MICROSOFT TO BUY LINKEDIN FOR $26.2B IN ITS LARGEST DEAL

1

Microsoft will buy LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in its biggest-ever deal, combining the software giant’s business-productivity tools with an online network of 433 million professionals. For Microsoft, the deal will help it in its mission of trying to keep services like Outlook email relevant enough that customers won’t want to leave it for competitors such as Google’s Gmail. For LinkedIn, the opportunity to tap Microsoft’s customers, including the 1.2 billion users of its Office suite of business software, could help it jump-start growth, which has slowed in recent quarters. BALTIMORE COP SAYS FREDDIE GRAY ASKED FOR HELP DURING FATAL RIDE

2

A Baltimore police officer testified Monday that black detainee Freddie Gray asked for help while being transported in a police van, where he suffered a broken neck. The officer, William Porter, took the stand in the trial of Officer Caesar Goodson, 46, the van’s driver. Prosecutors contend Goodson gave Gray a “rough ride” and he is accused of second-degree depraved heart murder and other charges in Gray’s death in April 2015. His death triggered protests and rioting in Baltimore and stoked a U.S. debate on police treatment of minorities. Goodson is the third of six officers to go on trial, and his attorneys argue that Gray caused his own fatal injuries. Porter testified in Baltimore City Circuit Court that he responded to a call to assist Goodson at the fourth stop the van made while transporting Gray. He found Gray, who was shackled, lying on his stomach on the van’s floor, his head toward the front of the vehicle. REUTERS

TOP COURT TOSSES PUERTO RICO’S DEBT RESTRUCTURING LAW

3

The Supreme Court refused to revive a Puerto Rico debt-restructuring law, putting the U.S. territory at risk of a messy default unless Congress this month passes legislation to help the Caribbean island survive its crippling fiscal crisis. The justices ruled 5-2 that Puerto Rico’s 2014 statute, which would have let it cut billions of dollars in debt at public utilities over creditor objections, conflicted with federal bankruptcy law. The justices left in place a 2015 appeals court ruling invalidating the law, called the Recovery Act. Passage of legislation now advancing in the U.S. Congress is likely the only remaining option to restructure Puerto Rico’s debt in a bid to avoid a default. REUTERS

Coalition calls for end to ‘discriminatory’ blood donation policies The Blood Equality coalition promoting new look at requirement that gay, bisexual men be celibate for a year to give blood. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Outraged at being denied the chance to donate blood for the victims of Sunday’s mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, a coalition is calling for an end to discriminatory policies related to AIDS transmission. The Blood Equality coalition — made up of medical experts, scientists and members of the LGBT community — will gather in front of the steps of City Hall on Tuesday morning to protest blood donor policy that requires gay or bisexual men to abstain from sex for a year if they plan to donate blood. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration announced that it would be changing its policy from an indefinite deferral for sexually active gay and bisexual male blood donors to requiring a year’s celibacy. According to the agency, the change bet-

ter aligns the deferral period for men who have sex with other men with the deferral period for others at increased risk for HIV infection, including those who had a recent blood transfusion or may have been accidentally exposed to someone else’s blood. Tuesday’s event was planned weeks prior to the massacre at a nightclub in Orlando, in which 49 people were killed and 53 wounded. The mass shooting emphasizes the need for a change in policy, organizers said. According to CNN, as hundreds of people lined up to donate blood for the victims of the terrorist and hate attack, many gay and bisexual men were turned away because they didn’t meet the celibacy requirement. “It put us again in another crazy situation where our sisters and brothers are dying and we can’t help,” said Gilles Herrada, an author and biologist who will be speaking during Tuesday’s event. Herrada said that he remembers the icy feel-

ing down his spine he felt when he attempted to donate blood back when he was in college and was told he could not because he was gay. Although much has changed since then, Herrada says that the policies still are based on fear rather then science. “Fear feeds fear, we just know that. The more we have policies, we have rules or laws that are based on fearing others, the more we will live in a world that is biased and will amplify that fear,” he said. During Tuesday’s press conference — scheduled for 11 a.m. — the coalition will also announce an upcoming Medical Advisory Board event cohosted by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and the agency FCB Health. The mission of the Medical Advisory Board, which is part of the Blood Equality campaign, is to bring together experts on blood donation policies, HIV and blood safety to discuss and figure out alternatives to the current policies.

“We don’t know the answers at present, but we just feel like there has got to be a better way.” Barbagallo

“We are looking for better ways to look at screenings, ways that are less discriminatory,” said Dr. Joseph Barbagallo, medical strategist at FCB Health. “We don’t know the answers at present, but we just feel like there has got to be a better way.” Barbagallo added that although present screenings are not 100 percent foolproof, which would make allowing everyone to donate not the best solution, there are tests that show results from screenings in seven to 10 days. “There is enough science to at least support the notion that this one year deferment is a little overly cautious,” Barbagallo said. Anthony Hayes, vice president of public affairs and policy for Gay Men’s Health Crisis, added that although the FDA could not make it to Tuesday’s press conference, the coalition does want to have an active and open discussion with the agency in regards to the policies. “Our goal is to bring together medical experts, doctors to have a science and fact based conversation versus a policy that stigmatizes particular groups of people,” Hayes said. The FDA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Holding signs with the names of victims and demanding “gun control now,” thousands gathered Monday outside the iconic Stonewall Inn to honor those killed in the terrorist attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Crowds began filling the streets around the Greenwich Viillage bar that is considered the birthplace of the gay rights movement for a vigil for the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at the vigil, attended by members of Congress and a who’s who of city officials and

LGBT activists. Cuomo railed against Congress for failing to pass gun control measures and vowed to walk shoulder to shoulder with participants in the largest and safest Pride parade ever in New York on June 26. “The Orlando massacre has stirred a cauldron of emotions ... frustration over a society that allows a madman to buy an assault weapon,” Cuomo said. “It has gone on far too long. “How many people must die before the federal government comes to its senses?” Cuomo said the rampage by an Americanborn Muslim whose parents immigrated from Afghanistan was not a senseless or random act. “It targeted the LGBT community,” he said. “That is vile. That is evil, That is hatred. And we must all stand up with one voice and condemn it.” Earlier, de Blasio rejected New York real estate mogul and presumptive Republican

presidential nominee Donald Trump’s renewed call for clamping down on Muslim immigration and increased surveillance of Muslims in the country. “Our message tonight is we stand in solidarity with all members of the LGBT community, and obviously it will be a

vigil in memory of those lost in Orlando,” de Blasio said on 1010 WINS Monday morning. The mayor also added that there will also be a large NYPD presence at key sites around the city, especially LGBT community sites. “The LGBT community in America and around the world is often the target of hate, but time and again has proven that love conquers hate,” the Facebook description for Monday’s event said. “We will not run and hide, we will not cower to violence and we will continue to love and fight for full equality for all Americans.” On Tuesday night, Public Advocate Letitia James is planning to host a unity vigil at the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. The vigil, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will include elected officials and members of the LGBT, Muslim, Hispanic and anti-gun violence community. Joel Milman contributed to this article.

Brooklyn social worker among those killed in club shooting Enrique Rios, 25, was in Orlando celebrating a friend’s birthday. He was supposed to be back in the city Sunday. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

The family of Enrique Rios has been torn apart after finding out that the beloved son, who traveled to Florida to celebrate a friend’s birthday, was among the scores of innocent men and women killed at the Pulse nightclub. Rios, a 25-year-old social worker from Williamsburg, was in Orlando for the weekend and was expected to return to New York City on Sunday, according to the New York Daily News. However, Rios was one of the 49 killed inside the Orlando nightclub when Omar Mateen, 29, entered and began shooting at partygoers armed with an AR-15 assault rifle and handgun. Around 53 people were injured and are being treated in local hospitals. Rios’ uncle remembers him as a “good kid” who was attending nursing school while working as a social worker for the elderly, the Daily News reported. His family was made aware of the shooting when a friend, who managed to escape the nightclub, called and said they had gotten

In just 12 hours, the campaign garnered over $10,500 in donations and the page was filled with comments of support.

2 bicyclists, pedestrian killed in weekend hit-and-runs Two drivers are on the run and one is facing a manslaughter charge after a deadly weekend that claimed the lives of two bicyclists and one pedestrian. The first incident occurred Saturday about 12:40 a.m. when police discovered 26-year-old Giovanni A. Nin lying on the road near East Tremont and Mayflower avenues in the Bronx, according to authorities. Upon further investigation, police determined that Nin had been riding his bicycle along East Tremont Avenue when he tried to cross, mid-block, and was struck by a silver BMW X5, cops said. The driver drove off and emergency personnel later pronounced Nin dead at the scene. The NYPD has released video of the vehicle involved in this incident and say it suffered damage to its front right bumper, hood and windshield.

Police released surveillance video of the silver BMW X5 that fatally struck 26-year-old Giovanni A. Nin in the Bronx on Saturday morning. NYPD

Later that night, another vehicle struck a bicyclist in Manhattan. According to police, around 7:52 p.m. a 2011 Ford truck — driven by Samuel Silva, 26, of New Jersey — struck a woman riding her bicycle southbound on West Street. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she was later pronounced dead from head and other injuries. Silva drove away but was later detained near Warren Street and North End Avenue, police said.

He has been charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian, and driving while ability impaired. Just hours later at 1:19 a.m. Sunday in the Bronx an SUV struck 62-year-old Sharon Smith as she was attempting to cross East Gun Hill Road, police said. Smith was found lying on the road near White Plains Road with severe trauma to her body, according to cops. She was taken to Montefiore Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. According to police, Smith was struck by a dark colored SUV traveling east on East Gun Hill Road and which later drove away. Anyone with information in regards to these incidents is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). ANGY ALTAMIRANO

Ripple Lab granted NY license for bitcoin New York state’s financial regulator on Monday approved a license for bitcoin company Ripple Labs Inc., allowing it to offer digital currency services in the state. The New York State Department of Financial Services said the company had cleared a review of anti-money laundering, capitalization, consumer protection and cyber-security standards. “DFS is pleased to continue to foster the growth of the New York virtual currency marketplace,” acting Department of Financial Services Superintendent Maria T. Vullo said in a statement. Bitcoin is a web-based “cryptocurrency” that enables users to move money around the world quickly and anonymously without the need for third-party verification.

Despite being championed by some as the digital money of the future, it is often dismissed as a currency that is too volatile to invest in. Ripple’s service and currency, known as XRP, is for financial institutions and companies, such as banks, that provide liquidity for foreign exchanges. Last year, New York became the first state to issue extensive rules for virtual currency companies. The guidelines, aimed at consumer protection and prevention of money laundering, require companies to obtain what is known in the state as a “BitLicense.” Ripple filed for the license under its corporate name, XRP II LLC, a venture backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures and IDG Capital Partners. A vigil was also held in the Canal Street district in central Manchester, northern England — an area of the city that is filled with gay bars and restaurants. The Metropolitan Police said there was no intelligence to suggest an increased risk of attacks in London but it has increased its patrols in areas popular with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. On June 25, Pride will hold their annual parade and related events in central London for the LGBT

community. The Eiffel Tower was lit up in rainbow colors on Monday evening in tribute to the victims of the massacre in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In March, the Eiffel Tower displayed Belgian colors after twin attacks by Islamists in Brussels killed at least 26 people. US Navy: Second aircraft carrier enters Mediterranean The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the Mediterranean late on Monday, the Navy said, at a time when officials are raising alarm over Russia’s maritime expansion. The Eisenhower, also known as the “Ike,” will relieve the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group which later this month heads back to the United States after an extended eight-month deployment. The Eisenhower, which also leads a strike group of cruisers, destroyers and warplanes, is scheduled to continue on to the Persian Gulf to participate in U.S. air strikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria. Exact details of its deployment have not been released. Fighter jets based on the Truman have been carrying out air strikes against Islamic State from the Mediterranean

Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

14 NEWS

Clinton, Trump clash over Orlando massacre Hillary Clinton on Monday warned against demonizing Muslim Americans, while Donald Trump again called for banning foreign-born Muslims from entering the country after the Orlando, Florida, nightclub massacre that was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. “The Orlando terrorist may be dead, but the virus that poisoned his mind remains very strong, and we must attack it,” Clinton, the Democrats’ presumptive nominee for the Nov. 8 election, said in a speech in Cleveland. Trump was more critical, lashing out at President Barack Obama by questioning his motives for refusing to use the term “radical Islamic terrorism” in describing such attacks. He argued that both the president and Clinton were unfit to lead the nation. Omar Mateen, 29, the U.S.-born son of Afghan immigrants, armed with an assault rifle and pledging loyalty to militant group Islamic State, opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando early on Sunday. In proposals for dealing with threats of violence at home and abroad, Clinton called for increased efforts to remove Islamic State propaganda from the internet, more air strikes in the areas held by the militant group and better coordination with allies in the region. She specifically called out three U.S. allies —

Donald Trump

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait — for allowing their citizens to fund mosques and schools that train jihadists. She also called for stricter gun control laws, reiterating prior calls to prohibit those on terrorism watch lists from buying guns. She pointed out that while the Federal Bureau of Investigation was aware of Mateen as a possible threat, he was still able to legally purchase a gun. Clinton has called for a complete ban on assaultstyle guns. Clinton called on Americans to come together in the way they did after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. She pointed out that, at the time, she was a Democratic U.S. senator representing New York, while the U.S. president, New York governor and New York City mayor were all Republicans. “Americans from all walks of life rallied together with a sense of common purpose on September 12. … We had each others’ backs. We did not attack each other, we worked with each other

to protect our country and rebuild our city,” Clinton said. “It is time to get back to the spirit of those days, the spirit of 9/12, let’s keep looking for the best within our country, the best within each of us.” Earlier, Trump questioned Obama’s motives for not using the term “radical Islam” in an interview on Fox News. “He doesn’t get it or he gets it better than anybody understands,” Trump said. “It’s one or the other, and neither one is acceptable.” Trump has for years suggested that Obama is secretly a Muslim. In 2011, when the wealthy businessman drew national attention for demanding that Obama produce another copy of his birth certificate, he told Fox News, “maybe it says he is a Muslim.” Obama is a practicing Christian. “We’re led by a man that either is not tough, not smart or he’s got something else in mind,” Trump said on Fox without being specific. “And the something else in mind. People can’t believe it. … There’s something going on. It’s inconceivable.” REUTERS

EDUCATION GUIDE

Careers by design Universities are taking a new approach to careers that places casting a wide net above climbing a ladder. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa

alizah.salario@metro.us

“What am I going to do with my life?” In a job market upended by a digital revolution and a widening chasm between the rich and poor, perennial platitudes like “play to your strengths” and “follow your passion” are no longer satisfactory answers to the above question — if they ever were. Pursuing a singular passion or a linear career path doesn’t make sense in today’s economy, suggests Kelly Ahn, director of career services at The New School in Manhattan, where a more fluid approach to career building called “design thinking” is being embraced.

“Our career counseling sessions start with the belief that everyone has the ability to design one’s own career path to be flexible, creative and personalized,” says Ahn. Design thinking is rooted in the idea that students (and professionals, too) benefit from developing competency in areas that may or may not be directly related to their major or field. Whereas in the past, when students who experimented in multiple disciplines might have been considered scattered dilettantes, today’s undergraduates are encouraged to get a wide range of professional skills and experiences under their belt. In a shifting economy where bouncing between careers and jobs is the norm, being versatile is crucial. “The rise of artificial intelligence, robotic automation and machine learning have and will continue to impact all jobs,” says Ahn. “With the

rapidly changing job market, working professionals need to develop and evolve their skills.” Though “transactional” services like reviewing résumés and cover letters are still staples of university career centers, The New School is just one of many universities using design thinking to go beyond mere matchmaking between students and jobs. A design-thinking approach is experience and individual-based, says Ahn. Students are encouraged to apply specialized skills to a broad range of industries and disciplines. It’s the “hybrid approach” of the generalist/ specialist, says Ahn, that “gives [students] a competitive edge entering the job market, diversifies their professional paths and expands their career longevity.” Design thinking was first popularized by the design firm IDEO, and used as a unique approach to problem solving in the

To be competitive in today’s job market, flexibility is key. ISTOCK

professional world. In her counseling sessions, Ahn draws on the advice of IDEO founder David Kelly, who once said, “Creative confidence is the notion that you have big ideas, and that you have the ability to act on them.” Generating unconventional solutions and testing out ideas — no matter how seemingly crazy — is key to design thinking. “This approach empowers students to continue their creativity so they

don’t feel limited or stuck in one profession.” So what exactly does design thinking look like in the real world? Consider Loliware, a biodegradable, edible cup made with organic cane sugar, tapioca syrup, seaweed and fruit created by Parsons School of Design (one of the New School’s seven colleges) graduates and “Shark Tank” participants Leigh Ann Tucker and Chelsea Briganti. Or take an unconventional book cart designed by Par-

sons graduates specifically for prisons that helps to get a range of books into the hands of incarcerated individuals. In both cases, graduates used their specialized knowledge to addresses broader issues of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It’s a classic — and effective — use of design thinking. For design thinkers, the question isn’t “What am I going to do with my life?” but “What aren’t I going to do?”

The actress gets to turn into a half-orc halfhuman in the splashy fantasy film “Warcraft.” Paula Patton will be the first to admit that she didn’t know much about the video game franchise “World of Warcraft” when she picked up the script for Duncan Jones’ film adaptation. So wrapping her head around the idea of playing a human-orc hybrid was more than a little daunting. Luckily the actress, 40, had a director she trusted and an unending amount of patience for all the makeup tests to get her signature look. How did Duncan Jones ease you into the world of “Warcraft”? The way he explained this world to me and the passion he had, I was so moved. Before we got lawyers involved he was like, “Do you want to do this?” and I was like, “I want to do this!” I got in my car and I went, “Oh s—!” I was so scared. I wanted to do it justice. But how I would I become a half-

orc, half-human? Then I realized that the thing that you are most scared of doing, you should do, you know? It’s all those things that compelled me to be a part of it. I didn’t really know what I was in until I watched the movie. I had this whole new respect for Duncan. I was in awe of him. It must be daunting, though, bringing a movie like this out into the world. It’s about having no fear. Sometimes you feel as though you’re in competition. But if you have no

fear and you have faith in yourself, then you can achieve that — and you can achieve it with partnership, with a team. I believe it is mind over matter, just like in the fantasy film: It’s about imagination. You can will it to yourself. You have to have faith and believe and not let [in] any bit of negativity or doubt or what came before you or what people say. You have to decide your own reality and make it possible. What was the process of getting into your very elaborate costume and

makeup for this film? That process began way before we started shooting. We did a lot of tests to find it and make it. It was trial and error. I had a moment of [doubt] when I had signed on to do the film. I went to the bathroom and saw myself in the mirror for the first time and I almost had a panic attack. I was like, “Wait, I can’t f—ing do this!” [Laughs] That look could definitely give you pause. My friend talked me down. I came to embrace it because I was afraid. I

didn’t know how I was going to become this half-orc, half-human. But it became a collaborative effort: costumes and makeup and hair, all with Duncan’s vision. Then you put on the finishing touches, the tusks and the contact lenses — which really obscured my vision — and that was that last bit. I didn’t feel human — and certainly not wearing much clothing while everyone else wore clothing made me feel like I didn’t fit in. I came to embrace it. MWN

Brooklyn is for lovers Emma Straub is cool with her buzzy new book being called a beach read. CHLOE TSANG @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

In many ways, watching your neighborhood transform over the years feels like watching your children grow up. Sometimes, you feel helpless about these changes, other times they mirror your own growth. Author Emma Straub is no stranger to this shift. “I remember when I graduated from college, it seemed like half of my

graduating class moved to Brooklyn and I had this weird freak out where I was like, ‘But it’s not theirs, what are they doing?’ she recalls. “I got very possessive. In general, I’m not a possessive person. But I got very possessive about my city. Straub, a New York native, grew up and started a family of her own all while living in various corners of Brooklyn. She uses the borough as a character in her latest novel, “Modern Lovers, set in Brooklyn’s quaint Ditmas Park neighborhood. The novel traces the paths of Andrew, Zoe and Elizabeth, who have known one another since their punk rock days in college. Now approaching their 50s, they are forced to take a step back and reevaluate their relationships and their priorities. Given its perceptive take on youth and growing older — and its spot-on depiction of gentrifying Brooklyn — “Modern Lovers is a must-read this

summer. We spoke with Straub about the joys of modern love in Brooklyn. What was the inspiration behind “Modern Lovers? I was personally inspired by having a middle-aged neighbor who played the drums in a local rock ’n’ roll band. I would often hear him practicing. I thought it was so cool and fun that he was a grown-up person with a family and a life who still cared enough about playing music to do it with his friends. I tried to write a short story about that. And then I realized the story I was interested wasn’t really about the band itself. It was about marriages and parenthood and all those other things. read about. Sometimes I like a good crime story/mystery novel, but mostly what I like to read are books about people living their lives and their relationships. I never worry about having a story that seems too quiet, because I think that’s how life is. When you go and meet a friend for dinner and they tell you the stories of whatever has happened to them since you saw them last, those are the stories you listen to and are interested in — stories about people you care about. It’s

not about asteroids and monsters, although sometimes asteroids and monsters are fun. I don’t think that writers get to choose their milieu. What do you plan on reading this summer? Rumaan Alam has a debut novel coming out in June called “Rich and Pretty. Another friend of mine, Stuart Nadler, has a book coming out in July called “The Inseparables. And I’m also really looking forward to reading the new Ann Patchett. She’s one of my heroes.

How have you experienced the changes in Brooklyn that you allude to in the book? I’ve seen the borough change enormously. When I started high school, Brooklyn was this far-off land. I went to summer camp with a lot of kids from Brooklyn, and I never saw them during the year because it felt like going to the moon from where I lived [in Manhattan]. Now, it doesn’t feel that way. I think, like, all changes to places that you love, sometimes it seems wonderful and, like, a neighborhood is becoming more robust. And sometimes it seems terrible and, like, there’s sort of an overdevelopment tipping point where it starts driving people out because the rent gets too high. I don’t think it can keep going like this forever. I think there is this Brooklyn fever pitch that’s happening right now, and once that passes, it’ll be nice. Do you think there will be a new Brooklyn soon? Yes — Queens!

Mosquitoes are annoying at the best of times, but when you can’t turn on the TV without hearing about a disease they’re spreading, the winged menaces are downright terrifying. Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness that causes severe birth defects in fetuses of infected mothers. It’s been a problem for pregnant women in faraway places like South America and the Caribbean, until now: On June 1, a mother infected with Zika gave birth to an infected baby in New Jersey. The baby was diag-

nosed with microcephaly — a head smaller than expected due to lack of brain development. There’s more. While once thought to be transmitted via mosquito bite, the World Health Organization recently announced Zika can also be transmitted sexually. Men can pass it to women during unprotected sex, and women who become pregnant — or who are already pregnant when they are infected — can pass it to their fetuses. (It’s unknown if women can pass Zika to men during sex, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.) What does all this mean if you’re pregnant or trying for a baby? We spoke to Dr. Jesse L. Goodman, former chief

scientist of the FDA and a member of the Institute of Medicine and renowned expert on infectious diseases, about Zika and how to keep yourself safe. Is the Zika virus expected to affect the U.S. this summer? The main mosquito type that has transmitted Zika — currently there’s an outbreak in South America — is pretty widespread throughout the southern United States, especially further south. We have the mosquitoes here that can transmit it, but as of yet, that Zika isn’t in those U.S. mosquitoes. So what everybody is worried about is if it gets into that mosquito population. The mosquitoes could fly here, which is less likely given their

ISTOCK

WELLBEING begin transmitting the virus here. But so far that hasn’t happened. The World Health Organization released new information that the disease can easily be sexually transmitted. Yes. If a male tests positive, the CDC recommends that they should either use condoms or abstain from sex for six months to avoid transmitting it sexually. If a woman tests positive and is not pregnant, it’s recommended that they protect against pregnancy, in this case for at least two months. Pregnant women need to be concerned if their sexual partner has traveled to an area where there could be Zika.

wellbeing short life span. [It’s more likely] for an individual who was infected elsewhere, like the Caribbean or South America, to get bitten by a mosquito here, which could then

What’s the most important thing to know for women who either are or want to get pregnant? People need to take it very seriously. The consequences for a fetus can be terrible. Although mosquitoes are the main way of transmitting the virus, it is also a sexually transmitted disease, and when it’s sexually

transmitted, it can be a serious problem. Now people have to view another aspect of responsible sex, transmitting Zika, particularly to a woman who might be pregnant or be becoming pregnant in the future. I think women and men need to take the role of the male partner very seriously.

nancy — it either causes no symptoms or it is an annoyance. Most patients who have the virus have no symptoms at all, they don’t feel sick. And then maybe one in five have a fever, aches, a rash, red eyes. In a much smaller number, something like 1 in 10,000 or less, get neurologic complications like Guillain Barre Syndrome.

How can people protect themselves? Do what is possible to reduce exposure to mosquitoes that might transmit disease. The second thing is education. Then, particularly, people who are planning a pregnancy should do everything possible to reduce their personal risk of exposure, like using a BPA-approved mosquito repellent and trying to keep covered when outside. And people should avoid travel to areas where we already know Zika is circulating such as in Latin America or the Caribbean.

What’s a clear indicator that someone in the U.S. should get tested for the virus? Its recommended if people have traveled and developed symptoms. Pregnant women who have traveled or moved to areas where Zika virus is known to be, it is recommended that they get tested.

What are the symptoms? For most adults — other than pregnant women and their sexual partners or people planning preg-

What are treatment options since there is no vaccination? There is no currently available medicine or treatment that is directly effective against the virus. [If a pregnant woman has a positive test] their pregnancy needs to be evaluated and monitored by a fetal health expert.

Reed has been a find for the Mets The relief pitcher has thrived as the team’s set-up man. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

Addison Reed was viewed as a risky pickup back in August when the Mets acquired him to fortify their leaky bullpen. He had a bad year closing games in 2014 with the Diamondbacks (1-7, 4.25 ERA, and a 1.7 HR per nine innings rate), then it got even worse for him in 2015 after he was removed from the closers’ role and was eventually demoted to Triple-A with career-worst hit and walk rates. But the Mets’ move has paid off big time, and Reed is currently thriving as the setup man. Reed has posted a 1.82 ERA through 31 appearances, and he’s currently holding career

bests in hit rate (6.4 per nine innings) and walk rate (2.1 per nine innings). Before Saturday’s game in Milwaukee, Reed hadn’t allowed a single earned run since April 30. He’s allowed just one home run all season, which came back in early April. Reed’s also striking out hitters at a remarkable rate of 10.6 per nine frames. Opposing batters are hitting just .196 against Reed this season, and at home that number is even lower; a staggering .102. There’s hardly been a situation that Reed hasn’t faced this year. He’s come in as early as the sixth inning and as late as the ninth (when he picked up a save on April 27), and has pitched with the lead, tied and trailing. He’s also been asked to pitch back-to-back days 12 times, and has allowed just one earned run in 11 innings off zero days’

Addison Reed has grown into the setup role quickly and is a potent bridge to Jeurys Familia.

rest. But Reed’s mainly been asked to pitch the eighth inning before Jeurys Familia comes in to close in the ninth, and he’s content with that role. “I don’t care which inning I’m throwing,” Reed told reporters recently. “As long as we’re winning and as long as we’re getting

outs and getting the ball to Familia in the ninth inning, that’s all we’re going to try and do.” Reed was dominant in the seventh inning role in the latter part of 2015 as well as the playoffs, and based off that small sample size the Mets decided to hand Reed a one-year, $5.3 million contract, which

seemed like a very dicey move. But Reed has replicated that dominant form from late last year, so GM Sandy Alderson has looked like a genius. Reed chalks up the sudden reversal from his shaky Arizona days to Mets’ pitching coach Dan Warthen. “[Warthen] is a pitching genius,” Reed told reporters last season. “He kind of left me alone, let me do my thing. I felt comfortable throwing all my pitches for strikes, and I think that was the biggest thing. I was able to throw my slider where I wanted to throw it, whereas in the first half of the season I couldn’t

tell you where the ball was going.”

Living the Goeddel life Erik Goeddel was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday as the struggling Logan Verrett was sent down after a losing Saturday’s spot start, in which he lasted just four innings. Goeddel had a 4.94 ERA in 23.1 IP in the hitterfriendly Pacific Coast League this season; he’ll be hoping to replicate his major league stats from last year (33.1 IP, 2.43 ERA, 0.990 WHIP). He pitched a scoreless inning in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Milwaukee.

Giants (38-26)

Cardinals (35-28)

After splitting a twogame series with the Red Sox, the Giants went on to win two out of three over the weekend to get back to being up five games in the NL West.

It’s pretty amazing that the Cardinals have won five straight and seven of their last 10, but are still nine games out in the division. Matt Carpenter has a 2.8 WAR, which is third in the NL.

Red Sox (36-26)

Blue Jays (35-30)

It wasn’t the greatest of road trips as the Sox went 3-2 in San Fran and Minnesota, but they are still tied for the AL East lead. Xander Bogaerts continues to lead the best offense in the AL.

Toronto has won three straight and is now just 2.5 games out in the AL East. The Jays are led by their offense, especially Edwin Encarnacion, who has 54 RBI. That’s the second best mark in the AL.

Mets (34-28)

The Nationals have won three straight games and seven of their last 10 to open up a 4.5-game lead in the NL East. Stephen Strasburg continues to do his thing as his 10 wins are tied for the lead in MLB.

Even though the O’s have dropped three games in a row, they are still tied for the AL East lead. The O’s and Red Sox will meet at Fenway Park this week. Mark Trumbo leads all of MLB with 20 homers.

The Mets have lost two straight games to fall 4.5 games out in the NL East. They will be looking to improve on their plus-21 run differential as they need to get better performances at the plate.

Indians (35-27)

Texas is one of the hottest teams in the game as it has won eight of its last 10 and has jumped out to a five-game lead in the AL West. Cole Hamels has proven to be one of the better acquisitions that Texas has ever made.

The Indians have won seven of their last 10 games to open a threegame lead in the AL Central. Led by their pitching, they have a plus-47 run differential, which is best in the division. Josh Tomlin has eight wins.
