Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this sooner things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis the better the results. The key to trying to avoid knee replacement surgery is doing the correct treatment as soon as possibly

The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the “C-Arm allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing procedures without Precision Arthritis Targeting (P.A.T.T.)can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. If you had viscosupplementation treatments without Presision Arthritis Targeting Technology and did not get good results - this may be why. “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The keys are to not wait, get a good evaluation from an expert and make sure precision arthritis targeting is used to make sure you have the best chance for success.

Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery requiring months of rehabilitation. Some doctors think modern treatments done early enough can keep baby boomers from going under the knife.

What is the “correct treatment? “That depends, said the director. “There is no one answer when it comes to medical conditions. nee arthritis is no different. That’s why, if you have knee pain, you should have it evaluated by a doctor who deals with and treats knee pain every day, added the director. For many knee arthritis pain sufferers the right treatment is Viscosupplementation whereby a preparation of Hyaluronic acid a gel-like FDA approved medicine is applied directly into the knee joint using Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. Hyaluronic acid is the natural lubricant and shock absorber of your joints and is found to be decreased in arthritis sufferers. This is similar to running your without oil. Obviously, the sooner you put oil back in the car - the less damage will be done. That’s why some doctors feel early viscosupplementation gets the best results and is so important for avoiding surgery.

Everyone Wants Proof: In the artist simulated drawings above, picture #1 is a normal, pain-free knee. There is no arthritis and the knee can move and bend freely without pain.

Pain - The red is a knee joint with painful osteoarthritis. With progressive “drying out, arthritis causes the joint space to decrease and an array of symptoms which may include grinding, stiffness, decreased motion, bone spurs, swelling and a lot of pain.

Successful Treatment - Treatment (blue) being applied directly into the knee joint using precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. Advanced imaging allows treatments to be as precise as possible. Viscosupplementation can lubricate the joint and decrease pain.

Failed Treatment - the medicine misses the joint space. Research shows this occurs up to 30% of the time without the use of Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology to guide the injection. This is why prior treatment may not have worked for you.

Knee Pain Screenings Offered To Help Determine If New York Metro Area Residents Qualify For Popular Treatment Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds of knee pain sufferers have ocked to NY Pain MD New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - even-though it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story. Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricating uid (synovial uid) in your Knee joint dries up. This means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating. Like “Joint Oilâ€? Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.â€? It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial uid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial uid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, puriďŹ ed and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and “culturedâ€? into highly effective arthritis pain-ďŹ ghting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain. Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or

no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does. Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. This allows us to place the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time. noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering on ly the best technology. And that’s not all: “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering

After getting treatment and feeling better, many patients have decided to cancel their total knee replacement surgeries. added the director. How To Find Out If It Can Help You If you have knee pain, the NY Pain MD doctors would like to invite you for a no-obligation screening to see if you are a candidate for their treatments using Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. All you have to do is call 800-227-KNEE (5633) right now and when the scheduling specialist answers the phone tell her you would like your no obligation “Knee Pain Screening. The doctors at NY Pain MD can only accept a limited amount of new patients each month for this screening - so if you are interested please call now. Your no obligation screening will only take about 25-30 minutes... you will get all your questions answered and leave knowing if you have possibly found the solution to your knee pain. And here’s something really importantViscosupplementation treatments are covered by most insurance, union plans and even medicare. To schedule your no obligation screening or if you have any questions: call 800227 KNEE

Are You QualiďŹ ed For Knee Arthritis Screening With NYC Pain MD? Do you have pain and osteoarthritis (arthritis) of the knee? Have you tried other treatments such as NSAIDS and other anti-inamatory medications without success? Have you already tried viscosupplementation (HyaIgan, Suparz, Synvisc) without satisfactory results?

Advanced Medical Technology Can Make All The Difference: This advanced Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology using uorososcopic imaging allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so treatments are precise and the FDA approved lubricating medicine actually goes EXACLTY where it is supposed to. Studies show that procedures done without this technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time. This is one reason Viscosupplementation may not have worked for you in the past. NY Pain MD uses this P.A.T. Imaging Technology. with each and every treatment.

If you answered yes to any of these questions - give NY Pain MD a call and schedule your no obligation knee pain screening

TRANSGENDER BATHROOM FIGHT SET TO REACH SUPREME COURT

1

The legal fight over whether transgender people can use public bathrooms that reflect their gender identity is set to reach the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time in a case involving a Virginia high school student who was born a girl but now identifies as male. The Gloucester County School Board has lost its fight in lower courts to prevent Gavin Grimm, 17, from using the boys’ bathroom while litigation continues. The board is expected to file an emergency application with the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking to block a lower court’s injunction requiring it to allow Grimm to use the boys’ bathroom, according to Kyle Duncan, one of the school board’s lawyers. SHOOTING OF THREE IN VIRGINIA CAPTURED BY FACEBOOK LIVE CAMERA

Three Virginia men were wounded by a hail of gunfire in a shooting recorded on Facebook Live video, police said on Wednesday, another example of the phenomenon of violence being streamed online. The men were shot shortly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Norfolk, about 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., police said in a statement. The three, two of them 27 and one 29, were taken to a hospital. One was in critical condition. The live video posted to Facebook showed three men sitting in a car smoking and listening to music. The camera is pointed up to the face of one man sitting in the front passenger seat. Some five minutes into the video, about 30 shots erupt within less than half a minute. The camera drops while still running and records for more than an hour from the car’s floor. REUTERS

AMAZON SAYS PRIME DAY ORDERS JUMP 60 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR

Amazon.com said customers placed 60 percent more orders worldwide in its second “Prime Day” sale despite early glitches, cementing the event’s position as an annual shopping festival for online shoppers. The retailer said it recorded the largest daily sales for Amazon devices on Tuesday, helped by heavy discounts. The Fire TV Stick was its best-selling device. Orders rose by more than 50 percent in the United States, Amazon said. Orders placed on the company’s mobile app doubled. Amazon did not provide total sales figures for the event, which was open only to members of its $99-per-year Prime subscription service.

Two NYPD officials who are accused of accepting lavish gifts in exchange for doing favors for Mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign donors pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. In Manhattan federal court, Deputy Chief Michael Harrington and Deputy Inspector James Grant pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and honest-services fraud, conspiracy to pay and receive bribes and the receipt and payment of bribes, the New York Post reported. In return for allegedly doing favors for de Blasio

donors Jeremy Reichberg and Jona Rechnitz, the two NYPD officials were accused of receiving prostitutes, trips and gifts in return, the New York Daily News reported. Rechnitz, who was identified by sources, was reported to have pleaded guilty and be cooperating with authorities. The two NYPD officials acted as “a private police force for [Reichberg and Rechnitz] and their friends,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was quoted from the indictment by the Post. The officers now face up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the charges, according to the Post. “The alleged conduct violates the basic principle that public servants are to serve the public, not help themselves to cash and benefits just for doing their job,” Bharara was quoted by The Wall Street Journal. Villanueva has been suspended, and Grant and Harrington were put on modified duty after they became involved in the investigation earlier this year, but the twosome later submitted their retirement papers, NBC4 re-

after pleading not guilty to the charges, the Post added. Harrington and Grant were arrested on June 20 along with Sgt. David Villanueva in connection with the corruption accu-

ported. They will receive their retirement benefits. Other officers involved in the investigation included Michael Malici, who has since been fired, and Michael Ameri, who killed himself after being questioned about the corruption allegations, NBC4 added. The expanding corruption investigation into the dealings of New York officials also led to the recent indictment of Correction Union head Norman Seabrook, who faced similar charges in court last Thursday, the Daily News added. “The case shows whether you’re a cop or a chief, if you break the law you will be handled the same way,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton was quoted at a June news conference by The New York Times.

Lottery for affordable housing building in Brooklyn on Friday 535 Carlton will have 298 studio to 3-bedroom apartments for low- and middle-income New Yorkers. JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

A building scheduled to open later this year in Prospect Heights’ Pacific Park development will offer potential residents a shot at a bargain price in an upcoming affordable housing lottery. Greenland Forest City Partners, the developers of 535 Carlton Ave., have announced that a housing lottery set to start on Friday will give low- and moderate-income New Yorkers a chance to live in the building, which is part of the Barclays Center-adjacent development. The 18-story, all-affordable building includes 298 rental apartments ranging from studios to threebedroom units, Greenland Forest City Partners stated, adding that the

building was designed for families as it has 102 units with two bedrooms or more. The below-market rents will adhere to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development guidelines and will be based on area median income (AMI) when the lottery begins, according to the developer. Studios were slated to rent for as low as $548 per month while a threebedroom could be as low

as $817 per month. Located at the corner of Carlton Avenue and Dean Street, the new building is one of seven planned towers currently in development at the 22-acre Pacific Park development, which will ultimately include 2,250 affordable units by

2025, DNAinfo stated. To take part in the lottery, which will be open for 60 days, apply at Housing Connect, the city’s application portal. Because of Brooklyn’s high real estate prices, demand for affordable buildings has been increasing, the developer said. Last month, a similar housing lottery for 461 Dean St., another Pacific Park property, received approximately 84,000 applications for 181 belowmarket residences.

Survey shows how the British think most New Yorkers live A new survey asked what the English think American homes in different regions look like, and what they think of New York real estate revealed an opinion formed more by Hollywood than in reality. A new campaign called “This Just In” from real estate portal Homes .com asked Brits to describe what they thought

were the unique characteristics of residences in different regions of the U.S., and while they were right about certain location-specific traits, much of what they thought of New York was exaggerated by media representation. Repeatedly, survey respondents listed Carrie Bradshaw and the cast of “Friends” as their first thoughts when describing New York City residences, which were pictured with exposed brick work, steel beams and huge windows, Homes.com reported. “As a former New York City resident, I can attest to the major disconnect between apartments as featured in ‘Friends’ and the reality of affordability and space in real life,” Grant Simmons, vice president

of search marketing for Homes.com, stated. When asked to describe the typical New York residence, respondents did get closer to the truth with some of their replies, as terms like “small” and “high rent” appeared frequently, according to Homes.com. Regarding their opinion of the typical American home, phrases like “American flag” and “4x4 parked outside” made regular appearances in the survey results, according to Homes.com, adding that while most Americans do fly the flag at home or at work, the bestselling car, as of 2016, was the midsize Toyota Camry. “While white picket fences are popular in some U.S. suburbs, thanks to Hollywood they

Disrupted subway lines slog back into service by evening commute after massive delays

Subway service was restored by the evening rush hour Wednesday after an electrical problem caused extensive delays during the afternoon. For most commuters, the delays were only temporary, except on the 1, 2,

3, 4, 5 and 6 lines, according to the MTA. Regular service resumed with residual delays on all lines by 5 p.m., in time for the evening commute. The agency’s website blamed the slowdown on electrical issues at the MTA’s subway Rail Control Center. According to ABC7, trains were kept running, but had to be dispatched locally. An MTA spokesman explained to the New York Daily News that when the outage occurred, a backup control center and local

towers were activated, and to keep track of the trains, they had to run at slower speeds. Countdown clocks were also not functioning. Straphangers, already frustrated with MTA service, were upset with the lack of communication about why there were delays, according to the Daily News. “I’ve been here for half an hour and it looks like we’ll have to wait some more,” said Robert Felder, 54. “The service keeps getting worse, but the fare keeps going up.”

THE BATTLE AHEAD After winning power, Theresa May faces Brexit divorce battle Having fought her way to the top of British politics, new Prime Minister Theresa May will face an even tougher battle in power: plotting a divorce from the European Union that she once opposed but now says must not be halted. The fate of the post-World War II project of European integration, and even of the United Kingdom itself, will depend on

May’s rapport with another pastor’s daughter who climbed to the summit of a conservative party: Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. May’s biggest immediate decision will be when to trigger formal exit proceedings. It is a call she will have to make while also facing an economy under extreme strain, deep division in the ruling party and potential demands from nationalists in Scotland for a referendum on

independence. Despite having campaigned to remain in the EU before the June 23 Brexit referendum, May said on winning the Conservative Party leadership there would be no turning back: “Brexit means Brexit and we are going to make a success of it.” The Brexit vote thrust Britain into political crisis with both major parties in leadership battles and investors left guessing about the future relationship

with the EU. She described her job as steering Britain through treacherous economic and political uncertainties, negotiating a proper exit and forging “a new role for ourselves in the world.” As Britain’s second female prime minister, May has prompted comparisons with “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher, who governed from 1979 until 1990 and was no stranger to doing battle in Europe. Theresa May became Britain’s new prime minister on Wednesday, promising to carve out a bold new future in the world as she embarks on the monumental task of leading the country out of the European Union. “We will rise to the challenge. As we leave the European Union we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world, and we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us,” she said. Cameron stepped down after Britons rejected his entreaties and voted to leave the EU in a referendum last month, severely undermining European efforts to forge greater unity and creating economic uncertainty across the 28-nation bloc. May must try to limit the damage to British trade and investment

as she renegotiates the country’s ties with its 27 EU partners. She will also attempt to unite a divided ruling Conservative Party and a fractured nation in which many, on the evidence of the vote, feel angry with the political elite and left behind by the forces of globalization. Acknowledging the struggles faced by many Britons, May declared: “The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives. “When we take the big calls we’ll think not of the powerful but you, when we pass new laws we’ll listen not to the mighty but to you, when it comes to taxes we’ll prioritize not the wealthy but you.” The United States congratulated May and said it was confident in her ability to steer Britain through the Brexit negotiations. “Based on the public comments we’ve seen from the incoming prime minister, she intends to pursue a course that’s consistent with the prescription that President Obama has offered,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. Clinton says Trump is most divisive candidate ‘in our lifetimes’ The two are heading into July nominating conventions where they are to formally become the Democratic and Republican candidates. Democrat Hillary Clinton laced into Republican presidential rival Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of stoking divisions among Americans over race and religion. “His campaign is as divisive as any we have seen in our lifetimes,” Clinton said at a campaign appearance at the Illinois state house in Springfield. “It is built on stoking mistrust and pitting American against American. It’s there in everything he says and everything he promises to do as president.” Clinton’s speech on the divisions she believes Trump is exacerbating came a week after a sniper shot and killed five Dallas police officers during a protest of police killings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota. Clinton’s speech on

Wednesday carried the echo of history. The state house in the Illinois capital of Springfield was the site where President Abraham Lincoln delivered an anti-slavery speech during his campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1858 and where President Barack Obama, the first African-American to hold the highest office in America, launched his campaign. Clinton criticized

Trump’s proposals to ban Muslims from entering the country, create a database of Muslims already in the country and step up deportations by creating a special deportation force. Trump spent months “trying to discredit the citizenship and legitimacy of our first black president,” Clinton said of his statements questioning Obama’s birthplace and religion. REUTERS

BRIEF Pokemon Go blamed for crimes but also aids embattled police The Pokemon Go craze is blamed for several robberies of distracted mobile phone players, but the game’s cartoon characters have also helped U.S. police improve strained community relations and even arrest wanted suspects. The app, created by mobile game developer Niantic for Nintendo, is upending the world of gaming, getting players off

the couch and walking outside to play. Staring at their phone screens, they search for virtual Pokemon characters that appear to pop up at office spaces, restaurants, museums and other places. Players score points in various ways, including capturing the Pokemon characters with a flick of a finger on their phone screen. Less than a week after launching in the United States, where it has drawn more than

7 million gamers to hunt virtual Pokemon, the game is also facing a backlash. Hallowed places including Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C. have urged players to stay away, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has asked to be removed from the game, a museum spokesman said. Across the United States, players have been drawn down dark alleys and into dangerous

neighborhoods in search of the imaginary creatures, only to be targeted by criminals. In College Park, Maryland, university students holding their smartphones out to play Pokemon Go were robbed on Tuesday night by an armed suspect, police said. In Antelope, California, two men playing the game in a park late on Sunday reported being robbed and carjacked by a gunman. REUTERS

Tesla Model X GETTY IMAGES

No more Tesla buyback guarantee as company cuts price of Model X The changes come after Tesla warned earlier this month it will miss its vehicle delivery target for a second consecutive quarter. Tesla Motors Inc. has ended a program that guaranteed the resale value of its cars, and lowered the starting price of its Model X crossover, the high-profile electric vehicle maker said on Wednesday. The discontinuation of the buyback program, as of July 1, allows Tesla to free up cash that had been set aside to buy back Model S cars after three years at a value of at least 50 percent of the base purchase price. It faces other challenges, including a regulatory investigation of its Autopilot technology following a May 7 fatal crash and more scrutiny of its financials after a proposed merger with SolarCity Corp. Within the next 12 months, Tesla has disclosed it could pay a maximum of $192.4 million to cover resale value guarantees on 4,209 vehicles. That amounts to a maximum liability of $45,711 per car, al-

though Tesla could offset payouts by reselling repurchased vehicles. Tesla valued the total liability created by the resale value guarantee at $1.58 billion as of March 31, according to its latest quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, up over 20 percent since the end of 2015. The program, begun in 2013, was intended to help Tesla control its secondary market and reassure buyers purchasing vehicles using its novel technology that resale values wouldn’t drop substantially. A Tesla representative said the program was discontinued to “keep interest rates as low as possible and offer a compelling lease and loan program to customers.” In effect, Tesla is now doing what most established automakers do: allow market forces to set trade-in values. Only a very small number of Model S sedans are sold through used vehicle auctions, and so far the vehicles “seem to be going for a pretty strong premium in the second hand market,” said Patrick Min, an analyst with Automotive Lease Guide. STUCK ELEVATOR?

POLITICOS AND PIKACHUS

STAY SAFE. STAY PUT.

While the rest of America is chasing Jigglypuff and Magicarp, some of us are preparing for a much more depressing version of Pokemon Go. Call it Pokemon Co — as in “convention.” Yes, I will soon join the grumbling herd of journalists trudging off to cover the Republicans in Cleveland and then the Democrats in Philadelphia. And trust me, both of these circuses come with critters you’d rather avoid. The most common is the fierce Partisanisaurus. Known for a onesided attacking style, this creature turns a blind eye to every flaw in its own party, while simultaneously seeing nothing but evil among — well, anyone who does not agree with it. Always bolder in packs, when enough of them get together they have a frightening affection for tacky clothing, ridiculous hats and evolving into full-fledged wingnuts.

RING FOR HELP. RELAX. WAIT. New Yorkers have died trying to escape stalled elevators. The safest place to be is inside the elevator. Don’t try to get out for any reason. Bill de Blasio, Mayor Rick D. Chandler, P.E., Commissioner

Caution: In either form, this creature can be pelted with Pokelogic all day and will never admit being cornered, let alone captured. Another convention congregant: the ZeroSumOne. This political animal knows his/her candidate is a mess — mistrusted by the public and disliked by even some allies. But at least his/her nominee is not “that other one!” Fair enough. After all, why go through all the fuss of finding a really good candidate when you can just demonize the opposition? Bernievees and TrumpDumpers will also be hanging around the bars, growling and snapping. They may prove hard to snare for the nominees, but

don’t worry about them doing any real damage. It’s now pretty clear they have no teeth. The Protestonizers will bear watching, if only because they often harbor MediaMaulers who just love chomping into unsuspecting journalists — especially when the journos foolishly point out not everyone in the country agrees with the Partisanisaurs. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few ItCoulddaBeenMes in the hotel lobbies, whining about how great they would have been as president and why they decided to run for Senate again after all. Dealing with all these characters can be tiring, but when you’re a reporter at a convention, you gotta catch ’em all. Still, if you see me slipping away for some fresh air now and then, please don’t raise a fuss — like Pikachu, I’m hiding.

First funerals held for Dallas police officers slain in ambush At the Dallas megachurch called The Potter’s House, officers by the thousands crowded into the funeral for Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer Brent Thompson, who had married a fellow officer just two weeks before last Thursday’s attack. Thousands of police officers joined by ordinary citizens attended funerals on Wednesday for three of the policemen shot dead in a racially motivated ambush attack last week that intensified America’s long-running debate on race and justice. “I know many of you

have dealt with these things quite often,” pastor Rick Lamb of Northside Baptist Church told the crowd. Funerals were also taking place on Wednesday for Sergeant Michael Smith, 55, and Officer Lorne Ahrens, 48, of the Dallas Police Department. The funerals came a day after President Barack Obama praised the slain officers’ heroism, condemned the attack as an “act not just of demented violence but of racial hatred” and made an impassioned plea for national unity. The five officers were killed by a former U.S. Army Reserve soldier who told police that he was angry about police killings of two black men in Louisiana and Min-

were the latest in a series of high-profile police killings of black men in various U.S. cities that have brought intense scrutiny of police use of force, particularly against black suspects. The police slain in Dallas last week were patrolling a demonstra-

For the first time, a federal judge has suppressed evidence obtained without a warrant by U.S. law enforcement using a stingray, a surveillance device that can trick suspects’ cellphones into revealing their locations. U.S. District Judge William Pauley in Manhattan on Tuesday ruled that defendant Raymond Lambis’ rights were violated when the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration used such a device without a warrant to find his Washington Heights apartment. The DEA had used a stingray to identify Lambis’ apartment as the most likely location of a cellphone identified during a drug-trafficking probe. Pauley said doing so constituted an unreasonable search. “Absent a search warrant, the government may not turn a citizen’s cellphone into a tracking device,” Pauley wrote. The ruling marked the first time a federal judge had suppressed evidence obtained using a stingray, according to the American Civil Lib-

erties Union, which like other privacy advocacy groups has criticized law enforcement’s use of such devices. “This opinion strongly reinforces the strength of our constitutional privacy rights in the digital age,” ACLU attorney Nathan Freed Wessler said in a statement. It was unclear whether prosecutors would seek to appeal. A spokeswoman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, whose office was prosecuting the case, declined to comment. Stingrays, also known as “cell site simulators,” mimic cell phone towers in order

to force cell phones in the area to transmit “pings” back to the devices, enabling law enforcement to track a suspect’s phone and pinpoint its location. Critics of the technology call it invasive and say it has been regularly used in secret to catch suspect in violation of their rights under the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU has counted 66 agencies in 24 states and the District of Columbia that own stingrays but said that figure underrepresents the actual number of devices in use given what it called secrecy surrounding their purchases. Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones got this in “Ghostbusters.” HOPPER STONE

5

THE FUN STARTS HERE

Reasons why you should ignore sexist men about ‘Ghostbusters’

We can’t have nice things, and as usual men are to blame. We’ve spent two miserable years held hostage by a tiny band of stupid, angry boys, who’ve done their damndest to tarnish the good name of the “Ghostbusters” reboot, all because it starred women. Even if the film was a mess (and it isn’t), the all-girl “Ghostbusters” was a capital idea. Here’s why the haters were always wrong: MATT PRIGGE

EVERYONE INVOLVED

THE SECOND ONE ISN’T VERY GOOD

IS TALENTED

When “Ghostbros” talk about the tarnishing of a beloved franchise, perhaps they’re forgetting the series has a 50 percent batting average. Maybe they’ve mentally blocked “Ghostbusters 2,” which came out five years after the first and

Of the main four, two are major movie stars who aren’t typical movie stars. The others are currently the two best people on “Saturday Night Live.” They are all of them very funny, and very funny in very different ways. Kristen Wiig does shy and awkward. Melissa McCarthy is confident yet foolish. Leslie Jones is brash. Kate McKinnon might be insane. (Also Chris Hemsworth, as their pretty secretary, might be a secret comedic genius.) And they’re all being directed by Paul Feig, who — with “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat” and “Spy” — has not only shown he can get the best out of talented people, but has basically been the only director who makes a point of making big movies starring women. Plus he has killer fashion sense and a collection of rare canes.

revealed that the magic was already gone. Everyone, not the least Bill Murray, phones it in. There’s failed catchphrases. There’s a dancing toaster. There’s a flying baby. There’s a villain who’s a painting (although that he’s played by

Norbert Grupe, a notorious real-life sociopath, does make it spooky). And it has the nerve to leave us with the message that New Yorkers should try being nice for a change. To which we say: Up yours and stop manspreading on the subway.

THIRD VERSE ISN’T THE SAME AS THE FIRST

Oh, sure, like the first one, the new “Ghostbusters” features three disgraced scientists and a plebe building a small business from the ground floor, battling bureaucracies and saving the city. But those are

Here’s the original boys. SONY

‘GHOSTBUSTERS’ IS A GREAT IDEA

It’s honestly pretty weird “Ghostbusters” hasn’t been sequelized to death. Ghosts and comics are two great things that, unlike nuts and gum or Donald Trump and elected office, really do go great together. But it’s hard to get the mix right. The original wasn’t the first movie to combine big special effects and big comedy —

there was, for instance, Steven Spielberg’s atypically joyless bloat-a-thon “1941” — but it was the first to find the balance between thrills and yuks. It’s an ideal worth trying to nail again, even if that means bringing in completely different stars and filmmakers. In fact, it might atone for our next item up top on the right …

just rough plot points; it’s a completely different story with its own, very different sense of humor. In an age when a new “Star Wars” is pretty much the original “Star Wars,” this “Ghostbusters” doesn’t just re-feed us

leftovers. And that our heroes are women isn’t the only thing worth celebrating. In the original, only Bill Murray was really allowed to cut it loose. This one has an all-star team where everyone gets to let their freak flag fly.

TO SUPPORT WOMEN AND DISPROVE STUPID SEXIST BROS

Did you know the only other big movie this summer starring only women is “Bad Moms”? We need more variety in our blockbusters, including our blockbusters that exhume old favorites. And of course, if we don’t

turn “Ghostbusters” into a monster hit, that means nervous studio execs, who are always looking for a reason to not make movies about women, won’t make movies about women. Seeing it is a practical, even

a political act. And it will feel good, too, when the tiny militia of MRA freaks who assumed they had the power to torpedo a promising movie are shown to have no power — and probably tiny penises.

Kristen Stewart on how to work with Woody Allen The actress talks “Cafe Society” and the filmmaker’s “blunt” but refreshing way with actors. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Kristen Stewart has two movies out this weekend. One is “Equals,” a sci-fi indie; the other is “Cafe Society,” the new Woody Allen film. She thinks that’s weird. “I just figure you’d have to really, really like me to see two movies in one weekend,” she jokes. We’re talking “Cafe Society,” in which the 26-year-old plays a young woman in 1930s Hollywood who falls for a

young man (Jesse Eisenberg), even though she’s sleeping with his movie mogul uncle (Steve Carell). She chooses the uncle, and the two part ways, only to reconnect much later, when their lives have dramatically changed. Were you someone who watched all of Woody Allen’s movies growing up? I haven’t seen all of his movies — not even in the least. The ones I really like are, obviously, “Annie Hall.” My favorite is “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” I love that movie so much it’s crazy. They can be really dark and honest, but in a way that doesn’t feel depressing. It’s just like, “That’s life!” I think he has a casual approach to his anxieties. People who are so overwhelmed and tripped-

out about anxieties are actually not that anxietyridden. Because the ones that are are like, “I’ve been dealing with this since I was born. I’ve always been thinking these existential, pit-ofthe-stomach thoughts that you can’t get past.” That’s interesting to me. Without being really sad or feeling a lot of pain, you’re never going to be happy. Conversely, if you’re never happy, you’re never going to be in a lot of pain. Woody has a very unusual way with actors. He doesn’t like to talk to them or give them much direction. Some actors love it and some are freaked out by it. How was it for you?

It didn’t take me long to get used to his blunt nature. Most directors are always protecting their precious little actors and their egos. 24 WKND ‘‘Ghostbusters’’

Director: Paul Feig Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig Rating: PG-13

Relax, men’s rights activists: The funniest part of the all-female “Ghostbusters” is a dude. As our heroes’ superdolt himbo of a secretary, Chris Hemsworth doesn’t walk away with the movie. If anything it’s a photo finish with Kate McKinnon, as the quartet’s most unhinged member. But it’s really a comedy where everyone’s funny, not the least the four women helping to rework and regender a beloved franchise. That Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” is fun and funny is, of course, a huge relief. After all the hoopla over the unloved trailer and cries of childhood memories left poop-stained, it would have been crushing had it been bad or painfully mediocre. If we had to see it out of obligation — as a political act, to counter a culture that still asks if women are funny, when women have been funny since at least the Lascaux cave days — it would have been another reminder that 2016 is the worst. Yet it does something else.

We’ve run plenty of pictures of the ladies of “Ghosbusters” in this edition, so here’s Chris Hemsworth as their hot secretary. HOPPER STONE

Mainstream film is stuck in a reboot stutter, sometimes bringing back old entities (e.g., “Star Wars”) too faithfully. “Ghostbusters” regurgitates some of the original’s story beats: A motley crew of disgraced nerds (plus one plebe) creates a makeshift business and beats back a New York apocalypse. But Feig and company do it their way. Their “Ghostbusters” is its own thing, has its own voice and is only mildly slavish to an old commodity. Broken down, it’s 30 percent a new “Ghostbusters” movie, 70 percent a new Paul Feig movie. Being mostly a Paul Feig movie means it combines unusually in-

spired ad-libbing with creatively silly plotting. Even the big world-destroying plot has some edge. The villain isn’t just some mischievous rando; he’s a whiny, entitled manboy (Neil Casey), not unlike the whiny, entitled manboys who’ve besieged upon the film since its inception. And though it fumbles a bit during its FXheavy climax, it knows the real spectacle is not ghosts or yet more buildings being destroyed. It’s Kate McKinnon, eyes ablaze, giving a big, tonguey lick to a laser gun before she takes out some expensive special effects a million times less interesting than she is. MATT PRIGGE

Enter a new ‘Dimension’ Virtual reality is not the future — it’s here, in Times Square. EVA KIS @thisiskis

eva.kis@metro.us

Madame Tussauds, known for creating wax sculptures of famous people for 200 years, may not seem like the place to step into our digital future. But just as it’s given visitors a way to escort J.Lo down the Oscars red carpet, it’s now the place to experience the next level of living the dream: hyper-reality. That’s what immersive entertainment company The Void calls its nextlevel virtual reality experience, “Ghostbusters Dimension,” created in partnership with Sony Pictures and now open at Madame Tussauds New York. You and up to three teammates gear up in proton packs, VR helmets and wireless rifles that

look right out of “Tron” to exorcise an NYC apartment building of spectral menaces ranging from cute and small to very big and angry. “We saw a real early beta of ‘Ghostbusters Dimension,’ and it took a 10th of a second for us to realize, ‘Wow, we’ve gotta do this as quick as possible,’” says Eric Fluet, head of marketing and sales at Madame Tussauds. The museum also created a walk-through experience featuring new “Ghostbusters” sets and, of course, its four leading ladies. “Dimension” further hints at the museum’s evolution into a fully immersive experience: “It truly feels like you’re actually in the movie,” he says. The list of what makes “Dimension” unique is, in one word, endless. We asked James Jensen, co-founder and chief visionary officer at The Void, for a peek behind the curtain.

The realest virtual reality Right now, there are no other virtual reality experiences available to the public. You’re either trying them out at tech conventions or shelling out hundreds of dollars for a VR headset like the Oculus Rift. Even then, there are limitations: Most headsets confine you to a chair or, in the case of HTC’s Vive, a small cube to keep you from walking into walls or worse. In “Dimension,” players can walk anywhere within the rooms, seeing, hearing and interacting with teammates rendered as Ghostbuster avatars — which is entirely new to the virtual reality world. “There is a huge difference between having a solitary experience and sharing it with your friends,” he says. “If you

Scenes from “Ghostbusters Dimension”

went through Ghostbusters by yourself, it would be OK. You’d go, ‘Oh, that’s neat,’ but there’s nobody to share it with.”

The ghosts can see you, too “We define hyper-reality as mapping a virtual, digital world over a physical structure world,” Jensen says. “Dimension” is an intelligent set of four rooms filled with real objects like a chair, sink and elevator grates, and effects like shaking floors, wind, heat, water, smells and more, all to make the experience as believable as possible.

ALL RENDERINGS COURTESY OF THE VOID

Just don’t compare it to a 4-D theater. “They just chuck stuff at you because it lines up with the [movie],” Jensen explains, “whereas in this, you choose to do something and that effect happens to you. The stage is aware of you, and so are all the ghosts.” Tip: Talk to them!

Making the virtual world feel real The proton pack is actually a computer strapped to you by a vest that’s also working to make the virtual world more real. Jensen points out that it’s fairly easy to trick the mind into believing what you’re seeing — indeed, when the visor goes down and the world switches from the “Dimension” ready room into a shabby hallway, you believe it immediately. The next step is to trick your body by giving it real objects — and real consequences when, say, you have a paranormal encounter. “That’s something we do that nobody’s ever done before: Our haptic vest is programmed to be directional,” Jensen says. “So when ghosts pass through you, they pass through you in the correct direction.” So if one sneaks up behind you, that’s where the vest

If you go “Ghostbusters Dimension” Open now Madame Tussauds 234 W. 42nd St. $49.75 madametussauds.com

vibrates first. (Note to the easily scared: “Dimension” is an “Ooh!” rather than “Aah!” experience.)

The next phase “Dimension” is still a work in progress. The Void learns more with every player, and its technology is also advancing. All of the hardware is continually upgraded. Stage effects are also being refined, and a software update is coming “pretty soon,” with the next one addressing one of the inconsistencies in “Dimension”: Your body isn’t visible to you, just your teammates. “Our new update will actually allow you to see your hands and interact with ghosts and objects inside the experience,” Jensen hints. So start planning your punchlines for when you clock that gargoyle with a right hook rather than a proton beam.

Until last summer, veggie burgers would’ve gotten you laughed out of a cookout. But then vegan darling By Chloe started turning out tempeh-lentil and mushroom-seitan burgers that have made it a growing franchise, a former chef at perpetual critics’ favorite Del Posto went vegetarian fast-casual with Superiority Burger, and then pretty much everyone followed suit. And now Cinnamon Snail,

which went from food truck to its ďŹ rst brick-and-mortar restaurant at Penn Station’s food hall The Pennsy, has its own entry. There’s no witchcraft in the smoked sage seitan burger ($12 with tax), but there is plenty of chef Adam Sobel’s philosophy on vegan food, which is to make it avorful and exciting to people who don’t care about vegan food. “To do that, the food I make has to speak to the part of someone’s appetite that innately wants to enjoy the food,â€? he says. If that sounds like this burger might be his version of a gateway drug, well, it kind of is. But it’s also more than that. Unlike the impossibly delicious (and probably carcinogenic) char on a grilled beef patty hot o

the grill, Sobel’s burger is not trying to overwhelm your senses. The smoked sage doesn’t make everything taste like a hippie’s basement. What it does, with the help of smoked chili coconut bacon and roasted garlic aioli, is add depth of avor to the texture play going on between the pretzel buns, pleasantly al dente baked ziti, crunchy marinated kale and the patty itself, as juicy as any beef patty. It’s a little bit silly, and a lot satisfying. The smoked sage seitan burger, along with three new sandwiches on the Snail’s recently launched summer menu, is only available at The Pennsy. Grab it with a beer inside from the food hall’s bar, or take it to its outdoor patio with covered tables and bleacher seating.

Good job, America: Our presidential race is now weirder and more unpleasant than any movie. When even a new “Purge film can’t be scarier than an average Trump rally, you know things are bad. But there’s still plenty to glean from a long history of politics in the movies. BAM’s “Four More Years: An Election Special, which runs through early August, cherry-picks

some of the best and brightest from political cinema’s past, each a time capsule of an era that wasn’t too hot either. You get brainwashed Cold War assassins (“The Manchurian Candidate). You get two husks of Capra-esque corn (“Meet John Doe, “State of the Union). You can see what America was like on the cusp of Nixon (“Shampoo) and as he was about to skedaddle (“All the President’s Men). Relive the Clinton years with the campaign trail doc “The War Room, “Wag the Dog and “Primary Colors. And what on earth will it be like to watch Warren Beatty’s “Bulworth?

Here’s a film in which a candidate launches a shrug emoticon of a campaign, activating a suppressed part of the country by saying whatever is on his mind. But unlike a certain someone, he’s a leftie and cares about minorities. We could use that kind of escapist fantasy right about now.

Insider Tip: While the San Juan Islands have their share of resorts, B&Bs and inns, you can also book affordable cottages, cabins and campgrounds.

Juneau, Alaska You’ll be astounded by Juneau’s wild beauty, whether arriving by air or as part of an Inside Passage cruise. From April through November, visitors are bound to see bald eagles, black bears, mountain goats, harbor seals, sea otters and humpback whales. You can hike, bike, raft or kayak, or take a guided tour lead by naturalists. If you love to fish, there’s no better place to cast a line for halibut or salmon.

Insider Tip: You can actually drive to the mighty Mendenhall Glacier, one of Alaska’s most popular spots. It’s part of the Juneau Icefield, comprised of 40 major glaciers covering 1,500 square miles, Mendenhall is 13 miles outside of Juneau.

Cancun

The Riviera Maya may be the darling of Mexico, but don’t discount the established resort town of Cancun. Powdery white sand fringes the peninsula and most resorts have expansive stretches of beach dotted with Orlando thatched-roof palapas — the perfect spot to relax While the city may be in the shade and particularly hot sip a fruity and crowded, drink. Insider Tip: To beat the heat, visit one of the city’s water parks like Wet ‘n Wild at Universal, or Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t get a little giddy when the majestic geyser erupts within Yellowstone National Park.

Home to the world’s greatest concentration of geysers, including Old Faithful, this national park is well visited every summer. Vacationers may spot elk, bison, wolves and even grizzly bears. Visit Yellowstone (or any national park) on Aug. 25, when admission is free in honor of the National Park Service’s birthday. Insider Tip: The lodges and campgrounds around Yellowstone fill up fast during the summer months. Make reservations early.

The Wildwoods, Jersey Shore This trio of towns along the Jersey Shore — North Wildwood, Wildwood and Wildwood Crest — is known as a family-friendly beach destination. Numerous fun events are held at Wildwoods throughout the summer, including family nights on the boardwalk, Friday night fireworks, the New Jersey State Barbecue Championship, International Kite Festival, traditional Italian festivals and much more.

IN HONOR OF THE GREAT TIM DUNCAN SID ROSENBERG OPINION Sid Rosenberg co-hosts ‘The Bernie and Sid Show’ on WABC in New York. You can reach him on Twitter @SidRosenberg

For thousands, if not millions of years natural disasters have occurred on planet Earth causing humans to adapt and adjust to devastating aftermaths. In September of 1989, Hurricane Hugo swept through the Caribbean — causing over $10 billion in damage and killing over 100 people. Hugo aected millions of lives, but one of the most notable to have been aected by its devastation was Tim Duncan.  Duncan retired from the NBA this past Monday after 19 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, where he won ďŹ ve NBA championships, two Most Valuable Player awards, three NBA Finals MVP awards and an NBA Rookie of the Year award. Not a bad career. Duncan will undoubtedly be a ďŹ rst ballot Hall of Famer and is known by his peers and predecessors as the greatest power forward ever to play the

game. But we may have never met Big Timmy had Hurricane Hugo not ravaged his native Virgin Islands. Prior to Hugo rearing its head, Duncan had aspirations to follow in the footsteps of his older sister, Tricia, who was a swimmer and had represented the Virgin Islands in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke in the 1988 Olympics. But after Hugo destroyed the only Olympic-size swimming pool on the island, Duncan’s

swim team was forced to move its practices to the ocean. Just so has it that Duncan was afraid of sharks, and decided that it was in his best interest to switch to another sport. Duncan would turn to his brother-in-law, who had played basketball in college, and he proceeded to teach him the game. The rest is history. Fast forward to 2016 and the impact that Duncan has left on the game of basketball is astronomical. The humble

Duncan brought integrity to the NBA when it needed it most. The NBA in the late 1990s and early 2000s was highlighted by players getting into melees on the court and misdemeanors o of it. Duncan spent four years at Wake Forest, earning his degree in psychology, at a time when many players were jumping from the high school straight to the ranks of the NBA with hopes of cashing in. Duncan would eventually cash in in 1997 when he was selected

No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. Duncan’s talents impacted the game immediately and veterans took notice. During the 1997 season following a game against the Houston Rockets, future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley was quoted as saying, “I have seen the future and he wears number 21. Duncan was given the nickname “the Big Fundamental for his on-court savvy, which included a repertoire of hook shots, bank shots, bounce pass

and blocks. Duncan played the right way as he kept his emotions in check on the court, credited his teammates for the team’s’ success, and was a pillar o the court in the community.  Duncan was an oasis of humility in a league that is predicated by narcissistic, ego-driven players. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later that American sports fans are blessed with an athlete who has the candor and virtue that Duncan possesses.

Hip Arthritis Pain? Can Newest Medical Treatments Help Avoid Surgery? If you suffer with painful hip arthritis and want medical options to surgery – science may have finally found the possible solution you've been looking for. Here is why: Arthritis develops from failure of internal cells of the joint to produce Synovial Fluid which cushions the joint. Then, wear-and-tear over time can cause the joint to “dry out” and grind down the protective cartilage leading to pain, inflammation and immobility. Let it go too long and your only option may be complete surgical replacement of the hip. But...researchers and doctors have discovered all-natural gel like medicines that are like “joint oil” and can be used to supplement the joint which is drying out... much like adding oil to an automobile. This all-natural gel is quite similar to the naturally occurring lubricating substances in the hip joint. When doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your hip

joint – always with the use of a advanced medical imaging - it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It cushions the joint and can decrease pain and promote healing. This is not cortisone and has no side effects. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months - if not longer. The earlier you treat the hip, the better chance it can help you. Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a health care professional with advanced medical technology only. And the great news is: You can find out if you are a candidate for this advanced medical procedure with our No-Obligation Risk-Free Hip Pain Screening at Downtown NYC Medical. To find out more and schedule your free screening appointment, simply call 800-879-7343
