ZUCKERBERG’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS RESTORED AFTER HACK
1
Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s Twitter and Pinterest accounts have been resecured, a spokesman from the social media platform said on Monday, responding to questions about weekend media reports that the founder’s sites had been hacked. Zuckerberg’s Twitter and Pinterest accounts were compromised over the weekend, according to a report on Sunday from technology news website VentureBeat. Those accounts have since been “re-secured using best practices,” a Facebook spokesman told Reuters, adding, “no Facebook systems or accounts were accessed.” REUTERS
NO CHARGES AGAINST MOM IN ZOO GORILLA TRAGEDY
2
Criminal charges will not be filed against the mother of a three-year-old boy who crawled into the Cincinnati Zoo’s gorilla exhibit last month, leading zoo authorities to shoot the endangered animal dead, a prosecutor said Monday. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the mother was attending to the three other children with her when her son “just scampered off ” on May 28. The boy had crawled through a barrier and fell 12 feet into a moat within the enclosure, when the 17-year-old gorilla grabbed the boy. Though some have called for child endangerment charges against the mom, Michelle Gregg, Deters said she was not being reckless and didn’t put her son at risk intentionally, Time magazine reports. Deters said Gregg had her back turned when the 3-year-old ran off. ALEXIS SACHDEV
BALTIMORE COP CHARGED IN FREDDIE GRAY DEATH CHOOSES BENCH TRIAL
3
A Baltimore police officer charged with murder in the 2015 death of black detainee Freddie Gray waived a jury trial on Monday and will be tried by a Maryland judge instead. Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., 46, is the third officer to face trial for Gray’s death and drove the police van in which Gray broke his neck. His death in April 2015 triggered protests and rioting and fueled a U.S. debate on police treatment of minorities. Prosecutors are still looking for a conviction in the high-profile case, with two trials ending in a mistrial and an acquittal. Goodson’s last-minute decision to have Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams decide the case came during a pretrial hearing on motions. The trial begins on Thursday morning. REUTERS

Rush Hour Challenge proves the race is not always to the swift Electric bike wins fourth annual “competition” that promotes coexistence in transportation. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
In a battle pitting commuting option against commuting option, the electric bicycle has emerged victorious. Seven commuters squared off after work Monday for the fourth installment of Boston’s Rush Hour Challenge (previously known as the Rush Hour Race), traveling from MassDOT headquarters in downtown Boston to Davis Square in Somerville. Three rode bikes (the electric bike, a Hubway, and a good old-fashioned commuter bicycle), one took the train, one walked, one ran, and one got behind the wheel of a car. But it was Gabriela Ziritt Hauser who got to the finish line first, completing the challenge in 28 minutes. “The ride went pretty
good, I think,” said Hauser, who’s been riding a souped-up cycle for three years on her commute to South Boston from Brighton. It’s her preferred form of transportation, she said, because it’s much quicker than taking the T. And because she doesn’t have to pedal much, she doesn’t have to worry about showing up to the office covered with sweat. But never mind who won, because that’s beside the point. “We actually took the word ‘race’ out on purpose, because we want to highlight more the challenge of getting around the city,” said Stacy Thompson, deputy director of the LivableStreets Alliance, an organization that advocates for policies that favor bikers and pedestrians as well as cars. That’s because no matter who got to the finish line at a Davis barbecue joint first, organizers hope that it’s Boston that can win in the long term. Sure, it’s a competition, but it’s only tongue in cheek. There’s already enough animosity on the road to go around. “The ultimate message
is that it’s time for us to tear down the invisible barriers between modes in municipalities. Oftentimes there’s this really unhealthy conversation that bikes are against drivers, or pitting pedestrians against drivers,” Thompson said. “What we’re trying to say is everyone is just trying to get around, and if we prioritize people’s needs to move around metro Boston, and we work to make our streets function better regardless of the modes people are using, we’re all going to be happier.” In past races, cyclists won twice and a passenger on the MBTA won once. A lot has changed since the first rush hour faceoff in 2012, Thompson
said. Alternatives to cars have gained in popularity, buzzwords like multimodal transit and transitoriented development have entered the public sphere. Planning efforts are underway, like Go Boston 2030, which focuses on the future of transportation in Boston, or Focus40, which focuses on drafting a capital plan for the MBTA. “We are at, I think, an inflection point,” Thompson said. “So many groups are stepping back and saying, ‘What do we want our cities to be, and how are people going to get around five years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now?’ They’re realizing that, today, our streets kind of aren’t working for anyone.”

Five people injured in Quincy road rage brawl A large brawl broke out Sunday at a Quincy intersection as passengers in two cars began fighting after they were involved in a collision. On Sunday morning at the corner of Farrington Street and Elmwood Avenue, two cars collided, leading to all of their occupants exiting the vehicles and fighting in the street, CBS Boston reported. Eight people ultimately were involved in the street fight, one of whom was a pregnant woman, CBS Boston stated. A nearby resident who saw the incident said that all those involved lived in the neighborhood. “I went outside, and I think there was eight of them total in the street throwing punches at each other. One guy had a bloody nose,” resident Keith Anderson told

lieved that speeding and the problem of people running stop signs in the neighborhood may have contributed to this incident, WHDH added. “I can understand — I get annoyed at how people drive, but you don’t have to be punching people over stuff like that,” Anderson was quoted by WHDH. JASON NUCKOLLS

The history buffs of the future were treated to a treasure trove of relics and lessons from the past on Monday, as nearly a thousand elementary school students converged on Boston Common for the seventh-annual Making History day. Kids got to play Colonial-era games, meet costumed soldiers transported into the future, stick their heads through a stockade, and even spend some face-time

Teen sentenced to 25 years for 2014 prom-day slaying A Connecticut teenager was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday for stabbing a female classmate to death in a school hallway hours before their 2014 junior prom. Christopher Plaskon, 19, pleaded no contest in March to charges that he killed 16-yearold Maren Sanchez, the junior class president and a National Honor Society student, at Milford’s Jonathan Law High School in April 2014. Connecticut Superior Court Judge John Ronan sentenced him in a Monday morning hearing, a court official confirmed. Police said Plaskon attacked Sanchez in a

Kanye cancels impromptu show, causes light rioting
Nick Cannon wants a chance at Eminem Can Nick Cannon take Eminem? Last week, Cannon issued an open rap challenge to anyone willing to shell out $100,000 as the prize. “Yo tell your favorite rapper I got a 100k to battle them June 25th at the BET EXPERIENCE! #WildStyle Who should I get? These rappers scared!” he tweeted. Despite reaching out to the likes of Tyga and the members of Slaughterhouse, Cannon is still on the lookout for a worthy opponent, he told U.K. radio host Tim Westwood. When Westwood expressed doubts that Cannon could win against Eminem, Cannon responded, “At least tell him to show up to the match. I can’t win by default.”

Why does Kanye have the world’s biggest ego? Maybe because we keep fanning it. In the wee hours of Sunday night/Monday morning, the musical god — who was supposed to headline New York’s Governors Ball, which was abruptly canceled due to a storm — announced he’d do an impromptu supersecret show at 2 a.m. But the power of Kanye was too
great: Despite it being a school night, a few thousand fans quickly flocked to Webster Hall in the East Village, shutting down the block. As quickly as he had announced the show, West called it off, owing to too much demand (or rather a venue that couldn’t contain all his followers). At least everyone took the news well: They partied a bit in the street, partook

in some light vandalism and then moved to the Trump SoHo hotel, where he was alleged to have been staying. Kim Kardashian herself took to Instagram, snapping a picture of the throngs. “Kanye wished he could have performed last night and really tried so hard but it was ultimately out of his control!” she wrote. “Promise he will make up this pop up show!”
This call out could add fuel to a years-long fire that began back in 2009, when Mariah Carey — who was married to Cannon at the time — came out with a song called “Obsessed.” The media speculated that the song was about Eminem, who claimed the two were once in a relationship.
Eminem responded with a brutal diss track called “The Warning,” which prompted Cannon to fire back with a diss track of his own. If Eminem accepts Cannon’s challenge, someone should tell both of them that the early 2000s called — they want their impromptu rap battles back.

Slurping on bone broth Read about the latest dish in the Paleo diet craze. CHLOE TSANG @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
Move over, chicken noodle soup — there’s a newer, trendier health food in town. In today’s increasingly healthconscious world, greasy burgers and fries just don’t cut it. Nowadays, the quest for nutritional options has spurred the latest food trends, from green juices and acai bowls to the Mediterranean diet and “GF” (gluten-free) regimens. What are people ordering now? Bone broth. Bone broth, which has gained popularity in the last year, is made by simmering animal bones with vinegar and various vegetables and herbs. It may sound gross, but don’t let the name throw you off. “If you explain that it’s sort of like a chicken stock that’s made with better quality ingredients and cooked for a much longer time, then people start to understand what it really is,” says Jordan Feldman, who co-founded
wellbeing MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY
Springbone Kitchen, a restaurant in New York City that focuses its menu on the dish. “Nobody has tasted it and said, ‘This is disgusting,’” he explains. “As soon as you take a taste, it’s a familiar flavor.” Bone broth is hailed as a panacea for all kinds of ailments, including joint aches, sore muscles and digestive woes. It even boasts anti-aging properties — bone broth’s allstar ingredient is collagen, a protein that’s supposed to reduce wrinkles and get rid of cellulite. “The claim is that, by drinking the broth, you get the collagen attached to the bones and ligaments in it,” says Lisa Sasson, clinical associate professor of nutrition at NYU Steinhardt. But the science behind this doesn’t necessarily add up, she continues. “It’s not like we consume collagen and it becomes collagen in our body; it’s broken down into amino acids that the body is going to use wherever it needs building blocks or protein.” Though bone broth might not lead straight to the fountain of youth, Sasson adds that the minerals and electrolytes in it still provide nutritional value. “It’s healthy,” she says.
Where to find it Savenor’s, savenorsmarket. com, 92 Kirkland St. Savenor’s in Cambridge sells a slew of premade bone broths, made with animal bones broken down in-house.
“It’s just not magical.” In fact, Feldman decided to open Springbone Kitchen after discovering bone broth’s health benefits for himself. After injuring his knee, he came across an article about the dish. “I was kind of skeptical, but I gave it a try,” he says. “Within a couple weeks, my knee honestly started getting a whole lot better. I was kind of sold from that point forward.” You can decide on bone broth’s merits for yourself by making a batch. We’ve got you covered with a recipe on our site.

Not much optimism in Sox bullpen The starting staff should be fine but Boston’s relief arms are still worrisome. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
While the Red Sox are still at the top of the AL East standings, it doesn’t mean the team can be content. The Red Sox have one of the best offenses in baseball, but pitching is another story. Going into play Monday, the Sox have a team ERA of 4.37, which is good for 22nd in baseball. As a starting rotation they sit at 4.67, 21st in the league and 3.80 as a bullpen, which is 13th, but the bullpen still might be more of a concern. Although the rotation has struggled, there is optimism that it can get better. David Price has an ERA of 4.88, but he’s been much better of late and is
lowering it start-by-start. The team is currently going with a four-man rotation until June 18, and it then seems likely that Clay Buchholz will return and Joe Kelly will be moved to the bullpen. This gives the Red Sox a rotation of Price, Buchholz, Rick Porcello, Steven Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez. With what these pitchers are capable of doing, this gives some reason for optimism. The bullpen is a different story, especially in front of closer Craig Kimbrel. Carson Smith has been lost for the season because of Tommy John surgery. Koji Uehara hasn’t looked anything like himself, as he has a 4.57 ERA and at 41 years old, age could be catching up to him. Junichi Tazawa has been overworked at times and currently has a 3.27 ERA. In addition to Uehara and Tazawa: Matt Barnes, Robbie Ross Jr., Tommy
Koji Uehara has a 4.57 ERA so far this season. GETTY IMAGES
Layne and Noe Ramirez have all been very inconsistent with not much dependability. In the last 10
days, the bullpen has four losses, which isn’t going to cut it. The bullpen has had major trouble hold-
ing leads, which no matter how good the offense is, isn’t going to get it done.
There is no question the Red Sox need to upgrade their bullpen and they should do it sooner rather than later. If they wait until the trade deadline they will surely need to overpay for whomever they acquire and also they could lose a few games before then because of what they have now. In the rotation, they have options and enough time to see what they have and potentially work itself out. The bullpen doesn’t have that luxury because no one in Triple-A Pawtucket is ready for the big leagues and the track records aren’t the same. From an offensive perspective, the Red Sox certainly have what it takes to make a deep run in the postseason, but they will not be able to go anywhere without some changes to their bullpen. Instead of waiting, Dave Dombrowski might be better off acquiring players now rather than later.
