RYAN SAYS CLINTON MAY HAVE GOTTEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT FROM FBI
1
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Wednesday that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton may have been given preferential treatment from the FBI in its investigation of her use of a private email server and should not receive classified information during her campaign. “It looks like it to me,” Ryan told reporters when asked if the former secretary of state received preferential treatment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Tuesday it would not recommend charges regarding Clinton’s email.

US TO FUND ZIKA VIRUS STUDY OF US OLYMPIC TEAM

The U.S. National Institutes of Health said it will fund a study to monitor U.S. athletes, coaches and members of the Olympic Committee staff for exposure to Zika virus while in Brazil, with the hope of gaining better understanding of how it persists in the body and the potential risks it poses. The study, announced on Tuesday, seeks to determine the incidence of Zika virus infection, identify potential risk factors for infection, evaluate how long the virus remains in bodily fluids, and study reproductive outcomes of Zika-infected participants. Brazil, which has been hardest hit by the mosquito-borne virus spreading across the Americas, will host the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next month. REUTERS
US SANCTIONS NORTH KOREAN LEADER, OTHERS, OVER RIGHTS ABUSES

The United States sanctioned top North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, for what it said were “notorious abuses of human rights.” It was the first time the United States had identified the North Korean leader as a direct target for sanctions, and diplomats say the decision will incense the nuclear-armed country, where the leader is considered infallible. The sanctions, which target property and other assets within U.S. jurisdiction, extend to 10 other individuals and five entities, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement. “Under Kim Jong Un, North Korea continues to inflict intolerable cruelty and hardship on millions of its own people, including extrajudicial killings, forced labor, and torture,” Acting Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam J. Szubin said in the statement. REUTERS

NYC renters can find deals — if they’re rich The pressure for concessions has been greatest in Manhattan. LEN MANIACE @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Though most apartment dwellers are singing the rent-is-too-damnhigh blues, for the first time in years some New Yorkers are humming a different tune. With fewer residents willing or able to follow rising rents into the stratosphere, rents are softening, particularly in Manhattan, and more landlords are offering what amounts to rent discounts in the hope of moving their merchandise. Those concessions come typically in the form of one month’s free rent and skipping the brokers’ fees, said Jonathan Miller of Miller Samuel, a real estate appraisal and consulting firm which does work for Douglas
Elliman Real Estate.
Rise in concessions In the last year, the percentage of Manhattan apartment rentals carrying concessions rose to 12.6 percent as of this May, compared with only 1.6 percent one year earlier, Miller said. The last time the concession rate was this high was in 2010, when New York and the nation were coming out of the Great Recession, he added. The incentives are due to high-priced rents that are outstripping customers’ ability to pay, said Gary Malin, president of Citi Habitats, a real estate brokerage firm. “The market has gotten very pricey and jobs are not being created at a price point that can match these rents,” Malin said.
Who benefits? Most New Yorkers won’t find these deals, however.
Rent concessions and other incentives are aimed mostly at the upper end. Miller, the appraiser, said they are largely limited to the upper 40 percent of the market with the biggest bargains going to the top 10 percent. That’s because the building boom, largely aimed at the affluent, has resulted in an oversupply of these apartments, he said. Meanwhile, rents continue to rise for average earners. Making the situation tougher for people at middle and lower pay scales is more competition; many people who would have bought apartments or houses, are stuck in rentals because of stricter loan requirements by lenders.
Making the most of it in Manhattan Rent concessions began to pick up speed nine to 12 months ago and have been increasing ever since, said Constantine Valhouli, co-founder of
“The market has gotten very pricey and jobs are not being created at a price point that can match these rents.” Malin
NeighborhoodX, a real estate analytics startup. Concessions are viewed as more attractive than actual rent cuts because they allow buildings to maintain an attractive rent profile that would be helpful in seeking financing from lenders, and also because it avoids pressure from existing tenants for reduced rents, experts say. The pressure for concessions has been greatest in Manhattan, where rents rose only 0.6 percent over the year ending in May, in contrast to 4.5 percent in Brooklyn and 8.8 percent in northwest Queens, Miller said. Valhouli holds out hope that the rent increases which have punished those with more modest incomes may peak soon. Though rents are still rising in New York’s average neighborhoods, Valhouli said some rents are beginning to decrease in parts of another Northeastern city that’s seen a housing boom and rocketing rent rises; some rents are declining in a couple of outer Boston neighborhoods. “There is a trickledown affect,” he said.

NYPD seeks Bronx psychologist accused of sexual assault on teen Police are searching for a psychologist who has been accused of performing a sex act on a 15-yearold and is now believed to have left the state. On Tuesday, police reported they are searching for Clifton Ables, 51, who was accused of sexual assaulting a boy, 15, inside a Parkchester residence in the Bronx. The alleged assault took place last Nov. 1. Authorities, who now suspect that Ables may be in Florida, arrested the psychologist in March for unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child because he was living with the 15-year-old, who was believed to be a runaway in his care, the New York Daily News reported. Ables was suspended without pay after his arrest. Authorities have

Five women have allegedly scammed nearly $450,000 from multiple victims since April in a scheme that promises to lift hexes from cursed families. On Tuesday, police stated that victims of the con were approached by three of the five women who claimed that the victim’s families were cursed. To reverse the curse, the victims were instructed to bring all of their money and jewelry in a bag to the women. Once the curse-re-
moving ritual has been performed, the bags were returned to the victims, who then discovered that their money and valuables were replaced with bottles of water, police reported. Operating in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, the group has targeted Asian women in their 50s and 60s, authorities told the New York Daily News. Officials did not say how the group approached their individual victims. The first victim, a 55-year-old woman, was scammed out of $280,000 and an unknown amount of jewelry on April 18, on Little Italy’s Grand Street, according to authorities. On April 27, another victim, 61, lost $130,000 to the group in an apartment in Brooklyn’s Bath Beach neighborhood. On May 10, in

Queens, another woman, 53, was scammed by the group, police stated, adding that she had $20,000 taken from her. This was followed by two more reported incidents in Manhattan and Brooklyn in June that netted the group $13,000 in jewelry and $29,000 in cash. Police described the five women wanted in connection to the scam only as Asians.

BRIEF Wall Street scion Caspersen pleads guilty to massive fraud Former Wall Street executive Andrew Caspersen pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges he tried to defraud investors out of nearly $150 million, blaming his conduct on a gambling addiction he could not control. Caspersen, who worked at a unit of investment banker Paul Taubman’s PJT Partners Inc. prior to his arrest in March, pleaded guilty in federal court
in Manhattan to securities fraud and wire fraud. The defendant, who graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, choked up in court as he admitted to cheating numerous people, mostly family and friends, out of $38 million through what he called a “simple” fraud. “It was just a means for me to get money to feed a gambling addition that was all consuming at the time,”
Wall Street GETTY IMAGES
Caspersen said. Prosecutors said Caspersen, the son of late Wall Street finan-
cier Finn M.W. Caspersen, from November 2014 to March 2016 tried to defraud over a dozen investors by claiming he would use their funds to make loans to private equity firms. Instead, prosecutors said he used the money to trade in his own brokerage account, to make payments to earlier investors, and to replace over $8 million he had misappropriated from PJT’s Park Hill Group, where he was a partner. Obama says he will keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan until 2017 Obama said the role of U.S. forces in Afghanistan will remain unchanged: training and advising Afghan police and troops, and supporting counterterrorism missions against the Taliban and other groups. President Barack Obama, calling Afghanistan’s security situation precarious, said on Wednesday he will keep U.S. troop levels there at 8,400 through the end of his administration rather than reducing them to 5,500 by year’s end as previously planned. Obama’s plan still calls for a reduction in U.S. troop levels from the current roughly 9,800, but not as much as previously planned. Obama, who took office in 2009 pledging to wind down the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he had ended America’s combat mission in Afghanistan. But he acknowledged that security concerns persist. “The security situation in Afghanistan remains precarious,” Obama said. “The Taliban remains a threat. They’ve gained ground in some places.”
Taliban forces now hold more territory in Afghanistan than at any time since the 2001 U.S.led invasion, according to recent United Nations estimates. The Islamic State group has also established a small presence in Afghanistan. Obama’s decision, which came after a review submitted last month by the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Army General John Nicholson, drew some criticism inside and outside his administration. Some Pentagon officials said that it does nothing to address the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. “It’s disappointing that the administration thinks that troop numbers are a substitute for a more comprehensive strategy,” said a U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This is neither the reduction that the White House seems to have wanted nor the current numbers that don’t seem to be sufficient to deal with the security problem.” Mac Thornberry, the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, criticized what he said was a new cap on U.S. troop levels. Brexit’s greatest dangers may still lie ahead
The U.S. Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C. GETTY IMAGES
Federal Reserve policymakers decided in June that interest rate hikes should stay on hold until they have a handle on the consequences of Britain’s vote on EU membership, according to the minutes of the Fed’s June policy meeting released on Wednesday. The minutes of the June 14-15 meeting, which took place ahead of the June 23 referendum in which Britons voted to leave the European Union, showed widespread unease over the so-called “Brexit” vote, including among voting members on the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee. “Members generally agreed that, before assessing whether another step in removing monetary accommodation was warranted, it was prudent to wait for additional data on the consequences of the U.K. vote,” according to the minutes. Worries have only intensified since the vote and Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo cited the rise in uncertainty on Wednesday when he argued for holding off on rate hikes until inflation had turned decisively higher. At the June policy meeting, policymakers also cited a severe slowdown in hiring by U.S. employers as a reason for leaving interest rates steady last month, the minutes showed. The Brexit vote shocked investors and triggered $2 trillion in
losses in global stock markets the day after the referendum. Anxieties remain with investors, with global financial conditions tightening as investors anticipate it could take years before Britain and the EU agree to new rules on finance, trade and immigration. On Wednesday, U.S. benchmark and longdated Treasury yields hit record lows, with some investors betting the Fed would keep rates on hold through 2017. “We would need to see a few months of good data … to support a hike,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. The dollar, which has gained more than two percent against a basket of currencies since the Brexit vote and could weigh on U.S. exporters, weakened slightly following publication of the minutes. Before the British vote, the Fed had signaled two interest rate hikes would likely be needed this year to keep the U.S. economy from eventually overheating. But since the British referendum, several Fed policymakers have said the uncertainty warrants caution, including New York Fed President William Dudley who said on Tuesday the Fed needed to be patient on rate increases and that it was too soon to know the fallout from the British decision. BRIEF Imprisoned US soldier Manning hospitalized in Kansas U.S. soldier Chelsea Manning, imprisoned for handing over classified files to pro-transparency site WikiLeaks, was hospitalized, her attorney said on Wednesday, after media reports that Manning had attempted to commit suicide. The Army confirmed Manning, 28, who was born male but identifies as a woman, had
been released back into custody from the hospital, American Civil Liberties Union attorney Chase Strangio said. Manning’s medical condition was not released. Manning was taken to a hospital near the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, early on Tuesday, U.S. Army spokesman Colonel Patrick Seiber said. CNN, citing Seiber and an unnamed official, reported that she was taken to a hospital after
an apparent attempt to take her own life. “Reports of Chelsea’s suicide attempt are unconfirmed,” Strangio wrote on Twitter. “We just know that she was taken to the hospital and are trying to learn more.” Seiber said that officials continue to monitor the inmate’s condition. Attempts to reach the military correctional facility where Manning is imprisoned were not
successful. One of Manning’s attorneys, Nancy Hollander, said in a statement on Wednesday that she was outraged over the release of her client’s confidential medical information to the news media. Hollander also said the Army failed to connect Manning with her lawyers for a planned phone call on Tuesday, and the earliest Army officials could accommodate a call was Friday morning. REUTERS

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said on Wednesday she had accepted the FBI’s recommendation that no charges should be brought in the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s personal email system. “I received and accepted their unanimous recommendation that the
thorough, year-long investigation be closed and that no charges be brought against any individuals within the scope of the investigation, Lynch said in a statement. On Tuesday, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey said Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, had been “extremely careless in her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, but he recommended no criminal charges be filed in the case. While Comey’s announcement lifted a cloud of uncertainty that had loomed over Clinton’s White House campaign,

his strong criticism of her judgment ignited a new attack on her over the email issue by Donald Trump, her likely Republican opponent in the Nov. 8 election.
Lynch said she met on Wednesday afternoon with Comey and the career prosecutors and agents who had investigated whether Clinton broke the law as result of email servers kept in her Chappaqua, New York, home. One question is whether she mishandled classified information. Asked whether a special prosecutor should be named to investigate the matter, Ryan said the House would not “foreclose any options. Clinton’s campaign was anxious to move on after Comey’s announcement, saying in a statement on Tuesday it was pleased with the FBI decision. Clinton visits AC boardwalk to hit Trump on bankruptcies Hillary Clinton speaks at a rally on the boardwalk on Wednesday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. GETTY IMAGES
Clinton, standing next to the shuttered Trump Plaza casino, said Trump routinely profited from the financial ruin of workers in the economically depressed resort town. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited the famous boardwalk in Atlantic City to highlight Republican rival Donald Trump’s casino bankruptcies, warning he would bring the same cutthroat approach to managing the U.S. economy. “The people he’s trying to convince to vote for him are the same people he’s been exploiting for years — working people, small-business people,” Clinton said. Clinton said Trump’s casino bankruptcies and numerous complaints against him by contractors showed he cannot be trusted to set economic policy from the White House. “He makes over-the-top
promises and says if people trust in him, put their faith in him, he’ll deliver,” she said. “Then everything falls apart, people get hurt, and Donald gets paid.” The Trump Plaza was one of four casinos Trump once owned in Atlantic City. He left the city after his last bankruptcy. Clinton frequently uses criticism of Trump’s business record to illustrate a principle campaign theme — that the wealthy New Yorker is only interested in boosting his financial bottom line, and not concerned about the economic struggles of working Americans. Clinton reminded supporters who gathered on the boardwalk under a boiling sun, within steps of the city’s beach, that Trump had promised to “do for the country what I did for my business.” She said Trump intentionally ran up hundreds of millions of debt on his companies, borrowed at high rates, defaulted on the loans, and left in the lurch the workers and contractors who relied on his casinos for income. Donald Trump, RNC raised $51M in June Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee raised nearly $51 million for his White House campaign in June, after he launched his first aggressive effort at raising cash, Trump’s organization reported on Wednesday. The most recent haul dwarfs the $3.1 million the Trump campaign raised in May. That low number prompted widespread concern among Republicans that the
New York businessman, a newcomer to politics, would be unable to compete with Democrat Hillary Clinton’s massive fundraising operation. For this month’s total, fundraising emails circulated by the campaign brought in $26 million, in addition to more than $25 million raised in conjunction with the Republican National Committee through joint fundraising events in June and the last week of May. US to probe shooting of black man by police in Louisiana The incident, parts which were caught on a bystander’s video, follows widespread protests in the United States over deadly force by police against minorities in cities including Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore and New York. The U.S. Justice Department will lead an investigation into the fatal police shooting of a black man in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after family and protesters demanded an independent probe, the state’s governor said on Wednesday. About 200 protesters gathered Tuesday night chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Black lives matter” after Alton
Sterling, 37, was shot and killed during an altercation with two white police officers at about 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities said. “I have very serious concerns. The video is disturbing, to say the least,” Gov. John Bel Edwards told reporters. He said he had spoken with Sterling’s family and that they joined him in calling on protesters to be peaceful. The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will join in the investigation. The two white officers were identified as Blane Salamoni, a four-year veteran, and Howie Lake, a three-year veteran, who were both put on administrative leave, Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said at a news conference.

Early Tuesday morning, the officers responded to a disturbance call from someone who said a black man wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a convenience store had threatened him with a gun, Dabadie said. “When officers arrived Sterling was armed and the altercation ensued that resulted in the loss of his life,” Dabadie said. The cellphone video of the incident, which has
been widely shown on media, shows an officer confronting a black man in a red shirt in the parking lot of the Triple S Food Mart, and ordering him to get on the ground. The video showed the two officers tackling the man to the pavement, one pulling a gun from his holster and pointing it at the man’s chest, then firing a shot. At least three gunshots were heard, although the camera jerks away from the scene. Police did not say how many shots were fired. The body cameras of both officers became dislodged during the altercation, but continued recording audio and video, police said at the news conference. The recordings and other videos will be reviewed in the investigation, Dabadie said. The owner of the Triple S Food Mart, Abdullah

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed the motion in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on behalf of the state coalition. “Schools are facing the potential loss of funding for simply exercising the authority to implement the policies that best protect their students,” Paxton said in a statement. The 13-state coalition’s lawsuit is one of several statebased challenges to the federal government’s May directive that public schools must allow transgender students to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity or face the loss of federal funding. The issue has thrown transgender rights into the national spotlight and enraged social conservatives who say federal civil rights protections encompass biological sex, not gender identity. REUTERS

Surprise as Pistorius jailed for six years over girlfriend’s murder Pistorius has already served 12 months in prison for her death. But the original manslaughter conviction was increased to murder by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal last year. South African Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius was sent back to jail for six years on Wednesday for murdering Reeva Steenkamp, less than half the 15 year minimum term sought by prosecutors. Judge Thokozile Masipa, whose sentence at the initial manslaughter trial

those without his wealth or international celebrity status. His backers say he did not intend to kill Steenkamp. The state and large sections of the South African public had demanded a 15 year jail term, the pre-

Driverless cars need infrared technology to be safe, says auto supplier ZF Self-driving cars will need multiple detection systems including expensive infrared “lidar technology if they are to be safe at high speeds, the chief executive of German autos supplier ZF Friedrichshafen said on Wednesday. Stefan Sommer’s remarks come a week after news that a 2015 Tesla Model S crashed into a trailer while on “autopilot mode. Tesla has said it was hard for the car’s cameras to identify the white trailer against a bright Florida sky. “I have no details about the Tesla accident, so I can’t comment on it, Sommer told a news conference to discuss ZF’s integration of rival TRW. But he added cameras relying on visual

signals alone were insufficient for safe autonomous driving at high speed. “For autonomous driving, we will need three core technologies: picture processing camera technology, short and long-range radar, and lidar, Sommer said. Laser- or infraredbased lidar technology will help vehicle sensors pick up contours and contrasts of obstacles which normal cameras
are unable to detect, particularly in low light situations, he added. Lidar technology is currently too expensive to be incorporated in mass production vehicles, but investments into the technology will bring economies of scale and will likely lower the costs to a manageable level, Sommer said. Companies working on lidar technology include U.S.-based Velodyne. REUTERS
THE CRUMBLING TRUST FACTOR Okay, so Hillary Clinton won’t be charged with a crime, won’t be put on trial, and certainly won’t be starring in a reality show version of “Orange is the New Black. And plenty of legal analysts say based on their assessment of the evidence against the former sec of state, the FBI’s decision not to prosecute was correct. But make no mistake: When it came to doing the public’s business from a private email server in her house, her professional conduct was found overwhelmingly, undeniably and egregiously wrong — not by some vast right-wing conspiracy — but by the Democratic administration she served. The facts say as a member of President Obama’s cabinet she broke with standard operating procedures, was careless with national

security and then deceptive about it. I realize seeing this in print or online will infuriate many Democrats who will no doubt jump onto Twitter to excoriate me. Two things: Please be specific — which lake? And leave room for some of the Trump followers because they hate me too for pointing out his many falsehoods. I don’t care. Whether you like a candidate, intend to vote for him or her — of even if you think he or she is sometimes unfairly attacked — you need to face up to a painful truth. Both major contenders in this elec-
tion are playing fast and loose with the truth. Of course some are going to shriek, “False equivalency! My candidate lies, but not as often as that other snake! On any given day you may be right. Congratulations. But to borrow a phrase from Clinton herself: “What difference at this point does it make? The evidence and the polls say many voters face a dreadful choice this fall between two candidates they have good reasons to mistrust. This does not mean picking one is futile. Who knows? When all is said and done, perhaps we’ll wind up with the greatest president of modern times. But we will have to find some way to measure that, because when either candidate asks us to take his or her word, we now know for sure we can’t. Clinton GETTY IMAGES

The Washington Post, Washington Bestsellers Paperback Nonfiction/General. March 29, 2009. 2WealthManagement.com’s “Top 100 RIAs of 2015”ranking was assembled using data from Meridian-IQ. Advisory firms are ranked by total assets under management. To land on the list, firms had to have a focus on financial and retirement planning for individual and high-net-worth clients. And institutional clients do not make up a substantial portion of their businesses. Finally, none of these firms are owned by a bank, broker/dealer or investment company. Investor experience/returns were not considered as part of this ranking. Edelman Financial Services Ranked 3rd. 3Throughout the firm’s nearly 30 year history, EFS and Ric Edelman have been presented with more than 100 business, advisory, communication and community service awards. A complete list of awards won can be requested by contacting the firm at (888)-PLAN-RIC. 4According to Barron’s, “The formula [used] to rank advisors has three major components: assets managed, revenue produced and quality of the advisor’s practice. Investment returns are not a component of the rankings because an advisor’s returns are dictated largely by each client’s risk tolerance. The quality-of-practice component includes an evaluation of each advisor’s regulatory record.”The rankings are based on the universe of applications submitted to Barron’s. The selection process begins with a nomination and application provided to Barron’s. Principals of Edelman Financial Services, LLC self-nominated the firm and submitted quantitative and qualitative information to Barron’s as requested. Barron’s reviewed and considered this information which resulted in the rankings on Aug. 27, 2012/Aug. 28, 2010/Aug. 31, 2009. Adam DeVine, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Zac Efron destroy a Hawaii event in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.” TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX
wknd THE FUN STARTS HERE
Adam DeVine buffs up (sort of) The actor had to work out to play Zac Efron’s brother in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Adam DeVine admits he’s hungover. The L.A. premiere for “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” his new movie, was the night before, and at 32, his body is no longer able to handle boozing. As it happens, the fear of getting older is one of the themes in the new comedy. The “Workaholics” and “Pitch Perfect” actor and Zac Efron play hard-partying brothers who are forced by their parents to bring dates to their sister’s Hawaii destination wedding,
On Zac I should ask about Zac Efron. It’s weird that people are still surprised when he’s funny. I’m like, “How many comedies does this guy have to do before someone gives him credit?” I honestly think of all the comedies he’s done, he’s the funniest as Dave. Dave is a lot like Zac in real life: He’s a sweet, sincere, nice guy — he’s just a f—ing sweetheart. He’ll say these dumb and insane things, but so earnestly. And he has the most annoyingly perfect abs.
rather than go their usual stag. They wind up snagging two strangers (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza), who are secretly way wilder than they are. DeVine talks aging, becoming known
I think he cut me some slack on “Mike and Dave.” I was working so hard to get into great shape, because I was going to have to stand next to him. So I was working out the most I ever have in my life. When I’d work out with him he’d stop halfway through and say, “I’m good!” Then he stopped working out at all halfway through the production. I’m like, “I see what you’re doing: You’re so nice you’re going to put on a few pounds to meet me in the middle.” [Laughs] He got nowhere close, but I appreciated the offer.
for his musical chops and his very different fan bases. The 30s can be brutal on the body. How has it been for you? The hangovers now
last a full day. It used to be I could wake up and shake it off, like a dog shaking off water. Now it’s a full day of me dealing with it. But for the most part I’m loving my 30s. I’m starring in a movie in my 30s! The 30s have been great for me. You weren’t a musical person before “Pitch Perfect,” but even in “Mike and Dave” you’re slipping in a lot of song and dance bits. Where does that come from? I’ve always liked goofing off and singing and dancing and acting like a dummy. How did the “Pitch Perfect” team know you had this in you? I’m pretty musical on “Workaholics.” Maybe that has something do with it. But when I went
in [to audition] I didn’t know it was a singing movie. I thought it was a baseball movie. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. So I did the scene and they were like, “OK, what song did you prepare?” So I just sang the “Full House” theme song. That was the only song that popped into my head. I walked out of the audition saying, “There’s no way I’ve gotten it.” And somehow I did get it. And now it seems like I sing in absolutely every movie. [Laughs]

TV super-producer Norman Lear (“All in the Family,” “Good Times”) gets his own doc profile. MUSIC BOX FILMS
“Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You” Directors: Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady Genre: Documentary Rating: R
GET UP TO
Does Norman Lear deserve to be mentioned alongside the grimeloving ’70s Hollywood auteurs? While untold film directors were feeding a public briefly thirsty for tales of grit and misery and doom, Lear was holding up the TV end. He was (and is, at 93) a fellow firebrand and prolific one-man-band hit-maker whose shows, all of them comedies, dealt head-on with bigotry, economic hardships, taboo subjects and Vanessa Redgrave jokes. As you well know, we now live in a new Golden Age of Television,
but few of today’s acclaimed colossuses are as brash — and as entertaining in their brashness — as “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” “Maude” and “Good Times,” to say nothing of wack experiments like “Fernwood 2 Night.” The ’70s filmmakers can be idolized out of proportion, garnering endless moony lip service and blandly genuflecting documentaries. That doesn’t quite happen to the television god of “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You,” a doc that tries to cover more than his greatest hits. Still, attempts to create a cosmic look at a titan still walking the Earth are bland, especially compared to the deep(ish) dives into his halcyon days, when he cranked out one Nielsen smash after another, each of them alchemist wonders that somehow mixed cutting social commentary with a well-
earned laugh track. And yet what you learn is rarely something you didn’t know before. You hear about the not-so-secretly progressive glories of “All in the Family” and “Good Times,” about the two-part abortion episode of “Maude,” about Nixon placing Lear on his enemies list. Despite the dearth of new material and takes — and the wealth of hyperboles, such as one talking head who measures TV history as “Before Norman” and “After Norman” — a doc such as this has a comfort food quality, much like tuning into a show week after week. It is a movie, after all, and a movie still has the size and stature, if not the length, to reawaken interest in a great artist whose greatness is so enshrined in the public consciousness we may have forgotten exactly why he was great to begin with. The sorta-hero of “Captain Fantastic” is one of those characters who requires a chart with columns marked “pros” and “cons.” On the pro side, Viggo Mortensen’s Ben — a superhippie who’s raised his kids deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest — has ensured his brood of six won’t have to suffer through the sausage factory of the American school system. They’ll grow up with a thirst for knowledge and difficult books. In the con category is this: Ben is also a reckless, dangerous, smug jerk. His kids are routinely put in harm’s way. He’s as much of an autocrat as any despot he derides, bullying his spawn into obeying his every command even as he preaches the gospel of open minds. When they venture into the wilds of society, he brandishes his peen for the sole purpose of upbraiding passersby for being prurient sheeple. This mixed bag of a protagonist is given what sounds like a wacky road trip plot.
We promise “Captain Fantastic” is not as annoying as this photo. WILSON WEBB, BLEECKER STREET
When we catch up with Ben and company, the matriarch, who suffered from depression, has taken her life. Ben is not welcome at her suburban funeral, as her wealthy father (Frank Langella at his most ghoulish) blames him for brainwashing his daughter. Ben piles the kids into their tour bus (named “Steve”!) anyway, intending to disrupt the stuffy proceedings and honor his late wife’s wish of being cremated, all while upsetting grievers while draped in a get-up Langella charitably calls a “clown suit.” This could go two ways: either extreme liberal views will be flattered or stern conservative ones reinforced. But writer-director (and sometime
“Silicon Valley” actor) Matt Ross seeks a third way, all while ping-ponging between the two. Sometimes he idolizes Ben’s little world, with dreamy shots caked in Sigur Ros or at least Sigur Ros-knockoffs. But he’s always slipping in doubt, pointing out the many cracks in Ben’s logic and ethics. Mortensen is able to convey all Ben’s pros and cons without breaking a bead of sweat. He’s of a constitution that can be gentle and admirable then slip into sinister and hissable then back again by just being there in front of a camera. It could be a movie the usual people love and the usual people hate. Instead it asks everyone to look at it with great and exacting skepticism. MP

In “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick are actually funnier than Adam DeVine and Zac Efron, who are no slouches either. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

Bros create playful Craigslist ad. Bros go viral. Bros score a book deal. Bros (who are also bros, as in brothers) score a movie deal, too. The story of Mike and Dave Stangle is not fair and it doesn’t even play by the rules of the modern internet, when fun (or even deadly important) matters have a shelf life shorter than the stint of a new “SpiderMan actor. But there’s a kind of happy ending to this. The movie based on the Stangles’ Tucker Max-y cash-in book “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is so clearly divorced from the real deal it’s barely Tucker Max-y at all. It might even be progressive, if you ig-
nore things like an old school predatory lesbian and a masseuse rubbing his genitals all over a female client’s bare behind. The Stangles lucked into brief fame and unearned riches, but they’ve been rewarded with a movie that (mostly) upends their dudeish worldview — or at least just makes the ladies funnier than the gentlemen. The set-up is the same, mostly: Mike and Dave (a reliably self-mocking Zac Efron and a reliably mugging Adam DeVine) are degenerates infamous for attending weddings and events stag, then causing mayhem. Their family demands they bring dates to their sister’s wedding, so they start an online campaign to find partners. They settle on a pair of sisters, Alice and Tatiana (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, both reliably reliable), but only because they pretended to be nice and together. In truth, they’re both hot messes who can’t hold down

jobs and only took the gig to score a free Hawaiian vacay. Gross-out sequences abound, but the real saving grace is its stars, who, judging from the source, are deďŹ nitely funnier than the Stangles ever were. All four leads spend much of the movie standing around ďŹ ring o whatever nonsense is on the top of their heads. The movie is not the Stangles’ opposite, exactly, but it doesn’t fall into the usual trap of pairing stern killjoy girls with zany guys. In fact, Alice and Tatiana are wilder and more hell-raising than their male counterparts — basically carbon copies of Ilana and Abbi from “Broad City,â€? which would be more vexing if they weren’t played by Kendrick and Plaza. This is a pure salvage job, and it usually just falls back on its actors ignoring the script’s dialogue. But given what they had to work with, what they’ve pulled o is downright Herculean.
“The Secret Life of Petsâ€? Director: Chris Renaud, Yarrow Chesney Voices of: Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet Rating: PG Just like a pet that gets antsy and tears up the apartment when you’re out, “The Secret Life of Petsâ€? has a destructive streak. It concerns a coterie of pets (dogs, cats, reptiles, a hawk) who band together to ďŹ nd their terrier friend Max (voice of Louis C.K.) and his new roommate Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who are trying to get home in the labyrinthine city. On their misadventures, the pets meet a gang of virulent sewer-dwelling animals who want to eviscerate humanity. (As the manic bunny Snowball, Kevin Hart really commits.) They hijack
MATT PRIGGE
buses and cause massive car crashes on the Brooklyn Bridge, and occasionally they pee on the oor. The ďŹ rst 20 or so minutes are rough/ru going for adults. We meet the owners and pets (notably Lake Bell as a chubby tabby cat and Jenny Slate as love-struck Pomeranian Gidget), and the ďŹ lmmakers establish that the movie will be relentlessly fast and loud. There’s barking, blathering, a bombastic (but sometimes lovely) score and so much screaming. But “Petsâ€? gets pretty good when it gets really weird, starting with a scene of feral cats descending into an alley, led by Steve Coogan’s mangy limey cat with bulbous, acid-colored eyes and pointy ears perforated by battle wounds. The tone veers from silly, bland kids’ stu to jarring action scenes and a violent, almost bleak sense of humor.
(A monstrous snake is crushed three times and at one point erupts in ames, like something out of a “Monty Pythonâ€? skit.) Moments of ridiculous action are deadened by way too many stale, slapstick gags. Some recurring jokes (a fallen sewer soldier named Ricky we only hear about, vaguely) reward adults, while jokes about Brooklyn and hipsters feel lazy, tossed in for parents who occasionally read the Sunday Times and only have a vague idea of millennial parlance. The character designs are decent and the swirling water and looming city skyline are gorgeous, but something about “Petsâ€? feels overly familiar. Louis C.K. doesn’t work — his comedic brilliance relies on underselling, delivering with distinct cadences, rhythms, word choice. That makes him an ineective choice for a tiny dog in a kid’s movie. NASA team members Geo Yoder, Diane Brown, Scott Bolton and Rick Nybakken celebrate the successful Juno mission to Jupiter. GETTY IMAGES
Juno gives 2016 a rare piece of good news This weekend, my phone started buzzing with alerts. My ďŹ rst reaction was a drop in my stomach, thinking it was going to be more bad news about shootings or bombings or yet another celebrity death. I almost didn’t look. Curiosity, however, got the better of me, and I braced myself for more horror. This time, it was good news: an announcement that NASA had successfully gotten the Juno spacecraft into orbit around Jupiter. I yelped! I teared up! My heart soared! That sounds dramatic, and yes I’m a total space nerd, but it matters. It’s not just about the things we’re going to learn about the planet, from moisture levels to what its core is made of to info about the rings. It’s about hope. I don’t know about you guys, but there has been so much that’s been disheartening

this year. I actually tweeted something to the eect of how 2016 should do anatomically impossible things to itself. To be fair, it does seem like there has been far more bad than good this year. It’s been hard to believe in the goodness of humanity, which makes news like this matter even more welcome. Science aside, hearing about the success of this mission, even before we know what we’ll learn, makes one believe that we really can reach beyond our troubles here on Earth and straight for the stars. I’m trying to imagine how the NASA engineers felt as they waited to see if the
mission was a success. It was a ďŹ ve-year trip followed by another 48 minutes. (The length of time it takes for messages to be relayed back home.) And then it was done! All this work for a 53-day orbit around the planet, which will give us pictures and information about one of our neighbors — well, it’s pretty inspiring. NASA released a series of images taken as Juno approached the planet, showing its moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto for the very ďŹ rst time. And it’s breathtaking. Forget movies about space. (Well, no, actually keep making them.) Forget all the bad news for a little while and revel in learning something about our universe. Something that is bigger than religion and politics and who said what about whom. Congratulations, NASA, and hello there, Jupiter! It’s lovely to meet you!
Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have ďŹ nally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry outâ€? and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oilâ€? and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip
joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can ďŹ nd out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. Amber Rose says she’s no stranger to being called a “slut. The model and activist has been dealing with that word’s ugly assumptions for more than 15 years, and today takes the initiative to fight the social stigma and let young women embrace their sexuality. Rose hopes to continue the movement through “The Amber Rose Show, a weekly talk show premiering July 8 on VH1. The series, produced by Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw’s Stage 29, features Rose and celeb friends discussing parenting, relationships, friendships, pop culture, race and entrepreneurship. She chatted with us about the show, this year’s SlutWalk and taking over “Loveline following a long list of male hosts.  Can you tell us more about the VH1 show? It’s going to be really fun. We’ll have a sex therapist and we’ll talk to audience members and have callers
call in to ask relationship questions. We’ll try to answer questions to best of our ability. I’m going to have celebrity guests come on, and they can talk about what’s going on in their life and I will interview them as well. Any hints as to who the celeb guests might be? Not yet. I love the element of surprise. How does it feel like to be the ďŹ rst female host of “Lovelineâ€?? It’s really wonderful and cool. I have a different perspective. It’s really cool to hear what people go through and their stories about their relationships. For listeners, they could hear what other people are going through and call in. I always bring it back to myself to see if I can relate to it. If not, I can give an educated point of view. Speaking of female pioneers, what’s your relationship with Amy Schumer? Are you friends? We’re definitely friends, but she lives in New York and I live in L.A. so we don’t really see each other like that. When we can, we hang out —
and obviously, we work together. I’ve done her show twice and did the MTV Movie Awards where I got to make out with her, which was awesome. She’s a great kisser. Will she come on your show? We’ll have to see. You were the driving force behind L.A.’s edition of the SlutWalk last October. What can we expect from this year’s event? Well, there’s definitely more awareness. I did so much press for my SlutWalk, and it was just very frustrating because it was mostly guys. This year one of my dear friends, French Montana, donated a percentage of the proceeds from his album to my SlutWalk. He believes in it and he understands what I’m doing for women. He has a mom and a good relationship with his family, and he wanted to jump on board and show that men can be involved as well with bringing awareness. Do you feel like slut shaming is still an issue? Slut shaming could go on forever, just like racism. So we need to change people’s minds. Not

everyone can be as aware, and that’s unfortunate. That’s where I come in. It’s crazy that I’m a feminist but my entire crew is men. I have one woman working for me and it wasn’t on purpose. I think God did that for a reason, because all the men who were extreme slutshamers started working for me and now they’re all about the SlutWalk. They know proper etiquette and what not to call a woman and how to treat a woman. They live a different life now because they work with me and they’re my family. They’re enlightened.

You’ve said that you want a second child with Wiz Khalifa — does that mean you’re possibly going to get back together? It’ll just take time, and things can happen. And if not, we have a beautiful son together. We’re going to be friends and family forever no matter what. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. We’re just going to try and see what it is. You’ve been linked to names like Nick Young and Chris Brown, among others. Do you see any future with these men or are you strictly friends? I’ve never dated, kissed
or had sex with any of those guys. I don’t know Nick Young that well. I’ve seen him out a couple times. He seems like a good, nice guy, but I really don’t know him. Chris Brown is like my brother. I did one of my first music videos with Chris Brown back in 2009. We have never been romantic at all. I hang out with a lot of guys and I’m very close to a lot of guys, and people just assume that I literally have sex with them all day, and it’s not like that at all.  “The Amber Rose Show premieres July 8 on VH1 at 11 p.m. ET.

All the fun you can have on one wheel comes to Governors Island for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-4. This event isn’t just for pros, either — anyone can test their balance in the learn-to-ride area. A DJ will keep the energy high throughout the day.
Come Out & Play Field Day This isn’t the dodgeball hell you remember from elementary school. On July 9, Governors Island will host a play day featuring games created by some of today’s most innovative designers from around the world. Some games feature technology (if you can’t make people put down their smartphones, right?) while others rely on classic toys used in new ways. And then there’s Tough Bubbler, in which players must navigate an obstacle course while inside a giant inflatable ball.

City of Water Day On July 16, explore the best that New York City’s waters have to offer with free kayaking, fishing demonstrations, boat tours and paddleboarding. For those who would rather stay on land, there will also be live music, food vendors and all-ages activities. Stick around for the cardboard kayak race: Teams will have two hours to construct a cardboard boat that will compete in open water for the fastest time — though the biggest challenge may just be not sinking!
The Hills Watch the “likes” roll in once you can climb this long-anticipated feature of Governors Island, which opens to the public July 19. Rising 70 feet, the grassy, sprawling hills have panoramic views of the Financial District and the Statue of Liberty. Would you believe enjoying something called Starfleet Academy Experience requires no knowledge of “Star Trek or being a kid? Probably not, but that’s what the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has accomplished with its new interactive exhibit, opening July 9. Located inside of a 12,000-square-foot tent on Pier 86, the premise is that you’re a cadet enlisting in the “Star Trek version of officer candidate school. The real treasure is what at first glance appears the least interesting. At each station are large consoles that pose a five-question Starfleet recruitment quiz to assess a cadet’s aptitude for the particular field. “You are trapped in orbit around
an alien planet. It’s draining your ship’s power. How do you use the little power you have left? “You’re studying a botany sample and discover that it doubles in size every hour. What do you do? These may seem like practical questions, but the multiple-choice answers reveal there’s no right or wrong approach; instead, they’re actually meant to be a test of character. Nowhere is this more clear than in the final command zone, which involves stepping onto a replica of the Enterprise’s bridge to take the Kobayashi Maru test. The famously unwinnable scenario from the series involves rescuing the crew of a stranded ship while fending off Klingon attackers and keeping

path; occasionally, only brute force saved the day. Knowing when each approach works, and the willingness to choose it, is what counts here at Starfleet, too. When’s the last time a museum exhibit taught you something about yourself ? At the start of the experience, cadets put on a wristband to record their answers to all of the tests, which are tallied at a final kiosk that recommends which field they would be best suited for. Unsurprisingly, this reporter’s results pointed overwhelmingly to communications. Good thing, too — my secondary option is the Tactical Team, and red is just not my color.

The restaurant is now in the hands of executive chef Anthony Mongeluzzi and maintains its seafood focus, contrary to co-owner Ravi DeRossi’s animalwelfare-driven mission to veganize many of his 14 other bars and restaurants in the city.  The new Bergen Hill is a continuation of the project that DeRossi and his business partner, Interpol guitarist Daniel Kessler, started in Brooklyn. The menu has just 14 items, which includes new vegetarian options created with the input of DeRossi’s Avant Garden team, like a fennel hummus toast with orange, walnut and feta, but remains dominated by summer-perfect seafood dishes and crudos. DeRossi could be a happy man just shuttling between his various properties around the city, but we asked where he likes to go off the clock.

Brock Lesnar will battle Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on Saturday night. GETTY IMAGES
Lesnar ready to shock his bosses WWE is not promoting Lesnar’s return to the Octagon. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us
Brock Lesnar has heard the criticism. He has. And the one-time UFC heavyweight champion has a response. “I really don’t give a s—,” Lesnar said during a conference call with reporters to promote Saturday’s UFC 200 payper-view (10 p.m.). Lesnar will meet Mark Hunt in the semimain event of one of the most stacked cards in the promotion’s history.
The show, which will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, is headlined by Daniel Cormier, who will defend his light-heavyweight championship against former title holder Jon “Bones” Jones. For Lesnar, the fight will be his first professional MMA bout since losing to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 on Dec. 30, 2011. He signed with World Wrestling Entertainment in 2012, and has become one of the promotion’s top attractions. Lesnar came close to re-signing with UFC in 2015 before agreeing to a long-term extension with WWE. In announc-
ing that agreement on ESPN, Lesnar told Michelle Beadle he was “officially closing the door on MMA.” “It is hard to talk about,” Lesnar said at the time. He later added, “This wasn’t an overnight decision. This was a long and heartfelt decision. You weigh out the pros. You weigh out the cons. At the end of the day … Vince McMahon put the offer on the table that I couldn’t refuse. That’s really what it comes down to. Business and money and health and well being. I’ve been on both sides of the spectrum. I’ve been in a bad position with my health. I’ve been in a bad
UFC 200 card Daniel Cormier vs. Jon “Bones” Jones Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne
position with my money. Now I’m in a great position with both and I’m happy.” So, what changed? Why would Lesnar step
back into the Octagon? Especially against a fighter who has 11 of his 12 professional wins — including his last two fights — via knockout or technical knockout? “I feel really good,” Lesnar said. “Training camp is going great. I’m happy. I’m happy with my life. I’m happy with everything. Since I left the Octagon after I [was] beat by Overeem and kind of forced out of the cage by my illness, it haunted me for a long time. So what do you do? I want to get back in the cage and have fun with it. This is all about having fun. I’m not looking past this fight. I’m taking it one day at a time,
one training session at a time, and looking forward to July 9.” Whereas Lesnar is excited about the fight, it appears at least one WWE executive does not share his enthusiasm. Stephanie McMahon, chief brand officer of WWE, and the daughter of WWE scion Vince McMahon, told Business Insider in a recent interview that the company is “not supporting the fight, necessarily but, again, [UFC] is not a competitor to” the professional wrestling company. When told of McMahon’s comments, Lesnar replied, “I don’t care what she says.”

THE 2016-17 NBA SEASON WILL STILL HAVE TO BE PLAYED When you are at the pinnacle of something, you have peers that want your spot. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are less than a month removed from being crowned NBA champions and the rest of the NBA is already working on ways to dethrone them. Exhibit A: The Golden State Warriors adding Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant joining Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson has NBA fans drooling over what this group of players could potentially accomplish on the floor together. On paper, the addition of Durant makes the Warriors look as though they could average 140 points per game. The likelihood of that happening is slim, but as long as they stay healthy the Warriors will be one of the most exciting teams to ever watch. The Warriors will likely make a run to the NBA Finals again next year, but this move is much bigger for Durant than it is the Warriors. Everyone who

wants to succeed needs to make tough decisions. This was by far the biggest decision Kevin Durant has ever had to make as an NBA player. Durant was
Oklahoma City’s baby and he grew to be an MVP both on and off the court for that organization. But sometimes you outgrow your beginnings, learn from them, take them with you and use them in your next endeavor. Just like many of us out there, KD was looking to put himself in a better position and take the next step in his career. But leaving a place you call home is always emotional, and it was — for sure — not an easy call for Kevin to make. It is going to be interesting to see how Steve Kerr and the Warriors’ coaching staff use Durant in their system. We need not forget that there is only one ball on the court. Durant is a clear upgrade from Harrison Barnes and will shoot the lights out, but Kerr can’t have Durant standing in the corner taking jumps shots all game. Durant is too talented and you have to take advantage of those skills. What Kerr has working for in his favor is that
the Warriors have no qualms about sharing the basketball. When the Warriors have possession the ball is moving, and as long as KD sees that the ball has got to move the Warriors could smash through their ceiling. With this acquisition the Warriors most definitely look like they will be heading back to the NBA Finals, but the games still have to be played. The Warriors will be tested by teams at times during the regular season and the NBA Championship is not handed out to the team that acquired the biggest name in free agency. If last season is any indication, the Warriors should have no problem working Durant into the rotation during the regular season. The reason Durant wanted to play for the Warriors is simply because they have the grit of champions, something Oklahoma City did not have. Safe to say, as if it was not before — the future looks bright for the Warriors.
