FAMILY SAYS BOY WHO FELL IN ZOO GORILLA AREA ‘DOING WELL’
1
The family of a 3-year-old boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, prompting the killing of the endangered animal in order to rescue the child, said on Wednesday the boy is doing well and suggested donations in the gorilla’s name. The family, whose name has not been released by police, said it had been offered money, without specifying what the funds were intended for, but said it would not accept financial gifts. “If anyone wishes to make a gift, we recommend a donation to the Cincinnati Zoo in Harambe’s name,” the family said in a statement distributed by a spokeswoman. TEXAS RIVER HITS CENTURY HIGH, HOUSTON BRACES FOR FLOODS
2
The Brazos River in Texas surged to its highest in more than a century in an area outside of Houston on Wednesday after floods killed at least six people, damaged hundreds of buildings and turned roads into lakes over the past week. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for large parts of the state, includes sections near Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston. Storms lasting until the weekend could send even more rivers over their banks, it said. Parts of the Houston area, where eight people were killed by floods that hit in April, could see as much as 10 inches of rain over the coming days, the NWS said. This could tip off another round of floods in the fourth most-populous U.S. city, it added. Houston has activated its emergency operations center and opened evacuation shelters as forecasters warned of a new round of heavy rains and flooding. REUTERS
US MOVES TO REDUCE SALT IN RESTAURANT, PACKAGED FOOD
3
The United States moved on Wednesday to cut the amount of salt in packaged and restaurant food in a bid to reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes linked to consuming too much sodium. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued draft guidelines for major food manufacturers and big chain restaurants that are aimed at reducing salt in foods such as soup, pizza, deli meat, dips, hamburgers, baked goods, snack foods and more. The agency’s move is aimed at lowering the average American’s salt consumption by a third, saying people in the United States consume almost 50 percent more sodium than recommended by most experts. Hoping to avoid a repeat of Pope Francis’ visit last year, when many residents abandoned the city, Mayor Jim Kenney urged locals to stick around and be a host during this summer’s Democratic National Convention. “I was down in South Philly today … a lady said, ‘I’m leaving town when this convention comes,” Kenney recounted at a press conference at the Top of the Toast restaurant. “I told her you have to stay. By the time I left her she was convinced she was staying by the end of the conversation.” “We don’t want people to go to the Jersey Shore, we don’t want people to go to the mountains, this
is … going to be history in the making,” he said. Kenney said he hopes residents will help “stay home, show off, meet and greet, be a host and ambassador for our city, and enjoy what’s going on,” as well as helping to sell the city. “It’s really, really important that people stay home, show off Philadelphia, be friendly to the delegates … engage them, go up to them and really sell Philadelphia,” Kenney said. “We need Philadelphia residents and people who work downtown to sell Philadelphia for us, to help us sell the city.” Kenney urged people to keep patronizing local restaurants while the DNC is in town July 25-29. When Pope Francis visited in September 2015 for the World Meeting of Families, many locals deserted the streets of Philadelphia. The most
urgent question for many was how to make a buck, either by renting out their homes on Airbnb or by scalping the limited free tickets to see Pope Francis speak. After the event ended, business owners who invested in staying open complained of light business from the nearly one million pilgrims who
with public service announcements urging locals to stay in Philadelphia. Among the events that locals can enjoy are PoliticalFest, a seven-day series of educational and entertaining events during the convention that are open to the public. DNC organizers also announced Wednesday that there will be a massive gathering of local food trucks before the convention, and what may be the biggest Center City Sips happy hour ever on July 27. “It’s not just about the DNC as much as it’s about the city’s future going forward. This event … will help propel Philadelphia further into the international city that it is,” Kenney said. “It really would be a shame for you and your children to miss this history.”
“We need Philadelphia residents and people who work downtown to sell Philadelphia for us, to help us sell the city.” Kenney
flocked to Philadelphia. In contrast, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) is expected to attract about 50,000 — “less than go to an Eagles game on Sunday,” as Kenney put it. But nonetheless, DNC organizers will start up a publicity campaign titled “You Don’t Want to Miss This” in coming weeks

Cops, children celebrate year’s anti-violence study with pizza Students urged to speak out in neighborhood, City Hall, state capital.

A group of West Philly fourth-graders celebrated
a year’s work studying gun violence that included visits to Harrisburg and City Hall in the best way possible Wednesday — with a pizza party.
During the year, students at Samuel Powel Elementary School heard a talk from Capt. Altovise Love-Craighead of the 16th District through a

partnership with the nonprofit Need in Deed, so she came along with several of her fellow officers to the students’ celebration. “My sister and I came in because we had a brother who was killed in 1997,” said Love-Craighead, a board member of the EMIR (Every Murder Is Real) Healing Center, which offers counseling and other services to family members of crime victims. “We talked about how you can overcome tragedy.” The loss of Love-Craighead’s brother, Emir Greene, led to the founding of the healing center by their mother, Victoria. “Some of them shared their stories of gun violence,” she said of the students. “Some of them had loved ones who were lost to gun violence. It became an opportunity to share
our stories. You can still love them, though, and keep the memories of the person you loved.” “They taught us how to get away from gun violence and how to not get involved,” students wrote on a posterboard that tells the history of their yearlong project, titled “We Are Marching Against Gun Violence.” Some of the students’ first questions were pretty basic, along the lines of “What’s a cop?” recalled Chris Powers, a fourthgrade teacher who, along with fellow teacher Joe Alberti, oversaw the project. “The one thing they can take out of it is they have a voice, regardless of their age,” Powers said. “They can share their message with a lot of people, whether it’s around their neighborhood, at City Hall or in Harrisburg.”

A Western Pennsylvania woman has been charged with assaulting a child and producing child pornography related to a video of herself allegedly abusing a 10-year-old girl, the attorney general’s office announced Wednesday. Carissa Vadala, 19, was arrested on Friday after law enforcement in South Carolina discovered a video which allegedly depicts Vadala sexually abusing the victim. “The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office in Walhalla, South Carolina, contacted the Office of Attorney General regarding evidence recovered

during a separate child pornography investigation,” a press release from the attorney general’s office stated. “The evidence consisted of a video that allegedly showed a woman sexually assaulting the 10-year-old victim.” Further investigation led officials and officers from the South Pymatuning Township Police Department to execute a search warrant at Vadala’s home. “It was determined that Vadala was in fact the woman perpetrating the sexual abuse in the video found by investigators in South Carolina,” the attorney general’s office said. How Vadala encountered the victim was not reported and the criminal complaint was not immediately available from the attorney general’s office. Prosecutors also did not say how Vadala disseminated

the video to someone in South Carolina, or how many people she shared the video with. Vadala is charged with indecent assault of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of a child, production of child pornography, dissemination of child pornography, sexual exploitation of children and related charges. Vadala’s bail was set at $250,000 and she remains in Mercer County prison, according to the attorney general’s office. A preliminary hearing is scheduled in the case for June 8.

Uber driver fatally strikes pedestrian A woman is dead after an Uber driver struck and killed her as she tried to cross the street in North Philadelphia early Wednesday. Police said the unidentified woman, believed to be in her 40s or 50s, had just left a deli on Cecil B. Moore Avenue near 22nd Street, and was crossing
mid-block, when she was hit by a sedan around 1:30 a.m., CBS3 reported. Chief Inspector Scott Small told NBC10 the woman was found laying in the middle of the street, and had suffered “extreme trauma to her head.” Small said the woman had walked into on-
coming traffic. She was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital, where she died shortly thereafter. The driver, operating a 2016 Honda, had reportedly dropped off passengers moments before striking the woman. The driver stayed at the scene, and is not facing charges. ALEXIS SACHDEV

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE
Battling to hold off Sanders, Clinton to assail Trump on foreign policy Clinton is to deliver what her campaign described as a major speech on Thursday in San Diego to underscore what she feels would be the threat posed by Trump to U.S. national security if he is elected president on Nov. 8. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign signaled on Wednesday plans for a big assault on Republican Donald Trump even as she battles to hold off rival Bernie Sanders in California. The effort to define Trump as unfit to be com-
mander-in-chief comes as Clinton faces fierce opposition from Sanders, a senator from Vermont who has insisted on staying in the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination despite Clinton’s nearly insurmountable lead. California’s June 7 primary is shaping up to be pivotal in the Democratic contest, with Clinton holding a 13-point advantage over Sanders, 51 percent to 38 percent, according to the Hoover Institution’s Golden State Poll in the state. Clinton, with 2,312 delegates, needs 71 delegates more to reach the required 2,383 for the Democratic nomination. Sanders has 1,545. At stake in the California primary are 548 delegates that are

awarded proportional to the vote. Five other states also vote on June 7, including New Jersey, which could also turn the tide for Clinton. Despite Clinton’s perceived advantage, there are lingering concerns among some Democrats about possible weakness given the protracted battle
with Sanders, a democratic socialist whose calls for free college tuition have energized young voters. Doug Schoen, a Democratic pollster, wrote in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that California appeared to be trending toward Sanders in recent days. Sanders has been hold-
ing multiple events each day in the state this week. Clinton canceled a New Jersey event to go to California a day earlier than anticipated and is to stay there until June 6. “The inevitability behind Mrs. Clinton’s nomination will be in large measure eviscerated if she loses the June 7 California primary to Bernie Sanders. That could well happen, Schoen wrote. Other Democrats expressed confidence in Clinton’s position and her move to assail Trump on foreign policy. “I think she has to, said Democratic strategist Jim Manley. “Leaving aside California, I think they can’t just ignore Donald Trump in that they should be spending a majority of time focusing on him
instead of Sanders at this point, because based on the math Sanders can’t win. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the election, has faced criticism for a variety of positions on foreign policy, such as his willingness to talk to North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and his idea that Japan and South Korea might need to develop nuclear arsenals. On the other hand, past Republican presidents and current Democratic President Barack Obama have, like Trump, said NATO nations should pay more for their defense to ease the U.S. burden. Trump, however, has declared NATO obsolete and in need of reconfiguring. REUTERS

Rendell: Democrats $10M short for DNC The Democratic Party is falling behind on its $64 million fundraising goal ahead of the party’s national convention in July. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell told BuzzFeed News in an interview last week that the party is about “$9 [million] to $10 million down,” despite source reports claiming that number is closer to $15 million to $16 million. Rendell, who also chairs the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the convention, said “It’s a legitimate gap but we’re touching every base to fill it.” He said the federal government wrote a check in 2012 for $18 million, but didn’t say whether a similar donation will be made this year. He expected an additional $7.75 million from the city of Philadelphia, the amount the city gave

to Republicans in 2000 to host the RNC at what is now the Wells Fargo Center. But given the schoolfunding crisis, the city is not in a position to do that now, Rendell said, the Philadelphia Inquirer
reported. But Rendell blames another person: presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. He explained that corporations often donate equal contributions to both parties ahead of their respective conventions, but skittishness over Trump’s rise has likely reduced contributions to the RNC. According to Rendell, these companies are likely to reduce DNC contributions, as well. “So we’ve had three blows,” Rendell said. “The fed, the city and the Trumpster.” In 2012, when the convention was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, Democrats reportedly fell about $25 million short of their fundraising goal, which the DNC mostly covered. “We’re determined to not let that happen,” Rendell said. The Federal Reserve detected more than 50 cyber breaches between 2011 and 2015, with several incidents described internally as “espionage, according to Fed records. The Fed’s computer systems play a critical role in global banking and hold confidential information on discussions about monetary policy that drives financial markets. The cybersecurity reports, obtained by Reuters through a Freedom of Information Act request, were heavily redacted by Fed officials to keep secret the central bank’s security procedures. The Fed declined to comment, and the redacted records do not say who hacked the bank’s systems or whether they accessed sensitive information or stole money. “Hacking is a major threat to the stability of the financial system. Kansas is latest state to challenge Obama transgender directive Kansas vowed on Wednesday to sue the Obama administration over a directive telling U.S. public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identities. The announcement by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt made the state the 13th to wade into an acrimonious debate about the rights of transgender Americans. It comes a day after a federal appeals court refused to reconsider its ruling that gave a Virginia transgender high school student access to the bathroom of his gender identity. The court’s decision “means our only option is to pursue a more direct challenge to the Obama

administration’s unlawful efforts to unilaterally rewrite Title IX, Schmidt, a Republican, said in a statement. President Barack Obama’s administration on May 13 told U.S. public schools that transgender students must be allowed to use the bathroom of their choice, upsetting Republicans and paving the way for fights over federal funding and legal authority. The letter relied on
an interpretation of Title IX, which protects people from discrimination based on sex in education initiatives that receive federal financial assistance. The letter did not have the force of law but contained an implicit threat that schools that do not abide by the directive could lose federal aid. Schmidt called the directive an attempt to expand federal power. Also on Wednesday, the Kansas Senate passed by 30-to-8 a resolution opposing the Obama administration’s guidance on transgender students’ bathroom use that said state and local officials, and not federal officials, should decide school policy and that the directive threatens students’ privacy and safety. A murder-suicide killed two people at the University of California, Los Angeles on Wednesday, shutting down the campus for two hours as officers in camouflage and tactical gear responded to reports of a shooting. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck confirmed one man shot another and then himself in the engineering building and that police recovered a gun at the scene. “There are no suspects outstanding and no continuing threat to UCLA’s campus, Beck told reporters without offering further details about the victims. Police recovered what may turn out to be a suicide note, Beck said. President Barack Obama was briefed aboard Air Force One and he asked his team to keep him updated, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. After several tense

hours, university officials announced classes would resume on Thursday. At least three city blocks leading into the campus were filled with dozens of emergency vehicles. Officers with rifles, bulletproof vests and helmets surrounded the area. An armored car was parked in the middle of one intersection, and helicopters clattered overhead. UCLA, with more than 43,000 students, is in the Westwood section of Los Angeles and one of the more well-regarded schools in the University of California system, known for its successful sports program. “I couldn’t believe it happened at UCLA, said Sam Zheng, 38, a researcher who was working in the engineering building at the time of the shooting. “I just want to go home. I don’t want to stay here.
Engineering student Aaron Feigelman said he received a text message alerting him to an emergency and entered an adjacent building, where he and five others took refuge for 90 minutes. “We just bolted out of there and ran up to the seventh floor, Feigelman said. “We tied the bathroom door hinges with belts to keep the door closed because there were no locks. And we just waited. It was really scary. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti praised the people of UCLA for “extraordinary grace and calm and lamented the violence at a place of learning. “I am heartbroken by the sight of SWAT teams running down avenues normally filled with students, and angered by the fear that one person with a firearm can inflict on a community, Garcetti said. REUTERS

Megan Fox is taking advice from her fetus We all heed various signs from the universe, whether it’s taking a chance because your horoscope predicts luck or hiding at home and waiting for Mercury to move out of retrograde. Megan Fox gets advice from her unborn child. “I feel like you receive messages from the child if you’re open to it,” the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” star tells Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night show. “This baby wanted me to live somewhere else so we’re moving to a whole different place in Los Angeles because I feel like that’s where this baby wants to be raised.” Before you scoff that a fetus could have a mystical connection to the geography of L.A., Fox isn’t taking

its advice out of pure maternal instinct. “This baby is also telling me that it’s kind of like a Werner Von Braun or Elon Musk, like a supergenius,” she continued. Kimmel, grabbing for any thread of logic to reel back the interview, was reduced to siding with Fox’s two under-5 children on the issue of breastfeeding being weird. Everyone was a winner here.
Does Drake have a new love interest? The “Hotline Bling” rapper was reportedly “getting cozy” at his Memorial Day bash this past weekend with 19-year-old model Hailey Baldwin. On Tuesday night, the pair further fed rumors when they went out for a night on the town in

Sam Claflin has it rough The actor had to rein himself in physically and emotionally as a paralyzed man in “Me Before You. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

“Me Before You may look like a simple romantic drama — a British Nicholas Sparks knockoff about the love between a young working class woman (Emilia Clarke) and a man paralyzed from the neck down (Sam Claflin). But it can get pretty heavy. Claflin feels that way, too. The British actor, best known as Finnick Odair in the “Hunger Games films, had to rein himself in both physically and emotionally, playing a GETTY IMAGES
character whose accident has left him bitter and maybe suicidal, plus at least initially resistant to the young woman who’s become his caretaker. Claflin talks to us about the difficulties of making a romance equal parts dark and sweet. Your character doesn’t start o in a very happy space. He’s let his hair and beard grow, he wears frumpy clothes. But before he cleans up he still almost looks like Lord Byron.
I loved being able to hide under all the baggy clothes and long hair and the beard. The only problem was if one of the hairs went on a little trip across my face it was impossible for me to [swats]. That’s the harsh reality of filming something like this. I struggled mostly with little moments like that, those little things I had to stop myself doing instinctually. I was constantly reminding myself, “Don’t move, don’t move, don’t move. It became very difficult not to use my body. When she was crying I wanted to reach my hand out to comfort her. It was very, very difficult to maintain. He also has to communicate almost entirely through words. He’s a very intelligent and charming man, and he’s very witty. He’s very good with words. You realize we express ourselves every day with our body. But for him it’s all about what he says. He has to think about everything
In “Me Before You,â€? Emilia Clarke plays a young woman hired as caretaker to a man (Sam Clain) who was left paralyzed by an accident. WARNER BROS. PICTURES
before he says it, and he often says things that cut people in half. He’s had to learn to use his words to get his point across quickly. That was one of the big challenges for me, because I’m not great with words. [Laughs] It was that aspect of his character, the intelligent side of him, that I struggled to find. Were there any other things you had to do that were taxing? I lost a lot of weight. It was important to me that he looked weak and frail and not well. I think I lost about 3 ½ stone [49
pounds] in three months. When we were rehearsing I was eating 500 calories and training three times a day. So I had no energy. [Clarke] would walk into the rehearsal room and I’d be curled up on the sofa, shivering, almost crying to myself. It was my decision. I spoke to a few people who were going through something similar and they said everything they went into hospital they lost weight because the food was so bad. So I did the weight loss thing — not to the extremes of Christian Bale of Matthew McConaughey. And
that, too [laughs], was very challenging. This sounds like a rough job. Honestly, not only was this job physically challenging, but mentally and emotionally draining, too. There was one day I came home and I climbed into bed and started crying. My wife was like, “What’s wrong? I was like, “I’m just thinking about Will’s bedtime routine. He’d start his routine at 6 and eventually get into bed at 10. Whereas I just hop into bed. It was little moments like that — things we take for granted.

The rise of female game designers Geek Girl in Hollywood
JENNA BUSCH
legionoeia.com
This weekend, I read a bunch of articles about something that made me really happy. According to a 2015 survey by the International Game Developers Association, we have a lot more female game designers than we used to. In fact, the number has doubled in the past seven years. Women are enrolling in video game design courses in large numbers. Girls are being encouraged to take on coding. Marvel has been hosting contests for female inventors. The number of female gamers has just surpassed the number of male gamers. (Go ahead and make the argument that they’re mobile games. Tell me that as I’m killing it in “Call of Dutyâ€? or raiding in “World of Warcraft.â€?) I’m someone who was personally aected by Gamergate, enduring constant harassment about how “girls don’t play video gamesâ€? and how we would all make games with “unicorns
Don’t think girls can’t hold their own in “World of Warcraft? Think again. BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT
and puppies and shopping.â€? (These are actual quotes from messages I received.) So I ďŹ nd these changes interesting. It made me think about what the Gamergate campaign was trying to accomplish — and how it actually did the opposite. It didn’t scare women away from the gaming community; in fact, it made us more determined to be a part of it. Isn’t it strange that most hate campaigns end up having the opposite eect? Weirdly enough, spewing anger and the
publicity it gets ends up bringing awareness to an issue. Once people start talking, eventually logic prevails. Well, most of the time. It’s like popping a balloon: All the hate rushes out, and you’re forced to look at an issue from all sides. Even people who didn’t know anything about gaming heard about this. Now, Gamergate totally sucked. All of us women (and some men) who spent months dealing with threats and harassment didn’t exactly enjoy it. But look at what’s happening. Over
the past year, I haven’t heard a single person tell me that I “don’t look like a geek,â€? or seem surprised when my boyfriend says I kick his butt in “Mortal Kombat.â€? I’ve talked to little girls who want to design video games, and there are more and more of them at every convention. So to all my gaming girlfriends: Make that game. Make it about sword-ďŹ ghting, military battles, elves and orcs, or unicorns that shop at stores run by puppies. Code on, ladies! Give me more games to play!

With a title like “You Know Who You Are,” you might think Nada Surf’s eighth album is pointing an accusatory finger outward. But its meaning is a gentler look inward. “This record in some ways is about forks in the road and gut feelings,” says frontman Matthew Caws of the band’s March release. “Our language tells us they are automatic: Follow your heart, trust your gut. But what happens if you don’t know what either is saying? I was wrestling with that.” But the title is unlikely to be the first thing fans note about this record. Twenty-five years since hitting it big with

the song “Popular,” Nada Surf has expanded from being a power pop trio to a quartet, as guitarist Doug Gillard joins cofounding members Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot. “As of this album he’s an official fourth member,” Caws confirms. “I’ve known Doug for a long time and always been a big fan of his work. He’s added so much richness and color to the sound.

But it was very natural.” Caws, who moved from his native New York to Cambridge, England, four years ago, also let the album develop naturally, even delaying its release for a year. “My friend Josh,” he says referring to Josh Rosenfeld, the head of Nada Surf’s longtime label, Barsuk Records in Seattle, “heard the initial tracks and said, ‘It’s really good, your fans will like it and we’re happy
to release it.’ Then there was a pregnant pause, and he said, ‘But it won’t change your life’. He said it in a way that was positive and empowering. He said if you drop a couple of songs and write some more you’ll really have something.” And Caws knows, for himself included, it’s something worth having. He continues: “I’m not saying this record will change my life or anyone else’s. But the joy of working on something that’s done, at least already in some kind of formation, and exploring it emotionally was wonderful.”

There’s nothing but love in Eagles quarterbacks’ room, players say Can Carson Wentz and Sam Bradford actually make each other better? EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
Carson Wentz says his fellow Eagles quarterbacks are “great dudes.” Whether the quarterback bromance triangle is as peachy as the quarterbacks themselves say, or it is a front (to misdirect the media after offseason drama), the Eagles quarterbacks’ room seems like a pretty interesting place to be. “So far it’s been great working with Sam [Bradford] and Chase [Daniel],” Wentz told the media during the latest round of Eagles OTAs Tuesday. “We have an awesome quarterbacks’ room, a lot of good discussions about playing, about life …”
Is it love? Or just a front? Not more than a month ago, the quarterback situation in Philadelphia was in disarray. Bradford reportedly walked out of workouts in South Philly and then went back to Oklahoma. Under the advice of his agent,

he demanded a trade and refused to report to work until one had been completed. Bradford, of course, was heated that the Eagles had traded up to No. 2 overall, to eventually draft Wentz out of North Dakota State. Now, in the third week of organized team activities, Bradford is back practicing with the first team as if nothing happened. And the quarterbacks seem to be “bros.” “We have a really good room. I think the biggest thing is reps, but also terminology — learning to speak the same language as our coaches.” On top of the massive playbook, Wentz is also learning how to be a quarterback in the NFL and enjoying every minute of his first exposure to being a professional football player. “So far it’s been great,” Wentz said. “I enjoy my teammates and the locker room. I enjoy this time. Rookie year only happens once.” If you are willing to buy what Bradford is selling, the veteran has turned 180 degrees on the rookie QB. He’s enjoying having him in the room as well. “Carson has been great, he is a great kid,” Bradford said. “He is really talented. It’s been fun working with him, trying to help him and sharing bits of info I have picked up along the way.” Wentz is selling the same message. “We are not out there to get each other, we are out there to help each other get better,” the rookie said.

Potential landing spots for Okafor
Would the Sixers ship off their star center for D’Angelo Russell or Eric Bledsoe? JEFF MCMENAMIN @Jeff_McMenamin
Okafor to the Celtics for pick No. 3 The Boston Celtics are a guard heavy team, featuring Isaiah Thomas (22.2 PPG), Avery Bradley (15.2 PPG), Evan Turner (10.5 PPG) and Marcus Smart (9.1 PPG). What they’re missing is a strong offensive piece in the front court. Centers Jared Sullinger (10.3 PPG) and Kelly Olynyk (10 PPG) are both solid pieces, but don’t have the rising star quality that Okafor possesses. At pick No. 3, options are slim in terms of front court help for the Celtics. They might be willing to ship their pick to the Sixers for Okafor. The Sixers would have their pick at guards like Kris Dunn, Jamal Murray and Buddy Hield, while the Celtics would have a center piece to their already talented backcourt.

forward. Here are three potential landing spots for Okafor with the draft now just three weeks away: Okafor to the Lakers for D’Angelo Russell It’s well known that the Sixers need a point guard who can also score and shoot. On draft night last year, Russell was viewed as the consensus pick for the Sixers at No. 3, before the Lakers swept him up right before them at No. 2. Turmoil continues to surround Russell over a leaked video of teammate Nick Young admitting to cheating on his fiancee Iggy Azalea in March, and now could be a time for the Sixers to make a swap for the guard they once coveted. Russell averaged 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.2 steals last season for the Lakers. Okafor would be a welcomed addition to a thin frontcourt situation in L.A.

sports@metro.us
You can’t go a day in the local and national media landscape without seeing or hearing about Sixers center Jahlil Okafor’s possible involvement in a trade. With rumors of LSU forward Ben Simmons potentially joining the Sixers’ already crowded frontcourt situation, it makes sense for the Sixers to sell the Duke product at his highest value in order to address other areas of the roster. Okafor, who averaged 17.5 points, 7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, is one of the more promising offensive big men in the league today, but questions remain about his defense and fit on the Sixers roster moving

for a short rebuild, after a dreadful 2015-16 campaign. Guards Eric Bledsoe (20.4 points), Brandon Knight (19.6 points) and Devin Booker (13.8) make up a solid backcourt for the young team, but size is currently a very real issue for the team. An aging Tyson Chandler, 33, and underperforming Alex Len (9 PPG), take up nearly all of the frontcourt minutes in Phoenix and they’re in desperate need of an upgrade. The Sixers could look to move Okafor for pick No. 4, where they’ll have their pick of the top guards in the draft, or they could try to make a push for Bledsoe instead. Bledsoe has proved to be a special talent when healthy. A torn meniscus last season limited him to just 41 games. New general Bryan Colangelo has stated his desire to trade for a proven star, Bledsoe might just be the star he’s looking for.
