WIND-TOSSED BEACH UMBRELLA KILLS VIRGINIA WOMAN

1

A wind-driven beach umbrella struck and killed a 55-year-old woman in Virginia Beach, Virginia, local police said. The woman, Lottie Michelle Belk, of Chester, Virginia, was hit when a strong gust of wind tossed the anchored umbrella across the sand on Wednesday afternoon, Virginia Beach police said in a statement. Belk was struck in the torso and went into cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel transported her to a hospital, where she died, the statement said. “There is no evidence of foul play,” police said. Virginia Beach is about 110 miles south of Washington, D.C.

CALIFORNIA AG SLAMS SENTENCE IN STANFORD SEX ASSAULT CASE

2

California Attorney General Kamala Harris, the leading Senate candidate from the state, has joined the outpouring of criticism against a six-month jail sentence given to a former Stanford University swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. Harris, speaking to reporters in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday, said she was concerned that the “victim’s voice was not heard” at the trial. “It was not respected, and she was not given dignity in the process,” said Harris, a Democrat, according to video from a local television station. With the comments, Harris has become the most high-profile elected official in California to question the sentence for former Stanford student Brock Turner, 20, last week by a Santa Clara Superior Court judge. Prosecutors had asked for a six-year prison term. REUTERS

SOURCE: VERIZON’S BID FOR YAHOO’S WEB ASSETS TOPPED BY OTHERS

Verizon Communications did not submit the highest offer this week in the second round of bidding for Yahoo Inc.’s core internet assets, according to a person familiar with the matter. No committed financing was required for second-round bids, and Yahoo will put together in the coming days a new shortlist of bidders from which it will solicit binding offers, the person added. Yahoo and Verizon offered no immediate comment. Earlier on Thursday, CNBC reported, citing sources, that Verizon’s bid of more than $3.5 billion was topped by multiple offers at or above $5 billion. It did not name the parties that made those offers. REUTERS

The Philadelphia Pride Parade has come a long way. Now in its 28th year, the Pride Parade’s roots are in what many identify as the first gay pride protest in the nation: a July 4, 1965, protest at Independence Mall, where about 40 gay Philadelphians marched with signs demanding equal rights. They returned for several years in an event named the “Annual Reminders.” And 50 years later, in the summer of 2015, the legalization of gay

marriage by the U.S. Supreme Court was celebrated at the same location — with the lead plaintiff in that historic lawsuit, John Obergefell, on site for the occasion. Ironically, legal samesex marriage had already come to Pennsylvania a year earlier after a federal judge’s decision. The Pride Parade in 2014 saw 13 couples wed in a mass wedding ceremony on Independence Mall led by two city judges. So what else is there to be said? For South Philly activist, model and musician Cory Wade, 25, who has been on “America’s Next Top Model” numerous times, the legacy of the Pride Parade is still just as important for the many LGBT people who may not be in a welcoming environment. “When I was coming to grips with my sexuality and when I was first

feels like they don’t fit in. They know everybody who is in their corner is going to be there on that date. That’s what it was for me.” Despite the significance of Pride for Wade, he won’t be attending this year, choosing to get his tan on at the Shore instead. “I think you should always be walking proud,” Wade said. “I wear my pride every single day. I don’t need an event to give me the permission to do that.” But maybe that’s a sign of how far the Pride Parade has come — people know that it has become its own established institution in Philadelphia. “That’s what people have been fighting for so long. I don’t think awareness should be taken away,” Wade said. “There’s still so much work to be done.”

Philadelphia City Council may formally condemn Trump A resolution introduced at City Council Thursday seeks for a formal condemnation of Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s campaign for president. “As the birthplace of American democracy, it is incumbent upon the city of Philadelphia to declare that the politics of division are unacceptable and to stand up for the values of inclusion and equality,” said Councilwoman-atLarge Helen Gym, who introduced the resolution, in a statement. As Trump prepares to face off against Democrat Hillary Clinton, he has continued to face intense criticism

from most major media outlets — most recently over his comments about the MexicanAmerican judge han-

dling a lawsuit against Trump University. The resolution, if passed, will state that Philly “hereby condemns the racist, sexist, xenophobic and antiAmerican values that have been espoused by Donald Trump during his bid for the United States presidency, which are at odds with the deeply held values of the city of Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection.” The resolution will return to council for a vote on final passage on June 16. OPINION

DESPERATION, LIES AND SODA … PHILLY GOT BAMBOOZLED I had a crazy dream Wednesday night. I was wearing a Sixers jersey running across a bridge with a crew of my West Philly neighbors dumping tons of soda down the Schuylkill River. It was like the Boston Tea Party, except we were black. And then I woke up, cursed out loud at how I wish such a response would work in 2016 and went back to bed. Philadelphia will likely become the first major U.S. city to tax — 1.5 cents an ounce — sugary beverages. For every average 12-ounce can of either regular or diet soda, Philadelphians can expect to pay an additional 18 cents. Sigh.

THE ERNEST OPINION

ERNEST OWENS @MrErnestOwens

On Wednesday, the majority of the City Council gave Mayor Jim Kenney their blessing on a soda tax — but on the condition that it be reduced to half of his initial 3-cents-per-ounce proposal. However, Kenney didn’t get this approval by making a passionate appeal for funding universal pre-K or other community programs — he struggled with that. Instead, out of the sky came the announcement that some of the soda-tax income would

go to the city’s general fund in early years. Fun fact: Kenney’s administration never said anything about the tax going toward the city’s struggling fund. Translation: Once this soda tax drops, pre-K and other recreational plans just might have to wait a few years before they get the full benefit initially promised. You just don’t drop a bomb like that at the 11th hour unless you feel as though you’re going to sink. With all of the proposals brought up surrounding property taxes, container taxes and plans to ax the soda tax initiative altogether, Kenney knew it would be easy for his proposal to fall short of

the votes. It became clear his administration pulled a fast one, and the City Council compromised out of fear of appearing ruthless to the firstterm mayor’s initial budget. “I hope in the future we get full disclosure,” said Councilman Bill Greenlee to Kenney’s finance director, Rob Dubow, during the Wednesday budget hearings. “We should have brought it up earlier,” Dubow pathetically replied. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows such a major detail doesn’t “accidentally” get left out of the conversation. This was a trap, a political set-up to force City Council to

Philly soda drinkers are about to pay 1.5 cents more per ounce GETTY IMAGES

relinquish power. With the city’s crazy pension costs, rising labor costs and development contracts, the Council wasn’t going to fight a budget that was intended to largely address that. So the soda tax, initially pitched as a progressive education policy move, now looks more like a funding

buffer. In other words, progressives got bamboozled. At this point, how can we seriously trust how this money will be spent in the long-term? The deception is real, and my soda is going to get taxed. I might as well stock up now before the apocalypse.

The casket of Muhammad Ali arrives for an Islamic Funeral Prayer service at the Kentucky Exposition Center on Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky. GETTY IMAGES

Thousands gather for Muslim funeral honoring Muhammad Ali An estimated 14,000 people, representing many races and creeds, attended the jenazah, or funeral in Arabic. A Muslim funeral for Muhammad Ali on Thursday drew thousands of admirers to the boxer’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, where mourners prayed over the body

of a man who battled in the ring and sought peace outside it. Ali, a three-time heavyweight champion known for his showmanship, political activism and devotion to humanitarian causes, died on Friday of septic shock in an Arizona hospital. He was 74. “The passing of Muhammad Ali has made us all feel a little more alone in the world, said Sherman Jackson, a Mus-

lim scholar at the University of Southern California. â€œSomething solid, something big, beautiful and life-affirming has left this world,â€? he said of a man who was forced to give up more than three years of boxing at the height of his career for his refusal to serve in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. Jackson praised Ali for advancing the cause of black Americans dur-

ing and after the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Others admired him for making Islam more acceptable and giving U.S. Muslims a hero they could share with the American mainstream. Imam Zaid Shakir, a founder of Muslim liberal arts school Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California, led worshippers in prayers such as “Allahu akbar (“God is greatest) over Ali’s body, which lay

in a casket covered with a black and gold cloth. Ali and his family planned his funeral for 10 years, making sure it would honor his Muslim faith while also adapting to the demands of Western media-driven culture. He was due to be buried on Friday, after a funeral procession and before one final goodbye when thousands more will gather for an interfaith service. REUTERS

US pilot examiners get more mental health training after Germanwings crash Medical examiners who evaluate airline pilots have received more training in detecting mental health problems, U.S. regulators said on Thursday, after reviewing procedures in the wake of last year’s deadly Germanwings crash caused by a co-pilot who suered from severe depression. The Federal Aviation Administration stopped short of calling for formal psychological tests on pilots. That step was recommended for new pilots in Europe after the March 2015 incident, in which a Germanwings plane crashed into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board. The FAA said it will help airlines and unions expand support networks for pilots such as conďŹ dential hotlines, and integrate these into airlines’ safety management programs. The decisions, which followed recommendations by a government-industry task force, underscore the challenge of making pilots feel comfortable disclosing health issues, despite risking a required medical leave or an end to their careers. US appeals court: No constitutional right to concealed guns Firearm owners have no constitutional right to carry a concealed gun in public, a divided U.S. appeals court in California ruled on Thursday, upholding the right of officials to only grant permits to those facing a specific danger. The decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a victory for gun control advocates which sets a legal precedent in western states, was seen as unlikely to be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court in the near future. The San Franciscobased court, in a 7-4 decision, found California’s San Diego and Yolo counties did not violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects the right to bear arms, when they

Handguns on display GETTY IMAGES

denied some applicants a concealed firearm license. “We hold that the Second Amendment does not protect, in any degree, the carrying of concealed firearms by members of the general public, Judge William Fletcher wrote in a 52-page opinion. Sheriffs in the two California counties had limited their permits to applicants showing “good cause to be armed, such as documented threats or working in a wide range of risky occupations.

The ruling places the 9th Circuit Court in line with other U.S. appellate courts that have upheld the right of officials in the states of New York, Maryland and New Jersey to deny concealed carry applications in certain cases. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2013, in the middle of a raging national debate on guns, declined to weigh in on whether firearm owners have a constitutional right to carry concealed guns. The 9th Circuit Court’s opinion noted the Supreme Court had not answered the question of whether the Second Amendment ensures a right to carry firearms openly, as opposed to concealed under clothing.Â

President Obama formally endorses Clinton for president President Obama says he’s ‘fired up’ for Hillary Clinton, urges Democrats to unite. President Barack Obama formally endorsed Hillary Clinton’s White House bid on Thursday and called for the Democratic Party to unite behind her after a protracted battle with Bernie Sanders for the party nomination. Clinton said it “means the world to her that Obama has her back to beat Trump. The endorsement increases pressure on Sanders, a senator from Vermont, to concede the race so the party can focus on campaigning against Donald Trump, the Republican pre-

sumptive nominee for the Nov. 8 election. “It is absolutely a joy and an honor that President Obama and I, over the years, have gone from fierce competitors to true friends, Clinton told Reuters in an inter-

view. Obama defeated Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary and she went on to serve as secretary of state in his first term. Obama, who enjoys strong approval ratings

after nearly eight years in office, will campaign with Clinton next week in Wisconsin, her campaign said. “I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office, President Obama

said of Clinton in a video. “I’m with her. I am fired up, and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary, Obama said. Obama had been expected to support Clinton since she won enough delegates this week to clinch the Democratic nomination and become the first woman to lead a major U.S. party as its presidential nominee. Sanders, who met with Obama at the White House earlier on Thursday, said afterward he would work with Clinton to defeat Trump. Sanders said, however, that he would stay in the race to compete in the final Democratic primary vote in Washington, D.C., on June 14.

Sources: Clinton ally Warren weighs potential VP role, sees hurdles Sen. Elizabeth Warren has considered the idea of serving as Hillary Clinton’s running mate but sees obstacles to that choice as she prepares to endorse the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, several people familiar with Warren’s thinking told Reuters. While her thinking could evolve, Warren has concerns about joining a Clinton ticket, including the question of whether running two women would give the Democrats the best shot at defeating Republican Donald Trump, one source said. Advisers to Warren, a ďŹ ery critic of Wall Street and a popular ďŹ gure among progressive Democrats, have been in close contact with Clinton’s campaign team and the conversations have increased in frequency in recent weeks, the sources said. Warren has signaled to people close to her that she is intrigued by the possibility of being Clinton’s No. 2 but has not discussed the role with Clinton, 68, or anyone else from her campaign, the people said.

1, 2, 3 — CLINTON LOSES? First female presumptive nominee for a major political party! Glass ceiling cracked! Thank you America! For Hillary Clinton, this was a drop-mic-walk-away week. Despite all the haters, the alleged “vast right wing conspiracy,” and a talent for making statements she later has to clarify, she has made history. And now the numbers say this is Clinton’s race to lose. If she holds onto all the states Barack Obama won in 2012, she wins big. If she can add one or two — like Arizona or Georgia — it’s a landslide. And if Donald Trump keeps saying things so nutty even his Republican allies run to hide, the electorate may give her the White House plus a year of free cable with HBO. “Come in here, Bill, Khaleesi is riding toward Winterfell!” So what could go wrong? Plenty. 1. Trump gets his groove back In the Republican primary, the billionaire from New York chewed up challengers like a feral cat. He has a knack for picking damning nicknames, staging surprise attacks, grabbing populist themes and turning his lack of experience into a platinum-plated qualification for office — all of which could be

lawyerly answers all feed the idea that she can’t be trusted — which still holds the potential of incinerating her at the polls. 3. The economy … or terrorism Or something else. Clinton says she’ll continue the legacy of Obama. That’s fine as long as enough voters feel good about that. But let the recovery stall, or let gas prices jump, or let terrorists strike and look out … . As much as Democrats should feel good (and Republicans dismayed) about her chances right now, it is important to remember Clinton was the choice of the party elites in 2008 until Barack Obama — a neophyte — outmaneuvered her, ignited the voting public and burned her campaign to the ground. In other words, it was already once her race to lose. And she found a way.

Pope Francis will visit the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau during a visit to Poland on July 29, the Vatican said on Thursday. Both of Francis’s immediate predecessors, Pope Benedict, a German, and Pope John Paul, a Pole, also visited the site during their pontificates. Nazi German occupying forces established the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi camp during World War II in the southern Polish town of Oswiecim, around 43 miles from Poland’s second city, Krakow. The visit will take place during Francis’s pre-planned trip to Krakow for an international gathering of Catholic youth. Poland remains a staunchly Roman Catho-

lic country. Between 1940 and 1945, Auschwitz developed into a vast complex of barracks, workshops, gas chambers and crematoria, where about 1.5 million people, most of them Jews, died. Soviet Red Army troops liberated the camp on Jan. 27, 1945. During a visit to Rome’s synagogue in January, Francis appealed to Catholics to reject antiSemitism and said the Holocaust, in which some six million Jews were killed, should remind everyone that human rights should be defended with “maximum vigilance.â€? A month earlier, the Vatican issued a major document saying Catholics should not try to convert Jews. BRIEF After deadly Tel Aviv attack, Israel suspends Palestinian permits The Israeli military on Thursday revoked permits for 83,000 Palestinians to visit Israel and said it would send hundreds more troops to the occupied West Bank after a Palestinian gun attack that killed four Israelis in Tel Aviv. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault by two gunmen on Wednesday in a trendy shopping and dining market near Israel’s Defence Ministry, but Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups were quick to praise it. The assailants came from near Hebron, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. They dressed in suits and ties and posed as customers at a restaurant, ordering a drink and a chocolate brownie before pulling out automatic weapons and opening ďŹ re, sending diners eeing in panic. Two women and two men were killed and six others were wounded. The attack followed a lull in recent weeks after what had been near-daily stabbings and shootings on Israeli streets. It was the deadliest single incident since an attack on a Jerusalem synagogue in November 2014 that killed ďŹ ve. REUTERS

Space 1026 brings you Philly’s future The new exhibition presents what Philly could be like in the year 2076. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

KRISTA DEDRICK LAI

Everyone says that they’d like to predict the future, but few people actually take the extra step and do so, physicalizing that vision with hard product. Space 1026 — the always playfully quirky DIY collective and gallery

in Chinatown — put out an open call this winter to Philly city artists of all mediums with one goal in mind: to describe Philadelphia in the year 2076, to imagine what this city would or could be like 60 years from the present.

Created in January by Conrad Benner (of Streets Dept. Blog) and Space 1026 members Ryan Beck and Miriam Singer, the exhibition would look for everything from post-apocalyptic nightmares and potential environmental meltdowns to dreamlike new versions of the same-old-same-old. “We wanted to bring in outside voices,” says Singer. “We asked for 2-D work hang-ready and wanted to have a variety of artwork and varied responses to the theme.” Steering away from work that Benner said might be “overly literal,” the trio wanted its exhibit’s viewers of to leave the show with “images and ideas of Philadelphia in the year 2076 dancing in their heads.” Over 30 Philadelphia artists delivered work to the curators’ call, abstract in nature and varied in form. When asked her idea of what Philadelphia 2076 might look like, collective member/sketch comedian

summer arts guide

Rose Luardo joked that she would be nothing but “fingernails and heads floating in Vaseline and fed with sugar water, coming to life when anyone needs to know what the ye olde days of Space 1026 looked like.” Havertown native Terri Fry Kasuba works in acrylic paint on paper. The first thought that popped into her head when posed with the challenge of future Philadelphia was of a dystopian landscape: “As I thought about it more, my perspective is more optimistic than that,” she says. She considered what Philadelphians are doing now to save the environment such as upcycling and urban gardens — “things that are natural and that we can have a say in.” She created “Floating City” and envisioned the long history of Philadelphia’s Boat House Row and crew racing, but because of global warming, people have devised a way for the city

to float above it all: “People are growing gardens on the roofs of historic row houses. People are adapting to their environment,” she adds. Heather Sundquist, a painter formerly of West Philly, crafts mostly with gouache with the majority of her work relative to nostalgia and memory. Now living in Austin, Texas, when she heard about the 1026 show, she looked back on her years in Philly and chose symbols representing her favorite moments. Space 1026’s Beck says the gallery is excited about the interpretations they've received for the exhibition. “We want people to wake up tomorrow thinking about how all their personal daily decisions end up painting our collective future; to be excited for the future; to fear the future; to build the future thoughtfully.” Philadelphia 2076 runs until June 25 at Space 1026, 1026 Arch St., 2nd Floor, space1026.org

B.o.B. doesn’t care that you think he’s a ‘dumbass’ I got a text one day and it said, “I know you’re probably not going to believe me, but this is Taylor Swift.” CHLOE TSANG @itschloet

Bobby Ray Simmons Jr., who goes by the stage name B.o.B, wants the world to know that he doesn’t care what you think of him. The Georgia-born rapper became internet famous back in January after posting a series of tweets insisting the world is flat. “Some people think I’m a disinformation agent, and some people just think I’m a dumbass,” he tells us. “I really don’t care what people get or what they take from me.” B.o.B is halfway

through his “STFU” tour with fellow rappers Scotty ATL and London Jae. We spoke with the 27-year-old just before his show in Spokane. You’ve had quite the year. How do you think you’ve evolved from your experiences? You have to remain a student. In martial arts, even the master has to be a student. You can’t ever feel like you know everything and you’ve got it all the way figured out. Because if you do that, you’ll never reinvent yourself. It’s like you memorialize yourself by not growing. Are you working on any new music or projects? Right now, I’m working on the “STFU” [tour]. London and Scotty are on the roll. We’re just going in, state to state,

recording — recording on the bus, recording in the bathroom, recording backstage, everywhere. And we sort of just throw these things together and put it out. When do you think that project will come out? Probably by the end of the tour. Maybe Independence Day. I don’t know. I’m just talking out of the side of my neck now, but we’re working. Have you changed as a musician in the past couple of

years? I’ve been all over the place throughout my whole career. It’s all a result of me trying to perfect my craft or perfect myself. I’m not afraid to let myself do what I want to do. I’m making songs with country artists to playing guitar, singing, whatever. Not to sound cliché, but I like new things, especially in a world where all I do is see new things and go to new places. It becomes a challenge to really appreciate the things that people don’t appreciate. On that note, can you tell me about “Both of Us,” the 2012 duet you did with Taylor Swift? I got a text one day and

it said, “I know you’re probably not going to believe me, but this is Taylor Swift.” She said she got [my number] from Hayley [Williams, of Paramore] and she wanted me to come out to perform. I got to Dallas, she sang the hook to “Airplanes,” and that night, I played her “Both of Us.” She was like “Oh my God, I love this, we have to do this.” We ended up doing the song, so I [joined] her on-set again in Atlanta. The Cowboys Stadium holds like 80,000 people. If you’ve never heard 80,000 6-year-old girls screaming at the top of their lungs, there’s nothing that sounds like that. You have to wear ear plugs. Have you kept in touch with her? I stay cool with everybody. Some not as close as others,

but I’m always looking to meet new people. Has your huge social media presence affected your ability to write or make music? First off, social media used to be called “new” media. Now it’s just “regular,” and having a smartphone and Twitter account, all that is normal. It’s become so integrated that it’s hard not to combine the social media presence with your music — you can’t ignore it. I can’t ignore my social presence because I’m so vocal on the internet. You remember in the ’90s, we found out about s—t from the news or a little news insert in between music videos? That was it. Now, when it comes to culture, everything is so instant. If something becomes a trend anywhere in the world, it’s instantly anybody’s trend.

The Resource Exchange to put on a 3 Ring Circus in Kensington The event will feature acrobats, live music, food trucks and more. KARYN GERRED @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

With an industrial warehouse full of bits and pieces of movie and theater props, The Resource Exchange can feel a bit like a cluttered circus on a normal day. The local creative reuse nonprofit, which resells items and materials from film and theater productions as well as other artistic endeavors, will take that idea to its logical conclusion on Friday by hosting a “3 Ring Circus” fundraiser at their Kensington headquarters. The event will feature live music by West Philly Orchestra and theatrical folk duo Chickabiddy, acrobatic performances by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre and Tribe of Fools’ Terry Brennan, an outdoor screening of the classic Charlie Chaplin film “The Circus,” along with food trucks and beer provided by St. Benjamin Brewing Company. We discussed the organization’s mission and this weekend’s big event with Executive Director Karyn Gerred. Why the circus as a

theme for your fundraiser? KG: We were brainstorming about a good celebratory theme, and as part of that the idea of the three R’s — reduce, reuse, recycle — somehow led to the notion of three rings. A number of people who are part of our network are also performers and theater artists, so it seemed like a ready-made theme for us. Where did the idea for The Resource Exchange come from? KG: I was a scenic painter for film and theater, and unless you’re in the business you really don’t see the waste that goes along with art production of any kind. You have many months to plot out and build the sets and usually a week or two to take them all down, so the speed of typical production calendars means you just get rid of the stuff once the productions are over. We started out in 2009 in a corner of one of the industrial buildings at the Navy Yard without plumbing or electricity or running water and slowly grew from there. Who are the customers for these theatrical castoffs? KG: It’s like a thrift store for the arts. A lot of our

donors and customers overlap. Typically it trickles down to folks who don’t have huge Hollywood budgets: local theater, classrooms and theater departments. But we also enable visual artists and art students to come in and get sketchbooks with some pages missing or half-used tubes of paint, things that would have ended up in a landfill. What are some of the more unusual items that have been donated? KG: We have a train car from the Walnut Street Theatre’s production of “White Christmas” that’s now a store fixture. The painting of Rocky Balboa from “Creed” is out front, but we’re not going to sell it because it gets so much attention. People jump out of their cars and take selfies with Sly all day. You never really know what you’re going to find here.

What are three things you can’t leave home without?

JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

When Jason O’Neill was 7, he watched the Eurovision Song Contest when a number called “Riverdance” came on. “The world hadn’t seen Irish dancing in this context before,” recalls the dancer. “It was cool and interesting and exhilarating and I remember wanting to become apart of it as a child.” O’Neill says it was “a dream come true” when he eventually joined the high-energy theatrical experience — now celebrating its 20th anniversary with a world tour — six years ago. We chatted with the now-29-year-old about the show’s history, new

to Philadelphia. When did you first start dancing? I have six sisters. Big Irish family and they all danced. I was always reluctant to get involved but one day I went with them to dance class and I stayed. And I’ve stayed for over 20 years now!

[Laughs] All Jason O’Neill my sisters quit and I developed this passion for the music and the rhythm. It was on a whim as a child and blossomed into what I do full-time now. Was there ever a stigma back when you were a kid about being a male

dancer? Absolutely. When I was growing up, I used to be really embarrassed and I was really secretive about it. For me now, there’s no stigma. I’m so proud of it. It’s very athletic and we get to travel the world. We get to perform in all the best cities and best theaters.

“Riverdance” is so high energy. How do you keep from getting sore performing all those back-to-back shows? I train like an athlete. I watch other sports and follow what they do in terms of what they eat and how they condition their bodies. Some cast members work with personal trainers, some swim and run, but everyone has their niche with what works for them. Anything you’re excited about coming to Philadelphia? I’ve been once in 2012 and it was my first time as a lead dancer with “Riverdance.” I love Reading Terminal Market and the old colonial buildings. Riverdance will be running at the Kimmel Center from Tuesday, June 14 to Sunday, June 19. For more information, visit: kimmelcenter.org

‘Bellows Falls’ celebrates the memory of Leah Stein resurrects her dance piece just in time for Father’s Day. SHAUN BRADY @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

produced for last year’s Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Leah Stein Dance Company is reviving the piece just in time for Father’s Day. While “Bellow Falls” will be performed in the company’s regular rehearsal space, the Iron Factory in Kensington, it’s as site-specific a work as those she’s created for Eastern State Peniten-

tiary or Historic Rittenhouse Town. Located on the top floor of a former early-20th-century factory, the space features old brick showing through faded, cracked and peeling green paint, the sounds of traffic streaming through the windows on all four sides. “One of my father’s favorite subjects was industrial decay,” Stein said

recently before a rehearsal. “When I came into the studio for the first time after he died I really felt him here. By the end, his mind and spirit were strong but his body gave out. His physicality was so fragile and compromised, and being with him so much in that state definitely influenced me. I didn’t want to run around or jump or hop.

When she was a young girl, Leah Stein celebrated one memorable birthday onboard a train. Looking back at a film of the party recently, she saw her younger self and a group of friends dancing at the train station and realized that day marked the first of many site-specific dances. It also provided her a fond memory of sharing a passion with her father, Dale Stein, a visual artist who loved and often painted steam locomotives. Stein’s latest dance piece, “Bellows Falls,” is named for another train station — this one not far from her parents’ home in Vermont, where Dale Stein passed away in February 2015. Originally

Thoughts on the 70th Tonys

Here’s what everyone will be talking about on Broadway’s biggest night. T. MICHELLE MURPHY @TMichelleMurphy

This Sunday, the 70th Tony Awards will be held at the Beacon Theatre — but don’t call it the #HamilTonys just yet. While “Hamilton is certainly the buzzword on everyone’s lips, with a recordbreaking 16 nominations, here’s a closer look at the important themes that will come into play throughout the night.

Back at the Beacon

THE FUN STARTS HERE

This year’s broadcast will look a bit different, because the show has moved back from Radio City Music Hall to the Beacon Theatre, where it was staged in 2011 and 2012. As a smaller space, the venue offers a great deal of charm and intimacy, which is bound to change how the production numbers are presented. Plus, the show will be emceed by firsttimer James Corden, host of “The Late Late Show.

Is diversity a trend? It’s wonderful that “Hamilton deliberately chose a multiracial cast

to tell its story. But will Sunday’s awards acknowledge shows about people of color? This strong season included “Eclipsed (about the Second Liberian Civil War) and “Shuffle Along (about the Great White Way’s first nonwhite hit). “The Color Purple and “Fiddler on the Roof are also powerful revivals for minority voices. Yet George Takei’s “Allegiance, a semi-autobiographical show about the actor’s childhood in a Japanese internment camp, received no nods. So we’ll have to see where the awards fall.

Originality rules It’s been an exciting season for new shows. “Hamilton, yes, but also “The Humans, “King George III and “Bright Star, among others. We’re eager to see which new shows will be rewarded against the similarly strong tide of revivals and adaptations.

New sounds One exciting trend has been new musical genres breaking onto Broadway stages. Pop artists like Cyndi Lauper (“Kinky Boots) paved the way for Sara Bareilles (“Waitress) and Edie Brickell (“Bright Star, with Steve Martin) to make their mark outside of the jukebox musical model.

A youthful season “Hamilton has drawn

The play’s the thing “Hamilton may have a presumptive lock on the musical categories, but it’s also been an exceptionally strong season for plays, with “The Humans, a mood play about a dysfunctional family, widely considered a shoo-in. There were also two avant garde Arthur Miller pieces directed by Belgium’s Ivo Van Hove (“A View From the Bridge, “The Crucible), plus the innovative speculative future play “King George III.

Looking ahead It’s going to be telling how much the Tonys address the future of Broadway — whether it’s previewing new shows or discussing how the industry is adapting to new audiences. This broadcast will reveal whether the Broadway community will write off “Hamilton as a fluke, or use it to justify taking new risks. (SBOJUF $06/5&35014 JOTUBMMFE

younger audiences to Broadway. But will they see anything else? When it comes to playwrights, all four 2016 Best Play nominees were written by talents under 40. And it’s just been announced that “Dear Evan Hansen — a show about an awkward teen written by Benj Pasek, 30, and Justin Paul, 31, that sold out its downtown run — will hit Broadway in 2017. Daniel Radcliffe, front and centerish, plays the villain in the sequel “Now You See Me 2.” JAY MAIDMENT

Daniel Radcliffe nerds out Daniel Radcliffe can be excitable. The actor has spent his post-“Harry Potter” life trying out new things, doing projects that get him worked up, from the rom-com “What If” to the oddball horror film “Horns.” Radcliffe has two films out soon. One is “Now You See Me 2,” the sequel to the surprise 2013 hit about mystical magicians. (He plays the main villain: a rich kid — the son of Michael Caine’s character, as it were — who wants to use our heroic foursome for grand larceny.) But he can’t help talking about “Swiss

Army Man,” too, the Sundance puzzler, hitting theaters July 1, in which he plays a semisentient corpse that farts a lot.

“Swiss Army Man” has a strong buzz as a movie that’s quite deep and moving considering it’s about a farting corpse. What I love about it is it manages to be both incredibly beautiful and intelligent and reflective while at the same time gross and stupid and puerile. It bounces back and forth between those two happily. Anytime the movie starts getting too sincere or earnest, just wait two seconds and the directors will find a way to undercut that. I think it’s an astonishing achievement. It’s honestly one of the things — if not the thing — I’m proudest of that I’ve done since “Potter.” I may never be in something quite like that ever again. I don’t imagine I will be.

I get the sense that, with every project you do, there has to be something, some idea, that really grabs you. What was it with “Now You See Me 2”? The thing I was honestly most nerding out about was working with Michael Caine. That’s a life goal crossed off my list. He was everything I hope to be when I’m that age. Most actors are really jaded. It’s a status thing that once you get to a certain level in the industry you don’t care or are above caring about the films you work on. Whereas he’s still having a great time, telling stories, chatting away, loving it. To me, it shows you don’t have to be jaded. You can do 100 movies and be at the top of your industry for 60 years and still be having a great time. You probably got great stories, too. His memoir is pretty slender, and you imagine he’s keeping most of the juicy stuff out of the public eye. There are definitely some. I’m not going to tell tales out of school. But they were great.

Copa America: Team USA plays for second place in Philly The United States can advance with a win or tie at the Linc Saturday. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

Second-place in Group A will be decided on Saturday night (7 p.m., Fox Sports 1) as the United States (1-0-1) takes on Paraguay (0-1-1) at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. Colombia (2-0-0) wrapped up first-place with its 2-1 defeat of Paraguay on Tuesday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Earlier that evening, the U.S. thrashed Costa Rica (0-1-1) 4-0 at Soldier Field in Chicago which means that all the Americans need to advance on Saturday is a tie against Paraguay.

Four dierent Americans scored in their win against Costa Rica Tuesday, including Clint Dempsey.

After losing to Colombia 2-0 in its opener last Friday, the United States couldn’t have asked for a much better response against Costa Rica. Sud-

denly their goal-differential of minus-2 was flipped around to plus-2. Just as important, the team regained its confidence as they sprinted

GETTY IMAGES

out to a three-goal lead in the first half and cruised to an unexpectedly easy victory over their CONCACAF rivals (their largest margin of defeat

ever vs. Costa Rica). Four different guys scored goals for the Americans as midfielder Clint Dempsey, midfielder Jermaine Jones and Bobby Wood all found the back of the net in the first 42 minutes. Substitute midfielder Graham Zusi added the final tally in garbage time. Paraguay had a scoreless draw with Costa Rica in its opener last Saturday so clearly goal-scoring has been an issue for them. Expect Paraguay to be desperate from the first minute on Saturday since they know that nothing but their best effort of the tournament will get them past the U.S. and into next week’s quarterfinals. The explosive Colombian offense jumped ahead 2-0 in the first 30 minutes of their match with Paraguay finally getting on the scoresheet in the 71st

minute as midfielder Victor Ayala scored on a longdistance blast (one of the top goals of the 2016 Copa America thus far). Fellow midfielder Oscar Romero thwarted the comeback attack for Paraguay shortly thereafter though as he picked up a pair of yellow cards in the span of three minutes, forcing his team to play down a man the rest of the way. Still, Paraguay is a solid team (they held a 56 percent-44 percent advantage in possession vs. Colombia) and they won’t be a pushover by any means for the U.S. As always in a knockout game like this, the first goal (assuming that there is one) will be critical. Obviously, the crowd will be squarely on the Americans’ side which will provide a nice homefield advantage.

Who are locker room leaders at each position for Eagles? The Eagles will have an abundance of veteran leadership fueling them this season. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

The Eagles will have just about six weeks away from organized football starting Friday, and most players are planning some combination of rest and football workouts during that time (with several players slated to head to San Diego to throw around with Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz). When they return on July 24, Doug Pederson knows he has a group of very capable athletes arriving back in Philadelphia — due in large part to a few outspoken veteran leaders on this year’s roster. “It’s a very smart football team; meaning they have picked up the schemes extremely well,”

Pederson told the media Thursday. “This is a group that also has some tremendous leaders on the football team, guys that I’ve seen sort of from afar kind of taking charge at their position groups.” Each position seems to have one main guy, as far as leaders go — from the linebackers to the offensive line to the quarterbacks. And though it’s still quite early in the Pederson era, the leaders have already jumped on board and are preaching the gospel to their fellow position parishioners. “Another thing is they have bought into the things that I’ve talked to them about, and that’s encouraging,” the coach said. “The [idea] that I can trust them and they can trust me and that’s the bottom line in this deal. You know, we come to work every day ready to go, and looking forward to camp.” Here’s a look at who’s the locker room leader at each position at the NovaCare Complex.

Quarterback: Sam Bradford Clearly, a team’s QB1 is the assumed leader of a locker room and though he is soft spoken (and despite his early offseason holdout), Bradford still commands respect from all of his offensive teammates. As he showed at times last year — particularly with his showerroom, players-only meeting that propelled the team to victory over the Saints — he knows how to be a leader.

Running backs: Darren Sproles Another soft-spoken veteran, Sproles is the most experienced offensive player (other than Jason Peters) on the team. He leads by example and will be a big part of the offense and special teams in 2016.

Wide Receivers: Jordan Matthews Matthews has trans-

formed himself into an emotional leader for the wide receivers, and the entire offense. Never shy to speak to the media, nor to have a chat with a younger player on the sidelines, Matthews has one of the most important voices on the roster. He and elder statesman Brent Celek are the key cogs in the locker room.

Offensive line: Jason Kelce While Peters is the longest-tenured offensive lineman, Kelce plays at the center position and is the quarterback of the offensive line. And like Matthews, he is a vocal

Defensive line: Brandon Graham The defensive line is a talented bunch this season, with Fletcher Cox expected to continue his ascension into one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL. But another first round pick, Graham, is the go-to-guy in the locker room for most younger players. A close second is Connor Barwin, who is also a talented and valuable veteran leader.

Linebackers: Jordan Hicks Yes, Hicks is the leader

of the linebackers. With no disrespect for Mychal Kendricks, who will move to the outside this season, Hicks has all the characteristics of a budding star and is a vocal leader in the middle despite entering just his second pro season.

Secondary: Malcolm Jenkins Jenkins, fresh off his first trip to the Pro Bowl, is the Sam Bradford of the defense. He’s the unit’s leader and has a spectacular rapport with rookies, veterans and media members alike. And he — like everyone else on this list — is a big proponent of the Jim Schwartz defense.

The Links brings a privatecaliber course to public golfers A hidden gem, Marlton’s The Links (which isn’t actually a links course) is a bargain and true test of golf.

Stradivari can more than handle himself on a fast track. GETTY IMAGES

Local knowledge tip: “The 11th hole is probably one of the hardest 330-yard holes in golf, Quinn said. “If you play the men’s tees, you have to at least hit it 220 to hit the corner and it has to be in the fairway to have any chance with the overhanging trees. If you go 270, you hit it too far. And then you have to go over water to the green complex that is pitched from front to back — it’s a very severe green.

For some golfers, the country club life is an aspiration but perhaps not an attainable reality. The Links Golf Club is meant for those very golfers. The course has been private for over 30 years, but was opened up to the public a year and a half ago and is a hidden gem in South Jersey. “A private model is very hard to make it these days with the economy so bad,â€? director of golf David Quinn said. “Most golf courses in Southern Jersey are private.â€? The Links offers private design and conditions to the public at large, and is seemingly carved out of serene woods. But the name can fool many people. The course is anything but links-style.

Price range: From $20 (weekday twilight) to $62 (weekend morning)

Clear the water on No. 8 and a birdie could be your reward. STEVE DAG

“What I tell everybody when they first come out here is, first it’s not a links golf course. It’s tree lined, Quinn, who has been involved with the golf course since his youth, said. “It’s a second-shot golf course. It’s more about getting it in play. The greens are small, so you can’t get wild out here and hit a driver off every tee. You have to play conserva-

tive, position golf. Every hole seems to have some kind of impediment in your way (in addition to the thick forests). Whether it’s a tree right in your line — sometimes in the middle of the fairway, a bunker you didn’t see or a water hazard, local knowledge is invaluable at The Links. “It gets a little bit longer as you play, Quinn

Exaggerator (Post Position: 11, Odds: 9-5) Exaggerator won’t offer generous odds having just won the Preakness Stakes three weeks ago, especially after the defection of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist due to sickness, but he will be tough to beat on Saturday. Exaggerator’s credentials are overwhelming, as he’s won four graded stakes in his career, and figures to handle the testing mileand-a-half distance of the Belmont Stakes based on pedigree. Stradivari (Post Position: 5, Odds: 5-1)

Governor Malibu (Post Position: 1, Odds: 12-1) Governor Malibu will have to improve a bit from a speed figure standpoint, but this 12-1 shot has a lot going for him in this race. He was a fast-closing second in last month’s mile-and-aneighth Peter Pan Stakes, the traditional prep at Belmont for the crown jewel of their spring/ summer meet. His running style suggests he’ll improve with added distance, as does his pedigree. ROBERT CRISCOLA

Stradivari was a wild card going into the Preakness Stakes; he had never run in a stakes race before, but was coming off two straight romps against lesser competition. He was a little hard to control early and suffered a wide trip partially due to his outside post, but his effort was commendable; he was fourth, beaten four lengths.

There may not be a Triple Crown on the line this year, but the Belmont Stakes (6 p.m., NBC) still promises to be a very exciting race. It drew a competitive field of 13, but here are the three horses you should be watching for Saturday:

said. “We are known for the back 9. It’s long and it’s tight.â€? The course is located about 40 minutes east of Philadelphia in Marlton, New Jersey, and if you’re a Pennsylvania resident, Quinn and his course will reimburse you for your bridge toll (a $5 discount). From the outside it looks a bit dated and worn, but it’s out of love and respect for the game. And the course is as good as you can get for the price.
