FAMILY SAYS BOY WHO FELL IN ZOO GORILLA AREA ‘DOING WELL’

1

The family of a 3-year-old boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, prompting the killing of the endangered animal in order to rescue the child, said on Wednesday the boy is doing well and suggested donations in the gorilla’s name. The family, whose name has not been released by police, said it had been offered money, without specifying what the funds were intended for, but said it would not accept financial gifts. “If anyone wishes to make a gift, we recommend a donation to the Cincinnati Zoo in Harambe’s name,” the family said in a statement distributed by a spokeswoman. TEXAS RIVER HITS CENTURY HIGH, HOUSTON BRACES FOR FLOODS

2

The Brazos River in Texas surged to its highest in more than a century in an area outside of Houston on Wednesday after floods killed at least six people, damaged hundreds of buildings and turned roads into lakes over the past week. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for large parts of the state, includes sections near Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston. Storms lasting until the weekend could send even more rivers over their banks, it said. Parts of the Houston area, where eight people were killed by floods that hit in April, could see as much as 10 inches of rain over the coming days, the NWS said. This could tip off another round of floods in the fourth most-populous U.S. city, it added. Houston has activated its emergency operations center and opened evacuation shelters as forecasters warned of a new round of heavy rains and flooding. REUTERS

US MOVES TO REDUCE SALT IN RESTAURANT, PACKAGED FOOD

3

The United States moved on Wednesday to cut the amount of salt in packaged and restaurant food in a bid to reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes linked to consuming too much sodium. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued draft guidelines for major food manufacturers and big chain restaurants that are aimed at reducing salt in foods such as soup, pizza, deli meat, dips, hamburgers, baked goods, snack foods and more. The agency’s move is aimed at lowering the average American’s salt consumption by a third, saying people in the United States consume almost 50 percent more sodium than recommended by most experts. Boston’s western suburbs awake to find a moose on the loose

Residents up early in the western Boston suburbs of Watertown and Belmont were startled by the sight of an adult female moose trotting along the streets and sidewalks before heading into a wooded area. But not as surprised as the moose, perhaps, once it realized it had wandered overnight into a town. “Then in the morning, when all the human activity is going on, it probably gave the moose some pause,” said Marion Larson, of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. “Like, ‘I’m not in Kansas anymore.’” Larson said the moose likely followed water and grassy areas as it moved east during the night. Although there are an estimated 1,200 moose in Massachusetts,

a moose on the loose near Boston is a rarity. The last instance Larson could recall was in 1996, when one was spotted clomping through Cleveland Circle. Video of the moose shows it moving at a pretty impressive pace on suburban sidewalks, most likely after it was spooked by police cruisers and other vehicles, Larson said. If everything goes well over the next day or so, the moose should naturally figure out a way to move back west on its own. In order for that to happen, Larson said, humans need to stay as far away as possible. “Don’t go looking for it. Don’t go chasing after it,” Larson said. “We don’t need to raise the stress level and make it more confused and concerned.” Moose are among the most dangerous animals humans can encounter. The largest animal in the deer family, moose can grow to more than 6 feet at the shoulder and weigh upward of 1,200 pounds. They prefer to leave humans alone, but if disturbed or threatened they can respond by charging. While

fatalities are extremely rare, several people are attacked and injured by moose every year. In the 1996 incident, according to an account in a 2001 issue of The Boston Globe, the adventurous moose “was finally discovered taking a comfortable afternoon nap alongside the Green Line” near the city’s western edge. Larson said she would be surprised if the moose that trotted through Boston’s suburbs Wednesday chose to move closer to noisier, busier Boston instead of heading west. Still, it’s something wildlife experts have to pre-

pare for just in case. “That would be a very difficult situation, not that this is easy right now,” she said. “As they say, never say never.” Authorities in Belmont said that the animal was last seen around Concord Avenue, according to CBS Boston. “Obviously this is a very unique situation, a moose in an environment like Watertown,” Watertown Police Detective Lt. James O’Connor told The Boston Globe. “Definitely out of the ordinary.” There have been no reports of damage caused by the moose, WCVB stated.

How did a young girl end up getting her arm stuck in a door on the Green Line? The MBTA is investigating after the girl — identified in news reports as 8-year-old Faith Felt — reportedly had a pair of B Line doors close on her right arm while stepping off the trolley ahead of her mother at Harvard Avenue about 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Felt was later treated for a sprained wrist at a nearby hospital. The operator, who has not been identified, has been placed on leave while the investigation is underway. He passed a “fitness for duty” test after the incident, according to T records. Accounts from Felt’s mother, Mitzia, and the MBTA about what happened differed on who was to blame for the accident. The elder Felt described a chaotic scene

in interviews with news media. “[My daughter] was struggling and fighting with the door,” Felt said told WCVB. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ and was trying to get the door open with my umbrella. That’s when the door popped open.” Then, she said, she approached the driver before he steered the trolley away from the stop. “I go in front of the conductor and I’m like, ‘Really?’” Felt said. “‘Oh I’m sorry. I’m sorry,’ [the

conductor said]. And then [my daughter] is yelling and screaming, she’s crying.” The next car to approach the stop called in the incident and requested medical attention, according to T records. The T’s driver offered a different version of the events in an incident report “After everyone cleared my doors, I was closing my doors and a daughter jumped out of A3 door, and turn [sic] around and put her hand

back to the closing door so she could open for her mother,” the operator wrote. “I reacted and I opened the doors back open. I waited for the family and I asked if everything is OK. They mother said, ‘Yes, she is fine, you are all set.’” Generally, trolley cars rely on T operators’ judgment to control the entryways to train cars, T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “Motor persons are required to make sure that customers are free and clear of the doors,” he wrote in an email. MBTA street car doors are also equipped with “sensitive edges,” Pesaturo said, which are “designed to reopen doors if they come in contact with anything.” He added: “The MBTA strongly discourages people from sticking their arms into a trolley door in an attempt to prevent it from closing.” SPENCER BUELL

Transgender bill opponents chant “no outside of House chamber as lawmakers began to address amendments to a public accommodations anti-discrimination bill on Wednesday. ANTONIO CABAN/SHNS

House approves transgender bill after emotional debate Wednesday In a major victory for equal rights activists, legislation aimed at preventing discrimination against transgender individuals in all public places, including bathrooms, passed the House on Wednesday, clearing one of the last remaining hurdles for the decade-old policy proposal. The House voted 116-36 in favor of the bill (H 4343) that would bar discrimination against transgender individuals in public accommodations and allow people to use public facilities that match their gender identity rather than their biological sex. Twelve Democrats voted against the bill, while eight Republicans supported it, giving House leadership the veto-proof majority it wasn’t sure it had leading into the debate. The Senate has already passed a similar bill, and Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, shed his neutrality Tuesday on the eve of the House debate by coming out in favor of the House’s version, indicating he would sign that bill after “hearing from all sides. The vote capped a long journey for proponents of the bill who were unsuccessful in advancing the legislation over an eightyear period when the State House was entirely controlled by Democrats. Rep. John Fernandes, the House chairman of the Judiciary Committee, kicked off the emotional day of debate at the State House by calling public accommodations the “bedrock of anti-discrim-

ination and a natural extension of the 2011 law that protected transgender individuals from discrimination in the workplace and housing. “You can’t tell people it’s OK to work at the diner, but it’s not to sit at the lunch counter. We learned that a long time ago, Fernandes said. With proponents and opponents of the bill crowding two floors of the State House outside the House chamber, lawmakers engaged in a lengthy back-and-forth over the controversial measure. In the hallways, opponents brought by the Massachusetts Family Institute chanted, “No, while supporters in the House gallery applauded each opening speech in support of the bill. The debate drew more people to the State House than any other issue this session as many watched on television screens set up outside the chamber as overflow viewing areas. Critics of the bill, pushing a slate of amendments, argued it intrudes on privacy rights of more than 99 percent of population by allowing individuals to use bathrooms they associate with their gender identity, and opens the door for abuses by those who would prey on women and children. Many amendments were geared toward legislating access to bathrooms and locker rooms. The bill’s final details may be worked out by a conference committee, unless legislative leaders can address differences informally. SHNS

Trump donates $75K to Boston veterans charity Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced at a news conference Tuesday a list of 41 charities to which he’s donated a total of $5.6 million. Among those charities is Boston-based New England’s Wounded Veterans. The group posted a letter to Facebook last week from the Trump Organization indicating that the Donald J. Trump Foundation had

enclosed a check for $75,000. The group’s founder, Andrew Biggio, told the Boston Globe that he didn’t expect to see such a large donation. “When I opened the envelope, I thought maybe it would be a couple grand or something,â€? Biggio, a Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said. “To see $75,000, I ran back and forth [around] the same room.â€? Biggio said a portion of the

donation will help a young Marine travel from Virginia to Philadelphia for a double-arm transplant. The founder told the Globe that a fellow Marine’s father works as a bodyguard for Trump. The Marine, with whom Biggio had once served, asked his father to mention the non-

proďŹ t as a worthy cause. It wasn’t long before the check arrived in the mail. Biggio’s organization is known for its Wounded Veterans Ride, a motorcycle ride around the country that raises funds for disabled veterans. ALEXIS SACHDEV

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton GETTY IMAGES

Clinton is to deliver what her campaign described as a major speech on Thursday in San Diego to underscore what she feels would be the threat posed by Trump to U.S. national security if he is elected president on Nov. 8. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign signaled on Wednesday plans for a big assault on Republican Donald Trump even as she battles to hold off rival Bernie Sanders in California. The effort to define Trump as unfit to be commander-in-chief comes as Clinton faces fierce opposition from Sanders, a senator from Vermont who has insisted on staying in the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination despite Clinton’s nearly insurmountable lead. California’s June 7 primary is shaping up to be pivotal in the Democratic contest, with Clinton holding a 13-point advantage over Sanders, 51 percent to 38 percent,

according to the Hoover Institution’s Golden State Poll in the state. Clinton, with 2,312 delegates, needs 71 delegates more to reach the required 2,383 for the Democratic nomination. Sanders has 1,545. At stake in the California primary are 548 delegates that are awarded proportional to the vote. Five other states also vote on June 7, including New Jersey, which could also turn the tide for Clinton. Despite Clinton’s perceived advantage, there are lingering concerns among some Democrats about possible weakness given the protracted battle with Sanders, a democratic socialist whose calls for free college tuition have energized young voters. Doug Schoen, a Democratic pollster, wrote in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that California appeared to be trending toward Sanders in recent days. Sanders has been holding multiple events each day in the state this week. Clinton canceled a New Jersey event to go to California a day earlier than anticipated and is to stay there until June 6. “The inevitability behind Mrs. Clinton’s nomination will be in large measure eviscerated if she

loses the June 7 California primary to Bernie Sanders. That could well happen,” Schoen wrote. Other Democrats expressed confidence in Clinton’s position and her move to assail Trump on foreign policy. “I think she has to,” said Democratic strategist Jim Manley. “Leaving aside California, I think they can’t just ignore Donald Trump in that they should be spending a majority of time focusing on him instead of Sanders at this point, because based on the math Sanders can’t win.” Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the election, has faced criticism for a variety of positions on foreign policy, such as his willingness to talk to North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and his idea that Japan and South Korea might need to develop nuclear arsenals. On the other hand, past Republican presidents and current Democratic President Barack Obama have, like Trump, said NATO nations should pay more for their defense to ease the U.S. burden. Trump, however, has declared NATO obsolete and in need of reconfiguring. REUTERS

US Federal Reserve records show dozens of cybersecurity breaches

The Federal Reserve Building in Lower Manhattan GETTY IMAGES

The Federal Reserve detected more than 50 cyber breaches between 2011 and 2015, with several incidents described internally as “espionage,” according to Fed records. The Fed’s computer systems play a critical role in global banking and hold confidential information on discussions about monetary policy that drives financial markets. The cybersecurity reports, obtained by Reuters through a Freedom of Information Act request, were heavily redacted by Fed officials to keep secret the central bank’s security procedures. The Fed declined to comment, and the redacted records do not say who hacked the bank’s systems or whether they accessed sensitive information or stole money. “Hacking is a major threat to the stability of the financial system. This data shows why,” said

James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. Lewis reviewed the files at the request of Reuters. The records represent only a slice of all cyber attacks on the Fed because they include only cases involving the Washingtonbased Board of Governors, a federal agency that is subject to public records laws. Reuters did not have access to reports by local cybersecurity teams at the central bank’s 12 privately owned regional branches. The disclosure of breaches at the Fed comes at a time when cybersecurity at central banks worldwide is under scrutiny after hackers stole $81 million from a Bank Bangladesh account at the New York Fed. Cyber thieves have targeted large financial institutions around the world,

including America’s largest bank JPMorgan, as well as smaller players like Ecuador’s Banco del Austro and Vietnam’s Tien Phong Bank. Hacking attempts were cited in 140 of the 310 reports provided by the Fed board. In some reports, the incidents were not classified in any way. In eight information breaches between 2011 and 2013 - a time when the Fed’s trading desk was buying massive amounts of bonds — Fed staff wrote that the cases involved “malicious code,” referring to software used by hackers. Four hacking incidents in 2012 were considered acts of “espionage,” according to the records. Information was disclosed in at least two of those incidents, according to the records. In the other two incidents, the records did not indicate whether there was a breach. REUTERS

Without the black boxes, say investigators and aviation disaster experts, there is not enough information to determine what went wrong or whether the plane was brought down deliberately. The recorders are designed to emit acoustic signals for 30 days after a crash, giving search teams fewer than three weeks to spot them in waters up to 9,840feet deep, which is on the edge of their range. The Egyptian investigation committee said on Wednesday that the search was intensifying

ahead of the arrival of another vessel, the John Lethbridge, from Mauritius-based company Deep Ocean Search to help retrieve the devices. That ship is expected to arrive within a week, it said. “Search equipment aboard French naval vessel Laplace … has detected signals from the seabed of the search area, which likely belong to one of the data boxes,” the Egyptian committee said in its statement. France’s aviation accident bureau BEA confirmed that the signal had come from one of the recorders. REUTERS

BRIEF French vessel detects signals from EgyptAir jet black box A French search vessel has picked up signals from one of the black boxes of EgyptAir flight MS804, Egyptian and French investigators said, a potential breakthrough in efforts to uncover why it plummeted into the Mediterranean last month. Search teams are working against the clock to recover the two flight recorders that will offer vital clues to the fate of the plane that crashed en route from Paris to Cairo on May 19 killing all 66 people on board.

A murder-suicide killed two people at the University of California, Los Angeles on Wednesday, shutting down the campus for two hours as officers in camouflage and tactical gear responded to reports of a shooting. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck confirmed one man shot another and then himself in the engineering building and that police recovered a gun at the scene. “There are no suspects outstanding and no continuing threat to UCLA’s campus, Beck told reporters without offering further details about the victims. Police recovered what may turn out to be a suicide note, Beck said. President Barack Obama was briefed aboard Air Force One and he asked his team to keep him updated, White House spokesman Josh

Earnest said. After several tense hours, university officials announced classes would resume on Thursday. At least three city blocks leading into the campus were filled with dozens of emergency vehicles. Officers with rifles, bulletproof vests and helmets surrounded the area. An armored car was parked in the middle of one intersection, and helicopters clattered overhead. UCLA, with more than 43,000 students, is in the Westwood section of Los Angeles and one of the more well-regarded schools in the University of California system,

“It appears to be entirely contained. ... There are no suspects outstanding and no continuing threat to UCLA’s campus. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck

I don’t want to stay here. Engineering student Aaron Feigelman said he received a text message alerting him to an emergency and entered an adjacent building, where he and five others took refuge for 90 minutes. “We just bolted out of there and ran up to the seventh floor, Feigelman said. “We tied the bathroom door hinges with belts to keep the door closed because there were no locks. And we just waited. It was really scary. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti praised the people of UCLA for “extraordinary grace and calm and lamented the violence at a place of learning. “I am heartbroken by the sight of SWAT teams running down avenues normally filled with students, and angered by the fear that one person with a firearm can inflict on a community, Garcetti said. Megan Fox gets advice from her unborn child. “I feel like you receive messages from the child if you’re open to it,” the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” star tells Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night show. “This baby wanted me to live somewhere else so we’re moving to a whole different place in Los Angeles because I feel like that’s where this baby wants to be raised.” Before you scoff that a fetus could have a mystical connection to the geography of L.A., Fox isn’t taking its advice out of pure maternal instinct. “This baby is also

The “Hotline Bling” rapper was reportedly “getting cozy” at his Memorial Day bash this past weekend with 19-year-old model Hailey Baldwin. On Tuesday night, the pair further fed rumors when they went out for a night on the town in Los Angeles — hitting up Ysabel for dinner, followed by The Nice Guy in West Hollywood. A source told E! Later on, he took to Instagram to address the haters who have been criticizing him for his lavish spending. On Wednesday, Brown posted a photo of the gifts he bought for Royalty to his social media account, along with the caption: “You can call me ‘ghetto’ for spending money on

my daughter but along with these material things which have no possible values to teach humility, self confidence and equality, I also will be spending twice as much on her education, Health, and development as a YOUNG WOMAN!” We can only imagine what Royalty’s sweet 16 is going to look like. Someone get us on the invite list, please.

The rules were strict for Caitlyn in the Jenner household. In a new interview with AOL’s Makers, Caitlyn Jenner opened up about rules ex-wife Kris put in place during their marriage. At home, she was not allowed to dress as a woman. “I respected that and kind of kept it away

but it was always there,” the “I Am Cait” star said. On the road, however, Kris said Caitlyn was welcome to dress as she pleased. In the interview, she said she did just that for years in an attempt to “deal with it.” Despite the enforced dress code, the two now seem to be on good terms.

“Me Before You may look like a simple romantic drama — a British Nicholas Sparks knockoff about the love between a young working class woman (Emilia Clarke) and a man paralyzed from the neck down (Sam Claflin). But it can get pretty heavy. Claflin feels that way, too. The British actor, best known as Finnick Odair in the “Hunger Games films, had to rein himself in both physically and emotionally, playing a character whose accident has left him bitter and maybe suicidal, plus at least initially resistant to the young woman who’s become his caretaker. Claflin talks to us about the difficulties of making a romance equal parts dark and sweet.

Your character doesn’t start o in a very happy space. He’s let his hair and beard grow, he wears frumpy clothes. But before he cleans up he still almost looks like Lord Byron. I loved being able to hide under all the baggy clothes and long hair and the beard. The only problem was if one of the hairs went on a little trip across my

face it was impossible for me to [swats]. That’s the harsh reality of filming something like this. I struggled mostly with little moments like that, those little things I had to stop myself doing instinctually. I was constantly reminding myself, “Don’t move, don’t move, don’t move. It became very difficult not to use my body. When she was crying I wanted to reach my hand out to comfort her. It was very, very difficult to maintain. He also has to communicate almost entirely through words. He’s a very intelligent and charming man, and he’s very witty. He’s very good with words. You realize we express ourselves every day with our body. But for him it’s all about what he says. He has to think about everything before he says it, and he often says things that cut people in half. He’s had to learn to use his words to get his point across

quickly. That was one of the big challenges for me, because I’m not great with words. [Laughs] Were there any other things that were taxing? I lost a lot of weight. It was important to me that he looked weak and frail and not well. I think I lost about 3½ stone [49 pounds] in three months. When we were rehearsing I was eating 500 calories and training three times a day. So I had no energy. [Clarke] would walk into the rehearsal room and I’d be curled up on the sofa, shivering, almost crying to myself. It was my decision. I spoke to a few people who were going through something similar and they said every time they went into hospital they lost weight because the food was so bad. So I did the weight loss thing — not to the extremes of Christian Bale or Matthew McConaughey. And that, too [laughs], was very challenging. MATT PRIGGE

The way to the heart A local author celebrates the art of gifting food.

The Readable Feast, Boston’s first ever cookbook festival, kicks off June 17-18 at the Boston Public Market. The event will honor New England cooking tomes. We caught up with Maggie Battista, founder of eatboutique. com and author of “Food Gift Love,” to give you a sample of what’s in store. There’s something nostalgic about homemade food gifts. What inspired you to make it modern? People have built up the idea of a gift as something that has to be fancy, or expensive, or exactly what they want at any given moment, because you know them so well. I just want to say, “Hey, make something you love that you think

they might love, put a tag on it and give it to them. And do it more frequently. Share the things that you love with people, and they’ll share that with other people.” You worked at Nokia. How did you transition from tech to food? I worked at technology startups for almost 15 years. I started the blog, Eat Boutique, as a way to write on the side, and figure out the passions I had for food, artisans and the craft behind it. A couple years in, I put together a gift box of treats from all

the he artisans I had written about. I made a couple hundred boxes and they sold out instantly. You selected 80 recipe testers for “Food Gift Love.” What did you learn? The whole point of testing is to make sure your language and words are understood by the reader, and they end up with the dish as described. When I say “swirl,” what does that mean to you? It was a six-month education in how people cook in their kitchens, and what flavors resonate with them.

11

W a sharp knife, score the With peel of the blood oranges into four big wedges. Peel the thick skin wedges away from the fruit, discarding any loose pith fibers. Set the skin aside. Slice the blood oranges in half, juice them with a hand juicer, reserve. Slice the orange rinds into strips 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch wide. If the blood orange peel has a very thick white pith, trim a touch of the white pith away and discard. Do not trim too much, as the pith is what retains the sweetness once candied. Place the rinds in a pot and cover with enough cold water to cover by an inch.

Bring to a boil and then boil for 3 minutes. Drain. Repeat this process 3 more times. Boiling the rinds several times helps to remove extra bitterness. On the last drain, put the fruit aside for a moment. In a clean pot, add the sugar, water and reserved 1/2 cup blood orange juice. Bring to a boil and then add the rinds. Return to a boil over high heat and then reduce the heat to medium. Cook the rinds for 45 minutes, or until the syrup is very thick and the rinds are barely translucent.

Do not stir the pot; just keep swirling the liquid in the pot in order to keep the rinds fully submerged. If you smell any sign of burning, immediately lower the heat and swirl, swirl, swirl. When ready, remove the rinds from the syrup (a few at a time) with tongs and dry them on a rack or a piece of parchment paper, making sure to not let them touch each other (they’ll stick!) Let them dry for 4 to 6 hours or overnight. If they are still a bit wet, let them dry a little longer. When dry, dredge the rinds through sugar. I prefer organic granulated sugar, as the color is a bit more translucent and the rind color shines through, but traditional white granulated sugar is fine, too. You may need to press the sugar up against the rinds to ensure that it sticks well. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 weeks or in the fridge for up to 3 months.

Somerville’s got Taste The annual foodie event kicks off next week. CARLY OLSON @carlyolson28 letters@metro.us

On June 8, Somerville’s vibrant restaurant community has a chance to show off. At the 18th annual Taste of Somerville Festival, more than 60 local restaurants, breweries and wineries will present their finest to an eager crowd of foodies in Davis Square. “We want to include restaurants that have been around forever as well as new ones,” explains Morgan Bigley, Highland Kitchen’s general manager and the organizer of this year’s event. Though Taste of Somerville has been around for nearly two decades, Bigley notes there are some changes brewing for 2016: a new and improved VIP tent, which includes exclusive access to cocktails and grub by experimental fine-dining establishment Tasting Counter. Taste also recruited several craft breweries to showcase their libations this year, including Somerville’s own Aeronaut Brewing Co. and Winter Hill Brewing Co. “The diversity of breweries is a new angle that

How to see Africa by boat See more of the continent on a cruise.

Visiting Africa can be an exciting — if somewhat daunting — proposition, with 50-plus nations full of wondrous wildlife, transporting landscapes and fascinating cultures. A hassle-free cruise is an excellent way to sample the continent by exploring Africa’s lengthy coastlines and numerous isles. Just be warned: Africa cruising options are largely the domain of luxury cruise lines, which means they won’t come cheap. ELISSA GARAY

Botswana Set out to explore a lesserknown slice of Africa aboard the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen, a plush vessel with floor-to-ceiling windows, airy staterooms

behind this Thanksgiving and set out on this 15-night sail with upscale Regent Seven Seas. Cruising round-trip from Cape Town on Nov. 16, 2016, guests aboard the newly renovated, 490-passenger Seven Seas Navigator will trace the coast of South Africa (with stops in Mossel Bay, Richards Bay, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth), as well as dip into Mozambique (at Maputo) and Namibia (at Walvis Bay). The line’s all-inclusive fares bundle in lots of extras, such as round-trip airfare and three-night pre- or post-cruise land-based extensions. as well as two nights on the ground in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. On the cruise, look out for excursion highlights like a full-day 4x4 safari in Botswana’s Chobe National Park and a cable car ride up to Cape Town’s Table Mountain.

South Africa, Namibia & Mozambique Plan ahead for holidays to truly remember aboard luxury Crystal Cruises’ 922-passenger Crystal Symphony. This epic 16-night journey in December 2017 will take in the best of South Africa (at Cape Town, Richards Bay, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth), along with stops in Mozambique (at Maputo) and Namibia (at Walvis Bay and Luderitz). Excursion highlights include a helicopter tour above South Africa’s soaring Drakensberg mountains.

Botswana, Namibia & Zimbabwe Riverboat operator CroisiEurope will introduce its first African cruise itinerary in fall 2017, aboard a new luxury vessel that will navigate shallow sections of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers in Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. On board, just 16 passengers enjoy eight balcony-trimmed deluxe cabins, as well as a panoramic restaurant, lounge and rooftop patio.

CroisiEurope’s eight-night cruise-and-land itineraries will pair five nights aboard the riverboat with an additional three nights in one of two new CroisiEurope-owned luxury lodges in Namibia (the base for an excursion to Victoria Falls). The cruise route will emphasize wildlife viewing and cultural immersion.

Seychelles Chances are you’ve already fantasized about the beaches of the Seychelles, whose pristine, palm-fringed shores have graced the covers of glossy travel magazines. A cruise is an ideal way to uncover the many hidden lures and charms of these far-flung isles. Greek-owned Variety Cruises runs seven-night sailings here year-round aboard the recently renovated 44-passenger M/Y Pegasus motor yacht. Cruising round-trip from Mahe, the boat stops at different island locales each day, with highlights like Praslin, site of the UNESCO-protected Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve; the famous nearby Cote d’Or beaches; or Curieuse Island, home to some 250 giant tortoises. Back on deck, enjoy open-air barbecues or seaside pampering at the minispa.

South Africa, Mozambique & Namibia Leave the kitchen hassles

South Africa, Madagascar & more British-owned Voyages of Discovery offers enrichment-focused sailings, with a smattering of African voyages highlighted each year. Its one-off 14-night cruise coming in March 2017 is a combined voyage to select African islands with calls along South Africa’s coast. Kicking off in Mauritius, guests will have a chance to visit the islands of Reunion and Madagascar, before swooping along coastal South Africa, with safari-primed stops in Richards Bay (gateway to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park) and Port Elizabeth (close to Addo Elephant National Park), as well as in bustling multicultural cities like Durban and Cape Town. Onboard the 540-passenger Voyager, guests can enjoy guest speakers and workshops with professional photographers.

African Islands Set off to cruise Africa’s Indian Ocean islands aboard upscale Ponant’s 264-passenger Le Lyrial. Embarking in April, the line’s new 15-night expedition leaves from mainland South Africa at Durban to tour several rarely visited island destinations in Madagascar, the “Scattered Islands” and the Seychelles, where it ultimately disembarks. En route, head out on expert-led tours of nature reserves.

Make-or-break offseason for Bruins Key decisions will be made in the coming weeks. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

Ever since the Bruins choked away another April and missed out on the NHL playoffs for the second straight season in eerily similar fashion, things have been understandably quiet over on Causeway Street. Head coach Claude Julien surprisingly managed to keep his job for another campaign and last week, the team didn’t exactly thrill their loyal fans by signing shaky defenseman Kevan Miller (5 goals, 13 assists, plus-18 in 71 games last season) to a head-scratching four-year deal worth $10 million. Why the team felt the need to do that with an ideally third pairing defenseman when they just did the same thing last summer to a similarly

injury-prone right-shot (Adam McQuaid) makes you wonder what GM Don Sweeney is prioritizing these days. Sweeney is only going into his second full season in charge, but no doubt there will be immense pressure on him after he doubled down on Julien (he could have fired him last season as well after he was promoted), not to mention the fact that these are consecutive years without playoff hockey in Boston. Before training camp and preseason starts in late September, Sweeney and the front office have plenty of work to do as they try to improve a roster that simply hasn’t been good enough over these last few seasons. Right wing Loui Eriksson (30 goals, 33 assists, plus-13 in 82 games last season) is obviously the headliner of five unrestricted free agents for the B’s that also include center Chris Kelly, right wing Lee Stempniak, defenseman

)NJURED

John-Michael Liles and backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson. After much debate, the Bruins chose not to move Eriksson at the trade deadline this year, thereby running the

risk of losing out on him when free agency begins in a month (July 1). Eriksson will be 31 in July and he’s coming off a real solid season, so after making $4.25 million in 2015-

16 he’ll no doubt be expecting a raise. He’s not an integral player for Boston though in the sense that they shouldn’t overpay just to keep him around. Defenseman Torey

Krug (4 goals, 40 assists, plus-9 in 81 games) leads the group of six restricted free agents for the Bruins that also includes right wings Brett Connolly and Tyler Randell, center Landon Ferraro, defensemen Joe Morrow and Zach Trotman. Krug (who made $3.4 million in 2015-16) was snakebitten last season when it came to goalscoring, but like it or not, he’s one of Boston’s best defensemen, so they’ll need him. It’s unlikely that they would ditch Morrow and Trotman this soon into their pro careers since they don’t seem to have many other options — at least in-house. Some possible targets for the B’s in free agency this summer are dependable right wings like Radim Vrbata, Kyle Okposo and Troy Brouwer, not to mention veteran defensemen like Alex Goligoski, Dan Boyle, Nikita Nikitin and Dan Hamhuis. FANTASY BASEBALL: ADVICE ON CLOSING THE GAP IN STANDINGS KYLE BISHOP OPINION Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller. com. His articles and Fantasy Baseball Rankings are your secret weapon for winning fantasy leagues.

With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror, many fantasy owners are staring up at their rivals in the standings and feeling the pressure of falling behind. If you’re among them, here are some tips

to help you close the gap.

with another guy or playing matchups can help you extract every bit of value from them. Don’t be afraid to keep a few spots at the back of your roster designated solely for streaming hitters on a hot streak or pitchers who are going against weak lineups.

Review the numbers When looking at your roster, it isn’t always easy to tell where your strengths and weaknesses lie. For instance, you may have several players with high averages or double-digit home run totals, but if they did the bulk of their damage before landing on your roster, that isn’t going to be reected in your team’s results. Using the tools available on each of the major platforms, you’ll be able to see the accumulated stats for your team (and every other one), as well as each individual player’s production while on the roster. Determine where your team isn’t getting it done, and focus your eorts on shoring up those areas. You can also look at where your rivals are vulnerable and use this as leverage.
