PUERTO RICO BILL PASSAGE ON HOLD
1
The timing of a final Senate vote on passage of a bill to address Puerto Rico’s financial crisis remained uncertain on Wednesday as Democrats sought a debate on amendments, the No. 2 Senate Republican told reporters on Wednesday. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, speaking an hour after the bill survived a critical procedural vote, said lawmakers did not have unanimous consent to dispense with parliamentary rules and proceed quickly to passage of the legislation, two days before a key July 1 deadline for Puerto Rico to make a $2 billion debt payment. He said Democrats, including Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, were withholding their consent in hopes of pushing forward with amendments to the bill, which Republicans have not agreed to consider. REUTERS
MERKEL SEES NO CHANCE OF BRITISH U-TURN ON BREXIT

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she saw no chance that Britain might go back on its decision to leave the European Union. Speaking at the end of the first day of an EU summit, Merkel described talks with outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron as “serious” but “friendly.” She said it was not a time for sorrow or anger, but that Europe must simply deal with the situation with which it was now confronted. Merkel sees no reason to halt TTIP talks after Brexit vote “I want to say very clearly tonight that I see no way to reverse this,” Merkel said when asked about the possibility of a British U-turn on Brexit. “We all need to look at the reality of the situation. It is not the hour for wishful thinking.” REUTERS
CALIF. GETS GO-AHEAD TO VOTE ON LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA

Californians are set to decide whether to make recreational marijuana use legal, as other Western states have done, after the California secretary of state’s office said the issue could be put to voters in November. The proposed so-called Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which is supported by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom among others, would allow people to possess as much as an ounce of marijuana for private recreational use and permit personal cultivation of as many as six marijuana plants. “Today marks a fresh start for California, as we prepare to replace the costly, harmful and ineffective system of prohibition with a safe, legal and responsible adult-use marijuana system that gets it right and completely pays for itself,” initiative spokesman Jason Kinney said in a statement. A second city official has been indicted in connection with the alleged extortion of a local music production company. Federal investigators arrested Boston’s Chief of Staff of Intergovernmental Affairs Timothy Sullivan early Wednesday on a twocount indictment charging him with conspiracy and extortion, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said. Sullivan, 36, appeared in federal court hours later, and was released on $25,000 unsecured bond. His arrest follows that of Kenneth Brissette, 52, who was arrested in May in connection to the extortion case. Brissette worked as Mayor Marty Walsh’s director of tour-
ism and was indicted for allegedly extorting a company which had already contracted with a nonunion company to provide workers for a September 2014 music festival. Investigators claim that between July and September 2014, while the company was awaiting the issuance of certain permits and approvals required for its music festival, Brissette and Sullivan repeatedly advised the company that it would
But Brissette and Sullivan allegedly insisted that half of the company’s labor force consist of union members, although they ultimately agreed that eight members of Local 11 would suffice. As a result of their demands, Ortiz said, three days before the music festival the company entered into a contract with Local 11 for eight additional laborers and one foreman. Shortly thereafter, Boston issued the necessary permits.
independent ethics-training program for all of the city’s department heads. “It is a great privilege to serve in City Hall and I will not allow anyone to squander that privilege,” Walsh said. “I expect everyone to perform at the highest ethical standards. There is no room in my administration for the type of behavior that is alleged here.” Walsh said he also had outside counsel looking into how these events have been managed. “We are having a panel of experts review how things are done and help improve policies. I will not prejudge anyone’s guilt or innocence. Nor will I tolerate anything less than the highest ethical standards.” Ortiz said Wednesday’s indictment is a superseding indictment, which added two counts against Sullivan and one more count against Brissette. Sullivan’s arraignment was set for July 12.

Though the Boston music festival is not named in the indictment it is widely acknowledged to be Boston Calling. Following the news of Sullivan’s indictment, Walsh released a statement saying he was “deeply concerned about the allegations.” Walsh said he had called for an

Man gets 8 to 12 in drunken driving death of cyclist A Dorchester man who pleaded guilty to the hit-and-run death of a cyclist last year was sentenced to eight to 12 years in prison Tuesday. Gregory McCoy, 28, was speeding just after 10 p.m. on May 19, 2015, when he drove a friend’s 2012 Cadillac CTS into the back of a BMW stopped at the intersection of Norwell Street and Talbot Avenue, according the Suffolk DA’s office. Both vehicles careened into the intersection, and a cyclist waiting to cross the street — later identified as Fritz Philogene, 18 — was struck and killed. The crash also injured the 33-year-old driver of the BMW and McCoy’s passenger, the 26-year-old Quincy man who owned the Cadillac. McCoy got out of the Cadillac after the crash and fled on foot, investigators said. Cops followed a trail of blood to his Dorchester home and arrested him. McCoy pleaded guilty to manslaughter while operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a collision causing death and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury. CHRIS CAESAR

Trump in Boston draws protesters Donald Trump’s appearance at the Langham Hotel in Boston on Wednesday aimed to bring in campaign dollars for his presidential campaign. But the bombastic New York City real estate developer, poised to take the Republican presidential nomination in Cleveland next month, drew dozens of protestors, including Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley. “I don’t know how someone can claim to want to make America great again when the very people who have made America he vilifies — immigrants, people of color, women, the LGBT community, workers,” Pressley said. While national polls have shown Trump struggling in Republican-voting states such as Utah,

What comes first, the name or the restaurant? Earlier this month, an unnamed cafĂŠ opened in East Cambridge in the space once occupied by Cafe Kiraz, a popular neighborhood spot that shuttered last spring. Following Twitter leads, Metro recently decided to drop by to see if they had decided what to call themselves. Turns out, they hadn’t. The awning above the storefront was still blank, the only signage was an easel chalkboard with menu items near the door. Inside, owner Katerina Danilova huddled with friends and family, trying to narrow down name options. Danilova wanted to make a decision in half an hour, by 6 p.m. “[Our customers] say, ‘What are you guys called? When are you guys going to have a name?â€? Danilova said. “We told them by [Thursday] we’ll come up with a name.â€? Danilova said opening the cafĂŠ was a nine-month process, and that their soft open was on June 1. So why the hold on the name, if they’ve been open for almost three weeks and were preparing to open for about 36? “It’s very hard to come up with the right name,â€? Danilova said. “I thought, it’s better to have no name than a bad name.â€? Danilova’s friends debated possible titles over slices of the cafÊ’s mozzarella pizza and glasses of mint lemonade. Corner, Taste and Katya’s seemed to be in the lead (the latter

a diminutive form of the owner’s name).   “Corner is not bad,â€? said Igor Staribinets, a friend who lives in Newton. “Maybe it should be ‘Corner something,’ maybe just one word is not enough, they won’t understand what this is.â€? “The heart of this cafĂŠ and this idea is Katya, — I’ve known her for a long time — so I think it should be called Katya’s,â€? said Andras Szenes, an old friend who met Katya in Cambridge but moved to Europe 16 years ago. “She feels uneasy about having her name up thereâ€? The cooks — Peter Danilov, Katerina’s son; and Jose Varon, a new hire — prepared more pizzas behind the counter. “People always ask me, ‘What’s the name? What’s the name gonna be?’ I kind of say, I don’t know, I’m here for the cooking, here for the food,â€? Varon said. “I’d even be OK with a cafĂŠ no-name. ‌ I think whatever we call it the food will speak for itself.â€? While Danilova said they’re still finalizing the menu, the day we came by we tried caprese tartines, buffalo mozzarella pizza, chicken salad cups and frozen yogurt. CafĂŠ staples — tea, coffee and cake — were all here, too. As for the name? Corner certainly seemed to have momentum, but 6 p.m. came and went and only one thing had been decided: The cafÊ’s subtitle would be “Urban Cafe.â€? “Maybe it’ll be like choosing the pope,â€? Danilova said. “When we decide, we’ll let white smoke out of the chimney.â€?

North American leaders vow to boost trade despite threats The three nations are member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has vowed to renegotiate or scrap if he wins November’s election. Canada, the United States and Mexico on Wednesday vowed to deepen their economic ties, pushing back against anti-free-trade sentiment that has shifted politi-
cal debate in the United States and Europe. President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Peña Nieto, meeting at a “Three Amigos” summit in Ottawa, said an efficient North American economy was vital for creating goodpaying, middle-class jobs. “We will build upon this strong trilateral economic relationship, and further facilitate trade among our three countries, and improve the networks that allow us to produce products and services together,” they said in a statement. Trump says free trade
has been disastrous, costing thousands of U.S. jobs and depressing wages. Similar complaints were heard in Britain ahead of a surprise referendum vote last week to leave the European Union and its free trade area. Obama and Peña Nieto stressed the importance of the relationship between the United States and Mexico, which has come under strain amid heated U.S. campaign rhetoric, and Obama invited the Mexican leader for a last visit to Washington before Obama’s term ends in January.

A treatment that combines a drug and a diagnostic device could get reviewed on different timelines.

Islamic State prime suspect after suicide bombers kill 42 at airport in Istanbul The attack on Europe’s thirdbusiest airport was the deadliest in a series of suicide bombings this year in Turkey, part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State and struggling to contain spillover from neighboring Syria’s war. Turkish investigators pored over video footage and witness statements on Wednesday after three suspected Islamic State suicide bombers opened fire and blew themselves up in Istanbul’s main airport, killing 42 people and wounding 239. President Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning
point in the global fight against terrorism, which he said had “no regard for faith or values. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned it in separate phone calls with Erdogan, his office said. Five Saudis and two Iraqis were among the dead, a Turkish official said. Citizens from China, Jordan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Ukraine were also among the 13 foreigners killed. One attacker opened fire in the departures hall with an automatic rifle, sending passengers diving for cover and trying to flee, before all three blew themselves up in or around the arrivals hall a floor below, witnesses and officials said. Video footage showed one of the attackers in-

The Dogan news agency said autopsies on the three bombers, whose torsos were ripped apart, had been completed and that they may have been foreign
nationals, without citing its sources. Broken ceiling panels littered the curb outside the arrivals section of the international terminal. Plates of glass had shattered, exposing the inside of the building, and electric cables dangled from the ceiling. Cleanup crews swept up debris and armed police patrolled as flights resumed. REUTERS

Facebook’s political influence placed under a microscope As the presidential campaign heats up, Facebook Inc. is going out of its way to show its neutrality — an increasingly urgent matter for the social network as evidence of its power continues to emerge. Recent studies have shown the site has extraordinary influence. According to research scheduled to be published in August in the Journal of Communication, when people tagged their friends on Facebook in voting reminders, turnout increased by 15 to 24 percent. During presidential primary elections this year, a Facebook reminder that informed people when their state’s voter registration deadline was approaching and provided a link helped produce a surge of nearly 650,000 new voter registrations in California alone, ac-

cording to Secretary of State Alex Padilla. In the United Kingdom, a Facebook reminder days before the deadline to register to vote on whether the country should exit the European Union led to 186,000 people registering online to vote, according to the government. “Generally, getting people out to vote could
swing a national election,” said Katherine Haenschen, a doctoral student at the University of Texas, Austin and author of the upcoming Journal of Communications study. Facebook is eager to show that its political involvement is limited to seemingly neutral activities such as encouraging voting. The company this week released some
of the guidelines that govern its all-important News Feed — the place most people see postings on Facebook — and has pushed back hard against recent allegations of political bias in its “Trending Topics” module. At the same time Facebook has embraced its role as a “new town hall” for politics, hosting events and helping candidates more effectively leverage their platforms, said Katie Harbath, Facebook’s global politics and government outreach director Her team helps candidates by answering their questions and providing advice, such as how to use Facebook Live and how to increase engagement on their pages. Still, concerns about Facebook’s role in shaping political attitudes are unlikely to abate anytime soon. REUTERS

BRIEF ACLU files lawsuit over US anti-hacking law The American Civil Liberties Union said it filed a lawsuit in federal court on Wednesday challenging the constitutionality of an anti-hacking law, arguing it prevents academics and others from collecting data to investigate whether online algorithms may be discriminatory. The lawsuit claims the Computer Fraud and Abuse

It was brought by the ACLU on behalf of a group of university professors and First Look Media, which publishes the news site The Intercept, against Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Samuel L. Jackson isn’t shocked that young people may not have seen a Tarzan movie. The vine-swinger used to be a hot commodity, birthing numerous film franchises through the ’20s and the ’60s. After that, Tarzan thinned out, with only a few titles (including Disney’s take from 1999) over the past few decades. That may be due to the problematic nature of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original books, which teem with casual racism. The new “The Legend of Tarzan” tries to fix this. For one thing, it
features a strong black character — Jackson’s George Washington Williams, loosely based on the real-life 19th-century Renaissance man — as one of the heroes aiding Alexander Skarsgard’s towering, usually shirtless Tarzan. The character you play is based on a real person. Tell us about him. He has a lot of guilt about the part he played in fighting in the Indian Wars, then going to Mexico and becoming a freedom fighter of sorts. He was a bit of a rogue. He claimed to be a lot of things he wasn’t. But he still had an impressive life. He wrote an interesting treatise on being black in America. Very, very interesting guy. And he never made it back here from Europe. That’s why he’s buried in Blackpool [England], I guess.

It’s crazy. A country becoming more diverse doesn’t seem like a bad thing. Is that a problem or is that progress? Making America great again — I’m trying to figure out when that actually was. Was it the ’50s? The ’60s? It can’t be the ’60s, because that’s when the revolution started. So it must be between the ’50s and the ’30s.
You’ve spent a lot of time working in England. Have you gotten a sense of how that came to pass? It’s hard to field that, because the country is so multicultural. When you’re walking around, there’s a

Do you get in trouble for speaking your mind on social media? People will vilify you online. But I don’t care. I manage my own Twitter account. I laugh at people who say nasty things to me. Sometimes I just sic my Twitter followers on them. That’s the easy way. You have a lot of followers. Donald Trump only has 4 million more. If I combined all mine with my Weibo followers from China, I could probably kick his ass. Some actors talk about not wanting to watch themselves onscreen. But you like it. That is so much bulls—. Do you really believe that? Do you really believe the majority of actors who say, “I don’t love watching myself on screen” wouldn’t do something else?

We live in a world of remakes and sequels and reboots, so it wouldn’t be offside for the movies’ most famous populist to try for another “E.T.” But Spielberg hasn’t piggybacked on a past career peak. Broad setup aside, “The BFG” is a very different beast — an outlier amongst both modern blockbusters and Spielberg’s own career. It’s the strangest, most stripped-down film he’s ever made, even considering it’s a CGI-fest with cutting edge tech that turns one of the world’s finest thespians into a motion-capture behemoth. That person is Mark Rylance, the Oscar-winner of Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” who plays a big, friendly giant. Based on a Road Dahl children’s classic that’s only semi-grim, it has him nick young Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) from a London orphanage, whisking her away

to a far-off realm ruled by even-bigger colossi, who like to feast upon tiny humans. But BFG doesn’t play like that, and he slowly warms to her, and the two, as in the book, spend much of the film just chatting. Dahl’s book wouldn’t seem a fit for Spielberg, the king of whirligig thingamajigs. Perhaps it isn’t. And yet “The BFG” appeals to Spielberg’s other major asset: his peerless capacity for deep feeling and unfailing empathy. Whatever happens in “The BFG,” it’s all anchored by two lonely people forging a profound connection. Barnhill aside, it’s all digital, fake. Yet it feels powerfully and unmistakably human. Well, at least it’s not another origin story. “The Legend of Tarzan” is mainly notable for what it’s not, namely another lugubrious, lumbering introduction, this time to the why of its ripped vine-swinger with an aversion to clothes that aren’t a tattered loincloth. Instead it’s just a random adventure, clocking in under two hours, that throws us into what could be the fourth or fifth entry in a series. And yet who in 2016 remembers Tarzan except as a vague concept? Like the Lone Ranger, he’s a cultural commodity that’s been trampled by history, largely absent from the modern screen. He’s one figure who might need a splashy introduction. Reviving him is a fool’s errand, and “The Legend of Tarzan” buckles under the strain while trying to give us a rip-roaring romp. Ostensibly it’s a revisionist reboot, starting after Tarzan (the massively tall Alexander Skarsgard) has
In “The Purge: Election Year,” the worst thing happens that could happen in a “Purge” movie: The audience whoops and cheers. That may sound like a silly thing to say about a trashy exploitation grinder released into the belly of the multiplex. The audience is supposed to whoop and cheer. But not at these films. The first two “Purges” were secretly smart: sly satires delivering blunt force trauma — whole hog lefty vigilante entries that decried not only participants in an annual legal slaughterfest, but those who would kill them, too, thus stooping to their level. Not the third one. Though “Election Year” keeps up appearances as savage social critique, it sometimes says, “Eff this,” and prods us into cheering on murder with a big, satisfied smile on our face. Set two years after the second, it relocates once again, this time to D.C., where Senator Roane, a maverick legislator played by Elizabeth Mitchell, is

left the thickets of the Congo to assume his role in stuffy English society. He’s lured back through a painfully convoluted international ruse. But we’re rarely allowed to sit back and munch on our popcorn. Every time “Tarzan” gets into a groove, viewers are hurled back into an awkwardly timed flashback to fill them in on the backstory they may not have Googled beforehand. Stuttering through a slight adventure it keeps interrupting, it bogs itself down further by tackling an old text that’s easily tagged as “problematic.” To make a woke “Tarzan” might involve making something that’s not “Tarzan.” MP

running for president with the promise to cancel the purge. Her political adversaries thus unleash their armed forces to make her one of the holiday’s many new casualties. The third finds a young franchise already running out of ideas. It also finally succumbs to a problem planted in the second one, like a time-delayed poison: Frank Grillo’s efficient Barnes, once a savior, is now an anonymous badass, given the go to stage crowd-pleasing mayhem on the bad guys, while Roane implores everyone else to do the opposite. Then again, that “Election Year” is a mere Cro-Magnon exploitation movie isn’t necessarily a bad thing. MP

To aggregate songs that hold a certain meaning and to be able to impart your personal emotions to the world via a collection is super powerful. I think it gives people who can’t put out an album the ability to create their own version of a story through a playlist of songs. RACHEL RACZKA

Boom! Clap! The Boston Pops light up the night — again — with Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato. LINDA CLARKE
Boston Pops Orchestra conductor Keith Lockhart is no stranger to collaborating with big stars. Aerosmith? No sweat. Sir Elton John? Bring it on. And this year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular gets the A-List treatment as pop megastars Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas join country veterans Little Big Town to herald the city’s Fourth of July celebrations. Still, the real star of the night has never appeared on the top 40. Before the fireworks take center stage, Lockhart gives us the scoop on the Fourth’s best party. How familiar were you with Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas before you set about rehearsals? I’m not very familiar with Demi and Nick’s
music, sic but I know they’re wildly popular. I’m looking forward to getting to know their music better and working with them on the Esplanade. Nick Jonas is quite the heartthrob; perhaps it will be a “scream fest.” Do you expect a younger audience flocking to the Hatch Shell this year? This year, I imagine there’s a whole new young audience across the state lobbying their parents to take them the concert, and we think that’s great. It is always a concert with a little something for everyone, though. I love that all generations and ages can come together to celebrate Independence Day with the Pops. The Fourth’s point, of course, is celebrating liberty. Does too much
celebrity detract from that? The Boston Pops is [called] “America’s Orchestra,” so patriotism is baked into the core of the organization. We tap into the national identity by reminding listeners about the musical heritage we share. It’s such a pleasure to work with celebrities like Demi and Nick because they come with a whole new audience, and an enthusiasm to honor our country in a big way by performing on a grand scale with the Pops. Demi attended the concert a few years ago on the lawn, so she knows how exciting it is to be there, on stage or in the audience. Can even the biggest pop star’s songs compete with the grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”?
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is free! Sunday (rehearsal, no fireworks): Gates open at 5 p.m.; concert begins at 8:30 p.m. Monday: Gates open at 9 a.m.; concert begins at 8:30 p.m. DCR Hatch Shell 47 David G. Mugar Way, Boston july4th.org
The fact that the “1812 Overture” is associated with July Fourth is a phenomenon that arose from Esplanade concerts dating back to the 1970s. Despite having led this concert over 20 times,
it’s still a thrill to bring the orchestra to the exciting finale with real exploding canons setting the stage for a phenomenal fireworks show over the Charles River. I’ve had the pleasure of leading thousands of concerts, and still nothing quite compares to this. Finally, for the public attending, can you give us your tips on how to enjoy the concert best? I’ve never had the pleasure of watching the Pops on the Esplanade, but from what I hear I’d recommend getting there early for a good spot, bring plenty of sunscreen and most of all, have fun. We get a rush from playing this concert, and it is the energy of the audience that creates this spark.

We talked with Noah Britton, Ethan Finlan, Jack Hanke and New Michael Ingemi about their film, their tour and wanting the same treatment as Jerry Seinfeld. Was there ever any reluctance to do the movie, from any of you? New Michael: Yeah, there still is. Ethan: It’s a good film, it’s just that the focus is not our comedy, and that’s OK.
Noah: The process of filming itself was weird, because, obviously you’re letting a total stranger into a very, very private part of your life. I think it’s a good film. It’s not as funny as our live show, so we recommend anyone who saw the movie, if you want to see the real us, come see us on tour.
Yes, I also wanted to make sure we talked about your tour. New Michael: The purpose of the tour isn’t to promote our documentary. We need to make that clear …
Noah: True. The purpose of the tour is for us to do what we do, which is be funny. All our shows will end with a Q&A, so people who want to know about autism and stuff like that can come and ask us questions … Most of the show will not reference autism at all — it will just be funny. At your shows, you guys sell T-shirts, and one of them says “I don’t want your pity.” Could you elaborate on what that means? Noah: We don’t want people to come out of pity. We don’t want
people to come and say, “Oh, it’s so courageous.” We had someone at the most recent screening of the movie who was saying, “Oh, I want to congratulate you all on being so courageous,” and I was like, “If you were watching Jerry Seinfeld you wouldn’t say it was courageous, you’d either say it was funny or not funny,” and that’s the extent to which we want to hear feedback. Jack: We want fame, money, glory and pity, in that order. Like, once we’ve gotten the first three, we can get pity — at that point, we’ll take it.

A stone’s throw from the Regal Fenway Theaters, a quick order of the Herc (and some extra Greek fries, topped with oregano and grated cheese and a side of tzatziki for dipping) happily provides the same prefilm food coma satisfaction as a once beloved carnitas burrito with extra guac. The Sounds of Silents: “Metropolis” Fritz Lang’s legendary 1927 film “Metropolis” is a visually stunning early science fiction masterpiece — so captivating and strange, even in today’s CGI-addled cinematic milieu, that it’s almost easy to miss that fact that its
(long) narrative amounts to an impassioned plea for socialism. The ingenious local trio Alloy Orchestra will perform a live soundtrack, enhancing the experience even further. July 6-7, 7 p.m. Coolidge Corner Theater 290 Harvard St., Brookline $23, coolidge.org
“Jaws”
Much imitated, but never quite duplicated, Steven Speilberg’s
“Jaws” became the quintessential summer blockbuster when it was released in 1975. The psychoanalytic thinker Slavoj Zizek has suggested that the shark can represent any threat to society, and the film’s power lies in this symbolic blankness. Perhaps, but, to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a shark is just a shark. July 4, noon and 8 p.m. Brattle Theater 40 Brattle St., Cambridge $9-$11, brattlefilm.org
You never know quite what you’ll get at this evening of confessional comedy, but the premise is simple enough: adults reading from their adolescent diaries, and other artifacts of awkward love, silly angst and questionable priorities. The performers are a mix of professionals and amateurs, but when it comes to the struggles of the teenage years, we’re all equally embarrassing. July 10 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Oberon 2 Arrow St., Cambridge $15, americanrepertorytheater.org

18 THINGS TO DO The best national parks to see this summer — happy birthday, National Parks Service!
With the centennial of the National Park Service this summer, 2016 is the year to stay local and explore America. Plan a trip for Aug. 2528 when park entrance fees are waived all day in honor of Founder’s Day, the National Park Service’s birthday.
The greatest outdoors
Grand Teton National Park Grand Teton, the highest peak in the rugged Teton Range, rises 13,775 feet above the Jackson Hole valley floor in Wyoming. Grand Teton National Park’s alpine terrain, including a dozen small glaciers, the Snake River, various streams and numerous crystalline lakes like the 15-mile-long Jackson Lake, provides visitors a welcome reprieve from
Zion National Park
Zion National Park In the Southwest, the hot summer weather is perfect for hiking the river at the base of Utah’s Zion National Park. The trail through the upper canyon, known as The Narrows, is literally the river — trekkers walk, wade and swim through the 16-mile route, penned in on both sides by 2,000-foot vertical sandstone walls. The hike is strenuous but well worth the effort for the unique experience and awe-inspiring scenery. Insider Tip: The Utah Symphony partnered with the Utah Office of Tourism to offer free concerts at the state’s five national parks in mid-August. The symphony will perform at Zion on Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at the O.C. Tanner Amphitheatre, located just outside the south entry gate in Springdale.

the heat of summer. Although Grand Teton is only 10 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, it remains remarkably less crowded. Insider Tip: The six campgrounds in the
park are first-come, first-serve. Steer clear during peak times or if you have the experience (and bear-proof canisters), consider backcountry camping. Alternatively, Grand Teton has several excel-
lent lodging facilities ranging from cabins to resort hotels located inside the park.
Crater Lake National Park For pure visual splendor, it’s hard to beat Crater Lake’s brilliant blue water and 2,000foot cliffs. The five-mile lake is the clearest in the U.S., and Oregon’s pristine air offers unobstructed views of up to 100 miles. The world-class hiking keeps active visitors occupied with more than 100 miles of trails; don’t miss the 2.5-mile gradual walk up the Mount Scott Trail, the park’s high point. Insider Tip: From July to mid-September, park rangers lead a daily boat tour on Crater Lake. The view from the water is just as dazzling as from the road or trail.
Acadia National Park It may be one of the smaller national parks, but Acadia has an amazingly diverse landscape, from sandy beaches to hardwood forests to granite peaks. The park encompasses most of Mount Desert Island and some of the smaller surrounding islands. The rugged, rocky coastline has become synonymous with summertime in Maine — an absolute must-visit on the Atlantic coast.
Insider Tip: Cycling is not permitted on any of the park trails, and the scenic Park Loop Road — the main artery for cars — is generally too congested for bike traffic. Instead, ride some (or all) of the 45 miles of carriage roads that wind through the heart of the park. Originally built between 1915 and 1933 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., the crushedrock surface paths are ideal for biking.
Kenai Fjords National Park Located 2.5 hours from Anchorage on the stunning Kenai Peninsula, Kenai Fjords National Park is an Ice Age dreamscape: Think pristine water, giant icebergs and seemingly endless glaciers. In the summer, long daylight hours and mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s are ideal conditions to try the park’s many adventurous activities like kayaking, hiking and stand-up paddleboarding. For those interested in a little less action, “flightseeing” by plane is Alaska’s quintessential way to take in the scenery, or try a boat cruise among the icebergs. Insider Tip: The Alaskan wilderness is about as wild as it gets; in fact, the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park accessible by road is Exit Glacier. While breathtaking in its
own right (and most people’s only chance to come face-to-face-with a glacier), there is much more to see and do in Kenai Fjords. Hire an outfitter to tap into the park’s abundant offerings.
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks Set in the shadow of 14,505-foot Mount Whitney (the highest summit in the contiguous United States), California’s Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are actually two parks administered as one. The combined park is a backpacker’s dream, with more than 850 miles of remote trails through extensive glacial canyons and old-growth forests, home to giant sequoia trees standing over 250 feet tall. Summer temperatures in the southern Sierra Nevada foothills often exceed 100 degrees, but remain pleasant in the sequoia groves where they rarely top 90. Insider Tip: General Sherman Tree, located at the north end of Giant Forest, is the world’s largest tree at 274.9 feet tall and 78.5 feet in circumference and accessible by an easy half-mile trail.
Shenandoah National Park Located just 75 miles from Washington D.C., Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is a popular fall foliage destination. But the park is an equally viable escape in the summer, when the Blue Ridge Mountains keep the temperatures as much as 10 degrees cooler than in the valley. And unlike in the fall, this is not the time to cruise along scenic Skyline Drive in your car. Get out and hike to one of the park’s dozen waterfalls, or camp under an open sky — almost all of Shenandoah’s 196,000 gorgeous acres are open to backcountry camping. Insider Tip: Shenandoah has more than 500 miles of trails. Check out the National Park Foundation’s free Owner’s Guide, available online.

The 10 most valuable Sox players in 2016 Who are the most important pieces to the Red Sox’ success this season? RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
With the 2016 season now three full months in, we figured it was a good time to look at which performers have been the most valuable to the Red Sox so far. It’s been an upand-down campaign for most players, but there are a few that have been strong since April. Here are the top 10 most valuable players for the Red Sox to this point in the year.
1
Xander Bogaerts
No question Bogaerts has been the most valuable player on the team to this point. His defense at shortstop is miles from what it was a few years ago and he’s batting .343, second in the AL.
2David Ortiz
Even at 40 years old, Ortiz is still performing — and performing at a higher level than nearly everyone expected heading into the season. The DH is batting .335 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs.
Wright 3Steven
Bradley Jr. 7Jackie
When spring training began, Wright wasn’t even a sure bet to make the team, but three months into the season he’s been the team’s best pitcher and has a 2.18 ERA, which is the best in the American League.
It’s been an up-and-down year for Bradley Jr., with the highest point being his 29-game hit streak. That flurry of offense saw him go from batting ninth to now being right in the middle of the Red Sox’ lineup.
4
Dustin Pedroia
Perhaps the most underrated player on the team this season, Pedroia is quietly putting together a very strong season. The second baseman is batting .305 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
5Mookie Betts
Betts has been solid at the top of the Red Sox’ order and has played a good right field as well. Betts is hitting .289 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. He’s also projected to be an AL All-Star.
6Craig Kimbrel
After a rocky start, Kimbrel has certainly settled down and been what the Red Sox were looking for in the back end of their bullpen. The closer has a 1-3 record 16 saves and a 2.61 ERA, but opponents are batting just .157 against him.
8David Price
Although Price hasn’t been the ace the Red Sox hoped for when they signed him for big money in the offseason, he has shown signs of getting back to an elite level. His dominance was on display in four games this season in which he registered double-digit strikeouts.
9Rick Porcello
After a horrid 2015 season, Porcello has turned it around this season and has been a solid No. 3 starter. Moving forward, he may be asked to elevate his game and make up for some of the deficiencies in the rotation.
10Travis Shaw
While Shaw has struggled a bit of late, he did get off to a great start and was able to win the third base job during the spring. He’s currently batting .267 with 39 RBIs.
Sox back at Fenway The Red Sox (42-36) return to Fenway Park on Friday for a lengthy homestand. They’ll take on the Angels this weekend and will host the Rangers in a Fourth of July matinee. Boston is reeling, and is now five full games behind the Orioles for first place in the AL East. GETTY IMAGES

HAVE YOU HAD A STROKE?
Prince Fielder, 1B, Texas Rangers Fielder deserves a ton of credit for coming back from a careerthreatening neck injury and providing a useful fantasy season in 2015. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to build on that success this year. He’s on pace for career-worst numbers pretty much across the board, and there doesn’t seem to be much bad luck involved; almost every conceivable metric we have is pointing to a decline in skill. Fielder is making less contact, hitting the ball with less authority, walking less, struggling to catch up to fastballs … you name it. June has been his best month by far, and he still hasn’t performed well enough to be worth a roster spot in most leagues. Fielder is 32 and has a body type notorious for aging poorly. As we’ve seen before with players like Mo Vaughn, Ryan Howard, and Fielder’s own father, Cecil, the decline is swift

ances over the first two months of the season. As a result, he was among the worst players in baseball by most measures. His peripherals didn’t really seem to support those results, however, and recent returns have been encouraging. Archer has had a strange season. He’s retained the gaudy strikeout totals that made him a breakout star in 2015, but when batters have connected, they’ve done so emphatically. Archer’s home run rate and BABIP were both through the roof in the season’s first several weeks, and it wasn’t entirely bad luck. Both the eye test and the numbers plainly showed that Archer was getting hit hard. He was also struggling to limit walks. In his last few starts, he’s done a better job of keeping the ball in the yard and not handing out free passes. While his overall numbers are still pretty ugly, Archer does appear to be making progress on resolving whatever mechanical issues he was having early on. BUY/HOLD
