BRITAIN’S NEW PRIME MINISTER WILL BE THERESA MAY
1
Interior minister Theresa May will become Britain’s prime minister, with the task of steering its withdrawal from the European Union, after rival Andrea Leadsom abruptly terminated her shortlived and disastrous leadership campaign. May, 59, will succeed David Cameron, who announced he was stepping down after Britons unexpectedly voted last month to quit the EU. Britain’s planned withdrawal has weakened the 28-nation bloc, created huge uncertainty over trade and investment and shaken financial markets. May and Leadsom had been due to contest a ballot of grassroots Conservative party members, with the result to be declared by Sept. 9. But Leadsom unexpectedly quit on Monday. REUTERS
EXPERTS WARN OF MORE SUPERBUG CASES IN COMING MONTHS
2
After two confirmed U.S. cases of a superbug that thwarts a lastresort antibiotic, infectious disease experts say they expect more cases in coming months because the bacterial gene behind it is likely far more widespread than previously believed. Army scientists in May reported finding E. coli bacteria that harbor a gene which renders the antibiotic colistin useless. The gene, called mcr-1, was found in a urine sample of a Pennsylvania woman being treated for a urinary tract infection. On Monday, researchers confirmed preliminary findings that E. coli carrying the same mcr-1 gene were found in a stored bacterial sample of a New York patient who had been treated for an infection last year, as well as in patient samples from nine other countries. POKEMON ADDS $7.5M TO NINTENDO MARKET VALUE IN TWO DAYS

Shares in Japan’s Nintendo soared again on Monday, bringing market-value gains to $7.5 billion in just two days as investors cheered the runaway success of Pokemon GO, its first long-awaited venture in mobile gaming. The game, which marries a classic 20-year old franchise with augmented reality, allows players to walk around real-life neighborhoods while seeking virtual Pokemon game characters on their smartphone screens — a scavenger hunt that has earned enthusiastic early reviews. In the United States, by July 8 — two days after its release — it was installed on more than 5 percent of Android devices in the country, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb. It is now on more Android phones than dating app Tinder and its rate of daily active users was neck and neck with social network Twitter. REUTERS
Black Lives Matter: A movement that defies definition The slogan was started by three women upset over the death of Trayvon Martin and has ballooned into a national movement.
“Black Lives Matter” has become a mantra for people protesting police violence against AfricanAmericans. It’s a hash tag, a popular T-shirt slogan and a movement that is loosely organized — by design. Black Lives Matter was founded by three women who popularized the slogan during protests over the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, an AfricanAmerican teen who was shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. It has a website (BlackLivesMatter.com) and a network of chapters. But the idea is bigger than the organization. Although the march where five Dallas police officers were fatally shot Thursday was organized by another group, news reports described it as a Black Lives Matter event. “The convenient narrative has been for people, for the media to say, ‘Well, this was organized by Black Lives Matter,’” said Tezlyn Figaro, a publicist for Next Generation Action Network, the group that organized the event. The rally “had no affiliation with Black Lives Matter.” The confusion flows in part from the decentralized structure of the Black Lives Matter organization and its founders’ desire that it remain open and inclusive. “Not everyone who shows up at a demonstration is a full-fledged member of BLM, [but] they’re welcomed and encouraged to participate,” Melina Abdullah, a rep-

Woman in ‘iconic’ photo from Brooklyn A powerful image has emerged in the wake of protests around the country calling for an end to police violence against black communities. It’s been hailed as “legendary” and “iconic” for poignantly capturing the spirit of the movement. Its subject, Ieshia Evans, 28, was arrested shortly after the photo was taken by Reuters’ Jonathan Bachman on Saturday at a Baton Rouge protest over the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling by police. Evans, a mother and nurse from Brooklyn who lives in Pennsylvania, stared down a line of heavily armed police as two armored officers rushed forward to handcuff her. After being released from jail, Evans spoke out. “I just need you people to know,” she said in a Facebook post. “I appreciate the well wishes and love, but this is the work of God. I am a vessel! Glory to the most high!” In an interview with The Atlantic published Sunday, Bachman said the moment “happened quickly.” “I had my attention on people confronting the police
on the side of the road … I had turned to look over my right shoulder, I think that I had heard this woman say something about she was going to be arrested, and I saw this woman, and she was standing in the first lane in that road,” the photographer said. “It happened quickly, but I could tell that she wasn’t going to move, and it seemed like she was making her stand. To me it seemed like: You’re going to have to come and get me. And I just thought it seemed like this was a good place to get in position and make an image, just because she was there in her dress and you have two police officers in full riot gear. “It wasn’t very violent. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t resist, and the police didn’t drag her off. “It’s representative of the peaceful demonstrations that have been going on down here. I understand that officers have been hurt in other cities, but down here it’s remained peaceful.” Now, Bachman’s photo of Evans is being compared to other iconic imagery of protestation, like the Tiananmen Square “Tank Man,” a photo of an unidentified man who stood in front of a column of Chinese military tanks in 1989.

resentative of the group’s Los Angeles chapter, said in a conversation with Reuters in June. During the standoff with police negotiators Thursday, the shooter invoked the slogan, saying he was “upset about black lives matter,” according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown. The organization disavowed the violence in a post on its web page. “There are some who would use these events to stifle a movement for change and quicken the demise of a vibrant discourse on the human rights of Black Americans. We should reject all of this. Black activists have raised the call for an end to violence, not an escalation of it.” That didn’t stop a wave of social media criticism attempting to tie the violence to the movement. But Attorney General Loretta Lynch, speaking about the demonstrations inspired by Black Lives Matter and other groups, drew a bright line between the gunman’s actions and “lawful protest and protected speech.” “Do not be discouraged by those who use your lawful actions as cover for their heinous violence,” Lynch said Friday. When it comes to supporting Trump, one man is finding it especially hard to be red in such a blue borough. Gowanus resident Joshua Ramos told the Brooklyn Paper that someone threw a rock through the glass door of his home and ripped up one of his three signs endorsing the presidential candidate. “I was angry, that’s for sure,” he said to the publication. “It’s not fair, you can’t put anything up for Trump.” The incident happened on the night of June 24, according to the Brooklyn Paper, and cost $2,400 to repair the door. Cop in road rage shooting placed on modified duty The NYPD officer who fatally shot Delrawn Small during a July Fourth road rage incident has now been stripped of his badge and gun as authorities investigate the shooting. The news that Officer Wayne Isaacs has been placed on modified duty comes days after a new video was released that showed the shooting as it took place near the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Bradford
Street in East New York, the New York Post reported. Isaacs will work a desk job as police and the state attorney general examine evidence, including the newest video of the incident, the New York Daily News stated. That video contradicts an earlier claim Isaacs made about what happened before he shot Small. Police had claimed Small repeatedly

He told the Brooklyn Paper that he reported the incident to police. They are investigating, but haven’t named a suspect. Ramos tried to persuade the cops, without luck, to look into the vandalism as a hate crime. “You know there’s lots of liberal people around here — they got drunk and did what they had to do,” he told the Brooklyn Paper. “I’ve got my [U.S.] flag up — I’m surprised they didn’t tear it down or burn it.”

Police sources told the Post that Isaacs will most likely face criminal charges in connection to the shooting. Isaacs has been with the NYPD for three years and was assigned to the 79th Precinct in BedStuy, Brooklyn, the Daily News added. JASON NUCKOLLS

A woman apparently jumped from an elevated subway station onto the Grand Central Parkway, where she was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene. Around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, a woman jumped from the Astoria Boulevard elevated train station at 31st Street above the Grand Central Parkway, police reported.
Once she landed on the parkway below, she was struck by an unidentified vehicle that was traveling eastbound, according to police, who added that the car did not stop after hitting her. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, where authorities were continuing to investigate the incident. JASON NUCKOLLS
Ramos isn’t the first Trump supporter to report vandalism during this contentious campaign. A Clearwater, Florida, resident who had painted an “Elect Trump 2016” sign on the side of his house said someone spray-painted his home and set his lawn on fire — because of his support for the Republican, according to Fox 13. In New York City, even the name Trump has sparked vandalism. The New York Post reported that a Donald J. Trump adopt-a-highway sign on the southbound Henry Hudson Parkway was altered with the words “micro penis.”
BRIEF Man killed by SUV after stealing beer from Bronx bodega One man was killed when he was hit by an SUV as he ran across Bruckner Boulevard after allegedly taking beer from a nearby bodega. Around 12:20 a.m. on Monday, a man was struck by an SUV in Mott Haven near the corner of East 149th Street and Bruckner Boulevard, causing fatal injuries, police reported. The SUV, a 2016 BMW X5, was traveling westbound on Bruckner Boulevard’s inner roadway when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing the road from north to south outside the designated crosswalk, authorities added. Police told the New York Daily News that the man had allegedly stolen beer from a nearby bodega before the collision. The SUV remained at the scene as the investigation into the incident was ongoing. Authorities have released a monthly briefing for June showing that overall crime remained low, but certain categories of crime and areas of the city continued to experience an increase in violence. Compared to 2015’s year-to-date, there have been 11 fewer murders and 110 fewer shootings in 2016, authorities reported. “The numbers we’re presenting today are phenomenal: In the first six months of this year, shootings are down 20 percent while gun arrests are up 20 percent,” Mayor Bill de Blasio stated. ties added. There were 121 fewer crimes in June of this year than in June 2015. Despite the encouraging numbers, not all the statistics showed decreased violence as year-to-date slashings and stabbings were up 9 percent, the New York Daily News reported. The Bronx reported the majority of those crimes with 86 percent of knife crimes happening there. “Our highly focused investigations have led to the arrest of nearly 500 violent gang members since January,” Police Commissioner William J.
Bratton stated. “Additionally, it is my expectation that this level of precision policing, coupled with further advancements in technology, will catapult New York City to even lower levels of crime.” While the Transit Bureau reported a 3.6 percent decrease in crime for the month of June, the Housing Bureau reported a 1.3 percent increase, authorities stated. “Every day, the women and men of the NYPD work to protect our city’s communities — and today, it’s clear New Yorkers are safer than ever,” de Blasio added.

BRIEF South African twins planned attacks on US Embassy, Jewish buildings South African twins arrested over the weekend were planning attacks on the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Pretoria, as well as on buildings owned by Jewish people, police said on Monday. Four South Africans, including the twins, Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie, faced charges in court ranging from conspiracy
to firearms offences, the spokesman for the elite police unit Hawks, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said. The four, arrested in Johannesburg on Sunday, will be detained in custody until July 19, when their case will be heard, Mulaudzi said. Quoting the charge sheet, the News24 news organization said the twins had been attempting to fly to Syria. Security officials say there are no known
militant groups operating in South Africa, but Britain and the United States warned in June of a high threat of attacks against foreigners in the country’s shopping malls. Mulaudzi named the other two siblings as Fatima and Ibrahim Mohammed Patel. “The indictment does talk to issues of terror plots that they were planning against the U.S. Embassy as well as Jewish Buildings in the country,” he said,
referring to the twins. “The twins have been charged with conspiracy,” Mulaudzi added. “The Patel siblings have been charged with the violation of the Firearms Control Act for now.” The twins’ preliminary charge sheet states that their conspiracy occurred between October 2015 and July 8 this year, local newspaper the Times said on its online service.
After nuclear deal, Iran sticks to wary tactics in key Gulf waterway

An Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboat GETTY IMAGES
Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday dispatched five military vessels to monitor a U.S. warship hosting one of America’s top generals on a day trip through the Strait of Hormuz, coming as close as 500 yards. For Army General Joseph Votel, who oversees all American military forces in the Middle East, the approaches were a safe though worrying reminder of how little time American forces have to decide whether IRGC ships might pose a threat. The five Iranian vessels consisted of four speedboats, three with mounted machine guns, as well as a guided missile patrol ship. “As you’ve seen in a relatively compressed space here, there is great opportunity for miscalculations,” Votel, head of the U.S. military’s Central Command, told reporters on the bridge of the USS New Orleans, an amphibious dock ship with about 650 Marines aboard. It was also the latest sign that the IRGC appears to be sticking to a familiar posture in the Gulf that predates last year’s nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers including the United States. One of the four speedboats that approached the New Orleans and its escort, a Navy guided missile destroyer, the USS Stout,
cut its engines and watched as the U.S. warships passed. An hour before, a larger Iranian guided-missile patrol craft came by. U.S. officials stressed that such approaches fell within the category of professional interactions, the kind they see during 90 percent of the U.S. Navy’s roughly 250 transits through the Strait of Hormuz each year. But the Navy says some 10 percent are classified as unsafe, abnormal or unprofessional. “We don’t always have a lot of time to deal with those interactions. I think what we’ve probably learned here today is that it’s measured in minutes,” Votel said. For its part, Iran sees the Gulf as its backyard and believes it has a legitimate interest in expanding its influence there. It has long argued that the region should organize its own security collectively, without outside powers. Accordingly Iran uses its sea power in the Gulf to show it will not be cowed by Washington’s naval presence, analysts say. But in 2008 and 2010, in moves that prompted critics to accuse Iran of destabilizing the region, the Islamic Republic threatened to disrupt oil shipping in the Gulf by shutting the Strait of Hormuz if there were any attack on its nuclear sites. BRIEF Court: Arizona police can search based on pot smell, despite legal uses Police in Arizona may legally search an individual’s home or vehicle based solely on the smell of marijuana, even though the drug is legal for medical use, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday. In two unanimous opinions, the state’s highest court said the smell of marijuana can be used as probable cause to
obtain a search warrant despite the fact that Arizona allows its use for medical purposes. “The odor of marijuana in most circumstances will warrant a reasonable person believing there is a fair probability that contraband or evidence of a crime is present,” wrote Chief Justice Scott Bales on Monday. The court rejected claims that a 2010 law legalizing the medical use of marijuana in
the state means the smell test could no longer be used. The ruling came amid liberalizing attitudes toward marijuana among many in the country. Arizona is one of several states, including California and Nevada, where advocates are pushing ballot initiatives to legalize the drug for use by adults. A spokeswoman for the state attorney general’s Office could not immediately be
reached for comment. Mason Tvert, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, said the ruling leaves intact the medical marijuana law in Arizona, one of 25 states along with the District of Columbia that allows such usage. “It can present a burden for some patients but it is not going to affect those qualified patients from losing any of their rights,” Tvert said. Boxing gloves worn by Muhammad Ali during his March 8, 1971, “Fight of the Century” in Madison Square Garden against Joe Frazier HANDOUT
Ali’s gloves, Frazier’s jockstrap from famed 1971 fight go on sale The jockstrap — expected to sell for $10,000 — already met its minimum bid of $5,000 by mid-morning, said Ken Goldin, owner of Goldin Auctions of Runnemede, New Jersey. A jockstrap worn by boxer Joe Frazier when he defeated Muhammad Ali for the combined heavyweight title hit the auction block on Monday, along with the gloves Ali wore in that 1971 bout dubbed the “Fight of the Century.” No bids had yet been received for the gloves, which are expected to sell for more than $1 million, Goldin said. The auction concludes with live bidding on Aug. 4. “People used to make jokes about auctioning off jockstraps as an example of something outrageous,” Goldin told Reuters. “Here we got one
consigned for sale.” The memorabilia went on sale just over a month after Ali’s death at an Arizona hospital at age 74. Frazier died in 2011. Both fighters were undefeated when they met up in the match on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Frazier defeated Ali in a unanimous, 15-round decision. After the fight, Frazier gave the jockstrap to corner-man David Wolf, according to Goldin. Wolf, who was in the Frazier corner for all three of his fights with Ali, later became a manager for Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and other boxers. The jockstrap was found in Wolf’s apartment in New York after his death in 2009. Minimum bids were set at $5,000 for the jockstrap and $250,000 for the gloves. “Similar [Ali] gloves have sold in the millions,” Goldin said. “And that was before he died.”

Dallas protesters embrace the force that took bullets for them The city struggles to cope with the aftershocks of the deadliest day for law enforcement in America since the Sept. 11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks.
Dallas police detective Frederick Frazier strained to lift the dead weight of a fallen fellow officer from a hospital gurney and put him into a body bag. He pulled the zipper closed. Frazier stared down, thinking — this man does exactly what I do; has a family just like mine. He’s not going home. Frederick was among about 100 officers who had seen all five fatally shot Dallas policemen
arrive at the emergency room of Parkland Memorial Hospital near the Oak Lawn section of the city early on Friday morning. Seven others, and two civilians, were wounded. They had all been shot on Thursday night by one brutally proficient shooter who police and protesters initially believed was a small army carrying out a choreographed assault. The shooter, in later conversations with police during a standoff, suggested he was avenging a spate of police shootings of black men. A Blue Lives Matter movement has emerged in Dallas. It has been embraced by protesters who witnessed the slaughter of officers who had walked with them, taken selfies with them

as they protested shootings by police nationwide. The attack on police complicates the already angst-ridden debate over officer-involved shootings. But many citizens, officers and officials of all political stripes here have so far responded by embracing one another, raising hopes for a softening of hardened positions and often vicious rhetoric. “We are a polarized people, said the Rev. Michael W. Waters from the pulpit on Sunday at Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Cedar Crest neighborhood, south of downtown Dallas. Dallas now finds itself at the center of a tense national debate about whether police are the problem or solution, victimizers or victims.
The city would seem to be an unlikely target for retaliation against police shootings, given that its officers have not shot a single suspect — of any race — so far this year, compared with 23 such incidents in the whole of 2012. The decrease follows an intensive effort to train officers in the appropriate use of force. Violent crime in Dallas has been slashed by nearly half between 2003 and last year, when there were 9,038 violent crime incidents, according to Dallas Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation records. Still, the department — along with the city of Dallas and much of Texas — struggles to overcome a history of racial strife. Relatives of Palestinian militant attack victims sue Facebook for $1B
A group of Israelis and Americans filed a lawsuit on Monday seeking $1 billion in damages from Facebook Inc. for allegedly facilitating deadly Palestinian militant attacks on their loved ones. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argued that Facebook “knowingly provided material support and resources to Hamas … facilitat[ing] this terrorist group’s ability to communicate, recruit members, plan and carry out attacks, and strike fear in its enemies.” The social media giant did not respond directly to the lawsuit but said it stood by its regulations for preventing abusive con-

tent and a company representative in Israel said the company wanted “people to feel safe” when using Facebook. “There is no place for content encouraging violence, direct threats, terrorism or hate speech on Facebook. We have a set of Community Standards … and we urge people to use our reporting tools if they find content that they believe violates our standards so we can investigate and take swift action.” The private lawsuit follows censure from Israel’s security minister over what he deemed Facebook’s reluctance to help track potential Palestinian militants and curb incitement to violence. Hamas formally claimed responsibility for one of the attacks cited in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs’ Israeli lawyer, Nitsana Dar-
shan-Leitner, said they had expert assessments linking Hamas to the other attacks. Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the United States. The lawsuit was brought under the 1992 Anti-Terrorism Act that prohibits American businesses from providing any material support, including services, to designated terrorist groups and their leaders. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, called the lawsuit an Israeli attempt to blackmail Facebook and accused Israel of trying to turn the social network into a spy tool against Palestinians. He said some Israeli politicians and soldiers had “expressed pride at the killing of Palestinians” on Facebook and other social media. “The real test for the owners of Facebook is to reject this [Israeli] pressure,” Abu Zuhri said. Darshan-Leitner, of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, filed a class action suit in October for an injunction against Facebook to stop carrying alleged Palestinian incitement. She said proceedings were still under way in that case. REUTERS

After Dallas shooting, US police forces rethinking tactics Police departments across the United States are searching for new tactics for a more difficult era of racial tension, increasingly lethal mass shootings and global terrorism. After last week’s killing of five officers in Dallas, nearly half of America’s 30 biggest cities have issued directives to pair up police officers on calls to boost safety, according to a Reuters survey of police departments. And one, Indianapolis, said it would consider the use of robots to deliberately deliver lethal force, an unprecedented tactic until Thursday when the Dallas police department used a military-grade robot to deliver and

Kim Kardashian made a ton of money on mobile, and it’s all your fault Kim Kardashian graced the cover of Forbes’ new mobile moguls issue this month thanks to her social-media apps. The celebutante’s stupidly addictive RPG game, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, has raked in $160 million since its June 2014 inception, and Kim personally pocketed a cool $45 million of that. According to the pub, 40 percent of Kardashian’s $51 million in 2015 earnings came from the game. Her other app, Kimoji — the one from which you can download custom “sticker” emojis that have been Kardashian-fied for $1.99 a pop — will presumably increase these numbers come time for 2016’s list. Quartz says Kimoji will probably make $2.8 million this year.

Viggo Mortensen stays youthful through acting The Oscar-nominee gets dirty as an extreme hippie dad in “Captain Fantastic. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Much has been made about Viggo Mortensen’s career post-“Lord of the Rings. After Aragorn, the actor had the chance for the biggest roles in the biggest films. He turned most of them down. Instead he’s worked with some of his favorite filmmakers (David Cronenberg, thrice) and hopped around the world. “Captain Fantastic finds Mortensen back in America, but playing an even more quixotic character: Ben Cash, a loner who has raised his six kids in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. After his wife’s death, he struggles with the notion that his very free and open way of parenting may be as rigid as the strict social systems from which he’d escaped.
It’s useful to see a ďŹ lm that doesn’t portray what Ben does as negative — or as wholly positive. What’s interesting is at the beginning of the film, you might think, “Oh, I see what this is. This is going to be some well-made movie with an ideological slant. It’s going to be about some liberal, left-wing, utopian fantasy. They’re going to be our heroes and they’re going to be up against their conservative foes and obstacles.â€? That’s one way to make a movie, and that could be good. But this isn’t that limited. As you get into the story you realize it’s not all perfect. Not everything is condoned, and not everything is condemned either. It’s very layered. We tend to prefer things be black and white. The movie, without trying to be ideological, really puts its finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the country at this time. It speaks to the lack of communication, the

polarization of society. We’re in a moment right now in the U.S. when people are not talking to each other. They’re in these little camps based on religion, based on race, based on political ideology, based on socioeconomic class. I think this movie speaks to that — to the value of communicating and trying to find a new balance.
Being an actor is not entirely unlike living like this. You’ve spent your adult years traveling the globe, trying new things. The job of an actor, the way I see it, is to find the best possible way to see the world from points of view different from your own — sometimes radically different. That’s the fun of it and that’s the job of it. It keeps you
relatively childlike or youthful, because you’re constantly forcing yourself to look at things a different way. As you get older you tend to not do that. My jobs is to remain flexible mentally as much as physically.

Jemaine Clement walks with the giants Dahl’s books are very dark, in their own silly way. Sometimes parents today are reluctant to let their kids read books filled with things like human-eating giants. I think it depends on what’s going on in the world at the time. If they’re not feeling very safe, to read something dark might make them feel depressed. But if you look at those old Brothers Grimm fairy tales, children were dying in them all the time. It’s so scary. But that’s what makes it exciting for a kid. They can feel the adrenaline just by hearing a story.
The actor talks about the movie version of “The BFG” and reading the Roald Dahl book as a kid. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Jemaine Clement just reunited The Flight of the Conchords with Bret McKenzie. They’re playing new shows for the first time in three years. But both have been busy. McKenzie won an Oscar for the song “Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets.” And Clement worked with Steven Spielberg. In “The BFG,” a partly computer animated take on Roald Dahl’s grim children’s classic, he plays a belligerent giant who likes to eat children and bullies our hero: a slightly smaller colossus played by Mark Rylance. That forced Clement to create his performance via hightech motion-capture.
Thanks to motion-capture technology, Jemaine Clement plays one of the brutish giants who terrorize our hero (played by Mark Rylance) in Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG.” STORYTELLER DISTRIBUTUION CO., LLC
Roald Dahl has long been a childhood favorite. Did you read him growing up in New Zealand? Yeah. I particularly remembered “The BFG,” because my teacher at primary school was really excited about that coming out. We read it the day after it was released. It was a big event in my classroom. We liked that
Wellington [New Zealand, where Clement’s from] was mentioned in the book. When the giants take children from there, they say they often taste like boots. [Ed. Wellington is shaped like a boot.] That made a huge impression. To have New Zealand mentioned at all was amazing. That part didn’t make the movie,
even though we tried mentioning it. I wish it had gotten in, but it didn’t fit.
GETTY IMAGES
Tell me about doing motion-capture, where the performance isn’t recorded by a camera
but by gadgets all over your body. It’s strange at first, but you get used to it. It’s more like being in a play than a movie. You don’t have to think about hitting your marks, for instance. It’s hard to get used to acting on camera when you start out. You have to always be in the right place so the camera shot is well-composed. Here, you could move how you felt, because the camera shot was composed after you’ve captured the footage. It feels very natural. Can you tell me about working with people as esteemed as Spielberg and Mark Rylance? Even now, especially now, I can’t believe I was working with those two people. I was really nervous to be working with Steven. But he makes you feel really at ease immediately. He’s a very kind person, very warm and open. He’s like a kind dad.

Steps to a stronger core
Want a flat tummy for summer vacation? Listen up: Ngo Okafor shares his tips. DMITRY BELYAEV Metro World News letters@metro.us
Although Ngo Okafor has two Golden Glove titles, a string of television gigs and a lucrative modeling career — even posing alongside Gisele Bundchen — his true passion lies in getting people motivated at the gym. “My fitness career started because I wanted to do something with a little bit more substance. In modeling you don’t really do anything,” he says with a laugh. “After I started training a couple people, I learned that I also love teaching.” Those wanting washboard abs like Okafor’s
are in luck. When the renowned trainer isn’t having one-on-one training sessions with clients at NYC’s Clay health club, where he’s a partner, he’s teaching RAKA, a workout he created that blends boxing, strength training and cardio. RAKA, reflects the rising trend of boxing. Why is it such a great workout? Boxing uses every muscle and you lose body weight, so you don’t have to worry about getting bulky. IAlso, you get to relieve a lot of stress. You’re throwing punches, you feel powerful. All the while you’re burning calories and building muscle. How do people benefit from working out the core? work, and what happens when you sit is your core shuts down. They say sitting is the new smoking. I’ve had clients who came in back pain, so we focused on their core and it went away. If you’re going on vacation, you’ve gotta do the abs. You get functionality, and looks. It’s a win-win. Follow Ngo (@catchngo) for more fitspo and workouts.
Okafor’s five steps to a stronger core First, work the belly by doing planks. You can do a full plank, on your elbows straight back to your toes. If the person can’t do that, they can do it on their knees. Second, you want to build your obliques, which are the muscles on the sides of your abs. You can do that with twisting exercises or side planks. Third, you want to build muscle in the upper abs with situps and with crunches. Focus on

generating tension in your abs, not swinging your body back and forth. Fourth, it’s important to
work your lower abs with flutter kicks or leg raises. Finally, it’s endurance. You can get that by doing either ab walk-outs (you stand up, then put your palms on the ground and you walk your hands out into a straight-arm plank position, then you walk your hands back toward your legs), or you can do mountain climbers (get in the straight-arm plank position and drive your knee to your elbow, alternating sides).

Eating pasta can help you lose weight Good news for pasta lovers: An Italian study has found that pasta can aid weight loss. Scientists at the Neuromed Institute in Pozzilli, Italy, discovered that pasta is not fattening and can reduce the likelihood of obesity. The study of 23,000 people, published in the Nutrition & Diabetes Journal, said that pasta consumption is associated with better weight management because it forms a part of the much-lauded Mediterranean diet. “Results have shown that pasta is associated with a lower body mass index, a lower prevalence of obesity and a lower waist and hip circumference, when it is eaten according to an individual’s caloric needs and in the context of a Mediterranean diet,” Licia Iacoviello, head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Nutritional Epidemiology at

the Neuromed Institute, said. Investigators tend to believe that those eating less pasta actually substitute it with less healthy foods. They hope people will abandon the concept of “low

Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

Brooklyn’s Neal will make history in Rio Lia Neal will be one of the first African-American swimmers to compete for Team USA. JASON DEVANEY @Jason_Devaney1 sports@metro.us
American swimmer Lia Neal secured her second Olympic berth thanks to a personal best performance. Her appearance in Rio de Janeiro will be a historic one. The 21-year-old, who hails from Brooklyn, made the U.S. squad along with fellow Stanford University swimmer Simone Manuel. Their presence in Rio will be the first time two African-American swimmers have competed at the Olympics for Team USA. Four years ago in London, Neal swam the third leg of the 4x100meter freestyle to help the Americans earn the bronze medal. She was selected to swim in the final after a strong swim in the preliminary heats. At the recent Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Neal punched her ticket to another Olympics by finishing fourth in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 53.77 seconds — a personal best. In most events at the trials, the top two finishers advance to the Olympics. But in the 100m

freestyle, the top six finishers can be named to the squad because of the relays. “I’m a two-time Olympian and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, coaches and friends. I am thankful beyond words, Neal wrote on her Twitter account. She pinned the July 3 tweet so that it appears at the top of her feed.

Neal began swimming at age 6 after her friends had begun taking lessons. Fifteen years later, Neal has morphed into a relay swimmer with an impressive resume. Aside from her London Olympics bronze medal, Neal has silver medal from the 2015 world championships in the 4x100-meter mixedmedley relay, a bronze from the same meet in
the 4x100-meter freestyle, and two medals from the 2012 short course worlds: gold in the 4x100-meter freestyle and bronze in the 4x100meter medley. Neal also won the gold medal as part of the 4x100-meter freestyle at the 2015 World University Games. With a rÊsumÊ like that, it’s no wonder Neal finds herself on another
Olympic team, with a relay medal square in her sights. “I think it’s great for the sport of swimming to become more diverse and also for kids to become water safe, Neal told a Stanford-area television station during a recent interview, a few days before the U.S. swim team departed for preOlympics training camps in Texas and Puerto Rico.
Neal has come a long way since swimming her first laps as a child and her days of swimming at Manhattan’s Asphalt Green. And she made history in 2012 when she was the first black swimmer to compete on a U.S. relay team at the Olympics. She’s hoping to add another piece of hardware next month in Brazil.

No. 4
Giants (57-33) The Giants go into the break as one of the hottest teams in baseball as they have won four straight and
eight of 10 to open a 6.5 game lead in the NL West. Johnny Cueto has the most wins in the NL with 13 and Madison Bumgarner has the second-best ERA at 1.94.
Cubs (53-35)
Orioles (51-36)
Blue Jays (51-40)
Texas is struggling, but still leads the AL West by 5.5 games. It has dropped seven of its last 10. A starting Texas pitcher hasn’t received a win since June 27.
It’s been pretty much a month-long slump for the Cubs as they’ve most recently dropped eight of their last 10. Still, they lead the NL Central by seven.
Though Baltimore had a tough West Coast swing, it is up two games in the AL East. Mark Trumbo’s 28 homers top the AL leaderboard.
Edwin Encarnacion’s 80 RBIs are the most in the majors and are eight more than the secondplace player. The AL East is a tight race.

Indians (52-36)
Dodgers (51-40)
Mets (47-41)
The Nats go into the break feeling good as they have won three straight games and six of their last 10. Daniel Murphy is batting an MLB-best .348.
The good thing for the Indians is that they have a plus-81 run differential. Danny Salazar has a 2.75 ERA, which is second best in the AL.
The Dodgers have won three straight and seven of their last 10. Clayton Kershaw and his 1.79 ERA should be returning soon.
With all the injuries to their rotation it may be time to trade for a starter. The Mets have lost three straight and are tied with the Marlins in the NL East.
