has some minions, including Michael Fassbender’s still fuming Magneto, who tried to lay low and start a family, only for that to come to a tragic end. The scene where Magneto loses everything is gutting,
and it gives Fassbender to once again treat these frivolous blockbusters like serious dramas. Returning series director Bryan Singer is an old pro at ďŹ nding a consistent tone that can turn grave, or even silly. Evan Peters’ speed freak Quicksilver basically gets a repeat of his insta-classic “Time in a Bottleâ€? bit from “Days of Future Past.â€? The simple “Apocalypseâ€? is a bit of a letdown after its nutty, time-hopping predecessor. But it’s fun to see a comic book movie that’s fun — that knows how to be serious without getting burdened by pretention, like “Batman v. Superman,â€? or that doesn’t feel like 10 movies smashed into one, like “Civil War.â€? It won’t change the world or even the game. It’s solid and forgettable. And right now, that seems like a compliment. MP

“Chevalier” Director: Athina Rachel Tsangari Stars: Vangelis Mourikis, Nikos Orphanos Rating: NR
The Greek New Wave is really just a handful of people, each making the same kind of movie. Their brand is absurdist allegories. In these darkly humorous whatzits — like “Dogtooth,” “The Lobster” and the new “Chevalier” — characters are mere pawns, deadpan machines stripped of their humanity by draconian systems and social norms. In the latter, director Athina Rachel Tsangari (“Attenberg”) enters the world of men, discovering they can be pretty stupid, especially when there aren’t any women around. The setting is a yacht full of dudes, who are on the tail end of some vague fishing trip in the Aegean Sea that looks like it’s neither for business nor pleasure. In fact everyone’s so bored with each other’s company they decide to pass the time with a series of games. These range from the silly to the amusingly mundane, and when completed they will deem which
Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Chevalier” finds men on a fishing trip competing with each other to pass the time. STRAND RELEASING of them is “The Best in General.” And so everyone starts judging postures, ringtones, calls home to the wife, even thighs. At one point they each race to see who can erect an Ikea bookshelf first. They’re all variations on the old ween-measuring contest, which at one point does become literal. Most of these new films from Greece tend to appear more simple than they are, though “Chevalier” is the most easily deciphered. It’s still complex. Tsangari is both amused by and mildly empathetic to her characters, who are aggressive and competitive and macho, but also weak
and scared and easily peerpressured. The need to win is deeply ingrained in them by biology and a crumbling society, and it’s only in little moments in between rounds that they pair off and blurt out secret confessions and neuroses. In one sense, these films are all essentially comedies that take easily exploitable premises and wring them dry through endless, creative variations. But in each case it’s the sadness and the deep perception of how individuals get subsumed into groups that make them more than a series of good, very, very funny jokes. MATT PRIGGE

FANTASY BASEBALL: THE SCIENCE OF ADD/DROP OPINION
KYLE BISHOP
One of the more interesting tools featured on all of the major fantasy platforms allows you to see which players are being added or dropped most frequently each day or week. Today, we’ll look at a few of these players and determine whether or not you should follow the wisdom of the crowds. MOST ADDED
Cameron Maybin A former first round pick and the headliner of the trade that brought Miguel Cabrera to Detroit, Maybin has bounced around the league and ended up back in the Motor City. He missed
the first five weeks of the season with a wrist fracture after being hit by a pitch in spring training. Since returning from the disabled list, however, he’s been a force. In only seven games, Maybin has collected 14 hits, including a homer, and has stolen four bases in five attempts. He’s not going to keep up this torrid pace, but after a useful season with the Braves in 2015 (10 homers, 23 steals), he may finally be tapping into his upside at age 29. Verdict: Add
he did in 2015, and is actually allowing even more home runs. His success is built upon a pair of unsustainable figures: a .261 batting average on balls in play (Lewis’ career mark checks in at .298) and a whopping 92.3 percent strand rate. To put that latter number in context: League average is about 70 percent, and only eight qualified pitchers have even managed an 85 percent mark in the last 50 years. Verdict: Avoid MOST DROPPED
Colby Lewis Lewis won 17 games for the Rangers a year ago despite a lousy 4.66 ERA. After firing seven shutout innings against the Astros on Friday, he’s 3-0 with a 2.75 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through nine starts. Those numbers will play in any format, but will they last? Almost certainly not. Lewis is posting virtually identical strikeout and walk rates as
Ketel Marte Marte is only appearing on this list as a result of a thumb injury suffered this past weekend. It’s a shame, too, as he was really starting to hit his stride after a slow start. Over the past month, Marte had hit .310/.333/.460 with 29 runs and RBI and three steals — fine production from a shortstop. Reports indicate that
the injury isn’t serious and that Marte will return immediately once eligible. DL slots are precious commodities as the season wears on and injuries pile up, but Marte has probably earned the use of one with his recent play. Verdict: Hold/Stash
J.A. Happ Fun fact: Happ is one of the aforementioned eight pitchers who have managed an 85 percent strand rate over a full season; he did so in his rookie season. Other than that year and his stretch run with the Pirates last season, he’s never been anything but a middling back-end starter. He has solid ratios so far (3.43 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) but is running a career worst strikeout rate of 5.77 per nine innings. He’s also got a rough month ahead of him, with a pair of starts against both the Red Sox and Orioles. Verdict: Drop
This weekend the Mets host the Dodgers in a primetime series, while the Yankees look to continue their winning ways in a three-game set with the Rays. The Mets send Jacob deGrom (3-1, 3.07 ERA) to the hill for Friday’s series opener. DeGrom pitched one of his better games of the year when he faced the Dodgers in L.A. on May 10, allowing eight hits but only two runs in seven innings. Noah Syndergaard (5-2, 1.94 ERA) seeks his fourth straight win on the mound on Saturday, and he started his winning streak against the Dodgers on May 11 by allowing just two runs on six hits in eight innings. “Thor” has an impressive 26 strikeouts over his last three starts. The series finale is on ESPN on Sunday night, and it’ll feature Clayton Kershaw (7-1, 1.48 ERA) and Bartolo Colon (4-3, 3.44 ERA). The Mets will need to pick up on their microscopic .130 average as a team against Kershaw to have a shot at winning this one.
Yankees Masahiro Tanaka (2-0, 3.24 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Yankees in their series opener with Tampa on Friday night, and the Rays’ hitters have had no answers for Tanaka previously; Evan Longoria, Brad Miller and Logan Morrison are a combined 5-for-35 with 10 K’s against him. Chris Archer responds for the Rays, and the season has certainly not been kind to him (3-5, 5.61 ERA). Jacoby Ellsbury will try to continue his incredible success against Archer (16-for-24, 4 BB). Michael Pineda (2-5, 6.34 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday afternoon, and he’ll be looking to put his dreadful start against the Rays on April 24 behind him (seven runs on 10 hits in five innings). The series closes on Sunday with Nathan Eovaldi (5-2, 3.95 ERA) on the mound for the Bombers. Eovaldi seeks his fifth straight win, and has given up just one run on three hits in his last two starts (12 IP). ROBERT CRISCOLA
Noah Syndergaard will get the ball on Saturday. GETTY IMAGES
