PUERTO RICO BILL PASSAGE ON HOLD
1
The timing of a final Senate vote on passage of a bill to address Puerto Rico’s financial crisis remained uncertain on Wednesday as Democrats sought a debate on amendments, the No. 2 Senate Republican told reporters on Wednesday. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, speaking an hour after the bill survived a critical procedural vote, said lawmakers did not have unanimous consent to dispense with parliamentary rules and proceed quickly to passage of the legislation, two days before a key July 1 deadline for Puerto Rico to make a $2 billion debt payment. He said Democrats, including Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, were withholding their consent in hopes of pushing forward with amendments to the bill, which Republicans have not agreed to consider. REUTERS
MERKEL SEES NO CHANCE OF BRITISH U-TURN ON BREXIT

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she saw no chance that Britain might go back on its decision to leave the European Union. Speaking at the end of the first day of an EU summit, Merkel described talks with outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron as “serious” but “friendly.” She said it was not a time for sorrow or anger, but that Europe must simply deal with the situation with which it was now confronted. Merkel sees no reason to halt TTIP talks after Brexit vote “I want to say very clearly tonight that I see no way to reverse this,” Merkel said when asked about the possibility of a British U-turn on Brexit. “We all need to look at the reality of the situation. It is not the hour for wishful thinking.” REUTERS
CALIF. GETS GO-AHEAD TO VOTE ON LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA

Californians are set to decide whether to make recreational marijuana use legal, as other Western states have done, after the California secretary of state’s office said the issue could be put to voters in November. The proposed so-called Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which is supported by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom among others, would allow people to possess as much as an ounce of marijuana for private recreational use and permit personal cultivation of as many as six marijuana plants. “Today marks a fresh start for California, as we prepare to replace the costly, harmful and ineffective system of prohibition with a safe, legal and responsible adult-use marijuana system that gets it right and completely pays for itself,” initiative spokesman Jason Kinney said in a statement. New center on Staten Island opens to tackle domestic violence The site is the fifth help center in the city and will offer services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, elder abuse and sex trafficking. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
In a response to the ongoing growth of domestic violence cases in Staten Island, one new center has opened its doors in hopes of becoming the beacon of light for individuals going through dark times and who are looking to reclaim control of their lives. First lady Chirlane McCray cut the ribbon and officially opened the Staten Island Family Justice Center on Wednesday, making it the fifth help center in the city and ensuring that victims and survivors of domestic violence, elder abuse and sex trafficking have a place to go and get help in every borough. The first justice center opened up in Brooklyn over a decade ago and each center offers multilingual services to victims and survivors including safety and legal assistance. According to officials, the Staten Island center, located at 126 Stuyvesant Place, comes at a crucial time when the borough is facing an increase in domestic violence cases. Between 2010 and 2014 there has been a 64 percent increase in domestic violence victims — the highest increase of any other borough. “Staten Island’s growing rate of domestic vio-

lence is something that we should all be concerned of, and clearly we are, because it goes to the true measure of the health of our community and the city if our citizens can’t and don’t feel safe in their own homes,” said Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon. The first lady took a tour of the 10,000-squarefoot center — which is expected to receive an estimated 3,000 client visits in the first year — on Wednesday along with city officials and center representatives. The site is based on the nationwide model, which means that through one visit victims are able to meet with a prosecutor; receive legal advice on topics such as immigration, divorce or orders of protection; learn about job opportunities and also apply for emergency housing. All these services are offered to individuals in a comfortable and private environment, while children are being taken care of in a playroom onsite. “The real beauty of this building goes much deeper than its walls and its windows, the beauty is rooted in the work that is being done here,” McCray said. “Family justice centers are exactly what their names suggest, one central place where
Survivor’s story During Wednesday’s tour, McCray was also joined by Anastasia Martin, a domestic violence survivor who first sought out help last year at the Brooklyn Family Justice Center. “I am happy for the people who live in Staten Island, that they have this center available for them and I hope people won’t be ashamed or even scared to look for help,” Martin said. “I really don’t want other women to go through what I was going through especially when you have so many questions and so many fears.” Martin moved to New York City from Russia about six years ago and married a man she had met at her church who shortly after began to restrict her and would give her orders. According to McCray, Martin began to fear her husband and decided to turn to her local pastor for help. However,

instead of helping, the pastor took her husband’s side and began to blame Martin. The Brooklyn resident then decided to visit her borough’s family justice center and with the support she received was able to get her husband out of her life. Martin is now going back to school and pursuing a career in social justice. She is sharing her story in hopes of getting other women and men to build up the courage to seek help. “Don’t be afraid, they’re people that are going to listen to you, they’re not going to judge you, they’re going to help you,” Martin said about advice she would give other victims. “It’s really great to know that somebody else is understanding about what is going on with you, what is going on in life.” Martin added that she wanted to thank all the people who supported her at the center and helped her moved forward.

Espaillat claims victory in Harlem race to replace Rangel; Wright won’t concede Adriano Espaillat, once an illegal immigrant, would be the first DominicanAmerican member of Congress. Dominican-born Adriano Espaillat claimed victory on Tuesday in the U.S. congressional race to succeed longtime Representative Charles Rangel, signaling change in the historically black neighborhood of Harlem that has grown increasingly Hispanic. Nine Democrats ran in the primary to select the party’s candidate for November’s general election. In a district where Democratic voters heavily outnumber Republicans, Tuesday’s winner will have a virtual lock on taking Rangel’s vacated seat in the House of Representatives. the first Dominican-American member of Congress. A state senator, Espaillat, held a 3-point lead on state Assemblyman Keith Wright, an African-American who was endorsed by Rangel and benefited from the political machine of a man who held the job for 46 years. With 98 percent of polling places reporting, Espaillat had 36.7 percent of the vote compared with 33.7 percent for Wright, a
difference of nearly 1,300 votes. “The voters of the 13th congressional district made history tonight,” Espaillat, 61, said in a victory speech. “The voters ... elected a country boy from Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic,” he said, mixing Spanish and English. Wright, however, refused to concede, telling supporters: “No candidate
can declare victory tonight, not until every vote is counted.” The district is dominated by Harlem, long a leading cultural center, home to black political and commercial life, and an incubator for jazz. Harlem notably has grown more white with gentrification, but it also has become more Hispanic. Besides Harlem, the district also includes predominantly Latino neigh-
borhoods further to the north where Espaillat has his base. Rangel, 86, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, won his first congressional election in 1970, and since then Harlem voters routinely returned him to office every two years, even after his 2010 censure for ethics violations. Espaillat tried and failed to unseat Rangel in 2012 and 2014 prima-
ry elections. Gentrification emerged as a leading issue in the campaign, as a decade-long influx of affluent people, many of them white, has transformed Harlem’s once-blighted blocks of 19th century brownstone town houses. Change has muted the distinctive black identity of the area, the home of the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club and other monuments of AfricanAmerican culture. Once an upscale Dutch neighborhood named after the city near Amsterdam, Harlem drew African-Americans during the northward migration of former slaves in the late 19th Century and again between the world wars. In decades past, affluent New Yorkers avoided venturing too far north, or “uptown.” But soaring property values have turned Harlem into one of New York’s trendiest real estate markets. REUTERS
Terminal evacuated at JFK Airport over suspicious package
JFK airport GETTY IMAGES
Police temporarily evacuated a terminal at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday as they investigated a report of a suspicious package, authorities said. A Homeland Security K-9 unit was checking into an unattended bag at about 8:30 a.m. in the departure area of Terminal Five, said Joe Pen-
tangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the airport. Pentangelo said the bomb squad had responded and roadways to the area were temporarily closed. The package was cleared and the terminal resumed normal operations, the spokesman said.
The evacuation came a day after suicide bombers blew themselves up at the main airport in Istanbul, Turkey, killing at least 41 people and injuring hundreds. After the attack, the Port Authority deployed armed, high-visibility patrols at the three main airports in the New York metropolitan region. REUTERS

Three indicted in Gabay murder The shooting happened between opposing gangs in the middle of a crowded street before the West Indian Day Parade. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Authorities have charged three men for the murder of Carey Gabay, an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who was shot last year as he walked down a Brooklyn street after attending a celebration. Gabay, 43, was shot in the head on Sept. 7, 2015 in front of the Ebbets Field Houses in Crown Heights while hundreds of people celebrated J’ouvert, a traditional festival held before the annual West Indian American Day Parade. He later died at the hospital on Sept. 15. Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced on Wednesday that Micah Alleyne, 24, of Queens; and Brooklyn residents Tyshawn Crawford, 21, and Keith Luncheon, 24 were variously charged in a 16-count indictment with murder, criminal possession of a weapon

Around 4:53 p.m. on Tuesday, police responded to 2401 Nostrand Ave. after an unknown individual threw a rock through the rear driver’s side window of a Chrysler van traveling north on Nostrand, police said. The suspect shouted an anti-Semitic statement before throwing the rock, cops said. The suspect was described as black, about 14 years old, 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds with short black hair. and reckless endangerment. A fourth individual — 25-year-old Stanley Elianor of Brooklyn — was arraigned last October on an indictment charging him with criminal possession of a weapon. “These defendants are charged with creating a killing field in a crowd of innocent people, showing depraved indifference to human life and causing the death of Carey Gabay, who used his Harvard education and commitment to public service to improve the lives of others,” Thompson said. “This indictment shows the importance of our efforts to put an end to gang-related gun violence that places innocent lives in the crossfire.” According to prosecutors, the incident took place in the early hours of Sept. 7, 2015 during which the patio and street in front of the Ebbets Field Houses were filled with people celebrating. The housing project’s large patio has been known to be controlled by the Folk Nation street gang, which has been in a longtime battle with the 8-Trey division of the Crips gang, authorities said. Investigators were able to identify Micah Alleyne — an alleged Folk Nation member — on a surveillance video where he can be seen running back into the building from the patio while holding a gun. He was arrested on May 26 and allegedly admitted he was on the patio and did fire his gun.
Tyshawn Crawford — an alleged member of Hoodstarz, a gang affiliated with Folk Nation — was also caught on video on the street pulling out a gun, authorities said. The gun was later recovered after a traffic stop of a cab last November and matched three shell casings.

separate gangs. With shots being fired from the street and the patio, investigators estimated that about two to three dozen shots were fired consecutively from a total of about eight weapons. During this time, Gabay — who was a first deputy counsel for the Empire State Development Cor-
poration and former assistant counsel to Cuomo — had been walking on Bedford Avenue with his brother and friends. Gabay passed in front of the patio right when the gun battle started. Although the group ran to a nearby parking lot between the patio and street and ducked, a bullet hit Gabay in the head. He

NYPD releases sketch of suspect in Kissena Park sex crime pattern Police are searching for the man believed to be responsible for three sexual assaults on women around Queens’ Kissena Park. At around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, a 50-yearold woman was riding a bike along Kissena Park when the suspect grabbed her, police stated. He allegedly talked to the victim as he touched himself over his clothing before the woman was able to break free and flee. On Sunday, June 12, around 10:15 a.m., a 24-year-old woman near the corner of Colden Street and Mulberry Avenue was approached by a man who hugged and kissed her and grabbed
her buttocks, authorities reported. As the man touched himself over his clothing, the victim fled on foot. Around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, near the corner of 56th Avenue and 148th Street, the suspect grabbed a 41-yearold woman by both arms and attempted to pull her into a backyard, police added. After the victim screamed, the suspect fled in a red car. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic man, about 40 years old, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds with a muscular build and a tattoo of a red and green star on the back of one of his arms above the elbow. was taken to Kings Country Hospital Center, where he died a week later. “Carey Gabay was a dedicated public servant whose life was cut short due to reckless gun violence – tragedy that plagues too many of our communities. With Carey’s help, New York passed the nation’s toughest gun safety law, but his murder underscores the fact that our federal gun laws are woefully inadequate,” Cuomo said. “While we took a great step forward with our historic legislation, without action from Congress, known criminals will continue to buy guns in other states today and sell them on the black market in New York tomorrow.” According to prosecutors, all three men were indicted on “depraved indifference murder under the theory of mutual combat,” which means because they all entered into an agreement to engage in a gunfight they are all equally responsive for the murder — regardless of who fired the gun. Each of the men face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted of their top charge.

Cheap gas coming to an end in NJ if state Senate votes for tax increase New Jersey’s gas could become some of the most expensive in the country. ALEXIS SACHDEV @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
New Jersey drivers (and Philadelphians who hit the pump after a trip to Total Wine), brace yourselves. The state’s notoriously cheap gas may soon come to an end, thanks to a measure passed by the state’s Democrat-led Assembly, with support from Gov. Chris Christie. The New Jersey Legislature on Tuesday OK’d a measure that would raise that state’s gasoline tax by 23 cents per gallon starting Friday. The increase will fund road and bridge work throughout the state, NJ.com reported. The plan, hastily ap-
proved after midnight, will cut the sales tax from 7 to 6 percent, and will reduce income tax on retirement income. New Jersey’s Senate will vote on the measure Thursday. The state’s average gas price falls around $2.10 per gallon, more than 30 cents cheaper than Pennsylvania’s and New York’s. This increase would bump New Jersey’s current gas tax from 14.5 cents per gallon to 37.5 cents. Pennsylvania’s gas tax is the highest in the nation, at 51.60 cents per gallon, according to the Tax Foundation, an independent tax policy research group.
MAYOR’S NEW HIRE QUITS De Blasio social media director quits after less than two months on the job A social media director for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio quit after less than two months on the job, later writing in a Facebook post that he did so “for the sake of [his] health” and “sanity.” Scott Kleinberg, a former social media editor at the Chicago Tribune, published the post on Tuesday evening. The message is now no longer publicly available, though it’s not clear whether Kleinberg deleted or simply restricted the privacy settings of the post. “Well, that was fast,” the post read. “I moved to NYC for a dream job and that’s not what I got.” “I tried to stick it out, but it was impossible. I don’t even know the word quit, but for the sake of my health and my sanity, I decided I needed to do just that. ” Responding to other posters in the comments, Kleinberg said he was only sleeping three to four
hours a night because of workrelated stress. “No one should have to go to bed every day with pains in their chest and no one should have to work 13 hours a day week after week plus weekends,” Kleinberg wrote in the replies. “And when someone offers you a job and then takes pieces of it away so it’s no longer the job that you were offered, it’s time to pack it in and find something else. “ According to a press release issued by the mayor’s office on May 3, Kleinberg’s was expected to “infuse personality and engagement into the social media channels for the Office of the Mayor and City government as a whole.” “New York City government is a tough, fast-paced job that is not for everyone,” Andrea Hagelgans, head of de Blasio’s communications team, told DNAInfo in a statement. “We wish him well. BRIEF Body parts wash ashore next to Rio Olympic venue ion Parts of a mutilated body washed up on the sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro police said, just yards from where beach volleyball athletes will compete in the upcoming Olympics. The discovery, first reported to a newspaper by a Rio street vendor, is the latest to unnerve the city as it grapples with rising crime, a recession and exhausted state finances at a time when
it hoped to be celebrating the first Olympics ever held in South America. It was unclear Wednesday afternoon what conditions may have led to the mutilated body but a policeman standing guard by a security perimeter confirmed its existence to Reuters. Police officials did not immediately return calls to their public affairs office for more details Wednesday afternoon. The Olympics, which start
Aug. 5, were intended to show off an economic boom that has since fizzled in Latin America’s biggest country. Now the games come as the state of Rio de Janeiro awaits emergency funding of $892 million to ensure financing for public services. The Olympics also will play out with a backdrop of political instability as Brazil’s Senate tries suspended President Dilma Rousseff, who is accused of accounting tricks in the government
budget, to determine whether she will be ousted for good. The trial is expected to finish after the games. The state in recent months, even as it races to complete a new subway line and other key pieces of infrastructure promised for the Olympics, has missed crucial debt payments and has been forced to postpone purchasing and salary payments for everyone from public health workers to police. REVOLUTIONARY DAYS With the Fourth of July looming, I find myself thinking about the origins of our country and once again I am struck by a thought: The Brits never really got it. Back in the 1700s they never quite understood why all those unruly Americans were so unhappy with their lot in life. From the other side of the stormy Atlantic, that’s understandable. The king and his cronies believed they were providing laws, leaders and security that no rubes in the woods could finagle. The British were the reason America was not being routinely plundered by other powerful nations. The Brits were the reason the colonists had status in the world, decent tea and powdered wigs. And yet the ungrateful upstarts dared to get their raccoon underwear in a twist over a few taxes? Harrumph! But Americans wanted more than fancy snuff boxes and pomp. They wanted their opinions to matter. They wanted true representation. They wanted a government that listened to their concerns and responded as responsible leaders should. Yet their British overlords trudged on, dreaming up new taxes and laying the groundwork for the eventual rise of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. You can no doubt see the parallels to our modern times. like the voteless days of long ago, millions of us actually went to the polls and helped the parties set up the choice we face in this election. But roiling the electorate — left, right and center — is a fundamental sense that Washington doesn’t get it; that big-name Dems and Repubs are more intent on fighting each other than helping all of us. We ask for cooperation, and partisans lead us ever deeper into their dark woods of division. We ask for candidates we can believe in; and both parties push people who are deeply polarizing — not the mention the two least-trusted contenders in a generation. We ask for a new vision of what American government can be; and they give us the same tired, bitter, caustic infighting that voters despise. Again, millions of us helped make this happen, but the fingerprints of party bosses who want to win at all costs are nonetheless all over the outcome. The English never fully grasped how unhappy the Americans were, and they thought every crisis would blow over. But they forgot a simple truth: Rulers who insist on having things their way with no regard for their subjects, don’t remain rulers very long. And when those subjects decide to overturn the carriage, it doesn’t much matter if the kings inside are sitting on the right or left.

The attack on Europe’s thirdbusiest airport was the deadliest in a series of suicide bombings this year in Turkey, part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State and struggling to contain spillover from neighboring Syria’s war. Turkish investigators pored over video footage and witness statements on Wednesday after three suspected Islamic State suicide bombers opened fire and blew themselves up in Istanbul’s main airport, killing 42 people and wounding 239. President Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against terrorism, which he said had “no regard for faith or values. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned it in separate phone calls with Erdogan, his office said. Five Saudis and two Iraqis were among the dead, a Turkish official said. Citizens from China, Jordan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Ukraine were also among the 13 foreigners killed. One attacker opened fire in the departures hall with an automatic rifle, sending passengers diving for cover and trying to flee, before all three blew themselves up in or around the arrivals hall a floor below,
witnesses and officials said. Video footage showed one of the attackers inside the terminal building being shot, apparently by a police officer, before falling to the ground as people scattered. The attacker then blew himself up around 20 seconds later. “It’s a jigsaw puzzle ‌ The authorities are going through CCTV footage, witness statements,â€? a Turkish official said. The Dogan news agency said autopsies on the three bombers, whose torsos were ripped apart, had been completed and that they may have been foreign nationals, without citing its sources. Broken ceiling panels littered the curb outside the arrivals section of the international terminal. Plates of glass had shattered, exposing the inside of the building, and electric cables dangled from the ceiling. Cleanup crews swept up debris and armed police patrolled as flights resumed. Istanbul’s position bridging Europe and Asia has made Ataturk airport, Turkey’s largest, a major transit hub for passengers across the world. The Istanbul governor’s office said 109 of the 239 people hospitalized had since been discharged, but the health minister said 41 were still in intensive care. The Dogan news agency said autopsies on the three bombers, whose torsos were ripped apart, had been completed and that they may have been foreign nationals. It did not cite its sources. REUTERS

North American leaders vow to boost trade despite threats The three nations are member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has vowed to renegotiate or scrap if he wins November’s election. Canada, the United States and Mexico on Wednesday vowed to deepen their economic ties, pushing back against anti-free-trade sentiment that has shifted politi-
cal debate in the United States and Europe. President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Peña Nieto, meeting at a “Three Amigos” summit in Ottawa, said an efficient North American economy was vital for creating goodpaying, middle-class jobs. “We will build upon this strong trilateral economic relationship, and further facilitate trade among our three countries, and improve the networks that allow us to produce products and services together,” they said in a statement. Trump says free trade
has been disastrous, costing thousands of U.S. jobs and depressing wages. Similar complaints were heard in Britain ahead of a surprise referendum vote last week to leave the European Union and its free trade area. Obama and Peña Nieto stressed the importance of the relationship between the United States and Mexico, which has come under strain amid heated U.S. campaign rhetoric, and Obama invited the Mexican leader for a last visit to Washington before Obama’s term ends in January.

It is the first of four potential centers proposed under a bill moving through Congress. Under the existing review system, companies submit products to different divisions of the agency depending on whether it is a drug, device or biologic, a drug made from living cells. A treatment that combines a drug and a diagnostic device could get reviewed on different timelines.

Facebook’s political influence placed under a microscope As the presidential campaign heats up, Facebook Inc. is going out of its way to show its neutrality — an increasingly urgent matter for the social network as evidence of its power continues to emerge. Recent studies have shown the site has extraordinary influence. According to research scheduled to be published in August in the Journal of Communication, when people tagged their friends on Facebook in voting reminders, turnout increased by 15 to 24 percent. During presidential primary elections this year, a Facebook reminder that informed people when their state’s voter registration deadline was approaching and provided a link helped produce a surge of nearly 650,000 new voter registrations in California alone, ac-

cording to Secretary of State Alex Padilla. In the United Kingdom, a Facebook reminder days before the deadline to register to vote on whether the country should exit the European Union led to 186,000 people registering online to vote, according to the government. “Generally, getting people out to vote could
swing a national election,” said Katherine Haenschen, a doctoral student at the University of Texas, Austin and author of the upcoming Journal of Communications study. Facebook is eager to show that its political involvement is limited to seemingly neutral activities such as encouraging voting. The company this week released some
of the guidelines that govern its all-important News Feed — the place most people see postings on Facebook — and has pushed back hard against recent allegations of political bias in its “Trending Topics” module. At the same time Facebook has embraced its role as a “new town hall” for politics, hosting events and helping candidates more effectively leverage their platforms, said Katie Harbath, Facebook’s global politics and government outreach director Her team helps candidates by answering their questions and providing advice, such as how to use Facebook Live and how to increase engagement on their pages. Still, concerns about Facebook’s role in shaping political attitudes are unlikely to abate anytime soon. REUTERS

Airport officials were hesitant to reveal specific safety measures taken following Tuesday’s attacks by suspected Islamic State militants, which killed 41 people and wounded 239 at Europe’s thirdbusiest airport, but increased vigilance appeared to have resulted in at least one airport disruption. Millions of U.S. travelers flying during the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend will face heightened security due to the deadly attacks at Istanbul’s main airport, officials said on Wednesday, adding to potential delays. A terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York was briefly evacuated on Wednesday morning while police, including a bomb squad, investigated a report of a suspicious package. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees operations at the three major airports in the New York City area, said in a statement that police had added “high visibility patrols with tactical weapons and equipment.”
The Transportation Security Administration, which handles screening at U.S. airports, saw mounting criticism this spring from travelers who reported enormous wait times and lengthy security lines. GETTY IMAGES
The agency said it had already put in place counterterrorism patrols at various transportation hubs in the region following the mass shooting in Orlando earlier this month. Agencies in charge of other major airports, including Reagan and Dulles in the Washington, D.C. area, Logan in Boston, O’Hare in Chicago, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth, declined to offer operational details but emphasized that security remains their top priority. “Logan maintains an enhanced security posture,” said an spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Port Authority. “There are many elements that are seen and unseen.” A record number of U.S. travelers are expected between June 30 and July 4, according to AAA,
which projected nearly 43 million Americans would leave home. The vast majority of those travelers will go by car, AAA said, but 3.3 million are expected to fly. That is more than 25 percent higher that the 2.6 million AAA projected to fly during Memorial Day weekend in May, when complaints about long security lines were widespread. Like the attackers at Brussels’ airport in March that killed 16 people, the three Istanbul suicide bombers appear to have struck in a public area outside the first passenger checkpoint. The attacks have reignited debate over whether airport security and screening should extend into public spaces, despite the increased inconvenience and questions about the effectiveness of such a move. Ex-New York Islanders co-owner gets prison term for fraud halved A former money manager who once co-owned the New York Islanders professional hockey team was resentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison for his role in a $554 million fraud, after an appellate court overturned an earlier 10year term. Paul Greenwood, a former executive at WG Trading Co. in Greenwich, Connecticut, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan for defrauding investors, including university foundations and charities, from 1996 to 2009. Prosecutors said Greenwood, 69, and business partner Stephen Walsh issued $554 million of promissory notes to conceal misappropriations that helped fund their lavish lifestyles, including a horse farm and a stuffed teddy bear collection for Greenwood. Preska, who took over the case after another judge died, called the conduct serious, but she credited Greenwood for various good deeds and his cooperation with prosecutors and a court-appointed receiver seeking to recover inves-

tor losses. “I salute you for your charitable works and your cooperation in this case,” she said. Greenwood, who is housed at the same medium-security federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, as convicted Ponzi schemer Bernard
Madoff, pleaded guilty in 2010 to charges including securities fraud. Walsh, WG’s chief executive, and Greenwood, its chief operating and chief financial officer, were part of a group that controlled the National Hockey League’s Islanders team in the 1990s. They were arrested in 2009. Soon after, Greenwood began cooperating with prosecutors in the case against Walsh and with WG’s receiver, who has recovered around 98 percent of investor claims, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Masella said in court. Walsh, 72, pleaded guilty in April 2014 to securities fraud. U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum sentenced Walsh in November 2014 to 20 years in prison and gave Greenwood a 10-year prison term a month later. A federal appeals court in January overturned Greenwood’s sentence, saying it was based on findings about victim losses that were unsupported by the record. The case was reassigned to Preska after Cedarbaum died in February. REUTERS

In “The Legend of Tarzan,” Samuel L. Jackson (with Margot Robbie) plays George Washington Williams, an American who aids Alexander Skarsgard’s vine-swinger on his latest adventure. WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Sam Jackson loves to watch Sam Jackson The actor talks about his unique role in “The Legend of Tarzan” and worrying about the world. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Samuel L. Jackson isn’t shocked young people today may not have seen a Tarzan movie. The vine-swinger used to be a hot commodity, birthing numerous film franchises through the ’20s and the ’60s. After that, Tarzan thinned out, with only a few titles (1984’s “Greystoke,” Disney’s take from 1999) over the last few decades. That may be due to the problematic nature of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original books, which teem with casual racism. The new “The Legend of Tarzan” tries to fix
this. For one thing, it features a strong black character — Jackson’s George Washington Williams, loosely based on the real-life 19th-century Renaissance man — as one of the heroes aiding Alexander Skarsgard’s towering, shirtless Tarzan. The character you play is based on a real person. Tell us about him. He has a lot of guilt about the part he played in fighting in the Indian Wars, then going to Mexico and becoming a freedom fighter of sorts. He was a bit of a rogue. He claimed to be a lot of things he wasn’t. But he still had an impressive life. He wrote an interesting treatise on being black in America. Very, very interesting guy. And he never made it back here from Europe. That’s why he’s buried in Blackpool [England], I guess.
Well, England was always a lot more tolerant than us, even then. That may change now with the Brexit vote. [Laughs] You’ve spent a lot of time working in England, includin. Have you gotten a sense of how this came to pass? It’s hard to field that, because the country is so multicultural. When you’re walking around,
there’s a whole lot of people in native garb. You can tell where people are from. You hear all these languages. To me, London
looks more Muslim than most countries. There’s been a great fear for a very long time, that native Britons are becoming extinct. The complexion of the country’s changing. They’re concerned about that. It’s crazy. A country becoming more diverse doesn’t seem like a bad thing. Is that a problem or is that progress? Making America great again — I’m trying to figure out when that was. Was it the ’50s? The ’60s? It can’t be the ’60s because that’s when the revolution started. So it must be between the ’50s and the ’30s.
GETTY IMAGES
It’s a television version from the ’50s that never existed. Exactly. “Leave It to Beaver.” Not Lucy and Ricky, because that wasn’t good, either.
Do you get in trouble for speaking your mind on social media? People will vilify you online. But I don’t care. I laugh at people who say nasty things to me. Sometimes I just sic my Twitter followers on them. That’s the easy way. You do have a lot of followers. Donald Trump only has four million more, which is nothing to sneeze at. If I combined all mine with my Weibo followers from China, I could probably kick his ass. Some actors talk about not wanting to watch themselves onscreen. That so much bulls—. Do you really believe that? Do you really believe the majority of actors who say “I don’t love watching myself on screen” wouldn’t do something else?

Andrew McMahon has likely already made a rotation (or several dozen) through your summertime playlists. He’s led the sunny California pop-punk band Something Corporate, the anthemically catchy Jack’s Mannequin and is currently appearing as Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, mature and melodic, with the same piano-rock brand that’s served him well over the course of decades. Now McMahon, who shares his efforts with The Dear Jack Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (he was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in 2005), is heading out on tour with Weezer and Panic! at the Disco for the summer. He calls in from a stop in Arizona to chat about balancing the old with the new and enduring magic of a mixed tape. You’ve been touring practically all year, but this time around you’re with Weezer and Panic!

at the Disco. How did that end up happening? I know Brendon [Urie] from Panic from when Jack’s Mannequin did a tour with them almost 10 years ago. He was just a kid at that point, but we’re still friendly with those guys. And Weezer — I did a few shows with Jack’s as well, but I connected with Rivers [Cuomo] in L.A. a while back and got to catch up. It was, like, part a conversation between two guys in a band, and the other part of me just being super fan and geeking out. Given that you probably still get shout-out request for “Konstantine,â€? how do you ďŹ nd a balance between the old and new in your setlist these days? The first priority is the
project I’m promoting and working on because that’s the closest to the time. We’re playing shorter sets so it’s focused on the new music, but for a show like tonight [in Arizona], we’ve got an hour and a half that gives me the freedom to pepper in moments from my career. I love weaving in those older songs and seeing them juxtaposed in a set list. You can see the thread of where I come from. Throwing it back to Jack’s Mannequin, I read somewhere that “The Mixed Tape is about a real mixtape for your now wife. What do you think is so powerful about that medium that still endures today? I was separated from my then-girlfriend, now-
wife, and I was keeping a journal of all these classic breakup songs. I had a running tally of tunes so I gave her a tape of them. I make the joke on stage that singing it doesn’t make you the best guy when you’ve given your ex a mixtape of breakup songs. It’s very meta. I think the thing with [mixtapes] is the same reason Spotify has become such a prominent central position in modern music. To aggregate songs that hold a certain meaning and to be able to impart your personal emotions to the world via a collection is super powerful. I think it gives people who can’t write a song or put out an album the ability to create their own version of a story through a playlist of songs.

Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip

joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. See if this sounds familiar: In Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG,” a kid both curious and melancholic bonds with a creature both otherworldly and gentle. We live in a world of remakes and sequels and reboots, so it wouldn’t be offside for the movies’ most famous populist to try for another “E.T.” But Spielberg hasn’t piggybacked on a past career peak. Broad setup aside, “The BFG” is a very different beast — an outlier amongst both modern blockbusters and Spielberg’s own career. It’s the strangest, most stripped-down film he’s ever made, even considering it’s a CGI-fest with cutting edge tech that turns one of the world’s finest thespians into a motioncapture behemoth. That person is Mark Rylance, the Oscar-winner of Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” who plays a big, friendly giant. Based on a Road Dahl children’s classic that’s only semi-grim, it has him nick young Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) from a London orphanage, whisking her away to a far-off realm ruled by even-bigger colossi, who like to feast upon

tiny humans. But BFG doesn’t play like that, and he slowly warms to her, and the two, as in the book, spend much of the film just chatting. Dahl’s book wouldn’t seem a fit for Spielberg, the king of whirligig thingamajigs. Perhaps it isn’t. And yet “The BFG” appeals to Spielberg’s other major asset: his peerless capacity for deep feeling and unfailing empathy. Whatever happens (or doesn’t happen) in “The BFG,” it’s all anchored by two lonely people forging a profound connection. Spielberg’s favorite shot isn’t of something exploding but a close-up of wide-eyed faces, the jaw slightly agape, the eyes lit up with wonder. Even digitized, the face of Mark Rylance is a marvel, as finely detailed as the real deal. “The BFG” doesn’t have
enough plot to really explore the emotions, to put them to the test a la “E.T.” But maybe it doesn’t need to. It’s a hangout movie in no rush to get anywhere, except when it does: The aimless vibe is abruptly and amusingly ruined by a surprising third act, straight from the book, that both delights with its weirdness (and its sight of actual farting corgis) and nearly sabotages the gentle, funny-sad groove. But that groove is singular and genuine and not to be undervalued. Spielberg’s last CGI film, the slight though enjoyable “The Adventures of Tintin,” felt like a technical exercise — a kid playing with his new toys. Spielberg feels it this time. Barnhill aside, it’s all digital, fake. Yet it feels powerfully and unmistakably human. MATT PRIGGE

“The Legend of Tarzan” Director: David Yates Stars: Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie Rating: PG-13
Well, at least it’s not another origin story. “The Legend of Tarzan” is mainly notable for what it’s not, namely another lugubrious, lumbering introduction, this time to the why of its ripped vine-swinger with an aversion to clothes that aren’t a tattered loincloth. Instead it’s just a random adventure, clocking in under two hours, that throws us into what could be the fourth or fifth entry in a series. And yet here’s the rub: Who in 2016 remembers Tarzan except as a vague concept? Like the Lone Ranger, he’s a cultural commodity that’s been trampled by history, largely absent from the modern screen. He’s one figure who might need a splashy introduction, hipping us to his start as an aristo child born in the jungle, orphaned and raised by people dressed as apes. Reviving him is a fool’s errand, and “The Legend of Tarzan” buckles under the strain while trying to gift us with a
Hey girl. Alexander Skarsgard shows why he was cast in “The Legend of Tarzan.” WARNER BROS. PICTURES
rip-roaring romp. Ostensibly it’s a revisionist reboot, starting after Tarzan — aka John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, played by the massively tall Alexander Skarsgard — has left the thickets of the Congo to assume his role in stuffy English society. He’s lured back through a painfully convoluted international ruse, at which point he’s quick to shed his moneyed duds, bro back down with his old CGI animal friends (and frenemies) and rescue his beloved Jane (Margot Robbie) once she’s captured by a hissable Belgian baddie (Christoph Waltz).
29
But we’re rarely allowed to sit back and munch on our popcorn. Every time “Tarzan” gets into a groove, viewers are hurled back into an awkwardly timed flashback to fill them in on the backstory they may not have Googled beforehand. Stuttering through a slight adventure it keeps interrupting, it bogs itself down further by tackling an old text that’s easily tagged as “problematic.” Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novels teem with casual old school racism, and the very idea is wobbly: an imperialist fantasy in which the king of the African wilds, the lord of the apes is a strapping white guy. And so “Tarzan” struggles to fix a dodgy source. Robbie’s Jane isn’t a babe with a thing for monosyllabic studs but a protofeminist firecracker — who still spends much of the movie as a damsel in distress. Samuel L. Jackson, as real-life race pioneer George Washington Williams, scampers about with Tarzan — but he’s there as a black sidekick. The plot involves the busting of a European slave trade, but it’s no more than a backdrop. To make a woke “Tarzan” might involve making something that’s not “Tarzan.” Or having a budget well under $180 million. MATT PRIGGE

“The Purge: Election Year” delivers on the promise of more government-enabled psychos. MICHELE K. SHORT
“The Purge: Election Year” Director: James DeMonaco Stars: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell Rating: R
• Over 5,500 games: the most anywhere!
In “The Purge: Election Year,” the worst thing happens that could happen in a “Purge” movie: The audience whoops and cheers. That may sound like a silly thing to say about a trashy exploitation grinder released into the belly of the multiplex. The audience is supposed to whoop and cheer. But not at these films. The first two “Purges” were secretly smart: sly satires delivering blunt force trauma — whole hog lefty vigilante entries that were, being lefty, of course anti-vigilante. They didn’t want us to cheer for carnage. That’s what the villains did: the future American populace long tainted by an
annual holiday where, for 12 hours, all murder was legal. Both films knew that gunning for bloodshed was, ultimately, wrong. Not the third one. Though “Election Year” keeps up appearances as savage social critique, it sometimes says, “Eff this,” and prods us into cheering on murder with a big, satisfied smile on our face. Set two years after the second, it relocates once again, this time to D.C., where Senator Roane, a maverick senator played by Elizabeth Mitchell, is running for president with the promise to cancel the purge. Her adversaries — a legion of rich old white men, natch — are afraid to lose a tradition now widely suspected to be what it not-so-secretly is: a way for the wealthy to eliminate the poor while pretending to sate the citizenry. And so they unleash their armed forces to make her one of the holiday’s many new casualties.
Franchise runner James DeMonaco did some impressive world-building with the last installment, but the third finds him already running out of ideas. It also finally succumbs to a problem planted in the second one, like a time-delayed poison: Frank Grillo’s efficient Barnes was introduced as an anguished hothead who needed to be redeemed. Now he’s just another anonymous badass, like Jason Statham or Gerard Butler, only minus the groaning quips. There was only one scene in the last where we were supposed to mindlessly huzzah as bad people were massacred; here there are four or five. It becomes the risible exploitation fare the first two nimbly mocked, asking us to decry violence then want it served up as gorily as possible. Then again, being a mere CroMagnon exploitation movie isn’t necessarily a bad thing. MATT PRIGGE

“Hamilton” mania may have begun in a theater, but New York City has ties to the founding father in every corner. And fans want to discover them all. “With the excitement around the Broadway show, people are craving information about Alexander Hamilton,” says Jennifer Schantz, chief operating officer at the New-York Historical Society. To feed the revolutionary fervor, the museum is launching “Summer of Hamilton” on July 4, a sprawling exhibit that looks at Hamilton’s entire life, from his childhood to a young man courting his future wife, to his time as one of America’s most

colorful statesmen — much of which happened right here. “I find him very inspiring,” Schantz says. “He was an immigrant, he had nothing, but he made himself into who he was with hard work and stamina. He’s this ultimate New Yorker.”
Hamilton HQ The museum has gone allout for Hamilton before with a large exhibit in
2004 that wrapped the building’s exterior in the $10 bill. But this is next-level. In addition to its own collection of Hamilton paraphernalia, the Historical Society has pulled together items like Hamilton’s writing desk from the Museum of the City of New York, a clock that Hamilton presented to the Bank of New York and letters and documents from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Meet the real Mr. Burr, sir The musical, Schantz points out, portrays Aaron Burr as only interested in himself, but he was much more than Hamilton’s lifelong frienemy. “What’s interesting about Aaron Burr is that he was a proponent of women’s rights,” Schantz says. “He was very close to his daughter, Theodosia, and he supported her education. He and his wife wrote long letters that were quite intellectual. So, in a way, he was a feminist.” Also on display are the letters he and Hamilton exchanged — 30 years of disagreements, indeed — before resorting to the duel that would prove fatal to Hamilton, and lead Burr to flee to France.
Living history The Broadway musical, in essence, brought Hamilton back to life, and the Historical Society is looking to do the same with talks and hands-on demonstrations. Hamilton Fridays kick off on July 8 with, appropriately, a sing-along to the Broadway show’s soundtrack (sign up for a solo part!) Hardcore fans will want to mark their calendars for July 10, when the Hamilton-Burr duel will be reenacted. Then on July 15, Trinity Church archivist Annie Petrimouix will discuss Hamilton’s spiritual life. Revolutionary War reenactors will discuss tactics and life on the battlefield, and George Washington himself will also stop by. “It’s a really fun way to learn about history by actually speaking to someone who is embodying that person,” says Schantz.
The next ‘Hamilton’ In addition to preserving history, the museum is also helping the next generation make some of their own. Catch screenings of films like “Evita” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” that Lin-Manuel Miranda credits with inspiring the Broadway show. Grab the New-York Historical Society’s guide to the places in the city that shaped him, from Columbia University to his home, the MorrisJumel Mansion. The exhibit could also be a helpful starting point for future politicians, Schantz points out: “Understanding history helps guide how we should proceed in the future.”

Get your cereal fix in Times Square Kellogg’s NYC is an all-day cereal cafe with some grown-up touches. Your childhood kitchen is opening in Times Square. Celebrate your independence from only being allowed to eat cereal for breakfast on July 4, when Kellogg’s opens an all-day cereal cafe at 1600 Broadway. To make Kellogg’s NYC happen, they’ve recruited no less than former Jean-Georges and Per Se front-of-house veteran Anthony Rudolf for the ambiance, and Momofuku Milk Bar’s dessert maestro Christina Tosi to create some new twists on your favorite cereals. “The main feeling is

Poached oysters at Zadie’s Oyster Room
Eva Kis eats her way through New York eva.kis@metro.us
Raw oysters are unpleasant. There, I said it. Everyone rave about how the briny seawater still sloshing around inside is offset by the sweetness of their rosé or whatever. I prefer to do this thing called savoring my food, rather than shotgunning it because the texture is even worse than the taste. At Zadie’s Oyster Room (413
E. 12th St.) chef Marco Canora, aka the Bone Broth Guy, has created a more civilized way to enjoy the bivalve — without smothering it in breadcrumbs, as is the custom of my native South. Zadie’s serves oysters seven ways, but the best of the bunch involves poaching them in a butter-andcream broth with wakame seaweed, sherry and Worcestershire
sauce, then throwing in a handful of sourdough croutons and finishing it off with microgreens ($16.50). Creamy without the heaviness of chowder, yet more satisfying than miso soup (where you usually find wakame), each spoonful tastes like the refined essence of the ocean. Not all of Canora’s attempts are as successful — steamed

The best national parks to see this summer — happy birthday, National Parks Service!
With the centennial of the National Park Service this summer, 2016 is the year to stay local and explore America.
Crater Lake National Park For pure visual splendor, it’s hard to beat Crater Lake’s brilliant blue water and 2,000-foot cliffs. The five-mile lake is the clearest in the U.S., and Oregon’s pristine air offers unobstructed views of up to 100 miles. The world-class hiking keeps active visitors occupied with more than 100 miles of trails; don’t miss the 2.5-mile gradual walk up the Mount Scott Trail, the park’s high point.
Acadia National Park It may be one of the smaller national parks,
THINGS TO DO
The greatest outdoors Zion National Park
Zion National Park In the Southwest, the hot summer weather is perfect for hiking the river at the base of Utah’s Zion National Park. The trail through the upper canyon, known as The Narrows, is literally the river — trekkers walk, wade and swim through the 16-mile route, penned in on both sides by 2,000-foot vertical sandstone walls. The hike is strenuous but well worth the effort for the unique experience and awe-inspiring scenery.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks Set in the shadow of 14,505-foot Mount Whitney (the highest summit in the contiguous United States), California’s Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are actually two parks administered as one. The combined park is a backpacker’s dream, with more than 850 miles of remote trails through extensive glacial canyons and old-growth forests, home to giant sequoia trees standing over 250 feet tall.

but Maine’s Acadia has an amazingly diverse landscape, from sandy beaches to hardwood forests and granite peaks. The park encompasses most of Mount Desert Island and some of the smaller surrounding islands. The rugged, rocky coastline has become an absolute must-visit on the Atlantic coast.
Kenai Fjords National Park Located 2.5 hours from Anchorage on the stunning Kenai Peninsula, Kenai Fjords National Park is an Ice Age dreamscape: Think pristine water, giant icebergs and seemingly endless glaciers. In the summer, long daylight hours
and mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s are ideal conditions to try the park’s many adventurous activities like kayaking, hiking and stand-up paddleboarding.
Shenandoah National Park Located just 75 miles from Washington, D.C.,
Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is a popular fall foliage destination. Unlike in the fall, however, this is the time to get out and hike to one of the park’s dozen waterfalls, or camp under an open sky — almost all of Shenandoah’s 196,000 gorgeous acres are open to backcountry camping.
Grand Teton, the highest peak in the rugged Teton Range, rises 13,775 feet above the Jackson Hole valley floor in Wyoming. Grand Teton National Park’s alpine terrain, including a dozen small glaciers, the Snake River, various streams and numerous crystalline lakes like the 15-mile-long Jackson Lake, provides visitors a reprieve from the heat.

NYCFC turning things around
Derrick Rose flashes his new Knicks No. 25. GETTY IMAGES
EXCITEMENT BUILDING FOR ROSE AND KNICKS
Phil Jackson got this one right. The acquisition of Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls will immediately make the Knicks a much better team when they step on the court next season. Having a former MVP as your floor general will do that to a team, and I really think that Rose is going to hit it out of the park here in the Big Apple. Rose’s game has grit and attitude to it, and that’s New York. Rose also doesn’t shy away from standing up to his critics when he is questioned and will give it to you straight. That mentality will hopefully help Rose strive on and off the court for the Knicks. Over his first seven NBA seasons Rose has been highly overcriticized about being injury prone, taking plays (and games) off, and regarding this relationship with teammates. Rose, having a chance to explain himself, said that after his second knee injury he was focusing more on finishing a complete season before turning his volume back up. Over that time, Rose has been able to steadily improve his

shooting. You have to take the good with the bad, and a lot of Derrick Rose’s bad has been left behind in Chicago. On the surface, the addition of Rose does lead me to believe the Knicks might have a formula that could sneak them in the
playoffs next season. It’s going to be interesting to see how Rose (and the rest of the team) fit into Jeff Hornacek’s hybrid triangle offense. Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic were highly involved in the Suns’ offense under Hornacek and that alone is exciting to think about when it comes to how big a role Rose is given. Rose has had the headlines for the past week, but let’s not forget that this is still Carmelo Anthony’s team. Melo has a chance to prove to Knicks fans that he can win with another All-Star-caliber player on the floor. The last time Melo had an All-Star at point guard was Allen Iverson from 2006-08 in Denver, where he averaged 27.3 points per game over those two seasons. Though this is still Melo’s team, I’m more excited about the Rose and Porzingis dynamic. All things point to Hornacek experimenting to do what is best for his players offensively. With Porzingis going into his second season, you can only expect that he will
have a sophomore slump at some point. What will be the best medicine for Porzingis’ potential slump is a point guard who can get into the paint and pull bigs to the basket — opening up guys for 3-pointers. In addition, when Porzingis starts to inevitably get beat up by other bigs, Rose and Carmelo will presumably get in the paint to bang and let Zinger leak outside. Rose also brings a physicality to the point guard position for the Knicks. Standing at a broad and athletic 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, Rose is visually a clear upgrade from last year’s starter, Jose Calderon. Adding a defensive guard to play alongside a player like Porzingis is only going to amplify the ignition of the offense. A block by Porzingis could now become a potentially lethal 2-on-1 fast break. A steal from Rose with the 7-foot Porzingis hustling down the floor should equal easy buckets for the Knicks. The NBA season did just end, but New York never sleeps — and neither does its basketball.
Perhaps it was a blessing that NYCFC dropped a 1-0 decision to the New York Cosmos in fourthround action of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup two weeks ago because since that ignominious defeat, City has looked like a different outfit. Heading into the Open Cup, NYCFC had a four-game winless stretch in Major League Soccer action, including the embarrassing 7-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls. But since that break in action to take on the North American Soccer League Cosmos, City has managed to string together two-straight impressive wins, including a 3-2 win over the Eastern Conference’s leader, the Philadelphia Union. This bit of good play is just what NYCFC needed, as they prepare for their Red Bulls rematch on Sunday, at Yankee Stadium (noon, ESPN). The previous contest was also at the stadium — a game which now has many nicknames, such as the “Hudson River Massacre” and the “Red Bull Wedding.” Returning to the scene of the crime is perfect for a Red Bulls squad that’s never lost to City in the four games they’ve squared off since NYCFC came into the league last season. City, on the other hand, is trying all it can to put that last shellacking in the past, as they have bigger goals than just avenging a loss — as ugly and embarrassing as it was. NYCFC is back

Through 17 games of the 2016 season, NYCFC now has the most road victories of any team in MLS, with four. Kwadwo Poku, a midfielder and a fan favorite of the City fans, has had his contract rights sold to Miami FC of the North American Soccer League.
in the Eastern Conference race, thanks to its current winning streak. So, knocking off the two teams they’re battling for conference supremacy in a week’s time would really put City in prime position to reclaim the top spot. And the three points earned in victory will do just that. It’s no coincidence that City’s fortunes have started to turn just as the team’s three high-paid designated European stars have also seemingly turned the corner as a trio. Frank Lampard, whose two goals this season have come in the past two games, has shaken the doldrums. Andrea Pirlo also found the back of the net in the win against the Union. David Villa, the league’s leading goal-scorer, hasn’t had the same tribulations as the other two, but when he also scored in the Philadelphia match, it seemed like all was right again with City.
