RYAN SAYS CLINTON MAY HAVE GOTTEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT FROM FBI

1

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Wednesday that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton may have been given preferential treatment from the FBI in its investigation of her use of a private email server and should not receive classified information during her campaign. “It looks like it to me,” Ryan told reporters when asked if the former secretary of state received preferential treatment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Tuesday it would not recommend charges regarding Clinton’s email.

US TO FUND ZIKA VIRUS STUDY OF US OLYMPIC TEAM

The U.S. National Institutes of Health said it will fund a study to monitor U.S. athletes, coaches and members of the Olympic Committee staff for exposure to Zika virus while in Brazil, with the hope of gaining better understanding of how it persists in the body and the potential risks it poses. The study, announced on Tuesday, seeks to determine the incidence of Zika virus infection, identify potential risk factors for infection, evaluate how long the virus remains in bodily fluids, and study reproductive outcomes of Zika-infected participants. Brazil, which has been hardest hit by the mosquito-borne virus spreading across the Americas, will host the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next month. REUTERS

US SANCTIONS NORTH KOREAN LEADER, OTHERS, OVER RIGHTS ABUSES

The United States sanctioned top North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, for what it said were “notorious abuses of human rights.” It was the first time the United States had identified the North Korean leader as a direct target for sanctions, and diplomats say the decision will incense the nuclear-armed country, where the leader is considered infallible. The sanctions, which target property and other assets within U.S. jurisdiction, extend to 10 other individuals and five entities, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement. “Under Kim Jong Un, North Korea continues to inflict intolerable cruelty and hardship on millions of its own people, including extrajudicial killings, forced labor, and torture,” Acting Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam J. Szubin said in the statement. REUTERS

“Are you all ready for a political revolution?” shouted Lev Hirschorn, an organizer with “Reclaim Philadelphia,” to a group of about 40 activists under the sweltering midday heat on Wednesday ahead of a protest of the Democratic National Convention. Then he fainted. Temperatures reached 93 degrees in Philadelphia, but that didn’t stop members of Reclaim Philadelphia from marching through the streets of Center City on Wednesday to call for the resignations of Democratic National Convention Host Committee chair Ed Rendell, special adviser David Cohen, and finance chair Daniel Hilferty. “We’re taking our message to these men — these three white old dudes who think they represent this city,” said activist John Lazarz. Hirschorn, who recovered after a rest and some

water, was back with the protesters 30 minutes later as they marched through the streets, chanting slogans like, “DNC reveal your donors! We don’t like your corporate owners!” and “Hey hey! Ho ho! The host committee has got to go!” “Reclaim Philadelphia” is a group of former Bernie Sanders supporters who ahead of the DNC have a new mission much like that of the candidate they supported: bringing the Democratic Party into line with their values. “Most of the people here were Bernie Sanders voters, but this is bigger than Bernie,” Hirschorn said. “Corporations, CEOs, millionaires, billionaires have way too much influence on the political system. They can pass an agenda that is opposed not just by a majority of Americans, but by the vast majority of Democrats.” They want the DNC officials to resign because they have not publicly released the donors funding

the convention. The activists said they believe confidential donations might influence the party platform, which is being hashed out in Florida ahead of the convention. “If they’re not hiding anything, why do they not show them?” asked activist Xelba Gutiérrez. In a letter sent on June 22 to the DNC demanding the resignations, Reclaim Philadelphia cited the men’s involvement in various causes that they portrayed as opposed to the Democratic Party. Hilferty, a CEO of Independence Blue Cross, they said, lobbied against Obamacare. Cohen is executive vice president of Comcast, which they said “enjoys criminal levels of tax exemption.” Rendell, meanwhile, was criticized for advocating the development of Philadelphia as an energy hub, among other accusations. “Cynically playing both sides of the aisle while spending millions to scut-

tle the highest goals of the party they represent, Mr. Rendell, Mr. Hilferty and Mr. Cohen are uniquely unqualified to serve on the host committee,” they wrote. Protesters on Wednesday marched to the Comcast Center, Independence Blue Cross offices, and the offices of Ballard Spahr LLP, where Rendell is a partner, to deliver letters requesting the three men resign. The state Office of Open Records ordered the DNC Host Committee to release the records by July 14 in response to a request filed by the Philly Declaration news blog. The DNC Host Committee said they don’t intend to release the financial records until 60 days after the convention, in compliance with Federal Election Commission regulations. “We are fully in compliance with the law, and to state otherwise is to not understand the facts,” said spokeswoman Anna Adams-Sarthou. But like Sanders, the Reclaim Philadelphia activists believe “transparency” should come before the convention. “The money of politics trickles down to influence the issues we are trying to press on,” Gutiérrez said.

MACE ON A BUS Suspect held in mace attack on SEPTA driver Philadelphia police have arrested a woman who allegedly sprayed mace at a SEPTA bus driver and a passenger in a wheelchair Tuesday. Around 7:45 p.m., a woman attempted to hail the Route 47 bus midblock near Fifth and Olney streets. According to 6ABC, the driver proceeded to the next stop, about half a block away, operating on SEPTA protocol.

The disgruntled passenger got to the stop at the 5600 block of North Fifth Street and boarded as the bus driver was helping a passenger in a wheelchair. Authorities said the woman pushed the driver and sprayed mace in her face. “An argument occurs during which the angry rider whips out mace and sprays the operator and accidentally sprayed the wheelchair passenger,” Transit

Locally designed, unionmade and decorated goods celebrating the Democratic National Convention and Philadelphia are now on sale at a new pop-up shop in the Comcast Center. “Authentic,” was how Philadelphia City Representative Sheila Hess described the merchandise, “and stylish, too.” “It’s our own local artists who designed it and came up with their own creative context to showcase Philadelp h i a , ” Hess said at a ribboncutting for the shop, which was opened by the DNC Host Committee on Wednesday. “You won’t find these designs in the local tourist shops around town.” The wares, ranging from clothing and pins, to magnets and other goodies, are designed to be a little bit fancier than the go-to miniature Liberty Bell souvenir for which Philadelphia is renowned. “See. Having a wallet, sleeping, carrying Skittles, blasting loud music, selling loose cigarettes, playing with a toy gun at age 12, shopping at Wal-Mart, failing to signal while driving — and now selling CDs outside a convenience store — can get a black person killed by police in America. The recent death of Alton Sterling, a 37-yearold black man from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was the 558th extrajudicial killing of an American this year by police, according to The Guardian US. The numbers have been replayed in headlines and on television screens across the world. Blacks in America are disproportionately killed and targeted by police officers more than any other racial demographic. Some might say, “Why do you have to talk about race?” But ask yourself, why does it seem to be a recurring theme in the deaths of hundreds of individuals in this country? I will no longer feel uncomfortable calling it out. What we are witnessing is an uncontrolled, unjustified police killing of civilians. If you cannot grieve or admit that something is inherently wrong with the current state of law enforcement when 558 people are killed without a trial, then we can’t be friends. As a young black man in a major city like Philadelphia, the odds that I can be stopped and frisked and/ or become a victim of a senseless execution by police skyrockets. It doesn’t matter the reason — there’s always one to be given. But what is problematic is the way everyday white Americans choose to look the

other way, which makes this even worse. Too often I see my social media timeline reflect a great divide between those who speak out about these issues and those who don’t. Often, a vast majority of my white peers don’t say anything at all — and when they do, they often choose to play devil’s advocate or try to justify the killings with some arbitrary protocol to make them feel as

to spend a great deal of time defending the dead while still mourning them. The lack of consideration from white co-workers and peers during times like these reminds me of the real problem with race in this country — folks still don’t want to acknowledge it. They would rather misuse the term “racist” and attempt to dismiss the legitimate concerns of the distressed. If you are white and you’re reading this, admitting there’s a problem is the first step. It’s no longer up for debate — this is an institutional problem that is racially skewed. People are dying. Families are being torn apart from the trauma. The father, mother, sibling, child and loved one of a fellow American is no longer alive to give their side of the story. Now is not the time to ignore the harsh reality. It would be humane to acknowledge and empathize, while also hoping for justice.

“Blacks in America are disproportionately killed and targeted by police officers more than any other racial demographic.” though the world is fair. Coincidentally, we seem to never have these debates when white people are killed unlawfully by police officers — which is rare in comparison. In fact, we live in a society where black people have

Brexit’s greatest dangers may still lie ahead The Brexit vote shocked investors and triggered $2 trillion in losses in global stock markets the day after the referendum. Federal Reserve policymakers decided in June that interest rate hikes should stay on hold until they have a handle on the consequences of Britain’s vote on EU membership, according to the minutes of the Fed’s June policy meeting released on Wednesday. The minutes of the June 14-15 meeting, which took place ahead of the June 23 referendum in which Britons voted to leave the European Union, showed widespread unease over the so-called “Brexit” vote, including among voting members on the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee. “Members generally agreed that, before assessing whether another step in removing monetary accommodation was warranted, it was prudent to wait for additional data on the consequences of the U.K. vote,” according to the minutes. Worries have only intensified since the vote and Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo cited the rise in uncertainty on Wednesday when he argued for holding off on rate hikes until inflation had turned decisively higher. At the June policy meeting, policymakers also cited a severe slowdown in hiring by U.S. employers as a reason for leaving interest rates steady last month, the minutes showed. Anxieties remain with investors, with global financial conditions tightening as investors anticipate it could take years before Britain and the EU agree

to new rules on finance, trade and immigration. On Wednesday, U.S. benchmark and longdated Treasury yields hit record lows, with some investors betting the Fed would keep rates on hold through 2017. “We would need to see a few months of good data … to support a hike,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. The dollar, which has gained more than two percent against a basket of currencies since the Brexit vote and could weigh on U.S. exporters, weakened slightly following publication of the minutes. Before the British vote, the Fed had signaled two interest rate hikes would likely be needed this year to keep the U.S. economy from eventually overheating. But since the British referendum, several Fed policymakers have said the uncertainty warrants caution, including New York Fed President William Dudley who said on Tuesday the Fed

needed to be patient on rate increases and that it was too soon to know the fallout from the British decision. A severe slowdown in hiring during May and weak business investment even outside the sagging energy sector had raised questions about the U.S. outlook even before the Brexit vote. Still, in the minutes of the June meeting, many Fed policymakers who participated in the policy discussion stressed the sharpness of the hiring slowdown could be statistical noise, and most argued the economy would be ready for rate increases unless a financial or economic shock knocks America off course, according to the minutes. Since the Brexit vote, the British pound has plunged 13 percent against the dollar, including a 1 percent decline on Wednesday, and investors and policymakers are watching out for further signs of financial stress that could hit economic growth in America and worldwide. REUTERS

“None of us really knows the magnitude and I doubt there will be a moment when people say Brexit is done. ... There is a good bit of uncertainty.” Tarullo

Obama says he will keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan until 2017 Obama said the role of U.S. forces in Afghanistan will remain unchanged: training and advising Afghan police and troops, and supporting counterterrorism missions against the Taliban and other groups. President Barack Obama, calling Afghanistan’s security situation precarious, said on Wednesday he will keep U.S. troop levels there at 8,400 through the end of his administration rather than reducing them to 5,500 by year’s end as previously planned. Obama’s plan still calls for a reduction in U.S. troop levels from the current roughly 9,800, but not as much as previously

planned. Obama, who took office in 2009 pledging to wind down the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he had ended America’s combat mission in Afghanistan. But he acknowledged that security concerns persist. “The security situation in Afghanistan remains precarious, Obama said. “The Taliban remains a threat. They’ve gained ground in some places. Taliban forces now hold more territory in Afghanistan than at any time since the 2001 U.S.led invasion, according to recent United Nations estimates. The Islamic State group has also established a small presence in Afghanistan. Obama’s decision, which came after a review submitted last month by the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Army General John Nicholson, drew

some criticism inside and outside his administration. Some Pentagon officials said that it does nothing to address the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. “It’s disappointing that the administration thinks that troop numbers are a substitute for a more comprehensive strategy, said a U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This is neither the reduction that the White House seems to have wanted nor the current numbers that don’t seem to be sufficient to deal with the security problem. Mac Thornberry, the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, criticized what he said was a new cap on U.S. troop levels. US to probe shooting of black man by police in Louisiana The incident, parts which were caught on a bystander’s video, follows widespread protests in the United States over deadly force by police against minorities in cities including Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore and New York. The U.S. Justice Department will lead an investigation into the fatal police shooting of a black man in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after family and protesters demanded an independent probe, the state’s governor said on Wednesday. About 200 protesters gathered Tuesday night chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot and “Black lives matter after Alton

Sterling, 37, was shot and killed during an altercation with two white police officers at about 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities said. “I have very serious concerns. The video is disturbing, to say the least, Gov. John Bel Edwards told reporters. He said he had spoken with Sterling’s family and that they joined him in calling on protesters to be peaceful. The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will join in the investigation. The two white officers were identified as Blane Salamoni, a four-year veteran, and Howie Lake, a three-year veteran, who were both put on administrative leave, Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said at a news conference.

Early Tuesday morning, the officers responded to a disturbance call from someone who said a black man wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a convenience store had threatened him with a gun, Dabadie said. “When officers arrived Sterling was armed and the altercation ensued that resulted in the loss of his life, Dabadie said. The cellphone video of the incident, which has

been widely shown on media, shows an officer confronting a black man in a red shirt in the parking lot of the Triple S Food Mart, and ordering him to get on the ground. The video showed the two officers tackling the man to the pavement, one pulling a gun from his holster and pointing it at the man’s chest, then firing a shot. At least three gunshots were heard, although the camera jerks away from the scene. Police did not say how many shots were fired. The body cameras of both officers became dislodged during the altercation, but continued recording audio and video, police said at the news conference. The recordings and other videos will be reviewed in the investigation, Dabadie said. The owner of the Triple S Food Mart, Abdullah

Muflahi, who said he witnessed the shooting, told The Advocate newspaper that Sterling was armed but was not holding his gun or touching his pockets during the encounter. He said police retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the shooting. Residents said Sterling was a fixture in the neighborhood where he sold CDs. A rally that began at the site of the shooting on Tuesday afternoon swelled to a couple of hundred people overnight. Protesters chanted “no justice, no peace, and occasionally blocked traffic. A makeshift memorial at the scene included notes to “Big Alton. Cameron Sterling, Alton’s 15-year-old son, broke down crying at a news conference on Wednesday morning as his mother spoke. REUTERS

BRIEF Thirteen states ask court to halt transgender bathroom policy Thirteen states that have sued the Obama administration over its policy on transgender access to bathrooms asked a federal court in Texas to prevent the administration from enforcing the policy while their lawsuit proceeds. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton ďŹ led the motion in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on behalf of the state coalition. “Schools are facing the potential loss of funding for simply exercising the authority to implement the policies that best protect their students,â€? Paxton said in a statement. The 13-state coalition’s lawsuit is one of several statebased challenges to the federal government’s May directive that public schools must allow transgender students to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity or face the loss of federal funding. The issue has thrown transgender rights into the national spotlight and enraged social conservatives who say federal civil rights protections encompass biological sex, not gender identity. REUTERS

Clinton visits AC boardwalk to hit Trump on bankruptcies Clinton, standing next to the shuttered Trump Plaza casino, said Trump routinely profited from the financial ruin of workers in the economically depressed resort town. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited the famous boardwalk in Atlantic City to highlight Republican rival Donald Trump’s casino

bankruptcies, warning he would bring the same cutthroat approach to managing the U.S. economy. “The people he’s trying to convince to vote for him are the same people he’s been exploiting for years — working people, small-business people,” Clinton said. Clinton said Trump’s casino bankruptcies and numerous complaints against him by contractors showed he cannot be trusted to set economic policy from the White House. “He makes over-the-top

promises and says if people trust in him, put their faith in him, he’ll deliver,” she said. “Then everything falls apart, people get hurt, and Donald gets paid.” The Trump Plaza was one of four casinos Trump once owned in Atlantic City. He left the city after his last bankruptcy. Clinton frequently uses criticism of Trump’s business record to illustrate a principle campaign theme — that the wealthy New Yorker is only interested in boosting his financial bottom line, and not concerned about the econom-

Clinton reminded supporters who gathered on the boardwalk under a boiling sun, within steps of the city’s beach, that Trump had promised to “do for the country what I did for my business.” She said Trump intentionally ran up hundreds of millions of debt on his companies, borrowed at high rates, defaulted on the loans, and left in the lurch the workers and contractors who relied on his casinos for income. U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee raised nearly $51 million for his White House campaign in June, after he launched his first aggressive effort at raising cash, Trump’s organization reported on Wednesday. The most recent haul dwarfs the $3.1 million the Trump campaign raised in May. That low number prompted widespread concern among Republicans that the New York businessman, a newcomer to politics, would be unable to compete with Democrat Hillary Clinton’s massive fundraising operation. For this month’s total, fundraising emails circulated by the campaign brought in $26 million, in

addition to more than $25 million raised in conjunction with the Republican National Committee through joint fundraising events in June and the last week of May. Trump largely selffunded his primary campaign that made him the presumptive Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 election. He personally contributed $3.8 million this month, the campaign said, which was not included in the fundraising total reported on Wednesday. REUTERS

THE CRUMBLING TRUST FACTOR Okay, so Hillary Clinton won’t be charged with a crime, won’t be put on trial, and certainly won’t be starring in a reality show version of “Orange is the New Black.” And plenty of legal analysts say based on their assessment of the evidence against the former sec of state, the FBI’s decision not to prosecute was correct. But make no mistake: When it came to doing the public’s business from a private email server in her house, her professional conduct was found overwhelmingly, undeniably and egregiously wrong — not by some vast right-wing conspiracy — but by the Democratic administration she served. The facts say as a member of President Obama’s cabinet she broke with standard operating procedures, was careless with national

security and then deceptive about it. I realize seeing this in print or online will infuriate many Democrats who will no doubt jump onto Twitter to excoriate me. Two things: Please be specific — which lake? And leave room for some of the Trump followers because they hate me too for pointing out his many falsehoods. I don’t care. Whether you like a candidate, intend to vote for him or her — of even if you think he or she is sometimes unfairly attacked — you need to face up to a painful truth. Both major contenders in this election are playing fast

and loose with the truth. Of course some are going to shriek, “False equivalency! My candidate lies, but not as often as that other snake!” On any given day you may be right. Congratulations. But to borrow a phrase from Clinton herself: “What difference at this point does it make?” The evidence and the polls say many voters face a dreadful choice this fall between two candidates they have good reasons to mistrust. This does not mean picking one is futile. Who knows? When all is said and done, perhaps we’ll wind up with the greatest president of modern times. But we will have to find some way to measure that, because when either candidate asks us to take his or her word, we now know for sure we can’t.

Pistorius has already served 12 months in prison for her death. But the original manslaughter conviction was increased to murder by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal last year. South African Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius was sent back to jail for six years on Wednesday for murdering Reeva Steenkamp, less than half the 15 year minimum term sought by prosecutors. Judge Thokozile Masipa, whose sentence at the initial manslaughter trial was criticized by women’s groups as too lenient, said she had accepted the

defense argument that a lesser punishment was appropriate. “Public opinion may be loud and persistent but it can play no role in the decision of this court, Masipa said. “I am of the view that a long term in prison will not serve justice. Pistorius, who stood impassively as the sentence was read out, hugged members of his legal team and chatted briefly with his sister Aimee before being led away by police. Women’s rights groups say Pistorius has received preferential treatment by the justice system compared to nonwhites and those without his wealth or international celebrity status. His backers say he did not intend to kill Steenkamp. The state and large sec-

Driverless cars need infrared technology to be safe, says auto supplier ZF Self-driving cars will need multiple detection systems including expensive infrared “lidar” technology if they are to be safe at high speeds, the chief executive of German autos supplier ZF Friedrichshafen said on Wednesday. Stefan Sommer’s remarks come a week after news that a 2015 Tesla Model S crashed into a trailer while on “autopilot” mode. Tesla has said it was hard for the car’s cameras to identify the white trailer against a bright Florida sky. “I have no details about the Tesla accident, so I can’t comment on it,” Sommer told a news conference to discuss ZF’s integration of rival TRW. But he added cameras relying on visual

signals alone were insufficient for safe autonomous driving at high speed. “For autonomous driving, we will need three core technologies: picture processing camera technology, short and long-range radar, and lidar,” Sommer said. Laser- or infraredbased lidar technology will help vehicle sensors pick up contours and contrasts of obstacles which normal cameras

are unable to detect, particularly in low light situations, he added. Lidar technology is currently too expensive to be incorporated in mass production vehicles, but investments into the technology will bring economies of scale and will likely lower the costs to a manageable level, Sommer said. Companies working on lidar technology include U.S.-based Velodyne. REUTERS

Adam DeVine, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Zac Efron destroy a Hawaii event in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.” TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

Adam DeVine buffs up (sort of ) The actor had to work out to play Zac Efron’s brother in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Adam DeVine admits he’s hungover. The L.A. premiere for “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” his new movie, was the night before, and at 32, his body is no longer able to handle boozing. As it happens, the fear of getting older is one of the themes in the new comedy. The “Workaholics” and “Pitch Perfect” actor and Zac Efron play hard-partying brothers who are forced by their parents to bring dates to their sister’s Hawaii destination wed-

On Zac I should ask about Zac Efron. It’s weird that people are still surprised when he’s funny. I’m like, “How many comedies does this guy have to do before someone gives him credit?” I honestly think of all the comedies he’s done, he’s the funniest as Dave. Dave is a lot like Zac in real life: He’s a sweet, sincere, nice guy — he’s just a f—ing sweetheart. He’ll say these dumb and insane things, but so earnestly. And he has the most annoyingly perfect abs.

ding, rather than go their usual stag. They wind up snagging two strangers (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza), who are secretly way wilder than

I think he cut me some slack on “Mike and Dave.” I was working so hard to get into great shape, because I was going to have to stand next to him. So I was working out the most I ever have in my life. When I’d work out with him he’d stop halfway through and say, “I’m good!” Then he stopped working out at all halfway through the production. I’m like, “I see what you’re doing: You’re so nice you’re going to put on a few pounds to meet me in the middle.” [Laughs] He got nowhere close, but I appreciated the offer.

they are. DeVine talks aging, becoming known for his musical chops and his very different fanbases. The 30s can be brutal

on the body. How has it been for you? The hangovers now last a full day. It used to be I could wake up and shake it off, like a dog shaking off water. Now it’s a full day of me dealing with it. But for the most part I’m loving my 30s. I’m starring in a movie in my 30s! The 30s have been great for me. You weren’t a musical person before “Pitch Perfect,” but even in “Mike and Dave” you’re slipping in a lot of song and dance bits. Where does that come from? I’ve always liked goofing off and singing and dancing and acting like a dummy. How did the “Pitch Perfect” team know you had this in you?

GETTY IMAGES

I’m pretty musical on “Workaholics.” Maybe that has something do with it. But when I went in [to audition] I didn’t know it was a singing movie. I thought it was a baseball movie. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. So I did the scene and they were like, “OK, what song did you prepare?” So I just sang the “Full House” theme song. That was the only song that popped into my head. I walked out of the audition saying, “There’s no way I’ve gotten it.” And somehow I did get it. And now it seems like I sing in absolutely every movie. [Laughs]

“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates Director: Jake Szymanski Stars: Zac Efron, Adam DeVine Rating: R

Bros create playful Craigslist ad. Bros go viral. Bros score a book deal. Bros (who are also bros, as in brothers) score a movie deal, too. The story of Mike and Dave Stangle is not fair and it doesn’t even play by the rules of the modern internet, when fun (or even deadly important) matters have a shelf life shorter than the stint of a new Spider-Man actor. But there’s a kind of happy ending to this. The movie based on the Stangles’ Tucker Max-y cash-in book “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is so clearly divorced from the real deal it’s barely Tucker Max-y at all. It might even be progressive, if you ignore things like an old school predatory lesbian and a masseuse rubbing his genitals all over a female client’s bare behind. The Stangles lucked into brief fame and unearned riches, but they’ve been rewarded with a movie that (mostly) upends their dudeish worldview — or at least just

In “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick are actually funnier than Adam DeVine and Zac Efron, who are no slouches either. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

makes the ladies funnier than the gentlemen. The set-up is the same, mostly: Mike and Dave (a reliably self-mocking Zac Efron and a reliably mugging Adam DeVine) are degenerates infamous for attending weddings and events stag, then causing mayhem. Their family demands they bring dates to their sister’s wedding, so they start an online campaign to ďŹ nd partners. They settle on a pair of sisters, Alice and Tatiana (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, both reliably reliable), but only

because they pretended to be nice and together. In truth, they’re both hot messes who can’t hold down jobs and only took the gig to score a free Hawaiian vacay. Gross-out sequences abound, but the real saving grace is its stars, who, judging from the source, are deďŹ nitely funnier than the Stangles ever were. All four leads spend much of the movie standing around ďŹ ring o whatever nonsense is on the top of their heads. The movie is not the Stangles’ opposite, exactly, but

it doesn’t fall into the usual trap of pairing stern killjoy girls with zany guys. In fact, Alice and Tatiana are wilder and more hell-raising than their male counterparts — basically carbon copies of Ilana and Abbi from “Broad City,â€? which would be more vexing if they weren’t played by Kendrick and Plaza. This is a pure salvage job, and it usually just falls back on its actors ignoring the script’s dialogue. But given what they had to work with, what they’ve pulled o is downright Herculean. Lake Bell voices a cat, Louis C.K. a terrier and Bobby Moynihan a pug in “The Secret Life of Pets. ILLUMINATION ENTERTAINMENT, UNIVERSAL PICTURES

“The Secret Life of Petsâ€? Director: Chris Renaud, Yarrow Chesney Voices of: Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet Rating: PG Just like a pet that gets antsy and tears up the apartment when you’re out, “The Secret Life of Petsâ€? has a destructive streak. It concerns a coterie of pets (dogs, cats, reptiles, a hawk) who band together to ďŹ nd their terrier friend Max (voice of Louis C.K.) and his new roommate Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who are trying to get home in the labyrinthine

city. On their misadventures, the pets meet a gang of virulent sewer-dwelling animals who want to eviscerate humanity. (As the manic bunny Snowball, Kevin Hart really commits.) They hijack buses and cause massive car crashes on the Brooklyn Bridge, and occasionally they pee on the oor. The ďŹ rst 20 or so minutes are rough/ru going for adults. We meet the owners and pets (notably Lake Bell as a chubby tabby cat and Jenny Slate as love-struck Pomeranian Gidget), and the ďŹ lmmakers establish that the movie will be relentlessly fast and loud. There’s barking, blathering, a bombastic (but

sometimes lovely) score and so much screaming. But “Petsâ€? gets pretty good when it gets really weird, starting with a scene of feral cats descending into an alley, led by Steve Coogan’s mangy limey cat with bulbous, acid-colored eyes and pointy ears perforated by battle wounds. The tone veers from silly, bland kids’ stu to jarring action scenes and a violent, almost bleak sense of humor. (A monstrous snake is crushed three times and at one point erupts in ames, like something out of a “Monty Pythonâ€? skit.) Moments of ridiculous action are deadened by way too many stale, slapstick gags. Some recurring jokes (a fallen

The character designs are decent and the swirling water and looming city skyline are gorgeous, but something about “Pets feels overly familiar. Louis C.K. doesn’t work — his comedic brilliance relies on underselling, delivering with distinct cadences, rhythms, word choice. That makes him an ineffective choice for a tiny dog in a kid’s movie. I’m from Dallas, so the Northeast was kinda scary for me to move to and it was the first city I moved to without a car, but there is so much going on. I love how much art is happening. out, it is just nice to walk, too. But Little Spoon was always my go-to place. OK. Back to music! What are your go-to jams in your downtime? I listen to pop music all the time. I did like the Weeknd but I feel like he is really misogynistic so I don’t listen to him as much. Drake I think has really incredible production as does Beyonce with “Lemonade.

I have a background in audio engineering so the production to me is really incredible. Does this have any inuence on your work? Actually, the new opera that I want to work on — my librettist is Jason Camm. I don’t know if you watch the HBO show “Girls,â€? but he is a writer on the show and he is my librettist. I’m half Chinese and he is Korean and we

wanted to do something that would put Asians on stage because we both feel like they are incredibly underrepresented. The story is also about needing to appear perfect in order to be accepted. I plan to use autotune because I really enjoy using electronics in my stuff. What does that look like in an opera production? I did it in my last opera, “Empty the House at

Curtis. I made premade soundtracks that were cued. I think sound design is superfun because you’re putting together sounds to make new ones. That’s how I’ll do that and then this time I’ll involve some live processing electronics so they will sing it then maybe I will take what they sung and manipulate it. outdoor brunches worth waking up for

In theory, al fresco brunch is a lovely idea. In practice, it can mean baking under the city sun on a cramped sidewalk, protecting your pancakes from pigeons and exhaust fumes. Looking for an outdoor table this Sunday? Here’s who’s doing it right. MONICA WEYMOUTH

221 N. Columbus Blvd., morganspier.com Presumably, the good people at Morgan’s Pier surveyed the deck one Saturday night and thought, “Good God, these guys are going to need a proper brunch in the morning.â€? They’re doing it all, from Belgian waes to smoked salmon omelets to fried cheese curds, right on the waterfront at the scene of last night’s tequila crime. When you think about it, it’s really the least they could do.

Wedge + Fig 160 N. Third St., wedgeandďŹ g.com Eectively brunch’s Ground Zero, Old City can feel like an obstacle course on Sunday mornings. Take a breather at Wedge + Fig, where a cozy backyard has made this low-key BYOB a neighborhood favorite. There’s a full menu of brunch and lunch classics, but if you can’t decide, take matters into your own hands and hit up the build-your-own breakfast sandwich bar.

In Riva 4116 Ridge Ave., in-riva.com O the beaten brunch path in East Falls, In Riva — which, appropriately enough, means “along the riverâ€?— oers views of the Schuylkill from a roomy deck. Inspired by Southern Italy, the weekend brunch menu is perfect if you have a breakfast naysayer at your table; in addition to the usual waes and eggs, you can choose from a full selection of pizzas, antipasti and salads.

Llama Tooth 1033 Spring Garden St., llamatooth.com With a spacious patio nuzzled up alongside a colorful two-story mural, quirky-cool Llama Tooth is an under-the-radar brunch hit tucked away on Spring Garden. The playful menu focuses on comfort food, so come hungry for dishes including PB&J-stued French toast, llama-tatas (frittatas, just more fun to say), and the Wakey Wakey burger, which is topped o with eggs and bakey. THINGS TO DO

EAT LIKE AN INSIDER

Marlo and Jason Dilks PROVIDED

It is said the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. This is definitely true for Marlo and Jason Dilks, a Philly couple who fell in love over food and have since opened four restaurants: SLiCE, a pizza shop with three locations, and fastcasual spot P’unk Burger. As if Marlo and Jason weren’t busy enough, they’ve just announced the opening of an organic SLiCE concept in Fishtown in August, which will be located at 431 E. Girard Ave. On top of that, they are expecting twins! Talk about worklife balance. To say we are impressed would be an understatement. The dynamic foodie duo are driven by family and plan to leave a restaurant to each of their daughters — Nadia, Capri,

Avana and Chiara. With so much love for family and food, we had to get the scoop from Marlo on the Dilks’ favorite places to eat in Philly when they’re not busy building their edible empire.

Best late night meal? “Our go-to late night meal is Chinese food. When I get late cravings, I head to Chinatown for David’s Mai Lai Wah (1001 Race St. #1, 215-627-2610). I usually start off with the bean curd soup and salt and pepper chicken wings followed by the vegetable mai fun noodles. So good.

Best meal under $10? “Good food doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

./4)#% /& 05",)# 3!,% /& 0%23/.!, 02/0%249

That’s why I love Revolution Taco’s fried curried cauliflower taco (2015 Walnut St., 267-639-5681). It has hot sauce, potato sticks, guac and cilantro, all for under $10. Plus it’s a good example of inexpensive, casual but top quality and chef-made [food].

Best hidden foodie gem? “Modo Mio (161 W. Girard Ave., 215-203-8707). It’s a cozy BYOB on Girard Avenue. It flies below the radar but the food is amazing. When you go, you have to get the Menu Turista. It’s their threecourse chef’s tastings menu.

Best place to dine alone?

“I’m a mom so I don’t often get a chance to eat alone, but if I had a day to myself I’d sit at the bar at Vernick (2031 Walnut St., 267-639-6644). I’d order a Tom Collins and the whole roasted fish with fennel and orange all for myself.

Place you always take or recommend for out-of-towners?

“When people ask for recommendations or when we have out of town guests, I always suggest two of my Italian Market faves. For breakfast you have to go to Sabrina’s (910 Christian St., 215-574-1599). The Barking Chihuahua is my favorite — it’s their version of a breakfast burrito but with marinara and, of course, I have to get the

Parmesan fries with that. Then for dinner head to Villa di Roma (936 S. 9th St., 215-592-1295). which is a family-owned Italian Market staple. Growing up in the Italian Market, I’ve been going there since I was a kid and now I can share some of my favorite dishes like Villa salad, fried asparagus and chicken Sicilian with my kids.

Go-to date spot? “For date night, my husband and I love Dmitri’s. It’s a cute and cozy BYOB. Start with the grilled octopus and then get the Greek-style bluefish. (795 S. 3rd St., 215-625-0556 or 944 N. 2nd St., 215-592 4550)

Best place to catch

up with friends?

“The Royal Tavern (937 East Passyunk Ave., 215389-6694). It’s a cool local bar, and when I say local I mean that the best thing about this place is that I can walk there from my house. It’s just around the corner.

Most Instagrammable restaurant? “Wm. Mulherin’s Son (1355 N. Front St., 267753-9478) is pretty new — it’s only been open for about a month. They have a great drink selection, small plates and great atmosphere, but it’s the building that makes it Instagram gold. The restaurant is a restored 1890s whiskey blending and bottling facility, so it makes for some really cool photos. JENNIFER LOGUE

sauce and cucumber, topped with buttery slices of foie gras and poblano pepper. The combination of flavors is exhilarating, but I recommend sharing this dish — it is very satiating, and foie gras is definitely something you definitely want to savor in good company. Looking for another bite to

complement your meal because you’re sharing? To help balance the deepness of the foie gras and BBQ eel, we ordered a side of caramelized plantains. The chipotle honey butter creates sweet and savory perfection that smoothed out with the addition of the refreshing crema fresca. No need for dessert at this lunch. Salud!

Leave your stress high and dry Check out these budget cruises to take this summer.

Falmouth, Jamaica; and three sea days Earlier this year, Liberty of the Seas went through a complete bow to stern renovation that included installation of the Perfect Storm, a trio of water slides designed for adrenaline junkies. Splashaway Bay, a kid’s water park, is also new to the ship as are specialty restaurants Sabor Modern Mexican and Giovanni’s Table.

Summertime cruise bargains — with passage available for as little as $68 per person per night — can still be had. Through August, major cruise lines are offering a plethora of low-cost sailings to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico. While many are aboard older, recently refurbished ships, you’ll also find some surprising discounts aboard soughtafter megaships.

Eagles schedule breakdown: Wins could be hard to come by in 2016 The Eagles, on paper, will have a tough go of it next season. LUKE MILLER @LukeFM7

sports@metro.us

It’s a shame, but there are no football games in July — we checked. While the whole country is salivating for Week 1 of the NFL season, we picked out the Eagles games that stand out this season to be particularly hyped — or worried — about. And yes, Week 1 made the list.

Week 1, Sept. 11, home against Cleveland

WEEK 4

THE EAGLES HAVE A VERY EARLY BYE WEEK, FALLING BETWEEN THEIR HOME GAME AGAINST PITTSBURGH AND ROAD GAME IN DETROIT. allows the Eagles to ease into their new systems, the Steelers will provide a baptism by fire, particularly for the defense. Offense is the new name of the game in Pittsburgh. Eric Rowe, Nolan Carroll and Leodis McKelvin will have their hands full running after Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant while the linebackers try to keep track of Le’Veon Bell escaping the backfield.

Doug Pederson gets about the best matchup he could hope for to start his career as a head coach. Most of the offensive players have worked together for a season now, but if the defenders need time to gel with each other and Jim Schwartz’s scheme, Cleveland will be the team to make mistakes against. Josh Gordon and Travis Benjamin are no longer around to trouble the defensive backs, and they can focus on rookie Corey Coleman. Of course, even if expectations for this season aren’t particularly lofty, there are expectations about playing the Browns at home. If this game goes poorly, it won’t be pretty in Philadelphia. Starting the season with a win over the team they swapped draft picks with for Carson Wentz would put a nice note on the trade.

Weeks 11 through 13, Nov. 20 through Dec. 4, at Seattle, vs. Green Bay, at Cincinnati

Week 3, Sept. 25, home against Pittsburgh

Due to the murderers row of teams above, the Eagles may well be riding a three game losing streak coming into

If the Browns game

This is a rough stretch. On paper, you can’t pick the Eagles as favorites over any of these teams, all playoff teams in 2015. It starts on the road across the country in one of the NFL’s toughest venues. We’ll have to wait and see if Seattle’s offense maintains the passing success it exploded into at the end of last season, but if it does these are all offenses that should test the Eagle’s retooled secondary in a big way. Taking one of three from this series ought to be viewed as a success, at least the way things stand right now.

Week 14, Dec. 11, home against Washington

this game. As reigning division champions, Washington is a strong contender for the title this season, and if the Eagles are competing for the division come December, this will be a huge game. The teams will have already played once, in Week 6 in Washington. Depending on how that game goes, they could come to Philadelphia hoping for their fifth win in a row over the Eagles. They have eliminated the Eagles from playoff contention the past two seasons, and in humiliating fashion in 2015. It’s about time the Eagles beat Washington.

Week 17, Jan. 1, home against Dallas After a bizarre season where the Eagles were done playing Dallas by Thanksgiving, the Cowboys return to their rightful place at the close of the Eagles’ schedule. Neither Philadelphia nor Dallas had the 2015 season they expected. How 2016 will unfold is equally unclear for both teams. This game may have a lot at stake or a little. More than one NFC East title came down to the last day of the regular season against Dallas during the Andy Reid regime. If this is one more part of that era that returns to Philadelphia this season, it will be a game worth waiting for, and both Cowboys and Eagles fans will be in for seasons to be excited about.

The schedule may be daunting, but Fletcher Cox isn’t easily intimidated. GETTY IMAGES

As Phillies break out, so does unsung slugger, catcher Rupp Cameron Rupp stood out front of his locker discussing his team’s recent surge. The Phillies have turned a corner, for now, winning three straight series for the first time since May 6-18. That in itself is an accomplishment, but it’s the way that they’re winning that’s making this run stick out. The offense has finally been hitting. “We had a huge slump as a team and that’s part of the game,” Rupp said. “We battled out of it and we have a lot of young hitters that are learning how to hit in the big leagues. We’re not missing pitches.” The catcher was speaking about the entire team, but that statement could very well summarize what’s been going on with Rupp. He has been a catalyst for this offense as of late. Rupp has batted .400

Rupp has played more, and better, than many expected this season. GETTY IMAGES

on the homestand with three RBIs and has reached base safely in 44 of the 53 games he’s played. He also leads the team in doubles with 17, which marks a career high. Among qualified catchers with at least 175 at bats, Rupp is tied for second in doubles and ranks fourth in OPS (.821). He’s also fifth in batting average.

“Just coming out to play every day, no matter what,” Rupp said. “If the name is on the lineup card or not, I’m coming to the field prepared to play. When my name is on the lineup card, I’m ready to go.” Aside from Carlos Ruiz getting a start or two a week, Rupp has been the guy behind the plate for

the first time in his career. Perhaps that’s why his career season isn’t a surprise. “I’m playing well,” Rupp said. “Whatever that means. I’m happy with my performance. I’m showing what I can do and hopefully I can show I belong here.” Where Rupp stands in the organization is up for interpretation. The Phillies have some talent at the backstop with names like Jorge Alfaro and Jason Knapp hitting their way through the minor leagues. Right now, though, Rupp is doing all he can to stay. He’s upped his average to .283 after dipping to a season-low .238 in the middle of May. Much of that success has to do with the way he’s approaching each bat, particularly when falling behind the count. His three-run home run on Sunday against Kansas City came with two strikes. Wide-open, fast Makefield Highlands among area’s best Any list of the best public golf courses in the Philadelphia area is incomplete without Makefield Highlands. The Yardley track is long, open and fast. For many golfers that means it’s a course you can attack. For many more it’s an exercise in humility. “We tip out at about 7,200 yards,” Makefield’s assistant golf professional Vincent Piazza said. “It’s a good challenge. It’s a typical links course, wide open and what you see is what you get: rolling hills, big fairways, big greens but undulating , well-protected by bunkers. Trouble is on the golf course .” If you know your game enough to know you won’t be keeping it on the fairway, wearing knee-high socks might be a good idea. We aren’t kidding. Most holes have strategically placed heather — tall, weedy grass that acts as a brutal hazard. The course also has a bevy of bunkers that will cost you a shot. “You can grip it and rip it but you better be sure you find the fairways and greens,” Piazza said.

If you’re off the fairway it’s pretty much a one-stroke penalty. GETTY IMAGES

The course has a nice mix of extremely long holes (like the 600-yard seventh hole) and the drivable par-4 13th. Piazza says the course, which routinely is toward the top of public golf course rankings, has two signature holes . “Hole 7 is the long par 5 up the hill with water on the right, guarded by bunkers and heather,” Piazza said, and 15 is a dogleg left par 4, with a water hazard on the approach and heather to the right. They are two demanding holes right there.” Club selection can be tricky too. As a links course it’s open, to be

sure, but landing and keeping the ball where you intend for it to go is a tough task. Taking less club is often the answer. “We don’t mind if the fairways get firm,” Piazza said. “The course is firm and fast for sure.” EVAN MACY

The University of Pennsylvania is seeking children (ages 7 to 9) and their mother to participate in a nutrition research study. Children will be asked to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner in our Center once a week for two weeks. Each visit will last from 8:00AM until 5:30PM.
