OBAMA MEETS DALAI LAMA IN SPITE OF CHINA PROTEST

1

U.S. President Barack Obama met the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, at the White House on Wednesday in spite of a warning by China that this would damage diplomatic ties, a White House official said. The meeting was due to take place in the White House Map Room, where diplomatic functions are often held, instead of the Oval Office where the president normally meets world leaders. A White House official confirmed the meeting had taken place, but gave no other details. China’s Foreign Ministry said earlier it had lodged diplomatic representations with the United States over the planned meeting, saying it would damage Chinese-U.S. ties. REUTERS

NRA: SALES TO PEOPLE ON TERRORISM WATCH LISTS SHOULD BE DELAYED

The National Rifle Association said on Wednesday it stood by its position on terrorism watch lists and access to firearms, saying sales to potential buyers who are on the lists should be delayed while they are investigated by the FBI. In a statement, the gun lobbying group said it welcomed a meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. It also said protections needed to be put in place to allow people wrongfully put on a terrorism watch list to be removed. REUTERS

CNN: BOY’S BODY FOUND AFTER GATOR ATTACK AT FLORIDA DISNEY RESORT

3

Police using boats, divers and a helicopter on Wednesday recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy after an alligator dragged him into a lagoon in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, CNN reported citing an unnamed source. The child was snatched as he played at the water’s edge on Tuesday night, despite his parents’ effort to save him, by an alligator believed to be between 4 and 7 feet long. Officials are expected to hold a press conference shortly. Wildlife officials had earlier caught and killed five alligators from the lagoon to examine them for traces of the boy but found no evidence they were involved, said Nick Wiley, head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The resort closed its beaches and recreational marinas on Wednesday as search teams had scoured the Seven Seas Lagoon, a manmade lake reaching 14 feet in depth. REUTERS

Duck boat safety bill announced Law would require cameras in blind spots, ban leading tours while driving. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Less than two months after a deadly crash near Boston Common, lawmakers are proposing new rules for tourist-schlepping vehicles like the city’s fleet of duck boats. The proposal, announced at the State House on Wednesday morning, would require that duck boats be fitted with cameras and sensors to monitor blind spots, and that drivers not be allowed to narrate tours of the city while operating the vehicles. On all land-and-sea vehicles, one person would need to be designated the driver, while a second staff member would lead the sightseeing tour. In the past, duck boat drivers have done both at the same time. “These are the things that we view as basically common-sense measures that we should move forward now without the need for further delay or investigation,” Sen. William Brownsberger, the bill’s co-sponsor, said Wednesday. Brownsberger and Sen. Joe Boncore, as well as Rep. Jay Livingstone, were joined on Beacon Hill by the parents of Allison Warmuth, the 28-year-old who was killed April 30

Tour companies Two main companies operate amphibious tours in Boston: Boston Duck Tours, which owned the vehicle involved in the April 30 crash, and Boston Super Tours-operated Super Duck Tours. Of the two, only Super Duck Tours vehicles have both a tour guide and a driver on board during trips, according to a review in the Globe from May. “We have already installed a new camera on each duck, which will complement the eight existing mirrors to address any blind spots,” Boston Duck Tours said in a statement, the Boston Globe reported. “We also plan to add sensory equipment to the front and back of the vehicle in the near term. We await the conclusion of the City of Boston’s investigation and will collaborate with them on any additional safety procedures that they recommend.”

in a collision with a duck boat while riding on a motorized scooter. She had reportedly been stopped

in front of the duck boat in its blind spot, and was overtaken at a red light when it turned green. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. “At first we were just shocked and we weren’t really thinking about much beyond our own grief,” Ivan Warmuth, Allison’s father, said in a news conference. “As we became more aware we started to get really concerned that this was allowed to go on and nothing was being done to prevent this from happening again.” The crafts, bulky World War II-era amphibious landing vehicles, have given guided tours in Boston for two decades and have reached iconic status in the city. In addition to carrying tourists past landmarks while drivers ham it up with jokes and trivia, the boats are also fixtures of events like post-Super Bowl and World Series victory parades. Bicyclists, meanwhile, have complained that the vehicles’ odd design and spacious blind spots make it dangerous to share the

road with them. The Boston Cyclists Union told Metro in May that it was working with lawmakers to impose new rules on duck boats, and had even called for them to be “taken off the road until they’re made to be safe to coexist with vulnerable road users,” according to Becca Wolfson, the group’s executive director. In an interview on Wednesday, Wolfson called the legislation “a great example of acknowledging there is a threat to safety on our streets and an engineered solution that can be taken to increase safety.” The bill does not impose new restrictions about background checks for drivers — the operator of the vehicle involved in the April 30 crash, it was later revealed, had a lengthy record of driving violations. The legislation would not just cover duck boats. Other companies operating tours, among them those running doubledecker sightseeing buses, would also need to comply with the part outlawing driving while also providing commentary to passengers. Brownsberger urged his colleagues to take action quickly, saying he hoped the legislation could pass as quickly as the so-called “upskirting” law, which was fasttracked following a highprofile case involving a passenger on the Green Line.

Bill raising tobacco purchase age generating talk in House A leading House proponent of raising the state’s tobacco-buying age to 21 said he’s “optimistic” the measure and other tobacco restrictions will become law this year, but cautioned that the bill sits among many other matters still awaiting action in the final weeks of formal legislative sessions. The Senate in April passed a comprehensive bill aimed at preventing youth tobacco use and addiction. Along with a three-year increase in the state’s tobacco purchase age, the bill (S 2269) includes a ban on tobacco sales in pharmacies and restrictions on e-cigarettes. Anti-tobacco advocates, including high school students, visited the State House Wednesday to lobby representatives in support of the bill and thank the 32 senators who voted for it. The Retailers Association of Massachusetts has come out against the bill, calling it “antilocal business and anti-consumer.” A poll released Wednesday, conducted by the MassINC Polling Group for the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, found 65 percent of registered voters support raising the sale age to 21. FDA warns Whole Foods over ‘serious violations’ at Mass. plant Whole Foods has until the end of the month to clean up its act. The Food and Drug Administration found “serious violations” during a February inspection of an Everett, Massachusetts, plant, according to a June 8 letter sent to the company. Regulators are giving the grocer until the end of June to address its potential for contamination at the facility, North Atlantic Kitchen. In its letter, the FDA found various ready-to-eat items, including pesto pasta, mushroom quesadillas, egg salad and couscous were prepared or stored uncovered in areas where “condensate” was leaking from ceiling joints, a doorway and a condenser fan. Other violations include keeping dirty dishes near food, storing containers and utensils

near hand-washing stations with splash guards, failure of employees to wash hands between cleaning and handling food items, employees washing hands in sinks without hot water, and one employee who sprayed an ammonium-based sanitizer on a colander of leafy greens. In a statement to

ABC News, Whole Foods claims it addressed and corrected the issues outlined in the FDA’s letter. “The thorough and tangible steps that were taken in the North Atlantic Kitchen to address each of these points were not reflected in the FDA’s follow-up letter and we have contacted them to

discuss the matter.” Ken Meyer, global vice president of the upscale grocery chain says they were “surprised.” “We’ve been in close contact with the FDA, opened our doors to inspectors regularly since February and worked with them to address every issue brought to our attention,” Meyer said. and strangers. They all had reached the same dead end in a frantic rush to escape the gunfire at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub. The 20-year-old had watched Omar Mateen’s feet as he paced about; she’d listened to his rants to hostage negotiators about U.S. bombings in Afghanistan and his allegiance to militant Islamic groups. Now, she could hear the police shouting outside. “Move away from the walls! Move away from the walls!” And she saw Mateen’s feet backing toward the stall. “He said, ‘Hey you!’ to someone on the floor inside the bathroom and shot them, shot another person and then shot another person,” Carter recalled, imitating the sound of the gun. “Bow! Bow! Bow!” It was near dawn on Sunday, three hours after Mateen had begun his savage assault on the popular gay dancing spot. Within moments, police were breaking through the wall. “They told him, ‘Put your weapon down! Put your weapon down!’ He didn’t, so they engaged in gunfire. They got him. They shot him dead,” Carter said. In the days following the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, survivors’ tales have begun to emerge, recounting the horror of a siege that killed 49 people, as well as the attacker. Their stories reveal a scene of fear, desperation and sometimes methodical carnage, as well as a fraught, prolonged rescue. In the moments after Mateen was shot, water poured from broken pipes in the demolished wall, a bloody tide filling the bathroom floor where bodies and wounded lay. Carter called out to her friends — they’d come down as a trio from Philadelphia, dancing and laughing

through the first night of her first Florida vacation. They chose the club after searching the internet for fun dance spots. One of Carter’s companions, another 20-year-old named Tiara Parker, responded to her calls, saying she’d been shot in the side. The other, Akyra Murray, just 18 and the life of the party, was slumped over Parker’s lap, silent and motionless. A man who’d been trapped in the stall with them took Murray’s pulse and said she was still breathing. Moments later, a SWAT team member pulled Carter out of the room, dragging her to safety by her arms. As she slid across the bloody floor, she saw Murray’s phone and grabbed it. “I truly believed that after I was told she was breathing, that her pulse was still going, that I would be able to get that phone back to her,” Carter said. In the ambulance, rescuers cut away Carter’s bloody clothing. They told her the bullet that shattered her right leg had also passed through her left leg. Later, Carter would learn that Murray didn’t make it. Lying in the hospital, among dozens of wounded, she wrote a poem. “The guilt of being alive is heavy,” it concluded. REUTERS

BRIEF US judge approves Gawker’s bankruptcy loan A U.S. bankruptcy judge approved Gawker Media request to borrow $22 million from an affiliate of buyout firm Cerberus Capital Management LP to help fund the online publisher through its court-supervised auction. The gossip news website owner, facing a crippling court ruling to pay $140 million to former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan over the publication of ex-

cerpts from a sex tape, needs the money to stay in business as it seeks to sell itself in bankruptcy. Gawker filed for bankruptcy last week, with an agreement from publisher Ziff Davis LLC to buy it for $90 million, setting the floor for future bids in an auction expected to take place later this summer. Attorneys for both Gawker and Hogan agreed to a standstill in litigation the publisher faces in Florida until July 13. REUTERS

Fed: Interest rates unchanged, signals two hikes this year The U.S. central bank, however, lowered its economic growth forecasts for 2016 and 2017 and indicated it would be less aggressive in tightening monetary policy after the end of this year. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday and signaled it still plans two rate increases this year, saying it expects the U.S. job market to strengthen after a recent slowdown. Fed policymakers gave no indication =of when they might raise rates, though their projections leave the door open to an increase next month. “The pace of improvement in the labor

market has slowed,” the Fed said in a statement. It added, however, that “economic activity will expand at a moderate pace and labor market indicators will strengthen” even with gradual rate increases. Updated projections from Fed policymakers point to annual economic growth of only 2 percent for the foreseeable future, slightly lower than forecast at the March policy meeting. Policymakers have been worried about potential weakness in the U.S. labor market and the possibility of financial turmoil if Britain votes next week to leave the European Union. The Fed statement on Wednesday made no reference to that vote. “It’s as dovish as the Fed can get without actually cutting rates. Even [Kansas City Fed

The Fed left its target range for overnight lending rates between banks at between 0.25 percent to 0.50 percent, keeping on hold a campaign to lift borrowing costs that started late last year. It raised rates in December for the first time in nearly a decade and signaled four increases were likely in 2016. Concerns about a global economic slowdown and volatility in financial markets subsequently reduced that number to two. Although worries about the health of the global economy have eased, a sharp slowdown in U.S. hiring in May was unsettling. More recent data have indicated that last month’s jobs report may have been a blip. The Fed statement said economic activity appeared to have picked up since April. REUTERS

Trump calls for surveillance of mosques despite criticism of rhetoric Trump previously has drawn criticism, including from within his own party, for saying he would implement a database to keep track of Muslims in the United States and require them to register. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday called for surveillance of mosques as part of U.S. law enforcement efforts to prevent terrorism, and stood by his remarks on banning Muslim immigrants that others in his party have criticized. Trump repeated his call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration to the United States after a U.S.-born Muslim man with Afghan immigrant parents fatally shot 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub early on Sunday. Spokesman: Sanders not ending campaign in video speech Bernie Sanders does not plan to suspend his campaign and endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a video speech to supporters on Thursday, focusing instead on ways to pursue his policy agenda and reform goals, a spokesman said. Sanders, who has resisted pressure to exit the race and back Clinton in a show of party unity since she clinched the Democratic nomination last week, will address supporters nationwide on a video live stream on Thursday night.

That raised expectations Sanders might formally pull the plug on his campaign. But spokesman Michael Briggs said on Wednesday the speech will focus on how Sanders’ supporters can keep the fight alive on priorities such as raising the minimum wage and reducing the influence of big money in politics. “Tomorrow night, no, he’s not ending it, Briggs said of the campaign. “We’re working our way through that, how to go forward on that front. This message to supporters is going to be a lot broader than that.

Three things to know about Demi and Nick’s Future Now tour 1. Jay Z and J.T. Inspired by Jay Z and Justin Timberlake’s 2013 stadium tour, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas will weave their sets together, sharing moments on stage. “It was really awesome how they came in and out of each other’s sets, so we’re going to something similar to that,” says the Lovato. Jonas adds: “[The show] seamlessly goes into Demi’s [set] and then mine, [then] together.” 2. Oversharing Without his brothers by his side, Jonas says he dishes more of himself than ever on his new album “Last Year Was Complicated.” He credits Lovato for “encouraging me to really open up about some things that happened in my life that I think will help people get even more connected to me.”

It’s official! Donald Glover will star in the new Spider-Man The 2010 internet campaign #donald4spiderman has finally paid off. Donald Glover is set to play a part in the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie. Andrew Garfield rolled in great success with his role as the “Amazing SpiderMan,” but when a fan by the name of “Rootadoo” commented on an article calling out the white casting of the franchise, he volunteered Glover as the perfect actor to play the superhero. When the idea hit the Twitterverse six years ago, it turned into a movement. Donald Glover himself got involved. In 2011, the actor launched his rap career and created the stage name Childish Gambino, which, we might add, could also totally be a rad name for SpiderMan’s next archnemesis. On the track “Not Going Back,” he raps:

“Couldn’t see me as Spider-Man, but now I’m spittin’ venom. Now, you payin’ attention, pick your f–––n face up. When I wanna be a superhero I just wake up.” Spicy! It’s safe to say that Glover does NOT take rejection too kindly. Well, 2017 is looking up for you, Mr. Glover: You may not be SpiderMan, but you’ll be getting that blockbuster salary.

the word

Michael Franti’s ninth studio album, titled “Soulrocker,” dropped June 3 and he’s since set off on a U.S. summer tour with his ubiquitous band, Spearhead. The 50-year-old singersongwriter, known for his peace-positive lyrics and humanitarian work, breaks from a rare two hours at home in San Fran for a quick chat before hitting the road. Being the ninth formal release for you, do you still get nervous the week it drops? Any time you put your heart into something, you hope people appreciate it. There’s always nervousness — like, “Did I say what I wanted to say?” Then there’s the excitement. I feel really proud of this record in that I’m speaking to issues we face today, and hopefully, that inspires other people to get through their day, too. When you’re writing about social or political issues, things tend to change so quickly. How do you make sure something you write, then record, then release stays relevant by the time people are

listening to it? Things happen so fast that you have to be mindful not to be too specific and deal more in general terms or it’ll be jaded by the time it comes out. And at the end of the day, you still want to make songs that are a part of a person’s everyday life. It has to have a cool beat and you have to be able to sing along to them. Then again, I look back at songs I’ve written about social issues 20 years ago, and they can still be perfectly suited for what happens today. Unfortunately, things don’t always change. You’ll occasionally play songs live before they land on the album — does this type of audience feedback affect the end product? Totally, and it really effects the way I go about recording it. I write every song with an acoustic guitar, so sometimes when you write a song and there’s a beat around it but until you play it live, you can’t see how the words are coming across or if it needs more energy. You can see that immediately when you play it live.

Kaitlin Olson is known for going blue. For 11 seasons — with a 12th en route, and a 13th and 14th already commissioned — she’s played Sweet Dee, a member of the appallingly selfcentered quartet on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But that’s not Olson. In person, she’s a warm mother of two (and married to “Philadelphia creator/star Rob McElhenney). Knowing that, it’s only mildly shocking that she pops up in “Finding Dory, the latest Pixar romp, voicing a nearsighted whale shark super-duper stoked to be reunited with Ellen DeGeneres’ absentminded regal blue tang. Actors who go edgy sometimes say they actively sought out children’s fare because they wanted their kids or nieces or nephews to actually be able to watch their work. Being a parent of two, was that your idea, too? This is certainly the first thing my kids have been able to see that I’ve done. That was awesome. I would absolutely do more Pixar films, or more kids films, as long as they are funny and good. There’s certainly some kids films I would not be interested in doing. [Laughs] You’ve played a lot of scuzzy, nasty characters. But here you get to play someone who’s really, really nice and sweet. The character didn’t start off nice. These characters

take so many different shapes before they land on something. So I started off as a bit of a nemesis to Dory. I got to do a lot of that in the beginning. But then it slowly changed. They realized Dory needed support, and they wanted this idea of family being what you make it, and if you don’t have a family you can create one yourself. So I needed to be on her side. So she got nicer and nicer. It was fun to play someone nice. I’m used to bitchy roles. It’s a real stretch to be nice. [Laughs] You seem nice in person. I’m kidding, I’m a nice person. I met someone the other day who said, “Wow, I was expecting you to be really mean! Because Sweet Dee’s so mean. I was like, [does a mousy voice] “No, I’m nice!

GETTY IMAGES

Real or make-believe? You play another mean character on the forthcoming show “The Mick. “Philadelphia is an ensemble show. How have you taken to playing the sole lead? In theory, it was intimidating, because if this doesn’t go well it all lands on me. But when we were shooting it I was having so much fun. It’s a role I feel really com-

fortable in. I wasn’t nervous at all. I was very conďŹ dent that it was funny and it was turning out to be exactly what I had envisioned. Look, if it bombs wildly it will all be on me. [Laughs] As long as I’m happy with it, I’m OK if it doesn’t do well. I’m not embarrassed by it in any way. I’m really excited for it. Let’s hope it does well, then I’ll take all the credit.

Basking in BISq The Inman Square wine bar celebrates one year. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Cambridge’s BISq restaurant and wine bar is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Inman Square this month. The modern American small plates restaurant is the sibling to Bergamot, the beloved neighborhood staple helmed by Chef Keith Pooler and Servio Garcia. Pooler’s Bisq kitchen is run by Dan Bazzinotti, who says the restaurant’s first few months were its most formative. “It was my first time running the first show, so the first couple of moths felt like a year in a general,” the Lawrence native says. We chat with Bazzinotti about BISq’s first year, the menu’s evolution and what he eats at home. What made those first

few months so stressful? We weren’t in a groove yet because we had never cooked in this kitchen before and we were using this new equipment. In some ways, old equipment is better because it’s reliable. This oven will have computer issues sometimes. Plus, you have a lot of people to impress, not just reviewers and critics, but chef and restaurant friends. Lydia Shire or the people from Sycamore [in Newton Centre] or even our owner — they’ll come in to eat and that was a big thing, to say to these guys in the industry, “This is what we’re doing, this is what we’re about.” What’s the status now? We’ve got our stride now and have figured out what works and what doesn’t. We’re still getting to know the neighborhood, though. We’re not fine dining in the way that we plate. But

with the technique in the kitchen we are. We’re all French classically trained, but the plating is fun and family-style. What about the menu has stuck over the course of a year? With menu writing it’s good to come full circle [over the course of a year] and see what works and what doesn’t. We just put the green gazpacho back on the menu. We had that one on our opening menu, and we brought it back. It’s just that good. Is this something you’re making for yourself at home? [Laughs] No, not at all. I’m very simple. I try not to cook when I’m at home. It’s pasta, tuna salad and hard-boiled eggs. Or if I’m grilling with my wife and our friends, we’re doing steak tips, lobster, corn and asparagus so I don’t have to clean a kitchen. That’s my motto at home: How much can I grill?

Chef Dan Bazzinotti is an alum of Scampo and Bergamot.

TRAVEL

Along the Irish shore Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

GETTY IMAGES

Take one of the world’s greatest road trips in Northern Ireland. MARIANNE COLAHAN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Summer is the perfect time to travel to Northern Ireland. With temperatures in the 60s, late sunsets (there’s plenty of light as late as 10 p.m.) and seemingly endless miles of lush greenery to enjoy, the country offers a refreshing break from city heat. One of the best ways to explore Northern Ireland is along the country’s 120-mile Causeway Coastal Route, which takes visitors between the cities of Belfast and Londonderry along the northeast coast. Don’t be intimidated that the Irish drive on the left side of the road — a little extra caution when turning is all you need. The route includes nine scenic drives that loop from the causeway, offering additional points of interest. The coastal drive showcases so much of what Northern Ireland has to offer, from craggy cliffs and rolling hills to waterfalls and exquisite beaches. The marked Causeway Coastal Route also has 17 scenic stops in addition to the nine

other scenic drives. Depending on how long you plan to take on your road trip — we recommend between three and five days — you can stop at every site along the way. If you’re taking a more expedited route, we’ve highlighted some of the most iconic points from the Causeway Coastal Route:

Carrickfergus Castle The first stop on the Causeway Coastal Route after Belfast, Carrickfergus is one of the oldest castles in Northern Ireland. Beautifully preserved, this medievalera castle was built in the 12th century and has withstood many military conflicts.

Gobbins Cliff Path One of the first stops after beginning the route in Belfast, the Gobbins Cliff Path was first designed in 1902 and has been renovated extensively to offer a welcoming tourist destination. It includes an exposed walkway over the Irish Sea that offers unmatched views of the basalt coastline.

Cushendun The small coastal village of Cushendun is a charming and scenic stop north of the Glens of Antrim,

with Cornish touches built to please the area baron’s wife. The village is also surrounded by dramatic beaches with rocky outcroppings and a series of caves that visitors can explore.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Located near Ballintoy Harbour, the Carricka-Rede Rope Bridge links the mainland of Northern Ireland to the tiny island of Carrick. Fishermen originally constructed the rope bridge in 1755, hanging nearly 100 feet above the rocky shore, so they could check on their salmon nets.

Giant’s Causeway One of the most celebrated places on the Causeway Coastal Route is Giant’s Causeway. The area is comprised of 40,000 basalt columns that jut out into the ocean. The site’s name has its roots in legends that claim it was built by giants (it was actually the result of an ancient volcanic eruption — either way, it’s a completely unique geographic marvel and a UNESCO World Heritage protected site).

Mussenden Temple High above the

northwestern coast of Northern Ireland, the Mussenden Temple overlooks the Atlantic. Built in 1785, the

temple was originally a summer library and was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. The temple

and its surrounding views are among the most photographed scenes on the island of Ireland.

Meet the camera that tosses treats

Furbo allows owners to watch and feed their pets via a smartphone app. DANIEL CASILLAS Metro World News letters@metro.us

Just because you’re away doesn’t mean your pooch doesn’t deserve a treat. Furbo, created by Seattle startup Tomofun, has an interactive dog camera that comes with two-way audio, to ensure that neither you nor your mutt feels quite so lonely when separated. The canister-shaped gadget also has live-streaming capabilities, and you can dispense snacks via an app. Maggie Cheung, co-creator of Furbo, explained to us how her beloved dog inspired the development of Furbo. What led you to create this device for pets? As a dog parent, the toughest part of my day used to be the moment when I would leave for work. My 8-year-old poodle would cry and give me the saddest puppy eyes that just broke my heart. I needed a soluPROVIDED tion that allowed me to truly interact with him when he’s feeling lonely at home. That’s why our team created Furbo as a simple

way to help dog parents keep close to their furry loved ones. How does Furbo work? It’s designed to help dog parents care for their pups in real-time, all the time. Furbo is the first dog camera to include a treat-popping feature, which allows pups and parents to play from anywhere — relieving parents’ concerns about their dogs being home alone. Why did you design Furbo to toss treats? Designed with the input from over 5,000 dog parents, Furbo is made specifically to suit the needs of dogs. Instead of simply dropping treats to the floor, Furbo is thoughtfully designed to toss treats into the air, mimicking the way dog parents play fetch with their dogs. Do dogs actually enjoy Furbo? Yes, dogs absolutely love Furbo! When a treat is about to come out, Furbo plays a light audible clicking sound that is akin to a professional trainer’s clicking device. Dogs learn to develop a positive association with the clicking sound. As soon as they hear this sound, they come running toward Furbo and happily wait for their delicious treat to pop out. Could a cat owner use Furbo? Yes! Cat owners can definitely use Furbo. In fact, our office kitty loves it. She’d always try

to catch the flying treats with her tiny paws. As long as the size of the cat treats fit into Furbo’s treat dispenser, cat owners can play and interact with their cats while apart. How can Furbo help pets and owners? Having consulted with many professional dog trainers and researchers, we engineered Furbo to help with separation anxiety. Parents can calm their pups by talking and interacting with them via the camera. Furbo can also help improve a dog’s behavior: If the dog is well-behaved at home, reward him with a treat to reinforce good habits as they happen. In addition to launching treats, what others features does Furbo oer? Being away from home doesn’t mean you can’t respond to emergencies. Furbo’s microphone senses when your dog is barking and immediately sends an alert to your phone. You can quickly open the Furbo app and see what might be upsetting your pup. Furbo also has built-in HD night vision, so you can check in on your dog even if you’re having a late night at work.

FANTASY: MAKE USE OF SPLIT STATS As we approach the halfway point of the season, it can be a challenge for struggling owners to find help on the waiver wire. One method that can help you uncover hidden gems is to make use of split stats. All caveats about sample size aside, at the end of the day all we’re trying to do is to accumulate numbers. It can be a big boon to your team to keep a few spots at the end of your roster earmarked for players currently on a hot streak. Here are a few who currently fit the bill and are available in at least 75 percent of Yahoo leagues.

KYLE BISHOP OPINION Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller. com. His articles and Fantasy Baseball Rankings are your secret weapon for winning fantasy leagues.

Logan Morrison, 1B, Tampa Bay Rays Morrison’s Rays career got off to a horrendous start, as he posted a .290 OPS in April. That’s not a typo, folks. He collected just six hits in 60 at-bats, striking out 25 times. Tampa stuck with him, though, and they’ve been rewarded for their patience. Over the past month, Morrison is hitting .347/.431/.611 with seven homers, 20 runs, and 18 RBI. He’s even chipped in three stolen bases. That production has made him one of the best first basemen in baseball — real or fantasy — during that

yes, the beard is still glorious. The hirsute veteran just turned 37, but you wouldn’t know it by how well he’s played of late. He’s hit .349/.451/.698 with four homers, 10 runs, and 15 RBI in his last 12 games. Firmly slotted into the No. 2 spot in the Nationals’ lineup ahead of a guy you might have heard of (Bryce Harper), Werth should continue to rack up the counting stats. Given the quality of his contact, it’s reasonable to expect his batting average to keep rising as well. He’s pulled it from just below the Mendoza line up to a much more palatable .246.

Chase Anderson, SP, Milwaukee Brewers time. Fantasy owners have been reluctant to embrace LoMo, as he’s only recently crept above 20 percent ownership.

Jayson Werth, OF, Washington Nationals Yes, Werth is still playing … and

Even after a lackluster effort in his last start, Anderson is 3-1 with a 2.75 ERA and 0.75 ERA over the past month. He’s struck out 30 batters and walked just five in those 36 innings. He’s too prone to the long ball to be a consistent fantasy asset, but Anderson will almost certainly spend most of the season on the waiver wire in your league. Keep him in mind as a streaming option going forward.

Grab Tampa Bay’s Logan Morrison while he’s still hot. GETTY IMAGES
