PAUL RYAN DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM TRUMP MUSLIM BAN
1
House speaker Paul Ryan, the top U.S. elected Republican, on Tuesday distanced himself from presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims from a variety of countries in a further sign of establishment unease with Trump’s agenda. Trump gave his first speech on the Orlando, Florida, massacre Monday, a day after the attack at a gay nightclub that was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. modern history. The New York mogul said if elected Nov. 8, he would temporarily suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is “a proven history of terrorism.” In a subsequent tweet, he said he was referring to “nations tied to Islamic terror.” REUTERS
JUROR IN STANFORD SEX ASSAULT TRIAL: ‘JUSTICE NOT SERVED’
2
A juror in the Stanford University sexual assault case wrote to the judge expressing his disappointment over what was seen by many as a very lenient sentence handed down to former student-athlete Brock Turner. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky is facing a recall campaign following public anger over his decision to sentence Turner, 20, to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman after a party. The juror, who requested to remain anonymous, said he was disappointed and “vehemently” disagreed with the June 2 sentence, according to the letter, which was posted online late Monday by the Palo Alto Weekly newspaper. Prosecutors had sought a six-year prison term for Turner after he was convicted on three felony counts of sexual assault for the January 2015 attack. REUTERS

Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and gained access to the entire database of opposition research on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, the committee and security researchers said Tuesday. The intrusion is emblematic of the sophistication of Russian hackers, who have long been viewed by intelligence officials as the most talented of U.S. adversaries in cyberspace. Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, confirmed the breach to Reuters. It was first reported by the Washington Post. REUTERS
Trendy Philly nabes A side-by-side neighborhood comparison of median rents in the two cities. LEN MANIACE @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Though New York’s been winning the baseball rivalry between the Mets and the Phillies lately, when it comes to bargains on rental apartments, Philadelphia comes out on top. New York City neighborhoods considered working-class only a decade or two ago now outprice apartments in some of Philadelphia’s poshest sections, according to data provided by NeighborhoodX, a real estate research and analytics startup. For instance, the median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in gentrifying but stillgritty Long Island City in Queens was $2,900, well above the $1,900 figure for Philadelphia’s longfashionable Rittenhouse Square and Logan Square residential districts. Comparable neighborhoods where New York’s elite might be drawn are Manhattan’s Upper West Side, with a median onebedroom rent of $3,600, or classic brownstone Brooklyn Heights, where one-bedroom rents aver-

Millennials want NYC, but Perhaps millennials don’t know what’s best for them. In a recent survey, one in five Gen Y-ers said New York is their ideal city, with fewer than 1 percent saying the same of Philadelphia. But research has shown that Philly has outranked its more metropolitan competitors when it comes to qualities millennials say they value. Abodo, an apartmentsearch site, surveyed 2,000 people born between 1982 and 1998. Respondents were asked to rate 20 qualities,
including a thriving job market, rent and housing market affordability, presence of hiking trails and quality of pizza, on a scale of one to 10, from least to greatest importance. Despite common assertions that millennials are “lazy” or have “lesser work ethic,” the top three qualities Generation Y values most are economic in nature: a thriving job market (8.19), affordable rent (7.94) and affordable home prices (7.55), followed by parks or hiking trails (6.52) and nonchain local restaurants (6.49). When asked to pick
a city they thought was the best choice, nearly 20 percent chose New York City. San Francisco came in second, with 10.3 percent, and one in 10 chose the Pacific Northwest, with Seattle and Portland each fetching just above 9

percent. Philadelphia rang in at No. 17 with 0.89 percent, far below Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Washington. When analysts broke down the preferred city of each gender and age group, New York ranked No. 1 across all ages and both genders. Philadelphia was found to be in the Top 10 only among respondents aged 18-22. The city actually came in 10th. Ironically, Philadelphia hit 95 percent of millennials’ criteria, according to Abodo’s

cheaper than gritty NYC ones age $3,100. For those seeking a neighborhood with a young, creative vibe, New York’s traditional answer has been the East Village, with Williamsburg gaining street cred the last 20 years. In Philadelphia, there’s Fishtown. This working-class neighborhood of narrow streets and row houses has sprouted studios, galleries, bars, restaurants and music venues. While the median one-bedroom in Fishtown rents for $1,600, those apartments in Williamsburg and the East Village go for the nonbohemian figures of $3,200 and $2,900, respectively. Fishtown is even a bargain compared to Staten Island’s St. George area, where the ferry docks and median one bedrooms go for $1,800 a month. Demand is a factor in NYC’s pricey pads. New York is growing much faster than the City of Brotherly Love. In two decades New York’s population rose by 1.2 million people to 8.55 million in 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In the same time, Philadelphia’s population rose by 71,000 to 1.57 million. Put another way, New
York City added enough people to fill up threequarters of Philadelphia. That doesn’t mean there aren’t relative bargains in New York, only that they are further from Midtown’s jobs, the city’s cultural attractions and even basic amenities, such as supermarkets. Mott Haven in the Bronx is one such area, where a median onebedroom goes for $1,500 a month. Much of the housing is in tenements and New York City public housing developments. But Mott Haven also has three historic residential districts and some sections of the neighborhood are showing signs of gentrification. Housing is being renovated and new shops opening, including that harbinger of change, gourmet coffee shops. Two opened since April. One needn’t go so far, nor do without as much, in Pennsylvania’s biggest city. The median one-bedroom rents for $1,100 in Spruce Hill, a neighborhood just west of University City, a cluster of academic institutions which includes the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania.

Philly is better compiled research. New York City, Boston, Washington, Portland and Seattle all tied at No. 2 with 90 percent. Based on its research, Abodo found Philly to have a good job market, affordable rent and home prices, quality pizza, walkability, an LGBTQfriendly community, quality public transportation and a lake, river or beach nearby. The only mark Philly misses is a highly rated public school system. New York City, by contrast, was found to have neither affordable rent
nor a highly rated school system. In fact, the only city determined to have a quality public school system was Seattle. It’s not breaking news that rents in New York City and San Francisco are expensive, but it seems the rate keeps going up. A study released last month by Smart Asset found residents in NYC need a six-figure salary to live comfortably: an average of $158,229 annually. By contrast, Philadelphians can live comfortably on a $65,100 salary. ALEXIS SACHDEV

vs. Geno’s and dog lovers vs. cat people, may never end. In Pennsylvania, one such rivalry has stirred “tribal loyalties,” igniting emotion and anger from all corners of the state: Which is the better convenience store, Sheetz or Wawa? Public Policy Polling conducted a survey on the important issues: background checks for firearm purchases, opinions on Chip Kelly and which convenience store reigns supreme. Pennsylvanians have spoken: 45 percent of respondents prefer Sheetz, while just 35 percent think Wawa wins. Another 20 percent aren’t sure. (They probably never even experienced Hoagiefest.) But could the numbers lie? Wawa’s Facebook page has 1,321,429 likes. Sheetz trails at 1,295,242. But Sheetz has more than double the Twitter followers as Wawa (305,157 to 155,853). Wawa was voted the best convenience store in

America; Sheetz came in third, according to Market Force Information. But Wawa’s cultlike following is no secret. So much so that Mashable glimpsed into the tight-knit community of Wawa devotees in a piece simply titled “The Cult of Wawa.” “I think it’s just kind of like the all-American store,” customer Paula Turnbach told Mashable earlier this year. “It’s like, apple pie and Wawa, you know?” Then there was that guy who took an engagement photo shoot with a hoagie. That said, Sheetz might beat Wawa at its munchies game. Looks like the rivalry continues, after all.
MURDER Man sentenced to 22 to 44 years for murder of transgender woman A man will now face 22 to 44 years in prison after pleading guilty to the fatal stabbing of a transgender woman in North Philadelphia last year. Raheam Felton, 32, stabbed London Kiki Chanel, 21, in a rage after learning the young woman told his girlfriend, key witness Mayai Bankz, that he had been “sexually touching her,” Philly.com reported. The attack happened after Felton returned with some Chinese takeout to the North Ingersoll Street apartment where Chanel lived. Chanel later died at the hospital from multiple stab wounds in her neck, chest and back, on May 18, according to the report. At the time, Felton reportedly told police an unknown assailant had attacked her. “She was such a sweet person,” Chanel’s aunt, Dimitria

Washington, reportedly told the court during victim impact statements. “She would give anything. What did she do that was so wrong?” Chanel’s family said she left Texas to live her life as a woman in Philadelphia, but had plans to return to Texas to reunite with her estranged family. “I didn’t understand, but the world changes and I had to learn to change with it,” Veronica Allen, Chanel’s mother, reportedly told the court. “I knew Marcus, but I didn’t get to know London, the beautiful woman she became. Year after West Philly flood, locals still live with the damage Some residents say they haven’t received any compensation for effects of burst 130-year-old water main. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
The effects of a burst water main that flooded homes and businesses around 52nd and Wyalusing is still being felt by some residents, one year later. “To date, I’ve not been reimbursed,” said Deborah Smith, 58, the owner of Smitty’s Millcreek Tavern, which saw water up to the edge of the bar during the flood on June 14, 2015. “We closed for seven months. I can’t even

tell how much business I lost because of that.” Smith was one of many residents in the area who were swamped last year when a 130-yearold, 36-inch-diameter pipe burst early on a Sunday. The same area was previously flooded in 2004 and 1994. Steve Waddy, 69, who lives around the corner from Smith’s Tavern, saw his basement bedroom
filled with water during the flood. All of his clothing, furniture and appliances were ruined, including cartons of stamp and coin collections. His collection of swords were rusted, and three cockatoos he kept as pets died. “A year later, it’s still a mess. I feel like I’m living in a Third World country,” said Waddy, a former Marine who served in Vietnam. “This really tore me
apart.” Waddy produced a city letter from May offering him about $27,000 as compensation. He said he has already paid $20,000 to replace damaged possessions, and estimated full repairs to the home could cost him up $100,000 more. Smith produced letters from the city showing an offer of about $55,000. Minus $19,000 in liquor
taxes for 2015, she said, She estimated she sustained $100,000 in losses. She added that she paid out of her own pocket to replace the floors, equipment in the bar, and beer and liquor stock in the basement. The tavern reopened in February. According to Barry Scott, deputy director of finance for risk management, the city has settled 76 claims arising from
the flood, and 21 remain open. “We are still working actively with those folks to help them move on so this is no longer a drag to their lives,” Scott said. But he added the process has been complicated, with some homes seeing change in ownership, and new claims related to the flood being filed as recently as last week. But both Waddy and Smith, who obtained lawyers to assist with their claims, said the claims process was confusing and difficult. Both described Water Department staff carting out their waterlogged possessions after the flood, then requesting a full list of the tossed possessions as part of the claims process. “It was a struggle,” Smith said. “I’m just grateful to still be here.”

Philadelphia police are looking for a man they believe robbed a Wawa convenience store on two separate occasions. The first robbery occurred on June 8 at 9:30 p.m. at 10550 Knights Road. After stowing away an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect left the store and was last reportedly seen on Knights Road heading toward Frankford Avenue. Obama, Clinton criticize Trump for proposed ban on Muslims Obama and Hillary Clinton made nearly simultaneous speeches responding to Trump, who is soon to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.
President Barack Obama lambasted Donald Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim immigrants in an angry denunciation of the Republican presidential candidate’s response to the Orlando nightclub massacre. The president and Hillary Clinton, the Democrat he has endorsed to succeed him in the Nov. 8 general election, made nearly simultaneous speeches responding to Trump, the New York mo-
gul who is soon to become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. Clearly annoyed, Obama used a speech at the Treasury Department to respond to Trump’s proposed suspension of immigration from countries with a “history of terrorism in response to the killing of 49 people early on Sunday in Orlando, Florida. The gunman was U.S.-born Omar Mateen, 29, whose parents immigrated from Afghanistan. The president, without mentioning Trump by name, dismissed the Republican’s criticism of Obama for not using the term “radical Islamic terrorism to describe Islamic State militants. Obama called the phrase a political distraction. “What exactly would using this label accomplish, what exactly would

“We now have proposals from the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States to bar all Muslims from immigrating to America. We hear language that singles out immigrants and suggests entire religious communities are complicit in violence. ‌ Where does this stop?â€? President Obama
it change?â€? Obama said. “Someone seriously thinks we don’t know who we’re fighting? ‌ There’s no magic to the phrase ‘radical Islam.’ It’s a political talking point.â€? Obama, who canceled a joint appearance with Clinton planned on Wednesday in Wisconsin due to the events in Orlando, appeared to be enjoying his role in the campaign to select his successor. He tangled with Trump in 2011, producing his birth certificate to refute Trump’s claim that the president was not born in the United States. Clinton, Obama’s former secretary of state, addressed supporters in Pittsburgh. The candidate said Trump’s proposal bolstered her case that he was temperamentally unfit to serve as president, saying the commander in chief
“is a job that demands a calm, collected and dignified response to events like the Orlando massacre. Clinton noted that Trump seemed to suggest on Monday in a television interview that Obama might have somehow been responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, a point that Trump said he did not make. “I have to ask: Will responsible Republican leaders stand up to their presumptive nominee or will they stand by his accusation about our president? she said. The biting criticism was likely to increase the discomfort among many establishment Republican leaders about Trump with little more than a month until party figures gather in Cleveland to formally nominate him. US probes reports that Orlando shooter was gay Investigators were digging into what motivated a Florida man to slaughter 49 people at a gay nightclub, including evidence he had become absorbed in militant Islamist ideas and reports he might have struggled with his own sexual identity. Investigators have said Mateen was likely self-radicalized and there is no evidence that he received any instruction or aid from outside groups such as Islamic State. Mateen was a U.S. citizen, born in New York of Afghan immigrant parents. “He appears to have been an angry, disturbed, unstable young man who became radicalized,” President Barack Obama told reporters after a meeting of the National Security Council. One official familiar, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said investigators are only beginning to delve into

the contents of Mateen’s cellphone and other electronic devices. The source said they believe Mateen browsed militant Islamic material on the internet for two years or more before the shootings. Mateen’s wife attempted to talk him out of the attack, NBC News reported on Tuesday, citing officials familiar with her comments to the FBI. Soon after the attack, Mateen’s father indicated that his son had harbored strong anti-gay feelings.
He recounted an incident when his son became angry when he saw two men kissing in downtown Miami while out with his wife and young son. Angel Colon, who was in Pulse with friends at the time of Mateen’s attack, described hearing gunfire and falling to the floor, shot in the left leg. “I couldn’t walk at all,” Colon told a reporters at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he is one of 27 survivors being treated. “All I could do was lay down. People were running over me.” Colon said he had a hopeful moment when Mateen went into a bathroom — where he later took hostages — but the gunman then emerged, systematically making his way through the club shooting people who were already down, apparently to ensure they were dead. A U.S. appeals court Tuesday upheld the Obama administration’s landmark rules barring internet service providers from obstructing or slowing down consumer access to web content, dealing a blow to big cable and mobile phone companies. The rules prohibited broadband providers from giving or selling access to speedy internet, essentially a “fast lane on the web’s information superhighway.
In siding with the FCC, the court treated the internet like a public utility and opened the door to further government internet regulations. The ruling was a big victory for President Barack Obama, a strong advocate of net neutrality rules who has said the internet long has been organized around principles of openness, fairness and freedom without gatekeepers or “toll roads. But the fight may not be over. The internet services providers that sued to block the regulations said they would appeal either to the full appellate court or to the Supreme Court, and telecommunications industry groups said they would redouble efforts to get Congress to limit the FCC’s authority. Opponents of the regulations said the FCC exceeded its authority and condemned the ruling
Net neutrality is a major issue for broadband providers like Verizon, Comcast and AT&T, which fear the rules may make it harder to manage internet traďŹƒc and make investment to provide additional capacity less likely. GETTY IMAGES
as an endorsement of investment-chilling publicutility regulation. Democrats in Congress praised the ruling. But Sen. John Thune, a South Dakota Republican who chairs the Commerce Committee, said the decision upholds FCC “restrictions designed for the monopoly-telephone era. He said the Republican-led Congress needs to step in to overturn a decision that results in “a highly political agency micromanaging the inter-
net ecosystem. The ruling boosted the FCC in its bid to complete action on major internet privacy rules before the end of the year. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said the “ruling is a victory for consumers and innovators who deserve unfettered access to the entire web, and it ensures the internet remains a platform for unparalleled innovation, free expression and economic growth. REUTERS

Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ goes on trial Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page appeared in a Los Angeles court for a civil trial that opened Tuesday in which they are accused of stealing the opening chords of their 1971 classic “Stairway to Heaven from another band. Plant, 67, and Page, 72, did not speak to each other or their lawyers as they appeared in federal court. Both sported long gray hair and Page wore three-piece suits. The lawsuit alleges that the opening chords of their song was stolen from the 1967 instrumental “Taurus by the band Spirit. U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner in Los Angeles said in April that a jury might find “substantial similarity between the first two minutes of “Stairway and “Taurus, and to let

Is this Justin Bieber’s new GF? It looks like Justin Bieber isn’t just loving himself these days. The 22-yearold pop singer reportedly flew “Transformers 4” actress Nicola Peltz out to visit him in Canada, where he is on tour. The two were photographed getting into a car together in Toronto. “Justin and Nicola are definitely dating and it’s really heating up,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com. Though they’ve been keeping their meetings on the down low, this isn’t the first time Bieber has been linked to the 21-yearold actress. They were first spotted getting dinner together in Beverly Hills back in May. Given that the

Heard, who was accused of making false claims for cash, says the original monetary request was “used against me to distract and divert the public away from the very serious real issue of domestic violence.” Heard’s temporary restraining order against Depp is set to bring the two to court Friday for a hearing, after which the actress’s lawyer says she is free to refile for support. The “Danish Girl” star filed for divorce May 23, with claims of physical and psychological abuse from her husband of 15 months. Following the restraining order hearing, Heard’s attorney told E! she could seek up to a “maximum of 30 months for spousal support” due to their short marriage.

Someone stole $500K from Kevin Hart Comedian Kevin Hart is not laughing. The actor was robbed of goods worth half a million dollars over the weekend, reports TMZ. Hart’s California home is located in a heavily gated community with two guards, but that didn’t stop the thief from prying open the backdoor and stealing jewelry, clothing and other personal items. This all happened while Hart and his family were in Miami promoting his new movie “Central Intelligence.” When the actor returned home, he noticed the theft and contacted authorities. Police do not
believe it was an inside job and are reviewing surveillance footage to find more information. This is the fourth celebrity robbery in the last month;
Kanye West, Black Chyna and Scott Disick have also been victims. Looks like Hart needs some “central intelligence” to crack this case.
Shia LaBeouf embarks on hitchhiking expedition
Don’t be alarmed! The rugged bearded man standing on the side of the road is not a homeless person — in fact, it’s none other than “Even Stevens” star Shia LaBeouf. And this time it seems as if he’s taken his role in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” a
bit too seriously. But why? LaBeouf is hitchhiking through the U.S. for the sake of “art.” The “Transformers” leading man and artist pals Nastja Rönkkö and Luke Turner started their adventure in May. The trio have hit cities in Utah, Detroit, New Orleans and Pennsylvania. On Sunday night, LaBeouf was spotted on a boat in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Earlier this week he was seen making his way through Minnesota. Let’s not forget, this is for art, people.
So how does one find Mr. LaBeouf ? It’s simple: A set of GPS coordinates are posted via his Twitter, @thecampaignbook, then the three friends wait for someone to pick them up. Their trip is being covered by internet hipster news outlet Vice and can be followed by visiting takemeanywhere.vice.com or with hashtag #takemeanywhere. Just yesterday, the ticker was making its way along Interstate 90, where LaBeouf was cruising through Minnesota into South Dakota.

Frances O’Connor gets her own fright night An acclaimed actress gets the chance to scream a lot in “The Conjuring 2.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Like most of the cast of “The Conjuring 2,” Frances O’Connor is not a horror actor. She’s an acclaimed thespian, the star of 1999’s “Mansfield Park” as well as Steven Spielberg’s “A.I.,” the 2002 take on “The Importance of Being Earnest” and the show “The Missing,” for which she scored a Golden Globe nomination. But like co-stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, she found shooting James Wan’s second haunted house grinder to be artistically fulfilling. O’Connor, 48, plays Peggy, the harried low-income mother of four whose English council home is (allegedly!) terrorized by an evil spirit. As a parent it must be rough getting in the headspace that Peggy goes to — not just trying
to protect her kids from potentially supernatural forces, but being so brash. I really hope I’m a better parent. [Laughs] Peggy’s not really PC in the way she parents. But she is a ’70s parent: She’s always stressed, she shouts at her kids, but ultimately she loves them so much and would protect them with her life. There’s a scene where I give my son cookies before he goes to bed, which is such a parenting no-no. I love that she does stuff like that. You’ve mostly done dramas and had only done one horror film, “Mercy,” before this. Were you itching to try this type of film? Not really. It’s kind of fun to go, “Oooh, let’s see what being in this genre is like.” But ultimately I feel it’s all the same. You’re still telling a story, though perhaps in a
Frances O’Connor, left, plays a low-income English mother whose kids are allegedly terrified by an evil spirit in “The Conjuring 2.” WARNER BROS. PICTURES
more technical way. As an actor used to characters, how did you adjust to something that’s often so technical? The scene where I’m woken up by the kids screaming and the drawers go slamming across the room — that was all one take. So it felt like it was really happening. It makes your job easier, because you can react to what’s happening at the moment. There are other moments that are very artificial and you have to generate it. You have to really concentrate and come up with the goods.
Real or make-believe? The real-life Enfield Haunting is a hotly contested case, with skeptics pointing out inconsistencies, even fakery. Where do you stand having made a movie about it? The producer got a hold of the guy who took those photos [during the alleged haunting]. He thought there was something genuinely happening in the house. Even if it wasn’t supernatural, it was maybe a kinetic force. There’s so much weight on both sides of the argument that it’s hard to know if it really happened.
It can be tough being coldly rational when you’re confronted with traumatized people who claim they’ve encountered something paranormal. Those kids, now as grown-ups, are still kind of freaked out. That event has affected the rest of their lives. Some of the footage and the photos and all these audio recordings, it’s really spooky-looking and listening to them. I don’t know. I can’t say definitively whether it happened or not. It’s very convincing if it’s not true.

Andorra gets ready to rock the The local band has won the opening performance slot a second year in a row. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

Every year, Radio 104.5 scouts Philadelphia for a local band to open its massively popular birthday show at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, a venue holding 25,000 people. For the second year in a row, Philly alternative rock band, Andorra, has won the coveted spot opening for the Lumineers, Elle King, Florence and the Machine and more. We chat with lead singer Kevin McCall about the tremendous opportunity, the band’s middle school beginnings and his “Game of Thrones doppelganger. So how does it feel to be playing the Birthday show for a second year? We are very fortunate
to be able to do it again. A lot of great things happened from our last performance. Who are you excited to meet? I’m really excited to meet Florence. It’s going to be like seeing Disney World for the first time. She has a magical element to her. The atmosphere she presents in her songs has an enchanted vibe about it. I also am excited about Elle King. Apparently she went to UArts so it would be cool to meet her. Do all the band members in Andorra go to UArts? No, just me and Dante. Michael goes to West Chester and Jordan goes to Drexel. We are all going to be juniors in the fall. It’s hard to believe you guys are still in college and you’ve achieved so much already. How did the band get started? Andorra was this idea that our drummer Jordan

and I had. We went to St. Helen’s in our middleschool years and talked about this band during recess in sixth grade. We kept playing together and had different members over the years, but now in college, we’ve really made our way. We picked
up Dante [on guitar] and Michael [on bass and vocals.] Wow! That’s a lot of history for a band. Talk about staying power. Why the name Andorra? We were friends with this guy named Bill who lived

Not at all. I did not see Sunday’s episode, but I absolutely love the show. OK, I won’t give away any spoilers! So what is Andorra working on right now? We’re putting out a new video for a song called “Four Corners. We’re doing it in a boxing ring. It’s going to be at a gym in Chester, where they did some of the last Rocky movie. Our friend Nathan Martin is directing it. What’s the song about? A lot of the themes for our upcoming album have to do with being at home, where you’re comfortable being yourself. I think it comes from me

We always talk about touring but it’s been hard with our schedules. No other city is as good as Philly for music. We like it here. It’s funny that Frenchborn, local performance artist, clown and occasional Pig Iron Theatre Co. collaborator Emmanuelle Delpech is basing her newest work, “Spinning Immigrant,” on her experience (and that of 16 other immigrants) of naturalizing to become an American citizen. “I have my passport, but I don’t know if I feel like an American,” says Delpech who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1998 and obtained citizenship in 2014. “I don’t know all of America’s parts. I do, however, feel Philadelphian, you know? I am Philadelphian.” Her FringeArts show, “Spinning Immigrant,” discusses the process of

naturalization — the vows one takes in renouncing the commitments and values of the country you were born in, in order to fully become a U.S. citizen. “For instance, I can’t fight in the name of France,” she says with a laugh. “It is about the spirit of America, the beauty of which is that anyone can become one just as I did.” Delpech interviewed immigrants from Afghanistan, Italy, Africa, Albania, Vietnam, Ireland, Germany, Mexico and other countries — “people with perspectives different than mine” — to discuss the process of becoming. She taped responses about their journey, some from people who “don’t overthink the process of naturalization, despite struggle or loneliness” to come up with one great endpoint: that home is where the heart is. “We might not be completely whole here, but we’re happy.” The voices of immigrants and the sounds of their native lands are
wound throughout “Spinning Immigrant” courtesy of Delpech’s newest skill — DJing. To learn this art, she went to Chestnut Street’s Scratch Academy where she learned from Philly DJs Cosmo Baker and Rich Media how to rock rhythms and match vocal samples to beats. “It was really hard and I’m not very good, but I get the job done,” she laughs. The fact that she can reinvent herself though, at age 43, as a DJ? That is a true metaphor for the American experience. Delpech wanted to get away from characters with “Spinning Immigrant,” despite her longtime association with being a clown for inventive pieces from her past, such as Red Noses. “I wanted to be more natural, intimate and less reliant on the physical. Plus, I really got into sound, music, voices.” Delpech began to focus on her real life experience as an immigrant and that of other immigrants from diverse cultures who came

to America, either by choice or by circumstance. “I have a connection with all immigrants.” The only character she does play however is American comic book hero, Wonder Woman. “Ah, she was always my ideal,” says Delpech of wearing the gold lightening bracelets and the redwhite-and-blue one piece. “I used to watch her when I was a kid. She was beautiful and strong and could save people. I think I use her as my clown persona, my shadow character, in ‘Spinning Immigrant,’ especially as I think she is funny. Wonder Woman was everything I wanted to be.”

Animal house: Creating a pet-friendly home While you may not need a doggie spa, you do need to reconsider that couch. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Real estate, as they say, is all about location, location, location. But life, or course, is never that simple, especially when family is involved. These days, even the four-legged members get a say. In a recent survey, the American Pet Products Association found that 44 percent of households in the U.S. own at least one dog, and the market is responding. In California, Standard Pacific Homes offers a 170-square foot “pet suite” — complete with a bathing station, laundry facilities, a flatscreen TV and dog-run access — as an option in its Orange County development. Manhattan high-rises have been catering to pet owners

ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN PET PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION, AMERICANS WILL SPEND AN ESTIMATED $62.75 BILLION ON THEIR PETS THIS YEAR, UP FROM $60.28 BILLION IN 2015. for years, although amenities like the Mercedes House’s Canine Club — with “cage-free” doggie day care — are changing the game. While an on-site doggie spa may seem a little extreme, taking your pet’s needs into consideration is a smart move. “More and more, my clients bring up their pets,” says interior designer Nan Ruvel, who has created everything from specialized mudrooms for messy pups to custom litter-box “bathrooms” for cats. “And I encourage that. You really want to make sure the space works for the entire family.”

Fabrics are key
Accidents happen, which is why wood floors have long-been the goldstandard for pet owners. “Choose a hard wood, and avoid anything too dark that will show scratches easily,” advises Ruvel. If you can’t quite give up your carpets, Ruvel recommends opting for wool.
Many a couch has met its demise at the claws of a scratch-happy cat. But if you shop smart, you can extend the life of your furniture. “Most people think the durable fabrics are better, but whenever you have a nubby weave,

Everything you need to know about Zach Eflin Despite his struggles Tuesday, Eflin is a promising prospect for the Phillies. KYLE PHILLIPPI @MetroPhilly sports@metro.us
A 5-2 mark with a 2.90 ERA and 5.0 strikeout-towalk ratio up in Lehigh Valley was good enough to get Zach Eflin a call-up to the Phillies. With Vince Velasquez on the shelf for 15 days, Eflin, acquired in the Jimmy Rollins deal, will get at least a few starts to show the big league eyes what he’s capable of. His first coming on Tuesday. Aside from his impressive Triple-A numbers, there’s more to Eflin. He’s now the Phillies baby on the roster At age 22, Eflin will be the youngest player on a team featuring
plenty of fresh faces. The previous leaders in the clubhouse were Tyler Goeddel, Maikel Franco and Aaron Nola all at 23. Goeddel, born in October, held about a two-month advantage on Franco. Eflin was also the third-youngest pitcher in the International League with the IronPigs.
Angeles Dodgers shipped Matt Kemp to San Diego for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and a prospect to be named later. The latter would turn out to be Eflin. At the time, the right-hander had played two minor league seasons, posting a 7-7 record with a 3.02 ERA between rookie ball and Single-A.
His sinkerball fools batters At 6-foot-6, Eflin can get some power from his windup. So when he goes to throw his sinker, he can really get some movement on it as evidence by the opposition hitting just .199 against him. He once induced 13 groundballs, a seasonhigh, in seven scoreless innings on May 19.
His youth was ďŹ lled with tragedy In an ESPN.com story, Eflin opened up about his childhood. In 2012, he told ESPN’s Brandon Parker that, “my mother was an alcoholic, so my dad thought baseball was a good way to do some father-son bonding and give me a break from the environment.â€? That was a result of tragedy that struck his family in 1995 when his grandfather passed away followed by his 7-year-old sister who was lost due to complications from leukemia. That all

Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Florida, Eflin had committed to his hometown college, the University of Central Florida. He was set to go there until he was selected with the 33rd overall selection in the first round of the 2012 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres. BRIEF Phillies’ Zach Ein pounded for nine runs in MLB debut Hello, Zach Ein, and welcome to MLB. The Phillies’ 22-year-old rookie walked to the hill for the first time as a Major League ballplayer and left before he completed three innings Tuesday, as the Phillies fell to the Blue Jays 11-3. Ein gave up three homers, including a grand slam to Josh Donaldson. He walked
three and allowed nine runs on nine hits. It’s an afternoon he hopes he can soon forget. It’s also a road trip Philly wants to forget, after dropping four of ďŹ ve (and three in a row in a sweep by the Nationals). The Blue Jays and Phillies will each travel south to Citizens Bank Park where the two will continue their homeand-home series in Philly Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Jeremy Hellickson will get the call for the Phillies.

Union look to continue unbeaten streak The Philadelphia Union face NYCFC at Yankees Stadium this weekend. JEFF MCMENAMIN @Jeff_McMenamin sports@metro.us
June has been a big month for soccer in the city of Philadelphia. As the United States Men’s National Team won Group A and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa America Centenario Saturday in a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field, the Union (6-3-5) return to regular season action atop the Eastern Conference (23 points) on Saturday against New York City FC (4-5-6). The Union entered June on a high note, topping the Columbus Crew (3-5-5), 3-2, on the first of the month to give themselves a little breathing room in first place entering the break. They know
how important stretching that gap is moving forward. “You can see a group of guys that push, aren’t scared, give every ounce of energy, represent the city of Philadelphia and are playing pretty good soccer right now,” manager Jim Curtin said, following the Union’s win over Columbus. “I’m a big believer in the table tells the truth. At the end of the day we’re where we are because we put a lot into it. It is still tight in the East. It’s going be tight the whole year. So, we’re not satisfied. We’ll continue to push.” The story all season has been the sensational play of the rookies on the team. Against Columbus, it was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 draft, Fabian Herbers, who netted his first career goal on a beautiful strike to the upper 90 of the net to solidify the Union victory. tin talked about Herbers’ talent following the win. “He has a knack for running, losing his center back, being in the right spot at the right time,” Curtin said. “So, he gets slipped in there on his weaker foot to have the composure to know that

the center back’s only play there is to slide, he cuts it back to his strong foot and puts it in a pretty good spot [chuckles], to say the least. So, he has things that I can’t teach. I don’t take credit for any of that, that’s for sure. He is special around the goal.” The Union have also kept their unbeaten streak alive. The team has
gone 3-0-5 in its past eight matches and will face the team who started it all in their next match. Back on April 23, the Union bested New York City FC, 2-0, to push the team into first place in the East. Fifty-six days will have passed when the two square off on Saturday. “We are a team, I think by the true sense
of the word we are a team,” Curtin said. “I’ve said it before, we came out today on the field, everybody is asking now, ‘Who is the leader of this group?’ Or, ‘When the game gets tough, who is your guy that steps up?’ I think I have 11 guys that will lead, and 11 guys that will step up, when the game starts.”
