WIND-TOSSED BEACH UMBRELLA KILLS VIRGINIA WOMAN
1
A wind-driven beach umbrella struck and killed a 55-year-old woman in Virginia Beach, Virginia, local police said. The woman, Lottie Michelle Belk, of Chester, Virginia, was hit when a strong gust of wind tossed the anchored umbrella across the sand on Wednesday afternoon, Virginia Beach police said in a statement. Belk was struck in the torso and went into cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel transported her to a hospital, where she died, the statement said. “There is no evidence of foul play,” police said. Virginia Beach is about 110 miles south of Washington, D.C.

CALIFORNIA AG SLAMS SENTENCE IN STANFORD SEX ASSAULT CASE

California Attorney General Kamala Harris, the leading U.S. Senate candidate from the state, has joined the outpouring of criticism against a six-month jail sentence given to a former Stanford University swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. Harris, speaking to reporters in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday, said she was concerned that the “victim’s voice was not heard” at the trial. “It was not respected, and she was not given dignity in the process,” said Harris, a Democrat, according to video from a local television station. With the comments, Harris has become the most high-profile elected official in California to question the sentence for former Stanford student Brock Turner, 20, last week by a Santa Clara Superior Court judge. Prosecutors had asked for a six-year prison term. REUTERS

Verizon Communications did not submit the highest offer this week in the second round of bidding for Yahoo Inc.’s core internet assets, according to a person familiar with the matter. No committed financing was required for second-round bids, and Yahoo will put together in the coming days a new shortlist of bidders from which it will solicit binding offers, the person added. Yahoo and Verizon offered no immediate comment. Earlier on Thursday, CNBC reported, citing sources, that Verizon’s bid of more than $3.5 billion was topped by multiple offers at or above $5 billion. It did not name the parties that made those offers. REUTERS
NY begins painting ‘activity’ zones to regulate Times Square NYPD enforcement of the new rules and zones will begin June 21. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Costumed superheroes, topless women wearing only paint, street performers and Disney characters are being put in their place in Times Square. City Department of Transportation crews on Thursday taped off areas of pedestrian plazas and painted sidewalks to mark eight zones where commercial activity, such as soliciting money to have your picture taken with Spider-Man, will be permitted after June 21. “The conversion of Times Square into a pedestrian plaza has made it a truly amazing, special place — but it has needed ground rules,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “Thanks to the hard work of the Times Square Alliance; the administration; and my colleagues, Councilmembers Dan Garodnick and Corey Johnson, now it will have them.”
Attraction and revulsion For some, posing with the topless women or having their child meet a Disney character is part of the attraction of visiting Times Square. But others have complained that public nudity isn’t appropriate for young children to see, and some of the superheroes and other costumed performers haven’t always stayed in character. Last month, a man known as “the hug guy” was arrested for allegedly punching a tourist after jumping into her picture then demanding she pay him, CBS2 New York reported. A Spider-Man allegedly attacked a police officer, a “Sesame Street”
Designated activity zone TWITTER; MAP BY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
Under the new law, these spaces are meant for any sort of entertainment, performances, vending or posing or taking photos for any form of compensation, donation or tip. Pedestrian Flow Zones will be solely for people looking to get through the area and create a “safe and continuous movement of pedestrian traffic.”
Going forward Elmo was arrested for allegedly harassing people and yelling anti-Semitic slurs and a “Toy Story” Woody was accused of groping women. “These people are horrible,” Upper West Side resident Daniella Lattes told CBS2. “They attack people, they fight with each other.” Local organizations and elected officials pushed for regulating solicitors and performers after an increase in reports of characters fighting, harassing, yelling and stealing from people. According to a survey by the Times Square Alliance, 61 percent of people working in Times Square reported experiencing a negative encounter with a costumed character or other commercial solicitors. Of those, 51 percent said they felt unsafe.
Regulations In April, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill that gave the DOT control over all 53 pedestrian plazas across the city, allowing the agency to set rules for the spaces, including restricting where the solicitors could operate. Starting Wednesday night and going through the end of the week, the DOT is installing activity and flow zones in Times Square from Broadway to 7th Avenue between 42nd and 47th streets. The zones will be delineated with painted tape but also feature signs identifying each area. The Designated Activity Zones — targeted for commercial activities including the costumed and painted solicitors — are painted teal and measure 8 feet by 50 feet.
Starting on Monday, the DOT will have street ambassadors, together with police officers, conducting education and outreach in both English and Spanish. They will distribute fliers with maps indicating the zones and the rules. The NYPD will begin enforcement of the new rules starting June 21 and the DOT will monitor implementation and also determine if any adjustments need to be made. Before the City Council voted to approve the bill giving the DOT control over the public spaces, costumed characters called the regulation an ”apartheid” against the solicitors and accused the city of taking away their jobs. According to PIX11 New York, some of the street performers are planning to file a lawsuit against the city.

One nonprofit is asking residents in neighborhoods across New York City and New York state to open their minds and come up with ideas that will bring change right to their backyards. In partnership with the New York State Health Foundation, the nonprofit In Our Backyards — also known as ioby — has launched a neighborhood challenge looking for project ideas aimed at creating healthier, safer and greener communities. The challenge — which provides $100,000 in matching grants — is open to residents in six neighborhoods in New York City — including Brownsville, Claremont, East Harlem, Hunts Point, the Lower East Side and Morrisania — and three areas in upstate New York. According to Lourdes

Rodriguez, program officer for the NYS Health Foundation, the neighborhoods were selected for this challenge because they showed poor health outcomes and received low health rankings in the state. The areas are also ones that already have a large community involvement, which can be used to implement programs or spread awareness. “From the beginning we place a lot of value in resident-driven change because to assume neighborhoods need to be rescued from themselves is really a wrong assumption,” Rodriguez said. “The piece to build a better community

comes from within itself.” Through the Healthy Neighborhoods Challenge, residents in the neighborhoods are asked to submit an application — by Aug. 1 — for their ideas that are aimed
at improving public health outcomes. There is not limit to what an idea can be and can include improved access to healthy affordable foods; promote walking, biking or other forms of exercise; creative nutrition classes and creating community gardens. According to Katie Lorah, director of communications and creative strategy for ioby, the length of the idea is also not an issue and one-day festivals or fairs are also encouraged. “The ideas are that they happen quickly and by making a small change that is physical, they can

spark a large conversation,” Lorah said. “We are very open to things that are not permanent but play a catalyzing role in the community.” All applications must offer a positive impact on the public health of residents within the communities selected; be implemented before May 2017; request from $250 to $5,000 in matching funds; include a team or three or more people working on the project; and be resident-led. Once winners are selected, ioby — which since 2009 has been offering an online platform for individuals across the
country to have access to crowdfunding and resources in their communities — will help individuals plan, crowdfund and later carry out their projects. The group will train individuals on project planning, online fundraising and also guide them through their fundraising process. All funds up to $5,000 will be matched through the partnership with the NYS Health Foundation, all summing up to a total of $100,000. “We are encouraging people to think creatively on how to make their neighborhood healthier,” Lorah said.

An Instagram video captured the moment when several NYPD officers tackled a man unknowingly biking toward a police blockade for President Barack Obama on Wednesday afternoon. Police attempted to stop 59-year-old Daniel Provencio from getting in the way of the president’s motorcade before throwing him to the ground, but according to the New York Post he didn’t respond quickly enough to their warnings. All eyes were on the Manhattan local until Obama’s car drove past East 50th Street and stole all the attention. Provencio and his Citi Bike remained on the ground detained by officers while onlookers cheered and waved at the president’s car.

NYPD: Attempted rapist follows woman in Queens The suspect dragged the victim into the backyard of a building where she fought him off. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Police are looking for a man caught on surveillance video early Wednesday following a woman he later attempted to rape. On June 8 at about 4:45 a.m. the suspect followed the 51-year-old victim along 121st Street near 23rd Avenue before approaching her from behind, according to authorities.
The man then told the woman he had a gun and that he was going to rape her, police said. He then dragged the victim into the backyard of a residential building where the woman fought him off and yelled for help. The man then ran away southbound on 121st Street. Authorities describe the suspect as a Hispanic man between 23 and 25 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 180 pounds. He has a tattoo of a cross and Jesus on his right arm, and was last seen wearing a white tank top, dark colored jeans and yellow work boots. When the driver took the man to the vicinity of Drake Street and Randall Avenue, the suspect then grabbed the victim’s cellphone, cops said. The two men then

City offers $100 million to buy land for long-awaited Bushwick Inlet Park Site of Bushwick park NY PARKS
The purchase would allow the city to complete the Bushwick Inlet Park project along the East River.
CHRIS CAESAR @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
New York City is offering $100 million to buy land at the site of a former Brooklyn storage facility in an effort to complete the Bushwick Inlet Park project. The CitiStorage warehouse in Williamsburg, located between North 10th and 12th streets, was the site of a sixalarm fire in 2015. The parcel would be the last piece of land needed for the city to complete the longenvisioned park, offering some green space for residents along the banks of the East River on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Mayor Bill de Blasio posted a letter from his
office to the owners of the property on Twitter: “As part of our longstanding efforts and continued commitment to making Bushwick Inlet Park a reality, I am pleased to offer you $100,000,000 for the purchase of the blocks and lots listed above,” the letter from the mayor’s office reads. “The City believes this is a fair and reasonable offer based on the properties’ current … zoning.” Planning initiatives for the park date back to the 1980s and would reflect years of work and the combination of other properties acquired by the city, including two others under de Blasio’s mayorship. The offer stands for 60 days, according to the letter.

US pilot examiners get more mental health training after Germanwings crash Medical examiners who evaluate airline pilots have received more training in detecting mental health problems, U.S. regulators said on Thursday, after reviewing procedures in the wake of last year’s deadly Germanwings crash caused by a co-pilot who suffered from severe depression. The Federal Aviation Administration stopped short of calling for formal psychological tests on pilots. That step was recommended for new pilots in Europe after the March 2015 incident, in which a Germanwings plane crashed into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board. The FAA said it will help airlines and unions expand support networks for pilots such as confidential hotlines, and integrate these into airlines’ safety management programs. The decisions, which followed recommendations by a government-industry task force, underscore the challenge of making pilots feel comfortable disclosing health issues, despite risking a required medical leave or an end to their careers. Obama had been expected to support Clinton since she won enough delegates this week to clinch the Democratic nomination and become the first woman to lead a major U.S. party as its presidential nominee. Sanders, who met with Obama at the White House earlier on Thursday, said afterward he would work with Clinton to defeat Trump. Sanders said, however, that he would stay in the race to compete in the final Democratic primary vote in Washington, D.C., on June 14.
Sources: Clinton ally Warren weighs potential VP role, sees hurdles Sen. Elizabeth Warren has considered the idea of serving as Hillary Clinton’s running mate but sees obstacles to that choice as she prepares to endorse the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, several people familiar with Warren’s thinking told Reuters. While her thinking could evolve, Warren has concerns about joining a Clinton ticket, including the question of whether running two women would give the Democrats the best shot at defeating Republican Donald Trump, one source said. Advisers to Warren, a ďŹ ery critic of Wall Street and a popular ďŹ gure among progressive Democrats, have been in close contact with Clinton’s campaign team and the conversations have increased in frequency in recent weeks, the sources said. Warren has signaled to people close to her that she is intrigued by the possibility of being Clinton’s No. 2 but has not discussed the role with Clinton, 68, or anyone else from her campaign, the people said.

1, 2, 3 — CLINTON LOSES? First female presumptive nominee for a major political party! Glass ceiling cracked! Thank you America! For Hillary Clinton, this was a drop-mic-walk-away week. Despite all the haters, the alleged “vast right wing conspiracy,” and a talent for making statements she later has to clarify, she has made history. And now the numbers say this is Clinton’s race to lose. If she holds onto all the states Barack Obama won in 2012, she wins big. If she can add one or two — like Arizona or Georgia — it’s a landslide. And if Donald Trump keeps saying things so nutty even his Republican allies run to hide, the electorate may give her the White House plus a year of free cable with HBO. “Come in here, Bill, Khaleesi is riding toward Winterfell!” So what could go wrong? Plenty. 1. Trump gets his groove back In the Republican primary, the billionaire from New York chewed up challengers like a feral cat. He has a knack for picking damning nicknames, staging surprise attacks, grabbing populist themes and turning his lack of experience into a platinum-plated qualification for office — all of which could be

lawyerly answers all feed the idea that she can’t be trusted — which still holds the potential of incinerating her at the polls. 3. The economy … or terrorism Or something else. Clinton says she’ll continue the legacy of Obama. That’s fine as long as enough voters feel good about that. BRIEF US appeals court: No constitutional right to concealed guns Firearm owners have no constitutional right to carry a concealed gun in public, a divided U.S. appeals court in California ruled on Thursday, upholding the right of oďŹƒcials to only grant permits to those facing a speciďŹ c danger. The decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a victory for gun control advocates which
sets a legal precedent in western states, was seen as unlikely to be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court in the near future. The San Francisco-based court, in a 7-4 decision, found California’s San Diego and Yolo counties did not violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects the right to bear arms, when they denied some applicants a concealed ďŹ rearm license. “We hold that the Second
Amendment does not protect, in any degree, the carrying of concealed ďŹ rearms by members of the general public,â€? Judge William Fletcher wrote in a 52-page opinion. Sheris in the two California counties had limited their permits to applicants showing “good causeâ€? to be armed, such as documented threats or working in a wide range of risky occupations. The ruling places the 9th
Circuit Court in line with other U.S. appellate courts that have upheld the right of oďŹƒcials in the states of New York, Maryland and New Jersey to deny concealed carry applications in certain cases. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2013, in the middle of a raging national debate on guns, declined to weigh in on whether ďŹ rearm owners have a constitutional right to carry co

Pope Francis will visit the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau during a visit to Poland on July 29, the Vatican said on Thursday. Both of Francis’s immediate predecessors, Pope Benedict, a German, and Pope John Paul, a Pole, also visited the site during their pontificates. Nazi German occupying forces established the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi camp during World War II in the southern Polish town of Oswiecim, around 43 miles from Poland’s second city, Krakow. The visit will take place during Francis’s pre-planned trip to Krakow for an international gathering of Catholic youth. Poland remains a staunchly Roman Catholic country.
Between 1940 and 1945, Auschwitz developed into a vast complex of barracks, workshops, gas chambers and crematoria, where about 1.5 million people, most of them Jews, died. Soviet Red Army troops liberated the camp on Jan. 27, 1945. During a visit to Rome’s synagogue in January, Francis appealed to Catholics to reject anti-Semitism and said the Holocaust, in which some six million Jews were killed, should remind everyone that human rights should be defended with “maximum vigilance. A month earlier, the Vatican issued a major document saying Catholics should not try to convert Jews. BRIEF After deadly Tel Aviv attack, Israel suspends Palestinian permits The Israeli military on Thursday revoked permits for 83,000 Palestinians to visit Israel and said it would send hundreds more troops to the occupied West Bank after a Palestinian gun attack that killed four Israelis in Tel Aviv. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault by two gunmen on Wednesday in a trendy shopping and dining market near Israel’s Defence Ministry, but Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups were quick to praise it.
The assailants came from near Hebron, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. They dressed in suits and ties and posed as customers at a restaurant, ordering a drink and a chocolate brownie before pulling out automatic weapons and opening ďŹ re, sending diners eeing in panic. Two women and two men were killed and six others were wounded. The attack followed a lull in recent weeks after what had been near-daily stabbings and shootings on Israeli streets. It was the deadliest single incident since an attack on a Jerusalem synagogue in November 2014 that killed ďŹ ve. REUTERS
Mask: Photographs by Frank Gimpaya
“#7
Inspired by postImpressionist Georges Seurat’s pointillist masterpiece “The Veil,” New Jersey-based photographer Gimpaya has created a series of black-and-white portraits of women wearing a plastic mask bought at a Halloween store. The photos — which question the notion of identity, assumptions of beauty and “the emotional projection from a half-hidden face” — will be on view at the Bronx Museum as part of a partnership with En Foco, a nonprofit that supports photographers of color and diverse cultural backgrounds. summer arts guide
Summer of the snapshot This season’s must-see museum and gallery shows pay homage to the art of photography. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri letters@metro.us
Shutterbugs, rejoice. In addition to a newly revamped International Center of Photography (see page 18), New York City has a plethora of exhibitions devoted to the art of the photo opening this summer. From celebrity snaps to arty portraits to documentary studies, here are some of the picture shows we’re looking forward to seeing.
Diane Arbus: In the Beginning The Met’s new outpost for modern art salutes one of the greatest, weirdest
and most tragic artists of the 20th century. “In the Beginning” features more than 100 photographs by Diane Arbus, tracing how she went from art-directing photo shoots with her husband for glossies like Vogue and Seventeen to creating provocative, idiosyncratic images of New York City’s eccentrics, circus performers, children, female impersonators and pedestrians. Many of these early works are being exhibited for the first time. July 12Nov. 27, The Met Breuer, 945 Madison Ave.
Nan Goldin: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency
Nan Goldin made her name in the 1970s and ’80s with her unflinchingly brutal snapshots chronicling the artist’s often volatile life in New
York City. Some 700 of these no-holds-barred images make up her magnum opus, “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency,” a kind of slideshow (but much more than that) featuring images of sex, drugs, violence and rock ‘n’ roll, including Goldin’s now-iconic self-portrait of her battered-andbruised face after being domestically abused. The Museum of Modern Art will show “The Ballad” in its original 35 mm presentation, featuring a soundtrack curated by the artist’s friends that ranges from opera singer Maria Callas to the Velvet Underground. June 11Feb. 12, 2017, MoMA, 11 W. 53rd St.

Danny Lyon: Message to the Future
The Whitney will host the first photo show in its new Meatpacking District home this summer: a survey of documentarystyle street photographer Danny Lyon. One of the genre’s leading figures of the New Journalism movement of the ’60s and ’70s, the Brooklyn-born Lyon finally gets his due, with 175 photos and related films and ephemera spanning from the ’60s to today. The show will look at the artist’s socially and politically motivated shots of outsiders and those living on the fringes of American society, from bikers and rebels to prisoners and outlaws to the poor and downtrodden. June 17-Sept. 25, Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort St.
“Marilyn Monroe, Tobay Beach, Long Island”
Marilyn Monroe and American Thoroughbred Chelsea’s Steven Kasher Gallery has two photo shows worth checking out this summer. “Andre de Dienes: Marilyn and California Nudes” mainly chronicles the Romanian photographer’s long professional and artistic relationship with Marilyn Monroe, whom he first captured on film before she found fame, when she was an innocent

California girl named Norma Jean Baker. The exhibition will also include De Dienes’ experimental nudes shot in California’s otherworldly desert landscape. Meanwhile, “Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred” will feature more than 25 large-scale photographs of America’s greatest racehorses, including American Pharoah, winner of the Triple Crown. June 9-July 29, Steven Kasher Gallery, 515 W. 26th St.
METRO.US WEEKEND, JUNE 10-12, 2016
18 SUMMER ARTS GUIDE
Ready for its close-up After a year-and-a-half away from the spotlight, the International Center of Photography debuts its new downtown digs. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri letters@metro.us
The International Center of Photography had almost everything: an esteemed pedigree (its founder, photojournalist Cornell Capa, was brothers with the legendary war photog Robert Capa), a permanent collection of more than 200,000 images from the likes of gritty tabloid shutterbug Weegee to art-world superstar Cindy Sherman, and some of the best, most ambitious exhibitions New York City had to offer, including surveys on greats like Richard Avedon and deep-dives into the political power of photography in documenting South Africa during apartheid or America in the Civil Rights era. But it was missing one thing: a lot of visitors. “That was one of the drawbacks of the midtown space,” says ICP
curator-in-residence Charlotte Cotton, about the museum’s former 42nd Street digs. “The area wasn’t associated with going to look at art and think about culture.” She’s hoping that’s about to change. On June 23 — a year and a half after closing its Bryant Park space — ICP will open its new home at 250 Bowery downtown with the exhibition “Private, Public, Secret” (though January 2017), featuring works by historic and contemporary artists examining the notion of privacy in an increasingly image-centric world, from Andy Warhol to Cindy Sherman to even Kim Kardashian (yes, she has a #selfie here). It’s an unabashedly modern show, which is fitting given its new neighbors include the New Museum across the street, as well as the 130 or so galleries that have popped up in the Lower East Side, a stone’s throw away. “When we lost our [midtown] lease, we wanted to find a space in an amazing cultural corridor of New York,” explains Cotton, saying that the museum’s new proximity to the burgeoning Lower East Side
art scene will likely draw more foot traffic. “We wanted to join a vibrant creative community.” The new steel-and-glass building does look more like a community center than an arts institution: It’s not ostentatiously weird, like the New Museum, or particularly sleek, like the revamped Whitney, and it certainly doesn’t have the stuffiness of more traditional manses-turned-museums like the Cooper Hewitt. 20 SUMMER ARTS GUIDE
How to make art happen Successful women — does Naomi Campbell ring a bell? — will share their stories at The Other Festival. LINDA LABAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
A woman might well be blazing a trail to the White House right now, but do women really have equal opportunity in the arts? According to Dee Poku, founder of the influential women’s leadership program WIE Network, the
answer is a resolute no, which is why she’s bringing some woman-to-woman wisdom on how to turn creativity from a hobby into a career at the firstever The Other Festival. “I’ve been hosting similar events for the past few years for WIE and seeing
self-starters in all areas flocking, looking for support,” she says. “That was the genesis for The Other Festival. It will bring female makers into one room where they get advice and inspiration from women in a similar position.”

And she’s gotten some big names to share their secrets to success: actress Rosario Dawson; Baked by Melissa founder Melissa Ben-Ishay; Stephanie Mark, aka The Coveteur; and model Naomi Campbell, among others. There will also be performances and talks from artists Justine Skye, Natalia Clavier (Thievery Corporation), Brooke Candy, Yuna and Chelsea Layland. Whether you’re a musician or painter, you are heading up a business — and businesswomen need to be just as creative outside of the studio, too. The Other Festival will mark the first in what the U.K.-born, New Yorkbased Poku hopes will be an annual event providing a platform for women in worlds of music, fashion, film, art, food, design and technology to share experiences on overcoming challenges. “I’m a big believer in creating your network to support your goals,” says Poku, speaking from Manhattan’s Spring Studios, where the event will be held. “Hearing other women’s process and how they overcome difficulties can be very empowering. “One thing we stress is that the speakers don’t

speak in broad platitudes — we need specifics and details about things like raising money for a business, or turning creativity into a livelihood.” Poku says she herself finds inspiration from all-female events: “The atmosphere is incredible. It’s like being with 50 girlfriends, only there are 500 like-minded women. Being all women totally changes the dynamic.” Still, in an ideal world she would be doing something else rather than organizing all-female networking events. “I wish we didn’t need these things, truly I do. But it’s born out by statistics,” Poku says of gender-based inequality. “I’d like to go out of business and not have these events. That would mean the culture has changed and women have equal opportunity.”

This Sunday, the 70th Tony Awards will be held at the Beacon Theatre — but don’t call it the #HamilTonys just yet. While “Hamilton” is certainly the buzzword on everyone’s lips, with a record-breaking 16 nominations, here’s a closer look at the important themes that will come into play throughout the night.
New sounds
Is diversity a trend?
One exciting trend has been new musical genres breaking onto Broadway stages. Pop artists like Cyndi Lauper (“Kinky Boots”) paved the way for Sara Bareilles (“Waitress”) and Edie Brickell (“Bright Star,” with Steve Martin) to make their mark outside of the jukebox musical model.
Originality rules

Will Sunday’s awards acknowledge shows about people of color? This strong season included “Eclipsed” (about the Second Liberian Civil War) and “Shuffle Along” (about the Great White Way’s first nonwhite hit). Yet George Takei’s “Allegiance,” a semi-autobiographical show about the actor’s childhood in a Japanese internment camp, received no nods. So we’ll have to see where the awards fall.

Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor is far more than a genre-melting electronic lothario. On his second solo effort, “Piano,â€? the British musician takes a break from wreaking dance floor havoc to deliver an LP that features a scaleddown Taylor singing over the heart-swelling instrumentals. The result is an album that is full of clear-eyed, cathartic intensity that revels in unhinged musicality.Â
“I’m not really sure whether or not I could have that impact on — I just knew that [making the album] was emotional for me, Taylor explains. “It’s really tricky subject matter and everyone will have a different response to it. Some people don’t feel anything at all; others feel a lot. But I want ‘Piano’ to have a deep impact. From the blistery opener “I’m Ready to the raw emotion of “In The Light of The Room, “Piano, out June 10 from Moshi Moshi, is Taylor’s most vulnerable project to date. However, he doesn’t seem too concerned with the feedback he’ll receive from loyal Hot Chip listeners.
“I don’t feel like I’m expecting a different response from fans because ‘Piano’ is barer and stripped back. I’m nervous for any record I make, not more so with this one, Taylor explains. “There’s not more of me on display — I just made a record that’s more revealing of the self. That’s what I tend to do and ‘Piano’ is a natural progression of where I’ve been. Although Taylor jumped into the making of “Piano with equal amounts of enthusiasm that he has for all of his records with Hot Chip, he acknowledges the difference in creative output. “We’ve been a collaboration for years, so the emotional input

about mystical magicians. What I love about it is it manages to be both incredibly beautiful and intelligent and reflective while at the same time gross and stupid and puerile. It bounces back and forth between those two happily. Anytime the movie starts getting too sincere or earnest, just

wait two seconds and the directors will find a way to undercut that. I think it’s an astonishing achievement. It’s honestly one of the things — if not the thing — I’m proudest of that I’ve done since “Potter. I may never be in something quite like that ever again. I don’t imagine I will be. I get the sense that, with every project you do, there has to be something, some idea, that really grabs you. What was it with “Now You See Me 2? The thing I was honestly most nerding out about was working with Michael Caine. That’s a life goal crossed off my list. He was everything I hope to be when I’m that age.
Most actors are really jaded. It’s a status thing that once you get to a certain level in the industry you don’t care or are above caring about the films you work on. Whereas he’s still having a great time, telling stories, chatting away, loving it. To me, it shows you don’t have to be jaded. You can do 100 movies and be at the top of your industry for 60 years and still be having a great time. You probably got great stories, too. His memoir is pretty slender, and you imagine he’s keeping most of the juicy stu out of the public eye. There are definitely some. I’m not going to tell tales out of school. But they were great.
Going Slytherin What about your character? This is your ďŹ rst real villain role. But he’s equally evil and pathetic. What I thought was interesting was his relationship to magic. It’s the dierence between the person who is happy to suspend his disbelief and somebody who wants to work rigorously to ďŹ gure out how the trick is done. My character, being someone who can’t do magic, is made to feel stupid by it. His whole identity is being the smartest guy in the room. As soon as someone makes him feel inadequate he has
to control or dominate it. That’s where his maniacal behavior comes from — as well as his deep loneliness and father issues. And it must be a trip to play a villain. Absolutely. There was something fun about not having to be mindful that the audience should like you or root for you. I could be as petulant and bratty as I wanted. It does feel like a rite of passage in terms of being a British guy playing a bad guy in an American movie. I was very happy to fulďŹ ll that.

Ecuador the heavy favorite over Haiti in Copa America tourney The Copa America soccer tournament continues this Sunday at MetLife Stadium. RICH SLATE @RichSlate
sports@metro.us
One thing is pretty much certain on Sunday night in Group B: Haiti’s (0-0-2) 2016 Copa America journey will be done after they meet Ecuador (0-2-0) at MetLife Stadium (6:30 p.m., Fox Sports 1) in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Haiti lost 1-0 to Peru in its opener last Saturday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, but it wasn’t a bad showing. Their fate was sealed though with Wednesday’s humbling 7-1 loss to Brazil (1-1-0) at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The Haitians will still have something to play for (beyond national pride) as Ecuador needs a win in order to advance to the quarterfinals. Ecuador has proven to be one of the hardest teams to figure out in this competition since they opened with an

impressive 0-0 tie with Brazil last Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. They followed that up with a puzzling 2-2 draw with Peru on Wednesday. Not
every point is the same since a tie with Brazil is a fine result any day of the week, but a draw with Peru is disappointing to a country like Ecuador.
Further complicating matters is the fact that Brazil meets Peru later that night (8:30, Fox Sports 1) at Gillette Stadium. So even if Ecuador takes care of their own
business and beats Haiti as they are expected to, they would still need some help from Brazil (a Peru upset would be fatal to Ecuador). Things could always be much bleaker
for Ecuador since they trailed 2-0 to Peru just 13 minutes into their match. Striker Enner Valencia cut it to 2-1 in the 39th minute (with their first goal of the tournament) and striker Miller Bolanos tied it up three minutes into the second half. Ecuadorian defender Gabriel Achilier received his second yellow card in the 93rd minute but it was too late to make much of a difference against Peru. When these groups were announced, most predicted Brazil to win Group B — with Ecuador coming in second-place. Ecuador comes from the powerful CONMEBOL federation (South America), was in the 2014 World Cup and is currently ranked No. 13 in the latest FIFA rankings. On the other side, Haiti is happy to gain this experience against such quality teams. The progress that they showed in the narrow loss to Peru was overshadowed by the beating inflicted by Brazil. They have a chance to hold their heads up high if they can tie or pull off a shocking win over Ecuador.
Mets take on Brewers, Yankees host Tigers This weekend the Mets travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers while the Yankees host the Detroit Tigers. Friday’s game between the Mets and Brewers will see the resurgent Matt Harvey (4-8, 4.95 ERA) taking the hill against Junior Guerra (31, 3.61 ERA). Harvey has rebounded from a poor start to the season by allowing just one earned run in his last 14 IP. This will be his first career start against Milwaukee. Logan Verrett (3-3, 3.41 ERA) makes a spot start on Saturday to prevent Steven Matz or Jacob deGrom from pitching on short rest (both were used in Tuesday’s doubleheader against Pittsburgh). Verrett was roughed up
in his last start on May 14 but it came at Coors Field; before that Verrett turned in back-to-back quality starts on April 13 and 19 (no runs allowed in 12 IP). The Mets’ batters have an opportunity for a much-needed outburst against Wily Peralta (3-7, 6.79 ERA), who takes the hill against them on Saturday. He has the worst ERA and WHIP (1.93) among qualified MLB starters. Curtis Granderson has been particularly successful in the past against Peralta (5-for-11 with two home runs).
Yankees - Tigers The Yankees will try to tame the Tigers in a threegame set this weekend. CC Sabathia (3-4, 2.58
Looking up Both the Mets and Yankees are looking up in the standings these days. The Mets (32-26) trailed the Nationals by 3.5 games as of Thursday and the Yankees were looking up at three teams in the AL East. The Yanks trailed first-place Baltimore by 6.5 games as of Thursday.
ERA) starts on Friday, and he had a control issue in his last start, surrendering six walks in just five frames against the Orioles on June 5. He’ll have to pay careful attention to Miguel Cabrera, who’s a .294 hitter against him (34 ABs) with two homers and 12 RBIs. Mike Pelfrey (1-5, 4.76 ERA) looks for his second
straight win on the mound, but he’ll have to rebound off a poor start against the Bombers on April 9 in which he allowed six runs on seven hits in less than four innings. Pelfrey has the fewest strikeouts among qualified starters, which should only aid a Yankees’ roster that has the fourth-fewest strikeouts in baseball. Masahiro Tanaka (3-1, 2.76 ERA) and Justin Verlander (5-5, 3.97 ERA) will get a chance to face off on Saturday night after having their Sunday Night Baseball matchup rained out on April 10. Tanaka has allowed just four earned runs in his last four starts, but is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA against Detroit in two career outings. ROBERT CRISCOLA

Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez, the trainer/ jockey combo behind Stradivari, teamed up for a win in the Belmont Stakes in 2007 with the filly Rags To Riches.

There may not be a Triple Crown on the line this year, but the Belmont Stakes (6 p.m., NBC) still promises to be a very exciting race. It drew a competitive field of 13, but here are the three horses you should be watching for when the field is sent on its way Saturday.
Governor Malibu
Exaggerator (Post Position: 11, Odds: 9-5) Exaggerator won’t offer generous odds having just won the Preakness Stakes three weeks ago, especially after the defection of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist due to sickness, but he will be tough to beat Saturday. Exaggerator’s credentials are overwhelming, as he’s won four graded stakes in his career (two this year), and figures to handle the testing mile-and-ahalf distance of the Belmont Stakes based on pedigree (he’s by Curlin, who ran second in this race in 2007 en route to becoming the richest

Desormeaux has one Belmont Stakes win to his credit; it came aboard Summer Bird in 2009. The one knock against Exaggerator might be his post, but he should have enough time to drop back and cross over toward the rail before the first

Stradivari (Post Position: 5, Odds: 5-1) Stradivari was a wild card going into the Preakness Stakes; he had never run in a
stakes race before, but was coming off two straight romps against lesser competition. He was a little hard to control early and suffered a wide trip partially due to his outside post, but his effort was commendable; he was fourth beaten four lengths. That
(Post Position: 1, Odds: 12-1) Governor Malibu will have to improve a bit from a speed figure standpoint, but this 12-1 shot has a lot going for him in this race. He was a fast-closing second in last month’s mile-andan-eighth Peter Pan Stakes, the traditional prep at Belmont for the crown jewel of their spring/summer meet. His running style suggests he’ll improve with added distance, as does his pedigree. He’s by Malibu Moon, a noted distance influence, whose sire was 1992 Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy. Governor Malibu will be represented by the same connections that won the 2014 Belmont Stakes with Tonalist; jockey Joel Rosario and trainer Christophe Clement.
