GENERAL MILLS RECALLS FLOUR OVER POSSIBLE LINK TO E. COLI
1
General Mills on Tuesday issued a voluntary recall of about 10 million pounds of flour, saying it was working with health officials to investigate an outbreak of E. coli that had sickened 38 people in 20 states. The bacteria strain behind the outbreak has not been found in any of General Mills’ Gold Medal, Wondra and Signature Kitchens flour or their manufacturing plant, the company said in a statement. Consumers have not contacted it directly to report any illnesses, Minneapolis-based company added. “Out of an abundance of caution, a voluntary recall is being made,” General Mills said in a statement. US WARNS CITIZENS OF POSSIBLE TERRORIST ATTACKS IN EUROPE

The U.S. State Department warned Americans of the possible threat of terrorist attacks in Europe this summer, saying targets could include tourist sites, restaurants and large events such as the European Soccer Championship in France. “We are alerting U.S. citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation,” it said in a travel alert expiring Aug. 31. “The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events.” The travel alert noted that France will host the UEFA Euro 2106 soccer championship from June 10 to July 10. PENTAGON: TWO US SERVICE MEMBERS INJURED IN IRAQ, SYRIA

Two U.S. service members were injured over the weekend, one each in Iraq and Syria, a Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday. “They were not on the front lines, they were not engaged in active combat, but they were hit in both cases by indirect fire and suffered injuries,” Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said. The United States has authorized 4,087 troops in Iraq and 300 in Syria. Since December, Iraqi forces trained by the U.S. military and backed by coalition air strikes have taken back territory from Islamic State, which seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in 2014. Davis did not say to which branch of the military the injured belonged, but added that they were carrying out advise and assist duties. REUTERS
Animal rights activists ask: Who’s responsible for Harambe’s death? Safety and the treatment of animals are in the spotlight after shooting of great ape. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
As outrage built since last weekend’s killing of an endangered gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child breached the animal’s enclosure, talk among animal rights activists turned to who bore responsibility and how to prevent a similar tragedy. Zookeepers shot the ape, a 450-pound, 17-yearold lowland silverback gorilla named Harambe, after a 3-year-old boy slipped away from his mother and into the exhibit. Officials have said they made the decision because the child’s life was in danger. The boy was not injured. Around the world, a debate has sprung up about who was to blame for the tragedy: the zoo, or the boy’s mom. Some have called for legislation, dubbed “Harambe’s Law,” that would hold zoogoers responsible when animals are harmed due to their negligence. Police in Cincinnati are now investigating the incident. Gorillas are also kept in captivity at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo, but the exhibit is significantly different in Boston from the open-air enclosure in Cincinnati. Gorillas at Franklin Park are separated from viewers by walls of thick glass, and a roof topped with steel mesh, which has been there since a renovation nearly a decade ago. The $2.3 million update came after a 300-pound gorilla named Little Joe escaped the zoo in 2003, injuring a zookeeper and a 2-yearold girl. The ape roamed the neighborhood for two hours before being recaptured.
Franklin Zoo’s Mama Kiki, a gorilla, rests with her baby. DONALD ROCKHEAD
The Franklin Park Zoo did not respond Tuesday to requests for comment. Among those weighing in on the incident this week was Jeff Corwin, a Massachusetts native and cable television channel Animal Planet star, who said he wanted to send a message to parents taking children to the zoo. “When you’re there with your family, you have a responsibility for your children,” the zoo advocate said in an interview with CBS. “The zoo is not your babysitter. Take a break from the selfie and the texting. They’re wild animals.” Corwin also called the decision to kill the ape in Cincinnati a tragic, but necessary choice. Theodora Capaldo, president and CEO of the New England AntiVivisection Society, said when it comes to Harambe’s death, she blames everyone involved. “When animals are held in captivity they are our victims,” Capaldo said. “[Harambe] was doing nothing wrong. His only sin or crime against humanity happens to be that he’s a different species.” Capaldo and her organization argue against the
use of animals in scientific research and against using animals for humans’ gains. In Boston, Capaldo said she knows many zookeepers at the Franklin Park Zoo personally and said they are “amazing people” who love the animals in their care. “That still means the institution itself can be challenged, even if there are sincere, goodhearted people working there,” she said. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, through a spokesman, declined to comment on the Cincinnati incident, but directed Metro to its written statements on animals in captivity. According to those statements, the MSPCA believes “wild animals should be permitted to exist undisturbed in their native environments,” but sets guidelines for zoos. Among them are that animals not be removed just to be featured as entertainment, that the exhibits educate the public thoroughly about wildlife and that the animals’ care and safety is paramount. Elsewhere, the incident has brought renewed
attention to zoos around the world. Although cases like the one in Cincinnati are extremely rare, the breach of the gorilla pen’s barriers was bound to happen, said Julia Gallucci, a primatologist with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), because zoos around the world haven’t done enough to keep people and dangerous animals apart. “We need to look at it from a broader view: How could this have been prevented?” Gallucci said. “The zoo has a responsibility to protect the animals and the humans and they shouldn’t leave that to chance. They should not assume the parents are going to watch their kids.” PETA, she said, has argued that gorillas in captivity should instead be kept in sanctuaries, at a distance from humans. “Captive gorillas and other great apes, once they’re in captivity, they have to stay captive,” Gallucci said. “But they should be in accredited sanctuaries where their needs come first, where they are not put on display and are certainly better protected.”

Baker would sign House version of transgender bill The governor said the bill is aimed at preventing discrimination based on gender identity. On the eve of House debate on the issue, Gov. Charlie Baker said Tuesday he would sign transgender anti-discrimination legislation crafted by House leaders. “No one should be discriminated against in Massachusetts because of their gender identity,” the governor said in a statement. “After hearing from all sides and carefully reviewing the two separate proposals that have been working their way through the legislature, I believe the House version addresses the concerns that some have with the bill by requiring the Attorney General to issue regulations to protect against people abusing the law. I would sign the House version in its current form should it reach my desk.” The House version of the bill “supplies the right amount of clarity with respect to the public safety questions that other people have raised,” Baker told The Boston Globe, which first reported on the governor’s vow to sign the House bill. The House bill, as first reported by the News Service in April, would require Attorney General Maura Healey’s office to “issue guidance or regulations for referring to the appropriate law enforcement agency or other authority for legal action any person who asserts gender identity for an improper purpose … ” That language was not included in a bill that cleared the Senate

While the Senate bill would take effect upon its final passage, the House bill would take effect Jan. 1, 2017, and states “any public accommodation including without limitation any entity that offers the provision of goods, services, or access to the public that lawfully segregates or separates access to such public accommodation or other entity based on a person’s sex shall grant all persons admission to and the full enjoyment of such public accommodation or other entity consistent with the person’s gender identity.”

BRIEF California governor endorses Clinton, calls Trump dangerous California Gov. Jerry Brown endorsed Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, saying it was the only way to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. “I have decided to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton because I believe this is the only path forward to win the presidency and stop the dangerous candidacy of Donald Trump, Brown said in a
letter to California Democrats and independents posted online. Brown, a popular Democrat who has steered the nation’s most populous state on a centrist path, praised Clinton’s rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, but noted that she had won about 3 million more votes and hundreds more delegates. “In other words, Clinton’s lead is insurmountable and Democrats have shown — by millions of votes — that they want her as
their nominee. California is the biggest prize of the six states that hold presidential nominating contests on June 7, with 475 delegates. Clinton has secured 2,310 delegates, 73 short of the number needed to clinch her party’s nomination for the Nov. 8 election. As he noted in his letter, Brown himself waged a populist presidential campaign in 1992, losing to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, with themes similar to
many espoused by Sanders, a selfdescribed democratic socialist. Running on the slogan “We the People,â€? Brown railed against the inuence of money in Washington and said politicians were “bought and paid for.â€? But Brown said Democrats need to stop ďŹ ghting each other so they can focus on beating Trump, who he said presents a danger to immigrants, the environment and world peace. REUTERS

Trump details millions in aid for veterans, attacks media Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday detailed $5.6 million in contributions he raised for military veterans, and sharply criticized the news media for questioning him for months about what happened to the money. At a combative news conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the billionaire accused the media of failing to give him credit for raising the funds at an event in January in Iowa. Trump said the money was benefiting 41 groups. He was withering in his criticism. He called an ABC News reporter at the event, Tom Llamas, “sleazy and said Jim Acosta of CNN was “a real beauty. Trump’s criticism flew in the face of the hopes of some Republican leaders who want Trump to tone down his rhetoric and become more magnanimous now that he has sealed the Republican presidential
nomination for the Nov. 8 election. Trump, whose bellicose rhetoric has been a trademark of an insurgent candidacy that has upended the Republican Party, has shown no signs of doing so. Last week, he attacked some of his former rivals for the Republican presidential nomination and a popular Latina Republican governor, Susana Martinez of New Mexico. Trump said the coverage of his veterans group donations had been close to libelous. Asked whether he would keep his adversarial stance with reporters if elected president, Trump said: “Yeah, it’s going to be like this. The New York real estate mogul also bristled at the possibility that Republicans opposed to him might run a thirdparty candidate as an alternative to Trump or the expected Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. Depp-Heard divorce drama heats up The drama of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s divorce continues to escalate as her claims that the actor repeatedly physically and verbally abused her multiple times during their 15-month marriage come to light. Meanwhile, Depp’s family and friends have come forward to defend the “Through the Looking Glass star over the weekend. Daughter Lily Rose Depp spoke out on Instagram, writing: “My dad is the sweetest, most loving person I know, he’s been nothing but a wonderful father to my little brother and I, and everyone who knows him would say the same, alongside a childhood photo. While ex-long-term partner Vanessa Paradis called Heard’s accusations “outrageous in a handwritten letter to TMZ, adding that he never physically abused her in the duration of their 14-

Ethan Hawke wants more women filmmakers The actor talks Rebecca Miller’s comedy “Maggie’s Plan” and expanding his horizons. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Ethan Hawke has been acting for over three decades, but “Maggie’s Plan” was his first time being directed by a woman. Even he’s amazed by that. In the comedy, by Rebecca Miller (“Personal Velocity”), the actor plays an academic who leaves his wife/colleague, Georgette (Julianne Moore), for Greta Gerwig’s Maggie, a younger woman who eventually realizes she might have made a mistake. It gave him the chance to both explore things he knew well — being a dad who lives in New York City — and see new sides of himself. This is a comedy that’s
very casual about presenting how today is lived: how we can fall in and out of love, how couples can split and still keep in contact, how their kids won’t be destroyed by divorce. Yet it’s still a comedy. A lot of the comedies I grew up loving are comedies with great performances that are rooted in recognizable human behavior. One of the things that’s happened is comedy has largely been reoriented towards a 14-year-old male psyche. I laugh at them, too. But if you look at these great Katharine Hepburn or Preston Sturges comedies, they’re really smart. To read a scene where a New Yorker is driving with their stepkids and is worried about where they’re going to park — that’s a movie I want to see. The people in this movie are all likeable and screwed-up, like everyone I know. We’re all
trying to get through life. And it’s hard because you screw up all the time, and you screw up with good intentions. You also don’t see many movies about colleagues in a very specific profession — here a particular wing of academia — in relationships. It’s surprising how rarely we see that in movies. So many of us are colleagues with the people we partner with, in some way, shape or form. This is one of the most surprising things to me about being an adult: I didn’t know that school was the only time I was going to spend really engaged with people who are interested in different things than me. My whole adult life I’ve spent with people who are interested in the arts. I see it with my kids in school. I really want them to enjoy these friendships, because you’ll never be friends with people

like that for the rest of your life. Not to say you shouldn’t be, but we all break off into camps. What’s great about John and Georgette’s relationship is that’s how people partner off all the time. It’s refreshing that in the last year there’s been a concerted effort to get more women directing films, to have more chances to get different viewpoints into the market place. I think about it completely from a selfish point of view: that it’s in my best interest [to be directed by women]. I’ve been act-
ing for a long time, and acting for Rebecca was different than acting for a man my age. I need to put myself in a position to be viewed differently. Then, by accident, things start to change. My world is opening up and I’m allowed to be different, to show different sides of me. We collaborate with people who are different from us. It’s in our best interest. It gets you out of your habitual behavior that you didn’t even know you had.

Landlord horror stories and how to avoid them We chat with the CEO of Whose Your Landlord, Ofo Ezeugwu. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

Finding a new apartment is stressful enough, but don’t think your worries end once you’ve locked in roommates and sweet digs. How well do you know your landlord? As renters, we jump through hoops to secure our living space, but all the due diligence is usually one-sided. But startup Whose Your Landlord is looking to change all that. We chat with CEO and co-founder Ofo Ezeugwu about the website’s beginnings at Temple University, landlord horror stories and why it’s important for renters to do their research. What inspired you to start Whose Your Landlord? The idea was first hatched during my junior year at Temple University. I was running for the [student government] VP position at the time and constantly hearing issues from stu-
dents on campus dealing with their landlords and property managers.
Why should we care about who our landlord is? Peace of mind matters. While one side is collecting a check, the other side is sharing their laughter, their saddest moments — having very personal moments in the space. Real estate is not a purely transactional industry. One side is very emotionally invested. When you come home from work, you want a calm place to rest your head. God forbid you forget your key, something happens that needs to be fixed — you want to know your landlord has your back. Since starting the site, what are some crazy landlord stories you’ve heard? (Laughs) I have stories for days, some insane things. One young lady in Philly kept reaching out to her landlord about plumbing issues but was being ignored. Her apartment was on the basement level and one night, she comes home from work to find everything submerged in sewage. She calls her landlord,

texts him and gets no response. The next day he texts her, “Just have my rent by the first.” You can’t make this stuff up. What actions can a renter take if her landlord is a nightmare? First off, they need to understand it’s not a one-way relationship. Everyone has the right to be treated fairly and get quality service. In terms of action, they can reach out to their local councilman or councilwoman. Renters can also get an abatement, which is withholding rent until a problem is solved.

Go ahead and call this Red Sox season improbable, but it was more probable than the Red Sox winning it all in 2013. The Red Sox’ last World Series title came off the heels of arguably the two most embarrassing seasons in franchise history as the “chicken and beer” boys of 2011 got Terry Francona fired and the one-year Bobby Valentine era of 2012 was a joke from April through the end of September. A common phrase used by fans in 2013 was “can they keep it up?” That team improbably (there’s that word again) did keep it up as nearly every player in their batting order had an above average year. Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Stephen Drew and Will Middlebrooks all exceeded expectations that year. Almost all of the players in this year’s lineup are performing above expectations but the dif-
ference here is that the Sox now have players who are just coming into their own. Mookie Betts (nine home runs, 35 RBI) is still just 23-years-old. Xander Bogaerts (.345 batting average, 30 RBI) is just 23-years-old. Jackie Bradley Jr. (.331 batting average, 37 RBI) is just 26. Travis Shaw (.293 batting average, 35 RBI) is just 26. Sure, one or two of them could fizzle out like Middlebrooks, but it’s obviously better to bloom early than late in baseball. Unlike in 2013, the Red Sox have a strong base of youth in their order and they have hardhitting veteran players like David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez is an interesting case in that it’s difficult to say whether or not he’s overachieving this year or just severely underachieved last year. The knock has been his lack of power, but he’s only hit 20 or more homers in a season six times in his 12 year career. Last year he hit 19, in 2014 he hit just 13 and in 2012 he hit just 10. Ramirez battled injuries along the way but the fact of the matter is he has been trending toward becoming a spray hitter over a
power hitter for a while now. “He’s been pretty hot all year, I would say,” Shaw said of Ramirez to NESN. “He’s hitting [around] .300. He’s another bat in the middle of the order, another guy who take you out of the ballpark at any single time, any single pitch. When the middle-of-theorder guys are clicking, and the bottom of the order can get on, and the top of the order can get on, this could be a dangerous lineup.”
The road ahead Joe Kelly (2-0, 6.30 ERA) gets the ball for the Red Sox Wednesday night in Baltimore. Kelly was roughed up in his last outing as he allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks in just 4.2 innings. Mike Wright (2-3, 5.05 ERA) is slated to start for the Orioles. Rick Porcello (7-2, 3.68 ERA) and Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6, 6.36 ERA) are scheduled to face off in the series finale Thursday. The Blue Jays (27-26), who took two of three from the Sox in Toronto this past weekend, will pay Fenway a visit this coming weekend for a three-game set.
