BALTIMORE POLICE OFFICER CLEARED IN FREDDIE GRAY’S DEATH
1
Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson Jr. was cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of injuries sustained while in police custody. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams found Gsoodson, who is also black, not guilty of all criminal counts including second-degree depraved heart murder, the most serious accusation against any of the six officers charged in connection with Gray’s death. Prosecutors had failed to secure convictions in two earlier trials of police officers. Goodson, 46, was the driver of a police transport van in which Gray broke his neck in April 2015. Goodson had also faced three counts of manslaughter, and single counts of reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and misconduct in office. REUTERS
TORNADO, HAIL STORMS KILL AT LEAST 78 PEOPLE IN CHINA
2
A tornado, hail storms and driving rain killed at least 78 people and injured some 500 in eastern China on Thursday, flattening power lines, overturning cars and ripping roofs off houses in Jiangsu province. The storm struck midafternoon near Yancheng city, a few hours’ drive north of China’s commercial capital, Shanghai, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said. Winds of 78 mph battered several townships in Funing county, the official Xinhua news agency said. “I heard the gales and ran upstairs to shut the windows,” Funing resident Xie Litian, 62, told Xinhua. “I had hardly reached the top of the stairs when I heard a boom and saw the entire wall with the windows on it torn away.” When the storm subsided and Xie escaped, all the neighboring houses were gone. SPLIT SUPREME COURT BLOCKS OBAMA IMMIGRATION PLAN

NEWS
The Supreme Court dealt President Barack Obama a harsh defeat by blocking his plan to spare millions of illegal immigrants from deportation in a split 4-4 ruling he called frustrating to those aiming to fix America’s broken immigration system. The ruling, coming seven months before Obama’s term in office ends, marked the latest success that his Republican adversaries have had in thwarting a major policy initiative of the Democratic president. It also guarantees that immigration will remain a prominent part of the campaign ahead of the Nov. 8 election in which voters will pick his successor. REUTERS
City won’t reject resignations from BLS leaders Faculty butts heads with mayor, superintendent after Boston Latin School administrators step down. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
City leaders said Thursday they would accept resignations from two top officials at the prestigious Boston Latin School. Lynne Mooney Teta, BLS headmaster, and Malcolm Flynn, assistant headmaster, this week announced they would step down amid scrutiny of the racial climate at the exam school that has included a student-led social media campaign and city and federal investigations. Faculty had called on Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang not to accept their resignations, but Walsh said in a news conference that his administration was instead looking to the future. “Our intention is to continue the greatness and excellence that happens at this school,” Walsh said. “As I said, even this year — a difficult year for a lot of people — 410 graduates graduated, the largest graduating class in the history of this school. The expectation is to keep up the strong rigor in this school.” At that point, Zita Cousins, a BLS guidance counselor, leaned in to the microphone he was using and announced: “We do not want the headmaster or Mr. Flynn to resign.” Outside the school, faculty made a vocal stand, chanting, “BLS! BLS!” Boston Globe reporter Meghan Irons tweeted it was a “crazy scene” as BLS faculty were “calling and cheering drowning out

Walsh and [Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy] Chang.” The spectacle came after a closed-door discussion inside the school that faculty told reporters was heated. Some parents began circulating the mayor’s cellphone number, urging others to pester him with the words: “What’s the plan Marty? #WeAreBLS,” according to WGBH’s Peter Kadzis. Speaking with reporters Thursday, Flynn reiterated his stance blaming Walsh and Chang for how they responded to the allegations that surfaced this year, according to coverage in The Boston Herald.
Flynn, who has been an educator at the school for five decades, didn’t mince words in his resignation letter this week, writing that, “It is my belief that our school and our efforts here have been unfairly judged, for reasons that go well beyond the walls of BLS.” The swirl of controversy around BLS and its leadership started in January, when students Meggie Noel and Kylie Webster-Cazeau with a group called BLS BLACK (Black Leaders Aspiring for Change and Knowledge) posted a video in which they were critical of the way the school has addressed complaints
about racially charged incidents involving classmates and teachers. Much of that criticism continued online, with commentary from those in the school community and outside it surfacing on Twitter via the hashtag #BlackatBLS. Following Teta’s resignation, BLS BLACK wrote in a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday that the group was “just as shocked as the general public” about the news. “We want to emphasize that her decision is completely independent of the mission of the # BlackAtBLSmovement which is to increase racial inclusion and race explicit dialogue at Boston Latin School,” the statement reads. An investigation run by the School Department found BLS didn’t properly handle one incident, in which a nonblack student threatened a black student and used a racial slur. It was one of seven reported cases the city investigated. Another investigation led by the office of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz is underway.

Ben Affleck slurs profane Deflategate rant on HBO show “Deflategate is the ultimate bulls— f—ing outrage of sports.” ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Ben Affleck certainly let loose on HBO’s “Any Given Wednesday” with Bill Simmons on Wednesday night. In an epic five-minute rant, Affleck, a noted New England Patriots fan, slammed the NFL and its commissioner, Roger Goodell, for quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension after using underinflated balls during a playoff game last year. Dropping the F-bomb 16 times, the actor alleged Brady’s punishment was the result of a “conspiracy” of people in the NFL, calling the entire ordeal “f—ing ridiculous smear campaign.” “We haven’t done anything to address this crisis of domestic violence in the NFL, but the f—ing football better not be 8 percent lighter,” Affleck quipped. It would also give the attorney general power to file civil actions for injunctive relief on behalf of workers. According to Community Labor United, a coalition supporting the legislation, a total of $700 million in wages is stolen annually in Massachusetts from about 350,000 workers, and the attorney general is able to recover about $5.2 million. Workers speaking at the coalition’s rally said they’d experienced wage thefts in various forms. SHNS

sit-in over gun control Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday ended a daylong sit-in at the chamber to protest the lack of action on gun-control measures. Democratic members had taken over the House on Wednesday, sitting on the floor while chanting and singing, and stayed all night to push for gun control legislation after the massacre at a gay nightclub
in Orlando, Florida, even though Republicans adjourned the House and went home for a holiday break. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, told Reuters that lawmakers would now go back to their districts to build support for legislation. Â Dramatic tactics by legislators are rare in the U.S. Capitol, and the protest underscored how
sensitive the gun control issue has become after the June 12 massacre in which a U.S.-born gunman pledging allegiance to the Islamic State killed 49 people. The House Democrats were seeking votes on legislation to expand background checks for gun purchases, as well as measures to curb the sale of weapons to people on government watch lists. REUTERS

TIME TO ROLL UP SOME SLEEVES With spring over and summer steaming down, my wife and I finally took on the dirty work of cleaning the ornamental pond in our backyard, or as I was calling it, “Zika Test Pool No. 1.” We shooed away the mosquitoes, bailed out the muck and after a couple of hard hours we were done. We dropped in a hose to refill it, and watched a half dozen goldfish go happily back to swimming. Well, who knows if they are happy? It’s hard to tell with fish. Don’t get me wrong. Our pond is no big deal. The whole thing is only about the size of a bathtub. A regular bathtub. Not one of those super-sized Cialis tubs that seem to be in some backyards judging from what I see on TV. But keeping our little pond clean, healthy and
THE FOREMAN OPINION
BRIEF
The only way to keep the pond running properly is to routinely engage in tiring, inglorious, messy and grinding labor. This draws no praise from our neighbors. Not one glowing item appears in the media — social or otherwise. Certainly we’ve never seen a bump in our approval polls. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about our annual pond cleaning as politicos, left, right and center, have lately staged newsmaking stunts to show their dedication to one cause or another. And I wish they’d just retreat from the limelight, quietly pull on their work gloves, and actually try to produce real results. That may not get them headlines or reelected. But I suspect all of us little fish might enjoy it.
TOM FOREMAN vaguely presentable always requires more work than one might imagine. We have to fertilize the lily, pull weeds and treat it with a chemical that keeps the fish alive. We also have to flush out the filter on the fountain every few days or else it dribbles like a toddler eating soup. The point is, no matter how much we wish the pond would take care of itself, it won’t. We’ve tried shouting speeches at it. We’ve waved signs. We’ve staged a sit-in. We’ve threatened it with lawsuits. We’ve even collected signatures on a petition. No dice.

US banks flex capital muscle Big banks are proving themselves to be stronger and sounder in an annual regulatory stress test, even as the Federal Reserve changes doomsday scenarios to keep them on their toes. The Fed said each of the 33 U.S. banks that underwent its standardized stress test were able to stay above minimum required capital levels in severe economic and market conditions. Banks that participated last year also passed, but their capital levels have largely improved since then. Overall, the 33 banks would suffer $385 billion in loan losses over nine quarters under the most severe scenario, the Fed said. In aggregate, a key ratio measuring high-quality capital against riskweighted assets, known as the Tier 1 common equity ratio, would drop to a low of 8.4 percent. That is well above the 4.5 percent minimum set by regulators. Since the Fed started stress testing banks in 2009, capital levels have risen and credit quality has improved, with bad loans rolling off the books. The Fed creates new inputs for market and economic chaos each year, and shocked investors in January when it included negative interest rates in the worst-case scenario. REUTERS

So much has changed since then. Here are some ways the original modern super-duper-mega blockbuster makes for a surprising time capsule. MATT PRIGGE
SUMMER EVENT MOVIES WERE STILL RELATIVELY NEW
The summer movie as a concept dates back to “Jaws, but it didn’t really start becoming what it is today — namely, outsized and basically running all year long — until 1996.

America does the brunt of the legwork taking out our extraterrestrial overlords — and in only three days! — but the movie is ultimately utopian. No spoilers for Kimiko Glenn The actress weighs in on the show’s shocking fourth season.
One more thing You’re filling the late Adrienne Shelley’s iconic role in “Waitress” on Broadway. Is there particular pressure on playing that character, knowing she wrote and directed the film version of the story, too? It’s been a breath of fresh air. I thought about putting a lot of pressure on myself at first, but I also wanted to give it new life because of Adrienne. I think I found something really nice and I hope she’s proud. A lot of her family have come [to the show], and said she would have loved what I’ve done, and that means so much to me. Returning to the stage has been amazing. It feels like home to me.

The fourth season of “Orange Is the New Black” dropped on Netflix last Friday, and it wouldn’t be totally out of line for us to assume you may have rabidly consumed all 13 episodes. If you have (and are already scouring the web for Season 5 spoilers), read on: We tapped actress Kimiko Glenn who plays tree-hugging incessant babbler Brook Soso to fill us in on her vital role in that shocking finale. Actually, just kidding! “I don’t even want to allude to it!” she says. “No one knew until we read through [the script], and I thought, ‘This is not real.’”

But what is real is the life Glenn gives to Soso in Season 4. Since her character’s Season 2 introduction, fans had only known her to be the half-

of friends in the racially divided prison. Following a failed suicide attempt at the end of Season 3, we kick off the fourth with Soso’s burgeoning friendship/ romance with fellow inmate, Poussey (Samira Wiley). Glenn weighs in on her character’s Season 4 arc, sharing scenes with the sensational Wiley and her new role in Broadway’s “Waitress.” Warning: This interview includes spoilers from Season 4. What is it like for you as an actress knowing that the day after your new season drops people could have already binge watched it? Well, it’s crazy because it’s been less of an explosion this year than other times. I think because it’s on the GETTY fourth IMAGES season, the diehards are still bingeing but a lot of people are enjoying it one episode at the time. In the past, it’s been like a gunshot, where everyone’s seen the show the next day and asking about the new season already. It’s been slow and steady this time. It’s nice. We finally get a Soso backstory episode this
season. Were you excited when you found out? Any time you get more material for a character it’s exciting because it’s another clue as to who they are. With television, the possibilities are endless, and then there’s the fact that we don’t know specifically what she’s done [to go to jail] yet, that’s exciting, too. There’s the theme this season of characters discovering their own racist
tendencies, and Soso was one of the most surprising when she makes assumptions about Poussey’s upbringing. I was a little bit shocked that she would be as insensitive as she was in that situation. She’s so educated and socially conscious about that sort of thing, so I was surprised she let herself blab. But then, no matter who you are, or what education level you’ve achieved, you might hold some prejudice because of your parents or surroundings as a kid. I was just surprised she would so openly do it. Let’s talk about Poussey and Soso’s romance. She finds you at the end of Season 3 after Soso’s suicide attempt and you can see the start of a bond. Honestly, there is no one better to have a scene with or work with or be able to kiss than Samira Wiley. She’s so attractive and adorable and fun to play off of. And selfishly, for me, the past two seasons I haven’t had a proper scene partner — someone to listen to me and respond and respect what I say as Brook — and that can be a little hard playing. It was a game-changer for me. I felt liberated. My character gets to smile and feel loved, and you didn’t get to see that in the past two seasons. You know someone more when you see someone loving them.

“The Shallows” Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Stars: Blake Lively, a shark Rating: PG-13 Jean-Luc Godard said all a movie needed was a girl and a gun. “The Shallows” goes with a girl and a shark. In fact, that’s all it has. It needs nothing else. A tiny, lean, stripped-down tale of survival unleashed into a wasteland overrun with blockbuster giants, it plays David to the many Goliaths, offering a reminder that less is more in an age when more is always mistaken for more. All it does is pit Blake Lively, a surfer in a beauteous and remote Mexican alcove, against a great white that doesn’t want her to reach shore. Sometimes it’s that simple. And it’s the definition of simple. Once Lively’s Nancy has swum out far enough to become potential fish food, she has next to nothing to help her — just a buoy, a set of rocks peeking out above the surf and, as a good sick joke, a chomped-up whale carcass, upon which our bikini-d cover girl has to climb for safety. In the likes of “Non-Stop” and “Run All Night” — both of which paired him with Liam Neeson — the director delivered the kind of whip-smart time-killer studios used to churn out at a steady clip. His star is comfortable and good-humored even when things get hairy, and ColletSerra rewards her by having his camera only ogle her minimally. This isn’t always a smart movie, but it’s smart moviemaking, knowing its limitations as well as its increasingly rarified strengths. MATT PRIGGE

“Free State of Jones”
“The Neon Demon”
Director: Gary Ross Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw Rating: R “Free State of Jones” is the kind of movie they just don’t make anymore. But sometimes that’s a good thing. Many a genre has fallen by the wayside as blockbusters have taken over the multiplex. One is the stiff historical saga, where filmmakers burn epic running times fudging the truth in the name of edutainment. Thing is, “Free State of Jones” actually does boast a fascinating and not terribly well-known true tale. Matthew McConaughey’s Newton Knight is a hotheaded good ol’ boy who, toward the
end of the Civil War, helped lead his fellow Mississippians in a rebellion against the Confederacy. They were a band where white and black and even womenfolk were seen as equal. Initially consisting of runaway slaves and war deserters, they swelled in numbers as they took on the evil empire, only to watch as their utopia crumbled during Reconstruction and the rise of corrupt bureaucracies and white-on-black violence. This is a lot to cover, even over 139 minutes, and “Jones” can’t help but feel like a Netflix miniseries hacked into a shapeless blob. Individual scenes and performances stick out, and it’s clear writer-director Gary Ross was very sincere about not making this just another reductive prestige picture. But it becomes an impossible movie Ross just couldn’t crack. MP
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Stars: Elle Fanning, Jena Malone Rating: R One shouldn’t assume models have little on their minds, and the same goes for Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon.” Like “Drive” and “Bronson,” this fashion world takedown is a crazy/beautiful burlesque of anguish and ultraviolence, soaked in loud colors and a louder electro-score. You could say Refn is a director of style, not ideas. But his style needs to run on ideas — big, provocative, silly ones to match his big, provocative, silly style. And so we take a Danteesque trip into the inferno of modeling — a world of
interchangeable blond stick figures complicit in their own oppression. Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a new fish who rankles the longtime pros by quickly becoming the next big thing. The models are all of them victims, but they’re also oppressors. Do they turn on the industry that treats them like priced flesh? No, they turn on each other. It’s a stretch to say “The Neon Demon” works as social commentary, but at heart it’s a funhouse mirror reflection of our tendency to prolong broken, corrupt systems by attacking players, not the game. But again, that’s ascribing too much thought to a film where one character bangs a corpse. Still, Refn has a strong foundation to mostly justify his considerable excesses and to make it deeper than even Refn may realize. MP

Celtics stand pat at No. 3, select Brown Danny Ainge tabbed the Cal swingman despite attempting monster trades for the No. 3 pick. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Celtics stunned by not making a stunning move at the top of the draft Thursday, keeping their pick and selecting Cal swingman Jaylen Brown, a small forward out of California. If Brown pans out, he could be a Paul Pierce-like force in Boston, given his scoring ability. Brown, who Metro had going to the Celtics at No. 3 in mock drafts for the past four months, was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year at Cal, averaging 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He is a prototype NBA small forward, sizewise, already. The 19-year-old is 6-foot-7 and weighs 223 pounds.
“[Danny] Ainge loves Jaylen Brown,” ESPN’s Jeff Goodman tweeted Thursday night. “[He’s] a big, strong, athletic and versatile forward. Not a great shooter, but that’s the area he feels he can improve most. Ainge also loved the fact that he worked out against anyone and everyone — unlike all the other top guys.” Ainge gave Brown high praise prior to the draft. “It was an excellent workout [he had with us],” the typically reserved Ainge told MassLive.com. Despite Ainge’s infatuation with Brown, the Celtics’ boss was furiously attempting to trade the No. 3 pick prior to the selection, according to multiple reports. “Ainge tried — and wanted to make a deal,” Goodman said. “But he’ll be happy with Brown, who can also play right away. [He’s] a physical specimen.” In the minutes before the Celtics made their pick, the Boston Herald’s

Steve Bulpett tweeted: “GM just texts to say Ainge has been playing hardball all day, adds, ‘By this point, he’d better walk away with something.’” There were rumors all day that the Celtics were going to going to trade the No. 3 pick to either Philadelphia or Chicago. ESPN’s Marc Stein tweeted at the start of the draft that the 76ers were offering Nerlens Noel, the No. 24 pick and the No. 26 pick and Robert Covington in exchange for the No. 3 pick. The name Jimmy Butler, the Bulls 2-guard, was again was floated in the minutes before the draft. Given that Chicago traded away point guard Derrick Rose a day prior, it was believed that the Bulls were ready to go into full rebuild-mode. As expected, LSU’s Ben Simmons went to the 76ers at No. 1 and Duke’s Brandon Ingram went to the Lakers at No. 2. “I’m glad I ended up where I am,” Brown told ESPN.
