CIA DIRECTOR SAYS ISLAMIC STATE STILL SERIOUS THREAT

1

Islamic State’s “terrorism capacity and global reach” have not been reduced, the director of the CIA said, adding that the group has tens of thousands of fighters around the world, far more than Al Qaeda had at its height. John Brennan told U.S. lawmakers in a rare public hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in a stronger position than he was a year ago, bolstered by Russian air strikes against moderate opposition. “Despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism and global reach,” Brennan testified, using an acronym for the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS. SHERIFF: PROBE OF RESORT AFTER ALLIGATOR DEATH NOT CRIMINAL

2

The probe into the death of a 2-year-old boy likely drowned by an alligator at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, is not criminal in nature, the local sheriff ’s office said Thursday. Police divers recovered the body of Lane Graves on Wednesday from the man-made lake where he had been snatched by the alligator as he played at the water’s edge the night before. The investigation is continuing, said Orange County Sheriff ’s Department spokeswoman Rose Silva, adding, “It’s not criminal in nature at this time.” She did not provide further details. A Disney spokeswoman has said the company would review the posted signs that ban swimming in Seven Seas Lagoon but do not specifically warn about alligators. REUTERS

SENATE INCHES CLOSER TO GUN CONTROL SHOWDOWN AFTER MASSACRE

3

The Senate inched closer to scheduling votes on limited gun-control measures after a Florida nightclub massacre, with Democrats challenging Republicans to defy the national gun lobby and vote for new restrictions. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and fellow Democrats seized control of the Senate floor for 15 straight hours demanding congressional action. They ended their speeches before dawn, citing a Republican pledge to hold votes soon on measures to expand background checks on gun buyers and prevent people on terrorism watch lists from buying guns. California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose proposal would allow the U.S. attorney general to stop any terrorist suspect from acquiring a gun, told reporters the gun control votes would likely be held Tuesday. REUTERS

Café aims to bring change through empowerment The Dream Big Innovation Center and 3 Cats Café in Brownsville will have a grand opening this weekend. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Some might think black cats bring bad luck, but for a trio of Brownsville sisters, the felines will help them live out their dream and hopefully bring positive change to their long-troubled neighborhood. Ionna, Diana and Melissa Jimenez are the sisters behind the 3 Black Cats Café, scheduled to open its doors Saturday in Brownsville. The café — which is set to offer pastries, custom cakes, sandwiches, coffees, teas and more — is opening in conjunction with the Dream Big Innovation Center, which will offer mentorship for local entrepreneurs. Brownsville has one of the highest concentration of project housing in the country and sees high unemployment and crime rates, according to the nonprofit. A total of 14 percent of residents in the neighborhood are unemployed and the median yearly income is $25,000. The opening of both sites, at 3 Belmont Ave., comes after the Dream Big Foundation — a nonprofit aimed at empowering underserved communities — asked Brownsvillians for ideas on how to help their community. One popular idea was to open a coffee shop. “They wished that there was a place to connect, to decompress and relax,” said Pernell S. Brice, executive director of Dream Big Foundation. “We realized that there was a need, but

also through our different visits, we realized there are a lot of brilliant people that need the opportunity.” After interviewing residents, the nonprofit decided to seek entrepreneurs with a business plan and help make their dream come true — which is where the Jimenez sisters came in. The sisters were raised in Brownsville and lived in public housing, which has since been revitalized. Now living in Crown Heights, Ionna Jimenez went back to Brownsville to do outreach for

the New York City Housing Authority to try to get former residents to return to the area. “When you are growing up in a community like Brownsville, all you think about is leaving ... and not coming back,” Jimenez said. “As a grown up, I fell in love with the community that I was raised in.” After a few years her sister Diana also became an outreach worker in the neighborhood and began baking. The sisters dreamed of a way to make affordable treats. They learned about the Dream Big Foundation’s interest in opening the center and café, and pitched their business plan. The Dream Big Innovation center and cafe will serve as a place for entrepreneurs in the neighborhood to get training, men-

torship and have get seed money for their business. The center will also feature a co-working space, desks, conference room and open space in the basement for events. “We want people to step in our doors and feel like they are in a different world, where they are able to dream big and take their mind off of things,” Brice said Jimenez believes many of the issues that plague the neighborhood come from lack of resources. She says that once those tools are present, change will begin to happen. “When there aren’t resources in the community, you have the narrative of high crime and poverty and all of those things,” she said. “We just have to provide [the people] with tools and resources for them to jump-start and get ready to become entrepreneurs and open businesses and make the change.” Jimenez said it’s crucial for Brownsville residents to work together to bring change to the area they call home. “The café is a visual, consistent message of change and realizing that change can happen from within,” Jimenez said. “We don’t need people to come from outside of Brownsville to say, ‘These are the changes.’”

Audit: NYC kids left to suffer after ‘shoddy’ child services probes A comptroller’s report discovered that in the last decade, there were 30 cases in which children died because of poor oversight. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Weeks after an audit claimed the city’s Administration for Children’s Services was giving up on children in its juvenile justice program, the city comptroller is once again holding the agency’s feet to the fire. City Comptroller Scott Stringer released Thursday morning a new audit on the ACS claiming that the agency is potentially putting thousands of children at risk through inconsistent, incomplete and “shoddy” investigations. According to Stringer,

auditors discovered that on multiple instances ACS failed to conduct required check-ins with alleged victims of abuse or neglect; didn’t evaluate homes for signs of domestic violence; and ignored staff concerns about being overburdened by high caseloads. The audit — which examined a sample of 25 cases — also found that in the last 10 years, there have been 30 incidents in which children died because of “shoddy investigations and poor oversight.” “After years of horror stories about children dying under their care and pledges by ACS to reform itself, our audit uncovered an unchanged agency, rife with mismanagement and bureaucratic inaction,” Stringer said. ACS said Thursday that the 25 cases reviewed by Stringer represent “an extremely small sample given the thousands of

cases per year.” The agency said it has 10.2 child protective caseloads per worker and plans to hire an additional 475 child protective specialists and 25 child protective specialist supervisors. It also has created two new child protective offices in the Bronx and Brooklyn — which see the largest number of cases — and plans to increase training and conduct full analysis of the agency’s policies and procedures. “The de Blasio administration has invested over $122 million to strengthen the child welfare system, $50 million alone to increase staffing and training for those who carry out the critical work of protecting children,” an ACS spokeswoman said. “ACS will continue to strengthen our administrative processes. However, it is important to note that in each of the 25 cases that the comptroller reviewed, the children

involved are safe and the families have received appropriate services.” Each year, ACS handles roughly 60,000 reports of child abuse and neglect through its Division of Child Protection with each case being handled by a team that is expected to determine the safety risk level of each child. Stringer’s audit investigated ACS’s protocols for handling child abuse and neglect allegations from July 1, 2013 through May 31, 2015.

The audit found that after allegations of abuse, investigations were incomplete and left kids at risk. Although staff are required to meet with children every other week, out of the 25 cases reviewed, auditors found that the meetings happened in just one case. According to the audit, in one case a drunk father grabbed a 15-yearold girl by her hair and slapped her across the face and then threw the girl’s mother to the floor, slapping and choking her. In this incident, nearly a month passed between visits with the child’s caseworker. Other findings include supervisors not reviewing cases consistently or on time; the agency not properly screening homes for signs of domestic violence in about two-thirds of cases; notes were not adequately kept for cases; and ACS leadership ignor-

ing caseworkers who said staffing resources were inadequate to fully investigate allegations. Caseworkers who spoke to auditors said that the 10 to 12 cases they each handle are double the number they “could reasonably handle.” “Children are being left to suffer in abusive households, and in the face of this damning audit, ACS has the audacity to claim that everything is under control,” Stringer said. Stringer recommended the ACS demand that staff fully investigate all allegations of abuse; ensure managers and supervisors complete reviews on time; and look into whether the agency actually has the capability to go through an investigation. “No child should have to spend a single night in an unsafe home, and it’s government’s job to make sure that doesn’t happen,” he said.

New renderings give sneak peek inside citywide ferry boats The renderings of the ferries INCAT CROWTHER

New Yorkers are getting an inside look at the new state-of-the–art ferryboats expected to hit the water — and connect 21 neighborhoods — by next year. Mayor Bill de Blasio released new renderings on Thursday of the Citywide Ferry vessels that

will launch phase one of the service in summer 2017 and be operated by Hornblower Inc. The ferry service — which will include 19 boats and cover more than 60 miles of the city’s waterways — is the first in more than a century and will cost rid-

ers the same as a subway ride. It will connect neighborhoods such as Astoria, the Rockaways, Bay Ridge and the Lower East Side. The new renderings, designed by Incat Crowther, showcase the features the vessels are expected to provide

including charging stations, concessions, spaces for bicycles, free Wi-Fi throughout the boat, heated decks and more. “The greatest city in the world deserves the greatest ferry system in the world,” de Blasio said. “When we launch Citywide Ferry next summer we will be connecting New Yorkers in transit-starved neighborhoods with good jobs and opportunities all over the city.” The price of a ride on the ferry service will be set to the price

of a MetroCard, with a launching price of $2.75 per trip. The East River Ferry will also be fully integrated into Citywide Ferry, which will bring the cost of that service down from $4 to $2.75. New Yorkers can also take a two-minute survey about Citywide Ferry through www.citywideferry.nyc and will be automatically entered to win one of five annual Citywide Ferry passes once service begins. Winners of the annual passes will be announced as the ferry services gets

closer to launch with one entry per person. “We’re excited to give New Yorkers a sneak peek at the brand new, state-of-the-art boats that will soon be connecting 21 landings around the five boroughs,” said Maria Torres-Springer, president of the NYC Economic Development Corporation. “Citywide Ferry Service is going to be a game changer, helping millions of New Yorkers access quality jobs and recreation along our city’s waterfront.” ANGY ALTAMIRANO

NYPD seeks suspect in Queens attempted rape Authorities are searching for a man suspected of an attempted rape on a Queens street last month. Around 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, a 33-year-old woman was grabbed by her throat on the street near the corner 42nd Avenue and Warren Street in Corona, according to police. The man who grabbed her demanded to go to her apartment. The victim fought back, and the suspect punched her in the mouth and stomach several times, authorities added. He then threw the woman to the ground and sexually as-

saulted her. When the woman yelled for help, the suspect fled eastbound on 42nd Avenue, police added. The suspect was described as a Hispanic man, between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-7, who was last seen wearing a checkered shirt and dark colored pants. The corrections officers union had argued the searches violated constitutional rights. A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit by New York City’s correction officers union to end a city policy allowing guards to be strip-searched and disciplined when drugsniffing dogs detect narcotics on them. U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan said the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association lacked standing to bring claims over the “canine sniffs,” including that the searches violated the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. She said this was because no member could demonstrate an “actual or imminent” risk, as opposed to a “conjectural or hypothetical” risk, that the sniffs would uncover illegal drugs,

One of the men sprayed an unknown liquid through the glass partition and threw batteries wrapped with tape at the glass, according to authorities. NYPD: Teen punched, kicked inside subway station in Brooklyn Police are searching for a teen they say attacked another girl at a Brooklyn subway station over what appeared to be nothing. On June 12 at about 11 p.m. the suspect — described to be between 15 and 17 years old — began a verbal dispute with the 16-year-old victim inside the Jay Street-MetroTech subway station, according to authorities. The suspect then punched and kicked the victim in the face, head and body, police said. The victim sustained scratches and bruising on her face and arms but refused medical attention at the scene. According to police, it did not seem that the two girls knew each other prior to the assault. The suspect is de-

scribed to be 5 feet 7 inches tall and 140 pounds. She was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a multicolored shirt. Vullo will succeed former NYDFS Superintendent Benjamin Lawsky, who left the agency last year. Under Lawsky, NYDFS earned a reputation as an aggressive regulatory body that extracted hefty fines from global banks and other financial institutions. The regulator, created in 2011 by consolidating the state’s banking and insurance agencies, had been in flux since before Vullo’s arrival in March. REUTERS

The blaze, which ignited on Wednesday in a wilderness area northwest of Santa Barbara, has consumed chaparral and tall grass in the Los Padres National Forest, blackening some 1,200

About 500 firefighters were trying to hold it from exploding out of control as airplane tankers and helicopters dropped water, officials said. “There isn’t a lot of marine layer [ocean humidity], so not great conditions for firefighting,” Diane Black, a joint incident command manager, said in a phone interview. Obama meets massacre survivors, assails homegrown terrorism Sunday’s attack ranks as the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. President Barack Obama on Thursday met survivors of a massacre at a gay nightclub and relatives of the 49 people killed and said the United States must act to control gun violence and fight what he called homegrown terrorism. “The last two terrorist attacks on our soil — Orlando and San Bernardino — were homegrown,” Obama told reporters. “We’re going to have to do more to prevent these kinds of events from occurring. It’s going to take more than just our military. It’s going to take more than just our intelligence community.” Obama and Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Orlando, Florida, four

days after a U.S.-born gunman claiming allegiance to various Islamist militant groups carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history. The United States has made it too easy for disturbed or wrathful people to legally acquire high-powered weapons like the assault rifle used in the attack Sunday, Obama said. “I held and hugged” grieving family members before laying flowers at a memorial for the victims of the attack on the Pulse nightclub, he said. Police killed the gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, a U.S. citizen born in New York to Afghan immigrants. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack but U.S. officials have said they do not believe Mateen was assisted from abroad. CIA Director John Brennan

BRIEF British lawmaker shot dead, EU referendum campaigns suspended A British member of parliament was shot dead in the street Thursday, causing deep shock across Britain and the suspension of campaigning for next week’s referendum on the country’s EU membership. Jo Cox, 41, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour Party and a vocal advocate for Britain remaining in the European Union, was attacked while preparing to meet constituents in Birstall near Leeds in northern England. Media reports said she had been shot and stabbed. West Yorkshire regional police said a 52-year-old man was arrested by officers nearby and weapons including a firearm recovered. “We are not in a position to discuss any motive at this time,” said Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins. One witness said a man pulled an old or makeshift gun from a bag and fired twice. “I saw a lady on the floor like on the beach with her arms straight and her knees up and blood all over the face,” Hichem Ben-Abdallah told reporters. “She wasn’t making any noise, but clearly she was in agony.” REUTERS

something. What put them over the edge? Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it was Trump’s wholly unexpected, inexplicable and racially charged attack on an American judge. Perhaps it was his furious assault on the media, or his calamitous relations with members of his own party, or his overall combative response to almost any challenge. Or maybe … just maybe … the novelty has worn off. Maybe under a barrage of criticism by Democrats and Republicans alike, more voters are beginning to look beyond Trump’s made-for-TV bombast and they don’t like what they see. To be sure, the polls say the voters still do not think much of Hillary Clinton either, putting her unfavorable rating at 55 percent. So I stand by my assessment: She can still find a way to lose this election. But not if Trump hands her the win. And right now, he appears to be doing just that.

Health agency reports US babies with Zika-related birth defects

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are seen in a lab. GETTY IMAGES

Three babies have been born in the United States with birth defects linked to likely Zika virus infections in the mothers during pregnancy, along with three cases of lost pregnancies linked to Zika, federal health officials said on Thursday. The six cases reported as of June 9 were included in a new U.S. Zika pregnancy registry created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said it will begin regular reporting of poor outcomes of pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Zika has caused alarm throughout the Americas since numerous cases of the birth defect microcephaly linked to the

mosquito-borne virus were reported in Brazil, the country hardest hit by the current outbreak. The rare birth defect is marked by unusually small head size and potentially severe developmental problems. The U.S. cases so far involve women who contracted the virus outside the United States in areas with active Zika outbreaks, or were infected through unprotected sex with an infected partner. There have not yet been any cases reported of local transmission of the virus in the United States. Health experts expect local transmission to occur as mosquito season gets underway with warmer weather, especially in Gulf Coast states such as Florida and Texas. REUTERS

BRIEF Wall Street Journal: Clinton considering Sen. Warren for running mate Hillary Clinton is considering Sen. Elizabeth Warren for her running mate for the Democratic presidential ticket, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing several people familiar with the process. Warren, a leading progressive voice among Democrats, is among those Democratic presidential candidate Clinton is vetting for the vice presidential position, the newspaper reported. Clinton’s rival Bernie Sanders is not, it added. Sources told Reuters earlier

this month that Warren, who represents Massachusetts, is considering the potential role. Representatives for Clinton, Sanders and Warren did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the report. Clinton is the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential election, having won the last primary contest this week in the District of Columbia. Although Clinton and Sanders met this week, the senator from Vermont does not plan to end his campaign or endorse Clinton. REUTERS

BRIEF McCain says he ‘misspoke’ in blaming Obama for attacks on Americans Sen. John McCain said on Thursday that President Barack Obama was “directly responsible” for attacks on Americans like the one in Florida because of policies that contributed to the rise of the Islamic State. But the Arizona Republican later said he misspoke. McCain, who is in a tough re-election race, made the

comments after reporters chased him down a marble stairway and into a hallway of the U.S. Capitol. They asked what he was hearing from constituents about gun control issues being debated in the Senate after Sunday’s shooting rampage by a gunman who claimed allegiance to Islamic State militants. “I’m hearing a lot from my constituents about what happened and of course I am making them realize that Barack

Obama is directly responsible for it,” McCain said. “Because when he pulled everybody out of Iraq, al Qaeda went to Syria, became ISIS, and ISIS is what it is today thanks to Barack Obama’s failures, utter failures,” McCain said. “So the responsibility for it lies with President Barack Obama and his failed policies.” After media reports began to appear about his comments, McCain, who lost the White

House to Obama in the 2008 presidential election, posted a clarification on Twitter and then issued a statement that said he meant to blame Obama’s policies, not the president personally. “I misspoke. I did not mean to imply that the president was personally responsible. I was referring to President Obama’s national security decisions, not the president himself,” McCain said in the statement. A funny story But parental advice doesn’t always work out. Hart remembers a time he watched his dad lose a fight while trying to teach an important lesson. “My dad said, ‘You don’t let nobody push you around. You handle yourself at all times, be a man,’” Hart says, chuckling. “And he got into it with this guy. Me and my brother were in the car. This guy hit my dad with two of the hardest punches I’ve ever seen in my life. It was so fast: pat-pat! The guy even said something like, ‘I didn’t want to do this in front of your kids!’ My dad got back into the car, closed the door and started driving. It was just quiet. We were like, ‘Guess he’s not going to say something about it. Let’s just act like he won in a couple days.’ “The lesson I learned here was to duck,” Hart adds.

With “Central Intelligence,” the question of high school is bound to come up. In the actioncomedy, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson play former high schoolers who reunite 20 years after graduation. Hart’s Calvin was the most popular kid in school; he wound up a bored office drone. Johnson’s Bob, meanwhile, was a bullied kid who turned into a muscled

super-spy. Hart’s story about the good old days is nice; Johnson’s is not. “I was a popular kid. You guys can tell I was a really cool guy,” Hart says. “I wasn’t the best student, but I was a people person. I was the one who got along with any and everybody. There was no segregation, from the athletes to the non-athletes, to the people into education to the people who played hooky. To get embraced by everybody was a good feeling. It kept me out of fights. The funny guy stops the fights and makes people want to laugh about it. Everyone walks away saying, ‘Kevin is right.’” Johnson’s stories aren’t

so rosy. He was a troubled youth, arrested multiple times before he was 16. “I spent a lot of time trying to get back on the right track,” Johnson says. “It wasn’t until I got involved with sports and athletics that I had a focus.” It’s not unusual to talk about deeper stuff when talking “Central Intelligence,” which is on one hand a silly blockbuster. On the other it deals with things like fear of failure, fear of aging, even bullying. “I believe in the whole anti-bullying thing,” Hart says, adding, “As a kid I think you need a bit of drama. I don’t like the people who are trying to make these kids’ lives

perfect. You have to go through something. You need to build character. Within situations that make you feel uncomfortable come life lessons. “I have two kids myself. I’m hoping my son gets into some stuff at a young age and comes to me. Then I’ll say, ‘Hey, man, figure it out!’” Hart continues. “You’ve got to figure it out when you’re on your own. You don’t want the kid to be 18 and he’s approached with his first fight and he’s like, ‘Dad! She hit me in the back of the head!’ I don’t want to shelter my kids. You can’t stop these things from happening. You can communicate. Just make sure

people understand their s e l f worth a n d their value.”

Orange is new and back If spoilers and trailers have taught us anything, it’s that something intensely bad is brewing at Litchfield Penitentiary as Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” enters Season 4 on Friday. “It gets more and more tense. Tensions are rising,” dishes star Taylor Schilling. “Things are getting worse.” Schilling plays Piper Chapman, a young woman jailed for smuggling drug money across the border. At the start of Season 4, we see Chapman — following a unionized revolt by fellow inmates she’s recruited/manipulated into a surprisingly lucrative underground used-panty-selling scheme — feeling the wrath of her betrayals, both physically and emotionally. While Schilling is well aware her character has earned a fair share of haters, she still feels that Piper is a sort of anti-hero. “There’s something

heroic in trying to be yourself. She’s trying that desperately,” explains Schilling. “She’s definitely trying to figure out who she is, so I think I appreciate her a real lot.” The 31-year-old Boston native says she’s definitely hoping her character makes her way out of prison someday, but offset, she’s more red-carpet-

ready than orange-jumpsuit material. “I just finished two films over the break. One is with the Duplass brothers, and another is a movie called ‘The Titan,’ with Sam Worthington and Tom Wilkinson,” she adds. “It’s a really exciting time.” And when she’s stuck in her own house (not the

big house), Schilling loves a good binge-watching session, just like her fans. Though she doesn’t watch a ton of TV, she loves fellow Netflix original “House of Cards,” and HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” — and of course: “I love ‘Bob’s Burgers’!” “Orange is the New Black” Season 4 premieres on Netflix this Friday. Ed O’Neill’s mimic octopus (with Ellen DeGeneres’ regal blue tang) is one of the newbies in the Pixar sequel “Finding Dory.” PIXAR

“Finding Dory” Director: Andrew Stanton Voices of: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks Rating: PG Like “Up,” “Finding Dory” gets the heavy stuff out of the way first. We see how young Dory — the regal blue tang with short-term memory loss and Ellen DeGeneres’ voice — got so absent-minded that she swam too far from home, losing track of her doting parents (Eugene Levy and, as it happens, Diane Keaton). That’s right: For five minutes you watch a baby fish — with eyes so big they practically absorb tears into them like two black holes — swim around

the ocean, asking everyone she sees if she knows where her parents are. Also like “Up,” this is a preamble — a way to provide a sturdy foundation of deep feeling for the zany wackiness to come. As an adult, after the events of 2003’s “Finding Nemo,” Dory suddenly remembers spare details of her past, just enough that she tries to find her parents. Soon Dory has ditched the vast expanses of the ocean for an oceanside institute that’s part rehabilitation center, part jab at SeaWorld. Pixar has been heroic with sequels, creating ones with a reason to exist beyond cash (see: “Toy Story” Nos. 2 and 3). But it’s also been as bad as everyone else, with others that have been inessential (“Monsters

University”) or outright demonic (“Cars 2”). “Dory” is in the first camp, deepening the world and its characters, finding a new and worthy angle, all while keeping the Pixar touch intact. As ever, comedy shares space with genuine feelings and hard truths. Still, sometimes “Dory” can come across like Dory herself: absent-minded, easily distracted, moving from one shiny thrill to the next. But just as Dory can recall her earliest memories, we can’t forget the brutal opening and know what’s at stake. This is an entry that’s never as shattering as Pixar’s best and most brutal. In fact, it’s almost subtle. But it’s the kind of film that dares you to undermine it, just so it can whack you upside the head and steal one more tear. MATT PRIGGE

Copa America gets wild at MetLife The surprise team of the tourney, Peru, will take on Colombia Friday. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

Just in the group stage alone, the 2016 Copa America has been both wildly entertaining and unpredictable. On Friday (8 p.m., Fox Sports 1), Peru (2-1-0) meets Colombia (2-0-1) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This particular matchup is surprising for a couple reasons. For one, Peru won

Group B and Colombia was the runner-up to the United States in Group A. Coming into the tournament, nobody would have picked Peru to finish with more points than Brazil and Ecuador. Likewise, after Colombia dominated the U.S., 2-0, in its opener, who could have imagined that the Americans would claw back to go in front of Colombia based on a better goal-differential (plus-3 over plus-2)? Peru’s 1-0 victory over Brazil on Sunday was the craziest result thus far. The game-winning goal by Peruvian striker Raul Ruidiaz came on a blatant handball after midfielder

Andy Polo had crossed the ball to him right near the Brazilian net. After a lengthy review, the referees first said it was no goal then they changed it back to a goal. It certainly didn’t help FIFA’s deserved reputation as the shadiest governing body (sorry, NCAA) in sports, although conspiracy theorists will have a hard time explaining how Peru would be chosen to beat Brazil. Regardless of how it occurred, it was one of the best wins in Peru’s mostly forgettable soccer history. The last time that Peru had beaten Brazil at the Copa America was in 1975 (when they won the

whole thing). Brazil had led the all-time series 299-3, and not getting out of the group stage at Copa America for the first time in 29 years cost manager Dunga his job on Tuesday. There is little question that Colombia will still be heavily favored in this match. They are one of the top teams in the world and the only reason that they didn’t win Group A is because they lost to Costa Rica (1-1-0) 3-2 on Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston. Costa Rica had barely a prayer in terms of advancing to the quarterfinals so it is a little strange that Colombia fell asleep against them.

Mets, Yankees can pad records this weekend Both New York teams have opportunities to slam weak opponents. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

The Mets and Yankees are still looking up at the leaders within their respective divisions, but they both have easy assignments this weekend that could help them get closer to the top of the standings. The Mets host the NL-worst Braves while the Yankees face the AL-worst Twins at Target Field. Matt Harvey (4-8, 4.66 ERA) has allowed just two earned runs in his last 20 innings of work. He’ll be looking to carry that momentum into Friday night’s divisional tilt with Atlanta. Harvey will have to keep the ball away from the Braves’ young

center fielder Mallex Smith; he tagged Harvey for a hit and a homer in a May 3 meeting, and is batting over .300 in the month of June. John Gant (0-1, 5.63 ERA) makes his second start of the year; he was thrown to the wolves last week when he started against the Chicago Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in that game before being yanked in the fifth inning. Gant, who was drafted by the Mets in 21st round in 2011, has yet to face his former team. Steven Matz (7-3, 2.71 ERA) will try to bounce back from two straight losing outings on Saturday night. Matz has been outstanding against the Braves in three career starts (3-0, 1.42 ERA). Aaron Blair (0-4, 7.59 ERA), who was hit hard in his season debut against the Mets earlier this year

(three runs on six hits and two walks with just one strikeout in 5.1 IP), responds for Atlanta. Asdrubal Cabrera and Curtis Granderson each reached base twice against Blair that day. Jacob deGrom (3-2, 2.80 ERA) seeks his first win since April 30 in Sunday’s finale, and while his strikeout numbers have gone up (33 in his last four games), so have his walks (eight) and runs allowed (eight).

Yankees – Twins Friday night will see Masahiro Tanaka (3-2, 3.08 ERA) attempt to rebound from a shaky start against the Tigers on June 11, in which he allowed two homers and five total runs in 6.1 frames. Tanaka is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in two career starts against Minnesota. Pat Dean (1-2, 4.17 ERA) counters for the

Twins. The southpaw’s first season in the big leagues has been nothing to write home about, but he is holding batters to a respectable .236 average at home. The Yankees are 8-13 in games started by a lefty this season. Michael Pineda (3-7, 5.88 ERA) had a horrid 7.52 ERA in May but has begun June with two straight quality starts. He’ll have to watch out

for Brian Dozier in Saturday’s contest, as he’s been swinging a hot bat this month (.321 average) after a slow start. Ricky Nolasco (3-4, 5.12 ERA) will be pitted against Pineda. Among the Bombers with longtime success against Nolasco are Brian McCann (.339 average, eight homers in 62 ABs) and Carlos Beltran (.333 average in 48 ABs).

Nathan Eovaldi (6-2, 4.42 ERA) and Ervin Santana (1-6, 4.77 ERA) square off in the finale. Eovaldi has been awful so far in June (9.82 ERA), but has been successful against the Twins in the past (2-0, 3.00 ERA in two starts). Santana has lost five straight decisions, giving up five earned runs in each of his last three outings.
