FBI INVESTIGATES HACKING OF DEMOCRATIC PARTY ORGANIZATION
1
The FBI is investigating the nature and scope of a cyber intrusion at the Democratic National Committee, the agency said, amid concerns hackers working for Russia are attempting to use the breach to influence the U.S. presidential election. “A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace,” the FBI said in a statement. Emails among DNC employees were released by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks over the weekend appearing to expose favoritism for presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over her chief rival in the primary, Bernie Sanders. TURKEY DETAINS 42 JOURNALISTS AS EUROPE SOUNDS ALARM
2
Turkey ordered the detention of 42 journalists, broadcaster NTV reported, under a crackdown following a failed coup that has targeted more than 60,000 people, drawing fire from the European Union. The arrests or suspensions of soldiers, police, judges and civil servants in response to the July 15-16 putsch have raised concerns among rights groups and Western countries, who fear President Tayyip Erdogan is capitalizing on it to tighten his grip on power. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker questioned Ankara’s long-standing aspiration to join the EU. “I believe that Turkey, in its current state, is not in a position to become a member any time soon and not even over a longer period,” Juncker said on French television France 2. Seafood joint accused of serving sushi with a side of sexism in its ads Legal Sea Foods CEO defends calling Hillary Clinton a “cold fish” as a pun. CHRIS CAESAR @MetroBOS
chris.caesar@metro.us
Legal Sea Foods found itself in hot water Monday after some readers said they were offended by a full-page Boston Globe ad that called Hillary Clinton a “cold fish,” all in the service of a sushi pun. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a “cold fish” as “an emotionless person,” though many readers may also be familiar with the phrase’s top definition on Urban Dictionary.com: “A sex partner who is either not receptive, or not providing any emotional or physical feedback during copulation.” The ad was part of a campaign featuring the company’s long-time CEO Roger Berkowitz as a faux presidential candidate, and jokingly employs much of the empty sloganeering familiar to those who follow politics and advertising. Think puns like “my first act in office will be to legalize sea weed,” and “I support the gay community: That’s why we serve rainbow trout.” “In an election year in which political correctness has been thrown out the window, these ads do the same,” a March press release announcing the campaign read. Reached at his office Monday, Berkowitz said Monday that he had an “interesting” day listening to feedback about the ad, later adding he thought it was “nuts!” that people read misogynistic or sexist overtones in the ad. The ad copy was a comment “about [Clinton] not exactly be-

“Good advertising doesn’t blend,” Berkowitz agreed. It’s too early to say whether the company got that kind of return on its investment, but if their Facebook page is any indication, many customers seem to have crossed that line from “oh that’s cool” to outright offense. “I prefer my dinner without a side of misogyny,” one commenter wrote. “Thanks but no thanks.” “I suppose we should be grateful that they’re letting us know where not to eat,” another person replied. “I plan work events at Legal all the time (in MA and DC),” another said. “Definitely going to stop that now that I’ve seen your Hillary Clinton/cold fish/Berkowitz ad. How disgusting and inappropriate.” The Boston-based chain operates more than 30 restaurants along the East Coast.

Berkowitz did acknowledge that the term, while used to describe both men and women, can also have another meaning. “It wasn’t to make fun of a woman per se,” he said. “If it were [a term] that just referred to as women, I wouldn’t have used it. ‘Cold fish’ refers to people without a per-

AG: Gun sellers have gotten the message Threat of crackdown on “copycat” assault weapons has had desired effect without having to issue citations, says Attorney General Maura Healey. JOEL MILLMAN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Gun sellers have gotten the message that so-called copycat assault weapons won’t be tolerated in Massachusetts, state Attorney General Maura Healey said Monday. Speaking to reporters at the Philadelphia hotel where the Massachusetts delegates to the Democratic National Convention are staying, Healey said a spike in sales following last week’s announcement that enforcement of the state’s ban on assault-style weapons would be stepped up has since subsided.
Activists rally against the attorney general’s action, calling her actions unilateral and an over-reach, and compared her to historic dictators. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
“The action we took was about closing the loophole, making clear that people understood the law, and making clear that people understood that we were going to enforce the law,” Healey said, according to State House News Service. “The good news is that while sales were up the day of the announcement, sales
continued to drop precipitously over the next few days. “We continue to monitor sales, but I think what’s clear is that gun dealers, gun manufacturers, have gotten the message that this subset of weapons cannot be available under existing law. I’m not creating new law. This is under
existing law.” Hundreds of gun rights activists and Republican lawmakers rallied on Beacon Hill Saturday, protesting Healey’s new gun control efforts. During the rally, the protesters wore T-shirts and held signs comparing Healey to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. Jim Wallace, execu-
tive director of the Gun Owners Action League of Massachusetts, which organized the protest, said lawmakers have had a chance to add guns to the assault weapons ban. “These laws were passed in 1998, they were redone in 2004, then they were reviewed in 2014, so the Legislature is already fine with what is going
on,” Wallace was quoted by State House News Service. “What other reason would a person unilaterally decide, ‘I’m going to change the rules overnight’?” Asked about enforcement actions and whether anyone had been cited since the crackdown, Healey said, “Not yet,” State House reported.

On a day when Bernie Sanders’ supporters took to the streets, and delegates booed the populist candidate after he urged them to vote for Hillary Clinton, party unity looked tenuous as the Democratic National Convention began Monday in Philadelphia. Fractures between Clinton and Sanders supporters have grown more divisive in the wake of leaked emails that showed Democratic party members were working to undermine Sanders’ primary election campaign. But for many delegates, these battle lines among Democrats are only giving Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump an easy win come November. State Representative Ruth Balser, a Newtown resident, said she’s bound to Clinton “for life,” but sees the necessity in repairing party rifts. “[Clinton is] the most qualified candidate for president we’ve ever had in the history of the United States as far as I’m concerned,” Balser said. She added: “It’s very important and great that Sen. Sanders is encour-

aging his supporters to support Hillary Clinton because we need a unified Democratic party. The difference between us and the Republicans is so huge at this point. “Our party is really inclusive, supports diversity, wants all of our American values of equality and freedom, and the other guys aren’t there,” she said. Delegate Bruce Taub echoed Balser’s criticism. “That notion, that kind of, ‘we’re going to
return to the past for our greatness’ is an appeal to white racism in my opinion,” Taub said, referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan. “It’s not sympathetic to the diversity of our national origins and interests.” But on Clinton’s expected nomination, Taub, an Orleans resident and elected delegate bound to Sanders, said he’s “as happy as a disappointed person can be.” “I’m inspired by Ber-
nie,” he said. “I’m not inspired by Hillary. So I’m interested in Bernie’s hope that we can transform our nation. Bernie represents change. Hillary doesn’t represent change, and Trump represents change in the wrong direction.” “Three years ago, [Clinton] was the most respected woman politician on the planet,” he said. “Three years later, only her supporters believe her. She’s not telling the truth and everybody knows it. If you don’t have integrity, nobody wants to vote for you.” The environmental lawyer was among those booing the Vermont senator Monday afternoon, a moment he described as “visceral.” “It was a very emotional moment, and it felt like he was…,” Taub said, his voice trailing. “What’s the truth: Is he delivering the party line because he horse-traded platform stuff, or is he really scared to death of Trump?” Taub said his goal — to get Sanders the nomination — has failed, but now he plans to use the DNC to try to build momentum behind the Sanders movement, and to get more progressive candidates elected to executive and legislative branches. When asked if he plans to vote for Clinton, assuming she’s the nominee, Taub said he doesn’t need to make that decision now. “The odds are, inevitably, that I will.”

DNC protesters keep up pressure on Democrats to take a turn to the left Philadelphia City Hall was besieged by Sanders backers, others demanding poverty, marijuana and immigration reforms. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
Crowds of protesters swarmed City Hall most of Monday, marching in waves down Broad Street to make their voices heard as the Democratic National Convention got underway. Many of the protesters were Bernie Sanders supporters, their anger roiled by Sanders urging them earlier in the day to vote for Hillary Clinton. “We’re not automatons, we don’t do what Bernie Sanders says, we
do what we believe,” said Michael Parks, a Bernie Sanders supporter from Indianapolis. “She [Clinton] didn’t win in a democratic way, she didn’t win anything, and if they appoint her, we will show them exactly what democracy is by leaving their party and voting for [Green Party presidential candidate] Jill Stein.” Parks said he believes Donald Trump will win the election. “I am convinced that Donald Trump will win,” he said. “I do not like Donald Trump, [but] he is a four-year disaster. Hillary Clinton is an eight-year disaster. … If Donald Trump would become president, it would increase activism in the country.” The protesters representing various left-wing causes are continuing to push a progressive agenda at the outset of a conven-

tion that Clinton and even Sanders are hoping will bind rather than divide Democrats for the coming campaign against Republican nominee Donald Trump. But leaked emails that show top DNC officials privately opposed Sanders’ presidential campaign during the primary season are only continuing to inflame Sanders’ supporters.
EXPERIENCE & RESULTS WORKERS’ THAT COUNT COMPENSATION
“It’s a confirmation of things that Bernie people have known all along,” said Luanne Inn, 43, of Virginia, “that this election has not been fair, that there have been a lot of things going on through the media and the DNC that have benefited Hillary to his disadvantage and affected the election results … I would like for Hillary Clinton to step down.
I think it would be the honorable thing to do.” But others weren’t as confident about the risk that continuing to support Sanders over Clinton as the election race draws near. “I honestly think we’re risking it so hard right now, with a Trump presidency,” said Dylan Ramos, 20, of Hawaii. “If I lived in a swing state, I would probably be voting Hillary. But because Hawaii is such a strong blue state, I feel OK voting for Jill Stein.” Protesters ranged from supporters of Stein, to promarijuana legalization activists, anti-poverty activists with Cheri Honkala’s Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign and anti-deportation activists. Mingling with the Sanders supporters were several hundred “jay-
walkers,” organized by the group that promoted legalizing marijuana in Washington, D.C., last year. They marched carrying flags and signs showing Benjamin Franklin smoking a joint. City Councilman Derek Green, stepping out of City Hall into the chaos of hundreds of protesters, said he enjoyed the displays of the First Amendment right of free speech. “Where else would you want to have it than in the birthplace of our country?” he asked. After protesters marched down Broad Street to the Wells Fargo Center, dozens staged a sit-in outside as the convention kicked off Monday afternoon. At least a dozen were arrested for nonviolently trying to enter the convention. Additional reporting by Alexis Sachdev and A.D. Amorosi

Margot Robbie addresses that awkward Vanity Fair profile What happens when Vanity Fair publishes a profile on Margot Robbie calling her a “throwback” because she’s Australian and that’s the place for throwback people? Twitter explodes. Fellow Aussies came to Robbie’s defense accusing the writer of the article, Rich Cohen, of overt sexism and quite possibly the weirdest characterization of Australia. The “Suicide Squad” star addressed the article while on an Australian talk show hosted by Carrie Bickmore, calling the story’s tone “really weird.” And on Cohen’s method, Robbie added, “I remember thinking, ‘That was a really odd interview; I don’t know how that’s going to come out.’” In the profile, Cohen

described Robbie as “beautiful in a minor knock-around key, a blue mood, and a slow dance,” also noting that “she is blonde but dark at the roots. She is tall but only with the help of certain shoes.” Robbie, a veteran of being sexualized in the media, responded to the
comments, “I’ve read far more offensive, far more sexist, insulting, derogatory, disgusting things on a daily basis,” she admitted. “Maybe I’m desensitized to it now.” Although the story caused quite the stir, Robbie was extremely grateful for the support, “I had like this bit of Aussie pride, where I was like, ‘Don’t mess with the Aussies,’” she said. “Don’t you mess with the Aussies. Look at what happens when you mess with Australia.”

Rihanna doesn’t want you to catch ’em all There are many social media checkin obligations when you attend one of this summer’s biggest tours: Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook Live, Twitter, etc. But there’s a new lowest one on the list. No, not FourSquare. It’s Pokemon Go. Rihanna knows this. And she’s calling out fans who are playing the game at her shows. “I don’t want to see you texting your boyfriends or your girlfriends,” she told the crowd in Lille, France, on her ANTI tour. ”I don’t want to see you catching any Pokemons up in this b—h.” The “Sledgehammer” songstress was recently cast in Janet Leigh’s iconic “Psycho” role on the final season of A&E’s “Bates Motel,” and to be fair, she might have a point. If you want to combine one of the hottest tickets of the year while expanding your Pokedex, just head to Central Park, where you might find human Psyduck, Justin Bieber, instead.
Andy Dick is sober, and that’s awesome Usher, Josh Groban and more are fed up with politicians using their songs Here’s something genuinely nice in a relentlessly awful year: Andy Dick is sober! Like, for reals sober. Like, promoting-arecovery-center-for-free sober. The actor, known for “NewsRadio” but also for spending most of his career getting arrested for his alcoholand drug-fueled antics, has been clean for 18 months. He credits his outpatient treatment at the center SOBA for his success, and he’s so thrilled that he’s now an unofficial employee, appearing pro bono on advertisements for the center. It’s at this point that we’re supposed to get all skeptical and laugh
at the celebrity who used to not keep it together and may fall off the wagon and do crazy things. We’re supposed to remember we still have Lindsay Lohan to kick around. But we’re not doing that. Thanks in part to “BoJack Horseman” — the cartoon about a famous talking horse with substance abuse problems, whose gutting third season is up for binge-watching on Netflix — we’re deeply empathetic to tabloid fixtures who fight hard to be happy. So, good on you, Andy Dick!
On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” musicians aired their grievances about politicos using their tunes without permission — in song, of course. Oliver pointed to Donald Trump’s unauthorized use of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” as his entrance music to last week’s Republican National Convention. “So it’s with a heavy heart that I announce: Freddie Mercury, dead again at age 69,” Oliver cracked. (Mercury, Queen’s lead singer, died in 1991.) This was hardly the first time a politician has pinched a song. Ronald Reagan infamously stole
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” in 1984—and he didn’t even bother to listen to the lyrics, which are about the Vietnam War. So Oliver gathered a slew of artists to send pols a message they can’t misinterpret. Usher, Heart, Josh Groban, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper and others appeared in a video for “Don’t Use Our Song,” which included lyrics like: “By the time this tune is through/You’ll be lucky if we don’t sue.” Song stealing is a nonpartisan issue, so we’ll see if the Dems strike a sour note with any musicians this week.

So we’ve nearly hit a midway point in our summer itinerary, and for some this may be alarming. “But I never saw the ocean! you might say. Well, don’t fret; we have ideas for cramming in all that summer goodness into a long weekend, or the middle of the week‚ or whenever you have time. Relax! It’s (still) summer.

Mid-summer checklist
1
Go see Shakespeare on the Common
There are a few good reasons for this, the first being: It’s free. (There’s a suggested donation, and a fee if you’d like to rent a chair.) Second: This year’s show is “Love’s Labour’s Lost, a comedy (yay!) that doesn’t end in marriage, which is rare (modern!). The story was rewritten for contemporary times and adapted for the silver screen by Kenneth Branagh, starring Alicia Silverstone and Emily Mortimer in 2000, but this is much more satisfying. Pull up a piece of lawn, pack a bag of picnic snacks and enjoy this early Shakespear-

Head out to the islands
Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are grand but, let’s be honest, near impossible to take in on a day trip. Hop a ferry from Long Wharf North for $17 (students and seniors for $12) and travel to the seven stops within this surprisingly close oasis. You can go for a dip at
Spectacle Island (lifeguarded) or Lovells Island (unsupervised), or get in a day of hiking at Peddocks Island or World’s End — which is technically a peninsula, but no one’s counting. Come back for free tunes from Boston-area ensembles and Berklee students on weekend afternoons.

Dine al fresco

Stay fit on summer vacation Everyone likes to lounge on the beach, but getting in a few workouts during downtime won’t hurt. HAYLEY GREASON @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
If you’re running away from your stress this summer vacation, fitness enthusiast Brian Ripka says you might as well run to stay fit while you’re at it. The 47-year-old recently founded Ripped, a SoulCycle for runners that specializes in a high-intensity workout combining time on the treadmill with bootcamp routines. It’s set to open in NYC this fall. But what should people do to stay fit when
they don’t have access to a gym or their favorite fitness class? We spoke with Ripka, who happens to be son of celebrity jeweler Judith Ripka, to get his summer-holiday exercise recommendations.

What are some exercises people can do to stay ďŹ t on vacation? When I travel I’m always looking for a golf course to run on. If you just go the length of the golf course, you’ve got a good run in. So if you’re in the Hamptons or at other summer destinations, you’re probably near a trail path or a beach — those are all great places to run. In the hotel room I do something called
MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY and it doesn’t take more than 20-25 minutes.Â
You do three sets of it, then go out and hit the beach. 10x10x10. First, jog in place for 30 seconds to warm up the body and the mind. Then count to yourself through 30, and when you get to 30, you say, “Let’s go! You do 10 jumping jacks, then get into pushup position, take a deep inhale and exhale, and do 10 pushups. Next you hold, inhale and exhale, and do 10 mountain climbers. After you do 10x10x10, pop up and do that three times and that’s one set.

Why are these good exercises to do while on vacation? I used to travel 100-plus days a year for my job, so between work and vacation I spent half the year away from my gym. I needed to figure out a way to get a full workout in without any access to gym equipment. The 10x10x10 workout is great because it really gets your heart rate up. You get in a good sweat
Why are trails and beaches the best place to run? When I travel, I don’t run on road anymore. I think it’s too tough on the body — the knees, the joints, the back — so an easy one is to run on the beach. The golf course and trails are also soft on the body. The impact of running on concrete rattles the joints. ‌ It’s runner’s suicide, really. At some point, it will catch up to
you, and it caught up to me, so I found running on soft ground is perfect.  What’s a ďŹ tness tip that everyone should live by? Most important is consistency and staying power. So many people seem to lack the ability to stay. They let one bad day turn into two or three, and they end up forgetting what they aspired to do in the first place. That’s really where I see the fallout. It’s OK to take a day off, it’s not the end of the world, but you’ve gotta get back to work.

Hughes ready to tackle the competition in Rio The U.S. rugby star spent plenty of days honing his craft in New England. JASON DEVANEY @Jason_Devaney1 sports@metro.us
Madison Hughes’ upbringing included flights across the pond between his family’s home in England and his relatives’ homes in New England every summer. Then there were four years spent at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and now he’s in Southern California — a long way from the dreary England weather and the snowy New England winters. “I spent every summer with my family visiting relatives, and we would stay at my grandma’s house in Lancaster, Massachusetts,” Hughes said. The one thing that’s tied everything together for him is rugby. Hughes
has been playing the sport, best known in parts of the world other than North America, since he was 7. In a few weeks, Hughes will be at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to compete for the U.S. rugby sevens team. This year marks the Olympic debut for rugby sevens, and it’s been 92 years since rugby was last contested at the Olympics. “It’s an incredible honor to represent my country in the Olympics, but it’s also a responsibility as we want to go out there and perform well and make our country proud,” said Hughes, whose father is English and whose mother is a Leominster native and a Boston College graduate. Those Massachusetts roots turned him into a fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. Hughes was a standout rugby player at Dartmouth College, where he was the first junior to serve as a team captain. Upon graduation last

summer, Hughes packed his bags and moved to California and the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego. Hughes has been a member and captain of the USA Eagles Sevens team since 2014. His numbers speak for them-
selves: — His 725 points in 23 tournaments are the most of any player in U.S. rugby history. — He scored the most points of any player in the world (331) during the 2015-16 season. — His efforts helped the Eagles win the Lon-
don tournament on the 2015 Sevens World Series, the first U.S. victory on the rugby sevens circuit. Rugby has a relatively small fanbase in the U.S., and it’s likely that many U.S. sports fans don’t know what rugby sevens is. The two main points
are that each team has seven players on the field at a time, which makes for an open and fastpaced game. A match consists of two seven-minute halves. This is different from the rugby many U.S. fans know about, which features 15 players a side, longer matches and bigger players. “The ball is gonna fly around, players will be running all over the place and it’ll all be over before you can process all the action,” Hughes said. For Hughes, the prospect of playing in the Olympics is multipronged. For one, it’s every athlete’s dream to be in the position to win an Olympic medal. Secondly, the Rio Games will expose Americans to something they might never have seen before. “I’m so excited for the Olympics, and it’s amazing to have rugby sevens joining,” he said. “The Olympics really has the potential to take our sport to new heights, especially in the U.S.”

Indians (56-41)
The Giants have struggled lately, dropping seven of their last 10 to now lead the Dodgers by three games in the NL West. Pitching has been an issue over the last week.
Though the Indians have lost three straight games, they still hold a six-game lead in the AL Central. They likely will be active in the trade market as they look to add a bat.

Orioles (57-40)
Dodgers (56-44)
Led by their offense, the Orioles are the best team in the American League. Mark Trumbo has led the powerful offense and Chris Tillman has led the rotation.
Looking to take advantage of the struggling Giants, the Dodgers have won seven of their last 10 games to now only trail them by three games in the division.

Nats (58-41)
Rangers (57-42)
Red Sox (55-41)
Washington remains on top in the NL East, being led by Daniel Murphy. He continues to lead the NL in batting with a .355 BA, and also has 73 RBIs, tied for third in the NL.
Texas is the second-best team in the AL at the moment and it looks like it will push hard to add another starting pitcher before the trade deadline Monday.
The Sox’s offense has led them to own second place in the AL East. The biggest thing moving forward is finally getting David Price on track.
