UBER HITS 2B RIDES SIX MONTHS AFTER HITTING ITS FIRST BILLION

1

Uber has completed more than two billion trips on its app, the company’s chief executive said on Monday, a milestone that arrives just weeks after the ride service added another $4.7 billion to its warchest. Uber hit two billion rides on June 18, CEO Travis Kalanick said in a Facebook post, six months after marking its first billion rides. Uber then completed the same number of rides in six months as it did in the prior six years, due in part to its heavy spending to recruit drivers and passengers, which is made possible by more than $13 billion in funding from investors. Uber is in 450 cities globally, up from 311 a year ago. Last month it raised $3.5 billion from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, part of a funding round that valued the company at $62.5 billion. MAN WITH AX ATTACKS PASSENGERS ON GERMAN TRAIN

2

A man with an ax attacked passengers on a train in the southern German state of Bavaria late on Monday and several people were critically wounded, a police spokesman said. The spokesman said the attack happened on a local train near the city of Wuerzburg. Police hunted the man down with ground searchers and a helicopter, and he was killed. The rail line between Würzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt has been closed, the police spokesman said. There was no indication of the motive for the attack. Four passengers who were attacked were in serious condition, with the total number of wounded unclear, according to the police spokesman. REUTERS

BALTIMORE POLICE LIEUTENANT ACQUITTED IN FREDDIE GRAY CASE

3

A Baltimore police lieutenant was acquitted of manslaughter and two other charges in the April 2015 death of black detainee Freddie Gray, dealing prosecutors another setback in their efforts to secure a conviction in the highly charged case. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams found Lt. Brian Rice not guilty in a bench trial. Rice, 42, was the highest-ranking officer charged after Gray’s death from a broken neck suffered in a police transport van. His death triggered protests and rioting in the mainly black city and stoked a national debate about how police treat minorities. REUTERS

Anti-Trump protests bring turmoil to RNC After a last-ditch attempt to derail Trump failed, candidate’s son threatens leaders of revolt: ‘Your careers are finished.’ The Republican National Convention briefly erupted in chaos on Monday when opponents of presumptive U.S. presidential nominee Donald Trump stormed out of the room and others chanted in a failed attempt to force a vote opposing his candidacy. The turmoil threatened efforts by the Trump campaign to show the party had united behind the businessman-turnedpolitician and distracted from the day’s theme of “Make America Safe Again,” meant to depict Trump as a strong leader capable of shielding the country from violence and Islamist militancy. Trump’s son and adviser, Donald Trump Jr., threatened the leaders of the attempted revolt, saying: “Your careers are finished” in a message posted on Twitter. The anti-Trump forces wanted to change the party’s nominating rules to allow delegates to support alternative Republican candidates over Trump. Party leaders held a voice vote, then declared the opponents lacked enough votes, triggering pandemonium on the floor of the Cleveland basketball arena where Trump is due to be formally nominated this week for the Nov. 8 election. Many delegates began chanting: “Roll call. Roll call,” effectively calling for a lengthy process that would allow every state to weigh in. Some, including the Colorado delegation, walked off the convention floor saying they had to assess their next steps. “This entire system is rigged to force the vote for Donald Trump,” said Kendal Unruh, one of the Colorado delegates. “This is really appall-

ing,” Ken Cuccinelli, a delegate from Virginia who favored a roll-call vote, told MSNBC afterward. “This is the party of law and order. ... If you won’t obey your own rules there is no reason to think you’ll obey any others.” While delivering a sudden jolt to the highly scripted program, the anti-Trump forces failed, their rebellion quashed. The convention then approved the party policy platform and took a scheduled break ahead of a lineup of evening speakers due to include Trump’s wife Melania and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. But the furor, an embarrassment to Trump,

put a spotlight on the deep divisions within the party that have emerged over his candidacy. A string of senior Republicans, worried about Trump’s temperament and policies, were already avoiding the convention.

Killings overshadow convention The gathering opened on Monday afternoon in the shadow of racially tinged killings of police officers and black men. Trump allies planned to promote what he has billed as a tough line on law and order and national security in speeches

later in the day. Sunday’s shooting of three policemen in Baton Rouge — a targeted attack that may have been in retaliation for a series of police killings of black Americans — hung over the gathering. Trump has sought to position himself as the law-and-order candidate in an echo of Richard Nixon’s successful presidential campaign of 1968. Speakers were likely to promise that Trump will crack down on Islamic State abroad and toughen up on crime at home if he wins the election. Iowa’s Republican Party Chairman, Jeff Kaufmann, said that a month ago the top issue for voters in the state was the economy. Now, he said, he was hearing concerns about security. “Rightly or wrongly, the shootings that we’ve had have vaulted, not just national security in terms of external terrorism but also the knowledge that terrorism is occurring within our country,” Kaufmann said. Such concerns might lead voters to choose Trump over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in November, he said. REUTERS; SAM NEWHOUSE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS REPORT

Clinton vows to prosecute police killers Clinton made the promise in a speech in Cincinnati at the NAACP’s annual convention. Hillary Clinton promised on Monday to bring the “full weight of the law” against people who kill police officers if she becomes the next U.S. president after two recent episodes of gunmen slaying police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge. “Anyone who kills a police officer and anyone who helps must be held accountable,” Clinton said. “As president, I will bring the full weight of the law to bear to make sure those who kill police officers are brought to justice.” The penalties for killing a police officer are rightly more severe than those for killing a civilian because police are symbols of the rule of

SpaceX lifts off on cargo run, then lands at launch site An unmanned SpaceX rocket blasted off from Florida early on Monday to send a cargo ship to the International Space Station, then turned around and landed itself back at the launch site. The 23-story-tall Falcon 9 rocket, built and flown by Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 12:45 a.m. EDT. Perched on top of the rocket was a Dragon capsule filled with nearly 5,000 pounds of food, supplies and equipment, including a miniature DNA sequencer, the first to fly in space.

Also aboard the capsule was a metal docking ring of diameter 7.8 feet, that will be attached to the station, letting commercial spaceships under development by SpaceX and Boeing Co. ferry astronauts to the station, a $100-billion laboratory that flies about 250 miles above Earth. The manned craft are scheduled to begin test flights next year. Since NASA retired its fleet of space shuttles five years ago, the United States has depended on Russia to ferry astronauts to and from the station, at a cost of more than $70 million per person. As the Dragon cargo

ship began its two-day journey to the station, the main section of the Falcon 9 booster rocket separated and flew itself back to the ground, touching down a few miles south of its seaside launch pad, accompanied by a pair of sonic booms. “Good launch, good landing, Dragon is on its way,” said NASA mission commentator George Diller. Owned and operated by Musk, the technology entrepreneur who founded Tesla Motors Inc, SpaceX is developing rockets that can be refurbished and reused, potentially slashing launch costs. REUTERS

AFTERMATH IN NICE After Nice attack, French Muslims feel fear and alienation In the poor Nice suburb of Ariane, many Muslims feel their community is being unfairly blamed for the Bastille Day attack that killed 84 people, and fear discrimination and social divisions will grow in its wake. Islamic State claimed the attack and hailed Tunisian-born Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who drove a truck through a crowd of revelers on the French city’s sea-front promenade last Thursday, as one if its soldiers. Prime Minister Manuel Valls said at the weekend that the 31-year-old attacker had been “radicalized very quickly. The Paris prosecutor said on Monday that, while there was no evidence that he had direct links to Islamic State, he had recently developed an interest in radical Islam. In Ariane, a district with a big Muslim population a few kilometers from the Abbatoirs neighborhood where Bouhlel lived, the imam of the local Al Fourkane Mosque said radical groups preyed on the weak, and cautioned against focusing on the killer’s faith. “Because the weak are

being exploited doesn’t mean that we should come down hard on their religion. Quite the opposite. We should be uniting together and defending the country,â€? said Boubekeur Bekri, adding that “a crime is a crimeâ€? regardless of faith. Bouhlel left Tunisia in 2005. His family have painted a picture of a man who suered “psychiatric troublesâ€? and was prone to depression and violent outbursts. He had several run-ins with the law, including a conviction in March this year for hurling a wooden pallet in a road rage incident. Relatives and friends of Bouhlel also described a man who at least until recently drank heavily, smoked marijuana and womanized — behavior at odds with a devout Muslim life. Elabed Lofti, the imam for Antibes and Juan-Les-Pins, is among Muslim leaders in southeastern France who have distanced their community from the attacker. “The guy didn’t observe Ramadan, the minimum to be considered a good Muslim,â€? he said, referring to the Muslim fasting month that ended in early July. REUTERS

Louisiana gunman targeted and ambushed cops, police say The city had been the scene of repeated protests against police violence following the July 5 fatal shooting by officers of Alton Sterling. The black U.S. Marine Corps veteran who shot dead three police officers in Louisiana’s capital specifically targeted them, police said on Monday, as the United States reeled from the latest deadly violence involving police and black people. Following Sunday’s shootings, Baton Rouge police officers took steps to increase their own security. Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola said, “We usually ride solo. We’re riding in pairs for now. The Baton Rouge gunman has been identified as Gavin Long, a 29-yearold from Kansas City, Missouri, who served in the Marines for five years, including a 2008 deployment in the Iraq War. Long, dressed in black and armed with a rifle, was shot dead on Sunday morning in a gunfight

with police. Long had legally changed his name in May 2015 to Cosmo Ausar Setepenra, according to records in Jackson County, Missouri. Racial tension in the United States has been especially high since a black former U.S. Army Reserve soldier fatally shot five Dallas police officers who were patrolling a protest over the police shootings of Sterling and another black man in Minnesota. “It’s a very tough situation here, an attack on the very fabric of society,â€? Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards told MSNBC on Monday. Louisiana State Police spokesman Lt. J.B. Slaton

told the New York Times on Monday that a preliminary investigation shows the Baton Rouge gunman “definitely ambushed those officers.â€? â€œWe are still trying to find out what his motive was, and that’s going to be part of our investigation. But we believe he was targeting those officers,â€? Slaton said.  A website, social media accounts and YouTube videos that appeared tied to Long include complaints about police treatment of black people and praise for killings of the Dallas policemen. Documents also showed that Long pledged affiliation to an African-American offshoot of the U.S. anti-

government Sovereign Citizen Movement. The dead officers in Baton Rouge were identified as Montrell Jackson, 32; Matthew Gerald, 41; and Brad Garafola, 45. Edwards said one of the wounded officers was fighting for his life while a second underwent surgery and needed further surgery on his neck. A third officer who had a graze wound to his neck was released from a hospital on Sunday.  At the B Quick gas station where the shootings occurred, people left flowers and balloons in memory of the slain officers. “I just want us to have peace and drive down the road and not feel like we have to duck our heads and look around and see if someone’s going to be on top of a roof,â€? said Pam Collins, a resident of the Baton Rouge suburb of Prairieville who brought three shiny balloons to honor the officers. Law enforcement officials were working to determine if the Baton Rouge gunman acted alone or conspired with others, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden told CNN. REUTERS

Why does drama follow this “nice girl”? The backlash against America’s “sweetheart,” Taylor Swift just seems to be getting worse. Soon after being put on blast by ex Calvin Harris for announcing that she was the ghostwriter on his hit song, “This Is What You Came For,” other celebs were quick to join the #TaylorSwiftIsOver party, including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who accused Swift of being a liar. The “Bad Blood” singer asserts she did not give West permission to use her name in his song, “Famous,” but a phone conversation released Sunday by Kardashian indicates otherwise. In the recorded exchange between Swift and West, the singer says: “Um, yeah, I mean go with whatever line

Calvin Harris moves on, too After scoring a rumored James Bond as her rebound boyfriend, it looked like Taylor Swift had won her breakup with Calvin Harris. Now the DJ has found new love too — but is he still looking out for his ex? According to Page Six, Harris is dating musician Tinashe, who collaborated with him in 2014 on the song “Dollar Signs.” The couple were spotted at sushi spot Nobu on Saturday night. “It’s only been weeks, so it’s still pretty casual right now,” according to the Page Six source. “They’ve been on a few dates.” Good for Harris, but the timing seems a bit convenient. The source had no comment on the happy coincidence of the couple’s sushi craving and Swift’s latest bout of bad press, courtesy of Kim Kardashian. But hey, there’s no such thing, right?

Bieber blames fan for “ruining the moment” If Justin Bieber has taught us anything, it’s to love ourselves. Not him. No photos, please, and apparently no gifts, either. When Biebs decided to take a quick break from performing at the Atlantic City venue for his Purpose tour Friday night to speak to his adoring Beliebers, he was interrupted by some obnoxious hat tosser. Safe to say, this fan had no chill. Of course, Bieber being Bieber, he responded with something very Bieber-y: “Take this moment to listen and try not to give me a hat or whatever you’re trying to throw onto the stage right now, because I probably don’t want that s**t,”

said the singer. Then, Bieber realized that he may have gone too far, “Sorry, maybe that was a bit mean,” he immediatley added. And the singer didn’t stop there. “I just wanted to take this moment to ac-

Kristen Stewart had two movies out last weekend. One was “Equals,” a sci-fi indie; the other was “Cafe Society,” the new Woody Allen film. She thinks that’s weird. “I just figure you’d have to really, really like me to see two movies in one weekend,” she jokes. We’re talking “Cafe Society,” in which the 26-year-old plays a woman in 1930s Hollywood who falls for a young man (Jesse Eisenberg), even though she’s sleeping with his movie mogul uncle (Steve Carell). She chooses the uncle, and the two part ways, only to reconnect much later, when their lives have dramatically changed. Were you someone who watched all of Woody Allen’s movies growing up? I haven’t seen all of his movies — not even in the least. The ones I really like are, obviously, “Annie Hall.” My favorite is

“Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” I love that movie so much it’s crazy.

make the wrong choice?” I’m like, “I dunno.” It’s not about that.

They can be dark and honest, but in a way that doesn’t feel depressing. It’s just like, “That’s life!” I think he has a casual approach to his anxieties. People who are so overwhelmed and tripped-out about anxieties are actually not that anxiety-ridden. Because the ones that are are like, “I’ve been dealing with this since I was born. I’ve always been thinking these existential, pit-ofthe-stomach thoughts that you can’t get past.” That’s interesting to me. Without being really sad or feeling a lot of pain, you’re never going to be happy.

Woody has a very unusual way with actors. He doesn’t like to talk to them or give them much direction. Some actors love it and some are freaked out by it. How was it for you? It didn’t take me long to get used to his blunt nature. Most directors are always protecting their precious little actors and their egos. They want to fill them with confidence, because a more confident actor is better. He kind of does the opposite. If I ever had questions I knew not to ask him, because he really wants you to think about it yourself. That feels nice. There’s a little confidence you can take from that. But also, he would walk up to me and say, “You look terrible.”

The characters here are really up-and-down like that. They have great heartbreak, then they move on but still think fondly of the past. What I like about this movie is it’s so optimistic. People think it’s sad, but [her character] isn’t sad and [Jesse Eisenberg’s character] isn’t sad. You have two characters who look back at something and think, “I don’t need to own it or hold onto it to value it.” Every single person asks me, “Did she

Seriously? Oh yeah. Because he doesn’t like the dress. “We have to change it.” He just has no… Social graces? Like, none. I would say, “Am I f—ing this up completely?” And Jesse was like, “It’s just the way he is.”

For Annielly Camargo, a recent high school graduate from Allston, home is an uncomfortable place riddled with her aunt’s smoking addiction. “I lived in the projects where there were too many people and living under circumstances that probably shouldn’t have been allowed, she says. “This piece is to show the routine that somebody can have and how it sticks to their whole lives, but also the effects it has on other people. Camargo is one of the teen artists featured in the Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibit “HOMiE: In Our Eyes. She, along with the 43 other Boston Public School students, were prompted to illustrate an answer to the question: What is home? To celebrate their 10th anniversary, the Museum of Fine Arts’ Teen Arts Council will

showcase artwork from Boston high school students through the HOMiE exhibit, on display through the start of next year. The leadership development program’s manager, Shilo Kuriakose, says the museum chose the theme “homeâ€? for their first teen art exhibit because “[the group] wanted something that would allow teens to talk about other sub topics like identity [and] culture ‌ things that contribute to home.â€? Although still considered youths, each artist has a developed sense of home shaped by poignant experiences. Just as there is a variety of art forms being used — from acrylic to color pencil to digital media — the Boston students illustrate a variety of narratives that evoke sub topics like love, family, death and war. “We all have different backgrounds, and each different background has something unique and special about it,â€? featured artist Abigail Alexis explains. “For us to come to one room and express these different backgrounds is awesome.â€? The exhibit was curat-

ed by the Teen Arts Council, which consisted of 12 members, and was mentored by MFA staff as well as professionals from the surrounding community such as Nadeem Mazen, Cambridge city councilor and founder of danger!awesome and Nimblebot, and Jay Calderin, founder of Boston Fashion Week. This is the first exhibition of juried artwork by teens at the MFA. Teen Arts Council member Candace Waldron believes that including the TAC in the creation of the exhibit, from the curating process to the name of the exhibit, will help the exhibit — and the museum itself — appeal better to teens. With topics ranging from family to immigration, sports and Playstation, the exhibit reflects what Waldron wanted to be a diverse and interesting exhibition for her peers. “Now when people come and look at this exhibition, they can see what teens consider to be art and what we consider to be cool, she adds. “Teens will definitely come more because of this and come to see what the museum has to offer.

10 EDUCATION GUIDE

How to identify testing bias Whether it’s the SAT or a vocational exam, understanding how tests work is as important as knowing the material.

while others did not have these words in their vocabularies. Though class and racial bias are most talked about, testing bias can take many forms.

Stereotype threat

ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa

alizah.salario@metro.us

When Sheila Akbar, director of education at test prep company Signet Education, took a practice exam for the new SAT, one passage threw her off. In the reading section, students were asked to analyze a letter exchange between two women in the 1830s arguing about whether they should get involved in the abolitionist movement. (The SAT often incorporates essays, letters and other historical documents from civil rights struggles). One woman was for; the other, who was against, argued that a woman’s place is in the home.

Subtle testing bias can be hard to spot. ISTOCK

Akbar, a seasoned test taker, was rattled. “It literally said women are inferior to men. I found myself getting philosophically engaged, and getting angry, she said. “And then I thought, ‘Oh wait, I’m on the clock, I need to get to my questions and stay focused.’ And then I started thinking, ‘I’m in

a room of 16, 17-year-old kids. What if any of them are upset by this?â€? Akbar says that any type of bias can distract from the task at hand — acing the exam. Though the SAT was recently revamped, no test is perfect, says Akbar. She identified three types of testing bias — in all types of tests â€” that stu-

dents should be aware of. Â

Language bias

One of the reasons many tests, including the SAT, have removed analogies and other vocabularyheavy questions is because certain words used — such as “yacht or “polo — were familiar to some (wealthier) students,

A question in the math section about gender differences in enrollment in high school math classes also set off a red flag for Akbar. The question indicated that in all classes except for one, more boys were enrolled than girls, which, says Akbar, might pull a female student’s focus off the question and onto the stereotypes about girls and math. “We know that when minorities groups are faced with stereotypes about their own demographic, they become extra anxious about not confirming that stereotype, and that actually leads them to perform worse, since they’re worried about something

other than what the test items actually are.

Administration bias It’s not just tests themselves that can be biased, but the way they’re administered. If a test proctor isn’t following protocol, or test-takers haven’t been given the correct amount of time, results can be skewed. Though test-takers have the right to report any kind of break in protocol, they often don’t. Says Akbar, “It’s a little unrealistic to expect a 17-year-old to make a complaint to a company that controls their scores. Test-takers can’t control bias, but they can increase their awareness. “Always do official practice tests in a timed, realistic setting, says Akbar. “That way, if there are elements of bias, you’ll be aware of it before you go into the full test.

The best colleges for your buck Higher education is expensive. This we know. What’s not so cut-anddry is determining which colleges and universities offer the best value — meaning an affordable, quality education with promising career options. Money magazine’s recently released Best Colleges survey considers just that — the comparative value of 1,500 colleges and universities nationwide. “Best” is determined by a whole host of factors, including alumni success, education quality and affordability. Ranking No. 1 overall was Princeton University, where 59 percent of students receive need-based financial aid and the average out of pocket cost is $20,100 per student — a steep difference from the $61,300 sticker price for the 2016-7 school year. Berea College, Brigham Young University-Provo and College of the Ozarks were the top three most affordable private colleges, and among

many of the lesser-known universities highlighted in the study. Strikingly, the study found that criteria often used to anoint a handful of schools as the cream of the crop — status, selectivity and sticker price — don’t often reveal much about the quality of the education, or the school’s potential for career preparedness. Learning for learn-

ing’s sake is great, and the most important takeaways from a college education — personal growth, the ability to discuss critically and think trenchantly — can’t be quantified. That being said, sometimes a crucial question is glossed over in those glossy photos of pastoral campuses: After graduation, will you be able to find a job? ALIZAH SALARIO

What else does it mean? It means that admissions counselors can show off our campus, answer your questions and guide you through our selection process—even before you apply. It means personal success coordinators and a closely-knit student body that can help make America’s biggest college town feel a little more like home. In the classroom, it means a wide variety of Associates and Bachelor’s degree programs in such in-demand fields as healthcare, business, fashion, criminal justice and more. No matter which program you choose, it means learning in small classes from accessible professors with real-world experience in their field.

Just a potatoes and cauliflower kind of gal Who says veggies can’t be a main course? CARLY OLSON @carlyolson28

carlyolson@metro.us

Nikki Dinki didn’t always eat her vegetables. After two decades of subsisting on mostly cereal, bagels and instant ramen, “Picky Nikki decided it was time for a transformation. Now, the co-host of Cooking Channel’s “Junk Food Flip has done a complete 360, advocating for delicious fare that centers on the veggies she once despised. In her cookbook “Meat on the Side, Dinki has created dishes that even nonvegetable lovers can get behind. Dinki stresses that giving up meat isn’t a must for healthful eating — but let the veggies take center stage. How did you develop your meat-on-the-side philosophy? I really started eating meat on the side because

I didn’t really eat anything until I was 20 — no veggies and no protein. I started to eat veggies before introducing myself to meat — chicken, then fish, then pork. Vegetables have always been the core of my cooking background. What’s a good way to introduce vegetables to someone who’s less nutritionally minded? The best thing to do if you’re not used to eating vegetables is to weave them into dishes you already love. It takes a while of slowly incorporating new tastes until you really like them on their own. A good introductory food is my spaghetti squash “mac and cheese or a cauliflower crust pizza — who doesn’t love pizza? How would you get picky kids to eat their vegetables? For kids it’s more of a trick just getting the food into their mouths.

Sometimes the look of something can be a big turn off. In the book, there are family friendly modifications next to some recipes. For example, pureeing the chunky veggies in a sauce or sprinkling a little bit of cheese on top. What’s something more experimental that you’ve cooked? A lot of times I try and recreate classic, meat-heavy dishes into meat-on-the-side versions. I made a carrot hotdog — it took a lot of tries! I saute and marinate the carrot in Worcestershire, paprika, chili powder — lots of hearty flavors. It really looks like a hotdog and has a smoky, meaty flavor, too.

Kale Egg Chips From Nikki Dinki’s “Meat on the Sideâ€? (St. Martin’s Press) Makes 8 Egg Cups; Serves 4 Ingredients: • 1 medium yellow onion • 1 red bell pepper • 4 fully cooked breakfast sausage patties • 8 large kale leaves • 1 tablespoon olive oil • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • ½ cup shredded mozzarella • 8 large eggs • 8 teaspoons grated Parmesan cheese Method: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 8-cup muďŹƒn pan and set the pan aside. Place a medium saucepan of water over high heat and bring to a boil. Chop the onion and bell pepper and cut the sausage patties into Âź-inch pieces. Set aside. One at a time, hold each kale leaf by its stem and dip it into the boiling water until

it turns bright green, about 5 seconds, then lay it on some paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to drain. Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion, bell pepper and salt, and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the sausage and saute just until it turns brown, 2 to 3 minutes more. Remove the skillet from the heat. One at a time, pat each kale leaf dry with a paper towel. Cut away its stem and then cut the leaf crosswise into 3 pieces. Line the bottom and sides of a prepared muďŹƒn cup with the 3 pieces, overlapping them and making sure to cover the sides, all the way to the top. Repeat the procedure to line all of the cups. Put 1 tablespoon of the mozzarella in each cup; top that with a spoonful of the vegetable and sausage mixture, making sure there is still room in the cup for an egg. Crack an egg into each cup and then sprinkle

Tips for the best summer skin

We consult a pro about facing the season’s heat, humidity and sweat. CHLOE TSANG @chloversx

letters@metro.us

Picture this: It’s 95 degrees out (read: 105 degrees for you brave souls facing the scorching underworld known as the T). You are a hot, sweaty mess — the makeup is literally melting off your face. You finally make it to your air-conditioned home, only to look in the mirror and find a zit. Walking on sunshine? We think not. At a recent launch party for acne medicine Aczone gel, we chatted with Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai in New York, about keeping skin in tip-top shape during the summer.

With the right skin care routine, summer beauty will be no sweat. ISTOCK

Change up your skin care routine with the seasons “The cleansers and moisturizers that you’re using in the fall and winter may not be the same ones that’ll be

appropriate in the summertime,” says Zeichner. He recommends switching to a lighter moisturizer and heavier cleanser for the warm weather months. And if you’re feeling oily, switch to a cleanser

that foams or contains an exfoliating ingredient like salicylic acid, he says.

Watch your diet Foods high in sugar and starch (in other

words, all the foods we really like to eat) are probably the ones causing skin inflammation and acne, says Zeichner. Some studies also suggest dairy may also be associated with breakouts. To keep your skin feeling its best, make sure your diet includes plenty of green leafy vegetables with antioxidants, fresh fish — “particularly salmon with omega-3 fatty acids” — and probiotics, he says.

For oil control, fake it till you make it

Slather on that SPF

Your pores are here to stay

Sometimes, less is more — but when it comes to sunscreen, “more is more,” Zeichner tells us. “Apply, reapply and choose the highest numbers.” If your moisturizer doesn’t have a built-in SPF, you’ll need SPF over it (Zeichner recommends at least an SPF 30 for his patients).

“It’s a myth that cold water will shrink your pores,” Zeichner warns. “You’re born with your pores looking a certain size. But if you can remove oil, the pores will look less prominent. All those tips we talked about to reduce oiliness will also help with pores — and pore strips work!”

The bad news: Your brain controls your oil glands, so it’s hard to truly decrease oil production. The good news: There are still things you can do to make your skin look less shiny. “You can change your cleanser, you can think about clay masks — they absorb oil — and of course [use] blotting papers,” says Zeichner.

For centuries, Olympic athletes have been trying to get bigger, stronger and faster by any means necessary. GETTY IMAGES

Doping a time-honored tradition Would a ‘wild west’ PED-scenario be the worst thing? MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The majority of the millions of people who watch the Summer Olympics every four years are casual fans, dropping in to watch these niche sports for entertainment purposes. The sheer spectacle of the Olympic games almost always overwhelms the ugly realities — host cities left in financial ruin, IOC scandals and major doping issues. Mark Johnson, author of the book “Spitting in the Soup: Inside the Dirty Game of Doping in Sports,” is an expert on that last topic, and he says that allowing athletes to use any and all

performance-enhancing drugs in the Olympics isn’t any crazier than what comes from the current system in place. “WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] only finds 1-2 percent of dopers right now,” Johnson told Metro. “It’s pretty easy to — in a lot of sports — plan your doping so you don’t have any drugs in your system when you’re competing. Most of the PEDs allow athletes to train a lot harder and recover a lot faster, but during actual competition they can still be completely clean. It’s really an intelligence test. If you’re working with a good doctor and you time everything right, you can always get by.”

Old story, new problems The big doping story

heading into the Rio summer games, which begin Aug. 5, concerns Russia and its “statesponsored doping program.” According to the BBC, Russia “directed, controlled and oversaw manipulation of urine samples provided by its athletes” in the build-up to the London games in 2012 through the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. Not surprising in the least, says Johnson, but he adds there is a great deal of hypocrisy from those scolding Russia. The never-ending quest to get all drugs out of the Olympics is impossible, if not laughable. “We have this idea that we need go get back to a ‘cleaner era,’” Johnson said. “The problem though is that this cleaner era never really existed. Testing is much stricter now

than it was 50 years ago, but athletes trying to get an edge through drugs has been going on literally forever. Finding new ways to get bigger, faster and stronger was seen as a part of the craft of sport at one time. It was like utilizing new forms of technology. In the 1960s, particularly in the U.S., those attitudes started to change. Because of all the recreational drug use and abuse at that time we started to pay closer attention to performance-enhancing drugs as well. All of a sudden, doping went from something that all athletes did as a form of training to a mark of moral failing. In the last 50 years the surveillance and the creation of these anti-doping agencies is pretty dramatic.” Despite the stricter testing, there is a preva-

lent idea that “everybody is on something” anyway. “Most of the athletes don’t want to do these drugs at first,” Johnson said. “They have to hire doctors and the drugs themselves are expensive. It can also get dangerous. They don’t want that hassle, obviously, but once it becomes the norm in their sport then they kind of have to reach for [the drugs]. I don’t really think the crime and punishment approach is supereffective.” Johnson admits there’s no great answer to solving the issue of doping in the Olympics. If it was the wild west and everything was on the table, athletes [and countries] with deeper pockets would routinely come out ahead. Many athletes would also take the rawest and most

dangerous forms of steroids to compete at the highest level, and that would in turn lead to major health problems. “We should focus on the drugs that are really harmful and not worry about, say, busting athletes for using pot,” Johnson said. “In the U.S., we’ve really created a huge legal loophole with selling supplements. They’re everywhere. We’ve created a culture where it’s OK to use ADHD drugs as a regular citizen, but if an athlete uses the same drug and they’re popped for it they’re suddenly the bad guys. In America we’ve stated that doping is fine, ‘except for you athletes.’ It’s like a mother saying, ‘Johnny, don’t you dare smoke,’ but then a half hour later she goes out and buys a pack of Marlboro reds.’”

True will have medal potential in Rio Olympics The New England native will be a medal contender in triathlon. JASON DEVANEY @Jason_Devaney1 sports@metro.us

Two things have changed for triathlete Sarah True since the 2012 Olympics: her speed and her last name. True finished fourth in London four years ago, missing the podium by 10 seconds. Since then, she’s amassed quite a collection of medals and accolades. Formerly known as Sarah Groff, she also got married to professional runner Ben True in 2014. “Last time around, I was simply happy to be an Olympian, to be part of the Olympic experience,” True said on a recent media call. “When I finished a very close fourth place, it made me realize that I was a potential medalist. It absolutely reframed how I

saw myself as an athlete. For the past four years, I have been training to be in the medal mix in Rio.” The other half of her training since London, at least mentally, was the hope of qualifying for Rio with her husband, who competes in track & field. Unfortunately, that part of the equation didn’t work out after Ben came up short of qualifying in the 5,000 meters at the Olympic Trials. “It’s still pretty raw for both of us,” said True, who was born and currently lives in Hanover, New Hampshire. “This is something that the person I love has worked for for years. For the last four years, I’ve had this vision of the two of us going to the Olympics together and experiencing it as a married couple.” True quickly had to change her mindset and, as she put it, completely focus on herself and her own Olympic aspirations. Her post-London

resume indicates her chances of leaving with some hardware are pretty strong. True ended the 2014 season as the No. 2-ranked athlete in the world rankings, and the following year she was third. Her first career win on the ITU World Series came in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2014. She won the same race a year later. True noted that she’s become a better racer since 2012, which came from simply racing more often. As for Rio, she doesn’t have a specific goal but knows she can put herself into contention to earn a medal. “It’s a very strong field and it’s going to be an incredibly hard race, so I can’t go down with any sort of expectations for results,” True said. “But I do want to go down there and race as if I’m a medal contender. “I want to be in the mix. I proved to myself in 2012 I’m capable of being in the medal mix.”
