CALIFORNIA BRUSH FIRE THREATENS HOMES, PROMPTS EVACUATIONS

1

A brush fire outside Los Angeles was threatening thousands of homes and has prompted mandatory evacuation of local residents, authorities said. The 200-acre brush fire in Calabasas, a small Los Angeles County city some 10 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and about halfway between the Malibu and Santa Monica, was reportedly triggered when a vehicle hit a utility pole, downing power lines. Several homes were damaged, fire officials said, and mandatory evacuations were ordered for some Calabasas residents as about 250 firefighters battled to contain the blaze. Helicopters and air tankers were also brought in to make water drops. CNN quoted Calabasas city manager Tony Coroalles as saying that 3,000 homes had been evacuated. REUTERS

The U.S. military released the names of eight of nine soldiers who were killed this week when their vehicle overturned in flood waters in Texas. The soldiers died when their military vehicle flipped over in a flood-swollen creek on Thursday at Fort Hood Army post in central Texas. Three survivors were released from hospital on Friday. Among those killed were Staff Sergeant Miguel Angel Colonvazquez, 38, Specialist Christine Faith Armstrong, 27, Private First Class Brandon Austin Banner, 22, Private First Class Zachery Nathaniel Fuller, 23, and Private Isaac Lee Deleon, 19. Private Eddy Raelaurin Gates, 20, Private Tysheena Lynette James, 21, and Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey, 21, also died in the accident, the circumstances of which remain unknown. REUTERS

SYRIAN AND RUSSIAN AIRCRAFT STEP UP BOMBING OF ALEPPO CITY

3

Nearly 50 air strikes hit rebel-held areas in and around the Syrian city of Aleppo on Sunday in some of the heaviest recent raids by Russian and Syrian government aircraft, residents and a monitoring group said. The group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also said an unidentified war plane had crashed in countryside south of Aleppo, in an area where Islamist rebel fighters are battling the Syrian army and Iranian-backed forces. It had no information on what caused the crash. A civil defense worker said at least 32 people were killed in the rebel-held parts of the city during the air strikes, with 18 bodies pulled from flattened buildings in the Qatrji neighborhood, the worst hit. SEVERE STORMS/ TROPICAL STORM COLIN? A line of severe storms swept through the Northeast Sunday evening with damaging winds, reports of hail and numerous lightning strikes, the deadliest weather phenomena on the planet. Hundreds of severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were posted throughout the Northeast along with marine warnings up and down the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic shorelines. The severe system is now off the coast with a return to beautiful sunfilled tranquil weather conditions Monday. Boston never made it into the warm, unstable

wedge of air, so it remained cool on Sunday with plenty of rain, fog and mist. The hardest hit area Sunday was across Pennsylvania. Next up is a newly formed tropical system. As of Sunday night it was nearing tropical storm status. The tropical system was emerging into the southern Gulf of Mexico and should become the third named storm this season.

I’m anticipating by the time you read this you will be hearing about newly formed Tropical Storm Colin. Colin should pick up speed and most likely strike somewhere near Cedar Keys on the west coast of Florida, north of Clearwater late Monday. Right now, projected intensity is forecast to max out at 60 mph. Long-range models are indicating that Colin should buzz off the Southeast coast late Tuesday and then move out to sea by Wednesday. The good news is the rest of the work week or vacation week (you lucky dog) looks great!

Man gets prison time for giving Amish boys beer, crashing into their buggy A Pennsylvania man was sentenced for one of the “most bizarre” DUI cases ever. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

An intoxicated and armed man who gave Amish teens beer then crashed into their buggy while screaming “Rumspringa” was recently sentenced to prison. Thomas Candler Felts, 25, of Nottingham, was sentenced to a prison sentence of 30 days to six months for the bizarre event last year, the Lancaster County district attorney’s office announced Friday. Felts encountered the Amish teens on Aug. 30 at a Turkey Hill store on Route 272 in Buck. Felts began talking to a group of Amish boys with a horse-drawn buggy about “Rumspringa,” the period of adolescence when the Amish are allowed to pursue activities usually forbidden in their community before choosing to for-

mally enter church as adults or to leave. Prosecutors said Felts gave the boys cans of Yuengling and showed them his pistol before driving away in a red Dodge car. Later, after the Amish group left in their buggy, Felts drove past them and screamed “Rumspringa” before suddenly stopping his vehicle, causing the buggy to crash into the car. Felts then asked the Amish where his gun was, and they said they did not know. No injuries were reported. After the crash, Felts’ blood-alcohol level tested at .126 percent, far above the legal limit for drivers of .08 percent. Felts was convicted of DUI and furnishing alcohol to minors. “Assistant District Attorney Travis S. Anderson told the judge it was one of the most ‘bizarre’ DUI cases he’s ever seen,” the Lancaster County DA’s office said. Felts’ sentence was partly based on his having no prior record, the DA’s office said.

Levittown pharmacist guns down robber in Halloween mask

A masked robber was shot and killed at this pharmacy. CHAD PRADELLI VIA TWITTER

One man is dead and another is in custody after a failed robbery ended with a Levittown pharmacy owner firing nearly a dozen shots at a would-be thief while his getaway driver waited in the parking, unaware of the mayhem. Around 10 a.m. on

Friday, a shotgun-toting man in a Halloween mask entered the Pennsbury Pharmacy on New Falls Road in Levittown, police told NBC10. A driver waited in a getaway van outside. “[The pharmacy owner] has a good camera system, so he

actually saw the subject come into the store with the shotgun,” Falls Township Police Lt. Henry Ward told 6ABC. “He was prepared for the armed intruder.” Zip ties were found by the masked dead man, indicating that he intended to tie up the

pharmacy’s staff during the robbery, 6ABC added. His accomplice in a minivan backed up to the building waited outside, unaware of the shooting. Police told NBC10 that the van had been reported stolen in New Jersey. JASON NUCKOLLS

Yvonne Montgomery PPD

Cops: Lawyer tossed coffee, punched woman outside Center City Starbucks A Philadelphia lawyer has been identified as the woman accused of throwing coffee and punches at another woman outside a Center City Starbucks in April. Yvonne Montgomery, 47, turned herself in to police on May 24, about a month after cops released video of the sidewalk assault. Montgomery works at the Tucker Law Group in Center City, Philly. com reported. According to police, Montgomery threw a coffee stirrer at a 54-year-old woman before the two went outside and got into another altercation.

That’s when Montgomery allegedly tossed the steaming hot coffee in the woman’s face, then punched her in the face and body and pulled her hair. Police said a witness separated the two women, and Montgomery fled. The victim suffered minor injuries. It was not clear what sparked the dispute. Montgomery was charged with simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct by engaging in fighting, according to police. She was released on her own recognizance last month. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

American Muslims remember Ali as hero for their faith From the turmoil of civil rights and black Muslim movements of the 1960s to the darkest days after Sept. 11, 2001, Ali was a hero that U.S. Muslims could share with part of the American mainstream.

Muhammad Ali GETTY IMAGES

The death of Muhammad Ali cost American Muslims perhaps their greatest hero, a goodwill ambassador for Islam in a country where their minority faith is widely misunderstand and mistrusted. Muslims remembered Ali for many familiar reasons, hailing him as a champion of social justice, a lifelong supporter of charitable works and an opponent of the U.S. war in Vietnam. Moreover, they said, he was a Muslim that a largely Christian country came to admire, even if Ali shocked and scared much of U.S. society after he joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name from Cassius Clay in 1964. “When we look at the history of the African-

American community, one important factor in popularizing Islam in America is Muhammad Ali,” Warith Deen Mohammed II, son of former Nation of Islam leader, said. With some 3.3 million adherents in the United States, Muslims make up about 1 percent of the population, largely immigrants and African-Americans who have embraced the religion. Although they have integrated into society better than some of their brethren in Europe, American Muslims face hardships even as the United States grows demographically less white and less Christian. Since 2001, they have suffered backlash from those Americans who

equate all Muslims with those who have attacked civilians out of some jihadist cause. Decades before, black Muslim leaders such as Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X rattled the white establishment as religious and ethnic minorities who demanded equality for their people. Elijah Mohammad preached a version that denounced white oppression and opposed integration of the races. Ali came to be widely revered, but there was a time when he was rejected, mostly by whites by also by some black leaders for his bold statements against white supremacy and for his refusal to embrace the model epitomized by Martin Luther King, a Christian. With a June Federal Reserve interest rate hike likely off the table following Friday’s dismal jobs data, U.S. equity investors may shift their focus again to whether the economy is losing too much steam to allow stocks to advance. Investors will comb economic data over the next few weeks to see if the weak payrolls report reflected a wider trend in the U.S. economy or was an outlier. A first hint of the central bank’s view of that could come Monday with a speech on the economic outlook by Fed Chair Janet Yellen. The fresh economic worries could help keep the market mired below record highs reached in May 2015, even though the Standard & Poor’s 500 index notched a third straight months of gains this May and most sectors are up since the start of the year. “The broader question is whether the economy is gaining the kind of momentum and traction that we need for a market that has been looking toward new highs,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey. “No one is out to suggest the economy is doing a major turnaround because of this number, but we now need to see a clutch of data that suggests that this is a one-off,” she said. It may take a few

weeks to get a better picture of the economic outlook, with the economic and earnings calendars light for next week. The Fed meets the following week, which will also bring data on retail sales and producer prices. Wall Street’s top banks now unanimously expect the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged this month, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.

While investors and company executives have worried that higher rates will dampen spending, now a weak economy is considered a bigger risk for the market. S&P 500 earnings, which fell 5 percent in the first quarter from a year ago in their third straight quarterly decline, are still expected to pick up in the second half of the year. REUTERS

GETTING THE SHAKES The primaries are rattling to a close, Trump takes a licking and the White House has an honesty issue. Here are my three things to watch this week in politics. CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN’ Make no mistake: Hillary Clinton is going over the edge this week. With a caucus in North Dakota and primaries in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, she is virtually certain to ďŹ nally have enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination. But the California vote could still be a problem. Bernie “Relentlessâ€? Sanders has been hounding her in the Golden State, and if he beats or even ties her on Tuesday — you can bet his fans will howl even louder about her alleged weaknesses as a candidate. CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE Last week was all squealing tires and twisted metal for Republican contender Donald Trump as he skidded between blistering reports about his university, his fundraising for vets and his comments about a judge’s Mexican heritage. Of course the billionaire from New York is acting like it’s nothing, but keep an eye on the pundits and polls to

see if he has been hurt. You can bet Clinton will. Her ďŹ erce attacks

recently produced some of her best headlines yet, and if she sees Trump bloodied it will be like Shark Week has come early. GETTING GLITCHY WITH IT You know your department has as problem when even the boss is calling someone’s action “stupid and clumsy and inappropriate, but that’s what Secretary of State John Kerry said. His biting words appeared in the wake of reports the State Department purposely edited out part of a news conference before posting it online, then — when caught — tried to claim it was an electronic glitch. The deleted portion was about the administration misleading the public over secret talks with Iran. Anyway, the House Oversight Committee wants State to explain who ordered the erasure by mid-week. Odds of them getting that answer? Let me put it this way — I suspect the Cavaliers have a better chance of hoisting the NBA trophy.

Senior Republicans criticize Donald Trump’s remarks on Hispanic judge Trump has accused U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of harboring a bias against him in lawsuits involving fraud allegations against Trump University. Senior Republicans distanced themselves on Sunday from Donald Trump’s comments about a Mexican-American judge, saying they were worried that the tone of his presidential campaign could enrage Latinos, who are a growing U.S. voting bloc. The presumptive Republican nominee has suggested U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s MexicanAmerican heritage had influenced the judge’s opinion because of Trump’s campaign pledge to build

a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he “couldn’t disagree more” with Trump’s comments about the judge. “I am concerned about the Hispanic vote. America is changing,” McConnell told “Meet The Press.” “I think it’s a big mistake for our party to write off Latino Americans. I am concerned about that and I hope he will change his direction on that.” Democrats have accused Trump of racially tinged rhetoric about Latinos, including his description of Mexican immigrants as “criminals and rapists” in the speech he gave a year ago launching his campaign. Such rhetoric has exacerbated friction between Trump and Republican party leaders such as Mc-

Connell and House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan. For the past few years, the party has been trying to broaden its appeal with Latino voters and senior Republicans are concerned that Trump’s comments could cost the party votes, not only in the presidential race but in congressional races as well. Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has been mentioned as a possible running mate to Trump, called Trump’s comments about the judge “inexcusable.” REUTERS

Mexican state elections test ruling party’s 2018 hopes Mexican regional elections pose a major test for the ruling party´s hopes of retaining the presidency in 2018 as discontent over corruption and impunity fuels support for the antiestablishment message of a resurgent leftist firebrand. Voters across Mexico choose new governors in a dozen of the country´s 31 states, including bastions of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) at risk of falling to the opposition after more than 80 years of one-party rule. Election booths opened early on Sunday in oil-rich Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico, the country’s third most-populous region, which the PRI has ruled since the party’s inception in the late 1920s. Years of gang violence, mounting debts and allegations of corruption have turned Veracruz into a liability for Pena Nieto,

President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto GETTY IMAGES

and only thanks to splits in the opposition does the centrist PRI look to have any hope of holding onto the state. Polls in Veracruz show the PRI in a very tight race with Cuitlahuac Garcia, the candidate of the new leftist party of two-time presidential runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, as well as a joint ticket by the main center-right and centerleft opposition parties. Election observers

are also on the lookout for any signs of fraud or violence around voting, a common occurrence in Mexico’s rough and tumble campaigns. Party representatives often go door to door during elections with money and small gifts to encourage people to vote for their candidates. “Corruption is what’s done the most damage to Veracruz, and what’s done the most damage to Mexico, Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday as he campaigned in the northern state of Sinaloa. Accused by critics of presiding over rampant impunity and misuse of public funds, Veracruz governor Javier Duarte has become such a lightning rod for anger over the political class that the PRI candidate to succeed him said last year that he was “embarrassed to be in the same party as the 42-year-old. Demi & Wilmer are ‘better as best friends’ Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama have decided to give their hearts a break. The “Cool for the Summer” singer, 23, and “That ’70s Show” star, 36, announced on Instagram late Friday night that they’ve broken up. “After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship,” Lovato writes. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends.” She signed the letter “with only love,” which pretty much sums up the pair’s relation-

Taylor Swift sings through her heartache Nobody loves love like Taylor Swift. Just days after Swift, 26, broke up with DJ Calvin Harris after a 15-month romance, she surprised a couple in New Jersey at their wedding reception. The pair were married in a hospital because the groom’s mother was sick, US Weekly reports. He’s a big fan of Swift’s, so his sister invited the singer to

night, when the duo were named Guys of the Decade at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards. Perez Hilton reports that Affleck knows just how lucky he is. “I did ‘Gigli’ and Matt did that Liberace movie and all of a sudden it all seemed out of reach,” he said.

“Then I did [‘Batman v Superman’] and all of a sudden it was back in reach again.” Um, you do know everyone hated that one too, right? Maybe not though — Matt’s probably hiding all the bad press from him. We should all be so lucky.

their after-party, where she sang “Blank Space” and played her own accompaniment on a keyboard. Swift and Harris, 32, called off their relationship last week reportedly because she wanted marriage and a family, and he decided he’d rather become another cautionary tale in her latest breakup ballad. Looking forward to that new single, girl.

At least there’s one celebrity relationship that didn’t end last week. Model Gigi Hadid, 21, and former One Direction member Zayn Malik, 23, have not split up despite rumors they were dunzo after nearly seven months of dating, Just Jared Jr. reports. “Gigi and Zayn are still together,” according to a source close to the couple. “The break-up reports are

completely false.” The original report of the breakup came Thursday night from E!, whose own anonymous source blamed drama at Hadid’s birthday party back in April for leading to the split. “Zayn and Gigi did break up, but they can likely get back together tomorrow,” that source claimed. So until it’s Instagram official, let’s everyone calm down.

Summer has oďŹƒcially arrived, which means your next vacation may be on the agenda — and there’s no better way to explore a new place like a local and with a local. Whether you’re in Barcelona solo, hanging out in the Hamptons with your crew or visiting family in Atlanta, swiping right on vacation can bring spontaneity. My clients ďŹ nd that swiping right on vacation — the one place when a relationship isn’t likely to happen — can help them ďŹ nd the fun in dating again when they are looking for a serious relationship and aren’t having luck otherwise. It can shift your perspective around what’s possible in your dating life. So here’s my guide to using dating apps while you’re traveling.

BITE TONIGHT Bedbugs are on the rise. Call and ask about our service.

What to say Once you’ve started swiping, it’s important to be up front with your travel status. Not only will you avoid setting unrealistic expectations, but you’ll also begin attracting those who are looking for an adventure. And let’s face it, when you’re on vacation, fun should be at the top of your checklist! Try something like, “Visiting for the weekend. dough, Tinder Plus includes Tinder Passport, which allows you to swipe on matches in another city, message them and plan dates in your destination before you land. If you’re traveling internationally, try downloading Badoo, Happn, Tinder or OkCupid since they have larger memberships abroad than some other apps. But if you’re more comfortable with the platform you already have downloaded, it will likely work in any city stateside. Your GPS should update when you land in a new locale.

Why not swipe right while on vacation?

No matter what you do with your match, stay safe. Don’t tell someone your hotel name or accept a ride from them to the date. As for what you do, go beyond the standby “drinks date. Andy Samberg feels bad for Bieber The Lonely Island boys talk about sending up the music industry with “Popstar.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Technically, Andy Samberg is a musician. He’s even technically part of a hit-making band. Fifteen years ago the “Saturday Night Live” alum formed the Lonely Island with lifelong friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, whose bread and butter are song parodies: “Lazy Sunday,” “D— in a Box” and the jokey tunes that dot their second feature film, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.” Samberg’s also married to an actual serious musician, Joanna Newsom. Surely they’ve never thought about combining their talents into some strange hybrid? “Her fanbase would

probably be disappointed in that — rightfully,” Samberg, now 37, quips. “As fans of her work I’d say we’d also be disappointed,” Taccone adds. The three are here to speak about “Popstar,” their follow-up to 2007’ss “Hot Rod.” They ey play a broken-up -up rap boy band — part Beastie Boys, oys, part Backstreet eet Boys. And miraculously they never had to have an uncomfortable conversation with Mariah Carey, whose own attempt at crossing into movies was the notorious “Glitter.” Not that she probably fretted that much over it, thinks Samberg. “I think her recordbreaking number of No. 1 hits maybe gave her solace,” he jokes.

Indoor skydiving in King of Prussia

You no longer need a plane to experience the thrill of free-fall. ALBERT LEE @MetroPhilly

letters@metro.us

Jumping out of a plane is so passÊ ... OK, maybe not! But it’s become a lot easier to experience the adrenaline rush of skydiving in the Delaware Valley with the opening of iFLY in King of Prussia. Since April, this Austin, Texas, chain has taken more than 3,100 highfliers into the world of indoor skydiving. That’s right — no plane. No tandem. No parachute. Step into their wind tunnel and away you go! Appropriate for ages 3 to 103, it’s never

too early or too late to cross skydiving off one’s bucket list. Unsurprisingly, seniors are among the biggest fans. Each session is about two hours long and training is relatively painless. You’re taught to always keep your chin up, relax your legs and keep your hands in a diamond pose right about eye level. Of course, it’s always much easier said than done when all communication inside of the tunnel is done through hand signals. So remember to relax when the instructor flashes the hang 10 sign. The one big advantage of choosing iFLY over traditional skydiving is the amount of time spent in free-fall. What is free-fall, you ask? It’s defined as your active descent before pulling the parachute which typically lasts only 30 to 40 seconds. iFLY works to keep you in the air for two minutes. What may seem like a blink of eye is certainly a head spinner, both literally and figuratively. Just remember to keep your mouth closed to avoid drooling all over yourself.

The opening tap at the Fillmore on Friday evening officially launched Philly Beer Week, now

in its ninth year. Every day until to June 12, our fair city will celebrate all things beer and beer culture, through food pairing dinners, races, games and more. So just how many events are on tap this time around? Executive Director Kristine Kennedy says she “doesn’t have an official count

yet but last year saw more than 1,000 events at 180 venues in the Philadelphia region. “People add events up to the bitter end, says Kennedy. “They can be as simple as a tap takeover or a meet-thebrewer event. A good place to begin your exploration is Spruce Street Harbor Park, which is the site

of Philly Beer Week’s Official Beer Garden. The site will feature themed events daily, including a Women in Beer event Wednesday, swan-boat races Thursday and Art Star craft bazaar Friday and Saturday. Yes, we did say swan boat races. Kennedy explains: “Four breweries will be decorating swan

THINGS TO DO brews. Board President William Reed says some of his favorite aspects of Philly Beer Week are related to the many collaborations between breweries as well as breweries and bars. “This is the eighth time I’ve done a collaboration with Sly Fox at the Standard Tap, which I own, he says. “This year we concocted the Standard Saison — It’s very hoppy. Reed is also excited about the official European Collaboration Beer, which teams up a local brewer, a

This year, Yards Brewer Tom Kehoe and raffle winner Adam Anderson flew to the Netherlands to work with Dutch brewers DeMolen to produce a Porter with 9.5% alcohol content. The result: A brew with “a salty Belgian licorice added to it. It’s so good,â€? says Reed. HOW TO GET AHEAD

Tutors on demand? There’s an app for that Smart Alec creates a customized teaching experience. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa

alizah.salario@metro.us

You can stream television, order food and request a private car on demand — so why not a tutor? That’s the thinking behind Smart Alec, an app that matches private tutors and students with the click of a button — er, the swipe of a finger. Smart Alec — the name draws inspiration from one of the most illustrious student-mentor pairings, Alexander the Great and Aristotle — matches students seeking help in math, science, the humanities and test prep using a unique algorithm that filters for compatible personality types and

teaching styles. Students and parents can scroll through tutor profiles, which display a tutor’s availability, video bio and hourly rate. Depending on tutor experience and subject matter, hourly rates range from $75-$200. Creator Nathan Kane came up with the idea for Smart Alec after seeing the limitations inherent in tutoring companies — including the one he started and formerly ran, Practice Perfect. “The vast majority of the tutoring companies out there are taking huge finder’s fees,” says Kane. “A tutor will be doing 99 percent of the work, and they’ll only be making about 2535 percent of what the parent is actually paying. Really, the tutoring companies are capturing a huge amount of the money that people

are spending on private education.” In essence, Smart Alec takes out the middle man. The app also helps students and tutors avoid some of the other hurdles tutoring companies face, like trying to match a limited number of tutors with students who have busy schedules. It also cuts out the need for phone calls, which Kane says many students find “antiquated.” By creating an app, Kane says he hopes “students can take control of the process, and be proactive.” “Our goal is not just to match students to tutors, but also students to students, so we can actually create the ideal small group class,” says Kane, who notes that they hope to add group classes down the line. The 50 tutors on Smart Alec’s roster are

cherry-picked for their strong education credentials and previous tutoring or teaching experience. The company hires about 4 percent of its applicants, says Kane. “The best tutors are also empathic,” says Kane. “Often a student, especially in high school, is so stressed out and has so much going on that they just need someone to kind of be there, and listen. The way you teach a lesson on one day might be different than the way you teach it on another day, because they’ll be in a different mental and emotional state. That’s something that’s just as important as subject matter expertise.” Like the company’s namesake, Smart Alec wants to “elevate” the tutoring process and leave both students and tutors feeling fulfilled.

Howard irate after Phillies fan throws bottle at him The slumping slugger had some choice words for the yet unidentified man who tried to hit him with a bottle this weekend. KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us

Ryan Howard entered as a pinch-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning on Saturday. He hit a grounder, was thrown out at first base and that was that. Until a fan along the first-base sideline decided to toss a Bud Light Lime bottle at Howard. The Phillies had just dropped their 14th game in 16 contests since May

27, and Howard knows Tommy Joseph’s playing time will be increasing by the week. There was already enough frustration in the first baseman; having a fan toss something at him set him off. “I just turned around and saw it down by my feet, Howard said. “I don’t play that s—. To me, that’s crossing the line and it becomes a security issue. That stuff infuriates me. If you want to yell out what you want to yell out, that’s fine. But when you start throwing stuff, the minute it gets physical it gets personal. That’s the way I look at it. Colton Murray, who shares a stall right by Howard, wasn’t even aware the situation happened since he was all the way out in the bullpen. After Howard finished speaking with reporters,

“There should be accountability. I felt that for the longest time. Ryan Howard, on the actions of a Philadelphia fan Saturday

he quickly went up to him and said, “Wait, that really happened? before shaking his head in disgust. It’s something that no professional athlete — or human being — should ever have to go through. The critics have been out in full force on Howard the past few seasons, but he knows that’s because of his play on the field, not about the person he is. So when a fan decides to physically take their frustrations out on him, that’s when it crosses the line. “If somebody throws, we’re just supposed to sit there and wear it? Howard said. “Nah, man. We’re human beings, first. People get it twisted. They see the baseball stuff, they don’t see you as a human being. This is the first time something like this has ever happened to Howard. It certainly came as a surprise.

“We have to be held to a high standard, the fans should have to be held at a high standard, Howard said. “It’s tough enough playing the game, and you have stupid people like that that are going to throw stuff. It’s not right. “It’s OK for him to throw a bottle and go home on his merry way? That s— don’t work. Howard is in the midst of a season that has seen him bat .151 and batting 1-for-15 in his last seven games entering Sunday. There’s no reason he, or anyone on this team or any of the other 29 clubs, should have to experience something like that. There have not been any repercussions yet, but Howard hopes someone is held accountable for the action. A photo has surfaced of the alleged bottle-thrower, and according to sources, a video of the incident has been turned over to the police from the Phillies.

perhighway as a whole. Especially for the 76ers, the talk seems to be getting louder since they own the picks 1, 24, and 26 in the first round and have tradeable assets such as Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor. By now, Noel’s and Okafor’s names have been heard going to a variety of teams. Until something officially happens, it’s just that — talk. Is the process intriguing? Of course. The 10-win Sixers need a major boost of adrenaline under new management led by Bryan Colangelo. If they can ultimately improve by adding pieces through trades, then they should proceed. Would Atlanta Hawks guard Jeff Teague, a solid 3-point shooter, make sense in some type of trade for Noel? Would the No. 2 or No. 3 overall pick for Okafor work for the Sixers? Right now, it’s all conjecture. There are so many rumors, so let’s tackle these in particular. Grabbing Teague in a package for Noel could be productive, but the Sam Hinkie supporters would likely be against the move. The three-year agonizing process of losing produced Noel in a deal for Jrue Holiday. Giving up so early on Noel would be difficult. On the flip side, Teague is a 28-yearold proven veteran point guard who would help immediately. In Okafor’s case, trading the young big man for the No. 3 overall se-

lection doesn’t appear to make a whole lot of sense since the draft is considered a one-two punch of Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram. But shipping Okafor to the Los Angeles Lakers for the No. 2 overall pick? Well, that has to be considered. Can you imagine the Sixers adding Simmons and Ingram? It’s a nice picture. Colangelo has addressed the rumors. In one particular interview, he was asked about the Sixers’ intentions. “There’s been a lot of that [rumors] floating around,” Colangelo told Bleacher Report. “I know that some people like to poison the well. We’ve got good relationships with the agent, we’ve got good relationships with the family because [coach] Brett [Brown] has known Ben Simmons’ father for years. We also know Brandon Ingram’s people very well, whether it’s his agent or obviously his college coach. I really have not been concerned about what I hear and read. I also don’t like to take speculation and rumor and give it any kind of truth or validate it in any way.” They’ll also have a chance to hear trade talk when the phone rings on a daily basis. As the draft inches closer, the phone calls will certainly increase. The Sixers need to get better and they have pieces to pull off trades. Whether any of it happens is a guessing game. But it’s sure going to be fun to watch as the days and weeks unfold.
