OBAMA MEETS DALAI LAMA IN SPITE OF CHINA PROTEST
1
President Barack Obama met the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, at the White House on Wednesday in spite of a warning by China that this would damage diplomatic ties, a White House official said. The meeting was due to take place in the White House Map Room, where diplomatic functions are often held, instead of the Oval Office where the president normally meets world leaders. A White House official confirmed the meeting had taken place, but gave no other details. China’s Foreign Ministry said earlier it had lodged diplomatic representations with the United States over the planned meeting, saying it would damage Chinese-U.S. ties. REUTERS
NRA: SALES TO PEOPLE ON TERRORISM WATCH LISTS SHOULD BE DELAYED

The National Rifle Association said on Wednesday it stood by its position on terrorism watch lists and access to firearms, saying sales to potential buyers who are on the lists should be delayed while they are investigated by the FBI. In a statement, the gun lobbying group said it welcomed a meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. It also said protections needed to be put in place to allow people wrongfully put on a terrorism watch list to be removed. REUTERS
CNN: BOY’S BODY FOUND AFTER GATOR ATTACK AT FLORIDA DISNEY RESORT
3
Police using boats, divers and a helicopter on Wednesday recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy after an alligator dragged him into a lagoon in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, CNN reported citing an unnamed source. The child was snatched as he played at the water’s edge on Tuesday night, despite his parents’ effort to save him, by an alligator believed to be between 4 and 7 feet long. Officials are expected to hold a press conference shortly. Wildlife officials had earlier caught and killed five alligators from the lagoon to examine them for traces of the boy but found no evidence they were involved, said Nick Wiley, head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The resort closed its beaches and recreational marinas on Wednesday as search teams had scoured the Seven Seas Lagoon, a manmade lake reaching 14 feet in depth. REUTERS

Philly’s suburbs mirror state as political battleground in POTUS race Trump GETTY IMAGES
Trump supporters hoping conservatives outside the city can deliver state to Republican nominee for first time since 1988. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
In the Democratic fortress of Philadelphia, Donald Trump is persona non grata. Former Mayor Michael Nutter called Trump an ‘a-----’ and proposed banning him from the city. On Thursday, Philadelphia City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution to formally denounce Trump. But in the densely populated suburban counties around Philadelphia, Trump supporters believe they can be the swing vote that delivers the reliably blue state to the Republican nominee for the first time in nearly three decades. “He is the only Republican candidate out of the original 17 that has the ability to win Pennsylvania,” said Montgomery
County Commissioner Joe Gale. “It really is in play. He will do well in the suburbs surrounding Philadelphia, maybe he won’t win them, but he’ll hold his own enough that he can win statewide.” Pennsylvania hasn’t been won by a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. Public Policy Polling found earlier this month that the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Trump are even in Pennsylvania in a headto-head match, each with 44 percent of the vote. Clinton would edge Trump 41 percent to 40 percent with third-party candidates factored in. A Quinnipiac poll in May found Clinton beating Trump by 1 percent, 43 to 42. The mostly Republican suburbs mirror those mixed results.. “Trump” is the answer of Tom Kelly, 58, a resident of Glenolden in Delaware County, when asked who he’s voting for. “He’s a businessman. He can put people back to
work,” said Kelly, a retired roofing, siding, windows and door worker. “When it comes to politics, I’ve gotta give it to Hillary. She has the experience.” But other residents of the town weren’t so sure. “I’m voting for Hillary Clinton, only because Biden and Kasich are out. Between Trump and Clinton, it’s the worse of two evils,” said Jack Brady, 65. “The suburbs are all Republican — but that doesn’t mean they’re going to vote Republican,” said Anthony Pepe, 72, a Glenolden resident who supports Clinton.
and Independents,” said Bucks County Trump campaign volunteer Jeff McGeary. “He’s speaking up for the working class, dealing with outsourced jobs, which would be a more union or Democrattype message, but spoken by a Republican.” McGeary sees the electoral math adding up in Trump’s favor. “In Pittsburgh he can do very well. Philadelphia, he can do OK in the city, and fairly well in the surrounding counties, which would be enough to carry the state,” he said. While every politically incorrect statement Trump makes is another reason for liberals in Philadelphia to despise him, some suburban voters don’t see him that way. “I received hate mail saying that I was a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, after I endorsed Trump, but I also received positive letters,” Gale said. “Every time they think he put his foot in his mouth and that was the last straw, his numbers go up.”
“Every time they think he put his foot in his mouth and that was the last straw, his numbers go up.” Gale
“[Trump] is a radical to me. We have enough nuts up in Congress.” But the more politically active believe Trump will appeal to non-Republican voters. “Donald Trump has a more populist, Americafirst appeal, which is hitting on demographics of Democrats, Republicans

Meerkats roam ‘free’ in zoo’s Meerkat Maze gives visitors a chance to see South African mammals’ curiosity and social behavior. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
In the Small Mammal House, where the Philadelphia Zoo’s meerkats are kept, the ceiling is painted to look like the sky, giving the animals the illusion of more freedom. Now, it’s no illusion — the zoo’s six meerkats are free to gaze upward at the sky from a small maze of outdoor tunnels in the latest addition to the zoo’s unique open-air habitats. Meerkat Maze is the newest addition to the Philadelphia Zoo’s Zoo360, a first-in-theworld system of zoo-wide tunnels that expand animal habitats into path-
ways that allow creatures the freedom to travel over visitors to the zoo. So far, Big Cat Crossing (for tigers), Gorilla Treeway, Great Ape Trail and the Treetop Trail for lemurs and monkeys have freed those animals to explore their own unique pathways. As children and visitors watched, a bold meerkat named Ari slowly set his paw into the new pathway and embarked into the maze for the first time Thursday. Within minutes, all of the meerkats were roaming through tunnels, sandy play areas,
and ascending towers to look out at their surroundings. “Meerkats are absolutely so curious,” said Stephanie Oberlin, the meerkats keeper at the zoo, at the opening of the new tunnel system on Thursday. “They want to investigate every new thing. … A box is the most exciting thing they’ve ever seen for all of 15 minutes and then they move on.” “This is all new to them,” Oberlin said. “They’re going to hear storms or the red-capped mangabey make a call and it’s something they haven’t heard before, they might bark at it. We’ve seen them experience a peacock coming up to the cage. That train that just went by, that’s a new sound for them.” Meerkats, which are native to South Africa, are omnivores that travel in groups known as “mobs” looking for food, which in the wild can even include scorpions that they hunt

down and kill. Their new habitat includes a large play area with some insects in the sand for them to track, in addition to their normal diet of raw meat (but no scorpions). There’s also a parallel maze for children to explore “side by side with a meerkat,” Oberlin said. “They’re just really fun to watch, their behaviors, their interactions with each other, and how they’re moving with each other through this maze,” she said. Philadelphia Zoo Chief
Operating Officer Andrew Baker said meerkats are a great species for this type of exhibit due to their social behavior. “They are active, curious, engaging, social. Not that many carnivores are social in the wild, think about a tiger,” Baker said. “Their activity level, their curiosity, their iconic look — they are super engaging. Of course, The ‘Lion King’ did not hurt their profile.” Indeed, the most famous meerkat may be Timon from the
“Lion King” — who was voiced by Billy Crystal and is the companion of the beloved flatulent warthog Pumbaa. But meerkats, which belong to the mongoose family of mammals, have also been depicted in Animal Planet’s reality TV series “Meerkat Manor,”
which brought viewers into the world of meerkats, much as Meerkat Maze does. “You get to see the meerkats out and roaming, digging, just doing all the natural behaviors they would be doing in the wild,” Oberlin said of the maze. “They’re exploring.”
To assist visitors enjoying Zoo360, the zoo announced Thursday that it has a new app, Zoo360, which allows visitors to log sightings of the animals in the various special habitats on maps to help other animal lovers find them more easily.

Cops: Woman demands free food at Burger King drive-thru, shoots at staff A woman was arrested for allegedly shooting at staff inside a Mount Pocono Burger King.

A Mount Pocono woman was arrested Tuesday for allegedly firing a gun at a Burger King drive-thru after staff refused to give
her free food. Mary Check, 54, is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, the Stroud Area Regional Police Department announced.
Check was allegedly intoxicated when she pulled up to the Burger King around 11:09 a.m. Tuesday in a green minivan and began arguing with staff over a past order and demanding free food, police said.

“As the employee attempted to rectify Check’s complaint, Check continued to yell and became more irate,” a police report states. “After several minutes the employee returned to the window to speak with Check and observed Check pull out a black handgun and place it in her lap.” The employee shouted at co-workers that Check had a gun as they all moved away from the window, as Check pointed the gun out the window “and shouted to the employees that she was going to shoot them,” according to police. Check then fired, shattering the drive-thru window and striking the wall be-
hind the counter before fleeing the scene. No injuries to staff or customers were caused by the shooting. Soon after, Check was involved in another incident inside the Cloud Crest Motel in Mount Pocono, firing three shots at a male guest, according to the Pocono Record. One bullet went through a motel window, one hit an exterior wall and a third hit the gas tank of a car parked outside. The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department responded to the scene and took Check into custody. Check’s arraignment has not yet been scheduled.

Philly woman recalls Orlando horror Patience Carter addressed the world for the first time Tuesday. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Patience Carter went from having the time of her life to the worst night of her life in a matter of minutes. That’s how Carter, a Fox 29 intern from North Philadelphia and college student at NYU, described the horrific Orlando club shooting over the weekend. The world heard from Carter on Tuesday night for the first time in a news conference, when she recounted the harrowing hours she spent locked in the bathroom with the gunman. “I never thought in a million years that this could happen, Carter, 20, said from an Orlando hospital. “I never thought in a million years that my eyes could witness something
so tragic. “You laid beside individuals whose lives were brutally taken. The guilt of being alive is heavy. Carter was in Orlando with her friends Tiara Parker, 20, and Akyra Murray, 18. The three girls decided to go to Pulse Saturday night. They arrived just after midnight. “Akyra was the life of the party, literally. Everybody loved her, everyone just adored her. Tiara Parker, who is her cousin — we were just all having the night that we dreamed of. It was the most beautiful bonding experience that any three girls could have on their first night out on vacation. Just before 2 a.m., Parker had started to call an Uber for the girls to leave the club. That’s when they heard the gunshots. Carter said she didn’t realize the sound was gunshots at first, but instead a sound the club was playing, “like BB guns, to get

clubgoers to leave. Carter and her friends sought shelter in a bathroom with other clubgoers amid gunshots. The three women hid in a stall when Omar Mateen, identified as the gunman who killed 49 people that night, walked into the bathroom and began shooting. In another stall, there were bodies “piled on top
of each other on the toilet seat, Carter recalled from her wheelchair. She had been shot in both legs. Parker was shot in the side, and Murray was bleeding profusely from a wound to her arm. Murray, a recent graduate of West Catholic Prep, and Parker both died in the shooting. The gunfire stopped, and Mateen made a phone call. He told 911 the reason he was shooting is “because he wants America to stop bombing his country, Carter said. Then he pledged his allegiance to ISIS. After he got off the phone, Mateen started speaking in Arabic, though Carter said she didn’t immediately recognize the language.
Carter
“And after that, he even spoke to us directly. He said, ‘Are there any black people in here?’ I was too afraid to answer but there was an AfricanAmerican male in the stall where most of my body was ‌ [he] answered ‘Yes, there’s six or seven of us.’â€? “The gunman responded back to him saying, ‘I don’t have a problem with black people. This is about my country, you guys have suffered enough.’â€? Carter later described how police burst through the bathroom wall and rescued the survivors. As police called for people to move away from
the wall, Mateen entered the stall that Carter and her friends were in. “He said, ‘Hey you,’ to someone on the floor inside the bathroom and shot them. Shot another person. And then shot another person who happened to be directly behind me, who I’m told through the eyes of Tiara, shielded me with their own body to make sure that I wasn’t hit,â€? Carter said. “I don’t know who that person is, I don’t know the name of that person, but if they’re somewhere watching ‌ thank you, thank you for saving my life, literally.â€? Carter said the bullet had shattered her right femur bone and went through her left leg under the thigh. “I’m still here.â€?

The United States and Germany are the world’s top growers of hops. U.S. farmers plan to harvest their largest-ever hops crop, giving craft brewers who are struggling to match surging demand for beers with more aroma and bitterness reason to cheer. Farmers expect to harvest 51,115 acres of hops in 2016, up 17 percent, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said. “That is certainly good news for us,” said Benjamin Li Yu, chief executive of British Columbia-based Russell Breweries Inc. “I hope the increase is giving everyone room to breathe.” In 2015, sales volume of U.S. craft beer rose 12.8 percent domestically and 16.3 percent for exports, while overall U.S. beer sales eased 0.2 percent, according to Brewers Association in Boulder, Colorado. feared a hops shortage after adverse weather blighted last summer’s European harvest. Lager producers such as AnheuserBusch InBev also use hops, but in smaller amounts. Craft beer premiums cover rising hops prices, but Li Yu said finding enough supplies has been the biggest challenge. MillerCoors, owned by SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Co, has absorbed higher hops costs for some beers, like Blue Moon, said Warren Quilliam, senior director of brewing, malting and materials. But those costs are offset by low aluminum and fuel prices, and long-term contracts smooth out highs and lows, he said. It is likely that small breweries, who buy hops on the spot market, are paying the highest prices, said Viv Jones, brewmaster at Saskatchewan-based Great Western Brewing Company. The U.S. vinegrowing crop, which produces small green cones, is mainly grown in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. While U.S. farmers have fretted about sagging incomes, Idaho hop grower Nate Jackson is enjoying the high prices. He bought a 60-acre hop farm in 2008 and has expanded plantings tenfold. “[I’m] definitely lucky,” Jackson said. “I’m not sure anybody saw that [price hike] coming.” REUTERS

Fed: Interest rates unchanged, signals two hikes this year The U.S. central bank, however, lowered its economic growth forecasts for 2016 and 2017 and indicated it would be less aggressive in tightening monetary policy after the end of this year. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday and signaled it still plans two rate increases this year, saying it expects the U.S. job market to strengthen after a recent slowdown. Fed policymakers gave no indication =of when they might raise rates, though their projections leave the door open to an increase next month. “The pace of improvement in the labor

It added, however, that “economic activity will expand at a moderate pace and labor market indicators will strengthen even with gradual rate increases. Updated projections from Fed policymakers point to annual economic growth of only 2 percent for the foreseeable future, slightly lower than forecast at the March policy meeting. Policymakers have been worried about potential weakness in the U.S. labor market and the possibility of financial turmoil if Britain votes next week to leave the European Union. The Fed statement on Wednesday made no reference to that vote. “It’s as dovish as the Fed can get without actually cutting rates. Even [Kansas City Fed

President] Esther George withdrew her dissent. The path of rates is lower, which is a big dovish swing,â€? said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Fund Management. Financial markets all but priced out a rate increase this year after the Fed statement, and U.S. short-term interest rate futures contracts rose. U.S. stocks held on to their pre-meeting gains.Â
The Fed left its target range for overnight lending rates between banks at between 0.25 percent to 0.50 percent, keeping on hold a campaign to lift borrowing costs that started late last year. It raised rates in December for the first time in nearly a decade and signaled four increases were likely in 2016. Concerns about a global economic slowdown and volatility in financial markets subsequently reduced that number to two. Although worries about the health of the global economy have eased, a sharp slowdown in U.S. hiring in May was unsettling. More recent data have indicated that last month’s jobs report may have been a blip. The Fed statement said economic activity appeared to have picked up since April. REUTERS

Why Viagra Is Failing Men Soaring demand expected for new scientific advance made just for older men. Works on both men’s physical ability and their desire in bed. By Harlan S. Waxman Health News Syndicate New York – If you’re like the rest of us guys over 50; you probably already know the truth… “Viagra® doesn’t work! Simply getting an erection doesn’t fix the problem” says Dr. Bassam Damaj, chief scientific officer at the world famous Innovus Pharma Laboratories. As we get older, we need more help in bed. Not only does our desire fade; but erections can be soft or feeble, one of the main complaints with Viagra®. Besides, Viagra® is expensive… costing as much as $50.00 a pill. Plus, it does nothing to stimulate your brain to want sex. “I don’t care what you take, if you aren’t interested in sex, you can’t get or keep an erection. It’s physiologically impossible,” said Dr. Damaj.
MADE JUST FOR MEN OVER 50 But now, for the first time ever, there’s a pill made just for older men. It’s called Vesele®. A new pill that helps you get an erection by stimulating your body and your brainwaves. So Vesele® can work even when nothing else worked before. The new men’s pill is not a drug. It’s something completely different Because you don’t need a prescription for Vesele®, sales are exploding. The maker just can’t produce enough of it to keep up with demand. Even doctors are having a tough time getting their hands on it. So what’s all the fuss about?
WORKS ON YOUR HEAD AND YOUR BODY
THE SCIENCE OF SEX The study asked men, 45 to 65 years old to take the main ingredient in Vesele® once a day. Then they were instructed not to change the way they eat or exercise but to take Vesele® twice a day. What happened next was remarkable. Virtually every man in the study who took Vesele® twice a day reported a huge difference in their desire for sex. In layman’s terms, they were horny again. They also experienced harder erections that lasted for almost 20 minutes. The placebo controlled group (who received sugar pills) mostly saw no difference.
Satisfaction—Increase from 41.4% to 88.1% Frequency—Increase from 44.9% to 79.5% Desire—Increase from 47.9% to 82% Hardness—Increase from 36.2% to 85.7% Duration—Increase from 35% to 79.5% Hardness—Increase from 36.2% to 85.7% Ability to Satisfy—Increase from 44.1% to 83.3% AN UNEXPECTED BONUS: The study results even showed an impressive increase in the energy, brain-power and memory of the participants.
SUPPLY LIMITED BY OVERWHELMING DEMAND “Once we saw the results we knew we had a game-changer said Dr. Damaj. We get hundreds of calls a day from people begging us for a bottle. It’s been crazy. We try to meet the crushing demand for Vesele®.”

HERE’S WHAT MEN ARE SAYING • I’m ready to go sexually and mentally. • More frequent erections in the night (while sleeping) and in the morning. • I have seen a change in sexual desire. • Typically take 1 each morning and 1 each night. Great stamina results! • An increased intensity in orgasms. • My focus (mental) has really improved… Huge improvement. • Amazing orgasms! • I really did notice a great improvement in my ability.
HOW TO GET VESELE® This is the first official public release of Vesele® since its news release. In order to get the word out about Vesele®, Innovus Pharma is offering special introductory discounts to all who call.
THE BRAIN/ERECTION CONNECTION
In a 16-week clinical study; scientists from the U.S.A. joined forces to prove Nitric Oxide’s effects on the cardio vascular system. They showed that Nitric Oxide could not only increase your ability to get an erection, it would also work on your brainwaves to stimulate your desire for sex. The results were remarkable and published in the world’s most respected medical journals.
achieving and maintaining an erection and the results are remarkable” said Dr. Damaj. (His findings are illustrated in the charts below.)
JAW-DROPPING CLINICAL PROOF
The new formula takes on erectile problems with a whole new twist. It doesn’t just address the physical problems of getting older; it works on the mental part of sex too. Unlike Viagra®, the new pill stimulates your sexual brain chemistry as well. Actually helping you regain the passion and burning desire you had for your partner again. So you will want sex with the hunger and stamina of a 25-year-old. Vesele takes off where Viagra® only begins. Thanks to a discovery made by 3 Nobel-Prize winning scientists; Vesele® has become the first ever patented supplement to harden you and your libido. So you regain your desire as well as the ability to act on it.
New men’s pill overwhelms your senses with sexual desire as well as firmer, long-lasting erections. There’s never been anything like it before.
DOCTOR: “VESELE® PASSED THE TEST” “As a doctor, I’ve studied the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide on the body and the brain. I’m impressed by the way it increases cerebral and penile blood flow. The result is evident in the creation of Vesele®. It’s sure-fire proof that the mind/body connection is unbeatable when

Bernie Sanders does not plan to suspend his campaign and endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a video speech to supporters on Thursday, focusing instead on ways to pursue his policy agenda and reform goals, a spokesman said. Sanders, who has resisted pressure to exit the race and back Clinton in a show of party unity since she clinched the Democratic nomination last week, will address supporters nationwide on a video live stream on Thursday night. That raised expectations Sanders might formally pull the plug on his campaign. But spokesman Michael Briggs said on Wednesday the

speech will focus on how Sanders’ supporters can keep the fight alive on priorities such as raising the minimum wage and reducing the influence of big money in politics. “Tomorrow night, no, he’s not ending it, Briggs said of the campaign. “We’re working our way through that, how to go forward on that front. This message to support-
ers is going to be a lot broader than that.â€? Sanders, a senator from Vermont, has promised to continue his campaign to next month’s Democratic nominating convention in Philadelphia as leverage to force concessions from Clinton on his policy goals and on reforms he seeks in the Democratic Party’s nominating process. NASA to set fire in space for science and safety An unmanned cargo ship pulled away from the International Space Station on Tuesday to stage the first of three planned NASA experiments on how big fires grow in space, an important test for astronaut safety. Previous experiments in space were limited to the incineration of samples no bigger than an index card, said David Urban, lead researcher for the Spacecraft Fire Experiment, or Saffire. “We tried for years to find a vehicle and a circumstance where this would work and initially we’d get a ‘not on my spacecraft’ reaction,” Urban said during a NASA TV interview. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ultimately settled on using an Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo ship, which is designed to burn up in the atmosphere after it departs the space station.
Cygnus spacecraft WIKIPEDIA
The Cygnus, which departed the space station on Tuesday, was launched from Earth in March with more than 7,000 pounds of food, supplies and science experiments for the station, a research laboratory that flies about 250 miles above the planet. The cargo included Saffire, a module containing a 38-inch by 19-inch cotton-and-fiberglass material sample that will be set on fire after Cygnus reaches a safe distance from the station. The experiment will begin with hot wires igniting the sample. Air flowing through ducts
will fan the fire, which is expected to last about 20 minutes. “One of the big questions is how big will the flame get?” Urban said. Fire behaves differently outside of Earth’s atmosphere, so scientists want to test whether microgravity will limit flames and what materials will burn. The question is not academic. In February 1997, an oxygen-generating canister aboard the Russian Mir space station erupted into a searing flame, blocking the crew’s path to an emergency escape ship. The crew fought the fire with foam extinguishers and water and it eventually burned itself out, leaving a thick residue of soot. The Saffire experiment will be the largest fire set in space since the accidental blaze on Mir.

Three things to know about Demi and Nick’s Future Now tour 1. Jay Z and J.T. Inspired by Jay Z and Justin Timberlake’s 2013 stadium tour, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas will weave their sets together, sharing moments on stage. “It was really awesome how they came in and out of each other’s sets, so we’re going to something similar to that,” says the Lovato. Jonas adds: “[The show] seamlessly goes into Demi’s [set] and then mine, [then] together.” 2. Oversharing Without his brothers by his side, Jonas says he dishes more of himself than ever on his new album “Last Year Was Complicated.” He credits Lovato for “encouraging me to really open up about some things that happened in my life that I think will help people get even more connected to me.” “ Nick has been so honest with his music. I’m really proud of him,” she says. 3. Why they canceled their N.C. dates Jonas says their decision to cancel shows in North Carolina was to protest the state’s HB2 law. It’s official! Donald Glover will star in the new Spider-Man The 2010 internet campaign #donald4spiderman has finally paid off. Donald Glover is set to play a part in the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie. Andrew Garfield rolled in great success with his role as the “Amazing SpiderMan,” but when a fan by the name of “Rootadoo” commented on an article calling out the white casting of the franchise, he volunteered Glover as the perfect actor to play the superhero. When the idea hit the Twitterverse six years ago, it turned into a movement. Donald Glover himself got involved. In 2011, the actor launched his rap ca-

On the track “Not Going Back,” he raps: “Couldn’t see me as Spider-Man, but now I’m spittin’ venom. Now, you payin’ attention, pick your f–––n face up. When I wanna be a superhero I just wake up.” Spicy! It’s safe to say that Glover does NOT take rejection too kindly. sometimes say they actively sought out children’s fare because they wanted their kids or nieces or nephews to actually be able to watch their work. Being a parent of two, was that your idea, too? This is certainly the first thing my kids have been able to see that I’ve done. That was awesome. I would absolutely do more
Pixar films, or more kids’ films, as long as they are funny and good. There’s certainly some kids films I would not be interested in doing. [Laughs] You’ve played a lot of scuzzy, nasty characters. But here you get to play someone who’s really, really nice and sweet. The character didn’t start off nice. These characters
Real or make-believe? You play another mean character on the forthcoming show “The Mick. “Philadelphia is an ensemble show. How have you taken to playing the sole lead? In theory, it was intimidating, because if this doesn’t go well it all lands on me. But when we were shooting it I was having so much fun. It’s a role I feel really comfortable in. I wasn’t nervous
at all. I was very conďŹ dent that it was funny and it was turning out to be exactly what I had envisioned. Look, if it bombs wildly, it will all be on me. [Laughs] As long as I’m happy with it, I’m OK if it doesn’t do well. I’m not embarrassed by it in any way. I’m really excited for it. Let’s hope it does well, then I’ll take all the credit.
take so many different shapes before they land on something. So I started off as a bit of a nemesis to Dory. I got to do a lot of that in the beginning. But then it slowly changed. They realized Dory needed support, and they wanted this idea of family being what you make it, and if you don’t have a family you can create one yourself. So I needed to be on her side. So she got nicer and nicer. It was fun to play someone nice. I’m used to bitchy roles. It’s a real stretch to be nice. [Laughs] You seem nice in person. I’m kidding, I’m a nice person. I met someone the other day who said, “Wow, I was expecting you to be really mean! Because Sweet Dee’s so mean. I was like, [does a mousy voice] “No, I’m nice! MATT PRIGGE

Dashboard Confessional’s singalongs have tugged and mended many a teenage heart since their 2000 debut, “The Swiss Army Romance, and 2003’s “A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar. Lead singer, Chris Carrabba, now 41, is staging a casual Dashboard revival of sorts, following the band’s brief hiatus and a successful run with folk band Twin Forks. During the summer, Dashboard will join the Taste of Chaos tour with fellow emo era headliners Taking Back Sunday. Meanwhile, Carrabba is making his way through a new Dashboard album, the first since 2009’s “Alter the Ending. He calls from Nashville, his new home base, to discuss the band’s future and tour. What’s the status of the new album? Will it be released before the tour? I doubt it. I’m just working on the record and actively writing and

recording. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out later this year. I read something about this album having a narrative thread to it. You look for some kind of unifying thread, almost a narrative one in spirit, but it’s not intended to be a narrative album. When I put the songs together, you loosely look at where the story takes you, and that’s the question I ask myself when I’m making a record.
There were both personal and professional reasons to take time away from Dashboard, but it ended up being several years. What’s it like being back with the band? Our energy level is back top where it was. We toured and toured and it rounded out to like 280 to 300 days a year for more than a decade if I count my band before Dashboard [Further Seems Forever]. I’ll be totally honest, we got burned out and I felt like our relation-
ship with the audience couldn’t withstand us phoning in a tour while we figured out what to do next. I think the veil would have lifted. I didn’t think that would be fair to the audience. [Following the break], I didn’t know whether we were coming back, or when we were coming back. It took me going back to playing small clubs with Twin Forks and driving all night in a van to make it to the next show. Once you go back to your starting points, you realize how vital the process is to you and playing shows every night is the big reward.

game movies can work for anyone but diehard fans. And yet, here I sit, dumbfounded about the mass shooting in Orlando. Everything I’ve been trying to write sounds trite. How we should be kind to each other. How tolerance matters. All of it sounds like shouting into the abyss. Any argument I make for gun control will be met with arguments. Today, people tried to tell me that assault ries “aren’t weapons unless they're used as weapons,â€? even after I revealed that I myself was held up at gunpoint many years ago. out against gun violence and talking about the importance of gun control seem futile. And yet, I will talk about it, here, on social media — everywhere. I will continue to speak because it mattered when we stood up for marriage equality. It passed. It mattered when we talked about representation of girls and women in the media. We’re starting to hear producers and directors talk about it being important to show heroes (and villains) of every type. It mattered when Caitlyn Jenner spoke up. Laws are starting to change. We’ll never completely erase evil from the world. We’ll never stop violence and war. We will never stop hate. But we can keep on trying to breed more tolerance and peace. One person destroyed a lot of lives this weekend. What if we change one person’s mind by speaking out? What if we change two? How many lives will be saved if we do?

Ways to spend Father’s Day in Philly
Where to take your dad this weekend. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
He has enough ties, you never buy him the right golf balls and mom won’t let him smoke cigars anymore. Instead of wrapping up a gift for Father’s Day, give dad an experience out and about in the city. One size fits all, and some even include bacon.
For the fan On June 19, the Phillies are combining two classic American dad pastimes: watching baseball and wearing embarrassing Hawaiian shirts. The shirt is free thanks to a promotion from Chevrolet, but if you want to make the game extra-special, consider upgrading to a VIP package at McFadden’s. For $45 each, you’ll get
a ticket to the game, a two-hour pregame domestic draft open bar, an appetizer or sandwich and a two-hour postgame happy hour. Obviously, you’ll also want to factor in the cost of an Uber. 1 Citizens Bank Way, mlb.com
For the bacon connoisseur Jose Garces got right down to business for Father’s Day over at Village Whiskey. In addition to the usual burgers and booze, on June 19, the Center City restaurant will offer a special bacon-and-bourbon pairing. Available all day, the lineup includes five house-cured bacons, each matched with its own bourbon for $30. Who’s the favorite child? You are. 118 S. 20th St., village whiskey. com
For the art enthusiast If dad’s an art lover, consider buying him a membership to the Art Museum this year. Starting at $75, perks include general admission, as well as access to special events and exhibits. On Sunday, a members-only Father’s Day tour will explore the relationship between fathers and sons in the museum’s collection. 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, philamuseum.org

Ready for a Beer Week encore already? Yards offers free tours of their Delaware Avenue brewery every Saturday and Sunday from noon-4 p.m., while the tasting room is open daily, noon-7 p.m. For an extra-special Father’s Day, consider sending him to the Poconos, where Yards is teaming up with Ledges Hotel on June 19 for a Blues, Brews & Yards Brewing C. Take one of the world’s greatest road trips in Northern Ireland. MARIANNE COLAHAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Summer is the perfect time to travel to Northern Ireland. With temperatures in the 60s, late sunsets (there’s plenty of light as late as 10 p.m.) and seemingly endless miles of lush greenery to enjoy, the country offers a refreshing break from city heat. One of the best ways to explore Northern Ireland is along the country’s 120mile Causeway Coastal Route, which takes visitors between the cities of Belfast and Londonderry along the northeast coast. Don’t be intimidated that the Irish drive on the left side of the road — a little extra caution when turning is all you need. The route includes nine scenic drives that loop from the causeway, offering additional points of interest. The coastal drive showcases so much of what Northern Ireland has to offer, from craggy cliffs and rolling hills to waterfalls and exquisite beaches. The marked Causeway Coastal Route also has 17 scenic stops in addition to the nine other scenic drives. Depending on how long you plan to take on your road trip — we
recommend between three and five days — you can stop at every site along the way. If you’re taking a more expedited route, we’ve highlighted some of the most iconic points from the Causeway Coastal Route:
Carrickfergus Castle The first stop on the Causeway Coastal Route after Belfast, Carrickfergus is one of the oldest castles in Northern Ireland. Beautifully preserved, this medievalera castle was built in the 12th century and has withstood many military conflicts.
outcroppings and a series of caves that visitors can explore.
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Located near Ballintoy Harbour, the Carrick-aRede Rope Bridge links the mainland of Northern Ireland to the tiny island of Carrick. Fishermen originally constructed the rope bridge in 1755, hanging nearly 100 feet above the rocky shore, so they could check on their salmon nets.
Giant’s Causeway
One of the first stops after beginning the route in Belfast, the Gobbins Cliff Path was first designed in 1902 and has been renovated extensively to offer a welcoming tourist destination. It includes an exposed walkway over the Irish Sea that offers unmatched views of the basalt coastline.
One of the most celebrated places on the Causeway Coastal Route is Giant’s Causeway. The area is comprised of 40,000 basalt columns that jut out into the ocean. The site’s name has its roots in legends that claim it was built by giants (it was actually the result of an ancient volcanic eruption — either way, it’s a completely unique geographic marvel and a UNESCO World Heritage protected site).
Cushendun
Mussenden Temple
The small coastal village of Cushendun is a charming and scenic stop north of the Glens of Antrim, with Cornish touches built to please the area baron’s wife. The village is also surrounded by dramatic beaches with rocky
High above the northwestern coast of Northern Ireland, the Mussenden Temple overlooks the Atlantic. Built in 1785, the temple was originally a summer library and was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. The

How many reps will Birds’ third-stringer Wentz get? The Eagles must balance reps for their starter and for the QB of the future this summer. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The Eagles have a unique quarterback situation on their hands, and head coach Doug Pederson will have some tough decisions to make when training camp convenes in late July. Sam Bradford is the starter, and got all of the first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp with Chase Daniel playing with the 2s, and rookie Carson Wentz playing with the 3s. However, despite the fact that Wentz — the No. 2 overall pick in May’s NFL draft and the future of the franchise — played with the third-stringers, he got pretty close to the same number of reps as his fellow QBs. “Right now, it’s equal; it’s thirds,” Pederson said last week before minicamp broke for the sixweek summer break. “It’s equal and right now leaning toward that going into training camp.” There is not much precedent for Pederson

to go off of, as far as how to train and practice his quarterbacks this offseason. One instance he used for reference is the situation in Green Bay from about a decade ago. “I haven’t gone back and studied exactly how they handled those situations,” Pederson said. “Obviously, you can see it from afar, the Aaron Rodgers-Brett Favre deal, and even as far back as [Joe] Montana and Steve Young in that situation. But I haven’t gone as far as studying how they practiced, the number of reps or things of that nature. I haven’t

looked that far into it.” Pederson will just go with his gut during his first training camp as an NFL head coach, and hopefully properly balance Bradford’s need to prepare for the season with Wentz’s to prepare for the future. “It will ultimately be myself and [offensive coordinator Frank Reich] having those conversations and saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get Sam and Chase enough reps as you go,’” Pederson said. So how does all of this fly with Wentz himself ? He knows he can’t play with the first team, even
though he wants to. “As a competitor you want those reps but you have to find a way to learn,” he said last week. “Whether it’s in the film room, watching from the back or getting live reps, either way I’ll be learning. “I need to continue to watch film and learn the nuances of it … you can never spend enough time studying the playbook, studying the film.” The simple fact is, Wentz will be a sponge this offseason, and whether he is on the field throwing the football or watching from the sidelines — or watching film — the rookie will be growing as an NFL player. “[I think] where he needs to improve, is a little bit in his fundamentals: his lower body and footwork,” Pederson said. “He gets a little long in his stride. And then just understanding why certain plays are called, which he probably understood in his offense in college at North Dakota State and now he needs to figure out and learn why [Frank Reich] or I are calling certain plays in practice and put all those pieces together. And that’s part of the maturity and the growth for young quarterbacks in any offense.”

Saric ‘99 percent to go to Philadelphia,’ foreign newspaper says Dario Saric was drafted in 2014 but has yet to step on American soil (to play an NBA basketball game). According to a Croatian newspaper, that will change this fall. The Croatian guard is heading to Philadelphia. Saric, 22, has played in Turkey for the last two season, averaging 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 2015-16. His Turkish club will need to buy him out for about $900,000, but the 76ers are expected to pay for most or all of this clause. A Reddit user translated a newspaper article into English, with a headline reading “Dario Saric: 99 percent to go to Philadelphia.” “We’d like [Saric] to come over. We expressed that to him,” Sixers presi-

dent Bryan Colangelo told reporters earlier this week. Colangelo also chatted about Joel Embiid, who has been actively working out at PCOM while Sixers front office members watch college athletes “audition” for the team ahead of next week’s NBA draft. He told Tom Moore of The Intelligencer that “Joel Embiid will not play summer league basketball. We can rule that out.” But he does optimistically expect Embiid to be ready for the start of the regular season. As for the trio of big men the Sixers will have if Embiid is able to play? The majority of pundits and 76ers’ media members expect Jahlil Okafor to be the most likely to be moved. EVAN MACY

Here are five reasons why the event, starting Thursday on Fox, is can’tmiss television:
