SENATE VOTES DOWN PROPOSAL TO EXPAND FBI SURVEILLANCE POWERS
1
The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted down a Republican-backed proposal to expand the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s secretive surveillance powers after the mass shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub last week. The legislation would have broadened the type of telephone and internet records the FBI could request from companies like Alphabet Inc. and Verizon without a warrant to include email metadata and some internet browsing activity.

MICHIGAN AG SUES TWO COMPANIES IN FLINT WATER CRISIS
2
The Michigan attorney general said on Wednesday his office has sued two engineering services companies for “botching” their roles in the city of Flint’s drinking water crisis that exposed residents to dangerously high lead levels. Attorney General Bill Schuette said at a news conference in Flint that the civil lawsuit was filed in Genesee County Circuit Court against Veolia Environnement SA and Houston-based Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam. The lawsuit charged Veolia with professional negligence and fraud that caused Flint’s the lead poisoning to continue and worsen, and LAN with professional negligence. Schuette said the state is seeking damages from the companies that could total hundreds of millions of dollars. His office said additional claims against the firms or others may be filed in the future. REUTERS

Uber, Lyft, taxi drivers to settle things in the ring Celebrity Boxing will settle the rivalries roiling the cab world in the boxing ring. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
Three drivers representing Uber and Lyft and one traditional cab driver are headed to a Philly boxing ring this summer to settle their differences with their fists. “Battle of the Drivers,” announced Wednesday by Celebrity Boxing promoter Damon Feldman, will feature two main fights: an Uber driver versus a Lyft driver, and an undercard match between an Uber driver and a regular cabbie. And the trash talk has already begun. “Uber is everywhere, we ain’t going nowhere. Whether you Lyft, cabs, we don’t care,” said George Robertson Storm, an Uber driver with an average rating of 4.71 stars during the fight announcement at the office of co-organizer and attorney Jason Fine. “Uber is here to stay. Y’all can say you gonna take us out, it’s never gonna happen. There’s too many of us out here. We out here to stay and we helping a lot of people too. It’s free enterprise, free world, free country.” Storm, 37, who has been driving for Uber since March 2015, will face off against a Lyft driver with whom he got into a physical altercation over a fare three months ago in Center City. The two faced each other but kept it professional during the announcement on Wednesday. Lyft driver Dan “Danny Mac” MacMinn, 39, said he was summoned to pick up a young woman, but

saw Storm pick her up instead. MacMinn said he reached into the Uber driver’s window to push Storm, which led to a shoving match on the street between the two as a crowd watched, before Storm drove off with the woman. “Everybody’s pretty cool with Uber. Sometimes cabbies shout out their window at you, but with Lyft, I thought we was on the same team,” Storm said of the squabble. “I was upset, and I do want to fight him.” Storm said the woman at the center of the fracas was unperturbed and he safely delivered her to her destination a short time later. “Still a five-star ride,” he said.
“It’s definitely not over. I’m gonna step in the ring with the man that I got in the tussle with on the street and we’re gonna see who’s the better driver out there,” said MacMinn, a southpaw from Prospect Park who said he has been a street fighter all his life. Meanwhile, the undercard match may go toward settling city cabbies’ long-standing beef with Uber, which has been demonstrated in numerous protests around the city. “I’ve been ready to beat some ass for a while now. I’m representing 20,000 to 30,000 Philadelphia cab drivers right now, and you’re about to realize, all of that anger that they have, I’m carrying it on my shoulders,” cabbie Mike Davis, 32, a driver for five years from West Oak Lane said heatedly, pointing his finger at the Uber driver he’s set to fight. “We have to stand up and unite against what’s going on. There’s no business coming in. Uber’s sucking it all up.” His opponent, Uber driver Johnson Jeannot, 33, said regular cabs are a
dying institution. “I don’t give a damn about you losing your job or you not having enough rides. If you were doing your job, you wouldn’t be having no Uber or Lyft,” Jeannot responded to Davis. Uber and Lyft are both technically still illegal in Philadelphia, although a regulatory compromise hammered out recently in Harrisburg, if passed into law, would legalize them under the supervision of the Philadelphia Parking Authority. The match is being promoted by World Xtreme Entertainment. Feldman and Fine said the boxers will vie for cash prizes and pride. Feldman has organized Celebrity Boxing matches involving people like “Tan Mom” Patricia Krentcil, “Milf Mom” Angela Cottone, Jose Canseco, Tanya Harding and Rodney King. But his reputation buckled in recent years as public outcry led to the cancelation of a planned fight between rapper DMX and George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin.

DRPA announces 9/11 memorial for Philly The DRPA approved construction of a memorial near the Ben Franklin Bridge Wednesday. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
The Delaware River Port Authority board approved Wednesday plans to erect a memorial commemorating the 9/11 terror attacks. The memorial will be built on a triangular DRPA-owned plot of land at Fifth and Race streets, adjacent to the National Constitution Center and the entrance to the Ben Franklin Bridge. The DRPA said in its board meeting Wednesday morning that planners for the memorial hope to complete

construction by Sept. 11 this year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Proposed renderings show two towers, each 9 feet 11 inches tall, with a replica of the Liberty Bell hanging between them. Artifacts from the attack sites will be prominently
featured: steel from the World Trade Center, a block of limestone granite from the Pentagon and soil from the crash site of Flight 93. All labor, materials and work have been donated by volunteers, the DRPA board said. There would be no
cost to the agency except for the land and maintenance, which DRPA already does. “Kudos goes out to whoever started this and whoever had to put the time in to get the materials and so forth,” Commissioner E. Frank DiAntonio said.
DNC PREP Philadelphia set to open abandoned prison for DNC With thousands of protesters planning to descend on Philadelphia next month during the Democratic National Convention, the city is readying itself for the possibility of prisoner overflow. The city’s now-defunct Holmesburg Prison will be reopening during the DNC, July 25-28, to hold arrested protesters if necessary, the Inquirer reported. “If we had to activate Holmesburg, that would be out of necessity for a mass-arrest kind of processing situation,” said Shawn Hawes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Prisons. “We’re always ready to open whenever necessary, so, like the city, we’re hoping for the best, preparing just in case.” Hawes added that if Holmesburg was reactivated, arrested protesters would be held in the prison’s recently renovated gymnasium, not the cell blocks. Processing a person typically takes from eight to 24 hours before they can post bail or are transferred to another facility. The gym has 100 beds, showers and air-conditioning,
Hawes said. Philly has issued 13 demonstration permits so far, and the city expects more than 50,000 people to attend protests alone, but the city said it doesn’t plan to crack down on protesters demonstrating without permits. Still, Bernie Sanders supporters practiced getting arrested last weekend ahead of convention concerns. Built in 1895, Holmesburg is notorious for a violent past that has included shootings, stabbings, beatings, rapes, riots and decades of human experimentation. Renowned dermatologist Albert Kligman’s experiments on inmates eventually became a catalyst for federal restrictions on human testing, the New York Times reported at Kligman’s death in 2010. For nearly two decades, Kligman conducted research on behalf of pharmaceutical companies and government agencies. Prisoners were directly exposed to pathogens like the herpes virus and the athlete’s foot fungus. When it closed in 1995, the city transitioned to the nearby Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. ‘Live at the Dump’ turns trash into art Organizers: Performances amid construction, demolition waste immerses audience in sustainability. A.D. AMOROSI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Where some see trash, others see art. When the Northeast Philadelphia recycling center Revolution Recovery and the nonprofit Recycled Artist in Residency (RAIR) program opened its gates June 12 for the debut of “Live at the Dump,” their goal was to offer a unique perspective on the creative process for artist and audience alike. RAIR’s co-founder and director Billy Dufala and debut “Dump” performer Martha McDonald fashioned a new live venue from rubble, refuse and stone. The pair’s performanc-

performance artist Martha McDonald of the mix of construction material and demolition trash — the personal flotsam of one’s life with memories
attached. “There is humor and pathos there, which is pretty much what it’s like at the dump,” said McDonald. Dufala said their mission was to create awareness about sustainability through art and design. “We do this by putting artists in the middle of a waste stream that most people outside of the trash industry will never see. We make it visible in alternative ways; make people confront it with
a different perspective, from both outside and inside the industry,” he said. Lucia Thome, RAIR’s director of special projects, says the central reason they make art at and from Revolution Recovery and bring audiences to see it is to discover where their trash goes and how it is recycled, literally and figuratively. “Most people have never been to a recycling center or dump,” says Thome. “No finger wagging or preaching about how we
could or should be less wasteful.” Thome and Dufala have been working with Revolution Recovery since 2010, introducing other artists to the sites and permitting them to create work built from scratch and trash. A 2015 grant from Pew Center for Arts & Heritage helped RAIR figure out new ways of bringing audiences to the site. Having McDonald — a legendary site-specific artist — perform her “Songs of Memory and Forgetting” in the trash heap made for a stunning, apt display of artist and setting. She strolled through trash she collected for the sake of poignancy and led the audience of about 200 through the cement yard, singing and activating objects with the audience behind her, moving through the trash-lined space, Dufala and Thome worked the heavy equipment — tractors, cranes — choreographed like dancers.

To date, 23 cases of travel-associated Zika virus have been confirmed in Pennsylvania; there have been no instances of the virus being contracted locally, officials said. The Chester County Health Department announced a collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in response to the case. All county health care providers have been issued alerts and information regarding reducing the risk of Zika’s spread. Chester County Health Department Director Jeanne Casnor said there’s minimal risk of contracting Zika from mosquitoes in Chester County. “For anyone traveling to countries affected by the Zika virus, we urge caution and note that pregnant women in particular should avoid travel to affected countries,” Casner said in a statement.

Pa. state House passes 20-week abortion ban A politically charged bill that seeks to restrict abortions in Pennsylvania after 20 weeks, or five months, passed through the House on Tuesday, and now heads to the Senate for approval. House Bill 1948, introduced by Rep. Kathy Rapp, R-Warren, would overturn the current state ban on abortions after 24 weeks, or six months. It also would criminalize dilation and evacuation abortions (D&E), a second-trimester procedure recommended for women with fetuses with severe medical issues if the mother faces life-threatening complications; it’s performed by dilating the uterus and removing the fetus in parts. After nearly two hours of floor debate, the measure passed 132-65. All but four Philadelphia County legislators — Republican Reps. John Taylor, Martina A. White, Thomas P. Murt and Democratic Rep. Stephen Kinsey — opposed the
controversial bill. In Tuesday’s heated debate, Rep. Jordan Harris, D-Philadelphia, said making the decision is hard enough already for women and families without “government putting our nose … in women’s uteruses.” But supporters say this bill is a necessary step to preventing fetuses from feeling pain during abortion procedures. Congress, meanwhile, is considering a national 20-week ban, according to Planned Parenthood. The nonprofit organization says these bans are part of an agenda to “chip away at abortion access,” targeting abortions by pregnancy term or method, like D&E. “We must end the inhumane practice of dismemberment abortion,” said Rapp, referring to D&E. Rapp has previously sponsored House Bill 1077, which mandated a preabortion ultrasound test. Gov. Tom Wolf has said he will veto the bill
“We must end the inhumane practice of dismemberment abortion.” Rapp
States with bans at 20 weeks If approved, Pennsylvania would join 14 states with 20-week abortion bans: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. But Pennsylvania would be the first in the Northeast to adopt such a measure.
even if the Senate OKs the measure. “This legislation would be a step back for women,” Wolf said at a news conference in April. “This legislation would be a huge step back for Pennsylvania. If this legislation reaches my desk, I will veto it.” Currently, women in Pennsylvania must receive state-directed counseling and require a 24-hour waiting period before the procedure is performed, according to the Guttmacher Institute. For public employees, insurance policies only cover abortion in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest. ALEXIS SACHDEV

Nearly half of gay and lesbian couples living together in the United States are married a year after the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize samesex marriage across the country, according to a Gallup study released on Wednesday. The percentage of married cohabiting same-sex couples, as opposed to couples living together but not married, rose to 49 percent from 38 percent before the ruling, Gallup said. In a ruling on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court struck down same-sex marriage bans
in the 13 states that still prohibited it. Gallup estimates about 123,000 same-sex American couples married in the past year, with a higher number of the unions taking place in states that already had legalized same-sex marriages. In total, 9.6 percent of gay and lesbians Americans are married, compared to 7.9 percent before the ruling, Gallup said. The percentage of same-sex couples living in a domestic partnership has declined to 10.1 percent from 12.8 percent, it said. “This indicates that while many unmarried same-sex couples who were living together got married in the past year, many others stopped

The U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday that federal law enforcement officials have hit a milestone in 2016 by completing the “largest takedown ever against defendants allegedly trying to defraud Medicare and other federal insurance programs. The 2016 takedown involves 301 defendants and a loss amount of $900 million, the department said. That exceeds a record last year, when 243 defendants faced charges in a combined $712 million in losses. Among the defendants charged in the takedown include two owners of a group of outpatient clinics and a patient recruiter who stand accused of filing $36 million in fraudulent claims for physical therapy and

Several dozen House Democrats pushing for action on gun control protested on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, chanting “no bill, no break! and demanding that the chamber put off an upcoming recess until legislation is debated. The Democrats stood or sat at the front of the chamber, where such disruptive tactics are relatively rare. When the presiding House officer, Republican Rep. Ted Poe, entered the chamber, he declared the House not

in order. After banging the gavel several times in an attempt to clear the protesters, he announced the chamber would be in recess and left. The Democrats remained on the House floor, calling for action before a vacation recess scheduled to start at the end of the week and run through July 5. Shortly before that, As-
sistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, likened the push for gun control action to the civil rights movement of the 1960s when sit-ins and other civil disobedience prodded Washington to act on new protections for AfricanAmericans. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tweeted her support for the sit-in, saying, “This
is what real leadership looks like. House Democrats frustrated by inaction on guns have staged several actions on the House floor in recent days. They have interrupted a moment of silence in honor of the Orlando victims and unsuccessfully seeking recognition to bring up bills on expanding background checks and preventing people on “no-fly and other surveillance lists from buying guns. Democrats in the Senate last week took control of that chamber for nearly 15 straight hours as they called for gun control legislation. House Republicans have declined to advance gun control legislation and House Speaker Paul Ryan said earlier on Wednesday he was “waiting to see what the Senate does before discussing the topic. Dreaming of a trip to Mars? You’ll have to wait at least 15 years for the technology to be developed, the head of the European Space Agency said, putting doubt on claims that the journey could happen sooner. “If there was enough money then we could possibly do it earlier, but there is not as much now as the Apollo program had, ESA DirectorGeneral Jan Woerner said, referring to the U.S. project which landed the first people on the moon. Woerner says a permanent human settlement on the moon, where 3-D printers could be used to turn moon rock into essential items needed for the two-year trip to Mars, would be a

major step toward the red planet. NASA hopes to send astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s and businessman Elon Musk, head of electric car maker Tesla Motors, says he plans to put unmanned spacecraft on Mars from as early as 2018 and have humans there by 2030. The ESA’s Woerner said it would take longer.
A spacecraft sent to Mars would need rockets and fuel powerful enough to lift back off for the return trip and the humans would need protection from unprecedented physical and mental challenges as well as deep-space radiation. Woerner would like to see a cluster of research laboratories on the moon, at what he calls a “moon village, to replace the International Space Station when its lifetime ends and to test technologies needed to make the trip to Mars. That could be funded and operated by a collection of private and public bodies from around the world, he said in an interview at the ESA’s Operations Center. REUTERS

Blake Lively stands by her ‘Oakland booty’ comment Blake Lively finally responded to the heat she received last month after the actress posted a photo of herself on Instagram in a sleek gold gown with the caption, “L.A. face with an Oakland booty,” a line from Sir-Mix-Alot’s hit song “Baby Got Back.” One Instagrammer raged: “Another day, another rich white woman using women of color’s bodies as a punch line and commodity — yet everyone defends her and calls it confidence. But hey who the f*ck am I to check her privilege! #WhiteGirlsDoItBest” But the responses weren’t all vilifying, including one from Sir-Mix-Alot himself. I’m moving to a new apartment. I hate moving; you probably do, too. I’m starting to snarl at packing tape in the grocery store, and my hands are covered in paper cuts from cardboard boxes. It’s all I’m talking about this week. (I’m lots of fun at parties.) When I told someone about the 78 boxes I packed yesterday, they seemed stunned. “What the heck could you possibly have in there?” Well, a lot of them are full of toys and collectibles. Now, before you laugh or groan about the spouse you have who could have said the same thing, let me defend collecting. My collection is geek stuff. There are DC Bombshells, space helmets, Joker statues and a Rocket Raccoon mask that talks. There are endless Pop Vinyl figures, a gold coin from a pirate show set visit and numerous sonic screwdrivers (though you need an actual screwdriver to change the batteries). That’s just to name a few things. It’s not all expensive stuff, and there is really no theme. It’s just stuff I love. Between my boyfriend’s geek collection and mine, it’s like a

“HEATHERS”
Robert De Niro in “Cape Fear” UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Don’t judge people with too many Daenerys toys. FUNKO
comic book shop in here. As we approach yet another convention, I can guarantee I’ll be adding to it. Maybe just one little piece, but there is something lovely about the joy of finding that one special item that makes your desk look just a bit more like Disneyland. Sure, some people can take collecting too far, but for those of us who love it, the search is as much fun as having the item at home. There are all kinds of theories about why we collect things. Some people say it’s the thrill of the hunt. Some claim that seeing the Samurai Darth Vader made out
of motorcycle parts on your desk calms anxiety. (That is a thing. I’m looking at it right now.) Some say the items remind you of fond memories of a film or a friend. Others just love to decorate their homes in a way that might horrify their parents and make it a haven of things they adore. So, if your significant other or roomie comes home with yet another Daenerys statue, before you flip out and ask why they needed a ninth one, stop for a second. Ask them why they do it. Ask why they love it. Then get out there and maybe start your own collection. Happy hunting!

Winona Ryder and Christian Slater made a fine, sarcastic team in 1988’s “Heathers.” PROVIDED
Remember high school movies? They’re thin on the ground these days, meaning the kids might have to reach back to older teen films whose stars are now pushing 50. The ones made by John Hughes are weirdly undying. But far more respectable than “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club” is the one dropped into that nice and peppy era. “Heathers,” with Winona Ryder and Christian
Slater offing demonic popular girls and dumb jocks, was both a bomb, in that it tanked at the box office, and a ticking time bomb, in that it eventually destroyed an entire genre. Once it bloomed on home video, it created a generation of smart alecks, quick to deploy sarcasm and make jokes about cow-tipping. Yes, it birthed the likes of “Mean Girls,” but it’s always better to go back to the source.
The story goes that Martin Scorsese got to make “Goodfellas” only if he agreed to do a splashy remake of this classic 1962 Robert Mitchum-Gregory Peck thriller. Time has proved “Goodfellas” the real classic. But 25 years later we can see his “one for them” entry was no soulless sellout piece. It’s a for-hire work where the filmmaker really brought it. “Cape Fear” features some of Scorsese’s most keyed-up and arresting set pieces, plus a sturdy foundation of anguish and guilt as Nick Nolte’s lawyer is taunted by the newly freed con (Robert De Niro) he wrongfully put in the slammer.
Tom Kitt on why economics is a good major for a composer The popular musical is being performed at the Kimmel Center this week. MARIALENA RAGO @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
What if you could see where your choices took you? That is the idea behind the hit musical “If/Thenâ€?, currently being performed at the Kimmel Center. The musical follows Elizabeth as she returns to New York City and is faced with choices that ultimately affect her life. We chat with Tony winning composer, Tom Kitt about what makes this show so special as well as some of his musical influences. What makes “If/Thenâ€? dierent from the other shows you have written in the past? First and foremost would be the basic conception of this — of the story telling. I have never written a show where we basically told two stories at once. With a character’s life split into two so theatrically, we had to figure out a language for that

magical realism. I read that you went to school for economics. How did you end up in musical theatre? There is a joke I make that if anyone asks me how they pursue a life in the arts, I just say major in economics. My father was an economist and had a very successful career working in antitrust. It was his suggestion and it was a really wonderful one. I really loved that major. I am glad I did it cause I think that seeds of “If/Then definitely started in college with that experience. But in my heart I always wanted to pursue music. That is what I was dreaming of at a very early age.

such a good team? Well, I think it’s a marriage. We can say anything to each other. We celebrate each other, but we also get into little arguments with one another. We know that at the end of the day there is great love and affection. There is nothing we can’t say. I really trust him with everything. What do you want Philly theatre-goers to gain from watching “If/Then? I hope audiences will feel empowered and will walk out of the theatre wanting to talk about the show. Montreal has two primary wine routes: Route des vins de Brome-Missisquoi with more than 20 vineyards, and the smaller Route des vins de l’Estrie comprising seven vineyards. Domaine des Cotes d’Ardoise was the first winery to open here in 1980 and a wonderful place to taste red wine made from hybrid Marechal Foch, De Chaunac and Chelois grapes while taking a stroll along the flowered paths and sculpture gardens. Follow bumpy dirt roads to find gourmet restaurants, more than 50 new and old wineries, and charming bed and breakfasts in Mexico’s premier wine region. Stop at new sustainable winery Clos de Tres Cantos followed by Adobe Guadalupe for a horseback ride through the vineyards.
North Carolina has historically been best known for producing tobacco, but many former tobacco farmers have turned to grapes. There are now more than 160 wineries in the state, mostly concentrated in the Yadkin Valley, 90 minutes northwest of Charlotte. Shelton Vineyards is the original and largest winery, while many smaller wineries shine with esoteric grape varietals. Jones von Drehle has an excellent Petit Manseng while JOLO makes an award-winning Chambourcin rosÊ. Red wine lovers will enjoy McRitchie’s Ring of Fire blend.

Then try the Rhone-style wines at Qupe; their elegantly spicy syrah is a favorite.
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia The 164 wineries in the vast Okanagan Valley plant everything from merlot and pinot gris to cabernet franc and Gewurztraminer. Several wineries, including Burrowing Owl and Quails’ Gate have guest rooms and farm-to-table restaurants on site. You’ll want to check out Nk’Mip Cellars, North America’s first Aboriginal-owned winery, as well as Platinum Bench Estate Winery, which doubles as an artisan breadmaker and sells local cheese and charcuterie for picnics.
Willamette Valley, Oregon Willamette Valley might be the most recognized region on this list. Pinot noir is the name of the game in this cool climate, which is often compared to Burgundy. While the grape is used predominantly to make red wine, Soter Vineyards also makes an excellent brut rosÊ in the traditional Champagne method.
Oregon is at the forefront of biodynamic farming; Bergstrom and Left Coast Cellars are great examples. Several wineries, including Adelsheim and Left Coast Cellars are making a less common but crisp and food-friendly pinot blanc, too.

Beauty comes in many forms throughout the year in Norway, where picturesque scenery beckons visitors to experience its lovely, vibrant coast and out-of-the-ordinary attractions.

The long-term Fjord City Project has rebuilt Oslo’s waterfront and skyline, and made a world-renowned, design-forward neighborhood out of Thief Island (so named for being a prison islet centuries ago). One of Norway’s — and the world’s — most breathtaking cliffs is the North Cape, or Nordkapp, which marks the northernmost point of continental Europe. Join a tour from the port city of Honningsvag for the half-hour ride to the cape, where you can explore a subterranean exhibition, grab lunch and of course, snap your photo with the iconic Globe monument.

The far northern city of Kirkenes, a few miles from the Russian border, is home to the Snowhotel. Guests can book rooms in climate-controlled cabins all year — or in chillier months, spend the night in a cold room, sculpted from snow and ice. Either way, don’t miss an afternoon exploring the fjords (iced over in winter) followed by fireside dining in a rustic cabin.

Reasons why NBA draft day will be a holiday for Sixers fans in Philly
The Sixers hope they begin a new era of competitiveness Thursday night. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
Thursday is the day “the Process transitions into real expectations. It’s harder to get lower into the depths of losing and despair than the last three years for Sixers fans. But when they announce they’ve selected Ben Simmons No. 1 overall at approximately 7:35 Thursday night, the team will be, finally, shifting its focus. It’s time to win. It’s reason for Sixers fans to celebrate, and all across the city Thursday night fans will be watching and looking to the future. Here are five reasons why the 2016 NBA Draft will be can’t-miss for Philly sports fans.
1Ben Simmons Simmons is nearly the prototypical player that GMs are looking for in today’s NBA. Everyone wants a big, long, athletic point-forward like Draymond Green or LeBron James. And though his jump shot needs work and there is no guarantee he’ll thrive in the NBA, Simmons is one of the most impressive prospects in recent memory. Philly will add Simmons to a roster filled with potential and assets, with big men, draft picks and cash to sign free agents. Just watch him drive the lane, find ways to score and dish the ball with no-look passes. The next era of success in the Wells Fargo Center won’t be far off.

The NBA draft has become a fashion show for young men wearing tailored suits. Whether there’s a bright pinstripe three-piece, a jacket with a logo sewn inside or an unusual fabric or pattern, the draft is the first opportunity for most prospects on hand to be introduced to NBA fans and make a statement about their personality and taste.

NBA mock draft | by Matt Burke No. 1
No. 6
No. 9
No. 12
No. 15
76ers: Ben Simmons, SF
Pelicans: Kris Dunn, PG
Raptors: Skal Labissiere, PF
Jazz: Deyonta Davis, PF
Simmons and the Sixers ruined everyone’s fun on Tuesday when it became a lock that he’s going No. 1. So much for drama, but the Sixers certainly don’t need any more of that.
The Pelicans are still searching for that second star to place next to big man Anthony Davis. Dunn has been vocal about where he doesn’t want to play (Boston and Phoenix) but he seems as though he may have a liking for the Big Easy.
Legendary college coach John Calipari is hyping him up, but that’s what John Calipari does with former Kentucky guys. Labissiere was highly unimpressive in his one season with the Wildcats, but he’s certainly not done growing as a player.
Davis looked limited at Michigan State as he rarely left the paint but he’s shown he can step back and hit outside jumpers during workouts. The Jazz are guard-heavy so expect them to go with size when they make their firstround selection.
No. 2

No. 7
No. 10
Lakers: Brandon Ingram, SF
Suns: Dragan Bender, PF
Nuggets: Buddy Hield, SG
Bucks: Henry Ellenson, PF
The same boredom happened with the Lakers and Ingram at No. 2. Ingram remains the clear-cut second best player in this draft. If the Lakers are patient and don’t trade this pick, there’s a very good chance Ingram will be the cornerstone player in L.A.
Everyone’s screaming that Bender is the next Kristaps Porzingis simply because Porzingis is the last international lottery pick that we saw. No one has a clue on whether or not European players will work out.
The sharp-shooting Hield would fit in nicely with Danilo Gallinari, Emmanuel Mudiay and Kenneth Faried. Hield is the type of player who should be able to contribute right away and the Nuggets could potentially land in the postseason next year.
Marquette star Henry Ellenson is compared to Brian Scalabrine and Brian Cardinal (two white guys) on NBADraft.net. This is because Ellenson is also white and looks like a Scalabrine/Cardinal love child.
No. 5
No. 3
Celtics: Jaylen Brown, SF
T-Wolves: Jamal Murray, SG
Expect the Celtics to make people raise their eyebrows here, either with a trade or by taking someone not named Dragan Bender, Kris Dunn or Buddy Hield. Brown could be the second-coming of Paul Pierce in Boston.
Great shooters are in vogue right now thanks to the Splash Bros. at Golden State, but getting two guys who can shoot like that on the same team is rare. Minnesota could use a shooter so it might be a good fit.
PIER 40 SELF STORAGE, INC. 841 S Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19147, will be conducting a Public Sale of the contents of the storage spaces listed below, with the contents being sold to the highest bidder. Kings: Marquese Chriss, PF Chriss has skyrocketed up draft boards in the past few months and it’s easy to understand why. At 6-foot-10, he might be the most athletic player in this year’s draft.
Suns: Domantas Sabonis,PF
Celtics: Furkan Korkmaz, SG
Everyone hopes this works out as Domantas’ dad, Arvydas, was a pleasure to watch. The guy passed out of the post like no other. The big concern with Domantas is his lack of athleticism.
The Celtics need shooters like you read about and Korkmaz would help ail that situation in the Boston back court. The C’s have plenty of guards who can guard and that’s Korkmaz’s weakness.
No. 14
More from ďŹ rst round
Bulls: Bryce Johnson, PF
Poeltl is another player who runs the floor well for a man his size (7-foot-1) but that basically describes all big men in the NBA these days. There’s a reason guys like Kendrick Perkins can’t get big contracts.
The Bulls could wind up going with a guard if they are to trade away Jimmy Butler and/or Derrick Rose, but when in doubt go with the best player available. That’s Johnson, who was a rebounding machine for the Tar Heels.
The following self-storage Cube contents containing household and other goods will be sold for cash by CubeSmart 777 Mayfair Street to satisfy a lien on JULY 5, 2016 at approx. 11:30 AM at www.storagetreasures.com
