THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

BALTIMORE POLICE OFFICER CLEARED IN FREDDIE GRAY’S DEATH

1

Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson Jr. was cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of injuries sustained while in police custody. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams found Goodson, who is also black, not guilty of all criminal counts including second-degree depraved heart murder, the most serious accusation against any of the six officers charged in connection with Gray’s death. Prosecutors had failed to secure convictions in two earlier trials of police officers. Goodson, 46, was the driver of a police transport van in which Gray broke his neck in April 2015. Goodson had also faced three counts of manslaughter, and single counts of reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and misconduct in office. REUTERS

TORNADO, HAIL STORMS KILL AT LEAST 78 PEOPLE IN CHINA

2

A tornado, hail storms and driving rain killed at least 78 people and injured some 500 in eastern China on Thursday, flattening power lines, overturning cars and ripping roofs off houses in Jiangsu province. The storm struck midafternoon near Yancheng city, a few hours’ drive north of China’s commercial capital, Shanghai, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said. Winds of 78 mph battered several townships in Funing county, the official Xinhua news agency said. “I heard the gales and ran upstairs to shut the windows,” Funing resident Xie Litian, 62, told Xinhua. “I had hardly reached the top of the stairs when I heard a boom and saw the entire wall with the windows on it torn away.” When the storm subsided and Xie escaped, all the neighboring houses were gone. SPLIT SUPREME COURT BLOCKS OBAMA IMMIGRATION PLAN

METRO.US WEEKEND, JUNE 24-26, 2016

NEWS

The Supreme Court dealt President Barack Obama a harsh defeat by blocking his plan to spare millions of illegal immigrants from deportation in a split 4-4 ruling he called frustrating to those aiming to fix America’s broken immigration system. The ruling, coming seven months before Obama’s term in office ends, marked the latest success that his Republican adversaries have had in thwarting a major policy initiative of the Democratic president. It also guarantees that immigration will remain a prominent part of the campaign ahead of the Nov. 8 election in which voters will pick his successor. REUTERS

Designer for ‘Project Runway’ talks Pride, honesty, HIV advocacy Mondo Guerra announced he was HIV-positive during Season 8 of the fashion competition. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

For fashion designer Mondo Guerra, learning he was HIV positive 15 years ago took him to a dark place. Now, he shares his experience to help others through their tough times — all while using his love of creativity. Guerra was diagnosed with HIV when he was 23 years old and living in New York City. He said he hit rock bottom when he found himself in a hospital bed back home in Denver dying from pneumonia. He is now a passionate advocate for HIV treatment and awareness. Guerra is working with the “I Design” national campaign, which aims to empower individuals living with HIV to have open and honest discussions with their doctors to address their issues and find the support they need. “Everybody has a different situation and everybody has their story,” Guerra said. “And I think it’s very important for people to share their story — and behind every story there is a power.” For Guerra, opening up about being HIV positive is very personal. For nearly a decade he kept his diagnosis to himself, out of what he says was embarrassment and fear. He said that he withheld the truth from his loved ones but still continued to be creative with his design work as a way to ease the hard times. “I was continuing to work and be creative, but there was a point where

I was pushing that away out of my life, and that’s when I got really scared,” Guerra said. “When I wasn’t talking about my situation, I wasn’t allowing people to not only support me but to love me.” Guerra decided to reveal his diagnosis while a contestant on Season 8 of “Project Runway,” after realizing that holding onto the truth was not allowing him to fully respect

specting myself.” Guerra said that although he was excited after sharing his emotional story on national television, he then was scared about how people would react. But he said he was met with an outpouring of support and positive feedback that became a “life changer” for him. For the past five years, the designer — who went on to win “Project Runway All-Stars” — has been speaking to others who have been diagnosed with HIV. Guerra said he understands that everyone deals with the news differently, but it is important to start that first conversation with someone. He said hearing other people’s stories inspires him and makes him want to work harder to advocate for the campaign, which, in the end, pushes him to continue being creative as a designer. Guerra said he is feeling better than ever, and as he makes his return to the Big Apple, he has

his work. “Ever since I was a kid I have always been creative. It has always been my escape, it has allowed me to breathe,” he said. “When I was on that runway I was sharing my work and I wasn’t being honest about the message, and there was a month that I thought to myself that if I’m not going to talk about this right now and not share the message behind my work, then I am disre-

been asked to be a judge at the 2016 NYC Pride March on June 26. Despite having lived in New York City for 15 years, Guerra said he never went to the parade. But he’s now excited to be a part of it. He will be judging the floats and parade participants — dressed in an outfit he said looks like a “kaleidoscope pinwheel.” He said that as a designer, originality is going to be something he focuses on in judging. Guerra added that he’s curious to see how everyone interprets this year’s theme — “Equality Needs You” — especially in light of the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando earlier this month. Guerra said the June 12 massacre was difficult to process, and admits that the news left him afraid to leave his house for three days. But he said he believes it is important for people to attend Sunday’s march and show that fear will never win. “It’s just about showing up and participating,” he said.” This is a really great opportunity to become stronger.”

NY Liberty fans kick off Pride Night with locker room wedding Katrina Poulos and Michelle May have been season- ticket holders since 2014. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Other than championships, locker rooms usually don’t host many celebrations. On Friday, though, a locker room in Madison Square Garden will be the backdrop for two diehard basketball fans who are tying the knot. Katrina Poulos and Michelle May are set to say their “I do’s” inside the New York Liberty women’s basketball team’s locker room around 2 p.m. in front of a small group of family and friends. The basketball-loving couple — who have been season-ticket holders for the team since 2014 — initially planned to get married in Las Vegas. They scrapped that after asking if it was possible to have engagement photos taken

on the basketball court and finding out they could get married in the locker room. “We were so excited,” May said. “To us, this is us. This is something that represents us, it’s what we enjoy doing together.” The couple, who met

online and have been together for four years, attend New York Liberty games as often as possible and encourage family and friends to join them. Poulos, who is from Miami, said she has been a Liberty fan since 1997 and feels like she grew

up with the team. May, a native New Yorker, was a basketball fan, but said she got hooked on the Liberty the first time she went to a game. On Friday afternoon, both women will be wearing traditional wedding dresses, but in keeping with the basketball theme, they’ll be wearing custom-made converse sneakers featuring their wedding date, names and a rainbow heart. The Long Island couple also decided to include their love for basketball in other aspects of their wedding — the cake topper will feature them with a basketball, and there will be a WNBA ball with their photo on it. The wedding, the first to take place inside the locker room, will also be the kickoff for the annual Pride Night celebration at Madison Square Garden, and both women say they feel lucky to be able to celebrate their special day while also celebrating LGBT pride. “It’s just amazing to be able to share Pride Night,” May said. “It’s amazing

that we can do something like this.” Poulos added that it’s great to see Madison Square Garden and the Liberty show their strong support for the LGBT community. “When you look at the team and you look at the arena, it’s a family. It’s amazing for us to be kicking off such an amazing night not just for the gay community but really for the community,” Poulos said. “We’re just two people that love each other and love the game.” As part of the Pride Night celebrations, which begin at 7:30 p.m. when the Liberty take on the Chicago Sky, the first 5,000 fans

will receive #OrlandoUnited wristbands. Attendees will also be able to participate in a NOH8 campaign open photo shoot. The photo shoot — which costs $40 for single photos and $25 a person for group photos — is located outside the MSG box office in Chase Square from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The night will also feature a performance by Lez Zeppelin, an all-female tribute band performing songs by Led Zeppelin, during the halftime show. The New York Liberty will be donating $5,000 to the OneOrlando Fund, created to help the community following the June 12 massacre there. The Liberty’s Pride Month partner, Resorts World Casino NYC, will make a matching donation of $5,000 “We are celebrating Pride with the Liberty, it’s the biggest wedding reception that you can ever have,” May said. “No matter who is there that night, we all have one thing in common, and it’s loving the Liberty.”

Mayor: NYC Pride March will be largest, safest in history As rainbow flags take over the streets of Manhattan to show the unity of the Big Apple this weekend, New York City’s Finest plans to keep all New Yorkers — and outof-towners — safe. Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton came together with NYC Pride, organizers of the NYC Pride March, on Thursday to go over the details of Sunday’s celebration to ensure safety measures are in place. According to officials, the march — which kicks off at noon on 36th Street and Fifth Avenue — is expected to surpass last year’s record number of 1.6 million spectators. De Blasio added that after the shooting in Orlando, where 49 people were killed when a gunman entered the gay

nightclub Pulse armed with an assault rifle and handgun, New York City is obligated this weekend to be an example of love and inclusion for the country. “From time to time this year we have talked about New York values, so I will restate, New York values include inclusion, a respect of our diversity, a respect for everyone’s right to speak up and express themselves, and that is what will be epitomized on Sunday,” de Blasio said. The mayor said although there are no specific threats directed against the march, the city remains vigilant. In anticipation of a historically large number of attendees expected at the parade, the NYPD will have an increased number of uniformed of-

ficers along the route and will have plain-clothes officers in the crowds. There will also be a large increase in active anti-terrorism efforts, with heavy-weapons teams present, counterterrorism personnel with radiation-detection de-

vices, explosive-detection canines, helicopters and rooftop patrols. Vessels will also be assigned to patrol the city’s waterways. The NYPD will also be increasing the presence of transit officers over the weekend.

Paradegoers are asked to keep their eyes and ears open and report anything suspicious they might encounter. “You will be safe. You will be protected,” de Blasio said. “It is important for everyone to know that attending this parade on Sunday is an act of pride by and for and with the LGBT community and it’s also an act of pride in this city.” David Studinski, cochair of NYC Pride, said Thursday that the hearts of the LGBT community are still heavy from the Orlando shooting and over the weekend — and afterward — they will keep the victims with them. He said that this weekend’s Pride events, which conclude with the march, are a celebration but are also moments of aware-

ness. He urged members of the LGBT community to come out and show the strength of their pride and love. “If you are anxious or nervous, maybe you are a little uncertain, that’s OK, that’s normal,” Studinski said. “The important thing is we remember those 49 people we lost last weekend and so many other lives we lost, and we don’t hide. ... A lot of us have started out in closets, and that’s the last thing we should do.” ANGY ALTAMIRANO

JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

A Brooklyn home damaged in Hurricane Sandy that was part of the city’s Build it Back program collapsed Wednesday as a family was preparing to move in. The Gerritsen Beach home at 70 Beacon Court was undergoing repairs from damage it sustained in the 2012 storm when it toppled over, separating the floor from its foundation, NBC4 reported. No one was injured in the collapse, according to NY1, which added that neighbors said the incident causes concern about whether the postSandy work was being done properly on the many houses still being repaired from the storm. “You had a contractor working in it. Why did it collapse?” State Sen. Martin Golden of Brooklyn told by NY1. “So now the contractor is ceasing operations until architects and engineers inspect all of these prop-

erties tomorrow and the next day to make sure that there are no other flaws going on.” Residents told NBC4 the family who lived there was due to move in to the new home in about a month. Because of the collapse, the construction was a total loss, and the rebuild must now start again from scratch, NY1 added. The city was investigating why the structure fell apart. “[This incident] is kinda like reliving Sandy,” neighbor Linda Rizzotto told NBC4. “It’s like Sandy never goes away.”

Officials: Two men rescued from Hudson seemed to be drunk Two men rescued by authorities from the Hudson River on Wednesday night appeared to be intoxicated. Two men who had tied a boat to a dock at the 79th Street Boat Basin allegedly jumped into the water to go swimming before getting in trouble and needing to be rescued, CBS2 reported. A Boat Basin restaurant customer called 911 and said the two men appeared to be drowning in the river, according to NBC4, which added that the subsequent nighttime rescue

involving helicopters was witnessed by Boat Basin diners. “I saw two helicopters. One was moving around; one was stationary. … Then the ambulances came as well,” witness Keith Faria told NBC4. The two men were finally pulled from the river just before 9 p.m., officials said to CBS2, adding that they were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene. The men were taken to Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital and treated for minor injuries. JASON NUCKOLLS

Britons appear to have voted in a referendum to stay in the European Union, opinion polls showed Thursday, and prominent “Brexit” campaigners acknowledged they looked likely to lose. Nigel Farage, head of the U.K. Independence Party and a leading voice in favor of leaving the EU, told Sky News: “It’s been an extraordinary referendum campaign; turnout looks to be exceptionally high and looks like Remain will edge it.” Farage said his prediction was based on “what I know from some of my friends in the financial markets who have done some big polling.” Government minister Theresa Villiers, who also campaigned for Britain to leave, told Sky News her instinct was that the Remain side had won. A vote to stay would come as a massive relief to Britain’s 27 EU partners, which had feared the departure of the bloc’s second-biggest economy would weaken Europe’s

global clout and fuel the rise of “euroskeptic” movements in other countries. Before a single result had emerged from the 382 local counting areas, a survey by pollster YouGov showed Remain ahead by a margin of 52 percent to 48 percent. Unlike a classic exit poll, it was based on online responses by a preselected sample of people rather than a survey of voters as they left polling stations. Pollster Ipsos-Mori also put Remain in the lead, saying surveys it had carried out Wednesday and Thursday gave it a 54-46 margin of victory. An Ipsos-Mori poll published earlier had just a 52-48 split for Remain. The pound climbed to its highest point for this year, rising above $1.50, up almost 1 percent on the day, though it later eased to around 1.4950. “It’s early days and there will be twists and turns through the early hours of this morning,

but for now, the markets have taken that YouGov poll as a strong indication that the Remain camp has won,” said Jeremy Cook, chief economist at international payments company World First in London. In the first result officially declared, the British overseas territory of Gibraltar bordering Spain voted overwhelmingly in favor of Remain, as widely expected. The four-month campaign has sharply polarized the nation and the final outcome of the vote could change the face of Europe. If Britain becomes the first state to leave the EU, the so-called Brexit would be the biggest blow to the 28-nation bloc since its foundation. The EU would be stripped of its leading freemarket advocate and one of its two main military powers, and could face calls for similar votes by anti-EU politicians in other countries. REUTERS

Clinton’s server technician declines to answer court-ordered questions The computer technician who set up Hillary Clinton’s private email server for her work as secretary of state declined to answer questions more than 125 times during a deposition ordered by a federal judge, a transcript released Thursday shows. Bryan Pagliano worked on Clinton’s previous presidential run in 2008. He joined the State Department’s technology unit the next year as one of Clinton’s political appointees and set up the unauthorized server in her

New York home. The decision to set up the server has dogged Clinton, the presumptive Democratic Party candidate ahead of the election, and clouded her campaign with uncertainty. A majority of voters say they find her dishonest, polls show, with many citing her private server as a reason. Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court in Washington had ordered Pagliano and other Clinton aides and department officials to give sworn testimony to help him decide

whether the server was set up to thwart the public’s right to see government records. Sullivan is overseeing an action by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group suing the State Department. It is one of scores of such lawsuits filed by individuals and groups who were incorrectly told by the government that Clinton had no emails before the arrangement became publicly known in 2015, two years after Clinton left the department. With spring over and summer steaming down, my wife and I finally took on the dirty work of cleaning the ornamental pond in our backyard, or as I was calling it, “Zika Test Pool No. 1.” We shooed away the mosquitoes, bailed out the muck and after a couple of hard hours we were done. We dropped in a hose to refill it, and watched a half dozen goldfish go happily back to swimming. Well, who knows if they are happy? It’s hard to tell with fish. Don’t get me wrong. Our pond is no big deal. The whole thing is only about the size of a bathtub. A regular bathtub. Not one of those super-sized Cialis tubs that seem to be in some backyards judging from what I see on TV. But keeping our little pond clean, healthy and

THE FOREMAN OPINION

TOM FOREMAN vaguely presentable always requires more work than one might imagine. We have to fertilize the lily, pull weeds and treat it with a chemical that keeps the fish alive. We also have to flush out the filter on the fountain every few days or else it dribbles like a toddler eating soup. The point is, no matter how much we wish the pond would take care of itself, it won’t. We’ve tried shouting speeches at it. We’ve waved signs. We’ve staged a sit-in. We’ve threatened it with lawsuits. We’ve even collected signatures on a petition. No dice.

BRIEF

The only way to keep the pond running properly is to routinely engage in tiring, inglorious, messy and grinding labor. This draws no praise from our neighbors. Not one glowing item appears in the media — social or otherwise. Certainly we’ve never seen a bump in our approval polls. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about our annual pond cleaning as politicos, left, right and center, have lately staged newsmaking stunts to show their dedication to one cause or another. And I wish they’d just retreat from the limelight, quietly pull on their work gloves, and actually try to produce real results. That may not get them headlines or reelected. But I suspect all of us little fish might enjoy it.

The Fed said each of the 33 U.S. banks that underwent its standardized stress test were able to stay above minimum required capital levels in severe economic and market conditions. Banks that participated last year also passed, but their capital levels have largely improved since then. Overall, the 33 banks would suffer $385 billion in loan losses over nine quarters under the most severe scenario, the Fed said. In aggregate, a key ratio measuring high-quality capital against riskweighted assets, known as the Tier 1 common equity ratio, would drop to a low of 8.4 percent. That is well above the 4.5 percent minimum set by regulators. Since the Fed started stress testing banks in 2009, capital levels have risen and credit quality has improved, with bad loans rolling off the books. The Fed creates new inputs for market and economic chaos each year, and shocked investors in January when it included negative interest rates in the worst-case scenario. REUTERS

Democrats end House sit-in over gun control Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday ended a daylong sit-in at the chamber to protest the lack of action on gun-control measures. Democratic members had taken over the House on Wednesday, sitting on the floor while chanting and singing, and stayed all night to push for gun control legislation after the massacre at a gay nightclub

in Orlando, Florida, even though Republicans adjourned the House and went home for a holiday break. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, told Reuters that lawmakers would now go back to their districts to build support for legislation. Dramatic tactics by legislators are rare in the U.S. Capitol, and the protest underscored how

sensitive the gun control issue has become after the June 12 massacre in which a U.S.-born gunman pledging allegiance to the Islamic State killed 49 people. The House Democrats were seeking votes on legislation to expand background checks for gun purchases, as well as measures to curb the sale of weapons to people on government watch lists.

Trump will not seek repayment of the loans via contributions came amid concerns from his backers that he does not have enough money to fund his campaign. He had only $1.3 million in cash to start the month. “I have absolutely no intention of paying myself back for the nearly $50 million dollars I have loaned to the campaign,” Trump said in a statement.

The New York developer has suggested he could use more of his personal wealth to help win the White House. “[Trump] has also said he will contribute significantly more money,” Steve Mnuchin, the top fundraiser for Trump’s campaign, said in an interview on CNBC earlier Thursday. Will Smith was still a Fresh Prince 20 years ago. ALL PHOTOS TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

The world finds out about the alien invasion the old fashioned way: by watching television. The few characters who have cellphones are essentially lugging around massive bricks. The baddies are taken down after someone signs into AOL. Goldblum’s techie is a genius who can do things like track people’s coordinates and upload viruses — acts that are no longer the exclusive domain of nerds.

THE FUN STARTS HERE

Ways the original ‘Independence Day’ movie just screams 1996 “Independence Day” turns 20 this year and to celebrate, 20th Century Fox has made a belated sequel that isn’t being screened for American critics ahead of its release. So much has changed since then. Here are some ways the original modern super-duper-mega blockbuster makes for a surprising time capsule. MATT PRIGGE

SUMMER EVENT MOVIES WERE STILL RELATIVELY NEW

The summer movie as a concept dates back to “Jaws,” but it didn’t really start becoming what it is today — namely, outsized and basically running all year long — until 1996.

“Independence Day” was teased months in advance with freaky Super Bowl spots — a practice that’s now common but was new back then. By the time the movie was released — on July

Fourth, of course — every man, woman and child felt it was their patriotic duty to spend 2½ hours watching humanity kick squiddy alien behind (wherever that was on their bodies).

WILL SMITH WASN’T YET A MAJOR STAR

REMEMBER LAWYER JOKES?

The cast of “ID4” was sprawling — so big that everyone had to be “affordable.” The heroes were played not by Arnold Schwarzenegger or John Travolta but by Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and, er, Randy Quaid. The closest to a big name was Will Smith, who at that point was simply a rapper-turned-actor with a hit sitcom, one acclaimed supporting turn in a serious

The ’90s were a time of relentless John Grisham books and their movie adaptations. With them came an even more relentless assault of lawyer jokes, most often flung by Jay Leno. So it doesn’t take more than a couple minutes for someone to make a joke about lawyers and how crooked they are, or whatever we hated about them.

drama (“Six Degrees of Separation”) and a hit (“Bad Boys”) in which he shared the lead with Martin Lawrence. With his good vibes and arsenal of trailer-friendly quips, the Fresh Prince got his John Wayne in “Stagecoach” break: Within his first moments onscreen it was clear he was the movies’ newest, biggest thing — big enough that he isn’t even in the sequel.

GAY PANIC JOKES!

IT BELIEVES IN GLOBAL (AND NATIONAL) UNITY

It doesn’t take long for the fliers played by Smith and Harry Connick Jr. to do a bit in which the latter gets down on his knee while holding the engagement ring Smith intends to give to his stripper girlfriend (Vivica A. Fox). Would you believe a colleague sees them and gets the wrong impression? These were the jokes, people!

America does the brunt of the legwork taking out our extraterrestrial overlords — and in only three days! — but the movie is ultimately utopian. Everyone, both here and abroad, comes together for a common cause, and Pullman’s prez, in his fiery “St. Crispin’s Day”-style speech before the big fight, even says that “Independence Day” is no longer just for America

but for all countries. (Surely the Breitbarts would handle that one well if it came out today.) Even scientists and the military work hand-in-hand, with only minimal infighting. Maybe “Independence Day” isn’t just a ceaselessly ridiculous behemoth that hypnotized the world into loving it 20 years back. Maybe it really is a lovely fantasy of a paradise that we’ve since destroyed.

IT WAS A BAD TIME FOR WOMEN — OR, YOU KNOW, MORESO

“ID4” is about military might, and therefore manly might. The men do all the flying and almost all of the decisionmaking. Yes, some of the female characters have careers, but they mostly stay home as the boys are out fighting.

They’re even the subject of career-shaming: Margaret Colin plays a White House staffer who ditched one of the heroes — Jeff Goldblum’s MIT expert/ environmentalist — for her job. She learns the error of her ways, and by the end she’s switched

out of those evil pantsuits into flannel lifted from Goldbum’s wardrobe. Also of note: While Bill Pullman plays an entirely noble version of Bill Clinton, the Hillary stand-in (Mary McDonnell) winds up dying after an attack. So there’s that.

“The Shallowsâ€? Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Stars: Blake Lively, a shark Rating: PG-13 Jean-Luc Godard said all a movie needed was a girl and a gun. “The Shallowsâ€? goes with a girl and a shark. In fact, that’s all it has. It needs nothing else. A tiny, lean, stripped-down tale of survival unleashed into a wasteland overrun with blockbuster giants, it plays David to the many Goliaths, oering a reminder that less is more in an age when more is always mistaken for more. All it does is pit Blake Lively, as a surfer in a beauteous and remote Mexican alcove, against a great white that doesn’t want her to reach shore. Sometimes it’s that simple. And it’s the deďŹ nition of simple. Once Lively’s Nancy has swam out far enough to become potential ďŹ sh food, she has next to nothing to help her — just a buoy, a set of rocks peeking out above the surf and, as a good sick joke, a chomped-up whale carcass, upon which our bikini-d cover girl has to climb for safety. There’s another ďŹ ne gross-out gag, involving an inventive use

of the jewelry she wears even while catching waves. Like its hero, the move is resourceful. Every time the script seems to have written itself into a wall, it ďŹ nds another out, making lots out of nothing at all. Director Jaume Collet-Serra is Hollywood’s last trashy genre ďŹ lmmaker standing. In the likes of “Non-Stopâ€? and “Run All Nightâ€? — both of which paired him with Liam Neeson — the director delivered the kind of whip-smart time-killer studios used to churn out at a steady clip. His star is comfortable and good-humored even when things get hairy, and ColletSerra rewards her by having his camera only ogle her minimally. This isn’t always a smart movie, but it’s smart moviemaking, knowing its limitations as well as its increasingly rariďŹ ed strengths. MATT PRIGGE

Director: Gary Ross Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw Rating: R “Free State of Jonesâ€? is the kind of movie they just don’t make anymore. But sometimes that’s a good thing. Many a genre has fallen by the wayside as blockbusters have taken over the multiplex. One is the sti historical saga, where ďŹ lmmakers burn epic running times fudging the truth in the name of edutainment. Thing is, “Free State of Jonesâ€? actually does boast a fascinating and not terribly well-known true tale. Matthew McConaughey’s Newton Knight is a hotheaded good ol’ boy who, toward the

end of the Civil War, helped lead his fellow Mississippians in a rebellion against the Confederacy. They were a band where white and black and even womenfolk were seen as equal. Initially comprised of runaway slaves and war deserters, they swelled in numbers as they took on the evil empire, only to watch as their utopia crumbled during Reconstruction and the rise of corrupt bureaucracies and white-on-black violence. This is a lot to cover, even over 139 minutes, and “Jonesâ€? can’t help but feel like a Netix miniseries hacked into a shapeless blob. Individual scenes and performances stick out, and it’s clear writer-director Gary Ross was very sincere about not making this just another reductive prestige picture. But it becomes an impossible movie Ross just couldn’t crack. MP

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Stars: Elle Fanning, Jena Malone Rating: R One shouldn’t assume models have little on their minds, and the same goes for Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon. Like “Drive and “Bronson, this fashion world takedown is a crazy/beautiful burlesque of anguish and ultraviolence, soaked in loud colors and a louder electro-score. You could say Refn is a director of style, not ideas. But his style needs to run on ideas — big, provocative, silly ones to match his big, provocative, silly style. And so we take a Danteesque trip into the inferno of modeling — a world of

interchangeable blond stick ďŹ gures complicit with their own oppression. Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a new ďŹ sh who rankles the longtime pros by quickly becoming the next big thing. The models are all of them victims, but they’re also oppressors. Do they turn on the industry that treats them like priced esh? No, they turn on each other. It’s a stretch to say “The Neon Demonâ€? works as social commentary, but at heart it’s a funhouse mirror reection of our tendency to prolong broken, corrupt systems by attacking players, not the game. But again, that’s ascribing too much thought to a ďŹ lm where one character bangs a corpse. Still, Refn has a strong foundation to mostly justify his considerable excesses and to make it deeper than even Refn may realize. MP

No spoilers for Kimiko Glenn The actress weighs in on the show’s shocking fourth season.

One more thing You’re ďŹ lling the late Adrienne Shelley’s iconic role in “Waitressâ€? on Broadway. Is there particular pressure on playing that character, knowing she wrote and directed the ďŹ lm version of the story, too? It’s been a breath of fresh air. I thought about putting a lot of pressure on myself at ďŹ rst, but I also wanted to give it new life because of Adrienne. I think I found something really nice and I hope she’s proud. A lot of her family have come [to the show], and said she would have loved what I’ve done, and that means so much to me. Returning to the stage has been amazing. It feels like home to me.

The fourth season of “Orange Is the New Black dropped on Netflix last Friday, and it wouldn’t be totally out of line for us to assume you may have rabidly consumed all 13 episodes. If you have (and are already scouring the web for Season 5 spoilers), read on: We tapped actress Kimiko Glenn who plays tree-hugging incessant babbler Brook Soso to fill us in on her vital role in that shocking finale. Actually, just kidding! “I don’t even want to allude to it! she says. “No one knew until we read through [the script], and I thought, ‘This is not real.’ But what is real is the life Glenn gives to Soso in Season 4. Since her character’s Season 2 introduction, fans had only known her to be the halfAsian hippie who once lived in a condemned tree (and was subsequently arrested) and now lives in Litchfield, where she has yet to find her own group of friends in the racially divided prison. Following a failed

ing when she makes assumptions about Poussey’s upbringing. I was a little bit shocked that she would be as insensitive as she was in that situation. She’s so educated and socially conscious about that sort of thing, so I was surprised she let herself blab. But then, no matter who you are, or what education level you’ve achieved, you might hold some prejudice because of your parents or surroundings as a kid. I was just surprised she would so openly do it.

suicide attempt at the end of Season 3, we kick off the fourth with Soso’s burgeoning friendship/ romance with fellow inmate, Poussey (Samira Wiley). Glenn weighs in on her character’s Season 4 arc, sharing scenes with the sensational Wiley and her new role in Broadway’s “Waitress.â€? Warning: This interview includes spoilers from Season 4. What is it like for you as an actress knowing that the day after your new season drops people could have already binge

watched it? Well, it’s crazy because it’s been less of an explosion this year than other times. I think because it’s on the fourth season, the diehards are still bingeing but a lot of people are enjoying it one episode at the time. In the past, it’s been like a gunshot, where everyone’s seen the show the next day and asking about the new season already. It’s been slow and steady this time. It’s nice. We ďŹ nally get a Soso backstory episode this season. Were you excited

when you found out? Any time you get more material for a character it’s exciting because it’s another clue as to who they are. With television, the possibilities are endless, and then there’s the fact that we don’t know specifically what she’s done [to go to jail] yet, that’s exciting, too. There’s the theme this season of characters discovering their own racist tendencies, and Soso was one of the most surpris-

GETTY IMAGES

Let’s talk about Poussey and Soso’s romance. Honestly, there is no one better to have a scene with or work with or be able to kiss than Samira Wiley. She’s so attractive and adorable and fun to play off of. And selfishly, for me, the past two seasons I haven’t had a proper scene partner — someone to listen to me and respond and respect what I say as Brook — and that can be a little hard playing. It was a game-changer for me. I felt liberated. My character gets to smile and feel loved, and you didn’t get to see that in the past two seasons. You know someone more when you see someone loving them.

Greta Gerwig pals around with a dachsund in the second segment of Todd Solondz’s “Wiener-Dog.” IFC FILMS

“Wiener-Dog” Yes, the movie with Paul Dano hanging with the undead Daniel Radcliffe is real. A24

“Swiss Army Man” Director: Daniels Stars: Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe Rating: R

Originality can be overrated. It’s safe to say there’s nothing on this earth remotely like “Swiss Army Man,” unless there are other Sundance shockers in which Daniel Radcliffe plays a farting corpse with an erection that doubles as a handy compass. But is ingenuity enough? Should we be seduced by something only because literally no one has ever put it on a screen before? Can a movie subsist on Harry Potter gas and gizmo-weens alone? But first-time feature directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — jointly known simply as “Daniels” — have much, much more up their sleeves. Paul Dano plays Hank, a suicidal sad sack who gains a new lease on life when he happens upon a stiff (Radcliffe). It’s no ordinary corpse.

Nicknamed Manny, he seems to be coming back to life, starting with a gastrointestinal apocalypse. He has other powers: Along with his aforementioned literal divining rod, he can shoot objects (usually phallic) from his mouth or be used as a jetski propelled by his explosive flatulence. Soon he can even talk. “Swiss Army Man” never lets up, never gets tired, keeps bombarding you with “what maniac thinks this stuff up?” nuttiness. But look closely and there’s a strong foundation. Daniels mash lowbrow with highbrow, rooting their scatological antics in a combination of deep feeling and even deeper existential dread. As Hank and Manny bond, their chats turn to the ridiculousness of society, manners, “Jurassic Park,” our disgusting bodies and existence itself. This is a wild ride, often as bumpy as the one Hank takes while astride a farting Manny, as he skips across the ocean like a hurled rock. But it’s going somewhere. MATT PRIGGE

Director: Todd Solondz Stars: Greta Gerwig, Ellen Burstyn Rating: R

Told in the same preciseminimalist manner of all Todd Solondz films, “Wiener-Dog” isn’t the film that turns haters. There are still copious unpleasant miseries. Over four stories connected only by a wandering dachshund, we’ll see a kid who beat cancer watch as his new dog is taken from him by evil parents. There will be a rapturous-jokey tracking shot over a long stream of dog diarrhea set to “Clair de Lune.” That’s to say nothing about a final post-epilogue moment so over-the-top nasty that all one can do is laugh. But it is a film — like Solondz’s more serene “Life During Wartime” — where the spots of genuine warmth make the darker moments — in this and all his films — seem more complex, not so easily reduced. The dog — whose repeated renaming by each new owner provides a fine running gag — meets a sad kid, a sad film professor (Danny DeVito), a sad codger

Happy Science New York 79 Franklin Street, New York, NY 10013 (TriBeCa) Bet Church St. & B’way

(Ellen Burstyn), even sad “Welcome to the Dollhouse” hero Dawn Wiener, now played by a reliably mousy Greta Gerwig. There are heaps of abuse dropped on their heads, and sometimes onto the dog’s. There are nasty swipes at things that annoy Solondz, including at some bratty film student kids. But there are also moments of tenderness. The scenes between mutt and his owners are unfailingly warm, as is nearly all of the section on Gerwig’s Dawn, with Solondz granting an ever-punished character (who he actually killed off in 2005’s “Palindromes”) a nice send-off. The kinder moments in “Wiener-Dog” don’t make his bleaker films any less bleak. But they can make you want to switch your take on Solondz to “It’s complicated.” MP

With just one swift trade, Knicks are relevant again It’s hard to imagine the Rose trade will come back and burn the Knicks. Steven Matz gets the ball for the Mets on Friday. GETTY IMAGES

Mets, Yankees weekend previews The Mets get a shot at redemption this weekend, visiting the Braves — who swept the Mets at Citi Field last weekend — while the Yankees have a chance to pile on more wins at home against the Twins. Steven Matz (7-3, 2.74 ERA) and Aaron Blair (0-4, 7.19 ERA) will match up again in Friday’s MetsBraves tilt. Matz pitched well June 18, allowing only two runs on four hits and two walks, but his bullpen couldn’t hold the 3-2 lead he left with. Jacob deGrom (3-4, 2.96 ERA) will be hoping for a bit more run support in Saturday’s game; he’s received a combined two runs of support in his last four starts. However, deGrom hasn’t been on top of his game, either (4.00 ERA in his last 18 IP). Julio Teheran (3-7, 2.66 ERA), who held the Mets to just one hit in a shutout on June 19, will take the hill for Atlanta. Mets batters have a .188 average (154 ABs) alltime against Teheran. Sunday’s series finale features Bartolo Colon (6-3, 3.00 ERA) making

his first start since taking a line drive off his thumb in the first inning against the Royals last Tuesday. Yankees — Twins Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 2.91 ERA) gets the ball Friday night, and he was masterful in Minnesota on June 17 (8 IP, seven hits, one run allowed). The change in venue might actually work against Tanaka, as he has a 4.60 ERA at home this year (seven starts). Ricky Nolasco (3-4, 4.91 ERA), who will oppose Tanaka, left with a 4-2 lead June 18 but a Yankees rally killed his chance for a win. Didi Gregorious added a trio of hits in that contest to boost his career average against Nolasco to .526 (19 ABs). Michael Pineda (3-7, 5.82 ERA) gets the start Saturday for the Bombers. He notched a season-high nine K’s in 5.1 IP last time out, and has been trending favorably this month (3.38 ERA). Sunday’s starters are expected to be Nathan Eovaldi (6-4, 5.02 ERA) and Tyler Duffey (26, 6.18 ERA). Eovaldi has put up a 9.00 ERA in his last four starts. ROBERT CRISCOLA

Phil Jackson’s trading for former league MVP Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls showed the faithful that there’s more than one way to improve a roster. The jettisoning of Jose Calderon’s hefty $7.7 million contract and the remaining three years of Robin Lopez’s deal that averages $13.5 million also showed that miracles can still happen at the Garden.  The aggressive pursuit of trying to upgrade the Knicks’ dreadful point guard situation caught the attention of many people around the league. About the only downside to this transaction is that the Knicks had to include promising second-year point guard Jerian Grant. Many within the organization felt the former Notre Dame star was primed for “the leapâ€? in his second season — especially under new head coach Jeff Hornacek’s up-tempo system. But in order to acquire a star like Rose, that was the real — and likely only — price Jackson had to pay.  New York’s angle in all of this is highly intriguing, as it showed Jackson isn’t afraid to make a splash and gamble. Rose, who is due $21.3 million, is in the final year of his deal, so it’s really a make-orbreak season for him during this one-year audition. This caveat is what makes this a low-risk and potentially high-reward move by Jackson.   Should Rose stay healthy — something he hasn’t done regularly since the 2010-11 season — and be anywhere near

Derrick Rose will be looking to revitalize his career at MSG. GETTY IMAGES

Knicks notes: - The arrival of Rose also brought along the departure of guard Tony Wroten, as the Knicks announced he was waived. - Guard Justin Holiday was also sent over to the Knicks, along with the aforementioned 2017 second-round pick. - Howard won’t be the only big-name center to be attached to Knicks rumors, as pending free-agent Joakim Noah will spark interest, as well as his Bulls teammate Pau Gasol ($7.7 million in the ďŹ nal year of his

the level of the player he showed for three-straight seasons (2009-12), then the Knicks will have a pleasant problem on their hands, deciding whether to re-sign him. But if New York gets an old Derrick Rose instead of the old Derrick Rose, they can cut bait and open up a lot more cap space.  The Knicks have just $55.1 million contributing to its active cap space, so the trade also did wonders for them financially. Losing Lopez does leave a

contract), whom the Bulls have reportedly given permission to seek employment elsewhere if the price is right. Both Chicago big men would be great ďŹ ts, as a healthy and motivated Noah would thrive in the New York market, and Gasol is very familiar with Jackson from their time together on the Lakers. - Anthony announced that he’s committed to playing for Team USA in the Olympics. He will be trying to earn his third gold medal.

void in the middle, which means the rumor mill will be spinning from now until the start of free agency, July 1. And moving that needle will be the speculation of perhaps signing Dwight Howard, who opted out of his deal with Houston and has said New York is on his short list of destinations.  The Howard talk is for another time, though, as nothing can officially be signed until July 7. The real task is whether Hornacek and Jackson can

figure out how to balance a team with two ball-dominant players (Rose and Carmelo Anthony) and a budding Kristaps Porzingis, who also needs to get enough nightly touches to ensure he continues to develop into a star.    Rose’s addition could really pay dividends if he gets back to his old ways of slashing to the hoop. Upon returning from his catastrophic knee injury, Rose was understandably timid and hesitant to attack the rim. He settled for the midrange jumper with uneven success. But the midrange is where Anthony likes to live, so if the Knicks get an attacking Rose, it’ll open up everything else for Anthony and Porzingis.   Last season, when Rose averaged 16.4 points, he improved his percentage of attempts within three feet of the basket from 26 percent to 30 percent. If he continues to ascend, the Knicks will finally have a point guard who can create for himself and others, and maybe even help the Knicks get back into postseason contention.
