PAUL RYAN DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM TRUMP MUSLIM BAN
1
House speaker Paul Ryan, the top U.S. elected Republican, on Tuesday distanced himself from presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims from a variety of countries in a further sign of establishment unease with Trump’s agenda. Trump gave his first speech on the Orlando, Florida, massacre Monday, a day after the attack at a gay nightclub that was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. modern history. The New York mogul said if elected Nov. 8, he would temporarily suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is “a proven history of terrorism.” In a subsequent tweet, he said he was referring to “nations tied to Islamic terror.” REUTERS
JUROR IN STANFORD SEX ASSAULT TRIAL: ‘JUSTICE NOT SERVED’

A juror in the Stanford University sexual assault case wrote to the judge expressing his disappointment over what was seen by many as a very lenient sentence handed down to former student-athlete Brock Turner. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky is facing a recall campaign following public anger over his decision to sentence Turner, 20, to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman after a party. The juror, who requested to remain anonymous, said he was disappointed and “vehemently” disagreed with the June 2 sentence, according to the letter, which was posted online late Monday by the Palo Alto Weekly newspaper. Prosecutors had sought a six-year prison term for Turner after he was convicted on three felony counts of sexual assault for the January 2015 attack. REUTERS

Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and gained access to the entire database of opposition research on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, the committee and security researchers said Tuesday. The intrusion is emblematic of the sophistication of Russian hackers, who have long been viewed by intelligence officials as the most talented of U.S. adversaries in cyberspace. Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, confirmed the breach to Reuters. It was first reported by the Washington Post. REUTERS
Trump banner that caused unease for Latinos replaced by Democrat’s sign Laundromat owner says support for Republican candidate hasn’t hurt his business. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

In the weeks following Donald Trump’s victory in Massachusetts’ Republican primary with 49 percent of the vote, signs supporting the bombastic New York real estate mogul caused unease in East Boston. For many in the heavily Latino area, it was especially unsettling when a large Trump banner with his name and campaign slogan — “Make America Great Again” — went up above the entryway to a neighborhood laundromat, the Soap Box on Meridian Street. Trump launched his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination last year with a tirade against illegal immigration, labeling Mexicans who entered the United States illegally “rapists’ and “criminals,” and vowing to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border. Many of the Trump signs are gone now, including the one at the laundromat. It’s been replaced with a campaign sign for Joseph Boncore, a Democrat who was elected the district’s state senator in a March special election. David Tirone, the New Hampshire resident and Eastie native who owns the building where the sign was placed, said he let Boncore’s campaign put up the sign because he is friendly with the politician. Tirone also said before
In East Boston, which has a large Latino population, a laundromat used to have a political sign up for Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, whose rhetoric on immigrants has unnerved Latinos. For the past few weeks it’s been covered by a sign endorsing a state senator. The Trump sign will be back soon, building owner David Tirone said. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
Trump ran, he was a lifelong Democrat, and that he’s put political signs up on the laundromat’s prominent entryway in Eastie’s Central Square primarily for Democrats running for local positions for about 25 years. The Boncore sign is only temporary. It was tacked on top of the Trump sign, the red and blue border of which is still visible. The Trump sign will be uncovered eventually and will stay there at least until November, Tirone said. “Once this election is over I’ll be siding back with the Democrats but for this one I gotta go with him,” Tirone said. The sign upset neighbors earlier this year, as a majority of the laundromat’s customers are Latino. The situation spawned front-page coverage in the Boston Globe and a radio story from
WGBH’s Philip Martin that played to a global audience through Public Radio International. Neighbors told reporters Trump’s rhetoric made them fearful of a wave of deportations or of hate-fueled attacks like the beating of a Mexican immigrant homeless man in Boston last August. “People are legitimately worried,” Eva Millona, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said at the time. That put the Soap Box laundromat, with its prominent location on a busy corner in Eastie, in the spotlight. Tirone said the attention didn’t hurt his business. “It brought more customers, because a lot of Trump supporters came to the laundromat after the stories,” Tirone said in an interview last week. “It
didn’t hurt me.” Tirone, who believes Trump could overcome long odds and win in Massachusetts, said he supports Trump because he believes the candidate would bring more manufacturing jobs back to the country. He doesn’t support Trump’s aggressive immigration positions, he said, and he dismissed the candidate’s more outrageous comments as “stupid” and that he “just does that to get free publicity.” Alfred “Freddy” Puopolo, a landlord who lives in Groveland, also put Trump signs on properties he owns in Eastie. Puopolo — a 69-yearold veteran who described himself as conservative politically – said he put up a half-dozen or so Trump signs on his buildings, but most were either torn down or vandalized. “That ain’t playing fair,” said Puopolo.

Revenue estimate downgrade delivers jolt to state budget talks The budget hole has grown larger. Dealing a severe blow to legislative negotiators charged with reaching a state budget accord this month, the Baker administration said Tuesday this year’s state budget hole has grown larger and estimates of revenues available for next year’s budget might be off by as much as $750 million. The administration filed an updated financial disclosure statement on Tuesday predicting for state investors that tax collections will finish the current budget year $320 million to $370 million below benchmarks, and expected tax revenues for fiscal 2017 are now likely to run $450 million to $750 million below the expectations that Baker and
budget writers have been using all year. While the administration is confident that it can manage through the tax revenue shortfall for the current budget year without layoffs, emergency cuts or the use of reserve funds, Administration and Finance Secretary Kristen Lepore urged lawmakers to carefully consider spending as it negotiates a final fiscal 2017 budget. The House and Senate have each approved fiscal 2017 budgets of roughly $39.5 billion, which were drafted with the expectation that tax collections would rise by $1.1 billion. “As the budget process wraps up, it is important for the administration and our partners in the legislature to remain proactive and make adjustments in spending in line with ex-

pected revenues,” Lepore said in a statement. Stung by sluggish collections in April and May that fell well below benchmarks and opened a $311 million hole in the current budget with just one month left on the fiscal year, lawmakers have acknowledged the need to be careful as they craft a budget for next year. The conference committee — led by Rep. Brian Dempsey and Sen. Karen Spilka — met for the first time Friday to begin negotiations over a final spending plan for next year. Both branches of Legislature passed budgets built on revenue projections agreed to in May that anticipated 4.3 percent growth next year, but now may have to use the limited discretion they have to adjust line-item spending to account for
UPPER LIMIT OF THE POSSIBLE DEFICIT the new projections. Attributing the shortfall to lower investment returns, stock market volatility and “safe harbor rules” that allow filers to estimate 2016 payments based on actual 2015 tax bills, the administration said Massachusetts is not alone in feeling the budgetary impacts of the broader economic trends, but insisted the state is in a “relatively better position.” The administration said income and sales tax collections “remain healthy.” Dominick Ianno, chief of staff for the Executive Office of Administration
and Finance, told mayors and municipal administrators on Tuesday that the economy is “not growing maybe as fast as we thought.” Referring to the fiscal 2017 tax revenue shortfall that could approach $750 million, Ianno said, “That’s a big number and we have a budget process we’re still going through with the Legislature.” Lepore convened a private summit of Bay State economists and experts last Monday to examine the undercurrents that led to tax collections in April and May falling below the Baker administration’s expectations. Thousands of Boston nurses voted Monday to approve what would be the largest nurses strike in Massachusetts history. About 3,300 nurses at Brigham and Women’s Hospital authorized the one-day strike, which will be the first in Boston in more than 20 years. The move follows nine months of contract negotiations in which both the union and hospital have been unable to agree on wages, health benefits and time off, Boston.com reported. Trish Powers, chair of the MNA bargaining unit, said the daylong strike would render the hospital “inoperable.” “They are taking a stand for the Brigham Way, for nursing excellence and safe patient care,” Powers said in a statement. “When a corporation makes billions of dollars in revenue and hundreds of millions in profits, there is no reason why it should reduce nurse staffing, impact the quality of care for our patients and reduce nurse benefits.” The hospital says it has proposed a contract that is “fair, competitive, market-based and in line with operational and budgetary constraints.” Ninety-five percent of the registered nurses who are represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association voted for the strike, according to
State House News Service. Both sides said they have held 19 bargaining sessions to reach an agreement on a new contract, most recently on June 1. The nurses’ last contract expired Sept. 30, 2015, according to the union. Now that the union membership has authorized the strike, its bargaining unit must set a date for the one-day strike and give the hospital at least 10 days notice. The earliest the strike could take place is June 24, according to the hospital. “We sincerely hope that we can reach a fair and reasonable contract and avoid a strike,” Dr. Ron Walls, executive vice president and CEO of Brigham and Women’s Health Care, said in a statement. “Our focus, however, remains on providing safe, high-quality care to our patients, and we will be ready to do so should a strike occur.” The hospital this month activated its Strike Planning Incident Command Structure to develop “a detailed operational and tactical plan to manage a strike, including contracting experienced nurses through a highly reputable agency,” the hospital said in a statement. If the nurses go on strike, the hospital said it would hire 700 temporary professional nurses to replace them for the duration of the strike. State House News Service contributed to this report.

New giant hockey stick unveiled at Bruins practice facility A massive-size hockey stick that will be visible from the Massachusetts Turnpike was revealed Tuesday morning at the Bruins’ new training facility. A crane lowered the oversized stick, a 68-foot replica of a Warrior Covert QRL hockey stick, into position at the Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, CBS Boston reported.
The new facility is expected to open in September, according to the EagleTribune, which described the practice space as part of a larger development called Boston Landing that will incorporate area for retail, offices and a Boston Celtics training location. The replica stick was constructed by Diamond Iron Works in Lawrence, CBS added. It had been
scheduled to be hoisted into its final position on Monday, but those plans were changed due to high winds in the area. Once it is finally in place, the stick will be visible to motorists on the Massachusetts Turnpike, the Eagle-Tribune added. The giant stick will be rewrapped each summer to promote the latest model hockey sticks. JASON NUCKOLLS

Obama, Clinton criticize Trump for proposed ban on Muslims Obama and Hillary Clinton made nearly simultaneous speeches responding to Trump, who is soon to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. President Barack Obama lambasted Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim immigrants on Tuesday in an angry denunciation of the Republican presidential candidate’s response to the Orlando nightclub massacre. The president and Hillary Clinton, the Democrat he has endorsed to succeed him in the Nov. 8 general election, made nearly simultaneous speeches responding to Trump, the New York mogul who is soon to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. Clearly annoyed, Obama used a speech at the Treasury Department to respond to Trump’s proposed suspension of immigration from countries with a “history of terrorism” in response to the killing of 49 people early on Sunday in Orlando, Florida. The gunman was U.S.-born Omar Mateen, 29, whose parents immigrated from Afghanistan. The president, without mentioning Trump by name, dismissed the Republican’s criticism of Obama for not using the term “radical Islamic terrorism” to describe Islamic State militants. Obama called the phrase a political distraction. “What exactly would using this label accomplish, what exactly would it change?” Obama said. “Someone seriously thinks we don’t know who we’re fighting? …

“We now have proposals from the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States to bar all Muslims from immigrating to America. We hear language that singles out immigrants and suggests entire religious communities are complicit in violence. … Where does this stop?” President Obama There’s no magic to the phrase ‘radical Islam.’ It’s a political talking point.” Obama, who canceled a joint appearance with Clinton planned on Wednesday in Wisconsin due to the events in Orlando, appeared to be enjoying his role in the campaign to select his successor. He tangled with Trump in 2011, producing his birth certificate to refute Trump’s claim that the president was not born in the United States. Clinton, Obama’s former secretary of state, addressed supporters in Pittsburgh. The candidate said Trump’s proposal bolstered her case that he was temperamentally unfit to serve as president, saying the commander in chief “is a job that demands a calm, collected and digni-
fied response” to events like the Orlando massacre. Clinton noted that Trump seemed to suggest on Monday in a television interview that Obama might have somehow been responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, a point that Trump said he did not make. “I have to ask: Will responsible Republican leaders stand up to their presumptive nominee or will they stand by his accusation about our president?” she said. The biting criticism was likely to increase the discomfort among many establishment Republican leaders about Trump with little more than a month until party figures gather in Cleveland to formally nominate him. US probes reports that Orlando shooter was gay Omar Mateen, who was shot dead by police after a threehour standoff early on Sunday, left behind a tangled trail of possible motives. Investigators on Tuesday were digging into what motivated a Florida man to slaughter 49 people at a gay nightclub, including evidence he had become absorbed in militant Islamist ideas and reports he might have struggled with his own sexual identity. Federal investigators have said Mateen was likely self-radicalized and there is no evidence that he received any instruction or aid from outside groups such as Islamic State. Mateen, 29, was a U.S. citizen, born in New York of Afghan immigrant parents. “He appears to have been an angry, disturbed, unstable young man who became radicalized,” President Barack Obama told reporters after a meeting of the National Security Council. One official familiar with the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said investigators are only beginning to delve into the contents of Mateen’s cellphone and other electronic devices. The source
said they believe Mateen browsed militant Islamic material on the internet for two years or more before the Orlando shootings. Mateen’s wife attempted to talk him out of the attack, NBC News reported on Tuesday, citing officials familiar with her comments to the FBI. Soon after the attack, Mateen’s father indicated that his son had harbored strong anti-gay feelings. He recounted an incident when his son became angry when he saw two men kissing in downtown Miami while out with his wife and young son. The Orlando killings came six months after the massacre of 14 people in San Bernardino, California, by a married couple professing Islamist militant ideologies. Angel Colon, who was in Pulse with friends at the time of Mateen’s attack, described hearing gunfire and falling to the floor, shot in the left leg. “I couldn’t walk at all,” Colon told a reporters at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he is one of 27 survivors being treated. “All I could do was lay down. People were running over me.” Colon said he had a hopeful moment when Mateen went into a bathroom — where he later took hostages — but the gunman then emerged,
“I look over and he shoots the girl next to me and I was just there laying down and thinking, ‘I’m next, I’m dead.’” Colon
systematically making his way through the club shooting people who were already down, apparently to ensure they were dead. Mateen shot him twice more, one bullet apparently aimed for Colon’s head striking his hand, and another hitting his hip, Colon recalled. “I was just prepared to stay there laying down so he wouldn’t know I was alive,” Colon said. When police drove Mateen back into a restroom, an officer dragged Colon to safety, he said. Two U.S. officials, both of whom have been briefed regularly on the investigation and requested anonymity to discuss it, said that if it emerged that Mateen led a secret double life or had gay impulses that conflicted with his religious beliefs, it might have been a factor in explaining his motive. Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ goes on trial from the 1967 instrumental “Taurus by the band Spirit. U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner in Los Angeles said in April that a jury might find “substantial similarity between the first two minutes of “Stairway and “Taurus, and to let it decide whether Plant and Page were liable for copyright infringement. Trial in the case was set to begin Tuesday with jury selection, followed by opening arguments. The lawsuit was brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for the late Randy Wolfe, also known as Randy California, Spirit’s guitarist and composer of “Taurus. Skidmore said Page may have been inspired to write “Stairway for Led Zeppelin after hearing Spirit perform “Taurus while the bands toured together in 1968 and 1969, but that Wolfe never received credit. US court backs landmark internet equal-access rules A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit backed the Federal Communications Commission’s so-called net neutrality rules put in place last year to make internet service providers treat all internet traffic equally.
Net neutrality is a major issue for broadband providers like Verizon, Comcast and AT&T, which fear the rules may make it harder to manage internet traďŹƒc and make investment to provide additional capacity less likely. GETTY IMAGES
A U.S. appeals court Tuesday upheld the Obama administration’s landmark rules barring internet service providers from obstructing or slowing down consumer access to web content, dealing a blow to big cable and mobile phone companies. The rules prohibited broadband providers from giving or selling access to speedy internet, essentially a “fast lane on the web’s information superhighway. In siding with the FCC, the court treated the internet like a public utility and opened the door to further government internet regulations. The ruling was a big victory for President
Barack Obama, a strong advocate of net neutrality rules who has said the internet long has been organized around principles of openness, fairness and freedom without gatekeepers or “toll roads. But the fight may not be over. The internet services providers that sued to block the regulations said they would appeal either to the full appellate court or to the Supreme Court, and telecommunications industry groups said they would redouble efforts to get Congress to limit the FCC’s authority. Opponents of the regulations said the FCC exceeded its authority and condemned the ruling as an endorsement of invest-
ment-chilling public-utility regulation. Democrats in Congress praised the ruling. But Sen. John Thune, a South Dakota Republican who chairs the Commerce Committee, said the decision upholds FCC “restrictions designed for the monopoly-telephone era. He said the Republican-led Congress needs to step in to overturn a decision that results in “a highly political agency micromanaging the internet ecosystem. The ruling boosted the FCC in its bid to complete action on major internet privacy rules before the end of the year. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said the “ruling is a victory for consumers and innovators who deserve unfettered access to the entire web, and it ensures the internet remains a platform for unparalleled innovation, free expression and economic growth. The telecommunications industry trade asso-
ciation US Telecom, which led the legal challenge, said the court failed to recognize “the significant legal failings of the FCC rules that “we believe will replace a consumerdriven internet with a government-run internet, threatening innovation and investment in years to come. The court also rejected legal arguments from opponents that the rules should not apply to mobile phone web use or that they violated the constitutional free-speech rights of internet service providers. The decision was a victory for content providers like Netflix and Yelp, which have worried that access to customers could be limited without net neutrality. FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat, said the rules mean “a startup in the heartland of America can compete on equal footing with an established multinational corporation. REUTERS

Is this Justin Bieber’s new GF? It looks like Justin Bieber isn’t just loving himself these days. The 22-yearold pop singer reportedly flew “Transformers 4” actress Nicola Peltz out to visit him in Canada, where he is on tour. The two were photographed getting into a car together in Toronto. “Justin and Nicola are definitely dating and it’s really heating up,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com. Though they’ve been keeping their meetings on the down low, this isn’t the first time Bieber has been linked to the 21-year-old actress. They were first spotted getting dinner together in Beverly Hills back in May. Given that the Canadian heartthrob will be on the road for his “Pur-

The fourth annual Boston TechJam occupies City Hall Plaza this Thursday afternoon. The event is part expo and part festival, with dozens of tech companies setting up booths alongside food trucks, street games and a live concert. Consider it a networking block party for startups, established companies, students, investors and, last year, anybody who wanted to ride a mechanical shark. Mark Lorion, chief marketing and products officer at Apperian, a mobile app management company based in Boston, co-founded
TechJam in 2013. “People come out to have fun and they bring their team, and the byproduct is, [they] meet a hundred new people,” he says. According to Lorion, Boston’s local tech industry is underappreciated and often overshadowed by other tech centers like Silicon Valley. TechJam, he says, is a chance to celebrate local innovation. “We’ve got an incredible number of technically skilled and savvy people coming out of [local universities],” he says. “The willingness to help other companies out, to help out entrepreneurs, to make connections, to buy and source our technology locally is not matched in any other region.” While previous years’ events were 21-and-up events, this year’s Tech-

Brooklyn is for lovers Emma Straub is cool with her buzzy new book being called a beach read.

In many ways, watching your neighborhood transform over the years feels like watching your children grow up. Sometimes, you feel helpless about these changes, other times they mirror your own growth. Author Emma Straub is no stranger to this shift. “I remember when I graduated from college, it seemed like half of my graduating class moved to Brooklyn and I had thiss weird freak out where I was like, ‘But it’s not theirs, what are they doing?’” she recalls. “I got very possessive. In general, I’m not a possessive person. But I got very possessive about ut my city.” Straub, a New York native, grew up and started ed a family of her own all while living in various corners of Brooklyn. She uses the borough as a character in her latest novel, “Modern Lovers,” set in Brooklyn’s quaint Ditmas Park neighborhood. The novel traces the paths of Andrew, Zoe and Elizabeth, who have known one another since their punk rock days in college. Now approaching their 50s, they are forced to take a step back and re-evaluate their relationships and their priorities. Given its perceptive take on youth and growing older — and its spot-on depiction of gentrifying Brooklyn — “Modern Lovers” is a must-read this summer. We spoke with Straub about the joys of modern love in Brooklyn. What was the inspiration behind “Modern Lovers”? I was personally inspired by having a middle-aged neighbor who played the drums in a local rock ’n’ roll band. I would often hear him practicing. I thought it was so cool and fun that he was a grown-up person with a family and a life who still cared enough about playing music to do it with his friends. I tried

to write a short story about that. And then I realized the story I was interested wasn’t really about the band itself. It was about marriages and parenthood and all those other things.

novel coming out in June called “Rich and Pretty.” Another friend of mine, Stuart Nadler, has a book coming out in July called “The Inseparables.” And I’m also really looking forward to reading the new Ann Patchett. She’s one of my heroes.
Throughout the book, there are ordinary moments that are strangely compelling. Why did you write about these? That’s what I like to read about. Sometimes I like a good crime story/mystery novel, but mostly what I like to read are books about people living their lives and their relationships. I never worry about having a story that seems too quiet, because I think that’s how life is. When you go and meet a friend for dinner and they tell you the stories of whatever has happened to them since you saw them last, those are the stories you listen to and are interested in — stories about people you care about. It’s not about asteroids and monsters, although sometimes asteroids and monsters are fun. I don’t think that writers get to choose their milieu.
How have you experienced the changes in Brooklyn that you allude to in the book? I’ve seen the borough change enormously. When I started high school, Brooklyn was this far-off land. I went to summer camp with a lot of kids from Brooklyn, and I never saw them during the year because it felt like going to the moon from where I lived [in Manhattan]. Now, it doesn’t feel that way. I think, like, all changes to places that you love, sometimes it seems wonderful and, like, a neighborhood is becoming more robust. And sometimes it seems terrible and, like, there’s sort of an overdevelopment tipping point where it starts driving people out because the rent gets too high. I don’t think it can keep going like this forever. I think there is this Brooklyn fever pitch that’s happening right now, and once that passes, it’ll be nice.

Real estate, as they say, is all about location, location, location. But life, or course, is never that simple, especially when family is involved. These days, even the four-legged members get a say. In a recent survey, the American Pet Products Association found that 44 percent of households in the U.S. own at least one dog, and the market is responding. In California, Standard Pacific Homes offers a 170-square foot “pet suite” — complete with a bathing station, laundry facilities, a flatscreen TV and dog-run access — as an option in its Orange County development. Manhattan high-rises have been catering to pet owners

ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN PET PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION, AMERICANS WILL SPEND AN ESTIMATED $62.75 BILLION ON THEIR PETS THIS YEAR, UP FROM $60.28 BILLION IN 2015. for years, although amenities like the Mercedes House’s Canine Club — with “cage-free” doggie day care — are changing the game. While an on-site doggie spa may seem a little extreme, taking your pet’s needs into consideration is a smart move. “More and more, my clients bring up their pets,” says interior designer Nan Ruvel, who has created everything from specialized mudrooms for messy pups to custom litter-box “bathrooms” for cats. “And I encourage that. You really want to make sure the space works for the entire family.”

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE
Be realistic Like children, animals put some limitations on decor. “With pets, it’s important to be realistic, and I make sure my clients understand that,” says Ruvel, who shares her home with two cats and two dogs. Her tip: “No wall-to-wall carpet.”
Fabrics are key Many a couch has met its demise at the claws of a scratch-happy cat. But if you shop smart, you can extend the life of your furniture. “Most people think the durable fabrics are better, but whenever you have a nubby weave,
Product picks that’s something claws will hook into, and leather tears very easily,” says Ruvel. “Cheaper fabrics, especially microfibers, are easier to clean and hold up better to pets.”
Make a floor plan Accidents happen, which is why wood floors have long-been the goldstandard for pet owners. “Choose a hard wood, and avoid anything too dark that will show scratches easily,” advises Ruvel. If you can’t quite give up your carpets, Ruvel recommends opting for wool.
If you own a cat, you know the deal: Your possessions are, at all times, subject to its whims. Providing a scratching alternative — especially one that’s more fun to destroy than your love seat — may save your furniture. Pet supply company Drs. Foster and Smith offers products selected by veterinarians, including this couch-shaped scratching post. $60, drsfostersmith.com

What Are the Most Common Cancers in Men?
Dana-Farber experts recommend: UÊAge 18-40: Screening is usually not required. UÊÊAge 40-49: You should discuss your risk level with your physician. Screening is recommended if you are considered high risk. African-American men and men who have a family history of prostate cancer are at a greater risk and should discuss PSA testing with their physicians. UÊÊAge 50+: Discuss screening with your physician. The best protection against prostate cancer is a healthy lifestyle. Follow this game plan for preventing, screening, and treating prostate cancer. 2. Lung and bronchus cancer There will be an estimated 117,920 new cases in men in the U.S. in 2016. Both smokers and non-smokers are at risk for lung cancer. Talk to your physician aboutt screening and prevention if you experience symptoms of chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, bloody mucus, and a lingering cough.
Information about cancer risk can help you make informed decisions about screening and prevention strategies. As we recognize National i ½ÃÊ i> Ì Ê 7ii ]Ê i>À Ê >L ÕÌÊ Ì iÊ ÃÌÊ common cancers in men in the United States and the options for prevention and treatment. 1. Prostate cancer There will be an estimated 180,890 new cases in the U.S. in 2016. One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Doctors can screen for early signs of prostate cancer with prostatespecific antigen testing, which can detect elevated levels of a protein in the blood that may indicate prostate cancer. There are benefits and drawbacks to PSA testing; it can help detect and treat cancer at an early stage, but it is not always accurate. False readings can lead to unnecessary treatments, including biopsies that can increase
Smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer. You can call the Smoker’s Helpline (1800-QUIT-NOW) to learn about programs to help you quit smoking, or you can discuss how to quit with your physician. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends annual lung cancer screenings for current smokers, those who have quit smoking within the last 15 years, and those ages 55-80 who have smoked a pack a day for 30 years. Screenings consist of a lowdose CT scan. To further reduce the risk of lung cancer, maintain a healthy diet and avoid secondhand smoke and exposure to carcinogens such as radon, asbestos, and soot. Radon exposure is the main cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and can be detected inexpensively with an inhome testing kit.

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include age, a history of polyps, having inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a family history of colorectal cancer, physical inactivity, obesity, and frequent consumption of red meat and processed meats. Studies show that a daily dose of aspirin may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by up to 40 percent. Consult your physician before beginning an aspirin regimen. When it is detected early, this disease is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, so it’s important to follow screening guidelines. A urinalysis, which tests for blood in the urine, can be used to detect bladder cancers early but may not be useful as a routine screening test. Urine cytology may be able to detect cancer cells in urine. 5. Melanoma There will be an estimated 46,870 new cases in men in the U.S. in 2016. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK.
Your Eyes Deserve A Surgeon with
VISION!
The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts!

McHale in a 2007 trade, made the Celtics immediate championship contenders again after a 21-year title drought. Also, the two star players in the league right now that Ainge lusts over most are Kevin Durant and Kevin Love. The chances that Ainge is able to lure Durant to Boston this summer are about as good right now as Donald Trump asking Mitt Romney to be his running mate (read: not good). Durant’s best shot at getting to the NBA Finals next year is staying put in Oklahoma City. It also makes great economical sense for him to stay in OKC. With the Durant-to-Boston dream mostly dead, the question remains as to how Ainge and the Celtics can possibly get an impact player on the level of a Garnett or Durant here this summer? The sad answer is, they can’t. There are no other players on the trade or free agent market right now that are on an MVP-level like a KG was and a KD is. The Celtics may be stuck with having to go after Love. Everything you hear says that Ainge and Celtics ownership is going for a home run, or at least a triple, this summer. They want to at least be in the Eastern Conference Finals next season. Love will be the most attainable “star” player out there this summer as LeBron James and the Cavs will not want him back in Cleveland. Love has been atrocious in the Finals so far, and is the square peg in the round hole that is holding the Cavs back from winning it all. In Cleveland’s Game 5 road win at Golden State on Monday night, which featured Herculean efforts by LeBron and Kyrie Irving, Love scored two points, had three
rebounds and one assist in 33 minutes of play. Even if the Cavs’ game plan going in was to simply “give it to LeBron and Kyrie and get the hell out of the way,” a twopoint game in 33 minutes of play is alarming. The good news for the Celtics is that the Cavs’ asking price for Love is going to go dramatically down. Cleveland wants players who can contribute now and the Celtics can offer a pu pu platter of guys (Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, Kelly Olynyk, Marcus Smart, Jared Sullinger) that would fit exceptionally well in a Cavs system that is fueled by LeBron and Irving. Ainge might not even have to let go of this year’s No. 3 pick — a statement that got me laughed off the internet this past February at the deadline. So, let’s say the Celtics do give up a group of their top players for Love. What does that leave them with? A nucleus of Love, Isaiah Thomas and this No. 3 pick is nice, but it’s still not championship level. Ainge would have to trade away the No. 3 pick for one of these other fringe superstars on the trade market or finally convince a star free agent to come to Boston to even get to Eastern Conference Finals-level status. So, expectations for Aingeexecuted “fireworks” this summer should again be tempered. They should be tempered not because of a lack of relatively big transactions but they should be tempered because of the potential return. See, Kevin Garnett and Kevin Durant have won MVP trophies. Kevin Love never has, and never will. He’s the lowest impact Kevin of the lot.
