CIA DIRECTOR SAYS ISLAMIC STATE STILL SERIOUS THREAT

1

Islamic State’s “terrorism capacity and global reach” have not been reduced, the director of the CIA said, adding that the group has tens of thousands of fighters around the world, far more than Al Qaeda had at its height. John Brennan told U.S. lawmakers in a rare public hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in a stronger position than he was a year ago, bolstered by Russian air strikes against moderate opposition. “Despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism and global reach,” Brennan testified, using an acronym for the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS. SHERIFF: PROBE OF RESORT AFTER ALLIGATOR DEATH NOT CRIMINAL

2

The probe into the death of a 2-year-old boy likely drowned by an alligator at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, is not criminal in nature, the local sheriff ’s office said Thursday. Police divers recovered the body of Lane Graves on Wednesday from the man-made lake where he had been snatched by the alligator as he played at the water’s edge the night before. The investigation is continuing, said Orange County Sheriff ’s Department spokeswoman Rose Silva, adding, “It’s not criminal in nature at this time.” She did not provide further details. A Disney spokeswoman has said the company would review the posted signs that ban swimming in Seven Seas Lagoon but do not specifically warn about alligators. REUTERS

SENATE INCHES CLOSER TO GUN CONTROL SHOWDOWN AFTER MASSACRE

3

The Senate inched closer to scheduling votes on limited gun-control measures after a Florida nightclub massacre, with Democrats challenging Republicans to defy the national gun lobby and vote for new restrictions. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and fellow Democrats seized control of the Senate floor for 15 straight hours demanding congressional action. They ended their speeches before dawn, citing a Republican pledge to hold votes soon on measures to expand background checks on gun buyers and prevent people on terrorism watch lists from buying guns. California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose proposal would allow the U.S. attorney general to stop any terrorist suspect from acquiring a gun, told reporters the gun control votes would likely be held Tuesday. REUTERS

Why drive to work when you can Park&Pedal? Program adding more than a dozen free parking lots for the morning commute. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

It’s been nearly a year since the launch last summer of Park&Pedal, a firstof-its-kind program that encourages Boston commuters to drive part of the way to work, park in a free parking lot outside the city, then bike downtown. Now the program is gearing up for a growth spurt. At a festival at Herter Park in Allston, the initiative’s organizers said they planned to announce 15 new parking lot waypoints in Greater Boston, the latest development for an idea that has so far taken as many as 100 cars off the road during rush hour. “Really the focus of the program is to reduce the distance they have to ride and reduce the stress level,” said David Montague, who launched Park&Pedal last summer. “The average American lives about 12 miles from work, but the average American doesn’t want to ride a bicycle 12 miles to work. What Park&Pedal does is it bridges that gap.” Montague also owns a company in Cambridge that makes foldable bikes. The program designates portions of parking lots, which otherwise have parcels of unused empty spaces, with special signage. Most of the lots are run by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation and are totally free to use — with the exception of some that have long-term meters in place, and one at the Arsenal Mall, for which

A rider cycles down Boston streets. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

“Really the focus of the program is to reduce the distance they have to ride and reduce the stress level.” Montague

commuters are asked to print out a free parking pass on the Park&Pedal website. Most are near bike paths or bike lanes — an effort to make things easier for novice bikers. Find the full list of locations on the group’s website. Montague said between 75-100 people use the spaces every day. The locations of the 15 new waypoints were set to be announced Friday, at a celebration to be attended by Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack and other officials. Afterward, attendees were invited to join a group bicycle commute. It starts at 7:30 a.m. Pollack said she uses

Park&Pedal every now and then. “Having free parking within a few miles of work makes it much easier to incorporate a little exercise into my daily routine while doing my part to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce greenhouse gases,” Pollack said in a statement. Park&Pedal users right now make up a tiny fraction of commuters, but Boston can use all the traffic-alleviation it can get right now. The city is among the worst in the nation when it comes to gridlock, and the problem is projected to get even worse in the near future. It can also be a costsaver for those who would otherwise pay top dollar

to park their cars downtown. “The best incentives for it are exercise and free parking around Boston — that, as you know, is a rarity,” said Peter Sutton, MassDOT’s bicycle and pedestrian program coordinator. “So for a lot of people that’s really hitting the sweet spot.” So it’s catching on, but Montague and state officials are hoping even more people will kick their driving-to-work habit. Ultimately, he said, Park&Pedal is an awareness campaign about an often-ignored life hack. Commuters can always choose to opt out of driving in the ultra-congested city core, but too few do. “If I can make them change their habits, that’s what we’re after,” he said. “We want them to change the habit of getting in the car and driving all the way to work every single day.”

Authorities are preparing to auction belongings that formerly belonged to convicted gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, and now photos have been released showing the items up for bid. On Saturday, June 25, the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center will host the Bulger auction with proceeds to be divided between the families of people killed by Bulger or his associates and individuals found to have been extorted by his criminal organization, CBS Boston reported. The belongings were confiscated from the Santa Monica apartment where Bulger was liv-

ing when he was finally caught in 2011, according to Fox25, which added that an online auction will also start June 25. The items can now be viewed on the Gaston and Sheehan auction website by potential buyers looking to browse. Up for auction is Bulger’s Stanley Cup ring, thought to have once been owned by player Chris “Knuckles” Nilan, which was the

only ring that Bulger wanted to keep, according to a court filing referenced by CBS Boston. Also available for bidding will be a wooden crucifix starting at $10, a military shovel starting at $15 and a boxing mannequin starting at $85. Bulger, 86, was on the run for 16 years before being convicted of participating in 11 murders, Fox25 reported. He is now serving a life sentence. JASON NUCKOLLS

Just a scant few weeks ago, protestors were raging to shut the roaring mouth of Donald Trump. Whipping out their poster boards and Sharpies, donning their best cargo pants and hoisting their cellphones, they stormed the streets trying to blockade his events, shout down his followers and hopefully capture some blatant oppression on video. Now, it looks like they should have rolled out a red carpet, set up a mic and prepared nachos. Turns out the quickest way to beat Trump may be to let him talk. The billionaire from New York, who was already one of the least trusted and least liked candidates in modern history, has sunk even lower. A Washington Post/ABC News poll has found seven out of 10 Americans now have an unfavorable opinion of him. Think about this. What this poll means is

don’t know. Maybe it was Trump’s wholly unexpected, inexplicable and racially charged attack on an American judge. Perhaps it was his furious assault on the media, or his calamitous relations with members of his own party, or his overall combative response to almost any challenge. Or maybe ‌ just maybe ‌ the novelty has worn off. Maybe under a barrage of criticism by Democrats and Republicans alike, more voters are beginning to look beyond Trump’s made-for-TV bombast and they don’t like what they see. To be sure, the polls say the voters still do not think much of Hillary Clinton either, putting her unfavorable rating at 55 percent. So I stand by my assessment: She can still find a way to lose this election. But not if Trump hands her the win. And right now, he appears to be doing just that.

Warren, a leading progressive voice among Democrats, is among those Democratic presidential candidate Clinton is vetting for the vice presidential position, the newspaper reported. Clinton’s rival Bernie Sanders is not, it added. Sources told Reuters earlier this month that Warren, who represents Massachusetts, is considering the potential role. Representatives for Clinton, Sanders and Warren did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the report. Clinton is the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential election, having won the last primary contest this week in the District of Columbia. Although Clinton and Sanders met this week, the senator from Vermont does not plan to end his campaign or endorse Clinton. NEWS President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden pause after laying flowers for the victims of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub Sunday at a memorial at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday. GETTY IMAGES

Obama meets massacre survivors, assails homegrown terrorism Sunday’s attack ranks as the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. President Barack Obama met survivors of a gay nightclub massacre and relatives of the 49 people killed on Thursday and said the United States must act to control gun violence and fight what he called homegrown terrorism. “The last two terrorist attacks on our soil — Orlando and San Bernardino — were homegrown,” Obama told reporters. “We’re going to have to do more to prevent these

kinds of events from occurring. It’s going to take more than just our military. It’s going to take more than just our intelligence community.” Obama and Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Orlando, Florida, four days after a U.S.-born gunman claiming allegiance to various Islamist militant groups carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history. The United States has made it too easy for disturbed or wrathful people to legally acquire highpowered weapons like the assault rifle used in the attack on Sunday, Obama

said. “I held and hugged” grieving family members before laying flowers at a memorial for the victims of the attack on the Pulse nightclub, he said. Police killed the gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, a U.S. citizen born in New York to Afghan immigrants. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack but U.S. officials have said they do not believe Mateen was assisted from abroad. CIA Director John Brennan told a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday that the agency had “not been able to uncover any direct link” between Mateen

and militants abroad. A married couple also claiming allegiance to Islamic State shot dead 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December. Orlando mourned the dead after what was also the worst attack in America on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Wakes were under way for at least three victims: Kimberly Morris, Anthony Luis Laureano Disla and Roy Fernandez. Twenty-three of the 53 wounded remained hospitalized, six in critical condition, according to Orlando Regional Medical Center. REUTERS

Health agency reports US babies with Zikarelated birth defects Three babies have been born in the United States with birth defects linked to likely Zika virus infections in the mothers during pregnancy, along with three cases of lost pregnancies linked to Zika, federal health officials said on Thursday. The six cases reported as of June 9 were included in a new U.S. Zika pregnancy registry created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said it will begin regular reporting of poor outcomes of pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Zika has caused alarm throughout the Americas since numerous cases of the birth defect microcephaly linked to the mosquito-borne virus were reported in Brazil, the country hardest hit by the current outbreak. tentially severe developmental problems. The U.S. cases so far involve women who contracted the virus outside the United States in areas with active Zika outbreaks, or were infected through unprotected sex with an infected partner. There have not yet been any cases reported of local transmission of the virus in the United States. Health experts expect local transmission to occur as mosquito season gets underway with warmer weather, especially in Gulf Coast states such as Florida and Texas. The CDC declined to provide details of the three cases it reported on Thursday, but said all had brain abnormalities consistent with congenital Zika virus infection. Two U.S. cases of babies with microcephaly previously were reported in Hawaii and New Jersey. The poor birth outcomes reported include those known to be caused by Zika, such as microcephaly and other severe fetal defects, including calcium deposits in the brain indicating possible brain damage, excess fluid in the brain cavities and surrounding the brain, absent or poorly formed brain structures and abnormal eye development, the CDC said. A funny story But parental advice doesn’t always work out. Hart remembers a time he watched his dad lose a fight while trying to teach an important lesson. “My dad said, ‘You don’t let nobody push you around. You handle yourself at all times, be a man,’” Hart says, chuckling. “And he got into it with this guy. Me and my brother were in the car. This guy hit my dad with two of the hardest punches I’ve ever seen in my life. It was so fast: pat-pat! The guy even said something like, ‘I didn’t want to do this in front of your kids!’ My dad got back into the car, closed the door and started driving. It was just quiet. We were like, ‘Guess he’s not going to say something about it. Let’s just act like he won in a couple days.’ “The lesson I learned here was to duck,” Hart adds.

With “Central Intelligence,” the question of high school is bound to come up. In the actioncomedy, Kevin Hart and

Dwayne Johnson play former high schoolers who reunite 20 years after graduation. Hart’s Calvin was the most popular kid in school; he wound up a bored office drone. Johnson’s Bob, meanwhile, was a bullied kid who turned into a muscled super-spy. Hart’s story about the good old days is nice; Johnson’s is not. “I was a popular kid. You guys can tell I was a

really cool guy,” Hart says. “I wasn’t the best student, but I was a people person. I was the one who got along with any and everybody. There was no segregation, from the athletes to the non-athletes, to the people into education to the people who played hooky. To get embraced by everybody was a good feeling. It kept me out of fights. The funny guy stops the fights and makes people want to laugh about it. Everyone walks away saying, ‘Kevin is right.’” Johnson’s stories aren’t so rosy. He was a troubled youth, arrested multiple times before he was 16. “I spent a lot of time trying to get back on the right track,” Johnson says. “It wasn’t until I got involved with sports and athletics that I had a focus.” It’s not unusual to talk about deeper stuff when talking “Central Intelligence,” which is on one hand a silly blockbuster. On the other it deals with things like fear of failure, fear of aging, even bullying.

“I believe in the whole anti-bullying thing,” Hart says, adding, “As a kid I think you need a bit of drama. I don’t like the people who are trying to make these kids’ lives perfect. You have to go through something. You need to build character. Within situations that make you feel uncomfortable come life lessons. “I have two kids myself. I’m hoping my son gets into some stuff at a young age and comes to me. Then I’ll say, ‘Hey, man, figure it out!’” Hart continues. “You’ve got to figure it out when you’re on your own. You don’t want the kid to be 18 and he’s approached with his first fight and he’s like, ‘Dad! She hit me in the back of the head!’ I don’t want to shelter my kids. You can’t stop these things from happening. You can communicate. Just make sure people understand their selfworth and their value.”

If spoilers and trailers have taught us anything, it’s that something intensely bad is brewing at Litchfield Penitentiary as Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black enters Season 4 on Friday. “It gets more and more tense. Tensions are rising, dishes star Taylor Schilling. “Things are getting worse. Schilling plays Piper Chapman, a young woman jailed for smuggling drug money across the border. At the start of Season 4, we see Chapman — following a unionized revolt by fellow inmates she’s recruited/manipu-

lated into a surprisingly lucrative underground used panty-selling scheme — feeling the wrath of her betrayals, both physically and emotionally. While Schilling is well aware her character has earned a fair share of haters, she still feels that Piper is a sort of anti-hero. “I think there’s something heroic in trying to be yourself. She’s trying that desperately, explains Schilling. “She’s definitely trying to figure out who she is, so I think I appreciate her a real lot. The 31-year-old Wayland native says she’s definitely hoping her character makes her way out of prison someday, but offset, she’s more red carpet

ready than orange jumpsuit material. “I just finished two films over the break. One is with the Duplass brothers, and another is a movie called ‘The Titan,’ with Sam Worthington and Tom Wilkinson, she adds. “It’s a really exciting time. And when she’s stuck in her own house (not the big house), Schilling loves a good binge-watching session like the rest of her fans. Though she doesn’t watch a ton of TV, she loves fellow Netflix original, “House of Cards, and HGTV’s “Fixer Upper — and of course: “I love ‘Bob’s Burgers’! “Orange is the New Black Season 4 premieres on Netflix this Friday.

Zdeno Chara helped bring a Stanley Cup to Boston, but that was five years ago. It’s time for the franchise to make a major move. GETTY IMAGES

BRUINS NEED TO MAKE A TRADE AT THE DRAFT DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard

Crazy to think that it’s already been five years since the Boston Bruins hoisted the Stanley Cup. It was five years ago on Wednesday, to be exact, but it feels longer than that. As I watched Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins raise the Cup on Sunday night in San Jose, it made me immediately search for the date of the NHL Draft. Not because I think the Bruins will select a player who can step right in and lead them back to the promised land, but because I want to know just how much time Don Sweeney and the boys on Causeway Street have to get nuts. And when I say “get nuts,” I don’t mean actually selecting players at Nos. 14 and 29 overall, which are the two first-round picks the Bruins are scheduled to make next week, on June 24. The B’s obtained the No. 29

overall pick from San Jose last offseason, when they traded goaltender Martin Jones to the Sharks. Jones was acquired in the Bruins’ trade with Los Angeles, which sent Milan Lucic to the Kings. Lucic was a key piece to the B’s Stanley Cup team in 2011. His physical presence defined “Bruins hockey.” Now, as the Black and Gold attempt to snap a two-year playoff absence, they have work to do to try and recapture the identity that also brought them back to the Stanley Cup Final in 2013. Even that loss to the Blackhawks seems like a lifetime ago. Mainly because it’s been all downhill from there. Say what you want about the NHL Draft. The way I look at it, it’s nothing more than a seven-round affair with no guarantees. Every year we know the top two or three names at the top of the

draft. Those players are the closest thing to the “sure thing” that you’ll get. Now, that’s not to say later draft picks can’t be cornerstone pieces to a franchise. They can. It’s just not as probable, and after missing out of the playoffs the last two years the Bruins aren’t in position to rely on picks 14 and 29 to dig them out of their hole. If that’s the mindset, you might as well not even show up next season. The only mindset the Bruins’ front office should have is one of creativity. When I say “creativity,” I mean make a trade. And when I say “make a trade,” I mean it’s time to get nuts. Now, of course, they would have been better suited had they taken my advice at this past trade deadline and traded Loui Eriksson and Zdeno Chara for draft picks, preferably first-round draft picks. Eriksson is most likely gone, via

free agency. Chara is still the team’s captain. So at least you can still trade one of those two players. The B’s have other assets, too. They have the three first-round prospects they drafted last year at Nos. 13, 14, and 15 overall. They have the two aforementioned first-rounders this year. And for the right deal, my only untouchable on the Bruins current roster is Patrice Bergeron. Do with that what you will, but as I sit here wearing my imaginary GM cap, it’s pretty clear what the Bruins need: defense. It’s time for the team’s real-life GM to put together a trade package that will replace at least one of the two top-four defensemen — Johnny Boychuk and Dougie Hamilton — they traded away for draft picks over the last 20 months. Some of these

draft picks may turn out to be valuable pieces to the puzzle at some point, but given the status of players like Bergeron, David Krejci, Brad Marchand, and even Tuukka Rask, why would Sweeney and Cam Neely want to waste their prime years? So as we approach next week’s NHL Draft, there’s only one thing the Bruins should do. They should make a blockbuster trade that will land them the top defenseman they so desperately need. A move like that, along with more playing time for someone like Colin Miller, could make all the difference in the world for a Bruins team that needs to get back to playing the style their coach wants them to. If not, before you know it, that Stanley Cup drought will be 10 years. And it will feel like a whole lot longer than that.

what an embarrassment of riches that Argentina possesses. The key for Venezuela will be to not get too flustered when Argentina scores since that is

basically a given. Similar to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA — when Argentina’s high-powered offense gets rolling, there isn’t much that most teams can do to stop them. Each of Venezuela’s wins were by one goal and then they had the draw with Mexico, so they are used to playing in tight, low-scoring affairs. They figure to only get a few good chances in the offensive zone so they have to make the most of them. Defender Jose Manuel Velazquez, striker Josef Martinez and striker Salomon Rondon all have scored one goal apiece for Venezuela at 2016 Copa America. Additionally, Argentina is sure to dominate in possession (thus wearing down the opposition) so anytime that Venezuela can get the ball they have to hold onto it for as long as they can. Defending for the majority of a match against Argentina is a surefire recipe for disaster.
