PARENTS OF BOY KILLED BY ALLIGATOR AT RESORT WILL NOT SUE

1

The parents of a 2-year-old boy drowned by an alligator at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida last month “are broken” but will not sue over the incident, the couple said in a statement on Wednesday. Lane Graves was playing at the edge of the Seven Seas Lagoon at the Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on June 14 when he was snatched by an alligator and dragged into the water. His parents rushed to save their child but failed to pry him free from the predator’s grip, as a second alligator attacked during the rescue attempt. Graves, whose family was vacationing from Nebraska, was found by divers a day later at the bottom of the manmade lake. REUTERS

TURKEY PREPARES EMERGENCY MEASURES AFTER POST-COUP PURGE

2

Turkey will announce emergency measures on Wednesday to try to shore up stability and prevent damage to the economy as it purges thousands of members of the security forces, judiciary, civil service and academia after an abortive coup. One of the ruling AK Party’s most senior figures, Mustafa Sentop, a close ally of President Tayyip Erdogan, said the constitution allowed for a state of emergency to be declared, though he said he did not know if such a step would be taken. Speaking live on broadcaster NTV, he said any state of emergency would last up to six months and would not affect citizens’ lives. He also called for the restoration of the death penalty for crimes aimed at changing the constitutional order. REUTERS

DIRECTOR, PRODUCER AND WRITER GARRY MARSHALL DEAD AT 81

Director, producer and writer Garry Marshall, who was responsible for creating sitcom hits such as “The Odd Couple” and “Happy Days” and directed hit movies “Pretty Woman” and “The Princess Diaries,” died on Tuesday, Variety reported. He was 81. Marshall died in Burbank, California, from complications of pneumonia after a stroke, his representative Michelle Bega told USA Today. “The Odd Couple,” a hit sitcom created and produced by Marshall, began a five-year run on ABC in 1970. The show, starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, received Emmy nominations and wins for the comedy series based on Neil Simon’s play about two divorced men with different lifestyles who are forced to share an apartment. Can Donald Trump save the RNC from itself? The convention has been plagued by disunity and a plagiarism allegation. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @MetroNewYork

Donald Trump will take the stage Thursday to accept the Republican Party’s nomination to run for president on the final day of a national convention that many hoped would unify the party, temper the candidate’s image and give him a boost in the polls. But the first two days of the convention, that Trump once promised would be a showbiz extravaganza like nothing before it, have been a series of stumbles that have raised the stakes for what already was the most important speech he’s ever likely to make. Republican strategist Ed Rollins, who is advising a “super PAC” supporting Trump, said he can’t afford to make any mistakes at this point, The

New York Times reported. “His speech is the whole game,” Rollins told the Times. “Viewers have to watch it and say, ‘There is the next president of the United States.’” Other political experts said the four-day convention in Cleveland hasn’t accomplished much in positioning Trump to take on his Democratic foe, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “The first two days have been sort of a number of incidents that I think have stepped on what I’m sure Trump

in a rules fight on the first day. That display of party discord was followed by the embarrassment of Melania Trump, the candidate’s wife, being accused of plagiarism for lifting part of her speech from one given by Michelle Obama in 2008. The lack of A-list speakers, and up-and-coming Republicans has also been a drawback, especially after Trump promised a lineup of all-stars and winners, including Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who declined the invitation.

over the last generation,” he said. “Nobody from the Bush family is there; in addition, you don’t have anyone from the Romney group as well, so I think that’s what’s really remarkable.” “I do sense that there is a bit of breath-holding at the convention,” Brown added. Brown said in order for Trump to bring the RNC to a crescendo, he’ll have to rely on tips from Ronald Reagan’s 1980 acceptance of the nomination. “The first thing [Reagan] did in 1980 was he spoke with a level of specificity about his agenda and Trump really hasn’t done that before,” Brown said. “I suspect he’s going to try to speak as Ronald Reagan did in 1980 beyond the diehard backers of his party and his candidacy to those who might not be informed about what Trump is all about or might not be paying as much attention and they need to be convinced in a slightly different way.”

“The first two days have been sort of a number of incidents that I think have stepped on what I’m sure Trump would have wanted to be a much cleaner and stronger message about his candidacy.” Egan

would have wanted to be a much cleaner and stronger message about his candidacy,” said Patrick Egan, a political science professor at NYU. The missteps at the convention have overshadowed the message, beginning with the lastditch effort by the Never Trump delegates to try to deny him the nomination

Heath Brown, assistant professor at CUNY City University of New York Grad Center and John Jay College, said the lack of A-listers isn’t unusual for a GOP event, but the lack of rising and established Republican stars is a glaring omission. “You don’t have anyone from the most significant Republican group

A man and a woman were both convicted Tuesday on charges stemming from the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Saugus, footage of which was later disseminated on the Snapchat messaging app. Rashad Deihim, 21, and Kailyn Bonia, 20, were both found guilty by a jury in Essex Superior Court in Salem, according to the Boston Globe. The pair faced a number of charges, including two counts of assault to rape, four counts of indecent assault and battery

on a person over 14, and a single count each of kidnapping and lascivious posing of a child in the nude. Deihim was found guilty on all eight charges, while the jury found Bonia guilty on all charges except the lascivious posing of a child in the nude, The Saugus Advertiser reported. Both are due back to be sentenced on Sept. 6, according to WCVB. The court revoked both defendants’ bail in the

meantime. “I want to thank the jury for their careful attention to the evidence in this case,” Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a statement. “I must also commend the victim for her courage in facing her assailants in court. I hope that, with this verdict, she is assured that what happened to her was not her fault.” Defense attorneys argued that the encounter, which took place near a local elementary school, was a consensual sex act, but prosecutors said the then minor victim, now 18, was too drunk to consent. The girl also reportedly testified that she had little memory of what happened, and woke up in “severe pain” at a hospital the next morning. A witness who saw video of the attack said there were visible injuries on her body.

Somerville police union objects to ‘Black Lives Matter’ banner hung on City Hall Letter to mayor citing recent attacks on law enforcement says “All Lives Matter” would be more appropriate.

CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

chris.caesar@metro.us

The Somerville Police Employee’s Association wrote an open letter to Mayor Joseph Curtatone Tuesday, alerting his office that

its members are “deeply troubled” that the city continues to display a “Black Lives Matter” banner over the main entrance of City Hall. The letter, asking that the banner be removed, states that one reading

“All Lives Matter” would be more appropriate. “It is as inconceivable to us as it is demoralizing that our city would propagate its support for this movement while standing silent over the seemingly daily protest assassina-

tions of innocent police officers around the country,” the letter read. “The Association is opposed to the misuse of excessive force, including deadly force, as are the well-intentioned members of the BLM movement. However, it is clear that fringe elements of that movement, and other protest movements, are provoked to indiscriminate violence against police officers in their name. “Indeed, the removal of that banner and the placement of a banner stating ‘ALL LIVES MATTER’ would reflect appropriate concerns that police officers everywhere, as they do in Somerville, use deadly force only when necessary to protect the public or themselves from substantial harm, while simultaneously condemning the reprehensible murder of innocent police officers.” The letter cites the attack in Dallas that left five officers killed and seven wounded, saying the sniper was “linked” to the movement. Another officer in Minnesota experienced broken vertebrae when a concrete block was dropped on his head by a Black Lives Matter protester, the letter said. Many prominent activists from the Black Lives Matter movement, including DeRay Mckesson, have condemned violence against police and reiterated their call for nonviolent protests. The police association’s president,

Somerville City Hall DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

Michael McGrath, who signed the letter, and Vice President Alan Monaco did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The banner was raised last August, with the help of Black Lives Matter Cambridge, according to a Boston Globe report at the time. Then, the seventerm mayor said it represented “a very clear statement ... that we recognize that structural racism exists in our society.” Curtatone issued a statement late Tuesday saying the banner — and one honoring police — would remain in place. “My unwavering support for our police officers does not and cannot preempt our commitment to addressing systemic racism in our nation. “The City of Somerville stands against all violence and all injustice, which is why a Black Lives Matter banner hangs at City Hall and why a banner in honor of the slain officers is hanging at Somerville Police Headquarters where it would provide the most moral support to our officers — both on my order. Both banners will remain hanging. “... Peaceful protest to end violence and injustice stands at the core of our nation’s values and our democracy and we will continue our peaceful protest via the banner. Violence is never justified, and that is the message that both of our banners — for Black Lives Matter and for the slain officers — are intended to make.”

AG Healey’s office announces new focus on ‘copycat’ assault weapons Over 10,000 of the guns were sold in the state last year, according to Attorney General Maura Healey. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS

chris.caesar@metro.us

An estimated 10,000 “copycatâ€? assault weapons were sold in Massachusetts last year alone, the state attorney general’s office announced Wednesday. That revelation is prompting Attorney General Maura Healey to issue a notice to all gun sellers and manufacturers in the state that her office will step up enforcement of the state’s assault weapons ban, including a crackdown on such copycat sales. That state law mirrors a federal ban that expired in 2004, prohibiting specific namebrand weapons, as well as copies or duplicates of those weapons. Some manufacturers market what are known as “state compliantâ€? versions of those same guns, with minor tweaks to various parts of the weapon, a statement from the office said. The state considers a firearm a copycat if the gun’s internal operating system is essentially the

same as those of a specifically-banned weapon, or if the gun has key functional components that are interchangeable with those of a banned weapon. “The gun industry has openly defied our laws here in Massachusetts for nearly two decades,â€? Healey said in a statement. â€œThat ends today. We have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that combat-style weapons are off our streets and out of the hands of those who would use them to kill innocent people. Increasingly, these guns are the weapon of choice for mass shooters, and we will do everything we can to prevent the kinds of tragedies here that have occurred in places like Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown and Aurora.â€? “These types of assault weapons have no place on our streets,â€? Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said. “We have tough gun laws in our state, and this notice will make them even tougher. I applaud AG Healey and her efforts to help make our state and all our cities safer.â€? The guidance will not be enforced against gun owners who bought or sold these weapons before July 20.

BUS CRASH Crash with MBTA bus, 2 cars injures 9 Nine people were injured in a crash involving two cars and an MBTA bus in Revere Wednesday morning, according to reports. None of the injuries were life-threatening, Fox 25 reported. Eight of those injured were on the bus, according to WCVB. According to WBZ, police

said the bus was at a stop on North Shore Road just before 10 a.m. when a green sedan tried to pass it. The vehicle then hit a silver SUV, causing the car to careen several yards, hitting a street sign and agpole before coming to a stop on a residential lawn. Another injury reportedly included a driver of one of the vehicles. CHRIS CAESAR

France orders Microsoft to stop collecting excessive user data

The CNIL said the U.S. company had three months to stop tracking browsing by users so that Windows apps and third-party apps can offer them targeted advertising without their consent, failing which it could initiate a sanctions procedure.

The French data protection authority on Wednesday ordered Microsoft Corporation to stop collecting excessive data on users of its Windows 10 operating system and serving them personalized ads without their consent. A number of EU data protection authorities created a contact group to investigate Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system following its launch in July 2015, the French privacy watchdog said. The action against Microsoft mirrors that taken by the CNIL against Facebook, which was ordered in February to stop collecting users’ information then used for advertising without their consent. Microsoft processes in-

formation on all the apps downloaded and installed on Windows by a user and the time spent on each one to identify problems and improve its products. However the CNIL said it considered this to be excessive since the data “are not necessary for the operation of the service.” The French watchdog also said that Microsoft puts advertising cookies on users’ terminals without properly informing them beforehand or giving them a chance to opt out. “It has been decided to make the formal notice public due to, among other reasons, the seriousness of the breaches and the number of individuals concerned [more than 10 million Windows users on French territory],” the CNIL said in a statement. “The purpose of the notice is not to prohibit any advertising on the company’s services but, rather, to enable users to make their choice freely, having been properly informed of their rights.”

While the fines that can currently be levied by European data protection authorities are paltry compared to the revenues of big U.S. tech companies, a new European Union data protection law set to enter into force in two years provides for fines of up to 4 percent of a company’s annual global turnover. In addition, the CNIL said Microsoft was still illegally transferring data to the United States using the Safe Harbour framework, which was struck down by the top EU court in October on concerns about mass U.S. surveillance practices. Companies have had to rely on alternative legal structures such as “model clauses” to move data across the Atlantic in line with tough EU data transferral rules. However a source at the company said that Microsoft uses model clauses for U.S. data transfers and is only still certified under Safe Harbour due to contractual obligations. REUTERS

T-REX-VOLUTION Amid two exhausting weeks in the rattle and hum of the political conventions, I have escaped to a Denny’s for breakfast. No bullhorns or raging bitterness. Just eggs, pancakes and a hilarious kid at the next table. “I’d like to have a T-Rex,” he says as his younger brother grins and his parents stare blank-faced. They’re probably recalling some ill-considered previous pet now known simply as “the cat episode.” The kid then describes all the great things he’d do with his dino friend. It would wake him in the morning. Go to school with him. Birthday parties. Baseball practice. I’m crouching over my hash browns thinking how it really would not work that way. Drugmakers race for smart inhalers Makers of inhalers to treat asthma and chronic lung disease are racing to develop a generation of smart devices with sensors to monitor whether patients are using their puffers properly. Linked wirelessly to the cloud, the gadgets are part of a medical “internet of things” that promises improved adherence, or correct use of the medication, and better health outcomes. They may also hold the key to company profits in an era of increasingly tough competition. Drugmakers believe giving patients and doctors the ability to check inhaler use in this way could be a big help in proving the value of their medicines to governments and insurers, though they need to tread carefully with data privacy.

The drug industry is about to take inhalers to the next level. GETTY IMAGES

GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Novartis are all chasing the opportunity via deals with device firms including U.S.-based Propeller Health and Australianlisted Adherium, as well as technology players like Qualcomm. Over the past half century, inhalers have revolutionized care by delivering medicines

directly into the lungs and avoiding the serious side effects seen with older oral drugs. But getting patients to take their medication correctly remains a challenge. “Technique is critical. You might have the world’s best blockbuster drug in an inhaler, but if patients don’t use it properly they won’t get the benefits,” said Omar Usmani, a consultant physician at Imperial College London. With asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affecting about 500 million people worldwide, the opportunity is large, and reducing serious attacks by improving adherence could save $19 billion a year in U.S. health-care costs alone, Goldman Sachs analysts estimated in a report last year. John Cho looks to the future The “Star Trek Beyond actor says it’s a great thing that Sulu is now gay. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

For John Cho, “Star Trek Beyond isn’t just another “Trek entry. A few weeks ago it was made public that his character, Hikaru Sulu, third officer and helmsman of the Starship Enterprise, would be revealed to be gay, with a

husband and an adopted daughter back home. In the film the revelation is a tiny moment, but while it’s made many happy, it’s enraged others, including the original Sulu himself, George Takei. For Cho, he sees it as a case in which a group that’s underrepresented in TV and film can finally see themselves onscreen. The original show was very casual in the way it presented an ethnically diverse Enterprise. And the way this introduces Sulu’s husband is casual, too.

The Holistic Center

I had concerns about that, about the way it would be handled. Now that I look at it, it really came together in the way I had hoped, which is in an almost off-handed throwaway scene. It was really important for me as a kid to see George [Takei] as an Asian-American guy when I watched the reruns of “Star Trek. I wasn’t really seeing myself onscreen. Seeing Sulu was a watershed moment for me; I was very encouraged by it. Similarly, I hope young queer folk will be encouraged by seeing themselves up there.

Movies and TV are still short on prominent Asian-American characters. There was even a meme called “Starring John Choâ€? that Photoshopped you into posters of movies starring white actors. Do you think Hollywood is ďŹ nally listening? I have mixed emotions when I talk about the degrees of progress. In the same breath that I will admit there has been progress, I’ll say it’s not nearly what it’s supposed to be. We’re still putting white actors in yellowface. There are markers of progress but also disturbing signs of recidivism. Comedian Hari Kondabolu fights for the disenfranchised, and has a killer Trump one-liner. ALISON GOLDBERG @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Hari Kondabolu is not a household name yet, but if you like politically charged comedy that tackles social and racial issues, there’s no one doing it better. Case in point: his upcoming project, “The Problem with Apu,” a documentary analyzing “The Simpsons” convenience store owner, coming this fall on TruTV. Until then, Kondabolu is ready to let his audience get to know the man behind the laughs. “You’ll get to know what I believe in through my stories, and not just my politics and my jokes,” the Indian-American comic says about his second standup album “Mainstream American Comic,” out July 22. We caught up with Kondabolu before he takes his act on the road. What’s the role of comedians in politics? For me, it’s important to hold truth to power, and comedy is a very accessible way to do that. People will be willing to listen because there’s a promise of a laugh. Is it hard to be funny given how toxic things have gotten? Comedy has always been my defense mechanism. So when things are bad I automatically go to, “What can I say to make it better?” With [Trump’s] particular campaign, you’ve seen people

protest and be really courageous in confronting things, and the folks in his rallies have been greeted with violence and racial slurs, and he condones those kinds of things. So you kind of worry with this presidency — are people going to be able to speak their mind? How have the campaigns inspired your comedy? This election, certainly, the big issues have really come out, whether those issues are about class, racism, xenophobia or sexism. That in some ways helps, because people become more attuned to thinking a little more deeply about society and what kind of society they want, and that helps me because that’s what I talk about. Any Trump-related material you can preview? I’ll give you one — the only time that Donald Trump has liberated women is when he’s

Are you trying to achieve anything specific with your comedy? If there’s an issue that involves justice, or people who are not getting justice, that’s where my interest is. So, whether we’re talking about undocumented immigrants, working class people getting cheated from a system that doesn’t work for them, sexism, racism and homophobia. These are all things that I gravitate towards, certainly from personal experience, discussing racism and issues about immigration because my parents are immigrants.

Hitting ‘Reset’ Kathleen Hanna’s the Julie Ruin is back at it. LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

Hello, Cleveland! Guess who’s in town? No, not The Donald: It’s the Kathleen — Hanna, that is, musician, activist and riot grrl founder. Hanna’s arrival doesn’t have anything to do with the Republican convention; it’s just another tour stop as her band, the Julie Ruin, promotes its second album, “Hit Reset. Hanna, however, isn’t up for an interview. It’s nothing personal, she’s eschewing press while on tour to conserve her voice and her health. The 47-year-old Bikini Kill and Le Tigre founder suffered the worst effects of latetreated Lyme disease and was out of action for a few years — her travails were documented in the 2013 film “The Punk Singer. Instead, in true demoA

While Mellman is neither transgender nor a crossdresser, he states, “It was just a time when all the punks and freaks hung out together, in San Francisco’s underground. You know, the ’90s. Oddly, it wasn’t punk that united the pair—it was country music. Then, she calls me and says my manager thinks we’ll never break into the Nashville scene. I still don’t think she had a manager at all. Obviously, Hanna’s

country-music career ended there. The Julie Ruin emerged with 2013’s “Run Fast, followed up with this month’s “Hit Reset, dancy, sharp punk rock, which carves into topics such as crippling illness, internet trolls and childhood trauma. “It was interesting, Mellman recalls of making the record. “Kath-

Best late night meal? My go-to would be the late night ramen at Uni. At that time of night, I love eating either spicy food or street food, and the ramen is a nice combo of the two. If I'm extra hungry, but want to keep it light, I'll toss in a fistful of nigiri. 370 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston,

Best meal under $5? This might go a little over budget, but I'd say Clover Food Lab’s cauliflower sandwich. It's all vegetarian but loaded with flavor, messy and delicious. If you really have to keep it under $5, I'd say the taquitos from 7-Eleven. Multiple locations, cloverfoodlab.com; 7-eleven.com

Pokemon Go, an augmented reality app that lets users find and catch Pokemon while moving around in the real world, surpassed Twitter in daily active users just six days after it was released. That's probably why when musician and Weymouth native Kerrin Connolly created a Facebook event to gather around 50 people for a Pokemon hunt in Boston Common, she received a few more RSVPs than she expected: According to the July 23 event’s page, almost 5,000 people have indicated they’re “going” and another 14,000 are “interested.” “It just blew right up,” Connolly says. “It’s been a crazy couple of days.” The huge influx of would-be trainers have somewhat complicated

The Harry Potter Put some magic in your summer.

For every Harry Potter fan, a trip to London is a dream come true, and there’s never been a better time with the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” premiering July 30. From the iconic Platform 9 ¾ to the lesser-known pedestrian streets, here are the top Harry Potter sites in London.

St. Paul’s Cathedral There are many reasons to visit Sir Christopher Wren’s beautiful English Baroque masterpiece, but for Potter fans one of the main points of interest will be the spectacular spiral geometric staircase (also known as the Dean’s Stair) in the cathedral’s southwest tower. Recognizable from “Prisoner of Azbakan,” this is where students trudge up the stone steps towards professor Trelawney’s divination classes held in a classroom atop a Hogwarts tower. It was also used in “Goblet of Fire” as the Turris Magnus staircase.

This beautifully preserved example of a Victorian covered market, noted for its ornate roof painted in green, maroon and cream over a cobblestone floor, portrayed Diagon Alley in “Sorcerer’s Stone.” An optician’s shop called The Glass Ball was used as the exterior of the Leaky Cauldron in the same film.

Lambeth Bridge The Knight Bus, a tripleheight purple version of the classic double-decker Routemaster, is both invisible to muggles and remarkably able to dodge obstacles as it rescues stranded members of the wizarding community at terrifying speeds. In “Prisoner of Azkaban,” Lambeth Bridge, located just west of the Houses of Parliament, is where the Knight Bus squeezes between two more conventional London buses

The Palace Theater, where “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is now playing.

as it transports Harry to the Leaky Cauldron. The bridge is painted red, to symbolize the crimson upholstery on the House of Lords’ benches (Westminster Bridge, to the east of Parliament, is painted green for the House of Commons).

Borough Market For “Prisoner of Azkaban,” the producers moved the entrance of the Leaky Cauldron to this location. The brickwork and door that can be seen when the Knight Bus drops Harry off has vanished. In real life, No. 9 is a flower shop with a slightly wider entrance. Besides the market, there are also stalls serving delicious street food.

Great Scotland Yard It was here that the rear entrance to the former headquarters of London’s Metropolitan Police was located, and “Scotland Yard” became shorthand for the institution. However, viewers of “Order of the Phoenix” will recognize it as the site of the visitor’s entrance to the Ministry of Magic, although the actual entrance was via a phone box located at the corner of Scotland Place. Scotland Place is still there (but not the phone box, which was only a prop) and in fact makes an

appearance in “Deathly Hallows Pt. 1” when Harry, Hermione and Ron disguise themselves as ministry employees.

London Zoo The somewhat larger London Zoo was used in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” as Little Whinging Zoo, where Harry first discovers he has magical powers when he strikes up a conversation with a boa constrictor. There’s a plaque by the tank that portrayed the talking snake’s residence.

St. Pancras Thanks to a drab 1970s extension, the exterior of King’s Cross station was deemed too unmagical, so it was impersonated in the film version of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by its next door neighbor, St. Pancras International, a Victorian neo-Gothic fantasia with wizardly turrets.

Charing Cross This major thoroughfare appears in several books: Harry walks down the street with Hagrid in “Sorcerer’s Stone,” he travels down it on a Knight Bus in “Prisoner of Azkaban,” and “HalfBlood Prince” mentions Ministry of Magic cars driving down Charing

tour of London Prince” where Harry is reading The Daily Prophet in the station’s cafe (in real life a waiting room) on Platform 1 when he spies Dumbeldore on Platform 3. It is from the bottom of the stairs on this platform that the headmaster whisks Harry out of the muggle world. The filmmakers may have been making a sly joke since Surbiton was immortalized in the classic British sitcom “The Good Life” as the epitome of a comfortable, conformist bedroom community.

Cross Road. It is here that the Leaky Cauldron wizards’ pub and inn, which serves as a gateway between the muggle world and Diagon Alley, is located.

King’s Cross Perhaps the best known Harry Potter location in London is Platform 9¾, located in King’s Cross, a decidedly muggle commuter station. You’ll recognize it by a luggage cart vanishing halfway into a brick wall under a helpful sign that says “Platform 9¾” on the concourse between the elevator and Platform 9.

Australia House A landmark since it opened in 1918, this imposing building on the Strand is home to Australia’s diplomatic mission in the UK. Its equally imposing exhibition room (which is not open to the public, though you may be able to poke your head in for a quick look) is so grand it required almost no set dressing when it appeared in “Sorcerer’s Stone” as the main hall of Gringott’s Wizarding Bank.

Piccadilly Circus A major London destination known for its nightlife and theaters, this is where Harry, Hermione and Ron apparate to in

“Deathly Hallows Pt. 1” while fleeing the Death Eaters after Bill and Fleur’s wedding. In the book version, they actually flee onto Tottenham Court Road Station, another major if less photogenic London hub, where the Luchino Caffe is located.

Millennium Bridge The newest of London’s bridges, this modernist steel pedestrianized crossing portrayed the Brockdale Bridge that was dramatically destroyed during a Death Eater attack in “HalfBlood Prince.” The real bridge provides a nice stroll between Tate Modern and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

This is the heart of official, ceremonial London. If you look back along Horse Guards Avenue towards Whitehall, you will see a statue of the eighth Duke of Devonshire. For the filming of “Deathly Hallows,” a “gentleman’s toilet” was erected in the area behind the statue, opposite the entrance to Britain’s Ministry of Defense. This, of course, was no ordinary toilet but the staff entrance to the Ministry of Magic.

Westminster Station This is where Mr. Weasley runs into difficulties using his ticket at the exit barrier en route to the Ministry of Magic with Harry in “Order of the Phoenix.” The station serves the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and several other main tourist attractions.

Cecil Court

Palace Theater

This charming pedestrianized street off Charing Cross Road is full of quirky Victorian-era shops specializing in rare books, maps and antiques. It is believed to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley and even has a shop that pre-dates the books called The Witch’s Ball.

The Victorian glass canopy of this West End theater dates back to 1891 and has been decorated with suitably witchy additions for the run of “Cursed Child.” Created by Jack Thorne in collaboration with J.K. Rowling, the play, which opens July 30, picks up the story of Harry, Hermione and Ron 19 years after the end of the last book. Demand for tickets is astronomical, but every Friday the show’s website releases 40 tickets in a special promotion called The Friday Forty.

Surbiton Station This quintessential 1930s art deco suburban station about 10 miles southwest of central London provided the location for the scene in “Half-Blood

Canine controller Now your pet pooch can choose what to watch on the box. DMITRY BELYAEV Metro World News letters@metro.us

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but UK pet food brand Wagg thinks otherwise with the development of a TV controller for canines. Researchers claim that British dogs watch up to nine hours of TV per week, making it not such a barking mad idea after all. The mat-like remote, designed by computer designers at the University of Central Lancashire and pet company Wagg, has three oversized dog-friendly buttons shaped like a bone, ball — and yes, a “paws button — so that pet pooches can switch the set on and off and change channels. Plus, to ensure that your mutt doesn’t make a meal of the device, it’s made of waterproof hard-wearing plastic. Wagg marketing manager Daniel Reeves

explains why the gadget could be a howling success. What inspired you to create a remote controller for dogs? Dogs are such an important part of family life, so why shouldn’t they get the chance to control the TV, just like everyone else does? We created the dog remote control to coincide with the launch of the oneoff show, “Dogglebox, which involves a cast made entirely of dogs.

What functions does it have? It allows dogs to control the TV when the family leaves the room. It is the next step in the growing trend of animal computer interaction (ACI), which has seen many pet-focused apps and interactive toys launch over the past few years. Do dogs need a TV control? We carried out research to suggest that British dogs watch on average of nine hours of TV per

week, with 91 percent of British dog owners saying that their dog regularly sits on the sofa and watches TV with them.

Will dogs understand how to use it? This is what the testing process is for — we are still gathering the research and feedback from dogs and their owners, although we worked with Ilyena HirskyjDouglas, researcher in animal computer interaction design at the University of Central Lancashire, to develop the prototype, who has helped us design the remote to be as dogfriendly as possible. What’s next? The model remote is currently being trialed with a specialist panel of pooches, with experts monitoring their reactions to the buttons, sounds and colors. Following the analysis stage, we will approach tech companies with a view to putting the model into mass production.

Grueling schedule not doing Red Sox any favors The Sox have few days off and tough road trips littering their upcoming slate.

the Red Sox will play 43 games in 44 days until Aug. 31, and in the middle of that will play in four ballparks in five days as they have a makeup game with Cleveland on Aug. 15, which was supposed to be an off-day. Also, starting July 28, 41 of the Red Sox’ final 63 games will be played on the road and 17 of their 39 games from July 28 to Sept. 7 will be played on the West Coast. Manager John Far-

Although the Red Sox are in decent shape in the standings as it relates to the postseason, the schedule makers didn’t do them any favors. Starting Monday,

rell feels the team is well equipped to handle the schedule with the number of young players the team has, as well as the recent acquisitions president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has made. “I think we’re looking forward to it,” Farrell said. “I think the depth of our bench is really going to be felt. regularity of importance, but his availability to us is going to come into play. … Again, we’re relatively in a good place physically from a health standpoint. How we balance that out with David [Ortiz] and others, I think we’re set up with a balanced roster to handle this set of games.” The Red Sox have performed quite well at home this season, as going into Monday they averaged 5.8 runs a game and were batting over .300 as a team.

AVENUE AUTO WHOLESALERS WE FINANCE

Given the few home games remaining, the team needs to take advantage of the ones they have now, which are winnable games: After they face the Giants they host the Diamondbacks over the weekend and the Tigers early next week. Boston was built around playing at Fenway Park with their lineup and it’s shown as they have won eight of their last 10 home games going into Monday. It’s important for the

Red Sox to go on a run and take advantage of their home games. The last thing they can afford is to need a long winning streak in September to reach the postseason. They would be asking a lot considering they only have 10 home games combined between September and October. So when it feels like the Red Sox aren’t at home much at the end of the season, it’s because they really aren’t.

The Patriots get Tom Brady back in Week 5, when they face off against the (likely to be lowly) Cleveland Browns.

GETTY IMAGES

SORRY CLEVELAND, BRADY’S SEASON OF REVENGE STARTS WITH YOU DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard

I just feel bad for the Cleveland Browns. They’ll host the New England Patriots in Week 5, Sunday Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. on CBS. It will also be Tom Brady’s first game of the season, thanks to the four-game Deflategate suspension that he accepted last week. The Browns will feel Brady’s wrath, for sure, as he begins his own personal warpath through the NFL. All for the ultimate goal: to make sure Roger Goodell is handing him the Lombardi Trophy in Houston on Feb. 5. Look, it’s way too early for NFL season predictions, never mind playoff and Super Bowl predictions. But will there ever be anyone more motivated than Brady will be this season, beginning Week 5

in Cleveland? The Patriots already use bulletin-board material better than anyone else in the history of sports. The fact that one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time has to sit out four games because of the air pressure in a football is infuriating. And I’m not even on the team. So, you can only imagine how Brady is feeling. Let’s make something clear: One emotion he is not feeling is guilt. The idea that his acceptance of the fourgame Deflategate suspension is an “admission of guilt” is downright laughable. Had Brady been admitting any type of guilt, he would have rolled over after the initial suspension was handed out. But he didn’t, and last time I checked, he actually won his appeal, and

Judge Richard Berman vacated his suspension. Then, when the NFL won its appeal and had his suspension reinstated, Brady was denied a request for a rehearing. So there’s really only one legal option left, and that’s to try and take the case to the Supreme Court. According to the latest reports, Brady has authorized the NFLPA to try and do just that. Except, Brady himself won’t be involved. But by no means is that an admission of guilt. Do you really think that if Brady’s All-Star team of lawyers told him he had a chance to win and get the suspension vacated again once and for all, he would just fold up shop and say, “Nah, that’s OK guys. This isn’t a battle worth fighting anymore.” I mean, if you

believe that, you just haven’t been paying attention. It’s clear that Brady’s people have told him this thing was all but done, and that the NFL — as unfair as it is — is going to win the fight to protect the commissioner’s rights in the CBA. And unfortunately, Article 46 is a real thing. The ability to be the judge, jury and executioner is a power that Goodell actually has. And as pathetic as it may be, he’s utilized those powers to the best of his ability in this situation, one that revolves around the air pressure in footballs. Brady’s only real option was to move on to the 2016 season. By doing so, he hands the car keys to Jimmy Garoppolo for the first four weeks of the regular season. The schedule? Week 1 in Arizona,

Week 2 at home against Miami, Week 3 at home against Houston, and Week 4 at home against Buffalo. That’s right, only one road game for the Patriots’ backup quarterback. The only thing that we know for sure is that Brady will be playing Week 5 in Cleveland. He won’t be performing with a guilty conscience. He won’t be needing air-pressure adjustments with the footballs. He’ll just be out there slinging, as a quarterback who’s been dragged through the mud for something so stupid, not even Greg Hardy can comprehend how he and Brady served the same number of games. Brady isn’t guilty. He’s on a mission. And that mission begins in Week 5. I’m just not sure what the Browns did to deserve that.
