COLIN NO LONGER A TROPICAL STORM IN FLA
1
The storm Colin dissipated off coastal North Carolina on Tuesday and moved out to sea after pounding the U.S. Southeast with torrential rains and winds, but flooding remained a concern in parts of Florida that received the brunt of the tropical storm. Colin was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone southwest of coastal North Carolina. As it moved off to sea in the afternoon, it packed winds up to 60 miles per hour, National Hurricane Center in Miami said. The storm was downgraded just hours after making landfall on Florida’s northern Gulf Coast early Tuesday. It then swept across Georgia on its path to the Atlantic, affecting coastal South and North Carolina.

ZOO REOPENS WITH REMODELED ENCLOSURE
2
Visitors flocked on Tuesday to the Cincinnati Zoo the day after prosecutors declined to charge the mother of a 3-yearold boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure, causing zookeepers to kill the endangered animal to protect the child. Hundreds of people got their first look at the remodeled enclosure, which the zoo changed to prevent a repeat of the May 28 incident that led to the shooting of the 17-year-old endangered western lowland silverback gorilla Harambe to prevent harm to the child. Emily Butler, 40, from Florence, Kentucky, who was visiting with her 8- and 11-year-old sons and other family, called Harambe’s death “sad all the way around,” but said they were excited to be at the habitat’s reopening. “I was concerned they might close the exhibit altogether,” she said. “This is the one place in Cincinnati we’ve always come to spend time with our kids.” REUTERS
US WARNS BANKS ON THREAT AFTER HEIST
3
U.S. regulators on Tuesday told banks to review cybersecurity protections against fraudulent money transfers in the wake of revelations that a hacking group used such messages to steal $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank. The notice from the Fed and other financial regulators came two weeks after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation privately urged banks to look for signs of possible cyberattacks. That report asked them to hunt for technical clues that they have been targeted by the same group, according to a notification seen on Tuesday by Reuters. The warnings suggest that U.S. government and law enforcement agencies are concerned that recent attacks on banks in emerging-market economies could lead to losses for big U.S. firms that rely on the so-called SWIFT fund-transfer network. Clinton wins NJ as she gathers enough delegates to clinch party’s nomination Nearly 700 delegates were up for grabs Tuesday night in six states. Hillary Clinton made history Tuesday with a victory in New Jersey’s Democratic primary, securing enough pledged delegates and superdelegates to become the first woman to win a major party’s presidential nomination. The win comes a day after The Associated Press declared her the presumptive Democratic nominee, after reporters canvassed undeclared superdelegates and found enough publicly voiced their support for Clinton ahead of Tuesday’s vote to put her over the “magic number” of 2,383 delegates. Nearly 700 delegates were at stake in six Democratic primaries Tuesday, with the biggest prize being
California’s 475. Polls in California closed at 8 p.m. local time, and results were not available at press. However, that state could hold the key to whether Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders continues to contest the Democratic nomination. Polls showed the race between Sanders and Clinton was a dead heat, and a Sanders victory could help make his case that declared superdelegates be free to vote for either candidate at July’s national convention in Philadelphia. In New Jersey’s primary, Clinton had 59.2 percent of the vote with 23 percent reporting to Sanders’ 40.8 percent. “We are at the brink of a historic moment, but we still have work to do,” Clinton wrote in a tweet. “To everyone who’s worked so hard, thank you. Let’s go win
this thing.” Despite the daunting delegate numbers, Sanders refused to concede the nomination to his rival. “Our goal is to get as many delegates as we possibly can and to make the case to superdelegates that I believe the evidence is fairly strong that I am the strongest candidate,” Sanders said during a press conference Monday. While the campaign has said it will continue to try and sway superdelegates to support Sanders, none have yet decided to do so, Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weaver acknowledged on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon. Barring a seemingly improbable large-scale switch among the party’s superdelegates, Clinton would seem to have the nomination on lockdown — a development that allows her to pivot her
messaging and campaign to target the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Trump — under fire from Democrats, Hispanics and his own party this week for comments he made questioning the impartiality of a federal judge presiding over two fraud class-action lawsuits involving his defunct Trump University because of his Mexican heritage — held a news conference earlier Tuesday at which he claimed his comments had been “misconstrued.” Trump again blamed the media, claiming inaccuracies had been reported, but continued to accuse Judge Gonzalo Curiel of treating him unfairly. The last primary before the conventions will be a Democratic primary in Washington, D.C. on June 14. METRO

Yearbook for young victims of gun violence humanizes startling stats The yearbook can be signed online and will be sent to Congress as an official petition. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Instead of watching her son graduate high school in 2010, Shenee Johnson took the stage that year and received 17-year-old Kedrick Ali Morrow Jr.’s diploma — one month after burying the teen. Kedrick was accidentally shot and killed while attending a graduation party in Queens just a month shy of finishing high school and earning an academic scholarship to St. John’s University where was planning to study law. Although the teen never got to graduate, the nonprofit New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is giving Kedrick the chance to have a yearbook signed — and hopefully bring some change. “It doesn’t matter where you live anymore, anyone can join this club and no one wants to belong to it,” Johnson said. “I don’t think that any parent has to suffer and bury our children. Our children have to bury us.” The New York teen is

more than 30,000 young Americans have lost their lives in gun-related violence before finishing high school. In New York City just last week a 16-year-old girl was shot by a submachine gun while babysitting her cousin at her Brooklyn home. The yearbook — which features victims of suicide, accidental shootings, gang-related violence and more — is designed just like a regular one but instead contains photographs of the victims and gives details on the schools they attended, quotes on who they were, and when and

All of the victims featured in the yearbook are 17 or younger. “Akeal was 14 when he was shot and passed away from his injuries on his 15th birthday,” the yearbook says below a photo of Akeal Christopher of Brooklyn. a yearbook they never got the opportunity to have, the books will also serve as a petition that will be handed over to Congress. “This is enough, because there are going to be more children that are never going to get a chance to be in their yearbook and never going to get the chance to graduate if we don’t act now,” Johnson said. Through creating the yearbook, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, along with the families of the students, are calling for the strengthening of American gun laws, most specifically universal background checks on gun purchases. Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, said the release of the yearbook comes during a time when most students are celebrating graduations and they felt like it was the perfect time to spread awareness and put real faces to an issue affecting families nationwide. “We wanted to profile the toll that gun deaths take on kids in particular,” Barrett said. She added that although the gun laws in New York are strong — with background checks required on all gun sales, handgun licensing and recertification require-

STUDENTS HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES TO GUNRELATED VIOLENCE IN THE LAST 15 YEARS ments, and limits imposed on high capacity ammunition weapons — there is still more that needs to be done. According to the group, New York state has the fourth lowest gun death rate in the country and gun deaths in the state have gone down 15 percent over the last 15 years. However, Barrett said that the state is still prone to firearms coming in illegally from other states and inspections need to be done more frequently to prevent illegal sales. And though the group is not expecting the yearbook to bring upon instant change, they do believe it will open people’s eyes and hopefully push for more reforms. “This is a huge loss of potential when these kids are taken. They all had aspirations, they all had hopes and dreams,” Barrett said. “Every life is valuable, especially a young life, and we as a nation need to wake up.”
CHILD ABUSE Queens pastor charged with sexually abusing girl, 6 A pastor has been charged in connection to allegations he molested a 6-year-old girl that his wife was baby-sitting at their Queens home. James Love, 45, has been charged with sexually abusing the 6-year-old at his Woodside apartment, the New York Post reported. Police said he assaulted the girl “on several occasions.” The mother of the victim said that Love, a pastor at New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Bushwick, “exposed his genitals to her and placed her hand on his genitals” and “rubbed his genitals against [hers]” while they were wearing their clothes, according
to allegations in a criminal complaint referenced by the New York Daily News. The complaint also alleged that the assaults took place between March and June, the Post stated, adding that Love’s church did not return a call seeking comment. “His name has been tarnished,” family spokesman Shaheed Muhammed told the Daily News. “He’s a very religious man. The Love family is a good family, a loving religious family.” Love denied the allegations, which included an accusation that he repeatedly tried to put his hand under the girl’s clothes, during a phone call arranged by authorities between Love and the victim’s mother. Final goodbye for last surviving Sept. 11 Ground Zero rescue dog Deep potholes like this one will soon be fewer in number. FLICKR
City able to stretch budget to repair more potholes Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that the Department of Transportation was able to repave more roadways than it had originally budgeted, meaning that streets needing attention throughout the city will soon be repaved ahead of schedule. Because of good weather and cheaper oil, a key ingredient in asphalt, road crews will be able to repave an additional 65 miles citywide, the mayor’s office reported. Those 65 miles will be on roads needing repair in all five boroughs. Now, with the additional asphalt, roads that will soon see repaving include Gun Hill Road, Bronx Park East and East 233rd Street in the Bronx; North and South Conduit Boulevard in Brooklyn; Utopia Parkway and Ditmars Boulevard in Queens; Third Avenue in Manhattan; and Richmond and Forest Hill roads in Staten Island, the mayor said. “From Gun Hill Road up in the Bronx down to the streets around
the Staten Island Mall, drivers all around the city will be feeling the effects,” de Blasio stated. The city had originally planned for 1,200 miles to be repaved by June 30 after the mayor had invested $1.6 billion, spread over the next 10 years, toward the resurfacing of New York City’s roads, according to de Blasio’s office. “DOT work crews, from those producing asphalt to those putting it down on our roads, deserve serious credit for stepping up to keep our roadways smoothly paved and safe,” DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said. “Because of their hard work, New Yorkers are both enjoying smooth rides and noticing fewer potholes, with complaints down by almost 50 percent this year.” In December 2015, de Blasio announced that FDR Drive, for the first time in 50 years, had been comprehensively repaved, and in March, the mayor and Trottenberg announced that 1 million potholes had been filled. Bretagne, the last surviving Sept. 11 rescue dog that spent days searching through the rubble at Ground Zero, has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. The 16-year-old golden retriever was put down on Monday at a veterinary clinic in Houston. According to BuzzFeed, she had been having difficulties walking for the past few years and was also suffering from kid-
ney failure. Bretagne — pronounced Brittany — was deployed a week after the 2001 terrorist attacks when she was just 2 years old. She was joined by her handler Denise Corliss and was part of the search and rescue team Texas Task Force 1, BuzzFeed reported. Together with Corliss, Bretagne worked 12-hour shifts for 10 days searching the scene for any human remains, according to ABC7 New York. In the year prior to the attacks, the beloved pup became one of the
founding canine members of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department’s K9 Search and Rescue Team in Texas. Along with responding to the World Trade Center, Bretagne also responded to other disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. tary school students and special needs students. “Her calm demeanor and warm heart helped the young and old through their own difficult moments,” the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement on Facebook. On Monday, the fire department organized a final farewell for Bretagne with volunteers saluting her as she made her way into the vet. “Some may say that the most a dog could be is a pet, however, to the over 400 members of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department, Bretagne was a civil servant, a hero and is family,” the statement said. “We will remember her fondly, and continue serving the community with her as inspiration.”

Black students more likely to be suspended According to data released by U.S. Education Department. Black students are almost four times more likely to be suspended from public school than white students, part of persistent disparities in U.S. schools, according to U.S. Education Department data released on Tuesday. The department’s Civil Rights Data Collection for the 2013-14 school year showed that the higher rate of suspensions come as black students are more likely than whites to be absent and to have inexperienced teachers, and are less likely to have access to science and math courses. Education Secretary John King said the disparities shown in the survey of 96,000 schools and 50 million students underscored the continuing need to improve equity in U.S schooling. The data “illustrate in powerful and troubling ways disparities in opportunities and experiences that different groups of students have in our schools,” he said in a statement. The number of students from kindergarten to 12th grade (K-12) who were suspended one or more times fell to 2.8 million, down almost 20 percent from the previous survey in the 2011-12 school year. About 1.1 million black K-12 students
were suspended, a rate 3.8 times that of white students. Black preschoolers were 3.6 times more likely to be suspended than whites, the data showed. Black K-12 students also were 1.9 times more likely to be expelled from school than white students. K-12 students with disabilities were more than as twice likely to be suspended as students without disabilities. Students with disabilities were twothirds of students kept apart from classmates or restrained, even though they made up 12 percent of students overall, the study showed. Among academic subjects, a third of high schools with high black or Latino enrollment offered calculus, compared with 56 percent for those with low numbers of black and Latinos. Just under half of high schools with high numbers of black and Latino students offered physics, compared with 67 percent for those with low Latino and black enrollment. The survey defined high black and Latino enrollment as schools with more than 75 percent Latino and black students. Eleven percent of African-American students are in schools where more than one-fifth of teachers are in their first year of teaching, versus 5 percent of white students. REUTERS

Unrest in Nigeria could affect what you pay at the pump. GETTY IMAGES
Oil hits 2016 high Eight-month highs call for potential supply shortages. Oil prices continued their climb on Tuesday, hitting eight-month highs, as expectations of U.S. crude draws underpinned a market already worried about potential supply shortages from attacks on Nigeria’s oil industry. U.S. crude stockpiles likely fell by 3.5 million barrels last week to mark a third straight week of declines, a preliminary Reuters poll showed. Trade group American Petroleum Institute was expected to cite a drawdown as well in its inventory report due Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., before official stockpiles data slated for Wednesday from the U.S. government. Crude oil rallied in the past two sessions after rebels in Nigeria’s Niger Delta vowed to halt output in the country, which until last year was Africa’s biggest producer
turning out about 2 million barrels per day (bpd). The Nigerian government said on Tuesday it was initiating talks with the rebels. “The market remains concerned about unscheduled supply interruptions with the latest coming from additional shut-ins in Nigeria,” Dominick Chirichella, senior partner at the Energy Management Institute in New York, said. “With the industry projecting a decline in total U.S. crude oil stocks in this week’s reports, the market bears are remaining on the sidelines.” Brent crude futures LCOc1 were up 55 cents at $51.10 a barrel by 12:20 p.m. EDT, after rising to $51.30 earlier, their highest since October. U.S. crude’s West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures CLc1 gained 40 cents to $50.09, having touched a fresh 2016 peak of $50.37 earlier. Both Brent and WTI have almost doubled in
value since winter, when they hit their lowest since 2003. Prices began recovering since end February on talk of an OPEC production freeze, which, however, did not materialize. The rally heightened after last month’s wildfires in Canada’s oil sands region and also has been supported by supply outages elsewhere, including Nigeria, Venezuela and Libya. New research finds low risk of Zika virus at Olympics One prediction results in no more than 15 Zika infections among foreign visitors. New research attempting to calculate the risk of the Zika virus at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro may reassure organizers and many of the more than 500,000 athletes and fans expected to travel to the epicenter of the epidemic. Controversy about the global gathering in August has grown as more about the disease becomes known. The mosquito-borne virus can cause crippling birth defects and, in adults, has been linked to the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre. The World Health Organization, acknowledging the concern, has called a meeting of its Zika experts to evaluate the transmission risk posed by the Olympics. The debate has played out largely in the absence of models calculating the risk to tourists attending the Olympics. New projections obtained by Reuters suggest the risk is small. One Sao Paulo-based research group predicted the Rio Olympics would result in no more than 15 Zika infections among the foreign visitors expected to attend the event, according to data reviewed by Reuters. The projection echoes that of a separate group of Brazilian scientists, also based at the University of Sao Paulo, in a study published in the journal Epidemiology & Infection in April. It found the Olympics would result in no more than 16 additional cases of the disease. Neither study attempted to assess the risk of even a single Olympics traveler carrying the virus back to a vulnerable home country — a central

concern of recent calls to reconsider the venue of the games. But a team of U.S. government epidemiologists calculated that Olympics visitors would account for .25 percent of the total risk of spreading Zika through air travel. That was based on 2015 data showing about 240 million people moved to and from areas that now have active transmission. “Even if the games were totally shut off and stopped, and the whole thing were canceled, 99 percent of that risk is still ongoing,” Dr. Martin Cetron, director of global migration and quarantine for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview. Questions about whether the games should go on arose in February when WHO declared Zika a global health emergency based on reports of a spike in a typically rare birth defect in Brazil. Since then, Brazil has identified more than 1,400 cases of microcephaly, a condition defined by small head size and underdeveloped brains,
linked to Zika. The WHO and CDC warned pregnant women against traveling to Zika outbreak areas, and advised men exposed to or infected with the virus to practice safe sex, or abstain altogether, for weeks to months upon their return. Several would-be Olympians have voiced concerns about competing in Rio. In the most direct critique to date, more than 200 bioethicists, lawyers and health experts sent a letter to WHO DirectorGeneral Margaret Chan calling for the games to be moved or postponed. WHO rejected the idea, saying it lacked scientific merit. Notably, WHO officials said, August is a low season for mosquitoes in Rio and the virus has already spread well beyond Brazil. But late last week, WHO said its Emergency Committee on Zika would meet this month to assess what is known about the risk. The agency said it was up to the International Olympic Committee to make any decision about changing the games. REUTERS

Fibroids? Prolonged Menstrual Cycles
Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti GETTY IMAGES
Nissan’s Infiniti looks to offer highway selfdriving on new models Autonomous driving is thought to reduce congestion and traffic deaths. Infiniti, the luxury division of Japanese carmaker Nissan, is considering rolling out highway self-driving capabilities for most new models, its president said on Tuesday, potentially overtaking German rivals in a race to offer autonomous driving. Executives for Chinese and global automakers speaking at final day of the Global Automotive Forum in Chongqing urged the industry to pursue autonomous driving as an advance that will reduce congestion and traffic deaths. Autonomous driving on highways is considered the first step to a fully self-driving car. So far few brands have made the technology available to customers. U.S. carmaker Tesla is a notable exception, having already rolled out highway autonomous driving in a software update to the Model S. German luxury brands like Daimler’s Mercedes and BMW offer semi-autonomous features such as stayin-lane technology and
automatic braking on top-end models. For Nissan’s Infiniti, only the Q50 sedan is currently equipped with its latest generation steering system that allows for autonomous driving above 37 mph on the highway.
“This will be rolled out as we are launching new vehicles one by one.” Roland Krueger, Infiniti’s president
“This will be rolled out as we are launching new vehicles one by one,” Roland Krueger, Infiniti’s president, told Reuters. “Whenever we are launching the next cars with such a steering system or the next generation of these systems, then of course we would offer those features to our customers.” More advanced autonomous driving features, such as those beyond highways, will require advances in infrastructure and regu-
lation, Krueger said. The luxury brand is planning to step up its investments in autonomous driving in China by launching an accelerator to nurture smart transportation-related startups and is considering locations in Beijing and Shanghai, he said. A similar effort in Hong Kong, where the brand is based, is supporting a startup that produced an app to monitor open parking spaces, for example. That capability could potentially lead to a car being able to automatically guide itself to an available parking space, Krueger said. Autonomous drive will appeal to younger, more daring buyers that the brand targets, especially in China where Infiniti’s average buyer is in their mid-30s, he said. Despite recording 34 percent sales growth in China last year, Infiniti remains a niche brand in China with sales of roughly 40,000 cars last year — roughly as many as BMW or Volkswagen’s Audi sells in one month here. Krueger declined to give a sales forecast for China in 2016. “We expect to grow definitely in a more normalized way than before,” he said. REUTERS

By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment of cancer,” noted the clinic director at the Downtown Medical in New York City. “The same holds true for treating knee arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at Downtown Medical because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis - the better the results. The key to avoiding knee replacement surgery is doing the correct treatments as soon as possible.” What is the “correct treatment?” “That depends,” said the director. “There is no one answer when it comes to medical conditions and knee arthritis is no different. That’s why, if you have knee pain, you should have it evaluated by a doctor who deals with and treats knee pain every day,” added the director. For many knee arthritis pain sufferers the right treatments is viscosupplementation. In this treatment, a preparation of Hyaluronic acid (such as Hyalgan) is injected directly into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a natural lubricant and shock absorber of your joints and is found to be decreased in arthritis sufferers. This is similar to running your car low or without oil. Obviously, the sooner you put oil back in the car - the less damage will be done. That’s why some doctors feel early viscosupplementation gets the best results and is so important for avoiding surgery.
Pain - the red is a knee joint with painful osteo-arthritis. Arthritis causes the joint space to decrease, grinding, stiffness, decreased motion, bone spurs, swelling and a lot of pain.
the artist simulated drawings above, picture #1 is a normal, pain-free knee. There is no arthritis and the knee can move and bend freely without pain.
Successful Treatment - Hyalgan (blue) being precisely injected directly into the knee joint using laser guided hologic imaging. Advanced imaging allows treatments to be as precise as possible. Hyalgan can lubricate the joint and decrease pain.
Failed Treatment - the injection (and Hyalgan) misses the joint space. Research shows this occurs up to 30% of the time without the use of laser guided hologic imaging to guide the injection. This is why Hyalgan may not have worked for you.
requiring months of rehabilitation. Some doctors think modern treatments done early enough can keep baby boomers from going under the knife.
Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery
Everyone Wants Proof: In
The director, believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space. That’s why the doctors at Downtown Medical use advanced imaging technology called a “C-Arm.” A C-Arm allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the injection go where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing injections without digital imaging can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. If you had viscosupplementation treatments without advanced imagining and did not get good results - this may be why. “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The keys are to not wait, get a good evaluation from an expert and make sure advanced digital imaging (C-Arm) is used to make sure you have the best chance for success.”
Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery

Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.

airport checkpoints and raised concerns about the TSA’s vetting of its workforce. The TSA has cut back on directing travelers into faster lanes that let them keep shoes on and laptops packed. That change along with low staffing levels and more flyers had sparked long lines this spring. Roth, in testimony before the Senate Committee on Homeland Se-
curity & Governmental Affairs, said the TSA has come up with nearly two dozen ways to improve procedures. “Over the past 11 months, we have undertaken a systematic and deliberate transformation of TSA,” Administrator Peter Neffenger, who took the TSA top job after the lapses, said at the hearing. Neffenger said the TSA has retrained staff and is vetting employees daily. In addition, he said TSA is working with about a dozen airports to increasingly automate screening and create a “true curb-to-gate security environment, as opposed to just focusing it all around that checkpoint.” Delta Air Lines Inc. and Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, opened two lines last month that automate the distribution of bins for carry-on bags at checkpoints, to avoid screening bottlenecks. Neffenger said the lanes have improved efficiency at the checkpoints by 30 percent.

New army base set up near Ukraine’s northern border. Russia is building an army base near its border with Ukraine, the latest in a chain of new military sites along what the Kremlin sees as its frontline in a growing confrontation with NATO. While there have been no clashes between the former Cold War rivals, Russia is building up forces on its western frontiers at a time when the NATO alliance is staging major military exercises and increasing deployments on its eastern flank. A Reuters reporter who visited the Russian town of Klintsy, about
30 miles from Ukraine, saw a makeshift army camp, large numbers of newly arrived servicemen and military vehicles. Two soldiers in camouflage gear who were manning a checkpoint in a forest turned the reporter away, saying they were guarding a “special military site. Last year, Reuters also reported on construction of two other bases further to the south on Russia’s border with Ukraine. The defense ministry has not acknowledged the deployment of troops to Klintsy, which usually serves as a stop for truck drivers traveling between Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. However, a town
council official said Klintsy had been chosen as the site of a newlyformed division, and that so far about 240 soldiers had arrived. “What’s to hide? That they’ve come? They’ve arrived, said council deputy chairman Oleg Kletny. “They’re going to be garrisoned here. When completed, the base will be the latest component in a build-up of forces along a line running from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south. On the western side of the line, NATO has been rotating troops and equipment in greater numbers to members states that were part of the Sovietled Warsaw Pact during the Cold War.

cannabinoids and cocaine.” Hilton previously failed a mandatory drug test and was sent to rehab in January, but a court denied a request for jail time. According to authorities cited by Page Six, he also “violated probation by trespassing, failing drug tests, failing to complete three treatment programs and traveling out of California without permission from his probation officer.” The future inmate has until Wednesday to turn himself in and begin his jail sentence ... you know, this time.

The Kardashians’ Dash boutique was firebombed
While the sheriff’s deputies are more likely to do crowd control when the Kardashians arrive at their store, this time they went to investigate a potential arson case. On Monday night in
West Hollywood, someone threw a Molotov cocktail through the front window of the empty Dash Boutique, owned by the Kardashian sisters. Luckily it failed to ignite, leaving the prop-
erty inside undamaged. The attacker hasn’t been identified and no arrests have been made. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney began their retail empire 10 years ago when they opened the first location in Calabasas. Since then, they have added three stores, including the West Hollywood location. They have not commented on the arson attempt, but Kim tweeted before the attack that night indicating that she was out of town. Guess it’s time to make a dash for the door!

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT OF FOOT & ANKLE PROBLEMS IN ADULTS & CHILDREN
Andi Dorfman’s ‘feminist moment’ If going through a breakup is hard, then going through one after your proposal was televised to millions of people might seem impossible. For Andi Dorfman, this scenario wasn’t just a nightmare — it was her reality. The 29-year-old made headlines after walking out on Season 18 of “The Bachelor” after a heated confrontation with Juan Pablo Galavis. She returned to ABC and starred on Season 10 of “The Bachelorette,” where she got engaged to — and subsequently broke up with — fellow Atlanta native Josh Murray. After calling off her nine-month engagement, Dorfman decided to trade in the “tears and sesame chicken” for a new life in New York City and a tellall, “It’s Not Okay.” You don’t include the names of your exes in the book, but refer to them by numbers. Obviously, I’m not hiding their identity. I think we all know what number belongs to everyone. It just felt like a moment of empowerment to kind of put them all in the category and number them. It was like a feminist mo-
but I’m just going to go out on a limb and say, I don’t think it’s healthy. Do you really want to get a Christmas card from your ex, with his new wife and their golden retriever and cute kids? Nothing good comes out of it. Go get other friends that add value to your life.
ment — this is my story, I’m writing it, I’m trying to get over a breakup, and the last thing I wanted to do is splash the names of all my exes all through the pages of my story. What are some red flags people should look out for in a relationship? The first one is you ask yourself, “Are you happy?” And I know you’re not going to be happy every single day, but you get to choose to be in a relationship, and you should choose a relationship that adds value to your life, and makes you a better person. I think it’s very easy to tell when you’re not yourself. I said it in the book — I operated on two speeds [during my relationship], silent or angry, and that’s not who I am. It really starts with that first step: “Am I happy?” If there are red flags in a relationship, can people move past them? Nobody is perfect. You’re not going to find that perfect person; you’re not perfect either. There are going to be things that bother you, there are going to be red flags, in a sense. Are they red flags that are deal breakers? There’s an important difference between a red flag and a flaw.

You say in the book that there’s no point to being friends with your ex. Do you still believe that? I don’t think it’s true for everybody,
Have you gotten back into the dating scene since the book came out? I always say I’m happily single. I’ve dated plenty of guys in the past two years. I date in New York, which is very different, very interesting coming from the South. But I’m still happily single. What’s different about the dating scene in New York? In New York, people are a lot older when they start to date. In the South, everyone kind of gets married younger and starts families younger. In NYC, everyone’s older, so you know more about yourself. It’s less of figuring it out and more of figuring the right person.

Who’s your right person? I would love to date a guy that’s just nice — the quiet, confident, guy who isn’t afraid to be nice. I’m not saying he’s a pushover, by any means, but somebody that makes me want to be nice to him back. I think that’s so important that you forget in relationships. You’re partners. You should be the nicest to your partner than anybody else in the world. It’s kind of like that “y’all against the world” mentality. Do you think you’re able to reminisce about the good times and move on? [For those going through a breakup,] just think of all the negative things for now. I think it helps you put everything into perspective. But in hindsight, a year and a half or whatever later, it is nice to be able to look at it and have a feeling not of animosity or bitterness, but indifference and acceptance for a past that was happy and sad and many other things. Birdy talks geishas and ‘leaving the nest’ The musician gears up for a show on Thursday at Irving Plaza in New York. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

Birdy has accomplished more in the five years of her young career than most hope to accomplish in a lifetime. At just 14, she wowed the world with her heartfelt cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love. Since then, the British
Invisalign
musician has toured the world, sold 10.5 million records worldwide and is now on her third album, “Beautiful Lies. We chatted with the now 20-year-old about being inspired by geishas, her upcoming tour and what it’s like living on her own for the first time. Where are you calling from today? I’m calling from London. Sunny London. It’s really beautiful today, actually. I’ve just come up from my family’s home in the countryside, in New Forest, which is in the south of England. But I’ve been living on my own for the past year and a half for the first time.

What’s the biggest change for you living on your own now? Cooking for myself and taking the bins out. [Laughs] The weirdest thing is that it’s so quiet. I’m used to a full house of people and it’s usually loud because we’re all musicians and we all make so much noise. It’s weird having so much space to think.

have all that space to ďŹ ll songs with. It’s been amazing for writing. I have an upright piano ‌ it’s so nice. You mentioned cooking. Getting creative in the kitchen, too? I can’t cook anything. I’m so bad. [Laughs] I’ve made myself ill a few times because I’m such a bad cook. I try not to. Apart from pasta. But luckily that’s my favorite. So it’s been three years since your last album, “A Fire Within.â€? What have you been up to in that time? I’ve been making the new album [“Beautiful Liesâ€?] for a year and a half and touring a lot. I came to America to support Christina Perri for two months and gosh [it was so long ago]. Two years, I think. But that was amazing. To tour on a bus with my band. It was so much fun. Making this album was a chance to get back to normality and see my family. Let’s talk about the new album. Were you inspired by anything in particular this time around? I notice some eastern inuence with the artwork. It’s inspired a bit by a book called “Memoirs of a Geisha.â€? I read it at
the beginning of the process and it’s about a girl who is ripped from her family in the country and is forced to become a geisha in the city and has to learn to fight for herself. The imagery in the book is so beautiful as well. I love the strength of the geisha. I’m wearing a kimono on the album cover and wear it onstage sometimes because I love how strong it makes me feel. What would you say is the most personal song for you on “Beautiful Lies? One of the most personal for me is “Lost it All. I had a lot of frustration at the time I was writing it because I wasn’t as confident as I wanted to be. But it takes time to know what you want and try different things. Looking back, it’s a part of life and growing up. You’re about to hit the road again for your upcoming tour. What are three things you can’t leave home without? I have to take my

THINGS TO DO
Ghostbusters want you! BBQ Films’ 20th movie-themed party is its biggest yet. EVA KIS @thisiskis
eva.kis@metro.us
Ever wanted to strap on a proton pack and do some supernatural pest control? Live out your Ghostbusters fantasies beginning today at their new headquarters in Williamsburg. The setup is thanks to BBQ Films, who is celebrating the 1984 film — and the gender-swapped remake coming next month — with a “transportive experience.” “You’re transported into a different world,” explains co-founder Gabriel Rhoads, “where the movie you’re watching is almost a documentary of what’s happening around you.” If you’ve never been to one of their events — previously, BBQ Films has brought to life fan favorites like “Back to the Future,” “Beetlejuice” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” — don’t expect to just watch a movie in a themed room: An entire setting from the film is recreated and filled with performers and interactive elements. “This is fundamentally a social experience with the guests in the center of that action,” he says. “You get a chance to play inside this world.” The feeling Rhoads and his team of over 250 are going for is nothing short of achieving nerd nirvana. “This is a Baptist prayer rally or front-row center at a Bruce Spring-
steen concert or a monster truck rally,” he says. “You’re super in it because everyone else is super in it with you.” How they do that is by giving attendees a role. For “Ghostbusters,” everyone is a potential new recruit, an idea that reflects the film’s “everyman, and now everywoman, story,” Rhoads says. “Anybody can be a Ghostbuster, you just have to be smart, dedicated, brave,” says Rhoads. Brooklyn’s Villain has been completely transformed into the new Ghostbusters HQ, where guests complete training scenarios (including a notyet-released iPad game), encounter the paranormal (via special Giphypowered scenes), drink Hi-C Ecto Cooler cocktails and relive the history of 30 years of ghostbusting with props like the Ecto-1 car and proton packs from 1984 and the new film. Actors will enhance what’s happening onscreen with performances — and fans bring their own magic. When BBQ Films staged the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance from “Back to the Future,” the group brought in professional swing dancers, but it was a real-life couple who stole the show by perfectly re-enacting the choreography. “That’s a very active involvement in storytelling, fandom and the people around you, insofar as you actually make the experience of the people around you better by you being there. That’s powerful, that’s social and that’s community.”
As a new parent himself, Rhoads is looking forward to the event’s first Saturday matinee for families. While there’s the emotional component of parents sharing something they love with their kids, Rhoads hopes it goes even further: “What turns kids onto science? Proton packs?” he says. “If that works, that’s fantastic.”

Millennial City How the “selfie” generation is revolutionizing the real estate game in the Big Apple. TheRealDeal.com is a daily blog and monthly magazine covering real estate in the New York metro area.
The sheer number of millennials — those born between 1981 and 1997 — makes them all but impossible to ignore. About 75.4 million strong, millennials surpassed the baby boomer generation last year, according to the Pew Research Center. One in five New Yorkers is a millennial, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. There’s no denying the generation is setting trends, so here’s a look at some of the key areas in which millennials are permeating the NYC real estate market.
Rental game Despite hype over the condo market, NYC is still a city of renters — and millennials make up a good chunk of that. With the barrier of entry to buying residential real estate much higher now than it was before the financial crisis in 2008, many New Yorkers (particularly younger
ones) have been forced to stay in the rental game. This fact has not been lost on developers, who have geared much of their NYC rental product to millennials — whether it’s extra bike storage (one in five millennials bikes at least once a week, according to the Urban Land Institute), USB charging ports (twothirds of millennials don’t have landlines, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or co-working space (nearly one-third of millennials are self-employed, according to a 2015 survey by online stock brokerage TD Ameritrade). “Millennials are a big chunk of the rental market, so I have to pay attention to what they like and what they don’t like,” said David Maundrell, who recently sold his Brooklyn based-firm Aptsandlofts.com to rental giant Citi Habitats.
Developers are taking notes Maundrell is marketing several Brooklyn rentals geared to millennials, including a 124-unit building at 180 Franklin Ave. in Clinton Hill, which has an art gallery and co-working space. Meanwhile, millennials are the “driving demographic” behind Ironstate Development’s 900-unit rental complex known as Urby Staten Island, said its president, David Barry.
The $275 million development, which is located in Staten Island’s Stapleton neighborhood, includes 35,0000 square feet of retail, where Barry envisions seven or eight restaurants and stores. The first phase of the complex is set to be complete this summer and will have an urban garden and communal kitchen, where residents can throw large dinner parties and host events.
Their way Developer TF Cornerstone has all but eliminated the paperwork associated with leasing and paying rent — a move designed to appeal to millennials, said Executive Vice President Sofia Estevez. It’s also negotiating with Citi Bike to open a station at 4720 Center Boulevard, a Long Island City project, and adding co-working throughout its residential portfolio. Co-working spaces are — by far — the most popular amenity, said Jordan Sachs, CEO of Bold New York. “It’s not always about finishes and layouts. It’s how developers will be improving their lifestyle,” said the 31-year-old Sachs, whose firm is marketing Sky, the 1,175-unit rental tower at 604 W. 42nd St., which offers a co-working space and a slew of other amenities. Inside Look: Apartments with dream closet space Closets so grand you could live in them. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA @CristabelleT
cristabelle.tumola@metro.us
For New Yorkers in tiny apartments who never cook, the time-honored hack is to store out-ofseason clothing in the oven until it’s needed again. Other cheap solutions for lack of closet space include under-bed storage, fabric wardrobe closets and renting outside storage space. But the fact remains that for many residents of the five boroughs, there never seems to be enough closet space — especially in this fashion-forward city. There are the lucky few, however, who don’t need to move to the suburbs to find the walk-in closet of their dreams. Here are three apartments with plenty of room for a massive wardrobe and more.

if it weren’t for the built-ins. Its size is no surprise, as the $30 million unit is 3,200 square feet and takes up a full floor. The four-bedroom home is “peppered with closets and also includes 12-foot ceilings, a key-lock elevator, terrace, Juliet balconies and formal dining room.
130 W. 12th St., Apt. 2A At more than 2,800 square feet, this Greenwich Village home has the complete master suite. It includes a stepdown bedroom, fully outfitted walk-in closet and bathroom with radiant-heated floors. One of the additional bedrooms features a sliding wall that doubles as a projection screen. The building’s amenities include cold storage, private storage, a residents’ gym and energy-efficient design featuring emergency generator and filtered fresh air and water.
This three-bedroom, three-bath condo located at the Grand Beekman, listed for $3.1 million, boasts “abundant closet space, according to its description. That space includes California closets and a custom designed walk-in closet in the master bedroom. There is also a Juliet balcony in the master bedroom with floor-toceiling glass doors.

Jets fans may have no choice but to re-embrace Geno Smith No news has been bad news when it comes to Ryan Fitzpatrick potentially re-signing in New York. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
Judging by the back and forth between the Jets’ brass and Ryan Fitzpatrick’s camp, it appears both sides are dug in rather deep, and if that holds true until the start of next month’s training camp, it’ll mean Jets fans will have to accept riding the Geno Coaster. Geno Smith, the much-maligned quarterback since he was selected in the second round of the 2013 draft, could realistically be Gang Green’s No. 1 guy to start the season. And for Jets fans who think there’s a slight chance that Smith could be usurped by either second-year pro Bryce Petty or rookie Christian Hackenberg, they haven’t been paying attention to reports coming out of organized team activities (OTAs). Hackenberg, the strong-armed neophyte from Penn State, has expectantly looked like a typical rookie. His passes are fluttering — particularly the intermediate routes —- his footwork is robotic, and he tends to rely on arm strength,

which leads to sailed passes. Head coach Todd Bowles has admitted that his rookie “looks sloppy at times, but reasoned that with the amount the defensive coaches have thrown at him at OTAs, it’s understandable. “There’s going to be a growth period, assured

Gang Green notes: - The numbers suggest that Smith can play above his means when he has at least a serviceable receiving corps. When he has good wideouts, his numbers spike (52.3 QBR and 60.5 completion percentage) compared to the aforementioned struggling group that was led by Kerley (14.8 QBR and a 47.9 rate). - Judging by the town hall
Bowles, adding that he fully expects Hackenberg to feel “more comfortable in training camp. Petty, who’s primarily worked with the second unit, hasn’t acquitted himself much better — despite having an extra year of experience than Hackenberg. Sure, it’s still early in the process, but it just goes to show how little the Jets have in the quarterbacking department,
event that the team held last Wednesday for 1,000 seasonticket holders, the Jets faithful apparently doesn’t have as much faith in Smith as Bowles claims he does. The meet-and-greet included Bowles, general manager Mike Maccagnan, and team owner Woody Johnson. The questions were Fitzpatrick-centric and according to reports, a chorus of boos
erupted any time Smith’s name was brought up, and even a “We Want Fitz!â€? chant made its rounds throughout the night. Good times all around. - Linebacker Darron Lee is still one of 10 ďŹ rst-round picks who has yet to sign his slotted rookie deal. It appears there’s still some haggling over the amount of guaranteed money being oered.
sans Fitzpatrick. Smith, however, could make a compelling argument that the Jets don’t need to overpay for the bearded one. Judging by his career numbers when he has actual talent to throw to, he’s looked more than serviceable. If the same supporting cast surrounds Smith, as it did Fitzpatrick during his career year, last season, it’s plausible that the former West Virginia star
could regain his mojo. And considering that Smith was designated as the starter before the IK Enemkpali mess, Smith could gain a stranglehold on the gig and never relinquish it. Â Â Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are a decided upgrade over what Smith was throwing to during a rookie campaign when he tossed 21 interceptions. His receiving corps consisted of guys
like Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson, and Kellen Winslow Jr., so it’s obvious to see why Smith was a below-average quarterback with that stable.  Decker, who was brought in to be the Jets’ primary target at the start of the 2014 season, has shown he’s obviously not really a No. 1 option. But paired with Marshall, second-year speedster Devin Smith, young tight end Jace Amaro, and one of the game’s great receiving running backs in Matt Forte, this supporting cast gives any quarterback hope to succeed.   The age-old debate of which position makes which better between the quarterback and receivers is usually up for contest. But when it comes to Smith and his plethora of receiving options, it’s safe to say that the surrounding cast is certainly up to the task of carrying the inconsistent signal caller.Â

Famed street fighter, YouTube sensation and eventual MMA star Kimbo Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) died Monday at the age of 42. “We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family,” said Bellator president Scott Coker in a statement. “Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans, and teammates.” The cause of death was not yet official by Tuesday afternoon but many have speculated on Twitter that Slice died of heart failure due to steroid abuse. Slice tested positive for anabolic steroids and elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratios in February. The link between heart failure and steroid abuse is still a contested issue. In 2014, professional wrestler and former steroid user Ultimate Warrior died from “cardiovascular disease,” according to the Maricopa County (Arizona) medical examiner’s office, but the death was

deemed “natural.” In 2005, HBO’s “Real Sports” issued a report on steroids and offered a much different take on the notion that use and abuse directly lead to heart failure. “Want to know how many scientific studies definitively link the use of anabolic steroids to death or even serious health risks? One? 15? 20? Try zero,” said reporter Armen Keteyian in the show’s open. The American Heart Associated said in a 2010 journal (Circulation: Heart Failure) that “long-term anabolic steroid use may weaken the heart more
than previously thought and may increase the risk of heart failure.” Via Sciencedaily.com: “Anabolic-androgenic steroids mimic the naturally occurring testosterone, a muscle-building hormone that promotes male sexual characteristics. “In the small study, investigators found that the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, was significantly weaker during contraction (systolic function) in participants who had taken steroids compared to a group of similar nonsteroid users.”
