SUICIDE BOMBER KILLS AT LEAST 70 AT PAKISTAN HOSPITAL
1
A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed at least 70 people and wounded more than 100 on Monday in an attack on mourners gathered at a hospital in Quetta, according to officials in the southwestern province of Baluchistan. The bomber struck as a crowd of mostly lawyers and journalists crammed into the emergency department to accompany the body of a prominent lawyer who had been shot and killed in the city earlier in the day, Faridullah, a reporter who was among the wounded, told Reuters. Abdul Rehman Miankhel, a senior official at the government-run Civil Hospital, where the explosion occurred, told reporters that at least 70 people had been killed, with more than 112 wounded, as the casualty toll spiked from initial estimates. LAWMAKER’S YOUNG SON DIES IN ACCIDENT AT KANSAS WATER PARK

The young son of a Kansas lawmaker died at a popular water park in Kansas City on Sunday in an apparent accident on what has been dubbed the world’s tallest water slide, officials and media said. Rep. Scott Schwab confirmed in a statement to media that his son, Caleb Thomas Schwab, had died in the accident at Schlitterbahn water park in Kansas on Sunday afternoon. “As we try and mend our home with him no longer with us, we are comforted knowing he believed in his savior, Jesus, and they are forever together now. We will see him another day,” Schwab said in a statement. Schlitterbahn spokeswoman Winter Prosapio said the child died while riding the Verruckt water slide, which is the world’s tallest water slide, according to Guinness World Records, at more than 168 feet tall. MUDSLIDES TRIGGERED BY STORM CLAIM 40 LIVES IN EASTERN MEXICO

Mudslides triggered by intense rainfall in eastern Mexico killed 40 people as saturated hillsides collapsed onto modest homes in the wake of now-dissipated Tropical Storm Earl. The death toll rose after state governors in the two most affected states confirmed two more deaths from a series of mudslides that struck hillside communities. The head of national emergency services previously put the death toll at 38, the vast majority of whom were found in Puebla state, while the remainder died in neighboring Veracruz. Rafael Morena Valle, governor of Puebla state, said canine units were searching for the missing, but the number of unaccounted for residents was unclear. REUTERS

In cities with a reputation as innovation hubs for their tech and entrepreneurial leadership, such as Boston, real estate prices are soaring and available housing is dwindling. But often new, affordable housing is restricted by local ordinances or neighborhood opposition. Enter YIMBY — Yes In My Backyard — to champion the cause that gentrification doesn’t have to be a steamroller. Unlike the more familiar NIMBY, or Not In My Backyard, YIMBYs encourage affordable development of low-cost housing in their neighborhoods. They can be found in exorbitantly expensive San Francisco; Boulder, Colorado, which hosted a national YIMBY conference this year and

Their pro-development stance leads some to wonder whether they might be in the pocket of realestate developers looking to lend their projects more credibility. Though ABC currently supports the Mass & Main development in Central Square, Kanson-Benanav says his group has no affiliation with any developer. Meanwhile, KansonBenanav is thinking regionally, too; he wants to link up with other local YIMBY groups, like Walk Up Roslindale and Villages Newton. “It has to fall on every community in the region to pay their fair share,” he said. “We plan to make this a regional, if not a statewide, movement.”

Officer Eddie B. Odney, a nine-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, is expected to plead guilty to access device fraud at a federal hearing Monday. The 38-year-old can avoid prison time if the judge accepts his plea and the officer permanently resigns from the force, the Boston Herald reported. Odney allegedly bought $5,000 worth of department-store gift
cards from a member of a shoplifting ring, according to the Boston Globe. Authorities contend Odney knew the cards were obtained illegally. He made over $1,600 in purchases at various department stores with the cards last year, according to legal filings. The officer was placed on administrative leave in February, the Globe reported at the time.
The plea deal he struck with U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office includes one year of probation in lieu of a prison sentence as long as Odney resigns from the Boston police and gives up any chance of reinstatement. U.S. District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf is not tied to that agreement, the Boston Herald reported, and Odney could face up to 10 years in prison.

Police: Google manager from NYC killed in Massachusetts woods
A SALUTE TO SHORTS Mayor Walsh defends cargo shorts, saying they’re ‘most comfortable things ever’ Last week, a debate about cargo shorts divided the nation. Now, Mayor Marty Walsh has weighed in. Walsh took to Twitter Monday to add his two cents to the controversial topic, along with a picture of himself decked out in the highly disputed fashion choice. The internet ire started after Nicole Hong of the Wall Street Journal wrote an article titled, “Nice cargo shorts! You’re sleeping on the sofa.” Hong’s story opens with a man who was down to only one pair of cargo shorts because his wife threw away his other pairs. Later on, she features a woman who, Hong writes, “doesn’t like the idea of being seen in public with her husband when he’s wearing cargo shorts, which make him look like a ‘misshapen lump.’” Hong’s piece sparked altercations all across the web between those who oppose the manypocketed men’s clothing item and those who consider cargo shorts a summer staple. Walsh found himself in the middle of that argument after he

They are the most comfortable things ever,” Walsh wrote on Twitter. Some people agreed with Walsh, like his Chief of Staff Dan Koh, who tweeted “Preach, Boss!” Others showed that they were with Walsh by tweeting pictures of their own cargo shorts. But not everyone felt the same way. “If you can’t imagine George Clooney, Cary Grant or Don Draper wearing it, please don’t put it on. Regards, Women Everywhere,” one woman tweeted. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

A disenchanted Republican, fearing Trump, launches third-party run There is virtually no chance that the newly announced candidate, Evan McMullin, could win and only a slight chance he will even be able to get his name on the ballots of key states. A former CIA officer and congressional staffer on Monday launched a long-shot bid for president, a Republican billing himself as a conservative alternative to Donald Trump who disenchanted voters can rally around. Evan McMullin has no name recognition across the country and was not even well known in the Capitol where until Monday he was the chief policy director for the organizational body of all Republicans in the House of Representatives. But that will not stop some conservatives from pitching him as an option in the Nov. 8 election for those who never warmed to Trump and remain adamantly opposed to Democrat Hillary Clinton. “Donald Trump appeals to the worst fears of Americans at a time

we need unity, not division,” McMullin wrote in a letter announcing his candidacy. “With the stakes so high for our nation and at this late stage in the process, I can no longer stand on the sidelines.” McMullin’s campaign was first reported by MSNBC and BuzzFeed. He could not be immediately reached for comment. Trump was formally anointed his party’s nominee last month after beating 16 rivals in the state-by-state primary contests. But many Republicans have been concerned about Trump’s policies, such as his proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country and his free-wheeling, often insulting, rhetoric. McMullin has never held public office. In addition to lacking a quick source of campaign cash,
he will face immediate hurdles to try to get his name on enough ballot papers to make himself a serious candidate. Texas, for example, requires third-party candidates to get more than 79,000 signatures from residents who did not vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary. And the deadline for that was in early May. Deadlines to get on the ballots have also lapsed for North Carolina, Illinois and Florida, all large states that also could be pivotal in the election. The best McMullin could likely hope for would be to simply play spoiler to Trump in a handful of states, eating away at the New York real estate developer’s ability to win states that are generally reliably Republican. party, and rival Democrat Hillary Clinton surged ahead in opinion polls with three months to go until the Nov. 8 election. Trump followed prepared remarks rather than using the free-wheeling style at rallies that has often produced controversial comments. He also kept his cool as some 14 protesters jumped to their feet and shouted at him at intervals as he spoke at the Detroit Economic Club. Most of the interruptions were at one- or two-minute intervals, giving the appearance of a coordinated effort to rattle
him. He was also cheered repeatedly by the crowd. Trump’s remarks appeared targeted at both an affluent business community and working people, in particular those who have suffered from a decline in U.S. manufacturing in cities such as Detroit. He said his plan would include imposing a temporary moratorium on new federal regulations, reducing rates for income and corporate taxes, and establishing new provisions for working parents dealing with child-care costs. BRIEF Trump seeks a campaign reset with economic speech in Detroit Republican Donald Trump sought to regain momentum for his White House campaign on Monday by proposing sweeping tax breaks, cuts to federal regulations and a revival of the stalled Keystone XL oil pipeline project. Study: Social costs of Flint, Michigan, water crisis total $395M The study calculated the lifetime economic losses expected to be suffered for every exposed child. The U.S. lead health standard has been lowered repeatedly since the 1960s, but according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no safe level has been identified. The social costs stemming from dangerous levels of lead in the drinking water of Flint, Michigan, such as the effect on children’s health, amount to $395 million, according to an analysis by a professor at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The total takes into account some 8,000 chil-
dren believed exposed to lead poisoning in Flint since April 2014, when the financially struggling city, under the control of a stateappointed emergency manager, switched its water source from Detroit’s municipal system to the Flint River to save money. The river water was more corrosive than the Detroit system’s and caused more lead to leach from Flint’s aging pipes. Lead can be toxic and children are especially vulnerable. The city switched back last October. The crisis has prompted lawsuits by parents in Flint, which has a population of about 100,000, who say their children have shown dangerously high levels of lead in their blood. “We should never ignore the human costs of lead poisoning,” study author Peter Muennig,
an associate professor at the university, said in a statement released with his analysis, published in a letter to the journal Health Affairs. “Even relatively low levels of exposure may rob children of IQ points and predispose them to violent behavior later in life,” Muennig said. Overall societal costs of all low-level lead exposures in the United States — measured as lost economic productivity, welfare use and criminal justice system costs — was over $4.5 billion last year, according to the study. In July, six state employees in Michigan were criminally charged in connection with the case. Some critics have called for high-ranking state officials, including Gov. Rick Snyder, to be charged. Snyder said in April he believed he had not done anything criminally wrong. REUTERS

Delta Air Lines Inc. canceled hundreds of flights and delayed many others on Monday after an outage hit its computer systems, grounding planes and stranding passengers of one of the world’s largest carriers at airports around the globe. Atlanta-based Delta, the second-largest U.S. airline by passenger traffic, said it had canceled 451 flights after a power outage that began around 2:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time in Atlanta. Flights gradually resumed about six hours later. The disruption could deal a blow to the reputation of Delta, which for months canceled far fewer flights than rivals and boasted of its successes to corporate and leisure customers to win their loyalty.

Delta said it was investigating the cause of the “systemwide outage.” As of 1:30 p.m., it was operating about 1,679 of its nearly 6,000 scheduled flights. The problems arose after a switchgear, which helps control and switch power flows like a circuit breaker in a home, malfunctioned
for reasons that were not immediately clear, said Georgia Power spokesman John Kraft. The utility, which provides electricity to most counties in Georgia, earlier sent a team to investigate, Kraft said. The problem has not affected other Georgia Power customers, he said. The carrier was probably running a routine test of its backup power supplies when the switchgear failed and locked Delta out of its reserve generators as well as from Georgia Power, industry analyst and former airline executive Robert Mann said. That would result in a shutdown of Delta’s data center, which controls bookings, flight operations and other critical systems, he said. REUTERS

Seth Rogen settles the Bloom vs. Bieber debate Could it be? Another Orlando Bloom versus Justin Bieber battle? Except this time, it’s the battle of the sausages, and “Sausage Party” star/ expert Seth Rogen, carefully compared the two. That’s right, last week Katy Perry’s boyfriend’s junk was in full bloom on their romantic getaway to Hawaii. But his arch-nemesis, Biebs, took a trip to Italy with his new lady friend, model Sahara Ray, where the two went skinny-dipping. So, whose meat is meatier? Seth Rogen knows. The actor appeared on Andy Cohen’s
“Watch What Happens Live” and gave his input. Rogen answered without hesitation. “I’ve seen Justin’s before, so maybe I was just like, you know, ‘I’ve been there, done that,’ a little bit. And it’s a wonderful one! But Orlando’s I was really happy with. Good for him! He’s in great shape overall,” he said. “So I thought, honestly, Orlando’s probably a bigger guy, and proportionally, his penis looked to scale, which makes me think overall it’s probably bigger.” We wonder what Miranda Kerr thinks of all of this.

For curly hair, it’s all about moisturizing your locks. “Don’t fight your curls,” says Balding. “Look at what you can do to make your texture work for the humidity instead of trying to get, say, the perfect beachy wave. If your hair is go-
ing to be really curly, it’s going to be really curly.” Balding recommends applying a deep moisturizing treatment twice a week, from midlength to the ends of your hair. “That’s going to put you on a good track, because once your hair is more moisturized, it’s less likely to get frizzy and go absolutely mental when you step outside,” she says. Balding also recommends using a light styling cream. She likes Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame. “It really cuts the frizz.”
Step-up your updo Face it, when the heat wave comes on, everyone just wants their hair off their neck. “Boxer braids are so on-trend at the moment, but if you can’t do that, just use your imagination to style it a bit differently,”

We’re living in a time of great disruption and change, which is either terrifying or motivating, depending on how you look at it. Here, a list of books old and new that will help you be the change you want to see.

In this self-help classic published in 1978, Gawain lays out a tutorial in creative visualization, the practice of visualizing what you want in life in order to create positive change. Modernday success stories like Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet swear by it.

Released in May, this nonfiction book puts the sweeping economic, political and digital changes we’re witnessing into historical context. Goldin and Kutarna, two Oxford academics, argue that despite the abundance of troubling headlines, we’re experiencing a new renaissance and we’re living in the greatest time in history to be alive as a result. On the days when you’ve received one depressing news alert too many, break this book out to gain a sense of perspective and renewed motivation to play the long game.
What better way to turn 2016 around than by following Rubin’s lead and devoting the year to the pursuit of happiness? The book mixes real-life trial and error, thought-provokingg commentary and
academic research to deliver a completely doable guide to contentment. Her podcast, “Happier,” advances the work established in her book, with episodes devoted to things like, “accept myself, expect more of myself” and “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
“How To Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind” by Pema Chodron This is less of a selfhelp manual and moree of a practical guide to the very useful skill of meditation. It’s an especially valuable ability to

“The Book Of You” by Nora Rosendahl, Nelli Lahteenmaki and Aleksi Hoffman If far-reaching theories are not your thing, try the small, actionable tips outlined in this book — things like writing down something you love about
yourself, being nice to a stranger or smiling when you don’t necessarily feel like it (“research shows that the mere act of smiling will actually make you feel happier”). It sounds cringeworthy on paper, but is a good reminder of the power of being kind to yourself and other people.

Popularity of Raisman soaring All eyes, literally, are on Aly Raisman and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
At this point, the Summer Olympics should just be renamed “women’s gymnastics, and a bunch of other sports.” That’s how popular the sport has become during the summer games in the United States as only Michael Phelps swimming events can compete, TV-ratingswise, with the girls of the mat, bars, beam and vault. Leading the way for this year’s women’s gymnastics team is, of course, Needham’s own Aly Raisman. One could argue that Raisman is already one of the most recognizable Olympic athletes of all-time — given that this is her second go-round in what is the mostwatched Olympic sport. The 22-year-old Raisman has grown up in front of America at the height of the popularity of social media, and it shows. You think Mary Lou Retton had nearly half a million
Twitter followers in her day? (Yeah, unfair … but for the record Retton has 24,000 followers today compared to Raisman’s 467,000.) For sure, some of the popularity of women’s gymnastics is due to the fact that many men are attracted to the athletes. An unreal 38.7 million viewers (especially in today’s online streaming culture) tuned in to watch the final night of gymnastics in London in 2012, and this past Sunday’s women’s gymnastics competitions provided a hint that we’re in for the same type of TV numbers. Meanwhile, male gymnast Olympic competitions are watched by millions less people and the men on the current team are far from household names. On Monday, a story ran in the Wall Street Journal, titled, “U.S. Male Gymnasts Want to Be Objectified,” with the subhead of, “Even when they medal, they stand in the shadow of female gymnasts. Might the answer be disrobing?” Brainstorming ways to make men’s gymnastics more marketable, U.S. gymnast Sam Mikulak suggested that they be
allowed to compete without their shirts on. “People make fun of us for wearing tights,” Mikulak told the Journal. “But if they saw how yoked we are maybe that would make a difference.” In 2015, Raisman posed mostly nude for ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. There were plenty of social media comments directed at her during the 2012 games taking aim at her “jacked” body tone and Raisman addressed that topic with ESPN. “I think imperfection is beauty,” she said. “Instead of being insecure about my muscles, I’ve learned to love them. I don’t even think of it as a flaw anymore because it’s made me into the athlete that I am. “As a gymnast you use every single part of your body. Everything from your wrist, your shoulders, your abs … I mean, even your pinky toe is important. Every part of your body has to be really, really strong.” All eyes will again be on the ever-popular Raisman and the U.S. women’s team Tuesday in Rio, with the women’s team all-around competition (7:30 p.m., NBC).
