OBAMA MEETS DALAI LAMA IN SPITE OF CHINA PROTEST
1
U.S. President Barack Obama met the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, at the White House on Wednesday in spite of a warning by China that this would damage diplomatic ties, a White House official said. The meeting was due to take place in the White House Map Room, where diplomatic functions are often held, instead of the Oval Office where the president normally meets world leaders. A White House official confirmed the meeting had taken place, but gave no other details. China’s Foreign Ministry said earlier it had lodged diplomatic representations with the United States over the planned meeting, saying it would damage Chinese-U.S. ties. REUTERS

NRA: SALES TO PEOPLE ON TERRORISM WATCH LISTS SHOULD BE DELAYED

The National Rifle Association said on Wednesday it stood by its position on terrorism watch lists and access to firearms, saying sales to potential buyers who are on the lists should be delayed while they are investigated by the FBI. In a statement, the gun lobbying group said it welcomed a meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. It also said protections needed to be put in place to allow people wrongfully put on a terrorism watch list to be removed. REUTERS
CNN: BOY’S BODY FOUND AFTER GATOR ATTACK AT FLORIDA DISNEY RESORT

Police using boats, divers and a helicopter on Wednesday recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy after an alligator dragged him into a lagoon in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, CNN reported citing an unnamed source. The child was snatched as he played at the water’s edge on Tuesday night, despite his parents’ effort to save him, by an alligator believed to be between 4 and 7 feet long. Officials are expected to hold a press conference shortly. Wildlife officials had earlier caught and killed five alligators from the lagoon to examine them for traces of the boy but found no evidence they were involved, said Nick Wiley, head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The resort closed its beaches and recreational marinas on Wednesday as search teams had scoured the Seven Seas Lagoon, a manmade lake reaching 14 feet in depth. REUTERS
Odds are daunting, but backers are hoping real estate mogul will be first Republican since Reagan to capture Empire State. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Does Donald Trump — the Republican presidential candidate, not the real estate tycoon and reality TV star — have what it takes to paint his hometown red in November? New York hasn’t gone for a Republican in a presidential election since Ronald Reagan more than three decades ago. While the numbers are daunting — registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by about 2-1 — Trump’s supporters are optimistic he can make history this year. In April, Trump won 60.4 percent of the votes in the state’s Republican primary. In New York City, he won more than half of the votes in four out of five counties — losing to John Kasich in
Manhattan. Despite recent controversies — including his comments about the Mexican heritage of the judge in the Trump University fraud cases — The New York Times recently reported that Trump believes he can capture the 29 electoral votes of the state where he grew up and took over the family business. An average of recent polls shows Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton with a double-digit lead over Trump in New York, 54.8 percent to 34 percent. David Birdsell, dean of Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs, isn’t as optimistic as Trump that he can make up that much ground in the next five months. Although Trump may gain support in areas of upstate New York, Birdsell said he doesn’t see him carrying the five boroughs or parts of Long Island “This town knows Donald Trump better than
any other locality in the United States,” Birdsell said of New York City. “We’ve had to live cheek by jowl with [him].” Birdsell said some New York voters will be impressed by Trump’s lifestyle and by his accomplishments, but the majority — especially in New York City, where the population is diverse ethnically and economi-
called Trump’s performance in the party’s primaries “a very impressive showing.” “People are reacting negatively to … the economy, defense policies, Obamacare, social programs, etc., that we think we’ve moved too far left,” Turner said. “Trump, symbolically, is the guy who is going to fix that. “I say symbolically because there is not enough meat on the bone yet, we need policies and programs that are designed to put us back on track.” According to Turner, what Trump needs to do to win his home state is put forth his set of policies and programs on various issues which will then get people to “switch sides.” “With a good upstate turnout and a credible performance in New York City, he can carry New York state, so there is some expectation that New York will be in play for the first time in years,” Turner said.

cally — will likely go for Clinton. Former U.S. Rep. Robert Turner, Queens GOP chairman, disagrees, saying if any Republican has a chance in New York, it’s Trump. Developers propose taking Penn Station redevelopment for a ride Rendering of “The Halo” shows 1,200-foot-tall tower featuring 11 rides that would vary in intensity. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
As Penn Station gets ready to undergo a much-needed face-lift, one development company is pitching the idea to top it with an almost 1,200-foot-tall tower ride — expected to be the biggest and fastest in the world. The tower, called “The Halo,” was proposed by Brooklyn Capital Partners to be part of the redevelopment of Penn Station, according to the New York Daily News. It would sit on top of Madison Square Garden or the back of Farley Post Office. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced earlier this year that as part of statewide infrastructure improvements, proposals would be accepted for a public-private partnership to transform the transit hub. Some proposals the state was looking for include closing 33rd Street and using skylights and a new entrance to bring

natural light to the concourse below; removing the Theater at Madison Square Garden to create an 8th Avenue “grand entrance” with commerce, retail and commercial space; and making no large exterior renovations, but focusing on the interior of the station. The Halo, designed by AE Superlab, would be made of about 17,000 tons of steel and will feature 11 parallel tower rides, which would each be tuned to a different degree of intensity — depending on what the rider wants. The rides could possibly reach speeds of 100 miles per hour and get to the base of the station in just six seconds, the Daily News reported. According to AE Superlab, if constructed, the tower ride would be the biggest and fastest in the world, offering riders views that are close to three times the height of The London Eye Ferris wheel. The structure is also expected to serve as an interactive info display showcasing an array of city-relevant information including environmental data and sports results from games inside Madison Square Garden. “The Halo is a project that is uniquely suited to
and tailored for its location in midtown Manhattan,” AE Superlab said in a statement. “The importance of it’s role as the revenue engine for the renovation and upkeep of the beleaguered Penn Station is matched by the impact it will have on the city’s skyline as a smart and optimistic 21st century beacon of aspirational architecture. An entirely thrilling way to experience and interact with New York City.” The transparent struc-
ture would cost an estimated $637 million to build and, according to a plan submitted to state officials, could attract close to 7.8 million “thrill seekers,” reported the Daily News. Other proposals are expected to be submitted by Vornado Realty Trust and Relate Companies. According to AE Superlab, developers are currently waiting for a response from the state and its partners, Amtrak and the MTA, along with Madison Square Garden.

and white soccer jersey and blue jeans. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). NYPD traffic agent charged with groping woman Police have arrested an NYPD traffic agent for allegedly groping the same woman two times in Brooklyn. On Tuesday, police announced the arrest of David Cronin, 58, who was charged with two counts of forcible touching. Cronin, arrested after somebody recognized
him in a wanted poster, was a stranger to the victim, who filed police reports on Dec. 28 and June 7, alleging that he had grabbed her breasts, the New York Daily News reported. Police did not say where the alleged incidents took place, the Daily News added. JASON NUCKOLLS

On Monday night around 11:15 p.m., Justin Rice, 40, was arguing with his girlfriend at the Myrtle Avenue bar when the bouncer kicked him out, the New York Daily News reported. “I will come back Orlando style. I’ll shoot this place up. I’ll get me 50,” Rice allegedly shouted, according to NY1. He also yelled anti-gay slurs. Rice allegedly hit the bouncer and threw a metal bucket filled with sand, the Daily News added. The bouncer restrained him until police arrived. DA: Man indicted for decade-old murder of high school student A Crown Heights resident discovered 16-year-old Chanel Petro-Nixon’s body inside a trash bag, days after the teen disappeared. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
The family of 16-yearold Chanel Petro-Nixon — whose murder has remained unsolved since her body was discovered inside a garbage bag days after she went missing in 2006 — is one step closer to getting justice. Together with the NYPD, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced Wednesday that 29-year-old Veron Primus, formerly of Brooklyn, is being indicted for the murder of the honor student. “Ten years ago, a promising young woman’s life was tragically taken, leaving her family and the community searching for answers,” Thompson said. “My office remained steadfast in our search for justice and with this indictment, we

order of protection of an ex-girlfriend — will be indicted on one count of second-degree murder. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison. According to Thompson, Petro-Nixon was last seen alive on Father’s Day — June 18, 2006 — after leaving her parents’ home in Bedford-Stuyvesant to go visit a friend. The teen was reported missing on June 19 after not returning home, prosecutors said. On June 22, a local Crown Heights
Employee charged with murder in death of New York chiropractor A 60-year-old chiropractor in upstate New York, whose death last year was originally attributed to natural causes, was poisoned by her 23-yearold employee who has been charged with murder, police alleged on Tuesday. Kaitlyn Conley of the small town of Paris, New York, is accused of using the anti-inflammatory drug colchicine to poison Mary Yoder, 60, Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol said. Conley worked at Chiropractic Family Care, which Yoder and her husband owned and operated.

Yoder died in July 2015 from what appeared to be natural causes, Maciol said. But months later, a family member who suspected a crime requested an
investigation, he said. Conley was charged on Monday with seconddegree murder, one count of forgery, two counts of falsifying business records and two counts of petit larceny, the sheriff’s department said. An attorney for Conley could not immediately be identified. After an autopsy of Yoder’s body, the local medical examiner ruled the women’s death a homicide by colchicine poisoning in December. Maciol declined to say what led investigators to determine Conley had poisoned Yoder or what

resident discovered Petro-Nixon’s body inside a trash bag after Department of Sanitation workers refused to take the bag because they said it was oversized. The teen appeared to have been strangled. Investigators discovered that Petro-Nixon had allegedly said she would later be meeting up with Primus. According to PIX 11, Primus has been held in a prison in St. Vincent since April 21 after he
was accused of fatally stabbing a woman last year, just months after returning to his home country. Authorities will now seek extradition for Primus to return him to Brooklyn so he can be arraigned. “This indictment is a testament to the fact that neither time nor distance will stop our investigators and prosecutors from the pursuit of justice,” said NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.
MISTAKEN IDENTITY Police: Bronx drug dealer gunning for rival kills wrong man A convicted drug dealer was charged on Tuesday in connection to a Bronx shooting that left one man dead in a case of mistaken identity. On May 4, Jose Ingles, 37, was shot to death as he sat in his minivan parked on Faile Street and Spofford Avenue in Hunts Point, the New York Daily News reported. Fredrick Jones, 26, allegedly shot Ingles thinking that he was affiliated with a local man with whom Jones was involved in a dispute. “He mistook [Ingles’ vehicle] for the wrong minivan and shot him,” a source said to the Daily News. Surveillance footage from the scene showed two men approach Ingles’ van before the shooting, according to NBC4, which added that the second suspect remained at large after both men ran from

the scene. “I would have always loved to have said, as sincerely as I could, that ‘I love you’ if I knew it was going to be the last time I was going to talk to him,” Ingles’ brother Abraham Martinez said to NBC4. Jones, who served time on a drug dealing conviction in 2008, was out on $15,000 bond when the shooting occurred, the Daily News added. He was charged on Tuesday with murder and criminal firearm possession, according to NBC4. JASON NUCKOLLS

Donald Trump calls for surveillance of mosques despite criticism of rhetoric Trump previously has drawn criticism, including from within his own party, for saying he would implement a database to keep track of Muslims in the United States and require them to register. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday called for surveillance of mosques as part of U.S. law enforcement efforts to prevent terrorism, and stood by his remarks on banning Muslim immigrants that others in his party have criticized. Trump repeated his call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration to the United States after

a U.S.-born Muslim man with Afghan immigrant parents fatally shot 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub early on Sunday. The billionaire New York real estate developer said that while the Florida gunman was born in the United States, “his parents weren’t and his ideas weren’t born here.” The Orlando gunman, Omar Mateen, is believed by authorities
to have acted alone, inspired by radical ideology he was exposed to over the internet. Spokesman: Sanders not ending campaign in video speech Bernie Sanders does not plan to suspend his campaign and endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a video speech to supporters on Thursday, focusing instead on ways to pursue his policy agenda and reform goals, a spokesman said. Fed: Interest rates unchanged, signals two hikes this year The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday and signaled it still plans two rate increases this year, saying it expects the U.S. job market to strengthen after a recent slowdown. The U.S. central bank, however, lowered its economic growth forecasts for 2016 and 2017 and indicated it would be less aggressive in tightening monetary policy after the end of this year. Fed policymakers gave no indication =of when they might raise rates, though their projections leave the door open to an increase next month. “The pace of improvement in the labor market has slowed,” the Fed said in a statement. It added,

however, that “economic activity will expand at a moderate pace and labor market indicators will strengthen” even with gradual rate increases. Updated projections from Fed policymakers point to annual economic growth of only 2 percent for the foreseeable future, slightly lower than forecast at the March policy meeting. Policymakers have been worried about potential weakness in the U.S. labor market and the possibility of financial
turmoil if Britain votes next week to leave the European Union. The Fed statement on Wednesday made no reference to that vote. “It’s as dovish as the Fed can get without actually cutting rates. Even [Kansas City Fed President] Esther George withdrew her dissent. The path of rates is lower, which is a big dovish swing,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Fund Management. Financial markets all but priced out a rate increase this year after the Fed statement, and U.S. short-term interest rate futures contracts rose. U.S. stocks held on to their pre-meeting gains. Craft brewers raise glass to US farmers, growing record hops crop U.S. farmers plan to harvest their largest-ever hops crop, giving craft brewers who are struggling to match surging demand for beers with more aroma and bitterness reason to cheer. Farmers expect to harvest 51,115 acres of hops in 2016, up 17 percent, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said. “That is certainly good news for us,” said Benjamin Li Yu, chief executive of British Columbia-based Russell Breweries Inc. “I hope the increase is giving everyone room to breathe.” In 2015, sales volume of U.S. craft beer rose 12.8 percent domestically and 16.3 percent for exports, while overall U.S. beer sales eased 0.2 percent,
according to Brewers Association in Boulder, Colorado. Small brewers have feared a hops shortage after adverse weather blighted last summer’s European harvest. Lager producers such as Anheuser-Busch InBev also use hops, but in smaller amounts. Craft beer premiums cover rising hops prices, but Li Yu said finding enough supplies has been the biggest challenge. MillerCoors, owned by SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Co, has absorbed higher hops costs for some beers, like Blue Moon, said Warren Quilliam, senior director of brewing, malting and materials. But those costs are offset by low

aluminum and fuel prices, and long-term contracts smooth out highs and lows, he said. It is likely that small breweries, who buy hops on the spot market, are paying the highest prices, said Viv Jones, brewmaster at Saskatchewan-based Great Western Brewing Company. The company has hops supplies secured for the next three harvests at price increases in line with inflation. U.S. average prices have climbed four straight years, hitting a record $4.38 per pound last year, up 19 percent, according to USDA. The U.S. vine-growing crop, which produces small green cones, is mainly grown in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. REUTERS

Pacing feet, ranting, executions — inside the Orlando killer’s rampage Law enforcement officials continue the investigation at the Pulse nightclub on Wednesday in Orlando. GETTY IMAGES
Patience Carter had been on the floor of the bathroom stall for hours, her right femur shattered by a bullet, pinned beneath friends
and strangers. They all had reached the same dead end in a frantic rush to escape the gunfire at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub. The 20-year-old had watched Omar Mateen’s feet as he paced about; she’d listened to his rants to hostage negotiators about U.S. bombings in Afghanistan and his allegiance to militant Islamic groups. Now, she could hear the police shouting outside. “Move away from the walls! Move away from the walls!” And she saw Mateen’s feet backing toward the stall. “He said, ‘Hey you!’ to someone on the floor inside the bathroom and shot them, shot another person and then shot another person,” Carter recalled, imitating the sound of the gun. “Bow! Bow! Bow!” It was near dawn on Sunday, three hours after Mateen had begun his savage assault on the popular gay dancing spot. Within moments, police were breaking through the wall. “They told him, ‘Put your weapon down! Put your weapon down!’ He didn’t, so they engaged in gunfire. They got him. They shot him dead,” Carter said. In the days following the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, survivors’ tales have begun to emerge, recounting the horror of a siege that killed 49 people, as well as the attacker. Their stories reveal a scene of fear, desperation and sometimes methodical carnage, as well as a fraught, prolonged rescue. In the moments after Mateen was shot, water poured from broken pipes in the demolished wall, a bloody tide filling the bathroom floor where bodies and wounded lay. Carter called out to her friends — they’d come down as a trio from Philadelphia, dancing and laughing

through the first night of her first Florida vacation. They chose the club after searching the internet for fun dance spots. One of Carter’s companions, another 20-year-old named Tiara Parker, responded to her calls, saying she’d been shot in the side. The other, Akyra Murray, just 18 and the life of the party, was slumped over Parker’s lap, silent and motionless. A man who’d been trapped in the stall with them took Murray’s pulse and said she was still breathing. Moments later, a SWAT team member pulled Carter out of the room, dragging her to safety by her arms. As she slid across the bloody floor, she saw Murray’s phone and grabbed it. “I truly believed that after I was told she was breathing, that her pulse was still going, that I would be able to get that phone back to her,” Carter said. In the ambulance, rescuers cut away Carter’s bloody clothing. They told her the bullet that shattered her right leg had also passed through her left leg. Later, Carter would learn that Murray didn’t make it. Lying in the hospital, among dozens of wounded, she wrote a poem. “The guilt of being alive is heavy,” it concluded. REUTERS

An unmanned cargo ship pulled away from the International Space Station on Tuesday to stage the first of three planned NASA experiments on how big fires grow in space, an important test for astronaut safety. Previous experiments in space were limited to the incineration of samples no bigger than an index card, said David Urban, lead researcher for the Spacecraft Fire Experiment, or Saffire. “We tried for years to find a vehicle and a circumstance where this would work and initially we’d get a ‘not on my spacecraft’ reaction,” Urban said during a NASA TV interview. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ultimately settled on using an Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo ship, which is designed to burn up in the atmosphere after it departs the space station.
Cygnus spacecraft WIKIPEDIA
The Cygnus, which departed the space station on Tuesday, was launched from Earth in March with more than 7,000 pounds of food, supplies and science experiments for the station, a research laboratory that flies about 250 miles above the planet. The cargo included Saffire, a module containing a 38-inch by 19-inch cotton-and-fiberglass material sample that will be set on fire after Cygnus reaches a safe distance from the station. The experiment will begin with hot wires igniting the sample. Air flowing through ducts
will fan the fire, which is expected to last about 20 minutes. “One of the big questions is how big will the flame get?” Urban said. Fire behaves differently outside of Earth’s atmosphere, so scientists want to test whether microgravity will limit flames and what materials will burn. The question is not academic. In February 1997, an oxygen-generating canister aboard the Russian Mir space station erupted into a searing flame, blocking the crew’s path to an emergency escape ship. The crew fought the fire with foam extinguishers and water and it eventually burned itself out, leaving a thick residue of soot. The Saffire experiment will be the largest fire set in space since the accidental blaze on Mir. REUTERS

Kaitlin Olson wants you to know she’s nice GETTY IMAGES
Kaitlin Olson voices Destiny, a near-sighted whale shark who tries to help Ellen DeGeneres’ blue tang in “Finding Dory.” PIXAR
a nearsighted whale shark super-duper stoked to be reunited with Ellen DeGeneres’ absentminded regal blue tang. Kaitlin Olson is known for going blue. For 11 seasons — with a 12th en route, and a 13th and 14th already commissioned — she’s played Sweet Dee, a member of the appallingly self-centered quartet on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” But that’s not Olson. In person, she’s a warm mother of two (and married to “Philadelphia” creator/star Rob McElhenney). Knowing that, it’s only mildly shocking that she pops up in “Finding Dory,” the latest Pixar romp, voicing
Actors who go edgy sometimes say they actively sought out children’s fare because they wanted their kids or nieces or nephews to actually be able to watch their work. Being a parent of two, was that your idea, too? This is certainly the first thing my kids have been able to see that I’ve done. That was awesome. I would absolutely do more Pixar films, or more kids’ films, as long as they are funny and good. There’s
Real or make-believe? You play another mean character on the forthcoming show “The Mick.” “Philadelphia” is an ensemble show. How have you taken to playing the sole lead? In theory, it was intimidating, because if this doesn’t go well it all lands on me. But when we were shooting it I was having so much fun. It’s a role I feel really comfortable in. I wasn’t nervous
at all. I was very confident that it was funny and it was turning out to be exactly what I had envisioned. Look, if it bombs wildly, it will all be on me. [Laughs] As long as I’m happy with it, I’m OK if it doesn’t do well. I’m not embarrassed by it in any way. I’m really excited for it. Let’s hope it does well, then I’ll take all the credit.
certainly some kids films I would not be interested in doing. [Laughs] You’ve played a lot of scuzzy, nasty characters. But here you get to play someone who’s really, really nice and sweet. The character didn’t start off nice. These characters take so many different shapes before they land on something. So I started off as a bit of a nemesis to Dory. I got to do a lot of that in the beginning. But then it slowly changed. They realized Dory needed support, and they wanted this idea of family being what you make it, and if you don’t have a family you can create one yourself. So I needed to be on her side. So she got nicer and nicer. It was fun to play someone nice. I’m used to bitchy roles. It’s a real stretch to be nice. [Laughs] You seem nice in person. I’m kidding, I’m a nice person. I met someone the other day who said, “Wow, I was expecting you to be really mean!” Because Sweet Dee’s so mean. I was like, [does a mousy voice] “No, I’m nice!” MATT PRIGGE

‘Dopamine’ If you go With Mumford & Sons June 17 at 6:30 p.m. Forest Hills Stadium 1 Tennis Place, Queens $70, ticketfly.com
inspiration behind “Dopamine”? It came from an EP I recorded called “Candy,” [from] when I first moved to Los Angeles. It was kind of about me just
figuring it out — being lost in the city, but also lost in my own lovesick emotions. “Dopamine” came from being on tour and having to record an album in between tours. It was me getting ideas, thoughts and fantasies, love, poems — those sorts of things — out there. Dopamine is the chemical hormone responsible for feelings like love, which seems to be the encompassing theme of the album. What interests you about it? What fascinates me about dopamine is that it’s tied into your addictions to things, your longing for them. Whenever you think about a really good experience you had, that’s when it’s released. Or when you’re thinking about something that’s going to give you pleasure, whether it’s chocolate, music, women or whatever. It’s about
these enticing things. Why did it become the title of your album? It came from writing a song called “Dopamine.” I just wrote this hook for a song. I kind of forgot about it for a while, then I pulled up that demo again. I was in the studio and showed [producer] Tommy English, and he was like, “Oh, that’s a cool hook. We should do something with that.” It became the title track. It fully encapsulated all of the other songs.

The Musical”) from mashing them up into “Katdashians: Break the Musical,” a “completely unauthorized parody” that began at Theatre 80 and is making the jump to Times Square’s Elektra Theatre (300 W. 43rd St.) beginning tonight. The show has about as much plot as the lives of the Kardashian clan — which is to say, the joy of “Katdashians” is all in letting the absurdity wash over you. The use of social media is encouraged during the performance, and there’s even a special seating area called the

Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. To find out more and schedule your free screening appointment, simply call 800-879-7343

On Orlando and why we need to keep speaking out I’ve been staring at a blank page for an hour now. E3 is going on. There are a zillion video game announcements, something I usually eat with a ladle, not a spoon. The Tony Awards were last night and I could write about the “Hamilton” juggernaut and how I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t listened to the soundtrack yet. I got to hang out with a bunch of awesome geeky ladies this weekend, and I could talk about how important community is. I could write about the “Moana” trailer or the weekend box office, whether or not video game movies can work for anyone but diehard fans. And yet, here I sit, dumbfounded about the mass shooting in Orlando. Everything I’ve been trying to write sounds trite. How we should be kind to each other. How tolerance matters. All of it sounds like shouting into the abyss. Any argument I make for gun control will be met with arguments. Today, people tried to tell me that assault rifles “aren’t weapons unless they're used as weapons,” even after I revealed that I myself was held up at gunpoint many years ago. Believe me, after that, speaking out against gun violence and talking about the importance of gun control seem futile. And yet, I will talk about it, here, on social

media — everywhere. I will continue to speak because it mattered when we stood up for marriage equality. It passed. It mattered when we talked about representation of girls and women in the media. We’re starting to hear producers and directors talk about it being important to show heroes (and villains) of every type. It mattered when Caitlyn Jenner spoke up. People I knew who were uncomfortable with it at first now don’t blink when we talk about it, and defend the rights of trans people to use the same bathroom as they do. It mattered when we talked about Gamergate and online harassment. Laws are starting to change. We’ll never completely erase evil from the world. We’ll never stop violence and war. We will never stop hate. But we can keep on trying to breed more tolerance and peace. One person destroyed a lot of lives this weekend. What if we change one person’s mind by speaking out? What if we change two? How many lives will be saved if we do?

Hot chicken and a hoot with Carla Hall
Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen brings a taste of Nashville to Brooklyn. EVA KIS @thisiskis

Opening a restaurant in New York City almost always comes with delays. In the case of Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen, the “Top Chef” favorite’s first full-service spot that was set to open before Thanksgiving, the months in between have been a boon. “Hot chicken has sort of caught up with us,” says Hall, who’s been working to bring the Nashville dish to the Columbia Street Waterfront
District for two-and-a-half years. “Which is great, because Kentucky Fried Chicken has millions of dollars in marketing to tell people what it is!” For the uninitiated, hot chicken involves tossing the bird in spicy oil, then frying it. Hall offers six levels of heat from various peppers, beginning at Hoot & Honey and topping out at Boomshakalaka, guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye — but not numb your tastebuds. “Using too much heat masks the spices,” she points out. Everything else on the menu serves the chicken, which can be had by the piece or plate. The sides are all vegetarian with hot (mac ‘n’ cheese) and
cold (potato salad) options, as well as seasonal specials. At the soda-fountainstyle bar, get a Brooklyn Brewery Thelma’s Brew, created specially for the restaurant, as well as Nashville craft beers. Even the cocktails are regional, made with Bittermilk mixes from Charleston. The dessert menu will be changing frequently, with layer cakes of the day, soft serve and, of course, pies, while others will come and go as daily specials. The 30-seat restaurant also makes room for a small market of Hall’s favorite Nashville products. KFC aside, hot chicken is not a trend for Hall —
it’s personal. “As a black Southerner, the one thing I didn’t want is to have an accent and to be pigeonholed with this food,” she says. “For so many years, I ran away from this food.” Hall came to open the restaurant somewhat reluctantly. The restaurant world had been trending toward fine dining, which clashed with her approach to food and specifically the simplicity of soul food, which stands out through quality ingredients, not fuss. But when she walked into the space at 115 Columbia St. that would become Southern Kitchen in 2013, the similarity to
Carla Hall
the South’s traditional meat-and-three restaurants struck her. As she learned about how the neighborhood pulled together to help each other and local businesses recover after Hurricane Sandy, she decided this
was the community she wanted to be a part of. AvroKO sent a designer to Nashville to get the aesthetic just right, landing on what feels like a Southern hipster’s dining room, with Hall’s own family photos on the walls along with catchphrases (“Bless your heart”) and, as promised, the backers who helped fund the restaurant though Kickstarter. Mario Batali’s good luck offering of a single signed orange Croc is also mounted on the wall, “I didn’t want it to be cheesy Nashville,” Hall says. “I wanted something that looked like my grandmother’s house.”

30 TRAVEL
Along the Irish shore Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
GETTY IMAGES
Take one of the world’s greatest road trips in Northern Ireland.
MARIANNE COLAHAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Summer is the perfect time to travel to Northern Ireland. With temperatures in the 60s, late
sunsets (there’s plenty of light as late as 10 p.m.) and seemingly endless miles of lush greenery to enjoy, the country offers a refreshing break from city heat. One of the best ways to explore Northern Ireland is along the country’s 120-mile Causeway Coastal Route, which takes visitors between the cities of Belfast and Londonderry along the northeast coast. Don’t be intimidated that the Irish drive on the left side of the road — a little extra caution when turning is all you need. The route includes nine scenic drives that loop from the causeway, offering additional points of interest. The coastal drive showcases so much of what Northern Ireland has to offer, from craggy cliffs and rolling hills to waterfalls and exquisite beaches. The marked Causeway Coastal Route also has 17 scenic stops in addition to the nine other scenic drives. Depending on how long you plan to take on your road trip — we recommend between three and five days — you can stop at every site along the way. If you’re taking a more expedited route, we’ve highlighted some of the most iconic points from the Causeway Coastal Route:
Carrickfergus Castle The first stop on the Causeway Coastal Route after Belfast, Carrickfergus is one of the oldest castles in Northern Ireland. Beautifully preserved, this medievalera castle was built in the 12th century and has withstood many military conflicts.
Gobbins Cliff Path One of the first stops after beginning the route in Belfast, the Gobbins Cliff Path was designed in 1902 and has been renovated extensively to offer a welcoming tourist destination. It includes an exposed walkway over the Irish Sea that offers unmatched views of the basalt coastline.
Cushendun The small coastal village of Cushendun is a charming and scenic stop north of the Glens of Antrim, with Cornish touches built to please the area baron’s wife. The village is also surrounded by dramatic beaches with rocky outcroppings and a series of caves that visitors can explore.
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Located near Ballintoy Harbour, the Carrick-
a-Rede Rope Bridge links the mainland of Northern Ireland to the tiny island of Carrick. Fishermen originally constructed the rope bridge in 1755, hanging nearly 100 feet above the rocky shore, so they could check on their salmon nets.
Giant’s Causeway One of the most celebrated places on the Causeway Coastal Route is Giant’s Causeway. The area comprises 40,000 basalt columns that jut out into the ocean. The site’s name has its roots in legends that claim it was built by giants (it was actually the result of an ancient volcanic eruption — either way, it’s a completely unique geographic marvel and a UNESCO World Heritage protected site).
Mussenden Temple High above the northwestern coast of Northern Ireland, the Mussenden Temple overlooks the Atlantic. Built in 1785, the temple was originally a summer library and was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. The temple and its surrounding views are among the most photographed scenes on the island of Ireland.
