GENERAL MILLS RECALLS FLOUR OVER POSSIBLE LINK TO E. COLI
1
General Mills on Tuesday issued a voluntary recall of about 10 million pounds of flour, saying it was working with health officials to investigate an outbreak of E. coli that had sickened 38 people in 20 states. The bacteria strain behind the outbreak has not been found in any of General Mills’ Gold Medal, Wondra and Signature Kitchens flour or their manufacturing plant, the company said in a statement. Consumers have not contacted it directly to report any illnesses, Minneapolis-based company added. “Out of an abundance of caution, a voluntary recall is being made,” General Mills said in a statement. The U.S. State Department warned Americans of the possible threat of terrorist attacks in Europe this summer, saying targets could include tourist sites, restaurants and large events such as the European Soccer Championship in France. “We are alerting U.S. citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation,” it said in a travel alert expiring Aug. 31. “The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events.” The travel alert noted that France will host the UEFA Euro 2106 soccer championship from June 10 to July 10. Two U.S. service members were injured over the weekend, one each in Iraq and Syria, a Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday. “They were not on the front lines, they were not engaged in active combat, but they were hit in both cases by indirect fire and suffered injuries,” Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said. The United States has authorized 4,087 troops in Iraq and 300 in Syria. Since December, Iraqi forces trained by the U.S. military and backed by coalition air strikes have taken back territory from Islamic State, which seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in 2014. Davis did not say to which branch of the military the injured belonged, but added that they were carrying out advise and assist duties. REUTERS
NY group condemns zoos as anger builds over gorilla’s death The Bronx Zoo has a male silverback as part of its Congo Gorilla Forest exhibit, but requires minors be supervised. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
The killing of an endangered gorilla after a toddler entered its closure at the Cincinnati Zoo this past weekend has prompted outrage among animal rights activists, with one New York group calling for the closure of all zoos. Kate Riviello, president of the animal advocacy group No Kill New York Inc., started a petition after the 17-yearold silverback gorilla named Harambe was fatally shot on Saturday by zoo officials to save the child. The endangered animal was killed after a 3-year-old child slipped into its enclosure at the zoo. On cellphone video, it appeared Harambe was initially gentle with the child but began dragging him out of the moat when the crowd’s screams seemed to get the gorilla agitated. At that point, zoo officials made the decision to shoot Harambe. The boy was then rescued, unhurt. In New York City, the Bronx Zoo is the only zoo that is home to gorillas — in its Congo Gorilla Forest exhibit — including a male silverback named Ernie. Visitors can watch these animals behind a glass. According to the zoo’s website, any visitors under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a chaperone and visitors are asked to stay on public paths at all times. The Bronx Zoo did not respond to multiple requests for comments as of press time. According to the petition — which has garnered over 4,500 signatures — supporters call for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to

animal was raised at a zoo, it was hard to predict how the gorilla — who weighed more than 400 pounds — might have acted or what it could have done to the boy if it was hit with a tranqualizer dart to knock it out. Romero, a father of two, said that one of the big issues in this case is the parent or guardian’s responsibility. The mother, he said, needed to be more attentive because young children tend to think of wild animals as being like people because of what they see in cartoons or movies. “[Parents] need to be more responsible,” he said. “ You wonder why she didn’t keep a good eye on her child. Even if you walk on the street, you have to keep an eye on the children.” When asked about the petition calling for the closing of all zoos, Romero said that this has been an issue going on for decades, and that zoos have become more active in education and preserving endangered species. “I am not the type of person that is 100 percent against zoos, but I feel sad for the animals,” Romero said. “It is sad to see them living in those conditions.”

Will NYC’s Stonewall Inn become first LGBT national monument? For Obama, the monument designation in his last year in office could solidify his legacy as a defender of LGBT rights. The New York bar known as the birthplace of the gay pride movement could become the country’s first national monument honoring LGBT rights under a plan to be considered by President Barack Obama. The Stonewall Inn in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village was the site of a 1969 police raid that touched off riots and ignited a long struggle to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into the mainstream and guarantee their rights. A year after the Stonewall riots, activists staged the country’s first gay rights parade. The event has evolved into LGBT Pride Month, which begins Wednesday, with parades and street parties around the world that draw millions of people of every sexual orientation. To honor that legacy, Obama is being asked to designate the tavern and adjoining Christopher Park as a national monument, the second highest recognition in the U.S. National Park Service. U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, several members of Congress, and local and state officials have strongly endorsed the effort. Stonewall is already a National Historic Landmark and both inn and park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Obama’s legacy For Obama, the monument designation in his last year in office could solidify his legacy as a defender of LGBT rights. While he started his first term opposed to gay marriage, he came out in favor of it before his re-election in 2012. In the battle over transgender rights, he asked all U.S. public schools last

Melissa Sklarz, a transgender rights activist, was among those attending hearings in Manhattan this month to push for the national monument status. “It was great for me to be able to stand up for my part of the community, that LGBT includes trans women and it’s important that that voice be heard,” she said. The proposal has its critics. Some of them say national monuments should honor war heroes or the Founding Fathers, not a symbol of gay rights. “A monument to sin?” said Franklin Graham, the Christian evangelist continuing the work of his famous father Billy Graham. “That’s unbelievable,” he added in a Facebook post this month. The proposal to elevate Stonewall coincides with a contentious national debate over protections for transgender people that is considered the next frontier in the fight for LGBT rights after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage last year.

For Fred Etree, who at 77 years of age still works as a bartender at Stonewall after nearly 50 years, the memories of the riots are vivid. “I was in there dancing with my friends Frank and Charlie when the cops came in and we heard everybody screaming,” Etree recalled. “They came in nasty.” As patrons were being led Etree outside and loaded into poofficers arrived at the lice vans, a crowd of sevStonewall Inn, in the early eral hundred people gathhours of June 28, 1969, to ered in the park across the clear the bar and make street. His administration has also sued North Carolina, saying limits on bathroom access are a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. But state lawmakers say the law, which limits people to using the bathroom of their gender at birth, protects women and
girls from predators. Eleven other states are suing the administration for an overreach of power on the issue. A White House spokeswoman said the president is aware of “the overwhelming support” for the monument proposal from Greenwich Village residents and the LGBT community. But she would not say when he would make a decision or what he is leaning toward doing.

Combative Trump details millions in aid for veterans, attacks the media Speaking from Trump Tower in Manhattan, the presumptive Republican nominee said he’s raised $5.6 million and more money is coming in. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday detailed $5.6 million in contributions he raised for military veterans, and sharply criticized the news media for questioning him for months about what happened to the money. At a combative news conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the billionaire accused the media of failing to give
him credit for raising the funds at an event in January in Iowa. Trump said the money was benefiting 41 groups. He was withering in his criticism. “The press should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump told reporters gathered before him. “You make me look very bad. I’ve never received such bad publicity for doing a good job.” He called an ABC News reporter at the event, Tom Llamas, “sleazy” and said Jim Acosta of CNN was “a real beauty.” Trump’s criticism flew in the face of the hopes of some Republican leaders who want Trump to tone down his rhetoric and become more magnanimous
“The press should be ashamed of themselves. … You make me look very bad. I’ve never received such bad publicity for doing a good job.” Trump told reporters gathered before him
now that he has sealed the Republican presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election. Trump, whose bellicose rhetoric has been a trademark of an insurgent candidacy that has upended the Republican Party, has shown no signs of doing so. Last week, he attacked some of his former rivals for the Republican presi-
dential nomination and a popular Latina Republican governor, Susana Martinez of New Mexico. Trump said the coverage of his veterans group donations had been close to libelous. Asked whether he would keep his adversarial stance with reporters if elected president, Trump said: “Yeah, it’s going to be like this.” REUTERS

On May 27 at about 11:20 p.m. inside an apartment building near East 106th Street and Second Avenue, the suspect approached the 62-year-old victim, took out a knife and demanded money, according to authorities. The suspect — described as a Hispanic man between 35 and 40 years old — can be seen on video pushing the victim and not letting him leave what looks like the building’s main entrance. Prosecutors seek testimony from Sept. 11 victims’ kin in hearing Five men face the death penalty in the case, including Pakistan-born Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who took credit for masterminding the hijacked plane attacks in 2001. U.S. government prosecutors asked a military judge on Tuesday to let 10 relatives of Sept. 11, 2001, victims testify in open court during a pretrial hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Civilian prosecutor Edward Ryan said about 400 relatives have asked to testify. He told Judge Army Colonel James Pohl that his team would like to question the first 10 in October, many of them the elderly parents of victims. He noted that two potential witnesses “wanted
very much to testify,” but have already died. Ryan said one witness would be Lee Hanson from Easton, Connecticut. His granddaughter was the youngest victim in the attacks. Hanson’s son, Peter, was flying with his wife and 2-year-old daughter on United Airlines Flight 175 when it was hijacked and crashed into the South Tower of New York’s World Trade Center. “During the hijacking, Peter called our witness ... and described to him what was going on inside the plane,” said Ryan. “That’s about the only direct evidence we have from someone on Flight 175.” Defense attorneys opposed the request, saying it was inappropriate to depose the witnesses in an open hearing because the remarks could influence

in Cuba include requests by defense lawyers for evidence of how the five suspects were treated at secret Central Intelligence Agency prisons. Proceedings have been plagued by repeated delays, and the case is likely years from going to trial. Seven relatives of Sept. 11 victims are in Guantanamo Bay this week to attend the hearing. Reuters monitored the proceedings over closed-circuit television from a media center at Fort Meade, outside Washington. The case is among a half dozen against Guantanamo inmates. There are 80 prisoners still at the Cuban base, mostly from Yemen. Almost 800 inmates have been transferred as U.S. President Barack Obama tries to fulfill his pledge to close the offshore prison before he leaves office in January. REUTERS
BRIEF Supreme Court rejects constitutional challenge to death penalty The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to hear an appeal asserting that the death penalty violates the U.S. Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment filed by a Louisiana man convicted of fatally shooting his pregnant former girlfriend. Two of the eight justices, liberals Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, said they would have accepted the case, repeating concerns about the death penalty’s constitutionality they raised in a different case last year. The justices, who have sharply disagreed among themselves over capital punishment, declined to consider the appeal brought by Lamondre Tucker, who was sentenced to death for the 2008 murder of 18-year-old Tavia Sills in Shreveport. Sills, nearly five months pregnant, was shot three times and her body was dumped in a pond. Tucker, who is black, had argued in part that black males had an increased likelihood of being convicted of murder and sentenced to death in Louisiana’s Caddo Parish due to endemic racism. REUTERS

eventually generate more than $10 billion in annual sales. It also complements the company’s marketleading infant formula business and could help lift sales of products designed for babies with food intolerance. Nestle has signed a series of similar deals with other small companies in its bid to create a business that is midway be-
tween food and pharmaceuticals. The goal is to find new ways to treat, diagnose and prevent a range of diseases, from gastrointestinal problems to Alzheimer’s. Cow’s milk protein allergies affect as many as 2 percent or 3 percent of infants and toddlers, according to the companies. Many others, however, have symptoms suggestive of the condition, creating a need for a simple diagnostic test. Under the terms of the agreement, DBV will be eligible to receive up to $101 million in development, regulatory and commercial milestones — on top of the up front payment — and will also collect royalties on eventual product sales. US court says no warrant needed for cellphone location data Police do not need a warrant to obtain a person’s cellphone location data held by wireless carriers, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Tuesday, dealing a setback to privacy advocates. The full 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, voted 12-3 that the government can get the information under a decades-old legal theory that it had already been disclosed to a third party, in this case a telephone company. The ruling overturns a divided 2015 opinion from the court’s threejudge panel and reduces the likelihood that the Supreme Court would consider the issue. The decision arose from several armed robberies in Baltimore and Baltimore County, Maryland, in early 2011,
leading to the convictions of Aaron Graham and Eric Jordan. The convictions were based in part on 221 days of cellphone data investigators obtained from wireless provider Sprint, which included about 29,000 location records for the defendants, according to the appeals court opinion. Writing for the majority, Judge Diana Motz said obtaining cell-site information did not violate the protection against unreasonable searches found in the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution because cellphone users are generally aware that they are voluntarily sharing such data with their provider. “Anyone who has stepped outside to ‘get a signal,’ or has warned a

caller of a potential loss of service before entering an elevator, understands, on some level, that location matters,” Motz wrote. Judge James Wynn disagreed, arguing that users do not discretely submit their location the way they would when dialing a phone number or depositing money into a bank. Location data should be exempt from the thirdparty doctrine that affects more traditional records, Wynn argued. REUTERS

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Microsoft back EU hate speech rules
BRIEF California governor endorses Clinton, calls Trump dangerous California Gov. Jerry Brown endorsed Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, saying it was the only way to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. “I have decided to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton because I believe this is the only path forward to win the presidency and stop the dangerous candidacy of Donald Trump,” Brown said in a letter to California Democrats and independents posted online. Brown, a popular Democrat who has steered the nation’s most populous state on a centrist path, praised Clinton’s rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, but noted that she had won about 3 million more votes and hundreds more delegates. “In other words, Clinton’s lead is insurmountable and Democrats have shown — by millions of votes — that they want her as their nominee.” California is the biggest prize of the six states that hold presidential nominating contests on June 7, with 475 delegates. Clinton has secured 2,310 delegates, 73 short of the number needed to clinch her party’s nomi-

nation for the Nov. 8 election. As he noted in his letter, Brown himself waged a populist presidential campaign in 1992, losing to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, with themes similar to many espoused by Sanders, a selfdescribed democratic socialist. Running on the slogan “We the People,” Brown railed against the influence of money in Washington and said politicians were “bought and paid for.” But Brown said Democrats need to stop fighting each other so they can focus on beating Trump, who he said presents a danger to immigrants, the environment and world peace. Facebook, Twitter, Google’s YouTube and Microsoft on Tuesday agreed to an EU code of conduct to tackle online hate speech within 24 hours in Europe. EU governments have been trying in recent months to get social platforms to crack down on rising online racism following the refugee crisis and terror attacks, with some even threatening action against the companies. As part of the pledge agreed with the European Commission, the web giants will review the majority of valid requests for removal of illegal hate speech in less than 24 hours and remove or disable access to the content if necessary. They will also strengthen their cooperation with civil society organizations who help flag hateful content
“This a historic agreement that could not arrive at a better time.” when it goes online and promote “counter-narratives” to hate speech. “The recent terror attacks have reminded us of the urgent need to address illegal online hate speech. Social media is unfortunately one of the tools that terrorist groups use to radicalize young people,” EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said. content and training staff to handle such requests. Twitter has suspended over 125,000 accounts since the middle of 2015 for threatening or promoting terror acts, primarily related to Islamic State. The United States has undertaken similar efforts to entice the cooperation of tech companies in combating online radicalization, focusing on promoting “counter-narratives” to extremist content. EU ministers had called for cooperation with tech companies to be stepped up after the Brussels attacks in March. Jewish lobbyists, frequently the target of hate speech, welcomed the code of conduct. Depp-Heard divorce drama heats up The drama of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s divorce continues to escalate as her claims that the actor repeatedly physically and verbally abused her multiple times during their 15-month marriage come to light. Meanwhile, Depp’s family and friends have come forward to defend the “Through the Looking Glass” star over the weekend. Daughter Lily Rose Depp spoke out on Instagram, writing: “My dad is the sweetest, most loving person I know, he’s been nothing but a wonderful father to my little brother and I, and everyone who knows him would say the same,” alongside a childhood photo. While ex-long-term partner Vanessa Paradis called Heard’s accusations “outrageous” in a hand-written letter to TMZ, adding that he never physically abused her in the duration of

The most damning, however, comes from Depp’s friend Doug Stanhope, who penned a guest column for The Wrap titled “Johnny Depp Is Being Blackmailed By Amber Heard — Here’s How I Know.” We’ll let you guess what that one’s about. ‘The Hills’ to return to MTV for 10th anniversary special
Traditionally, celebrating a 10th anniversary means getting your loved one a tin present. But to celebrate the 10th anniversary of “The Hills,” MTV is giving its audience something even better: a one-off anniversary
special airing Aug. 2. Earlier this week, former “Hills” star Lauren Conrad announced she would be returning to the small screen to commemorate the show’s anniversary. During the special, titled “The Hills:
That Was Then, This Is Now,” Conrad will answer fan questions, look back on her life and dish about “some of the show’s best-kept secrets,” according to MTV News. No word yet on whether Conrad’s former cast members will be joining for the special. But if we had our way, we’d make #WeWantSpeidi a trending hashtag if it meant MTV would bring them on board for one last “YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID” blowout.

Christine and the Queens is your newest French obsession. LINDA LABAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
So our big question is: Has HĂŠloĂŻse Letissier called Elton John back yet? Last month, Sir Elton called the singer, who is best known for leading Christine and the Queens, and he got her voice mail. Surprisingly, she didn’t return his call, and in fact, still hasn’t. What? “I’m really shy and phoning someone sometimes makes me panic,â€? says Letissier, speaking from Paris a couple of weeks before returning to the U.S. for another touring bout. “The phone is weird. You can’t see people’s faces and you’re just talking to them. It makes me anxious.â€? But it’s all good with Sir Elton: “I met him recently and apologized and ex-
plained about that, and he hugged me. I was blushing so hard, it was crazy. But he gave me a big hug, so I think he understood. Her fetching performances find the 27-yearold drawing from Michael Jackson’s signature moves and pairing them with voguing, a la ’80s Madonna. But it’s Letissier’s electro-indie debut album — “Chaleur Humaine, which translates as “human warmth — that’s causing a stir on the pop scene. The record was only released outside France last year after Letissier rerecorded a self-titled version with English-language tracks, allowing new fans into
her imaginative musical world. She found her name and her game in London around 2010 after visiting the Soho nightclub Madame Jojo’s, which was known for its fabulous trans cabaret and sadly closed in 2014 in a gentrification hustle. It was the bravura of the performers at the club that inspired Letissier: Hence, the “Queens were born. But she already had Christine on her side a long time before that. “I was using the name before in various incarnations since I was a kid, says the Nantes native. “My friends and family got used to me talking about Christine. People
would joke, ‘How’s Christine today?’ It’s a stage character not belonging to me. Being free of myself, not belonging to anyone was important. Letissier just scored huge kudos with a knockout performance at Coachella, after which Frank Ocean sought her out backstage. Katy Perry, Sufjan Stevens and the mother of modern dance pop, Madonna, have all given her props recently. “I don’t think about too much, says Letissier of the big-name attention. “This is all happening with my first album, I’m still a baby. The task is not done, it’s just the beginning of something.

Ethan Hawke has been acting for over three decades, but “Maggie’s Plan” was his first time being directed by a woman. Even he’s amazed by that. In the comedy, by Rebecca Miller (“Personal Velocity”), the actor plays an academic who leaves his wife/colleague, Georgette (Julianne Moore), for Greta Gerwig’s Maggie, a younger woman who eventually realizes she might have made a mistake. It gave him the chance to both explore

things he knew well — being a dad who lives in New York City — and see new sides of himself. This is a comedy that’s very casual about presenting how today is lived: how we can fall in and out of love, how couples can split and still keep in contact, how their kids won’t be destroyed by divorce. Yet it’s still a comedy. A lot of the comedies I grew up loving are comedies with great performances that are rooted in recognizable human behavior. One of the things that’s happened is comedy has largely been reoriented towards a 14-year-old male psyche. I laugh at them, too. But if you look at these great Katharine Hepburn or Preston Sturges comedies, they’re really smart. To read a scene where a New Yorker is driving with their stepkids and is worried about where they’re going to park — that’s a movie I want to see. The people in this movie are all likeable and screwed-up, like everyone I know. We’re all trying to get through life. And it’s hard because you screw up all the time, and you screw up with good intentions. You also don’t see many movies about colleagues in a very specific profession — here a particular wing of academia — in relationships. It’s surprising how rarely we
see that in movies. So many of us are colleagues with the people we partner with, in some way, shape or form. This is one of the most surprising things to me about being an adult: I didn’t know that school was the only time I was going to spend really engaged with people who are interested in different things than me. My whole adult life I’ve spent with people who are interested in the arts. I see it with my kids in school. I really want them to enjoy these friendships, because you’ll never be friends with people like that for the rest of your life. Not to say you shouldn’t be, but we all break off into camps. What’s great about John and Georgette’s relationship is that’s how people partner off all the time. It’s refreshing that in the last year there’s been a concerted effort to get more women directing films, to have more chances to get different viewpoints into the market place. I think about it completely from a selfish point of view: that it’s in my best interest [to be directed by women]. I’ve been acting for a long time, and acting for Rebecca was different than acting for a man my age. I need to put myself in a position to be viewed differently. Then, by accident, things start to change. My world is opening up and I’m allowed to be different, to show different sides of me. We collaborate with people who are different from us. It’s in our best interest. It gets you out of your habitual behavior that you didn’t even know you had.

Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have ďŹ nally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry outâ€? and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oilâ€? and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can ďŹ nd out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. Uma Thurman slices up bad guys in “Kill Bill. NETFLIX
Quentin Tarantino is in a dark place right now, even for a guy synonymous with ultra-violence and naughty language. Tarantino might have wanted viewers to watch Uma

Too bad the stitched-together cut — even longer and with a slightly dierent structure — has never materialized on home video. You still have to leave the house to see it, on the o-chance some rep theater has booked it.

BREAKING DOWN THE METS, SYNDERGAARD-UTLEY DEBACLE MARC MALUSIS OPINION Marc Malusis is a columnist for Metro New York and a host on WFAN and CBS Sports Radio. @marcmalusis
There are so many different layers to the Noah Syndergaard ejection on Saturday night after he threw behind Chase Utley in the third inning. First, if you are trying to hit someone, then hit someone. You have pinpoint control. Don’t tell me the pitch got away or it was a warm night out at CitiField. The facts are you sent a purpose pitch toward Utley and got run out of the game. Let’s not forget, Syndergaard did pitch in Las Vegas before getting called up to the majors. I don’t want to hear about sweat and perspiration, but all this is being said because he wants to avoid some sort of suspension by Major League
Baseball. Second, in today’s day and age and especially after the brawl that we all witnessed in Arlington between the Rangers and Blue Jays, you can’t be surprised that Syndergaard was thrown out of the game. Add to the fact that AL MVP Josh Donaldson of the Blue Jays told SportsNet a week ago that MLB needs to do something about protecting players from beanballs. Donaldson was nearly hit by two consecutive pitches by Twins starter Phil Hughes last Sunday. Donaldson said, “They say they’re trying to protect players. They make a rule that says you can’t slide hard into second base. They make a rule to protect the catchers on slides into home. But when you throw a ball at somebody, nothing’s done about it.” It is the modern game and they do not let players police the game like they used to. Plus, it is not like retribution on Utley was not a major talking point when the Mets visited Los Angeles earlier this season and it was certainly a talking point when this holiday weekend series got going on Friday night. Why the need to gain some sort of retribution for a late slide in an October playoff series that you won? Well of course, that is old-school baseball. But, let’s not forget the Mets won the divisional series, and that, my friends, is the most important thing. You can understand the Rangers getting retribution on

Bautista because he flipped the bat and showed them up in a series that they lost. The Mets won the series and are still looking for payback for a player they cut in spring training because they did not want to pay him. Ironically, on the same day that this saga played out with the Dodgers, the Cardinals were optioning Ruben Tejada to the minor leagues. So, as Syndergaard was walking back to the dugout and the Mets were bringing in Logan Verrett to take over, was
it worth it? As Chase Utley hit a solo homer and then followed up with a grand slam, was it worth it? On a night when the Mets honored their ’86 team that won a World Series, they lost 9-1. Was it worth it? I ask was it worth it because the facts are Syndergaard did not even accomplish his goal of hitting Utley. He threw behind him. So you can’t be surprised or stunned that Syndergaard was not warned and was thrown out because the history
between Utley and the Mets and what transpired down in Arlington a few weeks back. The Mets wanted payback and they accomplished nothing Saturday night as they got embarrassed on the field and looked foolish answering questions after it. There was no other way to handle the questions after because they want to avoid any kind of suspension from MLB. However, they should have taken care of Utley in Los Angeles, and if you did not do
it there, then you should have bagged it altogether. Mets manager Terry Collins warned his team to not do anything in Los Angeles and the same sort of warning should have been delivered this weekend. It wasn’t, and it cost the Mets a game. Hopefully it does not cost Syndergaard more games. The Mets gained nothing from the experience Saturday night, other than a loss. They won in October and they lost in May. Was it worth it?
NYCFC now in legit funk after 2-2 draw New York City’s home woes have continued following Sunday’s 2-2 tie with Orlando City. Normally a draw isn’t the end of the world, but when considering the recent play of NYCFC, it’s easy to see why star midfielder Andrea Pirlo used a word like “frustrating” to describe his team’s recent play. Coming off the most embarrassing defeat in City’s brief history — a 7-0 home thrashing at the hands of rival New York Red Bulls — City was likely counting on rectifying matters with Orlando in town. And almost as expected, the central Flori-
da squad was in obliging mood, going down 2-0 late in the contest. But a funny thing happened to NYCFC en route to what should’ve been an easy march to victory: They began making mistakes that star-studded — and pricey — teams shouldn’t be making. When David Villa stepped into the penalty spot at the 70th minute and was almost assuredly ready to put the game away, the Spanish legend slipped and shanked his attempt, giving Orlando new life. They in turn were able to equalize the contest with two late goals and steal a draw from
the stunned Yankee Stadium crowd. It was a rare miscue for one of the league’s best players — who is leading the league with nine goals — but it was also a microcosm for what’s been going wrong for City lately. The loss to the Red Bulls is one thing — NYCFC hasn’t beaten them yet — but the way City had its late lead erased by Orlando (3-3-7, 16 points) may actually sting more. The Lions were missing team captain Kaká and four other starters, playing on a strange pitch that’s angled across the outfield of the stadium, and closing out their third
game in eight days. That game should’ve been a get-well opportunity for the sagging club. Yet, here they are sitting at 4-4-6 and second-guessing themselves. Even head coach Patrick Vieira noted afterward that they need to be more “ruthless in front of the goal” and need to show “more desire to defend.” Vieira should take some solace that City’s overall performance was a definitive improvement over last week’s drubbing, but when the standings are as close as they are in the Eastern Conference, every game counts.
